ARCHIPELAGO

Stockholm’s archipelago consists of more than 30 000 islands and thanks to The Archipelago Foundation a large number of them are accessible to the public. In the pages to come you can read about their mission, and how they work behind the scenes in order to ensure the accessibility of the archipelago today and in the future. In the northern archipelago there is wonderful nature and an environment that has been influenced by the trade between Sweden and Åland. In the middle archipelago there are both vibrant islands with restaurants and nightlife, calm creeks and a divine outer archipelago. Stockholm’s southern archipelago

is more barren and the part of the island world that looks the most like the Swedish west coast. In the next few pages we will tell you about some of the ways in which you can experience the archipelago. It doesn’t have to be neither complicated nor expensive. Perhaps all you need is a SL-smart card, a tent and a sleeping bag? Because in Sweden the law of common access makes it possible. If you are a Swedish native chances are that you know the basics of the law of common access. But if you are from a different country you will probably find it interesting to read about what it means and what rights and obligations it entails. Keep reading!

▲ W hether you are right now on boat and already on your way to the archipelago or just making plans to visit, there is a real good chance that you will get in touch with Skärgårdsstiftelsen – the Archipelago Foundation – in one way or another.

STOCKHOLM’S ARCHIPELAGO

THE STOCKHOLMIAN ARCHIPELAGO ENJOYS A UNIQUE POSITION IN THE WORLD.

The Archipelago Foundation Creates Possibilities No matter if you experience the archipelago from a fishing boat, an ocean kayak or a passenger ferry, it is quite impossible to ignore the natural beauty of the archipelago. That holds true for every season of the year. What is your preferred way to experience the archipelago? The archipelago receives its largest share of visitors during the summer. The water is swim-friendly, the islands full of greenery and most of us have a longer, consecutive block of vacation time. But for many, the archipelago is a place to find peace and quiet also during other seasons, whether it means just taking in the beautiful nature or performing some sort of leisure activity. It is just as lovely to travel by boat during the summer as it is gliding through nature on glossy winter ice. You will experience total freedom. Stockholm enjoys 6

the best of foundations for skating on natural ice; a wavering winter climate that is “just right”, and a widely spread body of water that will gradually develop ice in pace with the increasingly freezing temperatures. Vibrantly Colorful and Pale Beauty The low season of the archipelago is a journey from the vibrant colors of fall through the pale beauty of winter to the budding green of spring. The tranquility will be ubiquitous and surroundings may surprise as visitors will be exposed

to the powers of nature. But there is something special about summer: sun-kissed cliffs, walking barefoot and picnicking on the beach. Or why not a lovely dinner at one of the archipelagic sea restaurants? Due to its extreme variations in scenery, innumerable bays and capes to discover and the quite remarkable ability to dock just about anywhere without considering tidewater, Stockholm’s archipelago enjoys a unique position in the world. Also contributing to its uniqueness do the vast areas that are free for the

public to explore, without trespassing signs or fences, as well as the tranquility combined with wilderness; the barren landscapes mixed with an abundance of primeval forests and meadows. About the Archipelago Foundation The Archipelago Foundation was founded in 1959 to ensure the archipelago remains accessible to

the public. Today, the foundation works for you to experience an open and accessible archipelago but also to preserve the archipelago for coming generations. The Archipelago Foundation owns and manages about 12 percent of the land in the Stockholmian archipelago, divided into 40 areas from Örskär to Landsort. The responsibilities range from

waste management to long-term strategies for land and real estate development. The operation is structured around three main areas: real estate and buildings, nature preservation and tourism development. Read more at www.skargardsstiftelsen.se

CINDERELLA

A Simple Way to Get to the Islands Cinderella ferries bring tourists and locals to the most beautiful and popular islands in the archipelago, where the journey itself becomes an experience. Route servicing starts at Easter and continues through the end of October. M/S Cinderella I takes passengers to Möja whereas the final destination for M/S Cinderella II is Sandhamn. Both originate from Strandvägen in Stockholm. “Our boats take archipelagic travelers to the most gorgeous and well-liked islands, such as Sandhamn, Grinda and Finnhamn. Our guests travel with us for many reasons; tourists making a lovely island day trip, permanent inhabitants of the archipelago going to and from home and summer guests who stay at their vacation homes in the archipelago”, says Cecilia Sandberg, Director of Marketing at Strömma. The boat journey goes all the

way from the central parts of Stockholm, through both the inner and outer parts of the archipelago. “While traveling, you will get to appreciate the entire archipelago and its characteristic shifts in scenery, from lots of greenery and trees to an increasingly barren landscape.” Travel in Style Cinderella ferries do a lot more than just transporting passengers from one spot to another. They strive for quality in everything they do, offering excellent service, comfort and food. You can also spruce up your trip at the upper deck restaurant. “In the upper deck restaurant, our guests can choose à la carte

WAXHOLMSBOLAGET

Island Hopping or Day Trip Waxholmsbolaget’s boats are part of Stockholm’s public transportation network and an easy way for archipelago residents and visitors to get to the islands. The ferry ride is an obvious part of the archipelago experience, no matter how long or short it is. The popular North-South route connects the northern and southern archipelago and makes it easy to island hop. The 5-day ticket (445 SEK) allows for exploring the archipelago without having to return to the city or Vaxholm between stops. “Most people choose to visit islands that have a youth hostel or rental cottages. The trend also increasingly shows that people seek more convenience when they travel. Islands that have nice oceanside restaurants are also popular”, said Richard Borgström, manager of the water transportation board. A clear favorite, both among Stockholmians and tourists, is a day trip to a popular island. Waxholmsbolaget’s website lists suggested day trips; planning

a day trip is actually as easy as buying a round-trip ticket. ”Many of Stockholmians haven’t visited the archipelago very often. We hope that more Stockholmians will take the opportunity to visit islands such as Möja, Sandhamn or Huvudskär this summer. The feeling of being on vacation appears as soon as you embark the ferry. It’s also becoming more and more popular to make just a short excursion to the archipelago. Waxholmsbolaget operates three museum ships of which Norrskär and Storskär offer restaurants with high-quality food and drinks. Guests will enjoy both the meal and the ravishing view. ”We offer a number of day trips of varying length depending on

what you like. Many choose to travel between Stockholm and Vaxholm and back; that journey takes about five hours. Ship and App Ferry schedules are available on our app “Waxholmsbolaget” where you can also track ferries in real time. Routes are also listed on SL’s (Stockholm’s public transportation company) website and on SL’s app. Waxholmsbolaget’s website has received a makeover this year; now it is easier than ever to find departures, prices and other information. The boat M/S Vindhem pioneered the area of shrimp entertainment cruises nd is now on its 31st year of this, by now, well-established concept. ▲ A rock music cruise allows Swedes to let loose and party like nothing else. Prepare to have a great, great time!

M/S VINDHEM

Music, Dancing and Happiness at Sea

If you have ever been on an M/S Vindhem cruise you are not alone. For the past 30 years, close to 900,000 people have joined one of the popular archipelago cruises where shrimp, tacos and live music flow. Spring and fall are especially lively times for these cruises. M/S Vindhem was originally built to service the route Kalmar – Borgholm, but since the bridge was opened that same year the boat was used for different routes around the Nordic region for a few years. Subsequently, M/S Vindhem was purchased by the renowned restaurant Vindhem on Alnö Island outside Sundsvall. That is how it received its current name. When the restaurant was lost in a fire in 1987 the boat was sold to Stockholm where it is still in use. A Truly Swedish Experience A cruise on M/S Vindhem is an excursion appreciated by all ages. Many have made it a tradition to go on one cruise every year. The boat and its two dining rooms has room for 350 sitting passengers

and attracts friend gatherings, associations, companies and families. If you are a tourist in Stockholm, going on an M/S Vindhem cruise is an excellent opportunity to experience Swedes when they are at their happiest and liveliest. “In addition to playing live music we also serve shrimp and tacos. Even those who don’t normally dance usually get captivated by the cheerful and casual atmosphere. We want all our guests to feel welcome and relaxed onboard our cruise.” More Music during Spring and Fall Most people are aware of the archipelago’s extreme beauty during the summer but fewer know that the scenery is ravishing also during spring and fall. Aboard

M/S Vindhem, the focus is on music during the low season. “During spring and fall you get this feeling that you are all alone in the archipelago. The light makes the landscape even more beautiful. During the low season live bands will play music longer and the bands are usually more well-known. This year, the band Svenne Rubins will perform onboard on July 31. Later, during fall, other popular bands, such as, Smalare än Thord and the latino pop band Furillos, will perform. (At the time of writing this article, more artists and bands are being booked to play onboard M/S Vindhem.) Read more and book at www.vindhem.com 15

▲ We’re really talking “Hyper Local Sourcing”. Our pantry is right outside of the door and our intention to cherish all that nature has to offer!

SUNDSTA SÄTERI

Nature’s Pantry Outside the Door Sundsta Säteri is an oasis in Roslagen, just a short car ride from Stockholm. The manor dates back the 1600s and will welcome you to experience the good things in life just the way you are. Enjoy walks in the forest, golf and fun-filled activities as well as carefully prepared food and pastries. Sundsta Säteri is located in a beautiful historic environment just a short distance from Finsta, the alleged birthplace of Bridget of Sweden. Many are drawn here by the gorgeous nature, but quite a few come primarily for the food. The restaurant serves a classic Swedish cuisine, buffet style, both for lunch and dinner, but can also offer a picnic-basket for the bike ride. There is also a well-renowned café on the premises that is famous for their homemade cookies, crisp bred and chocolate confection. – We pride ourselves in making as much as possible ourselves and from raw ingredients. It is our way of being self-sustaining and of staying in control of the processes and the result. We enjoy taking care of everything and

to have the pantry just outside the door, says Therese Baalack who runs the restaurant and café. Cabins of different sizes are available for those wishing to stay the night. From two-person cabins to larger ones housing up to twelve. Golf and hunting Sundsta golf has two courses, located adjacent to the manor, with a total of 27 holes. The course is best described as a nature course that makes the most of the natural conditions. Sundsta Säteri also offers the possibility to get you hunter’s license. It is an intensive three-day course during which you stay on the premises, learn all the theory and conduct all necessary tests. – We are located close to the forest, have our own game

pasture and it is a great place to get a taste for the hunter’s life, says Mikael Thörn, gamekeeper at Sundsta Säteri. Dance all night If you just want to enjoy the good things in live; a lovely buffet dinner followed by dancing will suite you perfectly. Activity in combination with delicious food – does it get any better? Activities Stag party, conference or just a fun day of play. Who doesn’t enjoy folk racing, paintball or clay pigeon shooting? The perfect program can be created for you. Read more at www.sundsta.se 19

HISTORICAL ARHOLMA

Northeast of Norrtälje, Arholma is one of the most northern islands in the Stockholmian archipelago and consists of barren cliffs as well as cultural landscape. Due to its position as the last island before Åland, Arholma has always been of great strategic significance. This is where the Russians commenced their plundering of Stockholm’s archipelago in 1719. During the Cold War, Arholma was the first barrier and outpost in Stockholm’s military defense.

NORTH ARHOLMA

Historical Island in the North A fairly large and bustling island, Arholma is the most northern stop on the Waxholm Ferry Company’s north/south service route. The island is home to a small general store and an ice cream shop. If you use North Arholma as your starting point you will find both peace and calm as well as adventure right around the corner. North Arholma is situated by the ocean bay at the most northern point of the island. Facilities used for military purposes during the Cold War are now used for lodging, a restaurant and an activity center. The restaurant is open all summer long and offers delicious grilled dishes as well as its popular ‘tapas in a jar’. From the large patio, guests enjoy a magnificent view of the ocean and the horizon. “Our purpose is to offer a travel destination where you can go without lugging around a bunch of items. Breakfast is included for all our guests. Those who really want to relax choose a full board package and can eat both lunch

and dinner at the restaurant”, says Robin Vesterlund who is a co-owner of the Arholma facility. Nature and Adventure Proximity to the ocean and nature as well as the old military fortification attracts guests of all ages to many different activities nearby. Vacationers enjoy the convenience of everything gathered in one area. “Many find visiting the old artillery battery exhilarating, but we also offer zip lines, bike rentals and mountain bikes as well as canoes and paddle boards”. Although the lodging is a bit simpler than a hotel (showers

and bathrooms are located in the hallway), the beds are comfortable and the service is excellent. The Waxholm Ferry Company will take you to Arholma from Stockholm, Norrtälje or Simpnäs.

Low Season ☛☛ Weekend Package Many choose to book a weekend package for North Arholma during the low season. The archipelago is at least as beautiful in May and September as it is in July. Read more at www.arholmanord.se 21

VACATION VILLAGE KAPELLSKÄRET

Close to Nature and Cruise Ships

HI DOGGIES! Pets are allowed in some of the rooms at the youth hostel and in some of the cottages.

Vacation village Kapellskäret consists of one STF-affiliated youth hostel, a camping site, rental cottages as well as a marina for small boats and a guest harbor. It is especially popular to use the free-ofcharge bus service to and from the Viking Line ferry terminal. The youth hostel offers eight rooms and 32 beds at a terrific location inside the Riddersholm nature preserve. Belonging to the Riddersholm mansion, the house was built in 1880 and was originally used as housing for workers. The ocean is a ten-minute walk away and you will pass the camping and cottages on the way. At the camping site, there is a service facility with showers, restrooms and a kitchen. “Many come here to enjoy the wonderful nature. In addition to sandy beaches and hiking trails, you can also rent bikes and canoes. During spring, it is popular to come and watch the abundance of orchids that grow here in the nature preserve”, says

Lotta Unosson and Peter Andersson who operate vacation village Kapellskäret. New RV Dump Station New for this year, Kapellskäret now offers 22 RV parking spots with electrical outlets as well as an automatic Dump Station for RV cassette toilets. “We are the first ones in the Stockholm region to offer this solution for those who park their RVs with us. LIDÖ

Tranquility and Gastronomy Lidö Inn & Restaurant is a popular destination for families as well as those who take interest in great food and beautiful nature. On Lidö, you will find everything from an animal safari to wood-fired bath barrels and captivating lookout points. Lidö has a long history. A baroque-era castle, destroyed during the Russian plundering of 1719, used to stand at the current location of the inn and restaurant. The inn was later built on top of the old ruins. Today Hugo Olofsson and Olle Tejle operate it. “Only one family lives here on the island permanently, year-round. If you go for a walk in one or the other direction you will be totally alone. Many find it delightful to experience the ocean and untouched nature in such tranquility”, says Olle Tejle. As of several years, the restaurant at the inn is listed in the White Guide as one of Sweden’s 600 best restaurants. In the deli, ‘the Oasis’, that is located in the guest harbor you will find specialty pizzas and delicious beverages. It is very popular to sit there and enjoy the sun with an ice cream or a cup of coffee.

Family-Friendly Lidö ☛☛

Weddings ☛☛

Lidö has a nice sandy beach, beautiful nature trails and an adventure path for children. Every year at the end of July, the Lidö Festival takes place offering, among other things, gladiator challenges, animal safari with the farmer, helicopter rides and music.

During the pre- and post-seasons, you have the opportunity to have an entire island at your disposition for your wedding. Get married in the nuptial grove down by the ocean, mingle in the patio area and enjoy dinner for up to 140 seated guests in the gorgeous pavilion.

Traveling to Lidö ☛☛

Conferences ☛☛

Take the Waxholm Ferry from the dock at Räfsnäs, Norrtälje or Stockholm. If you travel here in your own boat, you can dock at the guest harbor with 50 available spots and, this year, a new service facility with showers, restrooms and a laundry room. On the east side of the island, there is also a popular natural harbor.

Bring your management team or your whole company to us for a conference and team-building event! We offer lots of activities and 80 available over-night spots. The conference rooms hold 10 to 140 persons. Read more and book at www.lidovardshus.se 25

Experience culture, history and nature

SCHOOL TRIP AND CONFERENCE

If you are having a conference, a birthday celebration or are planning a school trip it is possible to rent the entire island. A lot of people also get married and invite friends and family to party in the beautiful surroundings.

“Siaröfortet” is an old coastal fortification that is located between Vaxholm and Furusund. It is at a comfortable distance from Stockholm and the combination cultural history and swimming makes it a perfect spot for all ages and generations. Siaröfortet is located on Kyrkogårdsön in Furusundsleden, about three kilometers north of Ljusterö. The construction of the well-known fortification was initiated in 1916. It was manned for the first time in 1926 but was closed again in 1939 as the coastal defense was moved to the outer parts of the archipelago. Today Siaröfortet is open to the public. It takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes to travel by boat from Stockholm. For those who happen be north of the city, and prefer to travel by car as far as possible, there is also a boat from Östanå that reaches the island in 10 minutes.

– Of course it is also possible to travel here with your own boat and to berth in our guest harbor, says Veronica Schultz at Blidösundsbolaget who runs the business on the island. Adventure play and culture For the children the fortification is an tempting adventure playground and there is plenty of space to climb, run and jump yourself tired. The adults appreciate the beautiful environment and the island’s exciting history. There are guided tours with information about the fortification’s history every day during high season.

– The fortification is untouched and everything looks just like it did when it closed. It is like the time has been standing still. Most people who come to the Siarö fortification stay over the day, but a lot of people also opt to stay the night. There are 30 beds in the youth hostel that is housed in the old military lodgings and there is an additional 20 beds in two military tents. – The youth hostel has a restaurant that is open daily during the summer and serves cold and hot dishes. ARCHIPELAGO FASHION More than Stripes and Navy Blue Look Hip With a stylish dry sack by North Sails you will look hip in every port. This sack is completely superior to other bags when packing securely for a boat trip. It works just as well on the beach as out at sea with friends. About SEK 760.

Classic maritime fashion looks chic, both at sea and in the city. Nowadays, these functional garments also come in other colors and are more fashionable than before. They’re clothes for vacation and leisure, sunshine and rain. The maritime fashion is no longer just for all-weather sailing. Over time, what we call ‘traditional sailing clothes’ has changed quite a bit. Originally, these clothes were mainly garments made to withstand rain and wind. Fast-forward some years, practical gear now developed into large collections of stylish and functional leisure attire, suited equally well for taking a walk or going for dinner as for sailing. You don’t even have to set foot on a boat to fancy cargo shorts and a striped knit shirt during the summer.

And boat shoes are great for easy slip on/slip off and work just as well in the city as out on the pier. Smart materials that keep you dry and comfortable at sea naturally function equally well in the forest or out on the golf course. Compared to fashion in general, the maritime style is characterized by the classic colors red, white and blue as well as by endless stripes, which stay in fashion season after season. In the last few years, black – which previously was a rare sight in maritime clothing lines – has become a staple in marine couture.

▲ P elle P tests its garments in the circumstances they are made to work. The company makes a promise to its customers never to compromise quality or function. It is not enough to look stylish. For example, shorts should also have a great fit and the pockets should sit just right.

▲ T o provide customers the best possible experience they must be able to move properly, regardless of where, on the boat, ski slope or golf course. Your activity directs our design.

PELLE P

Equipped for Life PelleP is a lifestyle brand offering everything from functional garments for rough sailings to stylish clothing for active leisure time. This year’s collection entails classic favorites, such as navy blue shorts, but also attire with lots of character and seasonal colors. Designer Cecilia Petterson founded Pelle P in 2007. The brand’s name originates from Cecilia’s father Pelle Petterson, one of the world’s, all-time most successful sailors and a prosperous designer. Pelle P’s clothing lines are inspired by Pelle Petterson’s lifestyle and achievements as an athlete and entail a wide range of attire, from technical garments for sailing and skiing to golf and after-sail apparel. ”Pelle P is all about maximizing the customer’s enjoyment; it’s about experience, a dedicated lifestyle and ambition; about

things that are real. We call it the True Experience and no one personifies it more accurately than Pelle Petterson.”

Färgstark säsong ☛☛

Pelle P’s clothing lines kick off in athletics and focus on people who appreciate an active lifestyle. But today, they also include everyday clothing pieces, such as, linen dress shirts, sweaters and dresses. All hold a high level of quality and breathe the same feel.

This summer, the traditional basic colors are complemented by purple and nuances of pink and orange. Feel free to match up different shades of the same color scale. Summer and sun deliver self-confidence and the wish to wear colorful clothing.

“We don’t just cater to a certain age group but to a lifestyle. Those who like Pelle P share

their lifestyle as a common denominator.”

WELCOME TO VÄRMDÖ ARCHIPELAGO

VÄRMDÖ

Nature, Beaches and Cliffs Värmdö is an archipelago municipality with beautiful nature and well-known islands, such as, Sandhamn and Grinda. We will present you a few other gems that are well worth a visit. One of the country’s fastest growing municipalities, about 43,000 inhabitants now call Värmdö their home. Many are drawn to Värmdö to live close to nature, archipelago and city. Revolving around Gustavsberg’s China Museum, Värmdö enjoys a rich history of design and culture and offers a wide variety of recreational activities and adventures – only 30 minutes from Stockholm. Prehistoric artifacts tell us that people lived on Värmdö already during the Stone Age. In 1314, Värmdö was mentioned for the first time in writing as Wermdö. The only rune stone found on Värmdö is located close to Väsby Farm’s iron-aged burial sites. 48

Discover Värmdö For young and for old, Värmdö offers many destinations well worth exploring. Suggestions:

Norra Stavsudda ☛☛ Right where you think the mid-archipelago can’t get more beautiful you will find Norra Stavsudda. Enjoying year-round ferry service, it’s a lively island with a shipyard, country store, boat gas station, kayak rentals, hovercraft manufacturing, guest pier, restaurant and bed & breakfast. Stavsudda’s store and gas station sit in a sheltered cove on the island’s east side with plenty of free boat spots for shopping or

refueling. The Midsummer fest attracts many visitors as does the festive Stavsudda Fair.

Bullerö Nature Preserve ☛☛ Encompassing 900 islands, islets and bays in between, Bullerö Nature Preserve was established in 1967 to secure the general public’s access to the outdoors and nature as well as to culturally and historically interesting environments. You can get here by boat or kayak and dock at one of the island’s many beautiful natural harbors. Bullerö Nature Preserve, operated by Stockholm County’s environmental care unit, is managed by park custodian Jan Olsén and

▲ On Värmdö you’re always close to magnificent nature.

seasonal employees. In addition to Bullerö nature preserve, they also oversee some smaller preserves and bird sanctuaries throughout the archipelago.

Björnö Nature Preserve ☛☛ Björnö Nature Preserve is located at the outermost part of Ingarö in Värmdö municipality. The preserve consists of typical archipelagic

nature, i.e. valleys of open and small-scale agricultural landscape interspersed between forests and cliffs. Situated on a peninsula, the preserve is easily accessible even without a boat. People go to Björnö to enjoy sun and swimming from cliffs as well as the nice sandy beach at Torpesand, with a view of the Nämndö Bay (Nämndöfjärden). Arrive early to ensure a spot on

a cliff or on the beach. To get there, take a bus from Slussen direction Björkviks brygga.

GRINDA

Summer in the Archipelago The light, the fresh air and nature, open to everyone. No wonders many Swedes choose to spend their vacation in the archipelago of Stockholm. On Grinda island, you will spend your vacation the way it works for you: rent your own cottage for a week or two, put up a tent or enjoy the comfort of a hotel for a couple of nights. “If you don’t own a vacation home but still want to feel like home and relax in one spot, you can rent a cottage on Grinda. Stay one week or several and go swimming, fishing and enjoy nature”, says Jan Pfister of Grinda island. In addition to the village of rental cottages there are several other options for lodging on Grinda from a nice hotel to a youth hostel and camping. There is also a beautiful guest harbor for those who want to stay in their boat. The ferry ride from Stockholm takes only about an hour to an hour and a half. 50

A Marvelous Island Grinda is a nature preserve where you can freely move around everywhere and also swim when you feel like it. The island offers a fine, shallow sandy beach – perfect for little ones – and swim-friendly rocks for the more adventurous vacationer. Abundant meadows invite you to roll out your picnic blanket. “The trip here goes through the beautiful archipelago and is part of the whole experience. For most, the feeling of being on vacation has already hit by the time they set foot on the island.

Something happens inside you when you travel over the ocean”. Animals on Grinda The animals have always been a popular feature. Since 2016, Maria Jorgensson and her family rent the farm from the Archipelago Foundation. Most of the usual farm animals are represented on the farm, from cows and horses to cats. During the summer, the animals will graze on pastures around the island and are important for keeping the landscape well maintained. During the winter, they are inside the barns and stables as well as in the fields

place for a conference because it helps the participants to be truly present, both in body and spirit.

Follow grindalantbruk on Facebook and Instagram and look for the information board down by the pier. For more information, send an email to maria@grindalantbruk.se or call +46703-012684.

Eating at Grinda Grinda is home to two popular restaurants and a café next to the general store. At Wardshuset

(“the Inn”), a stone’s throw from the guest harbor, you will find everything from the hearty Swedish Pyttipanna (a yummy hash of sorts) to exclusive dishes. In the deli, you can enjoy a quick bite of delicious food inspired by the archipelago. Your dog will be offered fresh water while you eat! A Paradise for Conferences During the high season, Grinda becomes an island full of life and vacationers, but during the preand post-seasons, the focus lies on the conference guests. At a time when everyone rushes and is pressed for time, an island away from the city is the perfect

Extend the Season For most, a visit to Grinda equals summer, but more and more tourists and conferences are finding their way to the island during spring and early fall. Starting this year, you can also ride the Waxholm Ferry to Grinda using your regular, monthly metro card during the low season.

ARTIPELAG

Art and Nature in Beautiful Harmony

 Families have a lot to explore at Artipelag. Visit the art museum, experience nature and enjoy food or pastry of highest quality.

More than ten years ago, Bjorn and Lillemor Jakobson decided to create a meeting place that they felt was missing in the archipelago. With a great interest in art they had the idea that Artipelag would not only be a place where people can meet, but also an art museum with a connection to nature. “Artipelag is an enterprise that, in a short period of time, with courage and passion and in harmony with nature, has established itself as one of the most respected art exhibition halls in the Nordic region”. That is how the justification sounded when Artipelag was awarded the Great Tourism Prize in 2017. Here you will experience the untouched archipelagic nature. A one-kilometer wooden causeway runs along the water offering a walking experience close to the water. Nordic Architecture and Design Artipelag is an aesthetic and complete experience. The building was architected by Johan Nyrén, which has a tarred façade, and on the inside there is a lot of concrete and glass. The furniture was

custom-made and in the lobby an archipelagic cliff runs all the way to the restrooms. “At Artipelag, we create our own high-quality, international exhibitions and during the summer of 2018 we will, for the first time in Sweden, showcase an exhibition about the radical Bloomsbury group that was active in the beginning of the 1900’s. There will be a lot to discover, everything from art and interior design to fashion and landscaping. We will also exhibit sculptures outside”, says Riitta Ostberg, CEO at Artipelag. Locally sourced food Artipelag offers a first-class, buffetstyle restaurant that has its own bakery and pastry shop, and the concept locally sourced food is taken seriously. For example,

the restaurant cultivates its own herbs and vegetables on the roof terrace and gets the berries and mushrooms it needs from the forest. TRAVEL DIRECTIONS ¬¬ Traveling by sea is the most beautiful way to get to Artipelag. Many choose to use the ferry service offered by Stromma Kanalbolaget from Nybrokajen and take Artipelago’s own bus service to Vasagatan for the ride back. For those who travel by car, take route 222 towards Värmdo, follow signs and park the car in the large parking lot.

▲ S kevik Farm is a large property that has its own sandy beach and offers endless possibilities to experience nature and exercise.

SKEVIKS FARM

Close to Ocean and Nature with Animals around the Corner Skevik Farm equals top quality and wonderful surroundings with ocean and nature close-by. Hens, sheep and pigs are just around the corner and make it hard to believe you are only half an hour from the city. Skevik Farm is a hotel and conference facility with 60 rooms and also available to individuals who want to enjoy the beautiful scenery for a weekend or on summer days. About three kilometers from Gustavsberg’s city center, with views of the ocean and inlet to Stockholm, the location is simply fantastic.

For those who like physical activity this spot is perfect. There are both indoor and outdoor gyms, small micro gyms close to the hotel rooms as well as running trails and lots of swimmable water. Bicycles, kayaks and row boats are available for guests to explore both land and sea.

“We offer rooms for double or single occupancy as well as some larger rooms where families can add a roll-away bed”, says Ragnar Flink who operates Skevik Farm together with his family.

“Considering the good foundation we have here, we have seized the opportunity and invested in physical activity. It is important to us and we would like to promote exercise to others.”

54

Truly Locally Sourced Food The kitchen at Skevik Farm has a great reputation and offers lots of locally sourced and organic foods as well as some ingredients that are produced right here. The kitchen has access to a large vegetable garden providing produce during summer and fall as well as a large farm. “We have pigs, sheep and hens that stroll around the area, creating a very rural feeling and it gives us the opportunity to serve our guests locally sourced meat products”.

Historical Environment The history of Skevik Farm goes all the way back to the 1600’s. The munk cottage is the oldest, preserved, in-use building in Gustavsberg. Originally it was a farm, but during the 1700 and 1800’s it was home to the cult ‘Skevikians’. In more recent times, the farm was used as a recreation site for workers of the china factory Gustavsberg.

Exercise and Relax No matter if your day has been calm and relaxing or filled to the brim with physical activity, an evening sauna session is equally lovely. The hotel houses two large sauna facilities and one large relax area. The sauna is, of course, mere steps away from the swimming pier. Read more and book at www.skevik.se

HOTEL BLÅ BLOM

The Flink family also operates Hotel Blå Blom situated in the middle of the old Gustavsberg harbor. The hotel holds 60 overnights guests and is housed in the oldest buildings of the old china factory from the mid 1800’s. You will be staying at a convenient distance from the city – it takes just under 30 minutes to get to there. www.blablom.se

Afterwards, we suggest you climb the 130 steps up to the tower and enjoy the spectacular view. And don’t miss the new additions in the museum! On a clear day, you can see Hammarbybacken (ski slope) and the Globe Arena from the top of the tower. If you are brave enough to try the fort’s newest attraction, ‘Walk the Plank’, you don’t even have to descend the 130 steps to get back down. You may choose to jump 18 meters instead; it is perfectly safe but surely an adrenaline rush. “You’re going to free fall for a brief moment, but there won’t be a jerky tug. The jump slowly decelerates so will you land on your feet in the court. You have to be at least seven years old to jump but no advance booking is necessary”, said Ego Persson, Fort Manager. 58

Can You Escape? For those who don’t like heights or who simply want some more fun at the fort there is also an attraction called Kastellet (Fort) Escape. It’s not about jumping, but about being locked up. No advance booking is necessary. “We have organized rooms with different themes and the group that gets locked up will have to solve a mystery in order to get out. Some rooms fit families and others work better for adult participants, e.g. from a conference group.” History Comes Alive At the fort, you will find the largest museum of the archipelago.

Tickets are 80 SEK for adults and free for children under 18. This year, we will open a new movie exhibit and phase 1 of the exhibit Sjöminan (Naval Mine). As part of a new, unique cooperation between our museum and the Marine Museum in Karlskrona, we show the movie U137, about the Soviet submarine that ran aground in Sweden in 1981. Get to the Fort You can get to Vaxholm by car, bus or one of the many boats that dock at Vaxholm during the summer season. The fort is located right outside Vaxholm; the short ferry ride from Vaxholm to the

fort takes only a minute. The route is serviced by a cable ferry that leaves once every 15 minutes between 10am and 10pm. A ticket with return costs 40 SEK for adults and is free for children and adolescents. If you arrive in your own boat there are about 10 spots in the guest harbor.

Food at the Fort Bistro Kastellet offers homemade pastries, waffles and yummy lunches with ingredients from local suppliers. This year, there is also a patio with service at the guest harbor so you can watch the boats while having coffee. If you’d rather bring your own picnic there are great grassy areas to roll out your picnic blanket.

STRAIGHT FROM THE CITY! ¬¬

New this year: S/S Stockholm docks by the fort so you can travel direct from Nybrokajen in Stockholm to the fort during the high season (June 26 to August 19).. Read more and book at www.kastellet.com

CONFERENCE AND KICKOFF Waxholm Hotel offers great opportunities to hold conferences for groups up to 40 persons.

WAXHOLMS HOTEL

Stay and Dine in the Archipelago Capital

Waxholm Hotel enjoys a magical location right by the pier where the archipelago ferries dock. The hotel offers lovely rooms, a beautiful dining room and a casual bistro for those who like to relish the best in life. Waxholm Hotel has a long history since opening in 1903. Back then, the hotel was managed by the particularly driven Augusta Karlsson, who came from meager circumstances in Vetlanda. Her appetite for venture led her to work for the ferry company until she eventually operated the steadily growing and prosperous hotel. “We feel as if Augusta is with us, right here in the building. Our hotel has an inspiring story and we all have responsibility to carry it forward”, said Tobias Ekman, current owner of the hotel. Dinner with a View The hotel restaurant is located on the second floor, is open year round and features a magnificent view of the bay and fort. Many choose to reserve a table by the

window to celebrate a birthday or other festivity, but it is quite alright to stop in on a whim. The dining room is listed in the White Guide for the second year in a row; foodies will be pleased. “In our dining room we offer the highest quality service and food. In the summer, we serve a classic smorgasbord (buffet); á la carte you will find everything from freshly fried Baltic herring to fish stew to slow-cooked steak. We also have vegetarian options.”

☛☛

Staycation in Style

With its 42 charming rooms, Waxholm Hotel is a lovely boutique hotel in the archipelago. It offers multiple getaway packages, turning to Epicureans who appreciate food and wine in a gorgeous setting.

Summer Feel ☛☛ at Lilla Strand A few years ago, the nightclub Kabyssen was replaced by a new concept: a casual and elegant archipelago bistro with lively entertainment. Here, you can sit midst greenery and enjoy casual food such as hamburgers, caesar salad or a mixed BBQ plate. TRAVEL TO VAXHOLM ¬¬

You can catch the ferry from Nybrokajen or take bus 670 to get to Vaxholm. If you travel in your own boat, there is a guest harbor a stone’s throw from the hotel.

GLASHUSET

Central and Sunny Archipelago Spot

ENJOY REFRESHING AND WARMING DRINKS OR A THREE COURSE DINNER AT GLASHUSET.

Whether you are a Stockholmian or a tourist chances are you will at some point during summer stroll along the water on one of the city’s most prominent boulevards, Strandvägen. It is the perfect time to stop for a drink in the sun or a good meal at Glashuset located at Pier 18. Glashuset reopened under new management during spring. After remodeling it is a homey, yet festive, and inviting meeting spot. The location is fantastic and only a few meters from the water. During summer, the flowering patios with views of Old Town, Skeppsholmen and Djurgården swim in sunshine from morning to night. On the roof terrace, 62

elevated by four meters, you can catch the last rays of the evening. ”The location is simply unique; city pulse meets the charm of the archipelago”, said Glashuset’s new owners, Christos Neo and Sussi Leuhusen. The food concept was designed by award-winning chef Douglas

Fagerman who in 2016 won the Olympic gold together with the junior national chef team. “The idea is to create a restaurant with neighborhood feel and consistently solid food at a reasonable price. If you just want a beer and snacks you are just as welcome as if you come in for a three-course dinner.”

Visit Skärgården here Restaurant Glashuset and Pier 18 is also the physical ‘home’ of Visit Skärgården. By the entrance you will find information on archipelagic lodging, activities and

restaurants as well as free copies of the archipelago magazine. During summer of 2018, we will share some exciting news at Visit Skärgården’s tourist information booth, so keep your eyes open!

BOATING

In the Archipelago

For the boat people it just isn’t summer unless you get to spend some time on the water. But you don’t have to have a motor- och sail boat of your own in order to have a great boating experience. Stockholm actually has an extensive public transport system in the archipelago that allows you to feel the wind in your hair and to experience a large number of wonderful places. It is also possible to rent a boat for a number of days or weeks.   The archipelago is full of wonderful secret spots such as beaches, smooth rocks and nature trails.

The law of common access and The Archipelago Foundation contribute to making the archipelago highly accessible to the public. But there are also a number of privately owned guest harbors. Here in the magazine you can read about some of the beautiful natural- and guest harbors that are worth a visit. Guest harbors offer more service and in the natural harbors you will vacation in a more Spartan fashion. On several of the Archipelago Foundation’s islands there are saunas that take the summer feeling to the next level. 73

Safe and Relaxed at Sea with Sweboat

Embracing the boating lifestyle is an investment both in time and money. Thus, it is essential to feel safe as you keep learning about boating. Sweboat, the national association of the boating industry, assists newcomers with inspiration, safety and support. The boating lifestyle truly contributes to joy in life. But everything will be even more enjoyable if all goes smooth and when you find what works for you. What kind of boat fits your current situation the best; what are your expectations; what do you need to take the first step; and, equally important, what do you do if something goes wrong? There are many questions, making it convenient to have a single access point to answers from trustworthy and reliable companies who know their trade. Promoting Safer Boating Sweboat’s operations cover numerous areas, the main goal being promotion of the boating lifestyle. Partly, it means making sure that association members hold a certain level of knowledge as well as

supporting quality and confident purchasing for customers. Across the country, over 400 companies are affiliated with Sweboat. Those are companies and organizations you can trust when you need services or want to buy a boat or other marine products. “Our members are the best and most reliable companies in the industry. When you use their services or buy their products, you can feel confident knowing we stand behind you. Our requirements entail, for example, that member companies follow consumer protection laws, sell CE accredited boats and certified used boats when reselling”, said Mats Eriksson, CEO at Sweboat. Our members also carry liability insurance and follow environ-

mental policies as well as ARN’s recommendations in case of a legal dispute. Life in boating is wonderful, but if problems arise those should also be easy to navigate. Sweboat does all it can to create an industry-friendly environment but also to provide consumers safety and confidence in all aspects of owning a boat. To provide the best tips and advice, Sweboat has developed the website Upptackbatlivet.se, where you will find lots and lots of information to get started or to make the most of boating once you are on your way. SWEDISH CRUISING ASSOCIATION’S

Wants to have the best Swedish WEBSITE FOR PREPARING A SHORT or LONG BOAT JOURNEYS.

Community and Support

For almost 100 years, the Swedish Cruising Association’s goal has been to energize tourism and extended boat trips at sea. The purpose is to create a happy, active boating community, a strong sense of togetherness and to share experiences for safer boating. The Swedish Cruising Association exists for those who love sail and motor boats, ocean and archipelago. It offers courses, sailing camps, lessons and journeys for all who want more knowledge and, especially, safety at sea. Per Berkhuizen explained that courses take place all year round but it becomes most evident during the summer when sailing schools arrange camps. At the day camp Kryssis, the youngest ones learn to operate a dinghy and, at Malma Kvarn on Värmdö, there is an overnight camp where hundreds of children age 10 to 17 learn boating and seamanship. Rising 8 and 9 graders may join an educational sailing where they practice maneuvers and navigation. This summer, Gratia will be

docked in Stockholm and perform both short and long sailings. “It is so important to get the kids out on the sea – they are our future”, said Per. Today, The Swedish Cruising Association operates nine public harbors, 220 anchor buoys, numerous pilot reference points and navigation markers and finances 30 nautical route markers, which are so important for leisure boats. As a member, you will receive a yearbook and this summer the Skipper’s Handbook will be released. Whether you are a novice or experienced, it is the best handbook you’ll ever know and answers most questions. The Cruising Association has invested lots of resources in its web presence.

It wants to have the best Swedish website for preparing, planning and organizing short or long boat journeys. Additionally, association members appreciate the organized, communal boat journeys that provide families a great experience at sea, whether you have a sail boat or a motor boat. Experienced leaders prepare routes and overnight harbors, make sure help is available and organize activities. “In all, every year a total of 40-50 communal trips are organized near and far. This summer, fourteen trips will originate from Stockholm”, said Per. Read more at www.sxk.se 77

❦ THE LAW OF COMMON ACCESS AND THE ARCHIPELAGO FOUNDATION CREATE A UNIQUE AVAILABILITY.

NATURALLY COMFORTABLE

Guest Harbors A guest harbor is a harbor with slips that you as a visitor can use temporarily for a fee. In a guest harbor there is typically access to drinking water, a kiosk, fuel, waste disposal, toilet, shower or sauna, and an emergency phone. The Northern Archipelago – Öregrund Guest Harbor The guest harbor is located at the heart of Öregrund and is open year round and offers full service from the first of June to the end of August. There are 60 slips that cost SEK 50 for the day or SEK 200 for 24 hours. The Middle Archipelago – KSSS Guest Harbor on Sandhamn The guest harbor on Sandhamn consists of three floating docks with landings in between that sit right in front of Seglarhotellet. 78

It is open from the last weekend of April to the last weekend in October. There are 150 slips. On Lökholmen there is an additional 200 slips, and a ferryboat will take you over to Sandhamn.

part that you reach via Persholmen is usually calmer and it is also easier to find a spot there during high season. In the harbor area there is a reception, kiosk, café and ice cream parlor.

The Southern Archipelago – Utö Guest Harbor Utö is located in the outer archipelago in the South of Stockholm and there are 250 slips in the guest harbor. The harbor consists of the northern and the southern part. In the northern part there is a gas station and the southern

Mälaren – Jungfrusund’s Marina Jungfrusund’s guest harbor is located by Vårbyfjärden on Ekerö’s south eastern part on the shore side of Jungfruholmarna. Here there are 30 guest slips and full-service from the first of July.

Natural harbor at Stora Kalholmen

Natural Harbors A natural harbor is a place that with its protected location makes it suitable for leisure boats to berth. It is free of charge and there is typically no service available. There are however outdoor toilets and garbage disposals in some of the natural harbors. The Northern Archipelago – Idö Today Idö has no permanent population and the island with its lovely nature and cultural landscape is a popular vacation spot. It is possible to raise a tent on most parts of Idö and there are natural harbors in Idöflaten and Idskär. Drinking water is available in two places on Idöflaten and outdoor toilets and garbage disposal are available in connection to both of the natural harbors. On the island there are hiking trails and paths. The Middle Archipelago – Stora Kalholmen Stora Kalholmen was The Archipelago Foundation’s first land purchase. It is a popular place to

visit for those who enjoy silence, nature and jumping from cliffs into the ocean. The natural harbor is situated in a well-protected lagoon in between the islands. On the island there is a youth hostel with basic standard and a sauna. The Southern Archipelago – Fjärdlång Fjärdlång is a popular island among the boating people. There are nice natural harbors that are suitable for just about any wind conditions and a smaller guest harbor. On the island there is also a youth hostel, cottage rental, campsite and a kiosk. Fjärdlångs nature preserve is a typical example of archipelago nature

and also includes the islands of Ängsön-Marskär, LångholmenBockholmen. Ridö-Sundbyholm’s archipelago The nature preserve Ridö-Sundbyholm is located in Mälaren’s western part between Granfjärden and Blacken and consists of about 160 islands and islets. You reach them via your own boat. On Sundbyholm’s island there is a dock on the southeastern side of the island and it is also popular to berth at Räfsgarn where there are nice beaches, rocks and a barbecue site. If you enjoy bird watching a visit to the preserve is highly recommended, as there are 100s of breeding species of birds here. 79

ORNÖ

Typical Archipelagic Nature and Culture

Ornö Island provides calm, comfort and relaxation but never feels boring. This island always offers fun things to do for all likings.

Although the island is multifaceted it is not exploited by tourism, providing a more genuine experience. Year-round inhabitants, tourists and summer residents, all contribute to the lovely atmosphere. Being the largest island in Stockholm’s southern archipelago, you can get to Ornö in 30 minutes by car ferry from Dalarö or three hours by Waxholm ferry from Stockholm. The archipelago sur86

rounding Ornö itself encompasses several beautiful islands which you can easily visit, e.g., Kymendö, Fjällång and Huvudskär. ”Ornö is an important part of the North-South ferry route. We worked tenaciously to bring it here. It provides direct ferry routes from Sandhamn and Nämdö but also continues to Utö and Nynäshamn. You can get to get to Ornö by car, but in my opinion the archipelago travels

Since last year there are several new living opportunities – a newly opened archipelago hotel and an exclusive B&B more easily without a car”, said Anders Willborg, co-owner of Ornö Elpodtaxi. Ornö is called a paradise for biking. The island is 14 kilometers long so there are great biking opportunities. Hiking is another good choice or fetching a Podtax, a much appreciated taxi service that started last year and helps guests get around the island. Your taxi ride can even include

Ornö Skärgårdshotell

a guided tour. Or, you can ask it to let you out wherever you want so you can hike back. ”If you would like to experience fantastic islands with the best cliffs in all of Sweden it is easy to access the neighboring islands, e.g. Huvudskär, for a day trip”. Ornö is such a great combination of nature, culture and the classic features of an archipelagic island. As of last year, there are also new lodging options on the island, both the newly opened Ornö Skärgårdshotell at Brunnsviken as well as the exclusive B&B in the wing of Sundby Säteri. ”Nowadays, you can stay right in the historical environment of Sundby Säteri. The wing boasts incredible interior design midst exciting and exclusive environment.”

Ornö Museum

New destinations are also being created. One of them is Telegrafberget – the southern archipelago’s highest view point, 60 meters above sea level – where you can admire the views of Dalarö, Utö and Huvudskär from a new tower, built right where the old optical telegraph used to stand. The beautiful ruins in the middle of Sundby nature preserve is also a delightful destination. The island’s center is situated around Kyrkviken where, among other things, you will find a kiosk, gas station, restaurant, bakery, folk museum and Ornö Museum. ”It is just gorgeous here, with the church and restaurant by the water. The location within the archipelago is great. If you have a boat, Kyrkviken offers

an excellent harbor, especially when the sea is rough just outside of it. As of recently, we also have a gas station here again”. So, if you are looking for a lovely and lively destination in the archipelago, with room for both activity and local identity, where you can buy fresh fish on Saturdays and visit farms to buy eggs and vegetables, you have found the right place. History buffs may also enjoy the exhibition at Ornö Museum about the sweet water lakes of Ornö. They offer interesting history – and great swimming opportunities.

ÅRSTA BEACH

A place for swimming & recreation

With a hilly landscape a big part boast as an terrace above the beach.

When Årsta Beach was first created the concept of a no-work Saturday wasn’t even a thing and most people didn’t own a car. Later on, the motto became to give blue collar and middle class workers in the metropolitan city access to recreation and leisure through closeness with nature. The founders, HSB and Årsta Beach, rented out small, simple and practical cottages as a contribution to improve people’s general health. Today, Årsta Beach Association operates the area for visitors who wish to escape the stressful city for a while. You will find Årsta Beach outside Västerhaninge, a calm location with a vast sandy beach, relaxing and welcoming for all. From Utö Island, ferries transport those who like to arrive by boat. Årsta Beach is a cozy, little summer town with some yearround residents, many summer residences and lots of tourists, full of anticipation. Once you take a dip in the water from the vast beach, a sense of vacation and calmness appears. The beach also offers piers, diving tower and a

concession stand as well as a store and restaurant by the town square. Nature and City on Equal Terms When plans to create Årsta Beach first formed, people were fascinated because so much untouched land was available close to Stockholm; just over 300 acres of raw land along Horsfjärden. Since its founding in 1929, the Årsta Beach area has been characterized as the thrill that happens when city and nature meet on equal terms. Because the focus was on the landscape, the vision emerged to put nature first and construction second. The landscape is still small-scale, hilly and a large part of it flaunts as a terrace above the beach. The first thing you will encounter is the town square that

connects the little leisure village. Stockholmians consider this place an oasis where vacation comes to life. If you don’t have a lot of time or you’d rather spend summer without too many plans, Årsta Beach will always be a place where you can shift into a lower gear. Stroll along the water where the varying, barren landscape alternates with pine forests, rocks, reed and sand. Take a dip, hang on the pier or fish in peace and quiet. Leaving the city rush behind to inhale a much needed dose of archipelagic vacation, if only for a brief moment, makes Årsta Beach a true summer gem. Red more at www.arsta-havsbad.se 89

Tyresta National Park also appeals to bird enthusiasts who can visit the bird sanctuary lake ▲ To learn more about the national park our tip is the ’Guided tour and with its watch tower introduction to Tyresta national park’. You will find more information and tour times and observe nature inside the House of National Parks and on the web. Photo: Tyresta nationalpark, Peder Curman in action.

TYRESTA NATIONAL PARK

Unique Primeval Forest Close to the City Tyresta national park and nature preserve is located 12 miles south of Stockholm. Getting there is easy by bus and it offers something for everyone: Tyresta Farm with animals and tours; a nature exhibit and café; impressive primeval forest trails and a bird sanctuary lake. The first people came to Tyresta already during the Stone Age. About 10,500 years ago, the postglacial rebound caused the first mountain peaks to rise up through the ocean in the form of islands. Kayak-bound seal and seabird huntsmen found their way there. “Traces have been found at various sea levels and each represents a different set of years in history”, said Peder Curman who works as a nature guide at Tyresta national park. During the 12th century, Tyresta village was established. Back 90

then, the forest was a common interest and used as such, that is, in concert. At the end of the 1800’s, the forest was divided and logged at an increasing pace. But there was this one woman, Emma Sofia Dahlgren, who refused to sell the lumber rights to her property. Thanks to her, we still have the primeval forest that is left today. “A number of lucky circumstances saved the forest. In the 1920’s, Torsten Krüger bought the land and was planning to design a hunting park. After the Krüger

Crash in 1936, the City of Stockholm purchased the land to create a recreation area where city folks could hike and ski. As late as in the 1970’s, there were plans to build a nuclear plant. But owing to the action group ‘Save Tyresta’, where organizations such as ornithologists and the Outdoors Association participated, the primeval forest was preserved. The County Board made it a preserve in 1986, and in 1993, the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency purchased the

remaining primeval forest and turned it into a national park. Tyresta National Park is Sweden’s largest primeval forest south of the river Dalälven. A primeval forest by definition has never been logged or cultivated which allows it to form a center of biological diversity. It grows full of variation with a unique biome for flora and fauna and provides people enriched enjoyment of the primeval forest. Läs mer på www.tyresta.se

National Park Facts ☛☛ An area is converted to a national park in order to preserve typical Swedish nature in its raw state. The objective is that all types of nature should become represented, e.g. a specific flora or bird life. A nature preserve can be a lot smaller, cultural land, privately owned or even forestry.

Rules to Protect Unique Nature The rules in a national park are often stricter than in a nature preserve and commonly involve fire and camping. When you visit a national park or a preserve it is essential to read the signs with local rules. Are you allowed to bike? Does the dog have to stay on a leash? On the web, at tyresta.se, there is a downloadable map and a summary of Tyresta regulations. You can also call and check the current fire risk at 08-7410010 and find out if making a fire is allowed in any of the prearranged campground fire pits. 91

For those who treasure delicious beverages there are many options from the local brewery as well as gems from various micro-breweries. “We also offer a delightful wine list with great options from many corners of the world”.

Relaxed Ambience and Tasty Classics The á la carte menu offers some timeless classics that people keep coming back for, year after year. You will always find Toast Kroken which is the restaurant’s own version of Toast Skagen (a shrimp sandwich) and Biff Rydberg (a fancy meat hash). “During lunch, you can order our Baltic herring with puréed potatoes and melted butter. It is a very popular meal”. Everything is made from scratch. If you order a pre-dinner cocktail you will receive a carefully crafted drink. The motto is ‘100 percent’. Apart from offering solid food, the restaurant attracts with its homey and welcoming atmosphere.

“It is pleasant here; we have an open door policy and lots of fun. Our staff has fun while working which transplants to our guests”. This summer, the atmosphere will be enhanced by a live pianist, who will play relaxing background music three nights a week, from July 9 through August 12. Every season, the business adds something new to its repertoire. During Linnea’s three years at Restaurant Kroken, more and more visitors have found their way there. “If you travel by train or car you probably don’t see us right away, but by now people find us – we have found our spot on the map!” Läs mer och boka på www.restaurangkroken.se 93

EKERÖ

Heritage and Nature Ekerö municipality is a group of islands in Lake Mälaren, also called the Mälarö Islands. These beautiful islands offer many outdoors adventures, but Ekerö is also a treasure for those interested in archeology and history. For example, you will find eight medieval churches here and multiple castles. Ekerö proudly is home to two of Sweden’s world heritage sites and visited by tens of thousands of people each year. The Drottningholm castle was built in 1662 and, together with Kina castle and Drottningholm’s Castle Theater, it was coined Sweden’s first world heritage site in 1991. Swedes mainly know the castle as the residence of the royal family. The second UNESCO world heritage site is the Viking Town Birka-Hovgården. Located on Adelsö, Hovgården was a royal home from the middle of the 700s to about 1300. Here, you will find ruins of large Viking houses as well the medieval castle, Alsnöhus. There are two dried out harbors, one from the Viking Era and one from the Middle Ages. Adelsö 102

church from the 12th century is situated next to the heritage site. DIRECTIONS ¬¬ Ekerö is located right outside Stockholm. You can travel there by boat, car or bus.

Historical Churches

On the Ekerö islands, there are no less than eight churches from the 12th century. Two of the most popular ones to visit are Rundtornskyrkan on Mundö, with a baptismal font from the 1200’s, as well as Hilleshögs church on Färingsö. Munsö Church Munsö church sits on the northern part of the island and was built

during the latter part of the 12th century. Its round shape makes it different from other churches of the same era. It is one of only thirteen round churches. The church was presumably built as a farm and defense church for the arch bishop of Uppsala. The architecture is believed to stem from the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem and also from Charlemagne’s palace chapel in Aachen. The round shape symbolizes eternity and God’s love that embraces the universe. The church also symbolizes contrasts: heaven and hell; light and darkness, life and death. Services are usually held every other Sunday and there are 205 seats.

Hilleshögs Church Hilleshögs church on Färingsö is a medieval church from the 1170’s and seats 75 people. The church and its slender western tower belongs to a form of early Romanesque church architecture, which in Uppland originated in St. Per’s church in Sigtuna. The church still has its original floor plan but the sacristy and porch

were added during the 1400’s. There are frescos from the end of the 13th century as well as one of the oldest pictures of St. Birgitta in Sweden. The church is home to an unusually large number of medieval wooden sculptures and as well as an altar broidery from around 1490. Hilleshögs church is also known because it (probably) has the

HERE: SWEDEN’S (PROBABLY) SMALLEST CHURCH ORGAN

smallest church organ in all of Sweden. The organ, which has four chords, was built by Jonas Ekengren in 1773 and was encased in a beautiful Rococo-era cabinet with ornamentations made of papier mâché. Read more at www.ekero.se

BIRKA

Experience Viking Life!

DROP-IN WEDDING DAY AT BIRKA AUGUST 25!

During the last years, the interest for the Viking Era has significantly increased. At Birka, the history buff will get his (or her) appetite for history and archeology satisfied – even if you haven’t taken Viking 101. The season runs from April 28 to September 23, offering many new and exciting attractions this year. Founded in the 750’s, Birka is called Sweden’s first town. The little island in the middle of Lake Mälaren became the most important trade and craftsman’s hub in mid-Sweden. It was also part of the web of Nordic trade routes. Today, Birka is a popular place to visit. 104

“Birka is unique because it has remained unchanged. Nothing has been built on top of the old remnants. A true cultural treasure. This year many new things will happen: from food options to being able to experience the life of a Viking”, says Veronica Bjorkman, Destination Manager at Birka Viking Town.

Seminars ☛☛ During the low season, visitors can enjoy Author Days at Saturdays and on Sundays; those who would like to immerse themselves further can participate in seminars.

Wellness Weekend ☛☛ Did you know that even the Vikings had their ways of staying healthy? Enjoy yoga classes and mindfulness exercises as well as rowing a Viking ship. Also, enjoy the beautiful nature a bit longer than during a regular day trip.

Children and Vikings ☛☛ at Birka In 2018, “Children’s Birka” takes place between June 25 and July 8, with the theme runes and rune stones. Subsequently, “Vikings on Birka” will commence and run until August 5, where the Viking age quarters will be populated by

Vikings showing their arts and crafts. You will most certainly have the opportunity to try the crafts yourself as well as watch the Viking ships.

Drop-In Wedding ☛☛ If you dream of getting married in Viking fashion, wait no more! On August 25, Birka offers a Drop-In Wedding Day, church or civil ceremony. The ceremony can also be inspired by Old Norse tradition. During the Viking age, a gothi (a type of priest) was present but the whole wedding party would take part in the ceremony. Just like back in the day, a horn full of ale will be passed around.

 You get to Birka by boat: with Strömma from Stadshusbron in Stockholm, Mariefred, Härjarö or Hovgården on Adelsö; steam boat Ejdern from Södertälje; boat company Mälarstaden from Västerås. If you arrive in your own boat, the guest harbor has many parking spots.

Project Korshamn ☛☛ If all goes according to plan, a large public excavation of a hitherto unexplored area will kick off in 2019. It will provide guests to the island with an opportunity to get close to the archeologists and to ask them questions.

Wild Boar Party ☛☛ Restaurant Sarimner has further developed its cooperation with Martin “E-type” Erikson as well as continued its focus on sustainability and local farming. During all Saturdays in July, in cooperation with the royal court’s huntsman, the restaurant will offer a Wild Boar Party with live music at Drottningholm. Read more at www.birkavikingastaden.se

SKOKLOSTER CASTLE

A Real Treasure

EXCITING history and beautiful details which is hard to find on other castles

Breathtakingly interesting history, yoga, knight tournaments and baroque dance. All this and lots more is available to you this summer – at Sweden’s most well-preserved castle. Skokloster Castle is the largest private palace ever built in Sweden and surprises every time you see it. You will find this cultural gem in a gorgeous location at Lake Mälaren. The first visit is usually overwhelming, not only thanks to whole floor levels filled with magnificent, preserved treasures from past times, but also due to the splendid surroundings and the cozy café where waffles rule. The castle is characterized by its four towers and pompous façade next to Lake Mälaren’s beach. Inside the castle walls, you will find one of northern Europe’s most well-preserved baroque locales, a unique place with lots to explore. Count and Field Marshal Carl Gustav Wrangel had the castle built on the property 106

where he was born – Skokloster. The location, right off the water route between Stockholm and Uppsala, was perfect for making an imprint on the surroundings with an extravagant palace. Three-hundred and fifty years after Wrangel’s death, Skokloster Castle is still the largest private palace ever built in Sweden. The castle parades its 78 rooms and 50,000 artifacts from the 17th to 19th centuries. Unique Details and Enticing Events In the castle, there are details that cannot be found in other castles. Among the thousands of artifacts

that Wrangel brought, most are still there, a very unusual and impressive occurrence. Even the interior surprises; the walls tell stories from history, appreciated both by Swedes and tourists. When Wrangel passed away in 1676 the castle was not yet finished. In the banquet hall, the so called incomplete hall, tools still sit just the way the workers left them when they heard of Wrangel’s death. Apart from Wrangel’s imprint, castle lords from subsequent time periods have also left their tracks in the form of interiors and artifacts – furniture, paintings, fabrics, glass, china and weapons.

▲ “An incredibly well-preserved baroque castle. Knowledgeable and friendly tour guides enhanced the guided tour as well as the individual viewing afterwards. Well worth a visit.” – Annika Tännström, guest.

Careful details are everywhere at Skokloster Castle. Visitors also recommend the café which is a perfect addition to your visit. Definitely don’t miss stopping at the little brick church from the 13th century, located along the road leading up to the castle.

This summer, a number or events will take place, such as, the Empire Ball where you will be taken back in time to a magical evening in 1818 when Count Brahe arranged a ball. A baroque dance performance will let you experience dances of the 17th

century. There will also be knight tournaments, a Medieval Festival and a yoga weekend retreat in the lovely castle environment. Read more www.skoklostersslott.se
