If you love history don’t miss Landmark Center. This “castle” downtown is where famous gangsters were tried and the act that enforced Prohibition was written. Today it’s a free arts and cultural center that’s ready to welcome you to Saint Paul. Twin Cities’ parks systems rank as the top in the nation. Harriet Island is one of the many free parks. We also recommend Indian Mounds Park, Bruce Vento Nature Sanctuary and Crosby Farm Park. Have a picnic, hike the Mississippi River or see if there’s an event going on. Como Zoo and Conservatory is family-friendly, free and open 365 days a year. In addition to all of the animals, don’t miss the 105-year-old Marjorie McNeely Conservatory, the Sunken Garden and the Japanese Garden. You can enjoy the sights and sounds of the lively Saint Paul Farmers’ Market without reaching into your wallet. The outdoor market in Lowertown is always hoppin’. During colder months, check out the indoor market at Markethouse Collaborative.

#MYSAINTPAUL INSIDER TIPS: • There are so many different festivals. Hmong New Year is amazing, Wilder Fest is a street fair in our neighborhood and you have to go to the Minnesota State Fair— where else do you feel OK having minidonuts and fried pickles at 9 a.m.? • We recommend seeking out American Indian events. Saint Paul rests on Dakota land and the history of native people is embedded here. The Minnesota Historical Society is a great resource for finding Native events and activities. •C omo Park is one of our favorite spots— check out the bike path, paddle board rentals, the zoo and movies in the park. • For a night out with our kids we like Can Can Wonderland. • And for those nights without kids we recommend a show at Palace Theatre or going to a new brewery. Check out BlackStack, Barrel Theory Beer Company or Lake Monster Brewing.

#MYSAINTPAUL INSIDER TIPS: • Our teams play in world-class venues—check out the Saints at CHS Field, the Wild at Xcel Energy Center or MN United FC when they move into Allianz Field. • I really like going to museums— the Science Museum of Minnesota and the Omnitheater and the traveling exhibits at the Minnesota History Center. I’m excited for the new Minnesota Museum of American Art to open. • Visiting the Mississippi River is a must, whether at one of the parks or from a bridge downtown. • When you get hungry, try Meritage for the cassoulet—you’ll think you traveled to France. Herbie’s on the Park inspired by Herb Brooks is a great lunch spot and On’s Thai Kitchen is my favorite for Southeast Asian food.
Professional soccer team Minnesota United FC is building a new home in Saint Paul’s Midway neighborhood— Allianz Field is slated to open in the spring of 2019.

How did Saint Paul become the state’s original source for craft beer? That depends on how far back you want to go. • In 1838, the area’s pioneering settler, Pierre “Pig’s Eye” Parrant, created a tavern at the mouth of a Mississippi River cave near Fort Snelling. • First opened in 1857 and reopened in 2017, Waldmann Brewery & Wurstery is the oldest surviving saloon building in the Twin Cities. •S ummit Brewing Co. was brewing craft beer before it was cool. Learn more about Minnesota’s first craft brewery, founded in 1986, with a tour at their location just off West 7th Street.
Beer bars like The Happy Gnome and The Muddy Pig on Selby Avenue cater to the craft beer lover. Not to mention scotch and whisky. Exceptionally crafted cocktails can be found at Saint Dinette in Lowertown and Vieux Carré, downtown.

< Hungry yet? You can never go wrong pairing your favorite beer with a delicious food truck menu item. Many of Saint Paul’s taprooms host different food trucks each night.

Wabasha Street Caves has so many to choose from—the Gangster Tour, Irish Heritage Tour, Scandinavian Heritage Tour or Rivers and Roots Tour. • We love taking tourists to the Cathedral of Saint Paul. It’s the only Beaux Arts style architecture in a church in the United States—it feels like Paris. • I ndian Mounds Park is one of our favorite sites. It’s home to six Native American burial mounds high atop 450-million-year-old limestone and sandstone bluffs overlooking the city. • End your day at Rice Park. You’ve got the Saint Paul Hotel, Pazzaluna for dinner, Park Square Theatre for a show, and Vieux Carré for live Jazz.
GANGSTERS AND OUTLAWS
During the Prohibition era, Saint Paul was the hotbed for gangsters, molls and whiskey. Gangster tours highlight the sites of nightclubs, kidnappings and gun battles. Tour the famous Wabasha Street Caves to hear tales of gangsters and ghosts of Saint Paul’s past. The caves once housed a nightclub frequented by John Dillinger, Ma Barker and other notorious criminals; it is now on the register of haunted places and hosts Swing Night Thursdays. @valerie.e.hsu

SAINT PAUL IS FILLED WITH STUNNING ARCHITECTURE THAT SERVES AS THE BACKBONE OF ITS UNIQUE, DIVERSE AND CHARISMATIC STREETS AND NEIGHBORHOODS. CATHEDRAL OF SAINT PAUL
One of the most impressive cathedrals in the United States, the Cathedral of Saint Paul sits on a hill overlooking downtown Saint Paul and the Mississippi River. It is the third-largest Catholic church building in the country. Guided tours are offered Tuesday through Friday at 1:00 p.m. More at cathedralsaintpaul.org.
THE MARJORIE MCNEELY CONSERVATORY AT COMO ZOO Designed in
1914 by architect Frederick Nussbaumer, the conservatory is one of very few glassdomed Victorian-style indoor gardens in the U.S. The garden is home to more than 260 varieties of plants. Open every day of the year. Details at comozooconservatory.org.
LANDMARK CENTER
Originally built as a courthouse in 1886, the Landmark Center serves as an arts and cultural center for the city. Its beautiful, castle-like design of turrets, spires, a clock tower, and red clay tile roof are emblematic of Romanesque Revival architecture. Open every day. Hours vary. More at landmarkcenter.org.
MINNESOTA CAPITOL
Designed by influential architect Cass Gilbert, the Capitol building features the second-largest self-supporting marble dome in the world. Tours of this masterpiece feature the impressive rotunda, grand staircases, amazing murals and works of art, including the gold quadriga representing the four elements of earth, air, water and fire on the building’s exterior. Details at mnhs.org/ capitol.
The Summit Hill House Tour, held every other year, is your chance to get a peek inside these beautiful homes.
SUMMIT AVENUE
This five-mile boulevard connects the Mississippi River to the cusp of downtown. It is home to the longest stretch of intact Victorian architecture in the United States—most built between the Civil War and World War I. Mark your calendars! On Sunday, September 30th, 2018 the Summit Hill Association will hold its biennial Summit Hill House Tour. 32

Retired architect with a passion for our State Capitol building
An architect for over 40 years, Ted served as president of the Cass Gilbert Society and was on the commission that oversaw the restoration of the Capitol building. A Summit Avenue homeowner since the ’70s, Ted was active in the historic preservation of that area. #MYSAINTPAUL INSIDER TIPS: • Tour the newly renovated Minnesota State Capitol. If it’s a nice day, call the number on the big French doors to stand in the loggia. Cass Gilbert designed this public balcony’s walls and ceiling of white marble to open to the downtown skyline and the Cathedral of Saint Paul. • Go to the Alexander Ramsey House. It is literally a walk back into 1870—every room has original furniture and art. • Summit Avenue is an architectural event. There’s a graciousness to this four-mile, tree-lined boulevard with three colleges, multiple churches and hundreds of grand homes. • After exploring the city, I like to take visitors to J. Selby’s on Selby and Victoria. It’s a plant-based restaurant with the best wrap sandwich I’ve ever had. My recommendation for dessert—Cafe Latte.

Voted Best Eat Street: Payne Avenue –St. Paul Pioneer Press
COME HUNGRY! SOME OF THE CITY’S BEST FLAVORS ARE ON THE EAST SIDE OF THE MISSISSIPPI.
Try Korean inspired influences at Cook St. Paul. Brunson’s Pub, named for St. Paul’s original land surveyor, serves up scratch made food, craft cocktails and 20 craft beer taps. Local craft beers can be found at Saint Paul’s Flat Earth. Delicious and charming places to put on your “must” list include Swede Hollow Café, Caydence Records & Coffee and Tongue in Cheek. Between
eating, make time to visit the trails, urban parks, Lake Phalen and the Dakota sacred site at Indian Mounds Regional Park, which overlooks downtown Saint Paul. Attend the Dragon Festival, a celebration of Pan-Asian heritage and spirit held in July, the White Bear Avenue Parade also in July and the Payne Arcade Harvest Festival & Parade in September.

@dogwoodcoffee
Imagine a neighborhood purposely formed to include artists, makers and entrepreneurs of every type—that’s what you’ll find in the Creative Enterprise Zone off the Raymond Avenue Station stop. There’s an artist-designed mini golf course here called Can Can Wonderland and Lumberjack City where you can throw an axe. This is where you can do some retro shopping and eat at the Colossal Café—their cinnamon roll is out of this world. Looking for breweries? You’ll find them here! Lake Monster, Bang, Urban Growler, Dual Citizen and BlackStack are all in this area. There’s lots of coffee, too—including three roasters, and coffee shops like Workhorse Coffee Bar and Dogwood Coffee. Don’t miss Saint Anthony Park’s Milton Square, a quaint European-style complex that’s home to a bookstore, wine shop, tea room and boutique.

Little Mekong This neighborhood gets its name from the Mekong River, which flows from China through Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. You’ll find the Hmong Cultural Center here, Western Sculpture Garden and Little Mekong Plaza, a community gathering space on University Avenue. One weekend a month, from July to October, look for the Little Mekong Night Market, patterned after the sprawling, lavish night markets in Asia. You can’t miss a stop at Hmongtown Marketplace to explore the shops and food stand. There’s also Heritage Tea House Boutique, featuring over 24 loose-leaf teas from around the world. Ride the Green Line to Western Avenue Station and Little Mekong is between Mackubin and Galtier Streets along University Avenue.
Little Africa You don’t have to cross the Atlantic to get a feel for Eritrea, Ethiopia, Nigeria, or Somalia. Just visit Little Africa, a district on the Green Line along University and Snelling Avenues. You’ll find astoundingly beautiful murals that were created as part of the Midway Mural Project, which paired public artists with immigrant business owners to create murals that weave together the theme of “starting anew.” Stop at Snelling Café for East African and traditional American dishes, Fasika Ethiopian Restaurant for Ethiopian fare, or Sabrina’s Café & Deli for a latte and sambusa, and to experience the traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony. Shop AJ International Mall selling traditional clothing, jewelry, scarves and more. Attend Little Africa Fest in August where you can see live music and dance, hear poetry and taste African cuisine.

Rondo & Frogtown Historic Rondo and Frogtown are two of the most ethnically diverse communities in the region. There is great pride in these neighborhoods and you’ll see it in Frogtown Farm, a 12.7 acre park and one of the largest urban farms in the country. That pride is also in the Hallie Q. Brown Community Center, the Rondo Community Library and the Penumbra Theatre. And it carries through in celebrations like Rondo Days held in July, the Selby Avenue Jazz Festival in September and in the Rondo Commemorative Plaza and Victoria Theatre now under construction. There are plenty of ethnic restaurants to visit and places to shop. Stop in and enjoy the jazz inspired Golden Thyme Coffee & CafÊ or Ngon Vietnamese Bistro, a farm-to-fork eatery. Have pho at Trieu Chau Restaurant, and visit Wonders Ice Cream, Homi Restaurante Mexicano and Ai Hue Bakery. Frogtown and Rondo are located on the Green Line between Dale Street and Lexington Parkway.

Saint Paul has always been filled with doers. People ready to roll up their sleeves to make things happen for their region, their country and the world as a whole. It’s a place to work, to live, to learn, to create. A place dedicated to cultivating an environment where every type of business—from innovative international companies to small startups—can locate and grow.
insider Mayor Melvin Carter Mayor Carter’s family has had its roots in the Rondo and Frogtown neighborhoods of Saint Paul for four generations. He believes the combination of the city’s history, the Mississippi riverfront, its multiculturalism, great transportation (including the Green Line) and great local restaurants with dishes from Italy, East Africa, Southeast Asia and Central America make Saint Paul a special experience for visitors and residents. He invites everyone to visit the Rondo and Frogtown neighborhoods to experience the history and contribution these special places have made to life in Saint Paul. The Hallie Q. Brown Community Center and Frogtown Neighborhood Association are two resources he highly recommends for background about these communities and information about giving back. #MYSAINTPAUL INSIDER TIPS: • If you’re in town, don’t miss Rondo Days in June or Selby Jazz Festival in September. • See a show at the amazing Penumbra Theater.
“Saint Paul is an eclectic mix of everything from charming neighborhoods to bustling cultural corridors, fantastic parks and outdoor activities.”
• Get a smooth cup of coffee at Golden Thyme Coffee. • Stop and explore our cultural corridors— Little Mekong, Little Africa and District del Sol. • Catch a live game or show at Xcel Energy Center. • My favorite thing to do with my family is ice skate. We’re in the bold north and taking up outdoor activities is one of the best ways to make the most of the cold season.

Scott Burns’ company, Structural, is a software company that solves one of the fundamental challenges of modern work—it uses people data to find and activate the right talent at the right time to close deals, solve problems and form winning teams. Structural is located in Osborn370, a building that houses numerous innovative companies right in the center of downtown. He feels it’s easier to stand out and build a reputation in Saint Paul because it’s a city where people like to get to know and support each other. #MYSAINTPAUL INSIDER TIPS: • We have three young kids and recommend the great museums downtown—the Minnesota History Museum, the Science Museum and the newly-renovated Minnesota Children’s Museum. • If you’re a cross-country skier, try the Battle Creek trail. • When we’re not with the kids, we like Tin Whiskers Brewery, the Bad Weather Brewery and the Amsterdam Bar. Vieux Carré is the place to go for great cocktails and music.
