ARCHIPELAGO

Get the most out of the summer! THERE ARE FEW PLACES that can create the sum-

mer feeling as much as the archipelago! The best part is also that there are so many different places to visit among these magical islets and skerries, cliffs and jetties. Places that can give you different kinds of summer. Why not combine them? Activate yourself with various excursions on land by foot or by bike, on a boat or perhaps in a kayak. You are free to choose. Visit historical sites and soak in everything from Viking stories from the Middle Ages and facts from military fortresses, to more mythical places among lighthouses in the distance. IF A FAMILY GET-TOGETHER is on the agenda, there are plenty of lovely places to go ashore or stay over, swim at the beaches and sunbathe at the cliffs or barbeque under the open air. There are also places with more party vibes on either land or water. Music, dance and delight. For more privacy, if you are traveling out to the islands as a couple, there are cosy places, which are ideal for romantic moments. Many places are reached with flexible travel routes. Go by car, bus or of course by boat! But if you want to go further out into the outer archipelago, you may need a more solid plan.

THE ARCHIPELAGO FOUNDATION

Creates memories for life

With its wonderful nature and fresh air, the Stockholm archipelago is a popular place. A large part of the places and amenities offered are made possible by the Archipelago Foundation, which celebrate their anniversary this year, as they have been working to make the archipelago accessible to the public for 60 years! REGARDLESS OF HOW AND WHERE

you spend your time in the Stockholm archipelago, the Archipelago Foundation is often present in one way or another. The variety of the archipelago is unique and there is so much to discover. AVAILABLE TO EVERYONE

In the middle of nature, the Archipelago Foundation works to preserve and develop the Stockholm archipelago for the visitors, animals and the plant life. There are natural harbours and guest harbours for boating, tent sites, hiking trails and much more. Enjoy boat trips on shimmering waters, cosy overnight stays, docks and beaches as well as sauna experiences and hiking trails. 6

The Archipelago Foundation owns approximately 12 percent of the Stockholm archipelago, from Örskär in the north to Järflotta in the south. In several of the

foundation’s areas, small-scale archipelago agriculture is being operated, which contributes to a vibrant and open landscape. In the middle of the 20th century, when

many moved from their farms in the archipelago, the old cultural landscape was threatened by regrowth. The Archipelago Foundation bought some land and began to lease out farms, so that farmers could continue to run small-scale agriculture, and thus maintain an open archipelago landscape with a rich biodiversity. The Archipelago Foundation’s field staff and agricultural organisers, with their grazing animals, contribute to a beautiful cultural landscape with a rich flora and fauna. The farms, that also can be visited, are found on Finnhamn, Grinda, Hjälmö, Nämdö and Gålö. Make a visit to look at the animals and maybe peek into a farm shop for fresh vegetables and eggs. APPRECIATED WORK

The Archipelago Foundation owns

around 40 nature reserves and works with everything from the main tenance of bridges, cliffs, desalination plants, waste disposal and treatment plants to signage, supervision, environmental monitoring and much more. The foundation also owns, among other things, inns, taverns, hostels and holiday villages all run by different contractors. Everything to keep the archipelago accessible to you. If you are visiting as a tourist, we hope that you will appreciate all the wealth that the archipelago has to offer. And as a “Stockholmer” or other guardian of nature – become a supportive archipelago

friend in order to help maintain our beautiful archipelago through the work of the Archipelago Foundation. Read more at archipelagofoundation.se

M/S VINDHEM

Music, dancing and happiness at sea

If you have ever been on an M/S Vindhem cruise you are not alone. Since the middle of the eighties, more than 900,000 people have joined one of the popular archipelago cruises where shrimp, tacos and live music flow. Spring and fall are especially lively times for these cruises. M/S VINDHEM WAS ORIGINALLY

built to service the route Kalmar – Borgholm, but since the bridge was opened that same year the boat was used for different routes around the Nordic region for a few years. Subsequently, M/S Vindhem was purchased by the renowned restaurant Vindhem on Alnö Island outside Sundsvall. That is how it received its current name. When the restaurant was lost in a fire in 1987 the boat was sold to Stockholm where it is still in use. A TRULY SWEDISH EXPERIENCE

A cruise on M/S Vindhem is an excursion appreciated by all ages. Many have made it a tradition to go on one cruise every year. The boat and its two dining rooms has

room for 340 sitting passengers and attracts friend gatherings, associations, companies and families. If you are a tourist in Stockholm, going on an M/S Vindhem cruise is an excellent opportunity to experience Swedes when they are at their happiest and liveliest. – In addition to playing live music we also serve shrimp and tacos. Even those who don’t normally dance usually get captivated by the cheerful and casual atmosphere. We want all our guests to feel welcome and relaxed on our cruises. MORE MUSIC DURING SPRING AND FALL

that the scenery is ravishing also during spring and fall. Aboard M/S Vindhem, the focus is on music during the low season. – During spring and fall you get this feeling that you are all alone in the archipelago. The light makes the landscape even more beautiful. During the low season live bands will play music longer and the bands are usually more well-known. This year, the band Svenne Rubins will perform onboard on July 23. Later, during fall, other popular bands, such as, Smalare än Thord, will perform. Welcome on board!

Vacation from the first boat trip

Whether you are thinking about a day trip or want to stay a little longer, Stockholm’s archipelago traffic takes you wherever you want to go. The best part of all is that the holiday feeling comes in as soon as you step on board. WAXHOLMSBOLAGET HAS

Stockholm archipelago’s most comprehensive archipelago traffic. The popular North-South route connects the northern and southern archipelago and makes it easy to island hop, even to the islands located in the inner archipelago. During the summer, the traveler can descend on 299 different bridges. The great variation means that the holidaymaker can find exactly the destination it wants: everything from the large islands to the archipelago’s smaller, more secluded huts. Waxholmsbolaget’s website provides tips on various destinations and information about the many bridges. AN EXPERIENCE IN ITSELF

Whatever destination you choose to visit, the boat trip in itself is

enough to go out into the archipelago. The boats take you around in one of the most amazing Swedish environments, where salt-scented sea and lush islands are two main ingredients. It is a great way to discover fantastic nature and have a great holiday. If the view – against all odds – is tiring you, there is always others things on board to entertain yourself with. – To go by boat in the archipelago is a special experience and the calm reaches you as soon as you step on board. Take the opportunity to look out over the water and marvel at the various unique environments and order something good in the cafe, says Rickard Borgström, head of the section on traffic at the Traffic

Administration. Waxholmsbolaget also has three museum ships, of which two, Norrskär and Storskär, offers restaurants with food and drinks of highest class. An excellent way to enjoy the archipelago for the hungry ones! TIMETABLE IN THE APP

Timetables and departures you can find in the app ”Waxholmsbolaget”, where it’s also possible to keep track of the vessels in real time. You also find the trips on SL’s (Stockholm’s puclib transportation company) website or in the SL’s app, because Waxholmsbolaget’s boats are part of Stockholm’s public transport.

MARHOLMEN HOTEL & CONFERENCE

Marholmen – a Swedish holiday paradise Want to try out the quiet life in the archipelago, and at the same time have access to all possible activities? Then you should go to the island of Marholmen – a green oasis that offers everything you need for a fabulous holiday. WITH JUST AS FAR to Uppsala as

Stockholm lies the island of Marholmen on the Swedish east coast. The island is surrounded by the calm of the Roslagens archipelago and the fact is that its calming effect constitutes a large part of the place’s history. In the past, Marholmen was owned by a wealthy wholesaler who – thanks to his and his wife Hanna’s commitment to women’s issues – built a rest home for elaborate working women back in 1914. Shortly thereafter, a folk high school was also built. The school’s decoration has contributions from no other than Elsa Beskow, and to22

day it remains as the very popular café Grosshandlargården on the island during the summer. AT LEAST ONE ACTIVITY FOR EVERYONE

Even today, Marholmen is an oasis for those lovers of life who seek a break from everyday life. But it has also grown into a full service complex where you can tailor your holiday with as much activity as you want. If you want to unwind, you can enjoy a dip in the jacuzzi, the hot outdoor well or sit to relax in the dry or steam sauna at the SPA. If you are more interested in activating yourself, you can rent a boat, play paintball or mini golf.

The distances on Marholmen are short and walking along the footpath that goes around the whole island takes about an hour. A lovely stretch that offers many fine archipelago views, sandy beaches and hidden rocks that are perfect for taking a break to read a book. CHOOSE BETWEEN HOTEL, VILLA OR COTTAGE

Getting to Marholmen is easy as it is reached by car even though it is an island. When you get there, there are various types of accom-

modation: fifty hotel rooms where the majority have lake views, forty cabins of which four are newly renovated and cosy villas are all at your disposal. Regardless of how you choose to spend your time, you can always enjoy the pleasant restaurant and associated outdoor dining area – a gathering place that is extra popular during the summer season when barbecue buffets are served. In other words, everyone can find their favourite spot on Marholmen. It’s suitable for a group of friends or a couple as well as for the family with children and the bachelorette. Welcome to a magical place!

ÖREGRUND

Bath-friendly wooden town with cultural heritage

With a location around a naturally deep bay, Öregrund is made to be a bathing paradise. Along with cultural attractions and sunsets that meet the ocean, this place has something for everyone. TWENTY KILOMETERS NORTH-EAST

of Östhammar is Öregrund, one of Sweden’s best preserved wooden towns. Here you find the outdoor park Tallparken that offers everything that can be desired for a wonderful holiday including walking paths, benches with a view, tennis courts and a popular bathing site. The fact that the bathing area is well-liked isn’t a problem – there is plenty of space in the area. The scenic bathing area has been listed by a Swedish magazine as one of the country’s 21 best beaches, but the site also offers cliffs. – If you go to Öregrund I recommend a visit to Tallparksbadet. It offers lovely cliffs that you can jump from and it has an incredibly beautiful view of the Roslagen, says visitor Lotta from Västerås. NATURE AND HISTORICAL BUILDINGS

For those who don’t enjoy swim-

ming, there are several other activities to participate in. One is to visit the cultural attractions around the area, such as the beautiful stone church from the 1490s, the maritime museum or the old town hall from the 19th century. In the old town hall lies the council hall, where you can stroll around at art exhibitions during summer time. In the summer, there are plenty of events and parties in Öregrund in general. The boat week, Roslags loppet with the finish line in Öre grund and “Öregrund Monday’s” with music at the lightship Västra Banken are just some of the recurring events. If you’re interested in tennis, a local tennis week has been going on since 1935.

ful idyll, but when you see what kind of fantastic sunsets this picturesque place offers, it’s even difficult to believe your eyes. In fact, Öregrund is the only city along the east coast of Sweden where you can see the sun go down into the ocean. Is there a better way to end the day?

SPECTACULAR SUNSETS

A typical day in Öregrund consists of walks around the city’s small alleys and streets, enjoying local delicacies and shopping. It’s no doubt that Öregrund is a delight-

MORE THAN STRIPES AND NAVY BLUE

Marine fashion The lovely atmosphere found at wonderfully saltsprinkled places symbolises a healthy and fresh lifestyle, something that we like to match with the garments we wear. The marine fashion – with, among other things, sailing clothes that are both functional and stylish – grows larger every year. We love it!

PELLE P

The brand to be seen – but that leaves small ecological footprints

The philosophy behind the clothing brand Pelle P has since its establishment taken care of the nature and the environment. Their range includes functional clothing for both athletes and practical everyday clothes for an active lifestyle. – FOR THE ONE who’s been practicing sports such as sailing, downhill skiing and golf almost all his or her life knows the importance of nature and respects it. It’s in that awareness that Pelle P originates, says the founder and designer Cecilia Petterson. Pelle P is a clothing brand in the premium segment, which is reflected in function, design and quality with a focus on materials and manufacturing. Therefore, you can be confident that the garments are of high quality concerning all details – and that your clothes are made for a long life cycle.

tion is central and every detail is carefully planned. – We believe that those who train and compete in functional clothes that they can rely on, and that also fulfill their high demands, perform better and wants to use the garments for a long period of time, says Cecilia. When the function of the clothes allows, natural materials such as cotton, wool and linen are used. These materials are found in, among other things, their shirts, pants and sweaters. function and look good for a long time. A large part of their range is created according to slow fashion – when quality goes beyond quantity, where fewer and more elaborate garments are prioritized with sustainable production and minimal negative environmental impact. – With a clean and timeless design, which at the same time follows the trends to some extent, we create garments that the users can enjoy for a long time. Our care for details, down to each individual seam and zipper, also contributes to a jacket not feeling outdated after a season, concludes Cecilia. Read more at pellepettersson.se 39

GRINDA

An archipelago idyll for all tastes One of the most accessible places in the archipelago is scenic Grinda. The delightful island offers a versatility that suits many different needs. Something unique about the environment is that Grinda is a nature reserve, which means that you can move around freely in nature – without limitations.

48

Grinda Wärdhus offers three food concepts that suit everyone based on what you can afford and would like to eat. Visit the café adjacent to the farmshop, luxuriate in the tavern or try their sea pub with simpler dishes.

YOU WILL FIND GRINDA at northern

OPEN VIVID LANDSCAPE

Värmdö and just south of Södra Ljusterö, and it’s no wonder that it is one of the archipelago’s most popular tourist destinations. You can feel the welcoming atmosphere no matter what you wish to explore. Visit over the day, rent a summer cottage or experience the island for a longer period of time. Why not set up a tent at the campsite? There’re also opportunities to take in at a hostel or hotel for a more convenient stay. Grinda offers intense and vibrant summer summit as well as adventure opportunities, but also a greater calm during spring and early autumn. Many people appreciate just how easy and fast it is to get here. – Many travellers in the archipelago enjoys the recognition at Grinda. They like to know that the place, and also the menus, offers what they are used to. We’ve a lot of regulars who visits a couple of times a year. But we’ve also managed to create a slightly more continental atmosphere so that even foreign visitors feel welcome, says Jan Pfister who’s been running Grinda Wärdshus since 1996.

Whole Grinda is a nature reserve where there’s agriculture and animal farming as prerequisites for the landscape to be kept open and vidid. Grinda Gård, which is rented by Marias Jörgensson from the Archipelago Foundation, is also a nice excursion destination that provides increased knowledge about animals and nature as well as a contribution to make the consumer more aware of animal husbandry. The animals are put in first place and the meat sold in the farm shop comes from happy and prosperous animals. Jan explains that onwards, they want to work even closer with the farmer to develop several concepts together. – The vision is to create even more day activities and opportu-

nities for overnight stays, during the summer as well as late autumn and winter. We always want to remind you to take the opportunity to enjoy the archipelago in the spring and early summer. There’s something special when the ice releases and the birds come back and it creates a completely different feeling. EXPERIENCE GRINDA ALL YEAR ROUND

At Grinda they try to enhance the different seasons. If you come during different times of the year, it should feel like a new visit every time. – Every season has its specific semblance in the archipelago, and we try to adapt to offer different foods and activities during the year.

RINDÖ

Outside Vaxholm you will find beautiful Rindö. The small island stretches 5 km long and 1.2 km wide and is an oasis close to the city. Enjoy both wonderful surroundings and the exciting history. RINDÖ HAS PREVIOUSLY been an important place from a defencehistorical point of view and fortifications have existed since Gustav Vasa’s time. Many also remember the place where their general military service took place. But before the military arrived, a spa hotel was established in the 1880s, where, among other things, hot and cold baths were offered. They even procured a small steampowered vessel to transport the visitors from Vaxholm. Unfortunately, the main building burned down in the early 1900s – but even today one can see the hotel remains in the mountain. Now the history is mixed and given new life, where the military becomes less prominent and where recreation focus resumes more and more. NEW RESIDENCES BRINGS NEW LIFE

The island has in recent years been given an extra boost because of 52

new built residences. When the last parts of Vaxholm’s coastal artillery moved out in 2005, the barrack buildings were empty for a few years, until they were converted into condominiums. Hereafter a restaurant, brewery and a bakery have been established. A hidden little gem is also the Ostmakeriet café. Popular places for both visitors and residents. The well-visited restaurant Batteriet Orangeri & Kök is also worth a visit, with its location right next to the harbour, overlooking Solöfjärden. They also have a cosy little deli shop and an orangery where you can shop plants, organic skin care and other things from local businesses. The heart of the island, that creates the wonderful archipelago feeling, is clearly the harbour, where apartments is being built, for everyday life and movement, next to the sea, all year round.

On the east side of Rindö you will find the defence structures Byviksfortet and Oskar-Fredriksborg’s fortification.

Rindö is a small relaxation paradise that brings vacation feelings. There is both a newly built bathing pier and a small beach. There are also opportunities for activities such as kayaking, playing tennis or exercising at the gym, either outside or inside. The outdoor company Brygghuset, which has its business and shop at the harbour, arranges group paddles and guided tours, as well as renting kayaks and equipment. If you rather like to go around on your own, you can just stroll and unwind along the promenades in nature and among several outdoor areas. If you want to stay overnight there is, among other things, Fredriksborg Hotel, which provides a lovely home-feel, and a wonderful view of Oxdjupet and a Bed & Breakfast, built in the renovated old military hospital.

BULLERÖ

Cosy outer archipelago with beautiful views A quick visit ”A thousand island cruise” with M/S Waxholm III visits Bullerö with the route Stockholm-Kymmendö-Bullerö-SandhamnVaxholm-Stockholm. Here you will get guided tours, can enjoy good food and Bullerön is one of the stops.

Imagine views so beautiful that artists have depicted them. The Bullerö archipelago is such a place, situated at the far end of the sea band outside Nämdö. Bullerön was bought by the artist Bruno Liljefors in 1908, and in the hunting lodge he built, he created a summer paradise for himself and his family. BUT ALSO BRUNO’S artist friends such as Anders Zorn, Albert Engström and Axel Sjöberg came to visit, and among other things, to depict the archipelago environ ment. In 1923, the financier Torsten Kreuger bought the island and the hunting lodge was enlarged. Bullerön with its surrounding islands was finally bought by the

state in 1967 and today the nature reserve is managed by the Archi pelago Foundation – and the hunting lodge itself is a museum. FOREST AND BARREN LANDSCAPES

Among the 900 islands, islets and skerries with intermediate fjords, there is versatility with everything from beautiful experiences in the

nature reserves to exciting cultural history. The buildings on Bullerön are located inside Hemmaviken, and are very well preserved. At the docks one meets red-painted sea sheds. Nature consists of forest in the west and of a more rugged landscape in the east. Here you can find several trails to wander to get a complete experience with beautiful viewpoints. STAY OVER AT BULLERÖN

PHOTO: NATURKARTAN.SE

There is also a sauna with sea views available to the public at Bullerön.

If not only a day trip attracts, there are several overnight accommodations, either in the hostel, by putting up your own tent or staying in a cottage. HOW TO GET HERE At Bullerön there are nice natural harbours where you can lay your own boat. Otherwise, there is a boat which operates Stockholm > Stavsnäs > Bullerön from June 24 until August 18. Stavsnäs boat taxi can also be booked. 55

Your adventure begins on board Escape from the city for a moment and treat yourself to an exciting trip in the archipelago. VAXHOLM FORTRESS

Adventure, art and culture – in a historical environment

Fun activities for all ages, the archipelago’s largest museum and a historic site that is well worth discovering from both inside and outside. This year Vaxholm Fortress also has a new addition – lively and colourful art. INSIDE THE FORTRESS WALLS,

a new tenant will take place. The artist and the former local Vaxholm profile, Lena Linderholm. – Lena will open a shop and gallery with us this summer, from May 18th. Here you can buy and watch art and ceramics during your visit, says the site manager Egon Persson. Many people appreciate a visit only to see the building and sense the wing of history. Get to the top of the tower, and after 130 steps you can enjoy the well-known view. On a clear day you can catch a glimpse of both Hammarbybacken and the Ericsson Globe. The venturous can also try out the ”Walk the plank” attraction. Instead of walking down, you can make a more adrenalin-filled journey by jumping 18 meters! ACTIVITIES AMONG THE WINGS OF HISTORY

Vaxholm Fortress offers different kinds of adventures. The prisoners

at the Fortress are suitable for both families and different corporate groups and it’s also possible to set off on a trip with a RIB boat. During the year, they arrange for example Children’s Day, a exhibition about the commercial pirate radio station Radio Nord and an art and history talk. The castle’s museum is also the largest of the archipelago with its three floors. For 80 SEK you get

great value for the money and you can feel the past within the walls. – Although it’s the archipelago’s largest museum, some visitors are still surprised that it’s so big. There’s a lot to look at and an affordable experience, says Egon. Since last year there’s also a cosy café down by the guest harbour. Here you’re served homemade bread, waffles and you can take a break overlooking the water.

TO GET HERE The oasis Vaxholm is closer to Stockholm city than you might think. Go here by car, bus or boat. The castle is just over a minute from the Vaxholm dock and is reached via the line ferry, which departs every fifteen minutes from morning to evening. The trip costs 50 SEK for adults. For children and youths it’s free. During high season, there’s also a direct ferry from Nybrokajen in Stockholm. 57

According to Björn, architect Johan Nyrén should have ended up in Guinness Book of Records for his work. This building only took 70 days to draw – which is almost a miracle!

ARTIPELAG

A tribute to the archipelago Just over seven years ago, the cultural venue Artipelag opened. Situated in a beautiful archipelago environment and in a place where nature meets art in an exceptional way. IT WAS THE FOUNDERS and entre

preneurs Björn and Lillemor Jakobson’s art interest, combined with a love for the archipelago, that put the idea on the map. From the beginning, there was only glittering water and a rock face. The requirement that the architect Johan Nyrén got was that when you walk down the road, you would only catch a glimpse of Baggensfjärden. When you later enter through the entrance, you would feel – wow! A NATURAL SYMBIOSIS

The vision was to create a building in close harmony with nature. A building that looks like it is growing out of the landscape. Nature would, to the extent possible, be left untouched. Among other things, a rocky knoll was left, 58

which is preserved and incorporated within the museum. – The interior should reflect the exterior, which is evident in the grooves from the wooden construction in the concrete, and the large open windows. Nature will owerflow the room, which it does in a beautiful and seamless way, says Gustav Idhammar, press officer. The site of 22 hectares also contributes to the experience. Stroll around and enjoy diverse surroundings during all seasons. The easily accessible beach promenade down by the water has also become an attraction in itself. MEANINGFUL EXPERIENCES

In addition to a visually innovative building, at least equally impressive exhibitions are given here, both

inside and outside. Here you get to take part in exciting art, design, craftsmanship and things that exist in the borderland between different disciplines. A variety that has led to great success. The highlight of the summer and this year is the exhibition FORNASETTI Inside Out Outside In, which presents the designer Piero Fornasetti’s multifaceted compositions and broad spectrum. In the surrounding nature there is a sculpture exhibition that includes the Solar Egg, a golden sauna egg, in stainless steel mirrors, created by the duo Bigert & Bergström. As if everything above was not enough, the food is in a league of its own. A creative and ambitious kitchen, acclaimed from several sources for its quality, flavors and

appearance. The pastries are sometimes visual works of art in themselves. – Artipelag is a place with art, culture, exciting activities, good food and inviolated archipelago nature, says Björn Jakob son during a presentation of the idea behind Artipelag.

The building is breathing environmental thinking and fragrant architecture. The facades are tarred, sedum plants are placed on the roofs and the house is both heated and cooled down by pumps from the bay.

CLOSER THAN YOU THINK

By car or direct bus, Värmdö and Artipelag can be reached in just 25 minutes from central Stockholm. But if you have the time, a scenic boat trip from Nybrokajen with Strömma Kanalbolaget’s ships is recommended. If you have the luxury of having your own boat, there is a free guest pier.

In Commemoration of the 300th Anniversary of the Russian Pillage of 1719

In 2019, it is exactly 300 years ago since the Russian pillage of the eastern coast of Sweden. During the summer of 1719 the Russian fleet ravaged the coastline – from Gävle in the north to Norrköping in the south. These events will be highlighted through activities in local museums and historical societies in the archipelago of Stockholm during the summer of 2019. For more information and upcoming events, please visit our website or Facebook! www.ryssharjningarna.se | www.facebook.com/ryssharjningarna 59

DJURÖNÄSET

The destination for relaxation & entertainment

GOT YOUR OWN BOAT? USE THE GUEST DOCK THAT RECENTLY HAD UPDATED CAPACITY!

A main temptation to visit Djurönäset is the scenic environment. Only a 30 minutes drive from Stockholm, you will find the archipelago destination that delivers – regardless of the season. Varied archipelago weekends are offered all year round, but lots of other things happen. This year they present the largest set of concerts and events than ever before. THE SPA EXPERIENCES are some thing that the guests usually come here for throughout the year. Enjoy their infinity-inspired outdoor hot spring along with the magical views. – We also have an indoor swimming pool, with an adjoining dock, with lots of relaxation chairs where you can sit and enjoy nice music and rippling water overlooking the archipelago, says Mats Alderbrant, Sales and Marketing Manager. You can also try out their several saunas, the wood-fueled outdoor 60

sauna, a classic steam sauna or the sanarium with a lower temperature. And don’t miss the experience showers! Stand under a waterfall with soothing water at only a few degrees, or try the shower with different combinations of both scents and lights. An appreciated concept is their feel good-weekends that they arrange once a month. – It’s been a success and we have a solid program with, among other things, zumba, yoga, meditation and outdoor training. It’s also

unique that you can practice yoga on our indoor dock. ARCHIPELAGO AMUSEMENT HUB

In addition to several spa visitors, Djurönäset has conferences, various family packages and a lot of events. Every Tuesday and Thursday this summer there will be live music on the guest dock along with a barbecue buffet. – We will also arrange After Sail in our park, where we’ve gathered more or less the best cover bands in Sweden, including Duo Jag and

Bad Influens. We’re repeating last year’s 80s party with Noise, Lili & Susie, Suzzie Tapper and Herreys – and we’re very happy that Bo Kaspers’ Orchestra has chosen to do their only gig south of Skellefteå here at Djurönäset. For the eighth year in a row, the Archipelago Festival will also take place on July 6, with free admission, and lots of performances for all ages. – We’ve put together a large range of activities such as RIB

boat, helicopter flight, sailboat testing, laser trap shooting and other things. For the children there are also bouncy castles, face painting and more. A really great archipelago day! No matter what you’re looking for, this archipelago’s entertainment hub offers a mix of relaxation, good food, spa and music experiences. Read more at djuronaset.com

GLASHUSET

On your way to one of the archipelago islands, or just craving a relaxing environment along Strandvägen? Glashuset at Kajplats 18 is inevitably a place in the middle of Stockholm’s most prestigious tourist path. Whether you walk past aimlessly or have the place as your destination, you will end up at the right place! DISCOVER THE OASIS where you can escape the city life to enjoy the archipelago atmosphere and relaxing views. Christos Neo, one of the owners, explains that he fell in love with the location when he took over the business together with Sussie Leuhusen last spring. – It’s not possible to describe the energy that overwhelms you when you get here. It’s so beautiful both day and night – and especially during the summer. The idea is that it should be a natural meeting place, a glass house and an oasis, an orangery – or rather a destina tion that you can visit all year round. Experience sailing as it was in the 19th century

Have you always dreamed of sailing yourself, but have no prior knowledge? Or are you just looking to discover the Stockholm archipelago in a new way? Whichever, a sailing with the Brig Tre Kronor is something you shouldn’t miss. BRIGGEN TRE KRONOR offers a variety of sailing with the ambition to give its guests an experience in the Stockholm archipelago beyond the ordinary. By allowing the guests themselves to participate actively, everyone on board becomes part of the same adventure. No prior knowledge is required as the crew helps you during the trip. Participation, however, is voluntarily and if you just want to enjoy the sailing and beautiful views that’s great too. The vessel sailing is called Three Crowns of Stockholm and has several awards from The Tall Ships Races, an international sea-race for sailing ships and large sailboats that have been organized ever since 1956. Three Crowns is in other words

an excellent sailor that is easy to maneuver despite its size. MANY DIFFERENT TOURS TO CHOOSE FROM

Deciding to sail on Tre Kronor is easy, but choosing which of all tours is more difficult - everything from family sailing in three hours, lunch, evening and dinner cruises in four hours and holiday sailing is offered. If you are more adventurous than that, there are also long sailing trips. Regardless if you’re going on a short or long trip, it’s going to be pleasant. The archipelago’s beautiful islands provide sheltered water that prevents heavy waves from interfering with the sailing. Because after all, getting sea sick

is something most of us visitors want to avoid, in favor to enjoy the fabulous surroundings and to be able to have a pleasant experience. LIKE SAILING IN THE 19TH CENTURY

As if it was not enough to sail a well-built vessel in a stunning environment, the award-winning ship also offers another experience: a historic journey. The style of the vessel represents a ship from the end of the 19th century and the craft is carried out by real-time shipbuilders. Every detail is carefully thought out and together with a complete restaurant kitchen and a professional chef there is nothing that will make you want to return to land again! Grisslehamn

Guest harbours A guest harbour offers temporary berths for visiting guests with leisure boats and the boat site is provided for a fee. There are about 500 guest harbours in Sweden and a guest marina must meet certain requirements, which means that there must be at least ten berths, drinking water, some form of kiosk or shop, boat fuel, some where to dispose waste, toilet, shower or sauna with hot water and an emergency phone.

Marirefred

THE NORTHERN ARCHIPELAGO – GMSS GUEST HARBOUR IN GRISSLEHAMN

SOUTHERN ARCHIPELAGO – NYNÄSHAMN’S GUEST HARBOUR

The guest harbour in Grisslehamn lies at the bottom of the western harbour where you can add as one day or overnight guest. The 25 guest places are located right next to Ångbåtsbryggan where the restaurant with the same name also is located. Here you will find electricity, restroom, showers and an art center.

With more than 300 berths, Nynäshamn’s guest harbour is one of the east coast’s largest, and also situated in the heart of the city. The guest places are well protected within northern Europe’s largest floating breakwater and Nynäshamn’s center and station are only a stone’s throw away. Here you can find all kinds of service!

MIDDLE ARCHIPELAGO – LÅNGVIKS GÄSTHAMN ON MÖJA

The guest harbour at Möja is located in the small, genuine fishing harbour on the island’s northeastern side. The guest places are located at the long jetty on the west side of the bay. Here you will find showers, restroom, fresh water, fuel and food in both the shop and the restaurant. A lovely oasis sheltered from southern, eastern and western winds. 88

MÄLAREN – MARIEFREDS MARINA

From May to September, the guest harbour in the middle of Mälaren is open for business. Mariefreds Marina was renovated two years ago and the service house now has shining showers and fresh amenities in general. There are 50 guest harbour places and a large service range. The motto is described as service with a large S.

Natural harbours

Norrpada

THE NORTHERN ARCHIPELAGO – NORRPADA

The Norrpada archipelago consists of around 30 uninhabited islands and is located in Norrtälje municipality. Here you will fins several unusually well-protected natural harbours and shorelines. The archipelago distinguishes itself with resident cliffs, shallow slopes and round cliffs – interrupted by rough, low-lying shrubs. Many boat owners returns, year after year. THE MIDDLE ARCHIPELAGO – JUNGFRUSKÄR, GRÖNSKÄRSFLADEN

You will find Grönskärsfladen next to Jungfruskär, which is located south of Nämdö. Note that it can be windy from the west – but otherwise this is a lovely place to enjoy the evening sun on quieter days. Dry toilets and garbage sheds can be found in several places around Grönskärsfladen.

Not many things beat the feeling to wake up in a beautiful and carefully selected natural harbour! These harbours are located in protected areas; require no fees and usually no service is available. But the greater gets the chance of extra privacy. In some places, on the other hand, there are both outdoor toilets and trash bins. THE SOUTHERN ARCHIPELAGO – ÖSTERMARSFLADEN, NÅTTARÖ

Östermarsfladen is located on the north side of the nature reserve Nåttarö. There are two docks where you can lie at anchors. Many berths are available, but it can still be a little crowded during the high season. There are also fine sandy beaches and a kiosk nearby. THE ARCHIPELAGO AT MÄLAREN – DÄVENSÖ, VRAKVIKEN

The natural harbour Dävensö, also called Vrakviken, is a beautiful place where you can moor near the cliffs. There is a rich wildlife here and it is quiet and secluded for the ones that highly desire it. One thing to consider is that the rocks are steep and can be difficult to get up at.

Close to everything – the cliffs, Whether you live in Haninge or come to visit, Haninge is a place for those who love the archipelago. Enjoy the ocean and salty winds, water sports, fishing and swimming. Or how about nature experiences and discoveries in forests and land that attract you to the wilderness’s magical atmosphere?

IT TAKES NO MORE THAN half an hour to Haninge from Stockholm. Go by car, commuter train, bus or boat. In the summer you can also take the boat from Strömkajen in Stockholm directly out to the Haninge archipelago. Here we give you some of the fantastic places to visit! UTÖ –POPULAR ALL YEAR ROUND

Utö is one of the most popular excursion destinations in Stockholm’s southern archipelago – all year round. Visit one of Haninge’s many archipelago islands filled with long sandy beaches, vibrant nature, activities and adventures. DALARÖ – THE GATE TO PARADISE

Many of us fall in love with Dalarö, 92

the customs society that became a seaside resort. One of the summer guests, August Strindberg, coined the concept of ”the gateway to paradise”. Today you stroll around the charming little shops and enjoy the tranquillity. You can easily feel the wings of history, and for your inner vision see Anders Zorn’s fancy people stroll around – with parasols and high hats. GÅLÖ – A PIECE OF SWEDISH MILITARY HISTORY

Gålö is another gem that is rightly called ”Stockholm’s garden”. There are nature reserves and over three miles of hiking trails. Grazing beach meadows, oak forestes and pine forests. Plenty of bird life, berries, mushrooms, game,

NÅTTARÖ

Live the simple life at Nåttarö If you want to experience the true Swedish summer then you should head to Nåttarö. Here, life is both simple, peaceful and enjoyable – all that is needed to relax during some beautiful summer days. GETTING TO NÅTTARÖ is smooth.

No car is needed, as you can go locally to Nynäshamn which is only one hour away from Stockholm city. At Nynäshamn you can easily take the ferry over to the island. Once you arrive, you will be well taken care of by the Ljung family, who run most of the activities on the island. Service is something that characterizes the Ljung family. Since they took over the lease

of the holiday village, the hostel and the restaurant in 2016, they’ve worked hard to give more people the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful surroundings of Nåttarö. And you can surely say that they’ve succeeded. Every year more people are visiting. But since the island is a full five hundred and seventy hectares large, there is plenty of room for everyone. The harbour right by the steamboat pier takes

twenty-five boats and the fantastic natural harbour up to several hundred. A SAND ISLAND WITH ROOM FOR EVERYONE

When you finally arrive at Nåttarö, just inhale the atmosphereThe whole island, which is a nature reserve, is made of sand. There fore, it also has many hidden sandy beaches where it is easy to find your own hideout. Here, visitors can go barefoot on the grass, read a book, paddle kayak or rent a bike. In addition to all the sandy beaches, there is a place that is very popular on the island for both children and adults: the football field. Here, the simple life becomes most evident, when generations are mixed up laughing together. Those who don’t want to play gather on blankets around the field, chatting and watching. STAY IN THE HOLIDAY VILLAGE OR HOSTEL

The idyllic cottage village is placed right next to the restaurant and consists of fifty cottages containing two to six beds each. Beyond the holiday village there is also a hostel with thirty-two beds, excellent for a large group to rest, cook and just hang out. Evening hours, many visitors choose to gather at the restaurant and cottage village, which is the heart of the island. Here it’s often cheerful and lively – but in a relaxed manner. Live bands play on the weekends at the restaurant where the sunset is most dazzling, with the beach just below. If you want to experience the true Swedish summer, then you should head out to Nåttarö. You will be well taken care of by the Ljung family, who run most of the activities on the island. 94

LANDSORT

Sweden’s oldest lighthouse and a rich wildlife The fact that Landsort island is a nature reserve is easy to understand. Even though it is most known for its lighthouse, the nature and the animal life is both rare and eyecatching. LANDSORT IS THE NAME OF

Sweden’s oldest lighthouse and the southernmost outpost of Stockholm’s archipelago. Somehow, over time it has also become synonymous with the whole island, which is actually called Öja. But the island has more to offer than the lighthouse known from the 17th century. On the island’s southern cape you enjoy a walk in a distinctive archipelago. With its rugged cliffs and lush vegetation, the island is known for having a unique plant environment that separates from the remaining islands in the Stockholm archipelago. Here you can explore aquatic plants, unusual orchids and botanical rarities such as white oxel, field berries and yew trees. BIRD MARKING AND SEAL SAFARI

It’s not only flora that distinguishes the island. Landsort has, ever since the island was discovered by ornithologies in the late 1940s, been known for its bird-life. Even

today, the island’s bird life is unusually rich and there is even a bird station where you can learn about ringing and the migration of the Swedish birds. Anyone who is interested in a little larger creature can always enjoy themselves with another animal-related activity: looking for seals. There are plenty of seals around the island, especially around the outermost inclines. The most common place to catch a glimpse of the adorable swimmers is at the Yttre Karvasen.

DEFENSE FACILITY FROM THE COLD WAR

If you have managed to land on Landsort without liking neither animals nor nature, fortunately there are other sights to investigate. One of them is the exciting visitor destination Battery Landsort. Here you can get a guided tour of an underground defense facility from the Cold War which is now a museum. Other places worth visiting are the chapel, the pest cemetery and the coastal labyrinth. Or why not check out this year’s cultural exhibition that is exhibited around the island with the sea as a background – a perfect way to discover the island. Read more at landsort.com 97

Lots of experiences in ”The World of Culture Islands” Only half an hour from Stockholm city, you will find Ekerö municipality, consisting of the beautiful Mälar Islands. Here you can find tourist destinations and oases to discover – whether you are looking for cultural history, recreation or more swift adventures. ONE OF THE MOST well-known destinations is Drottningholm Castle on Lovö, which is one of Ekerö’s two world heritage sites. The castle is the first view you are welcomed by when you arrive via Nockeby Bridge. Instead, if you want to experience scenic areas at the waterway as part of your visit, then it’s always nice to go here with a boat trip on Lake Mälaren, departing from Stadshusbron in Stockholm’s inner city. FRENCH INFLUENCES AND CHINESE PAVILION

Drottningholm Castle is Sweden’s best preserved royal castle and was built in the 17th century. Since 110

1981, it’s also Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia’s official residence. The area is a popular recreation area for royalty as well as tourists. The castle was built by architect Nicodemus Tessin the elder, on behalf of Queen Hedvig Elonora. As inspiration there are influences from the French 17th and 18th century castles and in the surroundings around the castle you will find cosy gardens. An exclusive French baroque park also parades here, which has been preserved to a considerable extent. A lovely place to stroll around and with an international class that fascinates the visitors. There’s also a castle

theater and the gazebo Chinese Pavilion – which contains a hidden and colourful treasure that must be visited. Don’t forget the upper floor! Another castle on Ekerö is Svartsjö Castle, with its associated park – around a neighborhood where people have lived and worked since the Iron Age. Overindulge desserts at their cake café, enjoy an afternoon tea during the fall and spring or take a walk in the culturalhistorical park which is open all year round. VIKINGS, HIKING TRAILS AND MEDIEVAL CHURCHES

World heritage number two on

PHOTO: UDO SCHRÖTER

Ekerö is Birka Hovgården – a place where pristine surroundings visualize the exciting Viking era in a unique and time-typical way. A popular destination with varied experiences. Ekerö also offers many nice hiking trails where you can head for both certified trails or among lovely nature reserves. The flour nature has a lot of versatility to show off and contains both interesting vegetation and a rich animal life. In addition, Ekerö has eight churches from the 100s, where two of the most visited are Rundtornskyrkan on Munsö and Hilleshög’s church located on Färingsö. Read more at ekero.se

To get here Ekerö is located just outside Stockholm city, and it is easy to get here by boat, car or bus.

BIRKA EXPERIENCE BIRKA AND THE VIKING AGE FROM MAY 4 TO SEPTEMBER 22!

An unforgettable overall experience in ”Sweden’s first city” Welcome to the unique little island in Lake Mälaren – with pristine surroundings and lots of well-preserved history. Here you will get a wonderful experience and insights about the Vikings’ trading place, which was built on Björkö during the 700s. THE INTEREST IN THE VIKING AGE is huge around the world and popular Birka attracts more and more visitors every year. Lately, they’ve also noticed another type of visitor. – Previously, it was mainly families with children and couples in their 50s, but now more and more young people are arriving as a group of friends or as couples and they are often very well-informed, says Veronica Björkman, Business Manager.

Many who visit Birka are surprised of how advanced the society was. And that the Vikings weren’t the barbaric savages that they often get portrayed as. Only a fraction were warriors, while the rest were peasants, craftsmen and traders. – Here you will get a greater understanding of, among other things, their social systems and how their clothes looked. There is a notion that they ran around in 112

sackcloth and fur, but the clothes were often made of colourful silk. The Vikings were vain, clean and careful to comb their hair, giving a completely different picture. The unique parts about Birka are best experienced through a guided tour, so that you can understand even the not visible. With the guide’s words along the way, you get a greater connection to the landscape and a more visual image of what was actually going on here once upon a time. A LOT TO EXPERIENCE

One experience that usually gives the first-time visitor a wow-factor is the burial mounds. Veronica says that when you stand there and see all 5,000 graves that they’ve put lots of effort in, you will be impressed. It’s difficult to choose what is most popular. To see Viking boats and how the Viking houses looked is something that many

look forward to. Activities such as Children’s Birka and Children’s Archaeology are also organized. The period Vikings at Birka is also a popular feature as it lives Vikings in the Birka quarter that also hangs out among the guests and showcase typical crafts. Also their Viking inspired Restaurant Särimner attracts. – This year we’ll also become KRAV-certified. We have worked hard for the environment and focused on sustainability. We will, among other things, continue with our Norse culture where the crop that we grow is used in the food served. For those who can get here with their own boat, our Wild Boar Guild is also arranged every Saturday in July. Then, full-grilled wild boar is on the menu in collaboration with Peter Vilidu and barbecue master Claes Rydberg.

Go here with Strömmas boats that depart from Klara Mälarstrand in central Stockholm, Mariefred, Södertälje, Härjarö or Hovgården on Adelsö. You can also go on the steamship Ejdern from Södertälje or Rederi Mälarstaden from Västerås. If you arrive with your own boat, there are plenty of spots in the guest harbour.

– Furthermore, it’s not possible not to mention the fantastic environment and beautiful nature. It’s so peaceful and you can stroll around, look at the view from the Castle Mountain and just enjoy the nature and ancient area.

SKOKLOSTER’S CASTLE

Attend a historic castle ball Are you interested in Swedish history, beautiful objects and outstanding surroundings? Then you should head to Skokloster’s Castle - Sweden’s best preserved castle. NORTH OF STOCKHOLM next to

Lake Mälaren is an attraction that must not be missed, especially if you’re interested in history. The attraction is Skokloster’s castle, a palace with a grand atmosphere that makes it possible to step into some of Sweden’s history. Behind the detailed façade, you will find one of northern Europe’s most well-preserved baroque environments. With its magnificent floors, 77 rooms and a full 50,000 objects from the 17th century onwards, the castle is a paradise for curious tourists. If you get tired you can always have a coffee break and a waffle in the castles café. The combination of activities and rest makes Skokloster’s castle a perfect place for an excursion! OVER 350 YEARS OLD

The castle is the largest private palace ever built in Sweden. It was the Count and Field Marshal Carl Gustaf Wrangel who built the castle on the country estate where he was born. The location, right on the sea route between Stockholm 114

and Uppsala, was perfect for anyone who wanted to impress people with a sumptuous palace. When Wrangel passed away in 1676, the castle was not completed. Even the craftsmen’s tools remain in the banquet hall today, which has given the salon the name Unfinished Salon. Today it is over 350 years since Wrangler’s death, but the castle remains more vivid than ever. BALL, TOUR GAMES AND NATIONAL DAY CELEBRATIONS

In the summer, a very popular

event that plays in harmony with the castle’s historical grounds is occurring: the Empirical Ball. On the ball, you return to a magical evening in the 1800s. Another event in historic spirit is the traditional knights games, which is held in late July. Aside from the mentioned events, it may also be worth checking out the national day celebration or the recurring yoga weekend. Both arrangements are popular - but in very different ways. On the yoga weekend, tourists often come to seek peace and quiet

and to enjoy the beautiful surroundings of the castle, while on the National Day, several thousand people gather in the castle! Both Swedes and foreign tourists appreciate the magical excursion

the castle is, which is definitely worth a visit. Something else worth a visit, that’s only a stone’s throw away, is the old church. The church is part of the old monastery that existed here during the 13th cen-

tury, which also gave Skokloster’s castle its name, and is therefore something many people want to see during their stay. Read more at skoklostersslott.se
