GETTING HERE & AROUND TRAVELLING

TO PENTICTON

Penticton is located in the south central interior of British Columbia and is the urban hub of the South Okanagan Valley. It is conveniently located along the Highway 97 corridor, which is the main connection for the South Okanagan to the rest of the Okanagan Valley and other major BC highways. Penticton is also serviced by two airports, locally by Penticton Regional Airport (YYF) and further by Kelowna International Airport (YLW).

BY CAR

For generations, Penticton has been one of the top road trip destinations of choice in BC. Being centrally located along Highway 97 makes Penticton a fantastic base when exploring the Okanagan Valley. With convenient access to other major routes, Highway 1 (Trans-Canada Highway) and Highway 3 (Crowsnest Highway), Penticton is an ideal stop for longer road trips. BY AIR

Arriving by air, Penticton Regional Airport (YYF) is conveniently located at the south end of Penticton and only a 10 minute drive from downtown. Direct flights from Vancouver are serviced by Air Canada and Pacific Coastal Airways. Direct flights from Calgary and Edmonton are serviced by Westjet. Car rentals are conveniently available on-site with Budget Car Rental. Several carriers also fly into Kelowna International Airport (YLW), which is approximately a 1.5 hour drive north of Penticton and offers air service between other major national and international destinations.

GETTING AROUND

Penticton’s natural landscape and accessible walking and biking paths make the city very easy to explore by foot, pedal or paddle. Once you arrive and check-in at your accommodation, you can leave your vehicle’s keys behind and enjoy a ‘Fuel Free…Almost’ vacation. Exploring Penticton without your vehicle allows you the freedom to slow down, see more and discover the local gems, typically enjoyed by locals all year long!

TAXI, RIDE-SHARE & SHUTTLES

Sometimes we still need to use a vehicle to get around Penticton. Getting from the airport to your hotel, going on a wine tour, attending an event or exploring some trails further outside of the city is easy with the range of taxi and shuttle services available, as well as a newly available ride-sharing program. Taxi and shuttle services can accommodate almost any special request.

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION

Penticton’s Transit System has a modern fleet of low-floor transit buses, which are wheelchair and scooter accessible. Serving Penticton’s residential neighbourhoods and commercial areas, the Okanagan Similkameen Transit System provides regular service between Naramata and Penticton, as well as service down to Osoyoos and up to Kelowna.

VISITOR CENTRE LOCATIONS

Our main Visitor Centre is located at 888 Westminster Avenue West and our satellite location on the beach, the Peach Visitor Centre, is located at 185 Lakeshore Drive. The main Penticton Visitor Centre is open year round and the Peach Visitor Centre is open seasonally. You can also find us around town in the summer, with our booth setup at the Saturday Market and other events.

VISIT PENTICTON YEAR ROUND

SPRING

The South Okanagan benefits from pleasant weather in the spring with the early return of longer days and sunnier weather. Vineyards and orchards start blossoming and it’s a great time to be outdoors enjoying fresh air and exploring. Temperatures range from 8°C to highs of 22°C with the warmer temperatures in the later months of May and June. Rain is rare with an average of just 2-4 days of precipitation per month.

SUMMER

Reaching temperatures of 35°C+ with the odd rain shower and low humidity has made Penticton a very popular summer destination. Summertime in Penticton is our busiest time of year with visitors taking advantage of our warm weather, clear skies and cool, fresh water lakes. If you’re looking for a break from the sun’s rays, there are several spots serving delicious ice cream treats or you can grab a seat on one of the many shaded patios. Remember your sunscreen and sunglasses!

FALL

Extend your summer and visit Penticton in the early autumn months. The days begin to get shorter but we still benefit from daytime highs of 24°C in September, cooling to between 5°C and 15°C in later months. It’s a perfect time for being outdoors, walking, hiking, biking and exploring. Fall is also harvest season and you’ll be greeted with lush vineyards and orchards where you can breathe in the scent of fresh fruit and sagebrush as you explore the area.

WINTER

Penticton is a year-round destination and the milder winter months bring in snowbirds looking to get away from colder Canadian climates. The days are shorter but temperatures can still reach highs of up to 5°C with an average low of just -4°C from December to February. You may need to bundle up but there’s no shortage of outdoor adventures including skiing, skating, snowshoeing, and fat-biking, with snow falling an average of 40 days through the winter.

Situated between two large fresh water lakes, ample green space, local wildlife, an abundance of wineries, vineyards and orchards, and never ending trails to explore, it is no wonder travellers choose to visit Penticton. BY FOOT

The natural landscape surrounding the City of Penticton has fostered a cozy community feel with all the amenities of a larger metropolis. With less than 7 km between the north and south end of the city, you’ll find yourself just steps away from world-class culinary and cultural experiences as well as endless outdoor activities. Walk around the downtown core of Penticton, take a stroll along the boardwalk of Skaha Lake or Okanagan Lake, or hike up Munson Mountain above the iconic PENTICTON sign.

BY PEDAL

Penticton is surrounded by a wide range of world-class road cycling routes, casual trails and challenging singletrack mountain bike trails. The 45 km road loop around Skaha Lake and the historic Kettle Valley Rail Trail both offer incredible vistas and panoramic lake views. For the more adventurous riders, Three Blind Mice and Campbell Mountain offer some of the best singletrack mountain biking terrain in BC. If you don’t have your own bike or are unable to bring it on your travels, then stop into one of our local bike shops or bike rental locations to pick up a bicycle or e-bike and start exploring.

BY PADDLE

Penticton is one of only two cities in the world situated between two lakes. The fresh waters of Okanagan and Skaha Lakes offer a variety of fuel free activities both in and on the water whether it’s exploring the coves by kayak, canoe or paddle board, catching air on a kiteboard, cooling off with a swim or relaxing on a floatie and floating down the channel.

KVR EXPLORING

The Kettle Valley Rail (KVR) Trail is one of the most iconic attractions in Penticton. Stretching 660 km across BC from Hope to Castlegar, the KVR is a decommissioned railway which has been converted into a recreational trail network, and is part of the Trans Canada Trail. The section of the trail between Penticton and Naramata is arguably the most scenic of the entire KVR.

Easily accessible from Downtown Penticton, the KVR Trail works its way out of the city to the northeast, through some residential neighbourhoods before opening up and following along the eastern ridge line of the Naramata Bench. From there you are surrounded by vineyards and orchards for the rest of the way as you head towards the village of Naramata or the iconic Little Tunnel lookout (17 km from Downtown Penticton, approximately 2.5 hour return trip on a bike), with just a 2.2% grade heading north, and plenty of wineries and lookout stops along the way.

The KVR Trail is a family friendly trail that’s very well maintained and ideal for riders and walkers of any ability. The portion from Little Tunnel to Ruth Station in Kelowna is open to motorized traffic, so use caution on this section.

On the northwest side of the city, on the opposite side of Okanagan Lake from the Naramata Bench, the KVR Trail continues. The best access point for this section of the KVR Trail is by driving to the Trout Creek area of Summerland and parking at Fenwick Road, where you can make your way onto the trail heading north towards the Prairie Valley KVR Station and continuing on towards Princeton. This section of the KVR starting at Faulder is open to motorized vehicles, so we recommend gravel or mountain bike specific tires and to use caution when riding.

South of Penticton is the south spur section of the KVR that takes you from Penticton to Okanagan Falls along Skaha Lake. Starting at Wright’s Beach Camp, the trail continues for 20 km following the shoreline of Skaha Lake, through the village of Kaleden then across the Trestle Bridge into Okanagan Falls (approximately a 3 hour return trip by bike).

Enjoy the KVR Trail all year long whether walking, cycling, hiking, horseback riding or fat-biking. The panoramic views of the valley, lake and mountains are beautiful every season.

PENTICTON CHANNEL

LENGTH: 7 KM LAKE-TO-LAKE

ONE WAY

DIFFICULTY: EASY, PACKED GRAVEL

Walk from the Penticton Rose Garden on Riverside Drive over the bridge and follow the path next to the Penticton Channel from Okanagan Lake all the way down to Skaha Lake. Note: this path is not shaded and can be very hot during the summer months.

MCCULLOCH TRESTLE ALONG

THE KETTLE VALLEY RAIL TRAIL

LENGTH: 5 KM ROUND TRIP

DIFFICULTY: EASY TO MODERATE, PAVED PATH AND PACKED GRAVEL

Access the KVR Trail via Vancouver Place. Walk, run, bike or horseback ride along this historic trail enjoying spectacular vistas of Okanagan Lake, past working vineyards to reach the McCulloch Trestle.

HIKING

PENTICTON CREEK WALK

LENGTH: 4.5 KM ONE WAY

DIFFICULTY: EASY, PAVED PATH AND SIDEWALK

Walk from Ikeda Gardens at the Penticton Art Gallery, next to Okanagan Lake, along the creek, up to the Penticton Water Treatment Plant, next to the Penticton reservoir. Great for joggers, dog walkers, strollers/children and all ages.

CARMI/ELLIS CREEK, CANYON VIEW TRAIL

LENGTH: 2 KM LOOP

DIFFICULTY: EASY, UNPAVED

Start at the Garnet Fire Interpretive Site parking lot, just off Beaverdell Road from Carmi Road, and just before the cattle guard. Enjoy scenic viewpoints overlooking Penticton and the Ellis Creek canyon. Hikers should avoid the steep downhill mountain biking trails that crisscross the established hiking trails.

SOUTH SPUR KVR TRAIL, PENTICTON TO OKANAGAN FALLS

LENGTH: 14 KM ONE WAY

DIFFICULTY: EASY, GROOMED GRAVEL / DOUBLE TRACK / PAVED ROADWAY

Northern trailhead is at the south end of Wright’s Beach Camp. This section of the KVR Trail is quite flat, well maintained, offering scenic views of Skaha Lake; passing through campgrounds and the community of Kaleden before crossing a restored railway trestle bridge into Okanagan Falls.

CYCLING ROAD BIKING

Penticton is a road biking mecca! From challenging climbs and rolling hills through the vineyards and orchards, to technical descents and long scenic routes, know you are in for a memorable ride.

From early April to October, our favourable weather allows you to get on the road early and keeps you going well into the fall months, for a longer than usual cycling season. This is one of the main reasons cyclists are drawn to the region year after year. The local cycling community is well established and supportive to all riders and can offer everything you need for an exhilarating and challenging ride.

Ideally situated in the heart of the South Okanagan Valley, surrounded by lakes, rolling vineyards and mountains, it’s little wonder that Penticton has become home to some world-class cycling and triathlon events including the Okanagan Granfondo, Peach Classic Triathlon, and IRONMAN Canada.

Whether you’re looking to do some intense training or leisurely touring, Penticton offers something for every level of rider and memories to last a lifetime. Here are just a couple local recommendations.

NARAMATA BENCH – 30 KM

This out and back ride takes you from Downtown Penticton, through lush vineyards and orchards along Naramata Bench Road into the quaint village of Naramata. The vistas over Okanagan Lake along the way are spectacular.

TOTAL ASCENT – 310 M (1,071 FT)

MAX. ELEVATION – 471 M (1,545 FT)

OKANAGAN FALLS – 45 KM

Starting from Downtown Penticton, you travel through the heart of the city, then along Eastside Road, which hugs the east shoreline of Skaha Lake and connect to MacLean Creek Road. Once you reach Okanagan Falls, you’ll circle past a number of boutique wineries before heading back along the east shoreline of Skaha Lake, following Eastside Road.

TOTAL ASCENT – 222 M (728 FT)

MAX. ELEVATION – 462 M (1,516 FT)

WHITE LAKE LOOP – 70 KM

Initially, you follow the same direction as the Okanagan Falls ride, but you continue to ride south through the village of Okanagan Falls and then head west, along Green Lake Road towards Willowbrook. This is a great ride to take in the diverse landscapes of the region, as you skirt White Lake Grasslands Protected Area and return along the west side of Skaha Lake, following Highway 97.

TOTAL ASCENT – 468 M (1,535 FT)

MAX. ELEVATION – 608 M (1,995 FT)

PACA 100 – 103 KM

A challenging loop from Penticton to Oliver. You’ll be able to take in views of the lakes, wineries and wildlife, while pushing yourself through some technical climb sections along the way.

TOTAL ASCENT – 747 M (2,451 FT)

MAX. ELEVATION – 607 M (1,991 FT)

IRONMAN CANADA – 175 KM

Here is the opportunity to challenge yourself against the best athletes in the world, right here in Penticton’s backyard. This circle route will take you from Penticton down to Osoyoos, through the villages of Cawston and Keremeos, then back to Penticton. The route has some fast flat sections, some long steep climbs and a few long rollers. Along the way you will experience the best of what the South Okanagan has to offer.

MOUNTAIN BIKING

Locals and visitors in the know have been riding the ridges, benches and rocks around Penticton since the ‘70s. All-mountain and downhill riders can explore advanced and intermediate terrain, while fun, gentle green trails are perfect for anyone in your group to have fun.

The local networks of Campbell Mountain, Three Blind Mice and Skaha Bluffs Provincial Park offer a wide variety of trails that challenge your technical skills while also letting you enjoy flowy laps, all conveniently located within 10-15 minutes from Downtown Penticton. Thanks to the ongoing hard work of the volunteer led Penticton and Area Cycling Association (PACA), our trails receive regular maintenance, upgrades and informational signage. PACA also hosts a number of events celebrating the cycling community, including the Annual Penticton Bike Festival. While in the area, pass on some ‘Trail Karma’ and donate to the trail maintenance efforts.

CHOOSE YOUR TRAIL

THREE BLIND MICE

The largest network of mountain biking trails in Penticton, offering diverse terrain for all rider levels. Here you will find cross-country trails and downhill runs that flow through the forest and offer incredible views of the orchards and vineyards that border Okanagan Lake.

PRIMARY TRAIL TYPE: CROSS-COUNTRY & DOWNHILL

CAMPBELL MOUNTAIN

The go-to area for the new mountain biker, with a great network of short and long trails with by-passable features. Located just 10 minutes from Downtown Penticton, nearly all the trails in this network are suitable for beginners and intermediates.

SKAHA BLUFFS

This Provincial Park offers a variety of recreation opportunities including hiking, rock climbing and wildlife viewing. ROCK CLIMBING

REACH NEW HEIGHTS.

Skaha Bluffs Provincial Park is one of the top climbing destinations in Canada. With the South Okanagan’s seasonally dry and warm weather between March and October, Penticton offers the longest climbing season anywhere in the country.

What makes Skaha Bluffs a world-class rock climbing destination is the easy access to over 1,200 established climbing routes. Just 10 minutes south of downtown Penticton are the gates to Skaka Bluffs Provincial Park with large parking lots that are just a short walk to the climbing routes. Skaha Bluffs has something for everyone, from novice to advanced climbers. Most visitors come to climb routes in the easier grades, but the area also provides a variety of moderate and advanced climbs for others to enjoy.

If you are looking to learn how to rock climb for the first time or advance your skills, we have great local guides and tour companies, such as Skaha Rock Adventures and Hoodoo Adventures that can show you the ropes!

In downtown Penticton, Hoodoo Adventures is also home to South Okanagan’s only indoor climbing gym. It’s open all year, so you can practice your skills no matter the season.

GOLF

THE FAIRWAYS ARE CALLING.

Penticton is one of the few places in Canada where you can golf almost year round!

Our golf season starts in early spring and with plenty of annual sunshine, dry weather and incredible views throughout the valley, making Penticton the perfect hub for a South Okanagan golf getaway. The region boasts a variety of courses including championship 18-hole courses, executive 9-hole courses and driving ranges all within a 1 hour drive from Penticton. Following the diverse landscape of Penticton and the South Okanagan region as whole, golfers have been flocking to Penticton to test their skills at the different styles of courses.

Penticton is home to the Penticton Golf & Country Club, in the heart of the city, which was the first 18-hole golf course in the BC Interior. This course provides a challenge from the back tees but is still fun for intermediate and casual golfers, with short game practice facilities available. The clubhouse offers guests a full-service pro shop and a licensed restaurant with a large patio overlooking the course.

Heading south is Fairview Mountain Golf Course in Oliver, designed by Les Furber. This course is enjoyable and playable by all golfers, and also offers a complete practice facility, with a driving range, short game area, expansive putting green and bunker practice. Fairview Mountain Lounge provides a licenced restaurant and two outdoor patios with incredible views.

Further south is Osoyoos Golf Club. With two 18-hole layouts, golfers have the option to experience the cart-mandatory unique desert links course or a walkable parkland style course surrounded by the orchards and vineyards of Osoyoos. The clubhouse offers guests a full-service pro shop and 3 dining areas with deck and patio space overlooking the course. In addition, the Golf Academy hosts a full length driving range, practice putting green, plus an 80 yard short game area featuring 2 putting greens, greenside bunker and various lie options.

DISC GOLF

First played in 1926, disc or frisbee golf is a new spin on a classic game. Penticton is home to two unique layouts to try. Marina View 9 Hole Course is minutes from Okanagan Beach and is a great way to take a break from the beach and try something new. For the more experienced player, head out to the Three Blind Mice 18 Hole Course located on Naramata Bench, for a fun and challenging course in the open pine forest above the vineyards and orchards of Penticton.

Exploring the unique shorelines, finding secluded swimming spots or visiting neighbouring communities on the water is a great way to get the true Okanagan experience. Home to full-service marinas, public boat launches, yacht clubs and rental companies that operate on both lakes, we have everything you need to get you out for a day on the lake. If you are looking to bounce on the waves with a jet ski, play in the wake with skis, board or tube, or you just want to drop anchor and jump in, Penticton has you covered.

For those looking for a more self-propelled adventure on the water, Penticton is the ideal destination for stand-up paddle boarding, kayaking and canoeing. If you don’t have your own watercraft, no worries, we have a number of companies servicing both lakes that offer rentals and lessons to help you get out there. The best way to get familiar with the area is to book a tour with one of our local guides. Explore and experience nature, the serenity of the lake, and the scenery the South Okanagan Valley is famous for.

THE ICONIC CHANNEL FLOAT

The 7 km lake-to-lake channel float is the must do summer experience in Penticton and great fun for the whole family. The float starts at Coyote Cruises’ steps on Riverside Drive and slowly drifts from Okanagan Lake, past the golf course and continues all the way down to Skaha Lake. If you don’t want to float the whole way or need to pick up some supplies, there is a mid-way stopping point at Green Mountain Road.

Coyote Cruises offers tube and luxury island rentals for floating down the channel. They offer single and double tubes (with drink cup holders) and 4, 8 or 12 person party islands. All tube and island rentals include shuttle transport back to the starting point on Riverside Drive and offer ways to keep all your valuables safe and dry. We encourage you to rent your floaties from Coyote Cruises in an ongoing effort to reduce the environmental impact of discarded, flat, or damaged tubes.

On top of the picturesque views, warm sunshine and cool waters, you’re sure to make new friends as you float along!

Use caution when floating the channel as water levels and wind can change

Use sunscreen and stay hydrated – it can take 3-4 hours to float the entire length of the channel

Ensure small children and non-swimmers wear a lifejacket or floatation device

Keep valuables (keys, wallet, phone, etc.) in a waterproof bag or container

Stay clear of bridge pilings and do not go past the final bridge into Skaha Lake

Do not tie floatation devices together and it is not recommended to float alone

Please make sure you properly discard your flat or damaged floaties. Do not leave litter lying around or in the channel

Beaches and water fun are part of the culture here, so throw down a towel and jump in! Along the shoreline of Penticton, you’ll find long stretches of golden sandy beaches and all the amenities you need to enjoy a day at the lake.

OKANAGAN BEACH

Okanagan Beach along Lakeshore Drive is the hot spot. Easy walking distance from downtown, hotels, motels, world-class restaurants and craft breweries, this area is a natural draw for visitors. Between the iconic SS Sicamous paddle wheeler to the west and the iconic giant peach to the east lays over 1 km of premium sandy beach.

SKAHA LAKE PARK

Skaha Lake Park is one of Canada’s top beaches as noted by a number of travel magazines. It’s a red sand beach surrounded by lush green parkland, perfect for cooling off or enjoying a delicious picnic lunch. The area offers an ideal mix of recreation and relaxation with numerous volleyball courts, a baseball field, playgrounds, children’s splash pad, concession stands and scenic walkways all steps from the water’s edge.

SUDBURY BEACH

Sudbury Beach on Skaha Lake is a huge sandy beach perfect for sun bathing, beach volleyball and swimming. It’s a popular area for wind surfers and kite boarders and can be especially busy on windy days.

THREE MILE BEACH

Three Mile Beach is a popular swimming area between Naramata and Penticton and has two distinct areas to enjoy. The south facing area is great for swimming with your dog and is also a popular day-moorage stop for boaters. The north facing area features fine sand with gorgeous views of the lake and large sandy bluffs and also has a well-known clothing optional section further down the beach to the right of the main stairway.

TIP! STAY COOL

The weather can get surprisingly hot in Penticton with temperatures in the summer often reaching 35-38°C (95-102°F). Make sure you use a good quality, high-factor sunscreen, especially when travelling with kids and remember to re-apply sunscreen after swimming. The hottest time of day is around 2pm to 4pm, so perhaps take a break from sunbathing and seek shady areas. Drink plenty of water throughout the day and stay hydrated.

PENTICTON IS NOT JUST A SUMMER DESTINATION!

When the snow starts falling, Penticton turns into a winter wonderland creating the perfect opportunity to explore the city and surrounding area in ways you might not have tried before. From snowshoeing, winter hikes and fat-biking on the snow covered trails, to lacing up your skates at a local rink, or enjoying the comforts of the valley with a cozy fireside meal paired with your favourite beverage.

Nickel Plate Nordic Centre is 1,850 metres above sea level and offers one of the longest Nordic ski seasons in Canada. Just 15 minutes past Apex Mountain Resort (45 minutes from Downtown Penticton) Nickel Plate offers 56 km of groomed classic and skate skiing trails and there is even a dedicated 1.6 km dog-friendly trail for your four-legged friends to join in the fun! The higher elevation rewards skiers with an unparalleled experience of fresh air, blue skies and endless mountain vistas, all winding through snow-covered pines. Nickel Plate offers a wide range of lessons and rentals for those new to the sport or those looking to take their skiing to the next level.

SNOWSHOEING

At the higher elevations, the snow gets deeper, creating perfect conditions to explore with a pair of snowshoes. Breaking trail through a fresh layer of snow and taking in incredible vista views of the region is the best way to spend a glorious winter day. Nickel Plate Nordic Centre has an extensive network of over 22 km of dedicated and marked snowshoe trails, perfect for every experience level. A full rental fleet is available for visitors to use on their trails or for exploring neighbouring Nickel Plate Lake Provincial Park. Closer to Downtown Penticton, the Carmi Recreational Trail Network features a great forest setting which is good for all skill levels and a great option for those with their own equipment. Those without their own snowshoes can rent them locally from Hoodoo Adventures. Be advised this area is a rustic and unmaintained network of trails. Plan ahead as conditions can change very quickly in the mountains.

WINTER TRAILS

Penticton’s temperate climate keeps our iconic trail networks accessible year round. The Kettle Valley Rail Trail, Campbell Mountain and the Three Blind Mice trails continue to be well used in the winter by hikers and fat-bike riders. Keep in mind the trails are not groomed, so be prepared with the right equipment and keep an eye out for icy spots.

ICE SKATING

Lace them up and take the family for a skate. Apex Mountain is home to the famous 1 km adventure skating loop through the trees, in addition to the full-size outdoor NHL rink at the base of the ski resort. Chute Lake Lodge, a rustic alpine retreat just 30 minutes past Naramata, has a large outdoor rink next to the lodge that is perfect for overnight guests and daytrippers. There are a few options to get on the ice right here in Penticton as well. Each winter, the Penticton Lakeside Resort converts their private beach area on Okanagan Lake into a fully refrigerated ice surface that is open to both guests and the public by reservation. There’s also a new outdoor public skating rink, located in the heart of downtown, between Gyro Park and City Hall. With a fully refrigerated ice surface and heated washrooms, this is a must do activity in Penticton during the winter. From the Interior Salish word snpintktn, the name Penticton has been commonly translated as “a place to stay forever,” but more accurately means “a place where people have always been all year long.” For over 7,000 years, our region has been home to the Syilx First Peoples, who were instrumental in helping the first European fur traders travel through the Okanagan in the early 1800s. You can learn more about local Indigenous cultures and the history of the syilx, through a variety of community events, including the Pow Wow Between the Lakes or by visiting the En’owkin Centre.

HISTORIC PENTICTON

Bring Penticton’s history to life through the fascinating exhibits and interactive learning spaces at the Penticton Museum & Archives. It’s a great place to start a self-guided walking tour of the historical buildings and landmarks of the downtown core.

A must see iconic landmark is the PENTICTON sign adorning Munson Mountain, constructed in 1937 it remains a source of civic pride, as well as being a great spot to take incredible panoramic pictures of the city and Okanagan Lake. Just below, running along the Naramata Bench, you will find the famed Kettle Valley Rail (KVR) Trail, a decommisioned railroad system built in 1910-1916. Another great photo op and local museum is the SS Sicamous, which was once a luxury stern wheeler used to transport passengers and cargo to remote communities along the shores of Okanagan Lake. As the largest surviving stern wheeler in BC, the SS Sicamous is a unique part of Okanagan history and heritage.

Cherries are the first to arrive, followed by apricots, plums, peaches, pears and apples. Heirloom tomatoes of every hue and shape, fragrant strawberries as well as raspberries and blueberries make appearances at markets and road-side stands throughout the season.

U-PICK & FRUIT STANDS

Take a drive and stop at one of the many u-pick or fruit stands located throughout the Penticton area and South Okanagan, for fresh produce direct from local farmers. Find fruit and vegetables, locally raised meat and eggs, artisanal cheese, preserves, honey, savoury treats, handmade artisan goods and much more.

MARKETS

If you prefer to shop for your local produce all in one place, then you don’t want to miss our local weekly markets. The Penticton Farmers’ Market is held on Saturday mornings

from 8:30 am to 1 pm from April to October, on the 100 block of Main Street. Vendors proudly make, bake or grow everything they bring to the market. Find farm fresh fruits and veggies, eggs, honey, baked goods, preserves and handmade crafts plus a selection of local liquor vendors each week for tasting and purchasing.

Also running on Saturdays at 8:30 am to 1:30 pm from May to September is the Downtown Community Market. Located along Main Street, Front Street and Backstreet Boulevard, this open-air market boasts a diverse set of hundreds of vendors who feature handmade goods including clothing, food, jewelry, collectibles, antiques and furniture, as well as food vendors, live music and entertainment.

You can also find weekly markets in nearby communities including the Summerland Farmers’ Market on Tuesdays, Naramata Community Market on Wednesdays, and the Summerland Rotary Market on Sundays.

The region comes alive with blossoms in the orchards, wildlife awakens from their winter slumber, and fresh produce starts popping up at the local farmers’ markets. The arts scene comes to life with the Ignite the Arts Festival. Then the Meadowlark Nature Festival is host to events that connect visitors to nature and learn about the diverse habitats and species in our region. The Okanagan Fest Of Ale is one of the longest running annual beer festivals at over 25 years and is traditionally one of the first BC beer events of the year. The busiest time of year in Penticton with events and festivals happening almost every weekend. Major family friendly cultural events such as the annual Penticton Peach Fest, Elvis Festival, Peach City Beach Cruise, Pow Wow Between the Lakes, Ribfest, Penticton Scottish Festival and the 97 South Song Sessions Festival highlight the calendar this time of year. The Okanagan Fall Wine Festival and Penticton Beer Week celebrate our local producers and highlight the unique flavours of the region. The endurance community continues to enjoy our iconic terrain with the annual Dragonboat Festival, Kettle Mettle Gravel Fondo and the BCBR Mega Volt. Other fall highlights include the Pentastic Jazz Festival, Penticton Curling Classic, and the Vancouver Canucks Young Stars Classic hockey tournament.

Beyond wine and beer, Penticton and the surrounding region is renowned for our exquisite fruit crops due to the perfect growing conditions in the Okanagan Valley. As a result, the region is home to a growing number of cideries and craft distilleries.

CIDERIES

Over the past few years, the South Okanagan region has seen a significant and successful expansion into the cider industry. The Okanagan Valley as a whole, is recognized as a distinct region on the international cider stage. Many fruits are being used to make cider including pears, cherries, berries and of course, apples. Just like the wine, beer and spirits makers, our cider makers are constantly experimenting with various cider-making methods and fruit mixtures to showcase the bounty of the Okanagan fruit harvest.

CRAFT DISTILLERIES

From handcrafted liqueurs to “one of a kind” vodka, gin and whisky, the craft distilling scene is growing. To be recognized as a craft distillery in BC you must not produce more than 50,000 litres of spirits a year, must use 100% BC agricultural products to produce the alcohol, and fermentation must be completed on site. This ensures that the distillers in BC are creative and innovative in their search for raw materials and flavours.

CRAFT BEER CAPITAL OF CANADA

Penticton has been a leader of the Okanagan craft beer scene for more than 25 years with a strong collaborative community of eight craft breweries along the Penticton Ale Trail, also known as the Penticton Beer Blocks, and home to the annual Okanagan Fest of Ale. In 2020, Lonely Planet recognized that legacy when it named Penticton Canada’s “craft beer capital.”

Early founders, Tin Whistle Brewing, Barley Mill Brew Pub and Cannery Brewing ignited the craft beer scene more than 20 years ago. Highway 97 Brewing brought innovation and more energy to the community. In the last 4 years, Slackwater Brewing and Neighbourhood Brewing have opened, bringing a fresh energy to the downtown core of Penticton. Abandoned Rail Brewing and Yellow Dog Brewing are the newest additions to the Penticton Ale Trail, with Abandoned Rail being uniquely located right on the Kettle Valley Rail Trail, and Yellow Dog coming from Port Moody.

Whether you are stopping in for a quick pint, grabbing a flight to try new seasonal beers or filling a growler, the Penticton breweries also offer some of the best food options in the city. Try Penbrewtours for a guided pedal bike tour of the breweries, or grab a 4-pack and some bites from one of our breweries and head down to one of the designated beaches or parks where responsible alcohol consumption is allowed year-round.

Join us in October for the annual Penticton Beer Week, for special events at each brewery and local establishments to celebrate our vibrant craft beer scene. To mark the occasion each year, all eight of Penticton’s craft breweries come together to make a special collaboration beer and a portion of the proceeds from the sales are donated to a local non-profit or charity.

THE OKANAGAN YOU REMEMBER.

Penticton is the hub of the South Okanagan, and within a short 15-20 minute drive in any direction, you can easily reach one of the nearby communities to spend an afternoon exploring.

NARAMATA

On the east side of Okanagan Lake, head north out of Penticton along Naramata Road, a beautiful winding route through the Naramata Bench vineyards and orchards, and in 20 minutes you’ll reach the quaint village of Naramata. Here you’ll find ample outdoor activities, art galleries, locally-owned shops to peruse and even a renowned wellness retreat. Bring your bike and check out Little Tunnel along the KVR Trail, or wander into the trees and discover the beautiful Naramata Creek Park Falls. Naramata truly has something for everyone.

SUMMERLAND

Take a 15 minute drive north on Highway 97 on the west side of Okanagan Lake and you’ll reach Summerland. Enjoy the simple pleasures here, whether it’s a morning hike to the top of Giant’s Head Mountain, taking a trip on the Kettle Valley Steam Railway, a bite into a crisp apple or juicy peach that was grown in a local orchard, or maybe just sitting at a café in the sun and people-watching. The list goes on, but you should discover these joys for yourself with a stop into Summerland.

PEACHLAND

Continuing further north along Highway 97, 15 minutes past Summerland, you’ll reach Peachland. A quaint lakeside community with a colourful waterfront promenade perfect for strolling. Away from the water’s edge is the famous Pincushion Mountain hiking trail, which gives you an incredible vista view of Okanagan Lake from Kelowna to Penticton.

KALEDEN

Just 10 minutes south of Penticton, and a gorgeous drive overlooking Skaha Lake along Highway 97, is the small village of Kaleden. Take a tour of the immaculate Linden Gardens, visit the historical Kaleden Hotel Park, or spend some time at Pioneer Park, all of which are great photo opportunities and quiet spots you won’t want to miss.

OKANAGAN FALLS

Continuing further south on Highway 97 past Kaleden you’ll reach Okanagan Falls, located at the very south end of Skaha Lake. The community is named after the little falls that used to be situated at the end of the lake. From beaches to bluffs, whether you are cycling along the old KVR which runs along the west edge of the lake, hiking the Peach Cliff trails or fishing at Vaseux Lake, the temperate desert climate allows visitors to spend the day enjoying many recreation facilities available. Okanagan Falls is also home to the original location of the famous Tickleberry’s Ice Cream.

OLIVER

40 minutes south of Penticton, continuing on Highway 97 past Okanagan Falls, is the town of Oliver, Canada’s Wine Capital, and home of the District Wine Village, the first village of its kind in Canada. The desert-like landscape is home to endangered species such as native grasslands and features lakes, mountains and diverse species including wild horses. All of this creates awe-inspiring settings for hiking, bird watching, or sipping a glass of wine while enjoying the view.

Penticton has over 50 accommodation choices from major hotels, to bed and breakfasts, campgrounds and vacation rentals. Whether you are here for wine tasting, exploring the local trails, or attending a local festival or event, you’ll find a comfortable place to get a good night’s sleep.
