Festivities

We celebrate our diverse cultures through lively parades and food festivals, honor our heritage with unique and exciting events, and support our ever growing arts scene through a plethora of annual celebrations held throughout Lackawanna County. Family is at the center of our celebrations, both as the catalyst for the occasion and the makeup of the revelers. Each of these events provides an opportunity for everyone to share in the fun. Attend one of our festivals, and you’ll make it an annual family trip before you even get home.

MONTAGE MOUNTAINFEST / PRESTON & STEVE’S CARDBOARD CL ASSIC

FOUR SEASONS OF PARTIES There are twelve months in a year, and in Lackawanna County we fill each page of our calendar with as many parties as possible. We have festivals celebrating wine, beer, flowers, holidays, theater, music, ice, trains, tattoos, our river, and so much more. Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall, Lackawanna County has a festival to celebrate them all.

SAVOR THE FLAVORS Lackawanna County is an ethnic melting pot, and we’ve used that pot along with some pans and trays to cook up food festivals that serve delectable, authentic cuisine. Shakespeare taught us that a rose by any other name would smell just as sweet. Well, in Lackawanna County, we’ve also learned that while you might not be familiar with the dishes on the menu at our food festivals, the deliciousness doesn’t get lost in the translation.

DIVERSE CELEBRATIONS Lackawanna County’s population is made up of immigrants and the descendants of immigrants from around the world. There is something they all share; pride. Our people are proud of where they came from and eager to share their history and heritage with their neighbors and visitors alike. Learning about and appreciating each other promotes acceptance and understanding, and that is something worth celebrating.

The Scranton St. Patrick’s Parade is the largest annual celebration in Lackawanna County. Since 1962, the St. Patrick’s Parade Day Association of Lackawanna County has conducted this nationally acclaimed parade the weekend before the Feast of St. Patrick (St. Patrick’s Day). “Parade Day,” as it’s known locally, is one of the largest St. Patrick’s parades in the country, regularly attracting 150,000 spectators. The parade boasts over 12,000 participants, including Irish groups and societies, bagpipers, elaborate floats, and much more!

Lackawanna County’s most unique festival only happens in two places in the world: the sister cities of Jessup, Pennsylvania, and Gubbio, Italy. Brought to Jessup in 1909, St. Ubaldo Day was a way for immigrants from Gubbio, who largely settled in Jessup, to feel connected to the home they left behind. This wonderful tradition, which takes place on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend, is an exciting combination of color, culture, pride, and faith that the whole family will enjoy.

37

The Lackawanna County Heritage Fair combines our rich history, blend of cultures, and delicious ethnic cuisine with carnival amusements, live entertainment, and waterslides. Held at Montage Mountain Resorts, your ticket gets you full access to its waterpark and all the rides you can handle. Different from an agricultural fair, the Lackawanna County version centers its focus on the area’s heritage and uses interactive displays, local artisans, and educational demonstrations to accomplish their mission. On-site parking is free for the Lackawanna County Heritage Fair.

One of Lackawanna County’s most delicious traditions is La Festa Italiana. Held annually on Labor Day Weekend, the four-day celebration of culture, cuisine, and music brings together people of all ethnic backgrounds from near and far. “La Festa,” as the locals call it, attracts over 100,000 people annually to Courthouse Square in Downtown Scranton to enjoy the food, live music, and shopping from local vendors. Make sure you try the cannoli!

39

Montage Mountain Resorts has partnered with 93.3 WMMR’s Preston & Steve Show to create Lackawanna County’s most unique winter festival. Get ready for two amazing days on the mountain, featuring performances by OAR, Collective Soul, and The 502s, Cardboard Classic races, fireworks, and so much more. Build your own cardboard box sled and test your mettle by riding it down the slopes while two of Philadelphia’s favorite radio personalities broadcast all the hysterical action. This March festival celebrates winter and marks the coming of spring. You’ve never seen anything like it!

The Santa Parade has been putting smiles on thousands of children’s faces and injecting Christmas spirit into Lackawanna County for 30 years. Catch a glimpse of all your favorite Christmas characters as they kick off the holiday season in style each November. Featuring marching bands, twirlers, dancers, floats, giant inflatables, and Jolly Old Saint Nick, Charles Dickens himself would love it!

When massive ice sculptures line State Street and live performers are on every corner, you know it’s time for the Clarks Summit Festival of Ice. Admission and parking are free to this frigid event, which features live bands, games, horse-drawn carriage rides, and a phenomenal parade. The Clarks Summit Festival of Ice brings an atmosphere of winter wonderment to Lackawanna County that you won’t want to miss.

Push your limits in the annual Scranton Half Marathon, a 13.1-mile foot race that energizes Scranton each spring as thousands of participants take to the city’s streets and trails. Opt for the Scranton 5k the day before, or take on The Doherty Double by doing both the 5k and Half for a true test of stamina!

A local favorite, the Steamtown Marathon occurs annually in October. The marathon runs through 14 Lackawanna County communities, including 4.2 miles of paved trails along the Lackawanna River. The Steamtown Marathon is a nationally recognized, USATF-certified event that Runner’s World has ranked as the 6th best overall marathon.

LOCAL ROUND UP

The Office TV show famously declared there “Ain’t no party like a Scranton party!” That’s very true, but Lackawanna County as a whole hosts unique events year-round that are guaranteed fun for the whole family.

A DELICIOUS HISTORY Old-world favorites are our bread and butter. Lackawanna County is profoundly influenced by our rich past. When immigrants from around the world settled in Lackawanna County, they brought their cultures, traditions, and, possibly best of all, their bounty of unique recipes. Sensational homemade pasta, authentic handmade tamales, delectable pierogies, and traditional souvlaki are just some of the mouthwateringly delicious dishes that will make you think you have traveled internationally.

A FRESH PERSPECTIVE Locally sourced sustainable organic ingredients, gluten-free, vegan, plant-based, smoke-infused, and fusion dishes are readily available, as well as a great wedge salad and a steak that looks like it belongs on the Flintstones. Whether you’re looking for modern and trendy or classic comfort food, you will find a way to tempt your taste buds in Lackawanna County.

QUENCH YOUR THIRST Life has gotten busier, and opportunities to relax with your significant other, friends, and family over an adult beverage are few and far between. You deserve some time to let loose and enjoy delicious cocktails outside on a beautiful sunny day, watch a game at a craft brewery with a pint of cold beer, sip homemade wine while the sun gently sets on a gorgeous vista, dance the night away to the music of a live band in an even livelier bar, or all of the above. After all, it’s important to make the time to stop and smell the rosé.

The Electric City Scranton got its electrifying nickname because it became the very first city in the U.S. to successfully operate an electric-powered streetcar system starting in 1886.

Scranton, Lackawanna's largest city, has a rich history, including being a cornerstone in the building of our country. As amazing as Scranton’s contributions to the Industrial Revolution are, the Electric City is now best known nationally for being the home of Dunder Mifflin and NBC’s hit show, The Office. While the iconic television show is the most notable, Scranton has long been a favorite reference in pop culture. So much so that people are sometimes surprised to learn that the city is an authentic and wonderful place. While fictional representations are fun and a “...our town is valuable tool for marketing dope and pretty, so our community, Scranton, Lackawanna County, and check out how we live our people have had a far in the Electric City!” more significant impact MICHAEL SCOTT & outside of pop culture. DWIGHT SCHRUTE

NBC’s hilarious mockumentary TV series and cultural phenomenon, set in the fictional Dunder Mifflin Scranton branch, highlighted real-life Scranton locations and made famous what locals and visitors have always known: "Ain't no party like a Scranton party, 'cause a Scranton party don't stop!" Check out The Office Self-Guided Tour on page 62!

Dave Portnoy Ted Lasso

Home Alone

In season 3, episode 2 of the Apple TV+ series, after Higgins says a striker's wife binge-watched The Office, Coach Ted Lasso mistakenly references the American version, mentioning Scranton.

Barstool Sports’ Founder, Portnoy, has famously reviewed pizzas at over 1,000 U.S. locations. He visited Lackawanna County twice, reviewing nine spots – three which were in Scranton. "One bite; everybody knows the rules!"

Her desperate efforts bring her to a fictionalized depiction of the real Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport.

That Championship Season The Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning 1972 play, adapted into a 1982 film, is set in Scranton. City resident Jason Miller wrote both the play and film adaptation and directed the movie. Scenes from the movie were filmed at Scranton locations, including Nay Aug Park and the Erie-Lackawanna Railroad Station (now the Radisson Lackawanna Station Hotel Scranton). The film's score featured the West Scranton High School band.

King Pin As the 1996 comedy begins, we learn that the movie's main character, bowler Roy Munson, lives in Scranton.

Last Week Tonight With John Oliver In 2017, John Oliver's HBO comedic current events show had some fun highlighting Scranton and our local WNEP 16 News viewers' infatuation with the weather department's backyard train set. After a friendly back-and-forth between the show and our community, the show built and gifted Scranton with an “almost irresponsibly large train set" that showcases the city’s landmarks, now on display at the Electric City Trolley Station & Museum.

Lackawanna County was the last of Pennsylvania’s counties to be created and the only PA county created after the American Civil War. Our historic county and its residents have made enormous contributions to America's past and present.

• Lackawanna County was founded on August 13, 1878. • “Lackawanna" is derived from a Lenape term that translates to “stream that forks,” and this is the name given to the county after the Lackawanna River. • Lackawanna County has two National Park Service affiliations: Steamtown National Historic Site in Scranton and Destination Freedom: The Underground Railroad Walking Tour in Waverly Township. • The first blast furnace was built in Old Forge. • The Borough of Jermyn was once named Baconville.

If for any reason, your pet should need medical attention while you’re here, we have veterinary partners that are available to help 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
