Welcome to the

ARCHIPELAGO

Stockholm’s archipelago consists of more than 30 000 islands and thanks to The Archipelago Foundation a large number of them are accessible Text.... to the public. In the pages to come you can read about their mission, and how they work behind the scenes in order to ensure the accessibility of the archipelago today and in the future.

In the next few pages we will tell you about some of the ways in which you can experience the archipelago. It doesn’t have to be neither complicated nor expensive. Perhaps all you need is a SL-smart card, a tent and a sleeping bag? Because in Sweden the law of common access makes it possible.

In the northern archipelago there is wonderful nature and an environment that has been influenced by the trade between Sweden and Åland. In the middle archipelago there are both vibrant islands with restaurants and nightlife, calm creeks and a divine outer archipelago. Stockholm’s southern archipelago is more barren and the part of the island world that looks the most like the Swedish west coast.

If you are a Swedish native chances are that you know the basics of the law of common access. But if you are from a different country you will probably find it interesting to read about what it means and what rights and obligations it entails. Keep reading!

Preservation of nature and culture Are you on a boat on your way out to the archipelago right now, or are you planning a visit? In that case there is a good chance that you will come into contact with The Archipelago Foundation in one way or another.

T

he Archipelago Foundation was founded in 1959 in order to safeguard public access to the archipelago. Today the foundation still works for your right to experience a free and accessible archipelago and to preserve it for future generations. The foundation owns and administers about 12 percent of the land in Stockholm’s archipelago, distributed from Örskär in the north to Landsort in the south. The Archipelago Foundation is 6

responsible for everything from emptying garbage containers and nature preservation to making long-term strategies for the development of land and buildings. Unique buildings – cultural heritage The archipelago Foundation owns and administers an excess of 3000 buildings in the archipelago. There is a wide range of buildings where some date back to the 1700s and others are recently built. The foundation

owns everything from windmills, lighthouses and cottages to modern youth hostels. A significant number of the buildings are an important part of the cultural heritage. Preserves nature and culture Another important responsibility of the foundation is to preserve the archipelago’s nature- and culture treasures. It cares for 40 nature preserves, maintains cultural buildings such as windmills and farms and make sure

that the old farm landscape says open via grazing animals and traditional farming methods. Visitors The Archipelago Foundation creates conditions for tourism and outdoor life by subletting buildings to entrepreneurs that in turn run youth hostels, campsites,

restaurants and guest harbors. It keeps the archipelago alive by creating jobs and by making it possible for entrepreneurs to provide good service to the visitors.

A more festive journey

CONFERENCE AND PARTY On the upper deck there is a VIP-lounge that seats 15 people that is perfect for a business meeting over the day or to celebrate a birthday or anniversary.

M/S Cinderella I and II bring tourists and Stockholm natives to the most beautiful and popular islands, and treat the passengers to a memorable trip.

T

he season starts around Easter and ends at the end of October. M/S Cinderella I takes the travellers to the island of Möja. M/S Cinderella II’s final destination is the island of Sandhamn. Both of the trips start on Strandvägen in Stockholm and have stops at the most popular islands on the way, including Vaxholm. – Our ferries bring the travellers to the most beautiful and well-liked islands such as Grinda and Finnhamn. Among our guests you will find tourists who want to experience the archipelago over the day but also people who reside permanently, or have their summer homes in the archipelago, says Cecilia

Strandberg, Marketing Director at Strömma Kanalbolaget. The trip starts in central Stockholm, passes through the inner parts of the archipelago and continues all the way to the islands on the outer edge. – Our passengers get to see the entire archipelago and how the nature shifts from green islands with a lot of vegetation to a more barren landscape. Travel in comfort Cinderella I and II do a lot more than just transporting passengers from one place to another. It is a high quality experience with great food. Each ferry has two decks. On the lower deck there are places to sit both inside and

outside and a cafeteria where the passengers can purchase coffee, a glass of wine and something to eat. – For those who want an even more festive trip there is a high class restaurant with an onboard chef on the upper deck with an exit to a large sundeck. You can chose between dishes from an à la Carte menu that are inspired by the archipelago and we have a good selection of wines.

Explore the archipelago with

Waxholmsbolaget

You don’t have to have your own boat to be able to explore the archipelago. Waxholmsbolaget’s ferries will take you to many islands – both the most well visited, but also the undiscovered gems. Enjoy a day-trip or bring your tent and go island hopping. Purchase a ticket Enkelbiljetter köper du i förväg You can buy one-way tickets at the ticket office in advanced or onboard the boat. They cost between SEK 47 and 140 for adults and between SEK 35 and 92 for seniors, students and youth. You give your ticket to the deck hand when you have reached your destination. You can also use your prepaid travel card to purchase one way or return tickets onboard and when you have spent SEK 750 you get a discount. A 30-day ticket costs SEK 790 for adults and SEK 520 for seniors, students and youth. It is valid from your first trip and is prepaid via your SL access smart card.

Public transport at sea All of Waxholmsbolaget’s traffic is a part of the public transport system in Stockholm. Therefore you cannot reserve a seat on the boats. The ferries work just like the busses and trains, except for the fact that they travel on the water. If you are in a group of more than 10 people and will travel during high season, it is a good idea to call customer service to alert them of you so that they can plan accordingly. Island hop The 5-day ticket costs SEK 445 for everybody and is valid for 5 days from the time you start your journey. If you are 7 – 19 years old there is a 6-month ticket for SEK 1 360.

SEMAPHORES On all of the piers in the archipelago there is a round sign, called semaphore, which can be lowered. When you are waiting for the boat the sign is supposed to be in a vertical position, like a street sign. It is a signal to the staff on the boat that somebody wants to embark. It is important that the semaphore is aimed at the vessel. If it is dark you need to signal with a flashlight. In case of fog the boats come closer to the piers in order to see the semaphore. It is important for the traveller to stay visible on the pier. 11

Please note that other rules concerning fire apply in national parks and in nature preserves. Study the information signs closely

CAMPING

OPEN BURNING PROHIBITION ORDER During dry weather conditions an open burning prohibition order may be declared in order to decrease the risk of forest fires. You are, however, still allowed to use charcoal grills or small canteens with an open flame if you are careful.

IN THE ARCHIPELAGO If you are a small group the law of common access grants you the right to raise your tent and to stay one night at any suitable place in nature. But keep your eyes open for signs regarding local rules.

T

he law of common access is an old customary law that we all use when we wander in the forest, go kayaking or pick blueberries. It provides us with a unique access to nature, but it also means that we have to act in a responsible way. Being responsible means that you do not disturb or destroy anything that you come across.

Can you make a fire? Few things are as cozy as sitting around a campfire at night. But you need to be cautious with the fire. Every year great values are lost due to forest fires caused by campfires that have spread. When you make a fire you need to select a place where the fire is not at risk of spreading or damaging the ground.

You are allowed to use pine cones and sticks that you find on the ground to make your fire. It is, however, not allowed to cut anything from a living tree or bush. If you are out in the archipelago it is also important for you to remember not to make a fire on the rocks by the water. The heat makes them crack, leaving permanent scars. 13

A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY TO GET CLOSE TO NATURE. BUT REMEMBER TO BE RESPECTFUL.

Find a place to camp! I f you are going camping in the woods this summer it might be good for you to know that the law of common access grants you the right to raise a couple of tents for about 24 hours. If you are a larger group you need to ask the landowner’s permission since that means that there is a greater risk of damage to the land and sanitary problems. If you are in a national park or a nature preserve there are different rules, and generally speaking it is only allowed to raise a tent in designated areas. In some places camping may also be forbidden. Look at the information signs in the park that you are visiting, or do an online search.

FINNHAMN Finnhamn is a popular spot for campers, and it is easy to travel to. Aside from the campsite there is also, among other things, a youth hostel, a store and a restaurant.

NORRTÄLJE

– the capital of Roslagen

Photos: Roine Karlsson, Norrtälje Museum

With its picturesque downtown and amazing archipelago Norrtälje is a popular place to visit year round. During the summer season the city that dates back to the middle ages is bustling of life.

D

uring the summer the population of 59 000 is doubled. And no wonder. Roslagen has been a popular place for people who are looking for rest and relaxation since the 1800s. There are open meadows, an ocean of islands and not the least, Norrtälje, the cozy capital of Roslagen. In the middle of the city the Norrtälje river swirls its way from the lake Lommaren and reaches the glittering water in the Norrtälje bay. If you look closely into the water you will not only notice spawning fish such as sea trout – there are also works of art. The closeness to the water was probably one of the reasons for the first people to settle here. Tälje was mentioned 18

in writing for the first time in 1296 and was called “Tälje village”. In the year of 1409 the city got its current name “Northern Tälje”. King Gustav II Adolf formally founded the city in 1622. Still today there are visible traces of the history. Norrtälje’s street grid dates back to the middle ages. The city hall, located in the town square, was built in 1792 in exactly the same location as the 1600s council cottage. In the city hall there is a well-known cheese shop. Tullportsgatan is a popular street with a large number of little shops as well as the city’s oldest stone building. Not far from the city center there are

several factory towns where you can still experience mansion life and the nature of Roslagen. FIND YOUR WAY HERE ¬¬ Norrtälje is located just short of 70 kilometers from the city of Stockholm. You travel here via bus 676 that departs from Tekniska högskolan. Car is an excellent way of travelling in Roslagen. Drive either on the highway E18 or the country road 276. Naturally you can also reach Norrtälje by boat.

SEE AND DO

In Norrtälje there is always something to do. Here are a few of the fun things that are well worth you time! Swim Within the city limits there are two bathing sites. Visit Kärleksudden if you prefer to swim in the ocean or the lake Lommaren where there also is a slide. If it is too cold to swim outside Norrtälje has an indoor pool with a slide and a jumping lagoon in the old water tower. Society park During the 1800s Norrtälje’s grand park was built in order to meet the summer guest’s needs for recreation and entertainment. Today the society park is used for entertainment, events and activities. Walk along the river There are several cozy places to stop and enjoy the scenery along the Norrtälje river. “Art in

the river” is an exhibition by a number of artists who use the river to put their art on display. The summer exhibition opens in July. Pythagoras Industrial Museum The old ignition bulb motor factory is located up on the southern mountain. Once upon a time the factory built engines that were sold all over the world. Today the factory still remains in exactly the same condition as when it closed in the 60s. Norrtälje Museum Norrtälje Museum that was built recently is located right below the Pythagoras museum. The exhibitions are focused on ethnography, photo documentation, current history and to convey the coun-

ty’s cultural history. Focus is on creating tomorrow’s history and to preserve it for the next generation. The Small Square In Gustav II Adolf’s park by the city hotel there are works of art by Klara Kristalova. The Wallingska Farms from the 1730s are located in the small square and here you can also se “Havsstenen” by Håkan Bonds that is a memory of the city well. Restaurant: Steamship Norrtelje When the ship s/s Norrtelje was built in 1900 she was considered to be the pinnacle of the art of shipbuilding. For about 50 years she travelled the archipelago and today she is a restaurant and a small museum.

Welcome to

FURUSUND!

Pop into the restaurant by the water and enjoy a lovely summer lunch in the sunshine. Why not order something from the grill or an ice cream. The holiday feeling finds you immediately when you sit on the dock and look at the boats and people in the harbor. It’s perfectly ok to stay a little longer than you planned!

Furusunds värdshus ligger precis vid vattnet i ett vackert gammalt tullhus som byggdes 1811. Värdshuset har totalrenoverats under våren och är nu lika härligt och välkomnande som under glansdagarna i mitten av 1900-talet.

D

uring the 1800s Furusund became a popular bath and spa town both in Sweden and abroad. Royalty and cultural celebrities such as August Strindberg and Carl Larsson visited the island. Tollhouse turns tavern In the mid 1900s the old tollhouse was turned into a tavern and is now run by Malin Jönsson and David Mattsson. The couple previously ran Fejan’s archipelago restaurant and since 2016 they also run the restaurant on the famous steamship s/s Norrtelje in Norrtälje harbor. During the winter they were busy renovating the tavern. The goal is to put Furusund back on the map and to make it a popular place to visit for both private guests and companies. – Now we have exposed the old log walls in the restaurant

and the old brick walls in the bar. The interior is a lovely mix of new and old and large panorama windows let generous amounts of light in, says Malin. Growing business Malin and David are looking forward to see the business with Furusund’s tavern, hotel and guest harbor grow and the development is already under way. The harbor café is turned into a restaurant and the sundeck has been extended so that you now sit right by the water. – The guests can enjoy an ice cream or something to eat and a glass of wine during the lovely summer days. We will also have “after sail” with music on the dock in the afternoon and then move the entertainment to the tavern in the evening.

GUEST HARBOUR In connection to the restaurant in the harbor there is a full service guest harbor with 80 slips for the visitors.

STAY THE NIGHT At the hotel there are 16 lovely and light rooms, most of which have an ocean view. In 2018 the hotel will be renovated and there are plans to increase the number of rooms.

In Astrid Lindgren’s footsteps “Uncle Melker, how come you always swim with your clothes on?” That and many other magic quotes are sprung from the very popular TV-show Seacrow Island that was taped on Norröra in the northeastern part of Stockholm’s archipelago.

N

orröra is believed to have been one of the first inhabited islands in Roslagen and during the 1300th the island belonged to the Penningby estate. Around the turn of the century 16 families, with about 50 people, 40 cows and a dozen horses, resided on a permanent basis on the island.

22

Since Norröra was the place where Seacrow Island was taped you are probably already familiar with the surroundings. Norröra is situated right outside of Furusund where Astrid Lindgren spent her summers, and she was surely inspired by the life of the summer guests and the year round residents. Maybe you remember the Granqvist family who ran the

shop and the Melkersson family who spent their holidays in the old carpenter’s home that was falling apart. Or perhaps Stina who loved to talk about what life was like on her street in the city. Visit Seacrow Island Since April 2006 you can travel by boat with Waxholmsbolaget every day year round. During the

summer Blidösundsbolaget also frequents the island and arranges tours with the archipelago guide Michael Blum with a Seacrow Island theme. During the tour Michael shares stories about how the TV-show came to life and shows the school, the house where Stina lived and the pier where Melker fell into the water.

After the guided tour there is plenty of time for walks and swimming from some of the nice rocks around the island. The isthmus “Näset” is also popular among the visitors. The island also has a picturesque village that is just a short walk from the steamboat pier.

The Siarö fortification is located at a comfortable distance from Stockholm and offers both culture and play.

Culture and play at the SIARÖ FORTIFICATION

SCHOOL TRIP AND CONFERENCE

If you are having a conference, a birthday celebration or are planning a school trip it is possible to rent the entire island. A lot of people also get married and invite friends and family to party in the beautiful surroundings.

“Siaröfortet” is an old coastal fortification that is located between Vaxholm and Furusund. It is at a comfortable distance from Stockholm and the combination cultural history and swimming makes it a perfect spot for all ages and generations.

S

iaröfortet is located on Kyrkogårdsön in Furusundsleden, about three kilometers north of Ljusterö. The construction of the well-known fortification was initiated in 1916. It was manned for the first time in 1926 but was closed again in 1939 as the coastal defense was moved to the outer parts of the archipelago. Today Siaröfortet is open to the public. It takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes to travel by boat from Stockholm. For those who happen be north of the city, and prefer to travel by car as far as possible, there is also a boat from Östanå that reaches the island in 10 minutes.

– Of course it is also possible to travel here with your own boat and to berth in our guest harbor, says Göran Ahlquist at Blidösundsbolaget who runs the business on the island. Adventure play and culture For the children the fortification is an tempting adventure playground and there is plenty of space to climb, run and jump yourself tired. The adults appreciate the beautiful environment and the island’s exciting history. There are guided tours with information about the fortification’s history every day during high season.

– The fortification is untouched and everything looks just like it did when it closed. It is like the time has been standing still. Most people who come to the Siarö fortification stay over the day, but a lot of people also opt to stay the night. There are 30 beds in the youth hostel that is housed in the old military lodgings and there is an additional 20 beds in two military tents. – The youth hostel has a restaurant that is open daily during the summer and serves cold and hot dishes.

Archipelago

OMRÅDE FASHION Navy at sea and on land Navy blue and stripes are classic at sea. But they look just as smart in the city. The functional sailor fashion has an air of vacation and sunshine. Sailor fashion isn’t just for people who spend all their time at sea in rain or shine. And what counts as “traditional sailing gear” has changed over the years. From having been garments that can withstand rain and wind, a large selection of elegant and functional clothes has emerged. Clothes that allow you to step right off the boat and into the restaurant or bar. You don’t actually have to have set foot on a boat in order to think that a pair of cargo shorts and a striped sweatshirt look nice in the summer. And the sailor shoes that are easy to get in and out of are just as comfortable in the city as on the dock.

This year Charlotte Malmberg at Henri Lloyd encourages the ladies to be brave when it comes to patterns. She suggests that you can add a scarf in the same pattern as the one on the skirt. Or why not match the top and the bag? Compared to fashion in general the marine fashion in characterized by the colors white, blue and red, and the stripes that stay strong season after season. But during the last couple of years we have also seen the emergence of black. A color that was hardly present at all in the sailor fashion a few years back now has a natural place.

TOTAL COMMITMENT®

A CLASSIC FOR OVER

50 YEARS

HENRI LLOYD

– A brand with the ocean in its DNA If you haven’t owned a jacket or a pair of sailor shoes from Henri Lloyd chances are that you are still familiar with the name and the logo. The brand has been popular among the boatpeople for over 50 years.

H

enri Strezelecki who emigrated from Poland after the Second World War founded the classic English sailing brand Henri Lloyd in 1963. From the beginning they manufactured functional clothing that were designed for sailing in rough conditions. It wasn’t until 1985 that the brand entered the fashion scene when members of the Paninaro movement wore the classic Consort jacket. – The step from sailing brand to an international fashion brand was actually a co-incidence. It started when our Consort original sailor’s jacket became the hippest one could wear among the people who drove vespas in Italy and it has unfolded ever since, says Charlotte Malmberg

who is a marketer at the Henri Lloyds Swedish distributor Sportmanship. MARINE INSPIRED LINE Henri Lloyd is not a fashion brand that follows trends but sticks to their marine inspired line every year. But even if a lot looks the same in the maritime spirit these days you see nice and bright colors as well as the traditional navy blue. – Our brand is unique as it is both well-known and exclusive and it is loved both by young and old. Today Henri’s sons Paul and Martin Strezelecki run the company and they continue to

develop the brand with new materials in order to facilitate life at sea in rough conditions. The knowledge of materials is also integrated into the lifestyle collections where function meets fashion. Henri Lloyd is also well known for their nice shoes and accessories such as bags and hats. – In addition to the classic sailor shoes that are available in a number of different color combinations we also have sneakers that look just as good on the pier as on the boardwalk. Henri Lloyd also has a number of different durable and stylish bags that you often spot on sailboats and docks. From weekend bags to vanity cases in technical waterproof materials as well as every day bags made of canvas and leather. 35

VÄRMDÖ

– mainland and islands Värmdö is a well-visited and rapidly growing county in the archipelago, with famous islands such as Sandhamn, Grinda, Svartsö, Nämndö, Runmarö and Möja.

V

ärmdö county has a little over 41 100 inhabitants and is one of the country’s fastest growing counties. Many move to Värmdö to come closer to the nature and archipelago but at the same time stay close to the city. Värmdö has a rich design- and culture history with Gustavsberg’s porcelain museum at the center and a wide variety of things to see and do, just 30 minutes from Stockholm. A large number of archaeological findings indicate that there were people on Värmdö as early 44

as during the stone age. The first time Värmdö was mentioned in writing was in 1314 when it was spelled Wermdö. One rune stone has been found and it is situated by Väsby gård’s iron age gravesite. During the second half of the 1800s the commoners from Stockholm started visiting Värmdö during the summers. Along the steamboat waterways beautifully decorated summerhouses were being built and Stockholm’s summer paradise started to take shape.

FINDING YOU WAY HERE ¬¬ It is easy to travel to Värmdö by bus from Slussen or by boat with Waxholmsbolaget or the Cinderella boats from Nybrokajen and Strandvägen.   Car is also an excellent mode of transportation for getting around on Värmdö. The road 222 takes you from Stockholm to Värmdö.   If you have a leisure boat you can berth at one of the guest harbors on the islands.

ARTIPELAG Artipelag is a privately owned art hall with a number of different exhibitions in wonderful surroundings and with a 1-kilometer long sea front walk. You get here by boat from Nybrokajen with Strömma from May 6th to September 24th in 2017. (Return trip by bus).

DJURGÅRDEN – an oasis of experiences in the city

Photo: Vikingaliv Photo: Karolina Kristensson, National Maritime Museums in Sweden

Djurgården is a place where both Stockholm natives and tourists go when they want to experience something out of the ordinary. The island is a part of the Royal National City Park and there are a large number of attractions; from museums and amusement parks to art and culinary high points. The bike is an excellent mode of transport for those who want to see all of Djurgården in one day. You will have time to visit parks and museums but it will also allow you to get really close to the nature and water. Many of the most popular places, such as the Vasa Museum, the Nordic Museum, Skansen and Gröna Lund are located just a short stroll from the bridge. It is also possible to walk to Waldemarsudde and Blockhusudden, but the bike will get you there in no time. – Djurgården is amazing and there is always something new to experience. We have two of Sweden’s finest art museums –

Prince Eugene’s Waldemarsudde and Thielska Gallery. The art collections are unique as well as the surroundings. Nice restaurants and cafes heighten the experience. Rosendal’s garden is also a lovely place to visit. They have a wonderful garden and gardening philosophy and you have your meal in the midst of everything that is growing, says Camilla Zedendahl who is the managing director at The Royal Djurgården Society.

MUSIC ON DJURGÅRDEN The amusement park Gröna Lund attracts some of the world’s most popular artists and offers concerts that really stand out. Another Swedish summer classic is the singalong on Skansen that is hosted by Sanna Nielsen. Don’t miss ABBA the Museum and POPHouse where music is in the center every day of the year.

FUN FOR ALL Aquaria Water museum, Juni backen, Wasa Museum, Nordic Museum, Abba The Museum, Vikingaliv, Gröna Lund, Skansen, Spritmuseet, Prinde Eugen’s Waldemarsudde, Rosendals trädgård, Rosendals slott, Hasselbacken, Thielska Gallery. Technical-, Etnographical-, Police-, Sports- and the Maritime museum.

New on Djurgården This year there are several new attractions that are worth a visit. On Junibacken there is a theme

exhibit about Barbro Lindgren who has written a large number of children’s books. 2017 also marks the opening of the new Viking museum: Vikingaliv. – Vikingaliv, Viking life, is a new museum where the life of the Vikings is dramatized in an exciting way. The visitors get to see this era from a new perspective and you will get answers to your questions. Did they really have horns on their helmets? How did they live? Where did they travel?

MEET VISIT DJURGÅRDEN Visit Djurgården’s information center is located just to the right when you cross over the bridge. Get answers to all your questions, the best tips for the outing and rent a bike.

A visit to Grinda in the summer is a given for many holidaymakers in the archipelago.

Lots of archipelago close to the city The nature preserve Grinda is the Stockholm natives’ vacation spot number one. Come here to enjoy animals, nature, swimming and excellent food in different price classes. Visit for the day or stay over night.

G

rinda’s popularity can partly be explained by the fact that the island is located close to the city. The lovely boat trip from Stockholm only takes between an hour and an hour and a half. But the main reason for the island’s popularity is of course that it is a truly lovely spot. The whole island is a nature preserve and you can move freely on the whole island and swim

48

wherever you like. On Grinda there is a nice child friendly beach that fits the younger children as well as cliffs that are perfect fort the more adventurous holidaymakers. There are also plenty of meadows where you can roll out your picnic blanket. Food on Grinda There are two popular restaurants on Grinda and a café right next

to the country store. Wärdshuset that is located just a stone’s throw from the guest harbor serve everything from the classic fish soup to more exclusive dishes. At Framfickan that is located right next to the dock by the water you can get a nice meal in no time. New on the menu for this year is the trendy “archipelago pizza”. Your dog will also get water at both restaurants while you eat.

Grinda offers lovely rocks and cliffs as well as a child friendly beach.

Country Store There is a country store on Grinda with a café that serves freshly baked bread and pastries as well as traditional “café dishes” and an excellent assortment of ice creams. Stay the night Many visit Grinda over the day, but there are plenty of options for those who want to stay the night. There is a lovely hotel, a youth

hostel, cottages and a campsite. There is a nice guest harbor if you have your own boat. Conference paradise During the high season Grinda belongs to the holidaymakers, but during the pre- and post seasons the conference guests are in focus. Their niche is environment- and nature conferences and even though there is a conference room

in the hotel, a lot of the guests bring the flip chart outside. And when you are finished with work there are a lot of fun teambuilding activities to chose from. In collaboration with partners Grinda offers everything from sailing, fishing, boating to pigeon shooting.

Animals on Grinda

T

he animals on Grinda have always been popular among the visitors. As of last year Maria Jörgensson and her family are the tenants on the farm that is owned by the Archipelago Foundation. On the farm there are cows, horses, pigs, sheep, hens, rabbits and dogs and cats. During the summer the

animals are grazing in pens on the island and are important to keep the landscape open. – During the high season there will be pony-rides everyday if the weather allows and you can sign up to assist me in taking care of the animals. There is more information abut the activities on our

website, on Facebook or on the information board by the steamboat pier. You are also welcome to stop by for a chat, says Maria.

At Bistro Kastellet the visitors can enjoy home made pastries, what might be the world’s best waffles and excellent lunches with raw ingredients from local producers.

Walk the plank on the

CITADEL

Do you have the courage to take a new and exiting way down? When you arrive at the Vaxholm Citadel it is only a short walk to the magnificent courtyard. Thereafter you climb the 130 steps up to the tower where you will enjoy a majestic view.

O

n a clear day you can see all the way to the Stockholm Globe Arena when you are up in the tower. And for the visitors who feel particularly brave there is a brand new attraction called “Walk the plank” at the Citadel. Just like the name suggests you walk the plank – and fall off! It is perfectly safe, but will definitely get your adrenaline pumping. – You free fall for a couple of seconds and then the fall is slowed down smoothly until you set foot on the bricks in the courtyard. The minimum age is 7 years and you do not have to book in advance. It is perfect for the hen party or the birthday, says marketer Lisa Wallin. Escape activity In case you do not enjoy heights, or if you simply want to have

even more fun at the Citadel there is another activity that is new this season. Here it is not about jumping – no, you will get locked up! No need to book in advance. – We have created a number of different rooms with different themes and the group that gets locked up has to solve a mystery in order to get out. Some rooms make a great family activity and others suit a conference group. Experience history The Citadel has the largest museum in the archipelago. For adults the entrance fee is SEK 80 and it is free for persons up to 18 years of age. – In the museum you will see how Stockholm’s coastal artillery has changed throughout the times and also what life on the Citadel looked like when it was

a place of trade. To engage the children we have made a movie that depicts what life was like for the young back then. TRAVEL TO THE CITADEL ¬¬ You travel to Vaxholm by bus, car or one of the many Waxholm boats that stop in Vaxholm during the summer season. The Citadel is located on a small island just outside of Vaxholm and the short trip over takes just one minute. The ferry leaves every 15 minutes and costs SEK 40 for adults and is free for children. If you arrive in your own leisure boat there are slips in the guest harbor.

DJURÖNÄSET HAS ITS OWN FOLKPARK THAT OPENED IN 2016.

A piece of heaven close to the city Djurönäset is a gorgeous getaway that’s located just a 35-minute drive from Stockholm. Here you can swim, have a nice meal and enjoy live music.

I

n spite of the fact that it only takes about a half hour to drive from Stockholm to Djurönäset you reach a spot in the real archipelago. A four star hotel is located on the cape and there is a park for music and dancing, called Folkpark, and lovely beaches and rocks. The hotel’s restaurant is open year-round and the restaurants Skärgårdskrogen Sjöboden and Terrassen are open during the summer. – At Sjöboden we serve food from the grill, our guests sit right by the water and every Tuesday

52

and Thursday evenings we have live music that brighten the summer’s nights even further, says marketing manager Pia af Rolén. A place to hang out Last summer the new folkpark opened at Djurönäset. During the summer season there will be different types of music to go with the traditional open-air dance floor in front of the stage. – Our thought with the music park is for it to be a place where people can meet and have fun

together. There will be a lot of enjoyable activities in the park this summer, but one of the highpoints will definitely be the festival “Skärgårdsfestivalen” on the second Saturday in July. During that day there will be several music performances and activities for young and old ranging from a jumping castle and face painting to speed-boating and going for a ride in a helicopter. “On our web site you will be able to read all about what will happen during that day.”

Djurönäset’s hotel has a lovely spa area where you can disappear into a relaxing world of saunas and showers. Enjoy the warmth and the view of the ever changing ocean and nature.

Plenty of room in the guest harbor A new guest dock with 60 slips is located close to the folkpark on the eastern side. Next summer it will be turned in to a proper guest harbor. – The new guest dock is perfect for those who want to participate in one of the events at the music park. We also have guest docks on the western side of the cape. From

that dock it’s only a short walk to the restaurant Skärgårdskrogen Sjöboden. Delightful hotel At the hotel there is a 25-meter pool, saunas, areas for relaxation and the possibility to get spa-treatments. On the western side there is also a wooden fired sauna and two sauna hot tubs that larger

groups can reserve. For guests at the hotel there are also bikes, canoes and rowboats to loan. – There is a lot to do here, but the best is to come here with the intention of not doing anything at all. Take a couple of days to enjoy the ocean and nature.

Tyresö palace is surrounded by a beautiful English park which was designed by Fredrik Magnus Piper.

TYRESÖ PALACE – AN EXCURSION WITH A

Downton  Abbey FEELING

TYRESÖ SLOTT – A palace on the brink of the archipelago Among the people who live on Tyresö, the palace from the 1600s and the surrounding English park is a popular place to visit. It is located close to Stockholm and makes for a great family outing.

G

abriel Oxenstierna built Tyresö palace in the 1600s and over the years its numerous owners have altered it in different ways. Today it looks the way it did in the early 1900s before the museum took over. Claes and Caroline Lagergren who acquired the palace at the end of the 1800s were the last owners. He had a career in the catholic church where he had a position as papal chamberlain and was also appointed a marquis by the pope. She was a wealthy American and it was with her 54

inheritance that they purchased the palace. Modernities from the turn of the century The couple renovated and modernized the palace and installed central heating and phonebooths where you could make both local and long distance calls. It is their old, pretty luxurious residence that is today’s museum and there are also two wings that house a restaurant and a café. Claes Lagergren donated the palace to the Nordic Museum that

took over after his death in 1930. A piece of land was included in the donation and the surroundings closest to the palace have a timeless ambiance, as you see almost no modern buildings. Beautiful Palace Garden A beautiful English park that was designed by Fredrik Magnus Piper surrounds the palace. It was built in the 1770s and is located by Kalvfjärden, where the mainland meets the archipelago. There are beautiful oakand apple trees in the garden and

plenty of room for picnics and games. Visitors can also walk over to Notholmen where there is a café and nice places to swim. Opening hours Tyresö palace is open from May 25th and during the pre-season it is open during weekends. During the high season, that stretches

from the week after midsummer to when the schools start, the palace is open between 12 – 16 from Thursday to Sunday. It is possible to visit the palace with an audio guide in Swedish or English or to take a traditional guided tour in Swedish. There are also family tours that are suitable for children between the ages of 6 and 10.

Tyresö women in the spotlight This year there is a temporary exhibit at the palace that features the meeting between Tyresö women of today and the former ladies of the palace.

BOATING

For the boat people it just isn’t summer unless you get to spend some time on the water. But you don’t have to have a motor- och sail boat of your own in order to have a great boating experience. Stockholm actually has an extensive public transport system in the archipelago that allows you to feel the wind in your hair and to experience a large number of wonderful places. It is also possible to rent a boat for a number of days or weeks. The archipelago is full of wonderful secret spots such as beaches, smooth rocks and nature trails. In the following pages there are tips from seasoned sailors on how to stay safe at sea, what cour-

ses you might take to learn to navigate and how the way we look at food when we are at sea has developed over the years. The law of common access and The Archipelago Foundation contribute to making the archipelago highly accessible to the public. But there are also a number of privately owned guest harbors. Here in the magazine you can read about some of the beautiful natural- and guest harbors that are worth a visit. Guest harbors offer more service and in the natural harbors you will vacation in a more Spartan fashion. On several of the Archipelago Foundation’s islands there are saunas that take the summer feeling to the next level. 63

A CULINARY TIME AT SEA It wasn’t that long ago that the food you ate at sea for the most part came from a can. But that’s not the way it is anymore. The trend of tasty and carefully prepared food at sea is a reflection of the growing food-interest in Sweden. ”When I was little the food that you ate when you were on an outing was about getting something in your stomach. For our family the culinary experience is an important part of our vacation at sea. We plan our meals and cook from raw ingredients”, says Helen Kretz Bolander who for a number of years has spent the better part of her holiday at sea with her family. What does an ordinary breakfast look like when you are out sailing? – About the same as at home. Sometimes we make croissants and scrambled eggs. There is “dough in a can” that’s convenient to bring along. I also think that it’s hard to beat the feeling of having freshly picked blueberries on the morning sandwich. And what about for lunch? – Around lunchtime you are typically en route and the food depends on the weather. If it’s

sunny we make a nice pasta dish and if it’s rainy and windy we often prepare sandwiches in advance. Another Swedish lunch classic is of course herring and potatoes. Describe a typical dinner. – For dinner we just about always barbecue meat or fish and enjoy it with some nice side dishes. One of my favorites is ratatouille that I make with the vegetables that are about to go bad.

Pit stops at sea ☛☛ Guns Livs at Nämndö has the same selection and prices as your local grocery store. There is also a gas station and a restaurant. Rödlögaboden is the most eastern store in the archipelago and they have, among other things, a nice selection of cheese. Rödlöga has a great all-weather port and there is also a bakery.

Ratatouille Tasty side dish and a great way to use up the vegetables that are about to go bad. 1 brown onion •• 2 cloves of garlic •• 2 carrots •• 1 zucchini •• 1 yellow bell pepper •• 1 can of cherry tomatoes •• Olive oil •• Balsamic vinegar •• Sea salt •• Black pepper ••

Chop the onion and the cloves of garlic finely. Sizzle the onions in olive oil. Peel and jardinière the carrots. Sizzle with the onion. Chop the zucchini and pepper in pieces and put in the pan. Sizzle for a few minutes. Add the can of cherry tomatoes. Simmer for 10 minutes. Add balsamic vinegar, salt and black pepper.

COMBINE THE GPS WITH A TRADITIONAL NAUTICAL CHART FOR A BETTER OVERVIEW.

SAFE AT SEA Hans Broman started sailing as a 10 year old and has sail raced ever since. Together with his crew on Nemo he has participated in The Round Gotland race and ORC WC in Helsinki. In this article he shares his best tips for a safe journey. Navigational dexterity Digital nautical charts and GPS have made navigation simpler, but it doesn’t mean that you can disconnect your brain. Nautical charts have a margin of error of a number of meters and you need those margins on your side when it comes to staying safe. A tip is also to combine the GPS with a traditional nautical chart since they provide a better overview. Plan for the unforeseeable It’s good to have a plan, and for the team to have discussed it, regardless if it is about taking the sails down in rough weather or if a serious situation like man overboard were to happen. In an emergency it is crucial not to go

in to chock but to stay calm and industrious. Don’t forget the life jacket When it comes to the life jacket the most important thing is to actually wear it. Most adults at sea use buoyancy vests. These will keep you afloat, but will not flip you the right way in case you are unconscious. There are also inflatable life jackets that are safer since they will turn you the right way in the water. Note that you need to keep track of the expiration date of the components and to wear it properly. Who you gonna call? During emergencies at sea you call 112 just like you would in

case of an emergency on land. If you have VHF radio you can also call on channel 16. That will alert the sea rescue center and boats that are nearby that you need assistance. But you may also need help even if it is not a life or death situation. Perhaps the battery has gone dead or that you have run aground and cannot get unstuck on your own. Since this is likely to happen at some point it is sensible to be a member of The Swedish Sea Rescue Society, a volunteer organization that will come to the rescue in non-emergencies.

Learn for a life at sea Stockholm’s amazing archipelago gets a lot of people dreaming about roaming it in their own boat. With the right competence the trips will be both nicer and safer. But what knowledge do you really need?

I

n contrast to if you are going to drive a car, you do not need a license to maneuver a normal leisure boat at sea. But it’s good to know that the same rules regarding alcohol that apply when driving a motor vehicle also apply on the boat. If you are on the market for an education the organization NFB is a good place to start. It is a nonprofit organization with the mission to develop and confirm certificates of competence in Swedish boating education, authorize examination officers and to inform education associations and the public. The organization was founded in 1985 in collaboration between a number of authorities and organizations.

In this article we will take a closer look at two common certificates: the Inshore Diploma and Offshore Diploma. Inshore Diploma If you want to learn the basics in how to navigate a leisure boat in a safe way it is a good idea to get the Inshore Diploma. It is a certificate that indicates that you have sufficient knowledge regarding how to drive a boat in protected waters, in daylight, when the sight is good and that you know the essentials of good seamanship. Offshore Diploma If you want to drive a boat that is longer than 12 meters and wider than 4 meters you need

the Offshore Diploma. It is a certificate that indicates that you have adequate theoretical knowledge to drive a leisure boat in protected and unprotected waters in both daylight and in the dark, when the sight is clear and in compromised sight conditions and that you know the essentials of good seamanship. The Offshore Diploma is not an authorization to drive commercial boats or ships. Just like for the Inshore Diploma an authorized examiner will test the student’s knowledge.

FILL THE TANK AT OKQ8

ENERGY DEPOT Fill up both the tank and the picnic basket at the marine gas station on Lidingö.

OKQ8’s gas station and marina by Islinge on Lidingö’s west coast is one of the most centrally located marine gas stations in Stockholm. It is a great place to fill both the tank and the picnic basket.

T

he number of marine gas stations has declined over the past few years, but OKQ8 has a marina and a gas station that is situated on Lidingö’s west coast facing Lilla Värtan. Here you can both fill up the tank with regular gasoline and diesel that is prepared for boats. The station is a good economic choice for the boat people for a number of reasons. – It is easy to navigate in the marina and our competent and friendly staff always do their best to make the customers feel welcome and make sure they get the best possible service when

they visit ut, says Pär Neuman, Sales Manager at OKQ8. Check out boats At the same time as the customers are filling up their boat they can also get something to eat, such as one of the fresh and filling sandwiches that are prepared at the store each day. They are perfect for the outing or for a lunch at sea in Stockholm’s wonderful archipelago. – In addition to the sandwiches there are also cinnamon rolls, salads and hotdogs to buy and I dare say we have one of the tastiest and most affordable hamburgers on the market.

Newly renovated Before the last boating season OKQ8 restored their marina and now there is a lovely sundeck with tables an seats where you can enjoy and ice cream or a coffee and a sandwich and watch the boats in the bay. – In spite of the small size of the shop we have a wide selection and our soft ice cream is very popular among our visitors.

Utö guest harbor

Natural harbor of Morviken Fjärdlång

GUEST HARBORS A guest harbor is a harbor with slips that you as a visitor can use temporarily for a fee. In a guest harbor there is typically access to drinking water, a kiosk, fuel, waste disposal, toilet, shower or sauna, and an emergency phone. The Northern Archipelago – Öregrund Guest Harbor The guest harbor is located at the heart of Öregrund and is open year round and offers full service from the first of June to the end of August. There are 60 slips that cost SEK 50 for the day or SEK 200 for 24 hours. The Middle Archipelago – KSSS Guest Harbor on Sandhamn The guest harbor on Sandhamn consists of three floating docks with landings in between that sit right in front of Seglarhotellet. 76

It is open from the last weekend of April to the last weekend in October. There are 150 slips. On Lökholmen there is an additional 200 slips, and a ferryboat will take you over to Sandhamn.

part that you reach via Persholmen is usually calmer and it is also easier to find a spot there during high season. In the harbor area there is a reception, kiosk, café and ice cream parlor.

The Southern Archipelago – Utö Guest Harbor Utö is located in the outer archipelago in the South of Stockholm and there are 250 slips in the guest harbor. The harbor consists of the northern and the southern part. In the northern part there is a gas station and the southern

Natural Harbors

THE LAW OF COMMON ACCESS AND THE ARCHIPELAGO FOUNDATION CREATE A UNIQUE AVAILABILITY.

A natural harbor is a place that with its protected location makes it suitable for leisure boats to berth. It is free of charge and there is typically no service available. There are however outdoor toilets and garbage disposals in some of the natural harbors. The Northern Archipelago – Idö Today Idö has no permanent population and the island with its lovely nature and cultural landscape is a popular vacation spot. It is possible to raise a tent on most parts of Idö and there are natural harbors in Idöflaten and Idskär. Drinking water is available in two places on Idöflaten and outdoor toilets and garbage disposal are available in connection to both of the natural harbors. On the island there are hiking trails and paths. The Middle Archipelago – Stora Kalholmen Stora Kalholmen was The Archipelago Foundation’s first land purchase. It is a popular place to

visit for those who enjoy silence, nature and jumping from cliffs into the ocean. The natural harbor is situated in a well-protected lagoon in between the islands. On the island there is a youth hostel with basic standard and a sauna. The Southern Archipelago – Fjärdlång Fjärdlång is a popular island among the boating people. There are nice natural harbors that are suitable for just about any wind conditions and a smaller guest harbor. On the island there is also a youth hostel, cottage rental, campsite and a kiosk. Fjärdlångs nature preserve is a typical example of archipelago nature

and also includes the islands of Ängsön-Marskär, LångholmenBockholmen. Ridö-Sundbyholm’s archipelago The nature preserve Ridö-Sundbyholm is located in Mälaren’s western part between Granfjärden and Blacken and consists of about 160 islands and islets. You reach them via your own boat. On Sundbyholm’s island there is a dock on the southeastern side of the island and it is also popular to berth at Räfsgarn where there are nice beaches, rocks and a barbecue site. If you enjoy bird watching a visit to the preserve is highly recommended, as there are 100s of breeding species of birds here. 77

Utö - den kompletta ön Här finns något för alla. Vackra sandstränder där du kan finna lugn och ro. Många bra restauranger. Mycket aktiviteter. Bra promenadstigar och bra cykelvägar. FUN STUFF

On Nåttarö you can rent a bike, kayak and a rowboat if you want to go fishing. Since there is no traffic on the island it is perfect for bike rides. This year there are marked trails that make it easy to navigate the island. But feel free to explore on you own!

Nåttarö’s most popular beach, Storsand, was selected the best beach in a test in Expressen.

Summer feeling on NÅTTARÖ Nåttarö is a vacation paradise where there are no permanent residents or summerhouses. Here you can live the simple life.

W

hen it became official in the fall of 2015 that The Archipelago Foundation was looking for new tenants for Nåttarö, Peter Ljung realized that this was his chance of making his old dream of working in the archipelago come true. He visited the beautiful sand island and got the full experience from the back of a four-wheeler together with island supervisor Ove Nilsson. – When I came close to the amazing nature, the sand and shingle beaches I felt both humble

80

and hopeful. What if I would get the opportunity to work here? And in the end that’s how it turned out. From the long list of interested parties the Ljung family, who were already running the restaurant Kroken in Nynäshamn, were selected. – Our business on Nåttarö engages the entire family and today four generations are involved in the management of the island in different ways. It is my wife Carina and myself, our four

children and spouses and grandmother Maggan. Our children’s little ones also participate. 2016 became the first year for the Ljung family on Nåttarö, and the second season will offer a number of new things on the island. There will be live music in the barn and the restaurant will treat the guests to jazz and folk music. – Another piece of news that a lot of people will be happy about it the fact that we now have a massage therapist on the island.

Shopping ▲ Bring the family on a bike excursion to a beach over the day and play some soccer with the other families in the afternoon. Round off the day with a sauna and a barbecue to make it perfect.

Just like before Magnus and Leila are still running the minimarket and here you will find just about everything you might need during a weeks stay on the island. From bread and meat for the grill to fishing brails and snorkels. This year there are also to clothing stores on the island with clothes from Pelle P and emma och malena.

Photos: Hirschproduktion

STAY HERE There is a youth hostel, a number of cottages that are located centrally on the island and campsites for people who stay the whole summer and just for a few nights. This year you can also rent the cottage on Ängsholmen where the artist Egil Malmsten spent the summers with his family in the 1950s.

Gem in the south On Skansholmen there are two restaurants and a café as well as a popular guest harbor and a campsite. If you want to put your fisherman’s luck to the test there are boats for rent at the gas station.

M

any of the visitors come to Skansholmen for the food. There are two restaurants; one is an a là carte luxury restaurant and the other restaurant has a more relaxed atmosphere. – At the restaurant Skansholmen Sjökrog there is gourmet food and in the Bistro we serve, among other things, our popular hamburger and what might be Sweden’s largest shrimp sandwiches, says Thomas Linder who runs the businesses on Skansholmen. There is also a brandy distillery on Skansholmen that in 1998 got the first permit in Sweden since 1865 to distill its own liquor. The “brännvin” is only served to the guests at Sjökrogen. – Our own liquor is made of potatoes and is spiced with ecological herbs from our own garden and local producers. Back in the day all restaurants 82

in the archipelago with a sense of pride had its own distillery, and it is fun to carry that tradition forward. Fisherman’s luck? Skansholmen is located by the “Skans channel” that is well known for being an excellent place to fish herring in the spring and fall. During the summer you can fish pikeperch, bass and northern pike. – We have about 20 rowboats, with or without an engine, for rent and you can purchase fishing gear at the gas station. Camp close to nature There is a small homey campsite on Skansholmen with about 60 spots that all have electricity. The campsite is located on a hill with a view of the ocean in all directions. At the campsite there are also a number of small cottages for rent. Showers and toilets are

located in a service building close to the campsite. Safe harbor and gas station Skansholmen is known for its deep and well-protected harbor. There used to be a military base that was closed after the First World War. The gas station is located by the guest-pier. GETTING HERE ¬¬ Skansholmen is located in the southern part of Stockholm’s archipelago between Södertälje and Trosa. Travelling by land you can either come here by car or public transport from Stockholm or via Södertälje/Mörkö or a ferry over Skanssundet from Grödinge/ Tumba. During high-season the ferry crosses the channel to Skansholmen/Mörkö between 6 am and 11 pm.

Gotska Sandön is located on the crest of a 120 kilometer long, and up to 90 meters high, sand and gravel moraine that stretches from Kint’s embankment east of Gotland via Salvorev to the north of Fårö all the way up to the Cupperstones, 20 kilometers northeast of Sandön.

GOTSKA SANDÖN – reclusive and scenic There are no restaurants or nightlife on Gotska Sandön. All is calm and quiet. The national park treats the visitors to a unique nature experience and historic sites.

G

otska Sandön is situated 37 kilometers north of Fårö and is the most isolated island in the Baltic Sea. The island is 36 square kilometers, nine kilometers across and is situated on the crest of a 120-kilometer underwater sand and gravel moraine. The national park on Gotska Sandön was founded in 1909 and

is one of Sweden’s oldest. Visitors come here to experience the calm, the nature and the wildlife and the season stretches from the end of May to the beginning of September. In spite of the fact that the island is one of our most isolated ones, traces of humans that date back to the Stone Age have been found. Archaeological finds

suggest that fishermen and seal hunters used the island as a temporary base. In the 1700s people who kept livestock and hunted seals lived on the island. In the beginning of the 1800s a man named Peter Gottberg lived on the island with his family and rumors state that he lured ships aground, killed the crews, and pillaged the ships. 85

Seals are fascinating animals and great fun to observe when they lay about bickering bon the rocks, says supervisor Petter Rimfors.

On Säludden – Seal Cape – there is a hiding-place that is one of the few places in Sweden that lets you get really close to grey seals.

During the 1830s and 40s there was a wharf on the island and around the time that the lighthouse was built in 1859 the state purchased the island. Today the island is uninhibited, aside from the park supervisors. But up until the 1970s, when the lighthouse was automated, the lighthouse keeper lived there with his family. On an island in the Baltic Sea Petter Rimfors has been one of the supervisors on Gotska Sandön since 2010. Together with his colleagues he makes sure that the visitors find their way and that everybody takes care of flora and fauna. – My job as a supervisor entails a wide range of tasks. Here on the island there are more than 60 buildings that we maintain and repair, and last winter during the storms we spent a good deal of time to cut pine trees that had fallen across the roads. What would you say characterizes the visitors that come to Gotska Sandön?

86

Photo: Klas-Rune Johansson / IBL Bildbyrå

Most visitors go to the beaches on the western and northern parts of the island. If you want a beach to yourself you can walk to the French bay on the other side.

27

KILOMETERS OF BEACHES

– Many of those who come here are interested in nature and wildlife and enjoy hiking. Here on the island there are 60 kilometers worth of trails where you can experience everything from beautiful beaches to magic forests and cultural heritage sites. The island is large, there is a lot to experience and most visitors stay for two to three days to see and do it all. Socializing seals Is there something that the animal lover cannot miss? – There is a place called Säludden – Seal cape – where there is a hiding place that is one of the rare places in Sweden where you get really close to grey seals. Seals are fascinating animals and it’s great fun to watch them laying around, bickering on the rocks. And if you enjoy glorious views? – Then I recommend a trip to Höga åsen, a 40-meter ridge with pine trees that are over 400 years old. When you stand at the top you have an amazing view.

Where do you go for a swim? – There are 27 kilometers worth of beaches, so you just have to jump in. If you want company I recommend the beaches on the northern and western parts of the island. If you enjoy solitude you can walk down to the French bay on the other side. Our beaches are wonderful. Time and space for reflection There is also a popular chapel on the island. – Our chapel is a beautiful dovetailed little building with a steeple and there is a service every night between midsummer and the end of August. It’s not very formal; the pastor shares his or her experiences and thoughts from the day. The quiet and stillness on the island creates a perfect setting for reflection. Is there anything else that we can’t miss? – We have a lighthouse museum and a nature- and native environment museum. The lighthouse

museum was opened in 2016 and during a visit you learn about how the people lived there before the lighthouse was automated. Provisions only came once a month and you never really knew what the contact with the outside world would look like. TRAVEL AND LODGE ¬¬ The trip to Gotska Sandön takes 3,5 hours with a ferry from Nynäshamn and just over two hours from Fårösund.   Visitors who want to stay the night have a number of different options. You can sleep in your own tent, rent the lighthouse keeper’s house or rent a room in a cottage. There are no stores or restaurants on the island and the visitors have to bring all of their provisions from the mainland. Nowadays there is a 4G-cell phone tower on the island.

Restful camping in the archipelago This summer several activities are arranged for children, such as a swimming school during the weeks 29 to 31. ▼

The troubadour evenings are very popular but nothing beats the singalongs on Wednesday evenings. (From June 28 to August 9.) ▼ OPEN: During the 2017 season the camping is open between March 31 and October 1st, and with full service from June 16 to August 20th, 8.00 – 22.00. “We strive to stay open in the winter. Hopefully this year”, says Andrea.

One of the east coast’s most quaint and lush little archipelago cities is located less than one hour from Stockholm. It offers everything from child-friendly beaches, swimming school and sing-alongs to docks, freshly baked bread and excellent fishing waters.

O

ut on a cape in Trosa’s beautiful archipelago there is a true gem for all who enjoy archipelago life and camping. The blue ocean glimmers and the vegetation treats the eyes to numerous nuances of green. – Last year a Dutch artist came to visit and he described that he had painted more green colors than ever before in Swedish nature, says Andrea Folkesson Cronhielm at Trosa Havsbad & Familjecamping. A view of the archipelago A lot of people come here over the day and others chose to stay much longer. On the lush and hilly campsite there are places to raise a tent and also spaces for

caravans and motorhomes as well as 11 rental cottages. – Our most popular cottages are the ones that sit right by the water. If you want to stay in one of those you need to book a long time in advance, Andrea says. Among the visitors who arrive by car the camping sometimes is called “terrace camping”. The visitors are probably referring to the spots with patios on different levels with a great view. Top class water and sun On Trosa Havsbad & Familjecamping you have every opportunity to swim and the beach is child-friendly. – Families with young children love it here. For many years tests

have shown that the water quality is excellent, says Andrea. Available service In the same building as the reception there is a store with a wide selection that offers full service during high season. At Kafé Rävudden out on the cove a breakfast buffet is served. You can also get coffee and pastries, ice cream, food, carbonated beverages and alcoholic beverages. An increasing number of the products that are sold at the camp site and in the café are organic. – Our dream is to receive a KRAV-certification, says Andrea.

Nynäs havsbad – with the ocean next door

GUEST HARBOR If you travel to Nynäs Havsbad with your own boat there are slips in the guest harbor.

People have travelled to Nynäs Havsbad since the early 1900s. Even if that spa didn’t quite look the way it does today the goal of the visit was still the same: rest and relaxation for body and soul.

N

ynäshamn is situated in the outskirts of the archipelago, yet it is still just a 35-minute trip by car from central Stockholm. At Nynäs Havsbad you can experience the ocean, sky, cliffs and the light and feel a stillness that will make you feel entirely rested. – Just below the hotel we have a wonderful 6-kilometer long beach trail and there are perfect sunbathing rocks and coves where our guests can find their very own nature spot, says

90

Anne-Maj Colbing who is site manager at Nynäs Havsbad. The ocean right outside the door At Nynäs havsbad you will fall asleep and wake up with the ocean as your neighbor. The two hotel buildings, Strandhotellet and Badhotellet, sit just by the edge of the water and the spa, Havspaviljongen, is built on pillars above the water. – There are three different types of saunas, hot tubs on the pier, an indoor pool and a relax area where you can lay and gaze out on the

ocean. During the summer we will offer some basic spa treatments on the pier when the weather allows. In the restaurant you have a glorious view of the ocean. During the summer the feeling of being outside is enhanced further when the big sliding doors are opened. The food that is being served can be described as “modern with Nordic flavors”. – We also have a bistro on the pier that is open during the summer. There you can sit and relax, have a nice lunch and enjoy the season.

HISTORIC RESORT IN A MODERN STYLE When the railroad between Stockholm and Nynäshamn was ready in 1905 the wealthy families from Stockholm started building elegant summer homes on the beautiful island Trehörningen. They are still present to a large extent. The hotel was opened in 1907 and soon members of the royal family as well as celebrities were

among the regular guests, such as Gustav V, the princes Bertil and Wilhelm and the author Moa Martinsson. Back in those days you swam in the cold bath, went for strolls and enjoyed good food and drink. Popular spa-treatments back then were mud baths and pine needle baths. Not too different from how it is today.

After World War 1 the hotel had fallen into decay and closed in 1919. It wasn’t until 2003 that the hotel reopened after extensive remodeling. Today Nynäs havsbad is a modern spa, hotel and conference facility.

he music festival Nynäskalaset saw the light of day last summer. It was an instant success and this year it will be an even bigger party for both adults and children. Fredrik Fernström who moved to Nynäshamn a few years back is one of the originators. – During my first summer here I thought it was peculiar that a gorgeous summer city like this did not have a music festival. That made me gather a number of locals who are interested in music, and from the beginning our thought was to collaborate to create a small event. But the little idea grew and the first edition of the festival turned

Just like last year the tent will be erected in the park Svandamsparken, which is situated close to the guest harbor and the train station. – We are all about quality in all areas of the festival. The Drottningholm Palace is on UNESCO:s list of world heritages. It was built in the 1600s and is Sweden’s most well-preserved royal palace. In 1981 the royal family moved in and today it is the King and Queen’s permanent residence.

SWEDEN'S FIRST WORLD HERITAGE Together with the Chinese Pavilion and the Royal Theater the Drottningholm Palace became Sweden’s first world heritage in 1991.

– Islands of Culture E kerö County consists of a group of islands i Mälaren close to the city of Stockholm and you can travel here by bus, car or boat. The beautiful islands provide a great number of close to nature experiences such as horticultural businesses, bathing sites, farm stores and nature trails. But Ekerö is also a true treasure for those who are interested in archaeology and history. Among other things there are 8 medieval churches and several palaces to visit.

102

Ekerö also prides itself with two of Sweden’s world heritages that are visited by tens of thousands of people each year. Drottningholm palace was built in 1662 and was together with the Chinese Pavilion and Drottningholm’s Royal Theater named Sweden’s first world heritage. For the Swedes the palace is most well known as the home of the king and queen. Birka-Hovgården, which dates back to the 700s was named the second world heritage and you can read more about Birka on page 104

in this magazine. Read more about Hovgården, that was the site of the king’s castle, on this spread.

See and do Ekerö has a flourishing business- and culture life. In addition to the world heritages there are several popular country stores and a number of churches from the 1100s. Hovgården Together with Birka, Hovgården is also on UNESCO’s list of world heritages. It is situated on Adelsö and was a royal estate from the middle of the 700s up until the 1300s. On the island there are remnants of two large Viking style houses and the medieval palace Alsnöhus. Rosenhill Rosenhill – Garden, café and cider factory is a popular watering hole for both locals and tourists. A visit to Rosenhill will no doubt be

memorable because it has its very own rustic charm. In the fall you can stuff the trunk full of apples and return home with the most delicious cider. The café serves ecological and vegetarian food. If you want to stay the night there are rooms to rent. Äppelfabriken – the Apple Factory Äppelfabriken’s cider factory, café and country store is open during the summer season and was named Sweden’s most popular “green destination” in 2014. Apple orchards have been located

in Hilleshög on Färingsö since the 1640s and today they refine apples and other fruits and berries and make marmalades, chutneys and cider that they sell in the store. Historic churches On the islands of Ekerö there are no less than 8 churches that date back to the 1100s. One of the most popular ones to visit is the round steeple church on Munsö. It has a unique architecture and has a baptismal font from the 1200s. 103

This year the restaurant Särimner har been transformed into a Viking restaurant in collaboration with Martin “E-type” Ericson and resembles his place Aifur in the Old Town. This summer the visitors are also offered rides in a horse and carriage in collaboration with Ekerö parish allowing them to see more of the island and to visit Ansgar’s chapel.

EXPERIENCING VIKING LIFE Referred to as the oldest city in Sweden, Birka was founded in 750 AD. With time the little island in Mälaren developed into the most important trade- and crafts center in central Sweden and was a part of a Nordic trade network.

Birthday present on the world heritage list

huset.s

Ellgaard

THE PAVILION AND THE THEATER IS ON UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE LIST.

The increased trade with Asia during the 1700s sparked the interest for Chinese and Japanese art and culture. That was probably why King Adolf Fredrik decided to give his wife Queen Lovisa Ulrika a China inspired palace for her birthday.

T

he Chinese Pavilion is designed by Carl Fredrik Adelcrantz and is located in the Drottningholm park in Ekerö County. Today’s building was constructed in 1763 and was predated by a smaller Chinese pavilion in wood. It was built in brick, with a billowy roof and exotic decorations. In spite of the name it is a small rococo palace and the building itself has no similarities with Chinese buildings. The knowledge of the Chinese art of construction shines through in the red facades and sculptural décor. It is a beautiful and exotic

mix of the occidental and the oriental. The Chinese Pavilion underwent an extensive renovation that was finished in 1996. Today the Chinese Pavilion is a museum and open to the public in the spring and during summer. It is a notable building and together with the Drottningholm Palace and the surroundings it is also on UNESCO’s list of world heritages.  Read more kungahuset.se Unique theater from the 1700s King Gustav III had a great interest in music and theater and therefore there was opera, panto-

mime theater and opéra comique at the palace theater up until his death in 1793. It wasn’t until the literature historian Agne Beijer found the theater untouched that the restoration was initiated. Today the theater is full of life just like during the times of Gustav III, and there are opera-, theater-, and dance shows as well as concerts and tours of the building. If you are curious and want to take a closer look at the theater there are guided tours in both Swedish and English. During the high season tours are also available in German and French.  For more information: dtm.se 107

THINGS TO DO AND SEE Today the “shrimp cruise” is a well-known concept, but when M/S Vindhem started their cruises 30 years ago they were pioneers. Since then close to a million people have been out dancing, enjoying live music and devoured massive amounts of shrimp. And given its popularity it is apparently an activity that appeals to most people. If you turn the pages you will be able to read an article that will tell you more about the well-known ship Vindhem and her history. Even if the best way to experience the archipelago simply is to be in the present, most of us still want to take pictures that will allow us to remember the summer during the dark season. We want to

capture those wonderful moments when the children hurl themselves off a cliff into the water or the butterfly that sits quietly in the middle of a daisy. Photographer Bodil Bergman Hughes shares her best tips on how to take excellent pictures with a system camera and with a smart phone. Did you always dream of sailing in the archipelago? Or are you an avid sailor who currently does not own a boat but really miss the wind in your hair? In that case you don’t have to wait any longer. Now you can rent a boat including a skipper and custom make your own trip just the way you want it. Thomas Forsberg at Sailing Events will tell you all about how to make the dream come true.

115

GO SAILING FOR THE HOLIDAY

▲ Do you think that sailing has to be cold, windy and with an uncomfortable tilt? Today’s boats are comfortable and might even have a higher standard than the average home.

Do you dream of sailing in the archipelago? Private persons and companies, regardless of previous experience, can rent a sailboat with a skipper and design their own archipelago experience.

T

homas Forsberg founded sailing Events 12 years ago. Back then he worked in the advertising industry and spent all his free time in the archipelago. He asked himself why there was no company that made it easy for more people to experience sailing. – Todays generation want many experiences so rather than owning a boat of your own it

116

suits them better to sail one or a couple of days before it’s time for the children to attend soccer camp, says Thomas.

– There are 22 000 islands in Stockholm’s archipelago and three times as many grounds, so it is safer with a guide.

When you rent a boat from Sailing Events a skipper always comes along. The skipper is responsible for the safety but the guests that are onboard are welcome to participate in all the sailing duties as much as they like.

– Our skippers also know their history and can tell you all about the buildings and islands that you pass. Each journey is designed to suit the party that rents the boat. If you want sandy beaches you will have beaches and if you are into fishing we’ll sort that out too.

Conferences at sea for up to 200 people

Conference at sea Each summer a million people spend a part of their holiday in the archipelago. But the archipelago isn’t just wonderful in July and you don’t have to be on holiday to enjoy the ocean and the nature. Sailing Events offers packages with sailing and teambuilding for up to 200 people distributed on 20 boats. That sets a perfect stage for a race. – We will put together a solution that suits everyone from a management team to a whole company. Sailing is always popular, and especially so if you have foreign customers or suppliers. They have never seen anything like it. No event that Sailing Events arranges is like the other. But they are always meticulously planned and there is always something for all of the participants. – We usually welcome the guests with coffee, and then we divide

the group into teams of about ten and after a safety run through we set sails. During the day there is usually time for a race, a nice lunch and there will also be time just to hang out and bask in the sun. Teambuilding and trust Sailing is an effective teambuilding exercise, particularly since it shakes up the roles in the group. The boss might not be the person who has the most experience and someone who is quiet at work might be the one who steps up and shows a new side of themselves. – This is something completely different than a conference and business lunch in the city. In a more down to earth atmosphere you can get to know each other in a completely new way and you build trust and confidence in one another.

30

YEARS JUBILEE

ROCK ’N’ ROLL & SEAFOOD CRUISES Read more vindhem.com

2017 marks the 30-year anniversary for M/S Vindhem in Stockholm’s archipelago. Since the beginning over 900 000 people have come along on the popular cruises with shrimp, tacos and live music.

I

nitially the ship was built to traffic the route Kalmar – Borgholm, but since the bridge to Öland was opened the same year as the ship was ready she was commissioned to other jobs in the Nordics for a few years. Later on she was purchased by the famous restaurant Vindhem on Alnön outside of Sundsvall and that’s when she got her current name. When the restaurant burned down in 1987 the ship was sold to Stockholm and Vindhem’s new career started. Today it is Stefan Jonsson, who has been with the business since 1990, who runs it. – I started as a deckhand and today I am captain and managing director. But after 27 years I have pretty much had all jobs one can have on this ship. To me it is

much more than a job, and I plan on staying for another 27 years. Shrimp cruise pioneer When M/S Vindhem started up their shrimp cruises they were one of the first to offer that concept. Back in those days the archipelago wasn’t as popular a destination among the Stockholm natives as it is today and that meant that you had to lure them to sea with good food and live music. – Someone came up with the idea of serving shrimp at sea. It was practical since it didn’t require any warming and it was an instant success. Today we also serve tacos on our cruises. We want for it to feel unpretentious and welcoming for all. Since the start in 1987 close to 900 000 passengers have

joined the parties at sea on M/S Vindhem. The ship seats 360 passengers in two lounges and attracts both groups of friends, organizations and companies. – Our goal is for everybody who joins us for a cruise to feel welcome and I think that the number of regulars proves that we have succeeded. This year is the fourth season M/S Vindhem offers sightseeing tours. – We had to move to our current location right by the castle due to the fact that Slussen was being rebuilt and then it was natural to extend our offering. During the summer we offer a two-hour guided sightseeing tour in the archipelago. M/S Vindhem has a lovely sundeck that also happens to be a great place for lunch. 119

Make the memories last Bodil Bergman Hughes has worked as a photographer for many years. In this article she shares her best tips that will help you document the summer in a professional way. Essential light If you have a system camera with a good lens it’s optimal to take nature pictures at dusk and dawn, and never in the middle of the day. Photographers talk about something called the blue hour. It occurs right at the start of dusk and offers the most wonderful lighting conditions. If you use the camera on your smart phone it can be difficult to snap sharp pictures at dusk since there is limited light, but it works fine at dawn. Family pictures If it’s in the middle of the day and the sun is shining it’s smart to move the family into the shade. Otherwise they might have a hard time keeping their eyes open. Thereafter you encourage the group to move really close together. Nag until the heads are really close. It makes a big difference for the feeling of the picture.

Smartphone Photography Bodil’s number one rule when it comes to the smartphone photography is not to think too much about optimal circumstances, but to use it to capture the magic moments that arise in everyday life. If you want to take close-ups with your modern smartphone you can lock the focus where you want it. That will make the background a little bit blurred and the object that’s in focus will stand out more. You lock the focus by holding your finger on the screen until it blinks “locked exposure and focus”. Thereafter it doesn’t matter if you move the camera a little bit. If you want the picture to be lighter or darker you can move your finger up and down on the screen. It is also clever to: Make sure that the lens, the •• little round one on the back of the phone, is clean.

Keep the button pushed ••

down to take several pictures in a row. This is useful when you for example snap pictures of children who are swimming or jumping.

Access the camera quickly by ••

swiping up (or to the side) on your locked phone. That will launch the camera without you having to enter your pin code.

The prettiest sunset A beautiful sunset will make everybody with a smartphone camera within reach want to use it. It is however difficult to capture a sunset in a way that the image conveys what the eyes and heart see. Bodil suggests that the best way to enjoy the sunset is to put the camera down and enjoy the moment. If you feel that you must take a picture you can add an Instagram filter or use another editing app in order to bring out the colors. Another tip is to place people in front of the camera since it makes beautiful silhouettes.
