PRACTICAL INFORMATION INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT:
CURRENCY:
HARSTAD/NARVIK AIRPORT EVENES (EVE).
The currency is Norwegian krone (NOK). Norway is a mainly cashless country and all major credit and debit cards are widely accepted. Exchanging foreign cash for local cash may be challenging but you will find ATM machines in many places. It’s a good idea to have some Norwegian money when you arrive in the country.
Located about 50 km from Narvik town centre and 45 min by car. DOMESTIC AIRPORT:
CLIMATE:
BARDUFOSS AIRPORT (BDU).
The Narvik region is located above the Arctic Circle but that doesn’t mean your bones will freeze 24/7. The warm waters of the Gulfstream provide the Ofot Fjord, including Narvik, with ice free ports during the winter, and summer temperatures of up to 30°C on good days. From the end of May until the end of July you can experience the midnight sun. This means that the sun never sets and we have daylight 24/7. During winter (October – March) the region has its dark season and in the middle of November the sun disappears until the end of January. Winter temperatures are usually somewhere between +5°C to –15°C, though some days can be much colder - especially when you travel further inland.

THE NATURAL PHENOMENA
NORTHERN AND ARCTIC LIGHTS
From mid-May until the end of July the sun never sets in Narvik. This phenomenon is commonly known as the midnight sun. There is no need to get up early to seize the day – you have daylight 24/7. Even in August and September the sun lingers above the horizon until around 9 p.m. Despite shorter days during the autumn time, there are plenty of bright colours on offer; the golden palette turns into magical greens as the sun sets.
THE MIDNIGHT SUN

The Narvik region is located in the centre of Hålogaland historic region, which, according to scientists, can be translated as The Land of The Northern Lights. We are right under the auroral circle and this spectacular phenomenon can be experienced from the beginning of September until the middle of April. Before it gets dark, the Arctic sky is dominated by purple and pink colours that gradually give way to an intensive blue twilight. And, when it is dark again the Aurora Borealis may start dancing above your head. The snow usually arrives in October and can stay until April.
I think it’s easy to capture the northern lights, but you need to be well prepared. My advice is to adjust your camera settings beforehand, wear a headlamp, take a tripod, something warm to drink and many layers of warm clothing. You never know when and for how long the lights will appear. But when they appear it’s going to be an experience you will not forget. Rune, photographer /

PORT OF NARVIK
WELCOME TO NARVIK - A PENINSULA SURROUNDED BY FJORDS AND MOUNTAINS. NARVIK IS SO MUCH MORE THAN JUST BEAUTIFUL NATURE! TROMSØ 230 km, 3 hrs from Narvik
It is the home of Ofoten railway, the Navvies, Polar Park, Alpine mountains and its unique war history – to mention some. It is also the official Norwegian candidate in the bid to host the 2027 World Championships in alpine skiing. Narvik, located just 45km from the Swedish border, was the first industrial town in Northern Norway as the construction of the Ofoten Railway was completed. A town centre was formed, and its unique culture was, and still is, influenced by Swedish navvies, British engineers and sailors from across the world.

SEA
RAIL
The Port of Narvik is central in the development of Narvik as a national and international transport and logistics centre. The harbour is ice-free all year round and well protected from wind and adverse weather. Narvik is the largest port in the Barents Region shipping more than 23 million tonnes through our facilities annually. In 2005, the Port of Narvik was given status as a “Motorways of the Sea” port by the EU. In Norway, only Oslo has this status in addition to Narvik. Narvik and Ofotbanen are also on the socalled TEN-T CORE Network, which is regarded as the main network for transport within the EU.
Narvik is the only city in Northern Norway (north of Bodø) with a railway connection. On-dock rail connects with the international network through Sweden linking us to southern Scandinavia and central Europe, as well as Asia and Russia. 10 iron-ore trains, 3 cargo trains and 2 passenger trains arrive and depart from Narvik daily.
ROAD Narvik is a junction for the national and regional road network, with the E6 running north to south and the E10 running east to west. With fish
Port of Narvik being a major product exported via Narvik, the road connection east (Lofoten/Vesterålen) and north (Troms) is now 20km shorter due to the new Hålogaland Bridge crossing the Ofot Fjord.
AIR Narvik’s regional airport is Harstad/ Narvik Evenes and it is only one of three wide body airports in Norway with the capacity to take down any size plane. There are approx. 15 daily arrivals/departures of passenger planes from Evenes as well as cargo and military traffic.
CRUISE
www.visitnarvik.com
CRUISE PORT NARVIK Northern Norway are approaching half a million disembarking passengers annually, an increase of nearly 70 per cent since 2010. While growth is naturally one of our goals, it is just as important to develop good shore excursions. Narvik as a cruise destination has also grown, and with the new developments, such as new cable car and charter train in combination with some unique USPs, Narvik Cruise Port is renewing itself. We are building a new pier in the city centre which will be completed by the end of 2019. The pier will be able to receive ships of up to 350 metres. TURNAROUND
Another goal is to attract more turnaround operations and it is our pleasure to introduce this new
turnaround concept for cruising in Arctic waters under the Midnight Sun or the Northern Lights. This is a truly unique opportunity to see this part of the world from a different perspective. Rural, rugged with wild nature and fauna. The colour spectre of the Arctic light reflected in the fjords, mountains and glaciers along this route gives this cruise an exceptional setting. The Port of Narvik is only 40 minutes from Harstad/Narvik Evenes regional airport, which is only one of two wide body airports in Northern Norway (the other being Banak in Finnmark). Narvik also has the infrastructure on the quayside to handle the busses and the people. In combination with excursions on offer we believe this offers a unique opportunity to explore our region.
OVERLAND
Narvik is only a three-hour drive from Lofoten, Vesterülen and Tromsø. Its location is ideal for cruise lines to offer overland tours between these destinations, meeting the ship at the next destination. Several of our excursion tours are located between these destinations, making it attractive for the guest to go exploring. TRANSIT
Narvik has a great selection of activities/excursions for all ages, both summer and winter. With a combination of volume tours and boutique excursions we welcome all cruise lines to Narvik.

As a farmer in the Arctic, you have to be good at adapting to the challenging conditions and the fast changing climate up north! We rely on grass for the cows and we only have 3 months to produce the grass before everything freezes again, so we really have to work hard in the summer season to prepare everything for the long north Norwegian winter. Even if it can be stressful, it is a wonderful and exciting life to be a farmer in the Arctic! Frank, farmer 12

The Gulf Stream makes it possible to live in Northern Norway. Without it, there would have been tundra. For hundreds of years we have combined fishing and agriculture. That combination made it possible to live so far North. We are used to the contrast between the dark time, with 4 hours of daylight, and the summer with 24 hours of sunlight, between white winter and green summer, between snow and ice in winter and lush nature in summer. Without these contrasts, life becomes boring! Martin, guide and teacher 13

Once a year, one town in Northern Norway bursts into life just as the sun once again conquers the dark arctic winter. For nine days, the whole of Narvik doesn’t sleep, and everyone is thrown into a joyful cultural festival filled with concerts, dance, theatre, art, exhibitions and street performance. Visiting Narvik during the festival is like timetravelling back to the end of the 19th century, when the world’s northernmost railway from Kiruna in Sweden to Narvik was built. Under the Northern Lights, the midnight sun and during winter storms – the Navvies relentlessly shaped a railway line through the Arctic mountains. Honouring these achievements, everyone, both young and old, dresses up in historic clothes. Women wear long dresses and men wear navvy hats and scarves.

The most comprehensive business in Ballangen was Bjørkaasen Gruber AS. The operation lasted from 1917 till 1964, and at the top about 450 people were employed there. The museum is in former administration building for Bjørkaasen Gruber. Visit the museum to learn the stories of the Bjørkaasen Gruber AS, mining activity in the region, and electric power production as well as other stories from Ballangen. ISOGAISA Isogaisa is a festival with focus on indigenous cultures and the spiritual. We have seminars, workshops, classes, lectures, exhibitions, and last but not least, music and entertainment. The event takes place in and around Fjellkysten in Lavangen, a quiet and idyllic fjord in South Troms. There are nice accommodations at the hotel, and plenty of space to set up a tent or camper. The celebration it self takes place in a gigantic octagonal lavvu with room for up to 400-500 people. All the events takes place under the roof, something that is much needed up here in the North.
MUSEUM NORTH IN NARVIK The museum is located within walking distance from the town square, overlooking the harbour and the town. The beautiful brick house, built in 1902 for the administration of the Ofoten district of the Norwegian Railway Company, is now a place where you can get to know the history of Narvik. The museum’s exhibitions
tell stories of the construction and the operation of the Ofoten line railway, the navvies who built the railway, the Swedish mining company LKAB and the iron ore transport from the ice-free port of Narvik. Learn about everyday life in Narvik through the exhibitions and see how Narvik has changed during its history.

LAUNCHING 2019

DISCOVER «THE EIGHTH WONDER OF THE WORLD» BY ARCTIC TRAIN HUNDRED YEARS AGO, THE OFOTEN RAILWAY WAS DESCRIBED AS “THE EIGHTH WONDER OF THE WORLD” BY THE AUTHOR ERNST DIDRING. HAVING EXPERIENCED THIS SPECTACULAR TRAIN JOURNEY BY ARCTIC TRAIN, YOU WILL UNDERSTAND WHY. Arctic Train AS, Stasjonsveien 1 (Narvik Train Station), 8514 Narvik (+47) 919 09 500 | post@arctictrain.com | www.arctictrain.com
The 42-kilometre train ride along Norway’s northernmost railway line, the legendary Ofoten Railway, takes you from Narvik by the fjord to the barren mountain plateau by the Swedish border. The stunning train ride takes you over seven bridges, through 23 tunnels and past five stations. Within an hour, the Arctic Train crosses the border, more than 500 metres above sea level, and arrives at Riksgränsen Station.
fjord. To make sure you get the most out of your trip, the train makes several stops along the way. Our priority is not to provide the fastest possible transport from A to Z, but to give you an unforgettable Arctic experience. While you are enjoying the view from one of the train’s 270 comfortable seats, you can pick tasty snacks and drinks from the menu.
ENJOY THE VIEW
MODERN STORYTELLING
Travelling through a historical, beautiful and wild landscape with mighty mountain peaks and cascading waterfalls, you will be blessed with a jaw-dropping view over the Arctic
It is not only the scenery surrounding the trainline that is dramatic. The historic events connected to the construction of the railway at the end of the 19th century and the war actions in
1940 create a dramatic backdrop for the Arctic Train experience. An automatic guide system ensures you get involved in the exciting history.
ACTIVITY PACKAGES Riksgränsen and Katterat are important activity hubs in our Arctic playground. During the Summer and Autumn months you can top up an already eventful train ride with a guided hiking tour along the Navvy Road, mountain biking or kayaking. From October to March you are welcome to join us for Northern Lights hunting and from February to May you can pick activities like dog sledding and snowmobile safaris from our Arctic adventure menu.
AURORA BOREALIS EXPERIENCE BY ARCTIC TRAIN Should your dream bear the name Aurora Borealis, we offer you an opportunity to improve your chances of meeting her. The areas around the Ofoten Railway is considered some of the best in the world for Northern Lights hunting. In other words, your chances for a date with Miss Aurora Borealis are quite good on board the Arctic Train.
However, you should be aware that she rarely keeps promises or appointments. She dances over the Arctic night sky when she finds it desirable, and she often disappears as quickly as she turned up. On board the train the guide selects the best stops along the way, in search of the northern lights. If the weather is cloudy in Narvik, there
are usually great opportunities for clearing close to the border, and vice versa. If the unpredictable Miss Aurora chooses not to show up at all, you will nevertheless experience an unforgettable train journey with lots of exiting photo objects under the Arctic sky.

EXPLORING THE MYSTICAL SALANGEN CAVES
On this tour you will meet running water with underground waterfalls, you have to crawl under low rock roofs and crawl past the underground river. The experience of being underground in total darkness creates a very special feeling. The caves are located approximately 5 km from Fjellkysten hotel. We will drive the guests here, and we’ll walk to the opening of the caves. By the main
cave opening we will light a big bonfire where the guests will be served a hot beverage and a sweet snack. There are quite a few caveopenings, but we usually go in the opening of what we call the maincave. The opening of the main-cave takes us inside the mountain where we’ll be met by running water. We then follow this underground river until we hit an underground waterfall before we return.

ALPINE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

ALPINE WORLD SKI CHAMPIONSHIPS WITH ASTONISHING ARCTIC NATURE AS A BACKDROP
Norwegians are born with skis on their feet. In Narvik, alpine skiing occupies a big place in local hearts and the town itself is known as a skier’s paradise. The skiing season runs from December to May in Narvikfjellet ski resort, a playground for families and adrenaline seekers. And Narvik’s gemstone is developing further. In November 2018, Narvik and North Norway were accepted as Norway’s candidate in a bid to host the Alpine World Ski Championships in 2027.
HERE IS WHY WE BELIEVE NORTH NORWAY, AND NARVIK, IS PERFECT PLACE TO HOST THE WORLD’S SECOND LARGEST WINTER SPORTS EVENT:
1.
IT IS GOING TO BE SPECTACULAR!
Narvik is situated between steep mountains and pristine, Arctic fjords. Mountains, fjords and the town make up a unique trinity that provides spectacular scenery for a world championship.
2.
FOCUS ON THE ARCTIC
Northern Norway is the centre of the Arctic. One of the aims of the Alpine World Ski Championships is to focus on the opportunities and challenges facing the Arctic Region.
3.
SKIING FACILITIES RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE TOWN.
4.
IT’S NOT ONLY NARVIK, IT’S ENTIRE NORTHERN NORWAY.
Narvik, in comparison to alpine resorts, is a relatively big town (population 18 000). In Narvik you are close to nature, yet have all the facilities of a city, including comfortable hotels, shopping centres and cosy restaurants.
The whole of Northern Norway supports and stands behind the plans for the Alpine World Ski Championships in Narvik. A unified region for common benefits.
38
ALPINE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
www.visitnarvik.com
5.
THE EFFECTS WILL BE IMMENSE.
Narvik will be the leading winter sports destination in the North Calotte region. An Alpine World Ski Championships will be a showcase for tourism, energy, environmental and marine industries.
6.
A TRIGGER FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE ALPINE SPORT
A World Ski Championships will contribute to bringing up a new generation of top alpinists. Perhaps it will contribute towards North Norwegian talent taking the podium in future events of alpine skiing?
7.
A ROLE MODEL FOR SUSTAINABLE EVENT MANAGEMENT
The Alpine World Ski Championships in Narvik will be the world’s most environmentally friendly winter sport event. It will establish a new standard that will be an inspiration for other organisers around the world.
39
8.
A FANTASTIC FESTIVITY
The event will be a fantastic fest for the people, with residents and visitors gathering at the compact Narvik central square daily.
9.
WORLD CHAMPION MEDIA COVERAGE
The media coverage will satisfy viewers who are used to traditional television broadcasts, in addition to be creative and up to speed on new media outlets. Available on all screens with spectacular scenes for film and photo.
10.
AN ECONOMICALLY STABLE PROJECT
An event of this sort is costly. Financial support from FIS is important. But the owners of Narvikfjellet has demonstrated great will to develop the resort regardless of this event. Also, the Norwegian state has a tradition of giving grants to major international championships. The Alpine World Ski Championships can be realised with a profit.

THE FISH RESTAURANT The Fish Restaurant is located by the main square in Narvik, beside the fish market. We offer fresh and healthy cuisine in cosy and laid-back settings. We serve traditional seafood, right from the fjords of Northern Norway. On the menu you will find traditional and authentic Norwegian fish-dishes served with potatoes and vegetables. Those who prefer more modern cuisine will be pleased to find fish and chips, and fish burgers on our menu. Everything we serve is fresh and the quality of the meals is superb. We serve a la carte lunches and dinners as well as the menu of the day.

BRASSERIET NAUSTET Brasseriet naustet is located at Fjellkysten hotel and is a restaurant where the flavours are characterized by scandinavian craftsmanship and a huge passion for food. Local products and nordic flavours are the core of the main menu. All the food we cook is also the food we love. We let nature decide the kind of food we make, inspired by the current season. When you sit in our restaurant you’ll see the beautiful view over the fjord, and when you walk out of our main entrance you see the forest and the mountains. We want this to be reflected in our food by serving the best of both worlds.
