The Electric City Scranton earned its electrifying nickname for being the first U.S. city to successfully operate an electricpowered streetcar system, which began in 1886.
Scranton, Lackawanna County's largest city, boasts a rich history and has been a cornerstone in building our nation. While Scranton's contributions to the Industrial Revolution are remarkable, the Electric City is now best known globally as the home of Dunder Mifflin, featured in NBC's hit show The Office. Though this iconic TV show is the most famous association, Scranton has long been a popular reference in pop culture. So much so that people are often surprised to learn the city is an authentic and wonderful place. While these representations are fun and serve as a tool for marketing our community, Scranton, Lackawanna County, and its people have had a far more significant impact outside of pop culture.
“...our town is dope and pretty, so check out how we live in the Electric City!”
MICHAEL SCOTT & DWIGHT SCHRUTE Scranton is the sixth largest city in Pennsylvania
Home Alone
Ted Lasso
A beloved movie classic since its 1990 debut, Home Alone has had millions of viewers laugh till they cried watching young Kevin McCallister protect his house from a pair of bungling burglars while his mother frantically tries to return home from Paris. Her desperate efforts bring her to a fictionalized depiction of the real Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport.
That Championship Season
NBC’s hilarious mockumentary TV series and cultural phenomenon, set in the fictional Dunder Mifflin Scranton branch, highlighted real-life Scranton locations and made famous what locals and visitors have always known: "Ain't no party like a Scranton party, 'cause a Scranton party don't stop!" Check out The Office Self-Guided Tour on page 60!
In season 3, episode 2 of the Apple TV+ series, after Higgins says a striker's wife binge-watched The Office, Coach Ted Lasso mistakenly references the American version, mentioning Scranton.
The Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning 1972 play, adapted into a 1982 film, is set in Scranton. City resident Jason Miller wrote both the play and film adaptation and directed the movie. Scenes from the movie were filmed at Scranton locations, including Nay Aug Park and the Erie-Lackawanna Railroad Station (now the Radisson Lackawanna Station Hotel Scranton). The film's score even featured the West Scranton High School band.

Portnoy, has famously reviewed pizzas at over 1,000 U.S. locations. He visited Lackawanna County twice, reviewing nine spots–three of which were in Scranton. "One bite; everybody knows the rules!"
Last Week Tonight With John Oliver
In 2017, John Oliver's HBO comedic current events show had some fun highlighting Scranton and our local WNEP 16 News viewers' infatuation with the weather department's backyard train set. After a friendly back-andforth between the show and our community, the show built and gifted Scranton with an “almost irresponsibly large train set" that showcases the city’s landmarks.

Urban Legends
Carbondalien
On November 9, 1974, residents of Carbondale, PA, reported seeing a mysterious, glowing object fall from the sky and land in a local silt pond, which is now located behind Russell Park. This unexplainable event led to an investigation by local authorities and UFO enthusiasts, widespread media coverage, and locals who wanted answers. To this day, the City of Carbondale still embraces the unexplained phenomenon that happened that day. The Carbondalien Festival brings together UFO enthusiasts, locals, and visitors for a day of fun, mystery, and community.
The Center of the Universe
Uncover the mysterious and the unexplained in Lackawanna County, PA. Nestled in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains, our region is rich with urban legends, cryptic encounters, and UFO sightings that have puzzled residents and visitors alike for generations.
According to local theorist John Peruka, Olyphant, PA, is much more than a quiet town in Lackawanna County. The town is said to have mystic connections to ancient civilizations and cosmic portals. The proof is in numerology, astronomy, geological coordinates, and frequent UFO sightings. Peruka’s mystical
Mountain Mysteries
“Don’t whistle in the woods!” The Appalachian Mountains, which run through Lackawanna County, are shrouded in mysteries and urban legends. Meet the creatures that are said to lurk through our ancient mountains:
Bigfoot (Sasquatch)
The countless reports of Bigfoot sightings in Lackawanna County often describe a large creature covered in dark hair, standing between six to nine feet tall, and walking upright.
Mimics
If you hear a strange “Hey!” or your name being called in the woods… no you didn’t. Mimics in Appalachian folklore are often depicted as entities that can replicate the sounds and voices of humans and animals. These creatures are believed to inhabit the dense forests, using their mimicking abilities to lure unsuspecting travelers or prey deeper into the wilderness.
Shapeshifters
These malevolent beings are capable of changing their physical form at will. One of the most well-known shapeshifters in these stories is the "skinwalker," a person with the ability to transform into an animal, often for nefarious purposes.
Squonk
The Pennsylvanian Squonk is said to be a small, wrinkled creature with an exceptionally sorrowful nature that lives in the Northeastern Appalachians.
