come signs to our office. The Redmond Chamber of Commerce has been providing visitors with the most comprehensive information on Redmond and the surrounding area for over a century now; and with the internet, visitors from all over the world have access to our abundance of local and regional information seven days a week, 365 days a year at www.visitredmondoregon.com. Gone are the days where we had to stock large amounts of brochures from all over, as we can pull brochure information from all over and print it off as needed. The Redmond Chamber and CVB is largely the first point of contact for the Redmond community, whether it is by phone, mail, email, website, or by stopping by in person. Many of the people I talk with, still are not sure what “CVB” stands for at the end of our name (Convention and Visitors Bureau). As a Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, we are continuously working with our conference partners and looking to bring in new group business to the area. When a group selects Redmond as a location, we offer a wide range of hospitality services that make their event run smoothly, and we hope, ultimately makes the event successful. We also can help plan weddings, family reunions, or any other event that might be interested in coming Redmond. Are you taking full advantage of your Chamber membership? As much as I love winter and snow, I love all that spring has to offer. Last year, we were still neck deep in snow and spring did not even seem possible to imagine. Even if the weather does not want to cooperate, I still feel excited to welcome a new season. Speaking of welcoming, the Redmond Chamber has added 30 new members since the start of the year. We are so excited to welcome all of our new member to the Chamber and to connect them to the Community. Hospice of Redmond

Hospice of Redmond has partnered with General Duffy’s Waterhole and Dustin Riley Events to host Bingo Blitz on Tuesday nights in Febru-

ary in support of children attending Camp Sunrise this June. Camp Sunrise is an annual bereavement camp for children ages seven to 14 who reside in Deschutes, Jefferson and Crook counties and is offered at no charge. Structured games, music, art, stories, and other therapies teach the children about grief and how to understand their feelings. With support by professionals, trained staff and volunteers, children share their experiences and gain skills to help them begin moving through the healing process. “The camp is truly founded on the understanding that every child deserves the opportunity to grieve in a safe, supportive, and understanding environment. With loving support, children grieving a death can share their experience with acceptance as they move through the healing process. It can be a scary and challenging process, but we are here to help the children and families understand how to grieve and begin to heal,” said Diane Kellstrom, Bereavement Coordinator for Hospice of Redmond. Hospice of Redmond also offers specially designed sessions for parents, which provide skills to strengthen their understanding of how to be an effective support system for their children. Post-camp support is offered to the campers’ parents to further enhance the grieving child’s journey to health. To find out more information about Camp Sunrise or how to apply, visit www. hospiceofredmond.org/camp-sunrise.html. To support and spread awareness about Camp Sunrise, Hospice of Redmond hosted Bingo Blitz Tuesdays in February at General Duffy’s Waterhole: Redmond's Best FUNdraiser and home to "The Give Back," giving back to our community while giving more to our guests. sphere that puts bingo on everyone's bucket list. Bingo Blitz is extraordinary bingo flipped on its head, with four rounds of high energy bingo played in two hours, stuffed with prizes, surprises and live entertainment. General Duffy's Waterhole is a local tap house & food cart gathering; dedicated to delivering the people of Redmond and Central Oregon an exciting, authentic, new experience to enjoy. The tap room opens for the event at 6 PM and the entrance fee is five dollars. Bingo games start at 6:30 PM and end around 8:30 PM. “Our goal with Bingo Blitz is to raise enough money to be able to send one child to Camp Sunrise,” said Maureen Dooley from Hospice of Redmond. “Each year, Hospice of Redmond can put on Camp Sunrise through our own funds as well as generous donors throughout the community, in order to ensure that children can attend free of charge. Camp Sunrise is always free for the families who attend, as this support for children experiencing these traumatic events in their lives is so necessary throughout our community. Bingo Blitz is not only a fun event, but also allows us to make the community aware of this program and raise funds to send more children to Camp Sunrise.” If you would like to donate to support Camp Sunrise and ensure that every child attends free of charge, visit hospiceofredmond.org or attend Bingo Blitz!

Family Access Network

The Family Access Network (FAN) Foundation’s third annual Redmond Luncheon fundraiser was held on January 31st at Elton Gregory Middle School. With almost 120 guests, this event raised over $53,000 for Redmond FAN. SunWest Builders provided the Title Sponsorship for the third year. The 28 other monetary and in-kind event sponsors were key to making the event possible. The generosity of individuals

who made one-time and sustaining donations was essential to helping FAN reach our fundraising goal; furthermore, one-time donations or monthly gifts totaling $100 or more were matched by the Maybelle Clark Macdonald Fund, doubling the impact. “It is an honor to receive such impactful support from the Redmond Community. These funds go directly to helping Redmond children thrive in school and beyond, and it is thanks to our dedicated supporters that we can do this important work. On behalf of the FAN Foundation, we’d like to thank all of our incredible donors, sponsors, and table captains who made this event possible. Together, we are making a difference in the lives of local kids and families!” -- Julie Lyche, FAN Foundation Executive Director. Unique to Central Oregon, FAN began in 1993 and currently employs 29 advocates in 59 public schools (K-12) and early childhood sites across Central Oregon. The direct placement of FAN advocates within the public schools and early childhood sites allows FAN to effectively reach and connect disadvantaged children and families to essential basic needs. To learn more about the Family Access Network, please visit www.familyaccessnetwork.org or call (541) 693-5675. Family Access Network’s mission is to offer assistance, possibility and hope to Central Oregon families in need by connecting them with crucial resources that will help children flourish in school and in life. In the 2018-19 school year, FAN advocates improved the lives of over 9,300 children and family members in Central Oregon.

News about the people who are the driving force behind our members

Marc Madron Mid Oregon Credit Union announced the expansion of its Commercial Services team, promoting branch manager Marc Madron to the role of Commercial Deposit Relationship Officer. Madron will focus on meeting the needs of Mid Oregon’s growing business membership, as well as expanding his involvement in underwriting commercial loans and assisting branch teams in meeting the needs of local business owners. “I am very excited about adding Marc to our growing Commercial Services team,” says Steve Ferber, Director of Commercial Services for Mid Oregon. “Marc has a strong understanding of Mid Oregon, and has played a pivotal role helping to implement our Small Business Lending initiative. In his time at the Sisters branch, he was instrumental in reaching out to the business community and determining how Mid Oregon could meet their needs for business services. He’s active in the Sisters Chamber, as well as in local youth sports as a coach and volunteer.” Marc’s promotion into this role has been part of

Mid Oregon’s nearly two-year effort to significantly expand and develop its Commercial Services capabilities. These efforts have included introducing Remote Deposit Capture and ACH origination services for businesses, as well as announcing a new Workforce Housing Loan Program in December 2019. In mid-April, Mid Oregon will also release an updated Digital Banking platform with enhanced features for businesses. The institution has experienced strong business deposit growth, now serving more than 1,800 business depositors. Business lending has also been brisk, funding more than $18 million in commercial loans in 2019, and holding approximately $50 million in outstanding business loans. Before moving into this role, Madron served Mid Oregon for approximately three years as the manager at the Sisters Branch location. Another member of the Sisters Branch team, Lara Eckstine, has moved into the manager’s position vacated by Madron.

MILKEN INSTITUTE RANKS BEND-REDMOND MSA #1 BEST PERFORMING SMALL CITY AN UNPRECEDENTED FOUR YEARS IN A ROW #1 FIVE-YEAR WAGE GROWTH, #2 FIVE-YEAR JOB GROWTH Los Angeles-based Milken Institute released their 2020 yearly findings to the Best Performing Small Cities study, naming the Bend-Redmond MSA (Metropolitan Statistic Area) the Best Performing Small City in the country for the fourth consecutive year. Over the past 20+ years, no other large or small metro has held the #1 ranking more than two years in a row. All nine key indicators the Milken Institute uses to compile these listings ranked the Bend-Redmond MSA in the top 30 out of a total of 201 small U.S. metros. The report specifically mentioned high-tech GDP growth and high-tech GDP concentration as contributing to the region’s economic expansion, sectors Economic Development for Central Oregon (EDCO) has

dedicated both emphasis and effort to over the past decade. Roger Lee, EDCO’s CEO, noted “We have come to anticipate this report as both a measure of success for our economic development work as well as a barometer on areas we can improve upon. I’m particularly proud of the manufacturing employment growth cited in the report: over 2,100 new jobs since the previous year. Additionally, in the past eight years overall manufacturing jobs have grown by 60% and total wages by nearly 90%. This report further proves EDCO’s efforts are creating a positive impact on our regional economy.” Below is an excerpt from the report, which can be found in its entirety here:

“For the fourth year in a row, BendRedmond, OR, ranks first on the BestPerforming Small Cities Index. All of its indicators rank in the top 30. Clear standouts are the first-place ranking for five-year wage growth, second-place ranking on five-year job growth, and fifth-place rankings on five-year high-tech GDP growth and high-tech concentration. Once more, the metro posted high ranks in its five-year metrics with consistent high ranks in its one-year indicators. The metro’s five-year ranks should remain a source of strength for the near term. While the metro has lost a few spots on the number of concentrated high-tech industries (LQ > 1), its diverse economy is anchored by more traditional industries.”

ECONOMIC update

By REDI Staff, Mary Knight

IF IT WASN'T FOR REDI...

Do you ever wonder what goes on behindthe-scenes to make a city like Redmond so livable? Many citizens have chosen Redmond because of its size, character, pace of life, and affordability. In this article we’ll re-introduce you to Redmond Economic Development, Inc. (REDI), who works tirelessly to help companies create jobs. We pose the question: “If it wasn’t for REDI…”

Sisters. Since relocating, they are now one of Redmond’s top employers with over 240 workers. But REDI doesn’t just help large employers. Their portfolio is dominated by small businesses that employ less than 50 workers such as Poltex, Riff Cold Brewed Coffee, Composite Approach, and Straw Propeller Gourmet Foods, just to name a few.

…Where would I work? REDI advocates for Redmond’s traded sector companies (those whose majority of goods and/or services are exported outside the region, which imports wealth) and assists them, start to finish, in the business of relocation, expansion or start-up support. For example, a start-up company with only a few employees from Tualatin, OR. needed space to build modular clean rooms. REDI partnered with the Redmond Chamber of Commerce to suggest they relocate to an abandoned Walmart building in Redmond and BasX was born. BasX now employs over 100 central Oregonians and was Portland Business Journal’s fastest growing company in 2016. Another company, Medline ReNewal (formerly MediSISS), was once a single-digit employer refurbishing single-use medical devices in

…Where would I live? It isn’t uncommon in the current economic climate to move to Central Oregon without having a job first. That might seem risky to some, however opportunities for employment in Central Oregon are abundant. Perhaps one of the companies mentioned above happens to be the place you found your dream job. REDI works closely with the City and other partners to track housing and make sure current and future employees of the companies we help can afford to live here. …Where would I play? REDI helps business thrive in a place people work all year just to visit! Recreation and lifestyle are common reasons people want to live here. As REDI helps companies create jobs, the tax base increas-

es, which results in additional funding for parks, roads, safety, and other essential services that the City provides. …How would I thrive? Redmond has a reputation of being the “Hub of Manufacturing” in Central Oregon. REDI focuses on traded sector industries such as manufacturing because retail and tourism-based companies are unable to sustain an economy on their own and because they offer living-wage jobs. Keep in mind, traded sector companies need not be large corporations in order to drive overall growth in the economy. If it wasn’t for me, how would REDI survive? REDI couldn’t do the important work they do without the financial support of investors and event sponsors. REDI is a non-profit (not charitable) that receives funding from public partners and financial contributions from private businesses and individuals. These funds support, in part, creation and implementation of an annually updated, three-year strategic action plan that sets the long-term vision and parameters for day-to-day operations.

The business development work REDI does is done with a lean and smart budget. In 2008, REDI’s operating budget was $100,000 a year. Today, with public and private support, that figure has more than doubled in size – to $230,000 a year. In the next 20 years, however, Redmond’s population is set to reach 50,000. In order to continue to help businesses, REDI is asking for your financial support. They are counting on current and new investment each year to help keep in line with increasing demand for their (free-to-clients) services. Want to know more? Join us at REDI News & Brews! If you are interested in learning more about the clandestine work REDI does and supporting their efforts by becoming an investor, join them at News & Brews on March 11th. To register, visit rediinfo. com/events. Hear the REDI story from the perspective of a company new to the Redmond community and get an update on current projects, presented by REDI Sr. Director Jon Stark.

A RECIPE scrumptious FROM THE RANCH ALPACA MEAT APPETIZERS

At Alpaca Country Estates, you'll find a healthy and delicious alternative to beef! By Jim Cornelius | Recipes & Photos by Vicki Curlett

Alpaca meat is an alternative to beef — and it is catching on in the food world. “Alpaca meat is one of the healthiest and most flavorful meats in the world,” Sierra Meats reports. “It is described as a mild meat which takes on the flavor of the dish. It is slightly salty, tender and lean, high in protein with no fatty aftertaste. Alpaca meat also has the lowest level of cholesterol of any meat.” Art Izer and Nancy Chapel-Izer can testify to the qualities of alpaca meat — and not just because they own and operate an alpaca ranch in Central Oregon. “Art had a heart attack three years ago,” Nancy told Celebrate! He had high cholesterol, and required stents to open blockages. A cardiologist consulted with him on his diet.

STUFFED ITALIAN SAUSAGE MUSHROOMS Makes 12 mushrooms

12 extra large white or cremini mushrooms 3 tbsps. olive oil 3 tbsps. dry marsala wine 1 lb. ground Italian alpaca sausage or ground Italian pork sausage 3 cloves, finely minced garlic 1 tsp. salt 1/2 tsp. ground black pepper 2/3 cup plain panko breadcrumbs 1/3 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese blend (preferably with Asiago & Romano cheese) 4 ounces softened Boursin herb garlic cheese 4 ounces shredded fontina or mozzarella cheese

Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Place mushroom caps in a bowl and toss with the olive oil and marsala wine. Set aside. Heat another 3 tbsps. of olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the sausage, crumbling with a spoon and cook until outside of meat is pale and a medium rare, stirring frequently, but do not brown. Do not overcook alpaca (it will cook further in the oven). Add the garlic, salt and pepper and cook for another 2-3 minutes. Remove from the heat, cool slightly. Stir in breadcrumbs, Parmesan, and Boursin. Place a mushroom cap in each of 12 muffin tin compartments, cap side down. Divide the remaining olive oil/marsala from pan and put about ¼ tsp. in each cap hole. Using a small to medium ice cream scoop depending on size of the mushroom caps, place enough filling in the cap to create a mound, pressing onto mushroom. Top mushrooms with shredded fontina cheese. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until the cheese is melted and slightly browned.

“They said, ‘You know, you’ve got the natural thing right there,’” Nancy recalled. “‘You should be eating alpaca meat because it’s so lean.’” Art began eating alpaca instead of beef on a regular basis and, Nancy reports, within a year, his cholesterol had hit normal levels. “We have it a lot,” Nancy said. “We don’t buy beef now. We use it for spaghetti; we use it for hamburgers; we have a round steak we use for fajitas. Tonight we’re having a roast from the neck.” Much as is the case with game meat, preparation is key. “The flavor is wonderful,” Nancy said. “The big secret is, you can’t over-cook it. You can’t have it well-done.”

BAKED PERUVIAN MEATBALLS

Makes approximately 18, 1.5" Meatballs 1 lb. ground meat – alpaca or beef 2 tbsps. Gourmet Garden Chunky Garlic Stir-In Paste 3 tsps. Gourmet Garden Cilantro Stir-In Paste 1/2 small onion finely chopped 2 tsps. cumin 1/2 tsp. pimenton (Spanish smoked paprika) 1/4 cup panko breadcrumbs 1 egg, beaten 1 tsp. salt Olive oil cooking spray

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Put ground meat in a large mixing bowl. Add garlic, cilantro, onion, cumin, pimenton, breadcrumbs, egg and salt. Mix thoroughly but gently with your hands to combine. Do not over mix or meatballs will become tough. Using a medium ice cream scoop, form into 1.5" balls. Lightly spray a 24-cup mini muffin tin with olive oil and place individual meatballs in each compartment. Bake approximately 15-18 minutes until meatballs are slightly firm to the touch. Spoon green sauce over each meatball or on the side in a small condiment cup. Stick a frilly toothpick in each meatball to serve as an appetizer.

GREEN SAUCE

3 jalapeño chili peppers, remove half the seeds and ribs for a medium hot sauce, adjust to your taste, roughly chopped 1 cup packed fresh cilantro leaves 2 cloves garlic, roughly chopped 1/2 cup good quality mayonnaise, not Miracle Whip 1/4 cup sour cream 1 tblsp. fresh lime juice, from one lime 1/2 tsp. salt 1/8 tsp. freshly ground black pepper 2 tblsps. extra virgin olive oil

Combine all ingredients except olive oil in a blender and blend into a smooth sauce. With motor running, open lid and slowly drizzle in olive oil. It will seem runny, but will thicken up as it sits. Cover and refrigerate until ready to serve.

WHAT MAKES A GOOD LEADER? The Characteristics of what Leaders Should Be.

“If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.” – John Quincy Adams We often find ourselves in a leadership position at certain times in life. As an employer, we calculate the best way to lead our employees so our business can run smoothly. When volunteering at a fundraiser, we may find ourselves in a leadership role guiding others. Whatever the role, a good leader possesses certain qualities that guide them along. This has been pressing on my mind for some time, so I began researching common characteristics of a good leader. Communication is crucial to good leadership. If the direction is not clear, the team may fall short of expectations. It is important to set the vision and establish a positive and encouraging work environment. A leader has an open dialog throughout a project in order to reach the desired outcome with efficiency and clarity. They should illustrate empathy in understanding the needs of others and establish personal connections with those around them. They also address the short comings in a way that is not antagonistic, but rather in a problem-solving mindset where the conversation is steered toward the future outcome instead of the prior failures. A good leader can delegate and trust others will perform and be successful without micromanaging. Not only that, but they lead by discussing ideas and concerns of the team and adapting the plan to fit to the overall goal they are trying to obtain. There are many great

ideas out there if one listens. It is a key factor between success and failure. A leader can encourage and influence the creativity and enthusiasm in others. They give credit where credit is due and take pride in the work of their team. The focus becomes less on the success of oneself and more on the success of others. They are positive and optimistic and influence the overall moral of the team. Humility is a significant in good leadership. A leader comprehends they cannot achieve the result without their team. When the outcome falls short it is easy to point the finger at others, but a good leader is ready to take their share of the blame. They admit when they make a mistake and come up with a strategy to improve where they fell short previously. Lastly, a good leader knows the history of the past. They research what has worked and what hasn’t in order to not waste time reinventing the wheel. History is power and knowledge. We cannot begin to improve until we have an understanding of how we got here. Redmond Executive Association and the Redmond Chamber of Commerce co-sponsor a program each year called Leadership Redmond. This program covers the history of Redmond, the structure of our governments, personality tests and character traits, various volunteer programs and community board opportunities. The purpose of this program is to encourage others to become leaders and introduce them to some of the leadership opportunities this town has to offer. Many of our city councilmen and committee members have taken this. It is also a great way to get involved and connect with others. I’m still in contact

with a large group of my leadership class of 2011. I encourage anyone wanting to know more about Redmond, the volunteer opportunities available, or perhaps just to understand how our town is run to contact the Redmond Chamber for more information about this program. Tax Tips A common question I get is how a client can keep their tax preparation invoice down. The first and foremost thing is be organized. The more an accountant has to sort, total and organize before preparing the return, the more it is going to cost. Make sure to bring in most if not all the documents at one time. We understand that sometimes one document may be delayed and that is okay. But sending documents piece by piece not only increases the chance of something getting missed, it also increases the number of times the accountant has picked up and opened your file which in turn could result in more fees. Also, a funny but true fact. Accountants do NOT like staples. They are an evil diabolical nemesis created just to give accountants a hard time during tax season. Whether we are making digital copies or paper copies of the items you bring in, we must take the staples out. Sometimes the document will tear during this process. Sometimes we miss a staple and the paper feeder on our copy machine annihilates the poor defenseless document without mercy. You might find a wrinkled haphazardly taped up page with a sticky note, “sorry!” in your original paperwork. Paperclips are great and easily slip off while making copies. Use these instead. They are our friends.
