BUSINESS EXPO: APRIL 19TH
APRIL 2024
BY ERIC SANDE, EXECUTIVE DIRECTORHere it is, the start of the second quarter already, and we are gearing up for the 25th Annual Central Oregon Business Expo and Job Fair on Friday, April 19. We are thrilled to welcome back U.S. Bank as our Title Sponsor and this year we also welcome Central Oregon Daily as our Presenting Sponsor. It is truly an honor to have such amazing support of this exciting event, so be sure to mark your calendars. U.S. Bank has a strong commitment to building relationships, which is what the Expo and Job Fair is all about and Central Oregon Daily is all about bringing Central Oregon the latest on what is happening.
The Expo and Job Fair will kick off with a luncheon from 11:45am to 1pm, (cost is $55) featuring Redmond’s own Justin Coats, with NEESH.AI. We are hearing a lot about AI and how it is shaping the world around us, this isn’t happening in the future, this is happening now. Justin Coats is an expert of the rapidly expanding world of AI and you need to know how it’s changing our world in real time. AI is as important to understand, and as revolutionary as the creation of email, you can’t afford to be left behind so be sure to attend this luncheon.
Immediately following the luncheon, from 1pm to 5:30pm, the Expo exhibits will open and you will be able to meet with various businesses featuring their products and services as well as many have employment opportunities available. There will be FREE workshops including a Q and A with Justin Coats, Social Media, and the State of Oregon Office of Small Business Assistance. Workshops are free to attend, last about one hour and are a great way to learn something new.
I look forward to seeing you at the US Bank Central Oregon Business Expo and Job Fair, Friday, April 19. Be sure to go online at visitredmondoregon.com/Chamber-of-Commerce/ or call Amanda Joe for more information.
Have you ever wondered what the CVB at the end of the Redmond Chamber of Commerce’s name stands for? Well, it stands for Convention and Visitors Bureau. As a Convention and Visitor’s Bureau (CVB), we continuously work to develop and nurture convention, meeting and group business as well as leisure travel to our community. Chambers of Commerce by their nature are the trusted resource for visitors and community members alike. As a CVB we work with numerous groups that are looking to come to Redmond. We offer a wide range of hospitality services, including locating lodging, conference space, providing collateral material, host information tables, identify sponsors, find transportation, coordinate local activities, offer coupons and much more. This year we are working with a number of groups including two returning groups the BMW Motorcycle Owners of America (BMW MOA) and Family Motor Coach Association (FMCA). Groups continue to choose Redmond, not only for the incredible Expo Center, but also for the many other amenities, natural attractions, great customer service and overall friendliness of the region. On a daily basis, we assist many smaller events, including conferences, weddings, family reunions and other events that visitors or residents might be planning. It is exciting to make these events a success and showcase the best of what Redmond has to offer.
The Redmond Chamber continues to add new members to our membership every month and we hope you have the opportunity to reach out and welcome them. Each month you will find a list of the new members in our newsletter and periodically in our weekly updates. I encourage you to send a welcome note and business card from your business to all our new members. This is a great way to meet new friends and make new clients.
Happy Spring!

Q: My natural skincare products are distributed in Central Oregon retail and specialty stores. I also have a small following on social media and through Etsy.
What are some low-cost ways I can further market my business?
A: Every year brings new trends. Here’s a summary of our favorite marketing tips:
1) Your best customers are the ones you already have! Marketing to this group doesn’t have to be expensive; it’s all about making customers feel special. Thank them, treat them to gift bundles and early access to promotions and loyalty programs. If possible, provide free shipping or small gifts and discounts for advance purchases and referrals.
2) Distinguish your brand using customized mailing lists and your Etsy page to offer valuable information and “insider” specials. Consider holding an open house or demonstration at the stores that carry your products. Offer in-store instant discounts, free samples or gift-wrapping services.
3) Review your website through a customer lens. Do you have a compelling tagline and call to action? Reformat your site or media posts to ask and answer your customers’ needs such as:
How can I protect my skin in a dry climate? Or how can I prevent wrinkles?
4) Offer an unconditional money-back guarantee. A colleague of ours offered this for 22 years, building immediate trust and confidence in his offerings. He only refunded money three times in 22 years!
5) Consider giving back to organizations that make sense for your brand, in your case preventing animal testing or promoting vegan products. Providing a portion of proceeds from a sale can help build your brand and your community.
This month’s experts are Sue Meyer and Maureen Quinn of Central Oregon Community College’s Small Business Development Center. There are many clubs and organizations embedded in the Crooked River Ranch community and one of the longest standing traditional groups is the Lions Club. This club consistently has ongoing projects that contribute to the Ranch community and beyond. You'll be interested to learn about the basics of this wonderful club and maybe encouraged to seek out your local Lions Club and join in the loyalty and dedication in serving your community.
There are two strong words that is the Mission Statement "WE SERVE". The Lions Club reaches local, national, and international communities. Ranch resident Phyllis Carlin is running for a director's position on the Lions International Board. Many local members have held local and state positions. Currently there are 71 members in the Crooked River Ranch Lions Club with the goal of increasing those numbers through recruiting others. In the past they've relied on current members introducing the club and activities to neighbors on the Ranch. However, the club is now utilizing social media as that has shown to reach more community residents. The club does have what's called Leo's program for younger members under the age of 18. You have to be 18 to join the official Lions Club.
Ongoing projects specifically for the Ranch are working and maintaining the Crooked River Ranch Limb Dump, CRR Lions Club Golf Tournament, the Lions BBQ, delivering and setting up medical equipment, roadside trash pick up 3 times a year, maintaining the Lion's Memorial Park, bottle and can recycle and hot dog sales. CRR Lions Club vision testing is a program they are so excited to be a part of. This program ser-vices Moro County, the gorge area, Christmas Valley, Jordan Valley, Sisters and Camp Sherman and most communities in between. So far this year CRR Lions Club has tested over 15,000 students.
CRR Lions Club offers a 'Scholarship' program for residents who reside on the Ranch. This is not just for the youth, adults can qualify also. The scholarships of up to $2000 are awarded to both graduating seniors of the current class and residents who are continuing their education beyond high school. The scholarship itself is partially financed with the sale of firewood from the Limb Dump and a grant from benefactors Denni and Lucky Mattson who made the original contribution to create this fund. In addition, the club receives cash donations from various sources that the club invests in to ensure the funds keep solvent for the future. The total amount for the various scholarships is about $10,000 each year based on many considerations.
CRR Lions Club short term goal is to build membership and long term is to continue all their current projects as this is a benefit to the Crooked River Ranch community. If this is of interest to you, you are encouraged to contact your local community Lions Club. What a great way for the younger generation to grow into a life of service!
Economic development is a team sport. Redmond Economic Development, Inc. prides itself on working with local businesses, government, and colleges. This month, we are excited to get to know John J. Graham, Jr. through an informal Q&A session. John is the new Executive Director of the Center for Business, Industry, and Professional Development at Central Oregon Community College.
Tell us a little about yourself and what you hope to bring to COCC.
My background includes more than 35 years of senior leadership experience at global brands like Nike, Quicksilver and Speedo. I’ve also been a small business owner, financial technology investor and registered investment advisor. Like so many, my family and I fell in love with Central Oregon and moved here in 2020. I was looking for an opportunity to actively contribute to growing our economy when I learned of the position at the college.
I’m looking forward to bringing my expertise and energy to COCC to expand CBIPD as the center of excellence for boosting career skills and supporting local businesses focused on growth in Central Oregon.
What is the purpose of COCC’s Center for Business, Industry and Professional Development?
Our purpose is to offer relevant, short-term programs to help individuals, businesses and organizations achieve their professional goals. We strive to be the one-stop shop for workforce development in Central Oregon.
What is the most exciting thing happening in your industry?
The continued alignment of community partners, local business sponsors, government agencies and individuals engaged cooperatively to drive a more vibrant and sustainable workforce in Central Oregon.
How can local businesses take advantage of what COCC is offering?
A real advantage of COCC’s CBIPD is that we can help any size business. We provide tools, education and expert advice wherever you are in your business lifecycle journey.
A first great resource is to connect with us online at cocc.edu/CBIPD. On our website you can review our current courses along with all of the events, workshops and trainings we offer.
Next, I recommend scheduling a free one-on-one advising session with our Small Business Development Center (SBDC). These sessions are available in English or Spanish, on zoom or in person. Find out more about advising and other small business resources at cocc.edu/sbdc.
What industry would you like to see come to Redmond?
This is a great question! I’ve based my answer on employment projections through 2032: Construction/Manufacturing. These areas align with the Clean Energy Works 2024 initiative to enhance workforce training and technical assistance for clean energy and manufacturing sectors through the expansion of the IAC (Industrial Assessment Center) program. Funds allocated by the Inflation Reduction Act are now starting to reach Oregon – let’s take advantage of this opportunity.
Information sector industries including Telecommunications, Software Publishing, Motion Pictures and Sound Recording.
How does supporting REDI matter to you as a Community Stakeholder?
Supporting REDI matters because it directly contributes to a stronger, more connected community, where every individual has the chance to succeed and contribute to our collective prosperity.
Are there other things you’d like to share with us? (Hobbies, favorite hangout spot in Central Oregon?)
I enjoy running along the Deschutes River Trail, angling on the Crooked River, hiking Misery Ridge Trail, spring skiing at Mt. Bachelor and tasting any new IPA flavor that can be created.

Greetings To All Of Our Amazing Members!
Are you new to the Redmond Chamber of Commerce, or maybe you have been a member for a while and are wondering if there’s anything you’re missing from your Chamber membership? As the Membership Director, I am greatly honored to be given the opportunity to highlight our top ten tips for making the most of your Chamber membership and getting plugged into the business community. From events, to staying in touch, to getting involved with projects and initiatives across the city…here we go!
Build your business network, be inspired and learn something new at our events.
Coming to events is a big benefit of membership, but that doesn’t mean you have to come to everything…we know how busy you are. I recommend starting by booking 1 to 2 events a month for you or your team, and you’ll soon see your network grow and your business relationships develop. Check out our Upcoming Events page on our Chamber website at www. visitredmondoregon.com/chamber-ofcommerce/events/ to see what’s coming up so you can better plan for the type of events that you would like to participate in and capitalize on. Or, if you’d like a recommendation from the team, just get in touch and we’ll point you in the right direction and help you make that decision.
Ask the team for introductions. We’re here to help you meet the right people. Whether you’re looking for collaborations, warm leads, new business friends or suppliers, or are just a little shy with initially approaching new people, reach out and let us know who you’d like to meet and we can make that introduction happen through either email or at one of our
many events. We are here to foster and help grow your business relationships so don’t forget to use us as a resource for doing just that.
Let’s chat about your business!
Book a call or set up an appointment with our membership team (aka…me), and we’ll see what help and ideas we can share. The more we know about you and your business, the more we can help, so let’s talk. You can reach me at (541) 923-5191 or at membership@ visitredmondoregon.com to set up a time to discuss your business, how we can help promote you, or to discuss membership opportunities in general.
Boost your online business profile. Use your business profile on our Member Directory to share information about who you are and what you do, plus show off your business by adding images, video and links to your website and social networking channels. It’s also great for SEO, with active Chamber profiles having a much higher ranking on search engines. Go to www. visitredmondoregon.com/chamber-ofcommerce/member-login/#myaccount to access our Member Login page and update your profile or contact me at the Chamber for more information and ways you can raise your business page on our platform.
Get involved with the Redmond Chamber.
Getting involved in some of the projects and events we run is a great way to give back to the community, and to be part of something that supports the place we love living and working in. From volunteering at and/or sponsoring one of our many community events like the Annual Awards Banquet, Central Oregon Business Expo, Music On The Green, 4th of July Parade, Redmond Brewfest & Nightglow, Annual Golf Tournament, Trick or Treat on 6th Street, Starlight Parade and Holiday
Village Market to hosting a Coffee Clatter, Business After Hours, Ribbon Cutting, etc., getting involved in the Redmond Chamber of Commerce is one of the most effective ways to support our community and to bring exposure to your business all at the same time. If you’re interested in the different ways you or your business can get involved, contact us for more information.
Write a Member Byte for the Business Newsletter.
Share your knowledge and expertise or simply introduce your business and market an event by writing a Member Byte for our monthly Business Newsletter. Your Member Byte with us can be just the extra push your business needs to spread the word about who you are or the services you offer…plus it’s free for our members to do! We send out our digital Business Newsletter to our entire membership base monthly to maximize exposure and to keep our members updated on our upcoming activities so feel free to take advantage of this benefit each month if you’re inclined to do so.
Host a Lunch & Learn.
Do you have the skills and desire to deliver a Lunch & Learn with us? Our Lunch & Learn sessions are one-hour, practical training, seminar or teaching sessions hosted by members for members and provide the opportunity to share your knowledge with other members, whilst raising your profile in the Chamber network. Each Lunch & Learn allows you to open up your presentation to Q&A’s both by Zoom and in person on your expert topic. If you’re new to the Redmond Chamber, we recommend you spend a bit of time getting to know the Chamber community. When you’re ready, get in touch with Amanda Joe, our Events Director, about hosting a Lunch & Learn in the future.
Don’t forget the Visitor Guides!
As a Redmond Chamber member, your business is automatically listed in our annual Official Visitor & Business Guide for the City of Redmond. Visitor
guides are often the first resource tourists and individuals moving to the area turn to when they arrive in a new city. Being listed in this reputable guide means your business is put directly in front of a large audience actively looking for things to do, places to visit or for preferred vendors offering certain goods and services. We distribute our Official Visitor & Business Guides to thousands of businesses and individuals throughout the state, region and nation year round. Come by the Chamber and grab a handful of these guides to display and to show off your featured business.
When in doubt, don’t forget to use the Chamber as a resource.
We’re here to help if you need anything from business information, to connecting you with in-depth business support and resources. Whether that’s help with finding grants and funding, local business support programs or using our network and many connections to help your business. Even if we can’t help directly, we probably know someone who can.
Don’t be a stranger!
Last and by no means least, if you’re more active and engaged with your membership, you’ll get much more out of it. Your membership is for you, and your team, to use. Stay in touch with what’s happening at the Redmond Chamber of Commerce by making sure you and your team are on our mailing list. We’ll send you thoughtfully curated content, upcoming events, business support, and exclusive member-only content.
I hope these top ten tips will be useful in your start to getting the most of your membership with the Redmond Chamber of Commerce. Let us know how we can better serve you and we’ll hopefully see you soon!

The digital revolution is here. It's changing how work gets done, how industries are structured, and how people from all walks of life work, behave, and relate to each other. To thrive in a world driven by data and powered by algorithms, we must learn to see, think, and act in new ways. We need to develop a digital mindset. But what does that mean? This book introduces three approaches-Collaboration, Computation, and Change-that you need for a digital mindset and the perspectives and actions within each approach that will enable you to develop the digital skills you need. With a digital mindset, you can ask the right questions, make smart decisions, and appreciate new possibilities for a digital future.
This book demystifies the artificial intelligence tool that can answer questions, write essays, and generate just about any kind of text it's asked for. This powerful example of generative AI is widely predicted to upend education and business. You'll learn how ChatGPT works and how you can operate it in a way that yields satisfactory results. You'll also explore the ethics of using AI-generated content for various purposes. Written by a journalist who's been on the front lines of artificial intelligence for over a decade, this book dives deep into ChatGPT's potential, so you can make informed decisionswithout asking ChatGPT for help.
