At the turn of the 20th century, early Danish-American settlers had a vision— to find a place in California where land was plentiful a heritage could prosper under the year-round g

Solvang’s locale, the Santa Ynez Valley, has been inhabited by humans for about 10,000 years. The Chumash, the first people, were peaceful huntergatherers renowned for intricate basket weaving and building plank canoes.
Spanish missionaries founded Mission Santa Inés, now on the edge of Solvang’s village area. Named for Saint Agnes (Inés in Spanish), it is 19th in the chain of 21 missions established in Spain’s Alta California.
The grist mill (for corn & wheat) and fulling mill (for cleansing wool cloth) were built near Mission Santa Inés (the future site of Solvang Mission Mills State Historic Park). In 1821, Mexico achieved independence from Spain. California, as part of Mexican territory, was no longer under Spanish rule.
On September 9, 1850, California became the 31st state in the United States. In 1858, the first stagecoach traversed the Santa Ynez Valley.
On October 1, 1910, the DanishAmerican Colony Co. was incorporated in California. The search for suitable land began under the leadership of Rev. Benedict Nordentoft, Rev. Jens M. Gregersen and Professor Peder Pedersen Hornsyld, Danish-American educators from the Midwest.
On Jan.23, the Danish-American Colony Co. bought 9,000+ acres of Rancho San Carlos de Jonata for $75,000 and named it “Solvang”, First folk school completed in November (473 Alisal Rd., now Bit O’ Denmark restaurant)
Atterdag College (successor to Solvang’s original folk school) built. It followed principles of Danish folk schools, known as “schools for life” stressing character development and personal enlightenment.
Bethania Evangelical Lutheran Church, 603 Atterdag Road, was built in the architectural style of the Bishop Grundtvig churches in Denmark. Dedicated on July 8, Bethania is still a vibrant community institution today.

grocery, lumber yard, creamery, bakery, and other enterprises. In this paradise, the settlers carried on Danish traditions of language, folk dancing, music, and cuisine. Volunteer organizations promoting philanthropy and cross-cultural friendships such as Dania Lodge, Danish Brotherhood, Danish Sisterhood, Danish Days Foundation and Rebild Park Society emerged and today still reflect the town’s giving spirit. Midcentury, after the conclusion of World War II, idyllic Solvang was “discovered”
by the media and described as a “spotless Danish village that blooms like a rose” and enticed travelers to experience it for themselves. Now in the 21st century, Solvang’s 5,000+ residents of many cultures still continue to enjoy the same traditions as the founders envisioned— embracing the warm, sunny weather, authentic Danish cuisine, hospitality, and old-world charm—while welcoming friends, family and visitors from around the world to share the joys of “the Danish Capital of America.”

In 1936, Solvang celebrated its 25th anniversary with a 3-day festival and a tradition was born-“Danish Days” held annually on the third weekend of September. In 1939, Danish royalty Crown Prince Frederik and Princess Ingrid were welcomed to Solvang.
Saturday Evening Post magazine published a major article with photos heralding Solvang as “Little Denmark.” Visitors come to experience the Danish-American cuisine, culture and hospitality.
Danish street names were adopted. Structures were built or remodeled in the Danish provincial style. Roofs were made of simulated thatch, tiles or copper; walls half-timbered; stained glass windows and decorative ironwork added. Wooden storks perched on roofs for good luck.
In 1960, Princess Margrethe (now Queen Margrethe II of Denmark) visited; she returned in 1976. In 1961, Solvang celebrated its Golden Jubilee with 3 days of festivities.
The wine industry emerged. In 1974, dedicated community members built 700-seat outdoor Solvang Festival Theater in 58 days; still in proud use today. In 1976, official authorized replica of the “Little Mermaid” statue edicated at Mission rive & Alisal Road.
On May 1, Solvang established its charter and became legally recognized as a California city with an authorized image of the Little Mermaid on the seal.
Old Mission Santa Inés designated a National Historic Landmark and continues as an active parish church today.
Solvang awarded “Preserve America Community” by the national Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, one of only 30 communities so honored in California.

Essential Solvang g Solvang like the friendly smiles, deep roots, civic pride and generosity of its locals. Here are just a few of the many fascinating folks you may encounter in this big-hearted small town.
Bent Olsen Danish Baker and More The beckoning aromas of cinnamon, spice and fresh-baked breads fill the air at Olsen’s Danish Village Bakery, where fourth-generation baker Bent Olsen has been turning out mouthwatering Danish pastries, butter cookies, almond butter rings, strudel, kringles, cakes and much more for forty years. “The recipes are pretty much the same as my grandfather’s. We use modern machinery, but as far as the recipes go, it’s the same,” says Bent, “We keep the old Danish bakery tradition alive.” Three other Danish bakeries in town —Mortensen’s Danish Bakery, Danish Mill Bakery and Solvang Bakery— also keep up the tantalizing customs. While growing up, Bent worked at his family’s bakery in Denmark. He came to Solvang in 1965 and soon met and married his wife Susy, who still serves customers at Olsen’s. “Solvang is a considerably better place today than when I came to town, says Bent, the founders of Solvang businesses had a great vision. Solvang looks more and more like an old town in Denmark. But Solvang’s a real town—people make a living, raise a family. I love Solvang and its history. I wouldn’t live anyplace else.” Bent and his family also own the Solvang Inn & Cottages and the Red Viking Restaurant and he serves on the board of the Santa Ynez Valley Visitors Association. He nurtures his roots with membership in all the Danish cultural organizations and by chatting in Danish with contented customers when he isn’t working the bakery’s ovens. “Not a day goes by when I don’t speak Danish,” reveals Bent. And what about those pastries? With blue eyes sparkling, the tall, thin Dane says,“I eat my wares every day!”

ne can easily see why, gazing at panoramic Valley views of sun-drenched, oak-dotted hills and well-kept vineyards with a backdrop of so-blue-you-could-touch-it sky. Erik and his brother Hans, along with their wives, live on about 600 acres of Rancho San Carlos de Jonata, an original Mexican land grant. Erik, Hans and their cousin Peter Gregersen have retained this precious parcel from the original 9,000 acres that was purchased in 1911 by their grandfather, Reverend Jens M. Gregersen, along with partners Reverend Benedict Nordentoft and Peder Hornsyld.

The dream of the three Danish-American educators was to establish a Danish community and folk school on the West Coast. Their dream came true, and the town of Solvang was founded. The Gregersen family has continued through the generations to demonstrate their love for Solvang and its Danish heritage; giving back to the community that’s meant so much to them. Erik’s and Hans’ father along with two of their uncles donated the land for Solvang Park at the corner of Mission Drive and First Street downtown to the village in the late 1930s. It remains a popular place still today
for community celebrations, family picnics, concerts, summer outdoor movies and more. The Gregersens have a deep respect for their land, a large chunk of which has not been disturbed for the past 100 years or more. Though the Gregersen brothers have lived all over the world, they wouldn’t want to be anywhere else than Solvang. Erik notes, “The people here are wonderful ...the scenery is beautiful, the weather is better than most parts of the world. It’s just a great place to live.”

Louis Lucas Lucas & Lewellen Vineyards You could say that grapes are in Louis Lucas’ blood. Dubbed “Dirtman” by his college cronies for his farming background, Louis grew up in California’s Central Valley, where his father was a leading table grape grower for decades.
n 1970, he founded Tepusquet Vineyards with his brother and a partner, becoming one of the first commercial wine grape growers in Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties. A pioneer in the Central Coast wine industry, Louis is also a master at utilizing innovative growing practices and techniques. “It’s a passion,” says Louis, “You rarely get the opportunity to see the fruits of your labor...the working of human hands. Growing grapes is still farming, but I’ve never thought of it as work. There are a lot of different variables...the challenge of the vineyard, its climate,

its soil, its trellising...it requires care. It’s personal.” In 1996, he joined forces with retired Santa Barbara County Superior Court Judge Royce Lewellen. The dynamic duo has about 400 acres of vineyards planted to 24 varieties of grapes in the three principal wine grape growing regions of Santa Barbara County—Santa Ynez Valley, Santa Maria Valley and Los Alamos Valley. Their Solvang tasting room, opened in 2002, showcases the French varietals of Lucas & Lewellen Vineyards; another Solvang tasting room followed two years later for their Italian varietals of the
Mandolina (soon to be Toccata) label. Never too far away from his vines, Louis, his wife Jill and their six daughters live in Solvang, overlooking one of their well-tended vineyards. Besides the top-notch grape-growing conditions, what keeps him in Solvang? “I love being in Solvang with its quaintness, the mission, and its small community. And of course, the people...we probably all have a little Danish in us by now. I haven’t found a wine yet to go with aebleskiver, but I’m working on it!” Lucas & Lewellan Vineyards will celebrate their 39th harvest in 2011.

Blake Colvin Solvang’s Next Generation
he bright, energetic teenager is the creator of Cupcakes for Cancer, a non-profit that she started in 2007 to help a fellow eighth-grader who had just been diagnosed with leukemia. Blake is a healthy chemo survivor herself, and has been well for the past four years. With the help of her cupcake crew, Blake baked and sold cupcakes after school and at local events, initially raising $5,000 in six weeks. The momentum spread like cupcake batter. Blake has since devised a program to inspire kids around the coun-

try to become involved. “It’s called Frosting Hope Across America,” reveals Blake. Upon request, she says, “We send a cupcake starter kit with an apron, instructions and directions on how to register the bake sale with Cupcakes for Cancer.” The funds raised are sent to CureSearch, a national pediatric cancer research foundation. Cupcakes for Cancer has also donated to the Teddy Bear Cancer Foundation of Santa Barbara and has granted six wishes to children on the Central Coast through the Make-A-Wish Foundation. So far,

Blake and her “cupcake angels” have raised over $55,000 as of fall 2010. Blake took a break from her parttime job scooping ice cream at Mortensen’s Bakery & Ice Cream shop, owned by her Danish-American grandfather Earl C. Petersen, to talk about her goals. “I hope to raise at least $100,000 before my high school graduation in 2012.” Seeing the passion, commitment and caring in the next generation makes the future look bright...and sweet.

Exploring Solvang Today Velkommen til Solvang! Solvang’s rich heritage dates back to 1911 when adventurous Danish-Americans from Iowa traversed the plains to establish a settlement in the golden state of California. They purchased 9,000 sun-kissed acres of the former Rancho San Carlos de Jonata adjacent to the historic 1804 Old Mission Santa Inés for $75,000 (a considerable sum at the turn of the 20th century).

hey situated their new community adjacent to the Old Mission and along the banks of the fertile Santa Ynez River adjoining the Santa Ynez mountain range to the south. Solvang—meaning “sunny field” in Danish—was named by H.C. Hansen, one of the first settlers of the village. To preserve and promote Danish culture, the founders constructed a Danish folk school and church (the building now houses Bit O’Denmark Restaurant, 473 Alisal Rd.); then built Atterdag College, which opened in 1914 and educated thousands through 1970 (now the site of Atterdag Village of Solvang, a retirement community, 636 Atterdag Rd.). As the 20th century progressed and Solvang’s population grew, more buildings began to reflect the Danish farmstyle architecture—the cross-beamed bindingsvaerk (timbers framing either brick or stucco), handsomely carved eaves and doorways, and roofing made of wood shingles cut jagged at the edges. Bethania Evangelical Lutheran Church, dedicated in 1928, was built in the architectural style of Denmark’s Bishop Grundtvig churches and features a wooden ship hanging from the nave. The public is always welcome inside for tours and worship (603 Atterdag Rd., 688-4637). The Danish Days annual festival emerged in 1936 (the first one conducted entirely in the native language)
and continues to commemorate Solvang’s heritage during the third weekend of every September. Solvang Arts & Culture To really appreciate Solvang’s Danish heritage, visit Elverhøj Museum of History & Art, which occupies an original 18th-century Danish-style home on a quiet street two blocks from downtown. Its rooms are filled with historic Solvang photographs, artifacts, Danish arts, crafts and period pieces. Periodically, friendly docents dress in authentic Danish costumes to create living history. Rotating traditional and contemporary art exhibitions, craft classes and special events are offered throughout the year (1624 Elverhoy Way, 686-1211). Hans Christian Andersen Museum, honoring the multi-talented Danish father of the modern fairy tale, is filled to its rafters with originals and copies of Andersen’s books, sketches, paper cutouts, silhouettes and collages. His April 2 birthday is celebrated with a party each year (1680 Mission Dr., 688-2052). A bronze statue of Andersen graces Solvang Park (Mission Dr. & First St.). 30
The National Historic Landmark Old Mission Santa Inés is 19th in the chain of 21 Catholic missions built along the coast of California during the 18th and 19th centuries. Tours of the 1804 mission facilities—featuring Spanish artifacts as well as arrowheads, pottery, pestles and mortars used by the region’s native Chumash Indians—weave a tapestry of history for this active parish church (1760 Mission Dr., 688-4815). This 95-acre historic district also includes Santa Inés Mission Mills, currently under development as a State Park (contact Santa Barbara Trust for Historic Preservation, 965-0093).
Architectural Treasures of “Little Denmark” ust as it does in Copenhagen arbor, the Little Mermaid bronze sculpture (Denmark’s national symbol) welcomes visitors to Solvang at the intersection of Mission Drive (Hwy. 246) and Alisal Road. A 1/3-size replica of Copenhagen’s famous 17th-century Rundetaarn (round tower) is nestled behind one of the village’s four large windmills (436 Alisal Rd.). Instructions: Separate eggs. Mix egg yolks and all other ingredients together at one time and beat until smooth. Allow batter to set for 30 minutes to let baking powder work. Beat egg whites stiff and fold in last. Heat aebleskiver pan. Put 1 tsp. salad oil in each hole and fill completely with batter. Let bake until slightly crusty on bottom. Turn slightly with a knitting needle or skewer. Continue cooking, turning the ball to keep it from burning, until the knitting needle comes out clean when stuck in the center. Serve aebleskiver hot with powdered sugar, jam or jelly. 32

Santa Ynez Valley celebrates National Trails Day on the first Saturday in the month of June with free guided hikes and walks on some of the most popular valley venues. The surrounding Los Padres National Forest has hundreds of miles of trails, allowing visitors to explore this ruggedly handsome area filled with mountains, streams, native plants, forests and caves. Within the forest lies the federally designated Dick Smith Wilderness and San Rafael Wilderness—mainly covered by chaparral, manzanita, scrub oak, yucca and potreros (grassy meadows). Most trails follow the creeks and rivers. A picnic next to a seasonal waterfall is an easy 15-minute hike at day-use Nojoqui Falls County Park, at Highway 101/Old Coast Road and Alisal Road (934-6123). Cachuma Lake Recreation Area, 10 minutes south of Santa Ynez, has easy to moderate trails and Saturday weekly hikes led by docents from its nature center (686-5050 or 693-0691).

Los Alamos (Spanish for “the cottonwoods”), located at the northern entry to Santa Ynez Valley at the junction of US Highway 101 and State Highway 135, is surrounded by vineyards and ranches and has an old-time rustic sensibility. The seven-block-long main thoroughfare has a large antique mall in the historic train depot, quaint shops, a café in an art gallery, several restaurants and wine-tasting rooms, an historic 1880s hotel, a Victorian bed & breakfast and two motels. Each September, Los Alamos Old Days honors the town’s 1876 founding with a weekendlong celebration. More Valley Recreation No matter the age or activity level, the valley offers countless outdoor recreational opportunities. Bicycling (road and mountain) is a popular sport and leisure pursuit with several 25/50/100mile cycling races and pleasure rides held throughout the year. The area proudly hosted the Individual Time Trial stage of the Amgen Tour of California in 2007, 2008 and 2009. Seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong and many professional bicycling teams train on valley roads and mountain passes. Craving the beach? Just head 11 miles south of Buellton, just off Highway 101, to Gaviota State Park, marked by a magnificent railroad trestle that crosses Gaviota Creek. This oceanfront park is a popular spot for swimming, picnicking, hiking and camping. Anglers and scuba divers use the pier on the west end of the beach, and surfers use its boat hoist to access Santa Barbara Channel. Ambitious hikers can climb to Gaviota Peak, offering a spectacular view of the Pacific coastline, and experience a hot sulfur spring along the trail (968-1033).

Beer Brews Here, Too! In the heart of Santa Ynez Valley wine country in 2010, two new breweries opened. Committed to “capturing the essence and taste buds of the region” with an initial run of eight beers, Figueroa Mountain Brewing Company was founded by Jaime Dietenhofer and his father with a beer-tasting room at their retrofitted industrial warehouse (Buellton, 694-2252). Managing owners Cari Jackson-Renfrow (who traces her roots to early Solvang settlers Poul and Niels Iverson in 1911) and her husband Steve Renfrow founded Solvang Brewing Company in a completely revamped windmill building featuring a pub and restaurant offering family-style dining with American and Danish food, a full bar and entertainment in the Viking Room, with brewing done on premises (Solvang, 688-2337). In 1996, winemaker Adam Firestone and his English-born brother-in-law David Walker founded Firestone Walker Brewing Company and the Taproom showcases award-winning Firestone Walker beers while offering gourmet American cuisine in a casual, contemporary atmosphere (Buellton, 686-1577). 54

Wine Country In Santa Barbara County’s wine country, Santa Ynez Valley is one of four distinct American Viticultural Areas (AVA)—also known as wine appellations. The others are Santa Maria Valley, Sta. (Santa) Rita Hills and Happy Canyon of Santa Barbara (located in the eastern-most part of Santa Ynez Valley). Together, they comprise 23,000+ acres of grape vineyards that annually produce more than a million cases of wine—including popular Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Syrah, but also superior Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Viognier and dozens of other varietals. Planted and nurtured in more than 120 vineyards, these grapes are crafted into world-class wines enjoyed around the globe. he area’s east–west coastal mountains form valleys opening directly to the Pacific Ocean. This unique topography allows the flow of sea breezes to shape distinct microclimates, perfect for the cultivation of classic grape varietals resulting in award-winning wines. The vast majority are small boutique operations run by individuals or families. Since missionaries planted the first grapes here in the early 19th century, through Prohibition to the “modern” era of viticulture that began in the 1960s, area winemakers have combined traditional techniques with the latest cutting-edge innovations, most recently with a focus on sustainable and organic practices.
