THINGS TO DO

Only in Saint Paul

1

Get centered

2

3

Get outside

If you love history, don’t miss Landmark Center. This “castle” downtown is where famous gangsters were tried and the act that enforced Prohibition was written. Today, it’s a free arts and cultural center that’s ready to welcome you to Saint Paul.

Twin Cities’ parks systems rank as the top in the nation. Harriet Island is one of the many free parks. We also recommend Indian Mounds Park, Bruce Vento Nature Sanctuary and Crosby Farm Park. Have a picnic, hike the Mississippi River or see if there’s an event going on.

5

6

Get moved

Step into the 1920s at Union Depot. It serves as a transportation hub, event center, architectural inspiration and much more. The building is open to the public and you can catch a free tour every other Tuesday at 11 a.m.

Get together

Como Zoo and Conservatory is family-friendly, free and open 365 days a year. In addition to all of the animals, don’t miss the 105-year-old Marjorie McNeely Conservatory, the Sunken Garden and the Japanese Garden.

7

Get into it

View, learn and create at the newly renovated and expanded Minnesota Museum of American Art in the historic Pioneer Endicott building. The M holds more than 5,000 artworks that showcase the unique voices of American artists.

Get festive

There’s always some kind of festival going on here, no matter the season. We have the Saint Paul Winter Carnival, Twin Cities Jazz Festival, Little Mekong Night Market, Irish Fair of Minnesota— and the list goes on.

4

Get a taste

You can enjoy the sights and sounds of the lively Saint Paul Farmers’ Market without reaching into your wallet. The outdoor market in Lowertown is always hoppin’. During winter months, check out the indoor markets at Union Depot and Market House Collaborative.

8

Get strolling

Get your exercise and sightseeing along Summit Avenue, the longest stretch of Victorian houses in the United States. Whether you walk, bike or drive down this historic street, the views are stunning in any season.

Explore the scene

With so many outstanding approaches to cuisine, Saint Paul has become a genuine foodie destination. Restaurateur Tim Niver loves being part of it. The evolving, growing, international city has the humble personality of a small town, and the diversity of people, places and flavors is an adventure in itself. His advice: It’s not just one part of this city that makes it great, so get out and explore the neighborhoods— each has its own identity and unique things to see and do.

“There’s a diverse, intimate food scene here where restaurateurs like me still serve, bartend or cook. That breeds a more personal experience.” Tim Niver

Owner, Mucci’s Italian and Saint Dinette

A must-eat list for Saint Paul is always changing, which I think is so cool. So many areas are evolving into foodie destinations—get out and explore.

2

There’s a lot to do as a family—sporting events, rent scooters, go to a park or the museums.

4

Take a walk along the Mississippi River— surrounded by the bluffs and trees, it feels like you’re not in the city. I love the European-inspired architecture and the way it’s been preserved—check out the Capitol, Cathedral and Union Depot.

Shake without ice for 30 seconds. Add ice, shake for 30 seconds or until very frothy. Strain into a tiki-style cocktail glass. Top with two dashes of Peychaud’s bitters. Garnish with umbrella.

Historic appeal

The Lexington offers a luxe setting to nurse a drink from the Old Fashioned menu over live jazz. Try a Fitzgerald or a Zelda at The Commodore, where the famous literary couple lived and drank when the art deco restaurant was also a hotel and speakeasy. A Volstead at The Green Lantern helps ignite conversation of Saint Paul’s famous rogues of old. Gather ‘round the piano bar at Birch’s Lowertown Barrel House, where cabaret, DJs and secret passwords go nicely with rum-based Local Ties. For more speakeasy atmosphere, slip into the Vieux Carré for a drink of the same name. Stay classic with an elegant Bloody Mary at the Saint Paul Grill or absinthe after oysters at Meritage.

Soccer unites passionate fans like few pastimes can, so it’s no small wonder the 2019 opening of Allianz Field is such a big deal. The new home to Major League Soccer’s Minnesota United is among the most cuttingedge and intimate soccer venues in the nation.

What’s new in the Midway? Come see how the neighborhood around Allianz Field is lighting up with dining, music and more. (Get on the Green Line to the Snelling Avenue stop.)

On matchdays, it’s where you’ll find Abe Opoti and his fellow super fans waving flags, beating drums and singing chants of support for their beloved Loons on the pitch. The energy flows beyond the stadium Supporters Section, where groups like Dark Clouds and True North Elite raise scarves in solidarity. They’re an inclusive bunch that extends

a hand to neighbors in need and anyone who shares a passion for “The Beautiful Game.” Newcomers are always invited to join the fun—before, during and after the match. “Saint Paul is a fun, chill place with lots of culture, great food, great events. It’s a place that gets rowdy, yet loves history and learning,” Abe says. “It’s very welcoming.”

“Business is all about relationships and in Saint Paul, business is personal. Leaders in this community are accessible and ready to help you succeed.” Peter Frosch

CEO of GREATER MSP

For new and established businesses alike, now is a prime time to build and expand in Saint Paul, says Peter Frosch, newly named CEO of GREATER MSP, the regional economic development engine. That is due to three reasons: a rising population, public-private partnerships seeding tech sector growth, and expansive new development projects throughout the city. As a resident of the city’s Saint Anthony Park neighborhood, he sees potential being realized every day. There’s a young, diverse workforce supported by the dozen colleges and universities here. There’s the accessibility of a leading international airport 10 minutes from downtown and executive air service even closer at Holman Field. Above all, there’s an inclusive empowering and innovative spirit that connects the people doing business here. “Have an audacious idea? “The easygoing vibe in Saint Paul makes people more approachable. As a startup, people being open to new ideas and ways of thinking is important.” Melissa Kjolsing

Co-founder & CEO of Recovree

Never underestimate the value of community and access to the talent that drives success. Melissa chose Saint Paul for just that reason when she created Recovree, a technology company dedicated to helping more people find recovery from substance use disorder through peer relationships. Specifically, her team wanted to be part of the Osborn370 community to reap the benefits of working alongside experienced entrepreneurs. As part of the Glen Nelson Center’s Ventures in Residence, they’re focused on growth and sustainability while being immersed in a collaborative space that features more women, people of color and age ranges than Melissa has seen in traditional startup spaces. And she’s seen quite a few. She previously led the MN Cup, the largest statewide startup competition in the country, and was founding director of Lunar Startups, an incubator for underestimated entrepreneurs powered by the Knight Foundation and American Public Media. “An inclusive tech community like the Glen Nelson Center is significant, because in order for companies to be competitive in the marketplace, talent needs to reflect the communities companies are trying to serve.” 58

Closer to innovation

Insiders say a groundswell of new ideas and established support in Saint Paul has come together to move talent and potential forward with unified intent. The energy is connecting, inspiring and propelling business across the spectrum. Incubating. Accelerating. Progressing.

• Seeding success for food makers, the Techstars Farm to Fork Accelerator focuses on the tech and digital sides of food and agriculture. Partnered with Cargill and Ecolab, the program seeks the best entrepreneurs from across the food value chain—from AgTech, manufacturing and supply chains to food safety, waste reduction and traceability.

• The Full Stack Saint Paul initiative is actively attracting and expanding tech and innovation companies and building diverse tech talent pipelines through programs like MSP Tech Hire.

• To accelerate the right growth, Saint Paul is expanding capacity for cleaner, more costeffective energy and transportation. As one of 25 cities awarded a grant from Bloomberg Philanthropies’ American Cities Climate Challenge, it has gained powerful new resources to help meet or beat carbon reduction goals. {Goal: carbon-neutral status by 2050}

As an emerging American tech hub, Saint Paul is a place where innovative businesses can locate and thrive. Startups from around the world are coming here for the intensely focused mentorship, support and funding they need to succeed. Here’s a look at some of the ways.

CREATIVE SPACE TO FUEL GROWTH As an innovation hub for business leaders, influencers and risk-takers, Osborn370 in the heart of downtown reflects transformation. Formerly the headquarters for Ecolab, a global leader in economic solutions developed through laboratory research, it now serves as a lab for entrepreneurs. It’s a tech-driven, creative space where you’ll find successful startups, mission-driven incubators like Lunar Startups, and a globally recognized accelerator, TechStars: Farm to Fork, and more.

That’s attractive to employees, who work within walking distance of so many cultural, entertainment and outdoor attractions. With a “hip meets traditional” vibe, it’s a place defined by can-do spirit, a diverse workforce and great amenities. “It’s a place where you can work with some very talented people to make things happen—while having a good time in the process.”

For more information on regional economic development, visit GREATERMSP.org.

As a Saint Paul resident, Jasmine loves the ability to walk to a coffee shop, bar, grocery or spa within a few blocks of home. As the CEO of a data & technology business serving the creative field, she and her team know that customer experience matters—and they consider it when clients meet with them. Her company, Monicat Data, has provided strategic technical solutions and data management for the creative economy since 2016. More recently, the tech consultants have been redefining their brand and growth trajectory through the Lunar Startups incubator. Jasmine says it’s giving Monicat a new foundation through the experience of guided workshops and seminars by experts on everything from sales and pricing to scaling. What’s more, it helps being surrounded by fellow startups that have gained some market traction, are engaged in testing and are looking to scale teams, concept or impact. “It’s been a warm introduction to the work and potential Saint Paul could hold for our company in the future.”
