Things to Do Things to Do
WHERE CITY MEETS COUNTRY
Lackawanna County is a phenomenal destination for entertainment and outdoor adventures. Whether you’re looking to see world-famous acts in concert, brilliant theater, or watch tomorrow’s New York Yankees earn their trip to the Bronx, you’ll find great tickets here. These big-city attractions are as unique as your interests and couple perfectly with our country charm. Lackawanna County provides four seasons of opportunities to make nature your playground. We really are the best of both worlds!
A STRONG FOUNDATION
History books will tell you that steel, iron, coal, railroads, and textile production laid the foundation for Scranton to become a prominent American city before and during WWII. The real catalyst that has been driving the communities that would become Lackawanna County from the mid-1800s through today is its people.
MELTING POT
Immigrants poured into Scranton from Ireland, seeking jobs and opportunities for their families. Italians, Eastern Europeans, and Jewish immigrants came soon after. Working in extremely difficult and unsafe conditions, these early residents of Lackawanna County fought for rights and protections that American workers still enjoy today. While unions, workplace safety, child labor laws, and more were being born out of the coal mines, the immigrants who settled here were also building diverse communities that embraced hard work and the principles of America but kept their traditions and cultural heritage.
WORK HARD, PLAY HARD
There’s a significant difference between remembering and respecting your heritage and being stuck in the past. In Lackawanna County, you can experience our rich history in a variety of unique and exciting ways, but you’ll also want to spend some time enjoying the modern attractions and events that make our area the perfect destination for family fun. Visitors of all ages will be overjoyed at the abundance of activities you can choose from when you combine educational adventures with exhilarating entertainment as you plan your unforgettable getaway to Lackawanna County.

You will feel
the weight of history as you tour this national museum and will be amazed at the ingenuity of the engines and the turntable. Steamtown offers short train rides on select weekends. Check their schedule for longer seasonal excursions, like their fall foliage rides. Kids will love more than just the train ride. SPRING WINE FESTIVAL AT MONTAGE MOUNTAIN
FUN FOR ALL
We celebrate our diverse cultures through parades and food festivals, honor our heritage with unique and exciting events, and support our growing arts scene through a plethora of annual celebrations held throughout Lackawanna County. Family is at the center of our celebrations, both as the catalyst for the occasion and the makeup of the revelers. Each of these events provides an opportunity for everyone to share in the fun. Attend one of our Festivals, and you’ll make it an annual family trip before you even get home.
FOUR SEASONS OF PARTIES
The calendar has twelve months, and in Lackawanna County, we fill each page of our calendar with as many parties as possible. We have festivals celebrating wine, beer, flowers, holidays, music, ice, theater, trains, tattoos, our river, and so much more. Many of these celebrations are unique to Lackawanna County, and some have received national attention. Winter, spring, summer, and fall, Lackawanna County has a festival to celebrate them all!
BON APPETIT
Lackawanna County is a melting pot, and we’ve used that pot along with some pans and trays to cook up food festivals that serve delectable, authentic ethnic cuisine. Shakespeare taught us that a rose by any other name would smell just as sweet. Well, in Lackawanna County, we’ve also learned that while you might not be familiar with the dishes on the menu at our food festivals, the deliciousness doesn’t get lost in the translation.
DIVERSE CELEBRATIONS
Lackawanna County’s population is made up of immigrants and the descendants of immigrants from around the world. This not only creates vibrant, diverse communities, but it also affords us many opportunities to celebrate the cultures and traditions of everyone. While these celebrations may seem disconnected and can trace their origins from opposite sides of the globe, there is something they all share; pride. Our people are proud of where they came from and eager to share their history and heritage with their neighbors and visitors alike. Learning about and celebrating each other promotes acceptance and understanding, and that is something worth celebrating.

The parade boasts over 12,000 participants, including Irish groups and societies, bagpipers, high school and string bands, elaborate floats, Irish dancers, and much more! VIVA SANT’ UBALDO
Lackawanna County’s most unique festival only happens in two places in the world: the sister cities of Jessup, Pennsylvania, and Gubbio, Italy. Brought to Jessup in 1909, St. Ubaldo Day was a way for immigrants from Gubbio to feel connected to the home they left behind. For over 100 years, this celebration has brought thousands of spectators to Lackawanna County to join in the fun. This wonderful tradition, which takes place on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend, is an exciting combination of color, culture, pride, and faith.

Held at Montage Mountain Resorts, your ticket gets you full access to its waterpark and all the rides you can handle inside the fairgrounds. CHEERS!
Whether you say cheers, salud, prost, cin cin, or Sláinte, you’ll find the perfect place to have a cocktail in Lackawanna County.
HOME ALONE
Since the movie’s debut in 1990, millions of viewers have laughed till they cried watching a young Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin) protect his house from a pair of bungling burglars as his mother tries to get home to her son. Her desperate efforts bring her to a fictionalized version of the real Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton International Airport.
THE OFFICE
The hilarious NBC mockumentary that is set in Scranton made reference to locations within the city (see page 62) and made famous what locals and visitors have always known: There really “ain’t no party like a Scranton party, ‘cause a Scranton party don’t stop!”
Scranton, Lackawanna County’s largest city, has a rich history, including being a cornerstone in the building of our country. As interesting as Scranton’s contributions to the Industrial Revolution are, the Electric City is now best known nationally for being the home of Dunder Mifflin from NBC’s hit show, The Office. While the iconic television show is the most notable, Scranton has long been a favorite reference in pop culture. So much so that people are sometimes surprised to learn that the City is an authentic and wonderful place. While the fictional representations are fun and frankly a valuable tool for marketing our community, Scranton, Lackawanna County, and our people have had a far more significant impact outside pop culture.
THAT CHAMPIONSHIP SEASON
The Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning 1972 play, as well as the 1982 film, are set in Scranton. Scenes for the movie were filmed in Scranton, and Scranton resident Jason Miller wrote both the play and the film adaptation, along with directing the movie. The film’s score featured the West Scranton High School band.
ADAM RIPPON
30,000 POUNDS OF BANANAS
The 1974 Harry Chapin song depicts a fictional version of a real 1965 truck accident that resulted in the flipping of a 35-foot semi-trailer filled with bananas. Its load of bananas spilled onto Moosic Street in Scranton.
Candy maker and entrepreneur who started the Gertrude Hawk Chocolates Company out of her home in Scranton.

Lackawanna County native who won an Olympic bronze medal in ice skating and Season 26 of Dancing with the Stars ROBERT WOOD JOHNSON American industrialist from Lackawanna County and co-founder of Johnson & Johnson.LAST WEEK TONIGHT WITH JOHN OLIVER
HBO’s comedic current events show and its host, John Oliver, had some fun highlighting Scranton and our local WNEP 16 News viewers’ infatuation with the weather department’s backyard train set. A friendly back and forth between the show and our community ensued, resulting in the show building and gifting to Scranton “an almost irresponsibly large train set” filled with Scranton’s landmarks. The incredible and very real train set is now on display at the Electric City Trolley Museum for all to enjoy.
THE MENZINGERS

DAVE PORTNOY
