Arctic experiences in The Narvik Region 2015/2016

Welcome to Narvik – the region of contrasts Welcome to the city between the steep mountains and the beautiful fjords. Narvik is the city of contrast and we are humbled over the fantastic nature and scenery we are surrounded by. We hope that you are ready to experience our great winter and northern lights excursions this winter.

The land of Northern Lights Hålogaland is the historic name of NorthernNorway and originates from the Old-Norse Hálogaland. The German celtologist, Kasper Zeuss, noted in 1837 that the word could be the Old-Norse logi, meaning «fire». Hálogaland became Land des Hálogi, in other words «The land of Northern Lights». Narvik is located in the center of Hålogaland – or The land of Northern Lights- and is the perfect gateway for experiencing this spectacular natural phenomenon!

Why is the Narvik region perfect for Aurora Hunting • The region of Narvik, with a population of 19 000 inhabitants, is located between the Norwegian coast and the mountains which boarder to Sweden and the Swedish Lapland. This makes it the perfect place to hunt the Northern Lights

• The region can offer a varied landscape with many great locations to experience the Northern Lights. • The weather changes quickly in the north of Norway, and because of our great location between the coast and the Swedish Lapland we have very good opportunities to find clear skies in search of the Northern Lights. • It is also easy to travel to Narvik by both air, train and car. • The Narvik region is surrounded by fantastic and easy accessible nature. The region has good facilities for accommodation, a diversity of restaurants, and we have a local and authentic history.

When taking photos of the Northern Lights, please consider the following advice from our great local photographer Pål Jakobsen: • Use a tripod to get sharp images with long exposures. • Use camera type with manual setting (SLR). • Use a fast, wide-angle lens (14mm – 24mm) to capture the whole scene. • The faster the wide-angle lens is (low

f-number f1.4 – f2.8) the better, as this allows for faster shutter speeds and more light reaching the sensor. • Set the aperture on the lens to the lenses widest aperture as a start – you can adjust this later and if you want more depth of field to get the fore-ground sharp, you need to increase both the f-number and the ISO. • Depending on the brightness of the aurora, set the ISO to 200 – 1600 • Set the shutter speed to 10-15 seconds as a start. • Take the image and verify the result, then adjust the ISO, the shutter speed or both if necessary. - If the image is dark, you may need to raise the ISO. - If the image is dark and the aurora is moving you may need to both raise the ISO (2000 – 3000) and set a faster shutter speed (2-3 second). - If the image is too bright and the aurora is calm, set a faster shutter speed.

Northern lights hunting with experienced Northern lights photographer The Narvik-region offers one of the best locations to see the Northern Lights with the magnificent mountains diving into the beautiful fjords surrounding the city of Narvik. The city of Narvik is protected between the mountains and enjoying thus a somewhat drier climate than further out on the coast, resulting in more clear weather for the Aurora to dance over the skies. If the weather is not optimal along the coast, the Swedish boarder with its inland climate is only an hour drive from Narvik where we will go chasing the light. Our professional photo-guide will share his knowledge about camera settings, lenses, aperture, shutter ISO and focus, and will of course help you with your photography. Moose Safari Salangen municipality lies between the inland and the coast in the northern part of Norway. This means that we, from December through to April, can experience moose from close range, as these large and majestic animals migrate (individually, as families or in larger flocks) towards their winter-feeding areas on the coast. We observe the moose from a warm vehicle however; at some locations, it may well be possible to leave the vehicle to observe the moose, with nothing between you and the animal. We will of course have your safety in mind and conduct these sessions with focus on avoiding disturbing the moose as this would be unfortunate for the animal. We`ll serve warm drinks and cookies.
