VISITING THE VALLEY

Just 101 years ago, three Danish-Americans educators discovered a place in sunny California where land was plentiful and their culture could prosper—and founded Solvang (sunny field in Danish) as a 9,000+ acre enclave in the verdant Santa Ynez Valley.

nly 125 miles north of Los Angeles and adjacent to the 1804 Old Mission Santa Inés (now a National Historic Landmark District), Solvang thrived and settlers carried on Danish traditions of language, folk dancing, music, and cuisine. Bethania Lutheran Church, dedicated in 1928, was built in the architectural style of Denmark’s Bishop Grundtvig churches and features a wooden ship hanging from the nave, still popular with visitors today. Solvang feels like northern Europe, yet in the center of California. Just as it does in Copenhagen, Denmark’s national symbol the “Little Mermaid”

bronze sculpture (in ½ size authorized replica) welcomes visitors at the intersection of Mission Drive and Alisal Road. As the 20th century progressed and Solvang’s population grew, more buildings began to reflect the Danish farm-style architecture—the crossbeamed bindingsvaerk, timbers framing either brick or stucco, handsomely carved eaves and doorways, and roofing of blue-green copper or thatch made of wood shingles cut jagged at the edges. Windmills of all sizes catch the first and last light throughout the village. Danish tradition holds that the presence of a stork on a rooftop wards off lightning and brings good luck—

that continues to smile on Solvang and all its visitors still. After the conclusion of World War II, idyllic Solvang was “discovered” by the media and described as a “spotless Danish village that blooms like a rose” and enticed travelers to experience it for themselves. The Danish Days annual festival emerged in 1936 and continues to commemorate Solvang’s heritage during the third weekend of every September. Festivals are traditional parts of Solvang’s charm—from the Taste of Solvang every March to the Old Mission Santa Inés Fiesta each August and Julefest during December. (See Annual Events on page 41)

In 2009, Solvang was honored with the prestigious “Preserve America Community” award by the national Advisory Council on Historic Preservation. The Centennial Celebration throughout 2011 featured many special events— highlighted by a return Royal Visit in June 2010 of Henrik, His Royal Highness The Prince Consort of Denmark; and his dedication of Centennial Plaza —the starting point of The Heritage Trail, honoring those institutions, attractions, industries, and points of interest that tell the educational and entertaining story of Solvang’s rich heritage, especially vibrant at the not-to-be-missed Elverhoj Museum of History & Art.

Be drawn into Scandinavian culture strolling Solvang’s flower-lined streets or stepping into authentic bak10

eries and more than 30 restaurants and cafes (See Dining Guide, pages 45-46). More than a dozen wine-tasting rooms, wine bars and gourmet food shops tempt palates with the bounty of nearby vineyards and wineries. For the area’s freshest fruits, veggies, flowers and local items, check out the downtown Farmers’ Market every Wednesday afternoon yearround near Solvang Park. Shopping in Solvang is like a kaleidoscope—turn in any direction within this pedestrian-friendly village and delight in an array of colorful items such as clogs, hand-made lace, clothing, ironwork, porcelain, elegant collectibles, beautifully crafted imports, vibrant arts and crafts, vibrant furnishings and classic toys in more than 150

one-of-a-kind stores, art galleries and antique centers. The primary retail areas are along Mission Drive, Copenhagen Drive, Alisal Road and charming side streets beckon with wonderful clusters of shops in courtyards and squares. (Discover more about arts, culture and recreation on pages 24-32) Now in its second century, Solvang’s 5,200+ residents of many cultures still continue to enjoy the same traditions as the founders envisioned—embracing the warm, sunny weather, authentic Danish cuisine, hospitality, and old-world charm—while welcoming friends, family and visitors from around the world to share the joys of “California’s Little Denmark.”

VISITING THE VALLEY

More to Explore Ballard Ballard is considered a tiny rural town (population 467), but it holds some of the valley’s most treasured gems. First off, a Little Red Schoolhouse that’s been educating young Ballard residents since 1883. Today it’s one the top-performing schools in Santa Barbara County and the school bell still rings to summon students. Plus, it’s home to The Ballard Inn & Restaurant—one of the most romantic B&Bs in the region with Chef/Owner Budi Kazali creating delectable wine-country fusion meals. It’s well worth a brief visit to Ballard to see historic homes, churches and experience the serenity and charm of a well-preserved country burg.

California history melds with modern-day art galleries, wine tasting rooms and upscale shops in Los Olivos, a picture-perfect country town in the northeast part of the valley (population 1,132). It’s a laid-back place where locals sit on wooden porches and chat with friends and visitors; and most people wear jeans, cowboy boots and casual attire. The town dates back to the 1860s, when the stagecoach route began to pass through. Historic Mattei’s Tavern was built to house and feed passengers and Victorian homes and businesses cluster nearby around the community hub at the intersection of Grand Avenue and Alamo Pintado Avenue, centered by a flagpole. Vineyards, lavender farms, orchards, ranches and horse trails surround the town. This is a fantastic place to visit for a one-stop wine country experience. Many historic structures hold distinctly modern enterprises. Sip local vintages at a tasting room (choose among more than 30 within a 5-block area) and sample locally grown olive oils (Los Olivos means the olives). Dine at a casual café or gourmet restaurant. Shop for contemporary art and locally made gifts. Pop into the Wildling Art Museum to view the best in American wilderness art with a variety of changing exhibitions and programs. 14

Is this 2012, or have we traveled in a time warp back to the days of blacksmith shops, feed stores, and stores with horses hitched to posts in the front? In the vintage cowboy town of Santa Ynez (population 4,418), it’s sometimes hard to tell. It looks much the same as it did in the late 1800s, with false-front buildings and of course, a historic saloon. However, this ole cowboy town also boasts plenty of conveniences for modern-day trail riders. Restaurants serve up various options for diners, from casual pancakes and waffles (beloved by locals) to steaks, Italian fare, Latin cuisine and high-end locavore feasts. Modern shops and galleries line horse-shoe embedded streets. Don’t miss the Santa Ynez Valley Historical Society Museum and Parks-Janeway Carriage House for a fascinating dose of Old West heritage and myriad events year-round. The Chumash Casino Resort is adjacent to the township with 24/7 gaming, live entertainment, dining and a luxurious hotel. Old Santa Ynez Day every June is just one wonderful time to visit, when the town celebrates its heritage with a street fair, parade and country-western entertainment. Cyclists gravitate to Santa Ynez as well for the world-class training center, cycling tours or just the chance to ride a bike along serene country roads—there’s plenty to see and do in the town that gave the Valley its name (Saint Agnes in English.)

VISITING THE VALLEY

Buellton (population 4,828) is an important gateway to the Santa Ynez Valley. It straddles both sides of US Highway 101 (north-south) at State Route 246 (east-west), and from this thriving hub, you have easy access to all regional destinations. Buellton provides essential travel/visitor needs—lodgings, shops, service stations, grocery stores—plus lots of extras, including a range of restaurants, serving everything from tacos and pancakes to sushi and western-style grilled steaks. Before US Highway 101 was built, the Pacific Coast Highway (now Avenue of Flags) traversed the town. Starting in 1924, Buellton’s Pea Soup Andersen’s Restaurant lured travelers off the highway with tasty split pea soup. It quickly became a popular stopover along California’s Central Coast. If you dine there, climb upstairs to view vintage photos in the Buellton Historical Society’s free History Room on the second floor. The Oscar-winning 2004 wine-themed road-trip movie Sideways was filmed in various locations around the Santa Ynez Valley and featured some iconic venues—a waitress in a restaurant? Check out Hitching Post II. The motel with the windmill? Days Inn. Funnylooking birds? Head over to Ostrich Land. They’re all in Buellton!

Los Alamos Surrounded by ranches, farms and vineyards at the northern “entry” to the Santa Ynez Valley, Los Alamos (population 1,890) is located at the junction of US Highway 101 and State Route 135. The main thoroughfare known as Bell Street is only seven blocks long yet reflects as much Old West heritage as any small town on California’s Central Coast. Founded in 1876, two ranchers each donated part of their land to create the town site. Named Los Alamos (Spanish for “the cottonwoods) that still grace the area, it looks and feels like an 1880s stagecoach and train stop—fortunately both have been preserved as the Union Hotel & Saloon and the Depot Antique Mall & Pub today. Other lodgings include two motels and a Victorian-style Bed & Breakfast. Buildings old and new house art galleries, one-of-a-kind shops, wine tasting rooms and restaurants for every type of diner from locavore to carnivore. In September, Los Alamos Old Days honors the town's 1876 founding with a weekend celebration including a parade—an excellent time to wrangle a visit with free fun for the whole family.

Art & Ancestry Art is a strong thread woven into the rich, textured cultural fabric of the Santa Ynez Valley.

vibrant arts community thrives here with exhibitions, events, entertainment, museums and galleries galore. In Los Olivos, the Wildling Art Museum is dedicated to presenting and preserving American wilderness art with engaging seasonal exhibitions, naturerelated art classes, field trips, films and lectures. Art is even blended with wine at Artiste Winery & Tasting Studio in Los Olivos, where bottles are labeled with works of impressionist art and guests are invited to express themselves by painting on community canvases or sketching in art journals. Gallery Los Olivos displays the art of more 40 regional artists. St. Mark’s-in-the-Valley Episcopal Church dates to 1943 when it was founded in Solvang and relocated to its current Arts & Crafts style building in Los Olivos in 1977; a cornerstone of the community offering a range of spiritual, arts, music and service programs. Ancestry also plays an important role in the communities of the Santa Ynez Valley—past is very much a part of the present. Solvang was founded in 1911 by Danish-Americans with a vision of a place to honor their Scandinavian traditions. The western-style towns of Los Olivos, Santa Ynez, Buellton, Ballard and Los Alamos each have their own personalities and colorful histories of ranching, agriculture as well as Native American, Spanish and Mexican settlements. Soak up Solvang’s Danish background at the Elverhøj Museum of History & Art in rooms brimming with historic photos, artifacts, Danish arts, crafts and period pieces. Docents periodically dress in authentic Danish costumes to create living history and rotating exhibits throughout the year along with creative programs stimulate the senses. The Hans Christian Andersen Museum honors the multi-talented Danish father of the modern fairy tale. A bronze statue of Andersen graces Solvang Park. Solvang’s Danish provincial-style architecture reflects its roots. Don’t miss the 1804 Old Mission Santa Ines, a National Historic Landmark District and the Mission Mills State Historic Park (being developed by the Santa Barbara Trust for

Historic Preservation). Solvang’s Vintage Motorcycle Museum pays homage to two-wheeled wonders. Thomas Kinkade Signature Gallery in Solvang showcases the “painter of Light.” Solvang architectural treasures abound including Bethania Lutheran Church and the Little Mermaid bronze sculpture. A 1/3-size replica of Copenhagen’s famous 17th-century Rundetaarn (Round Tower) is nestled behind one of the village’s four large windmills at 436 Alisal Road. Take a moment to relax on the sladerbænken (gossip bench) located at1518 Mission Drive. The Valley’s multi-cultural heritage is on display in Santa Ynez at the Santa Ynez Valley Historical Museum & Carriage House, with eight rooms of intriguing memorabilia from the Chumash Indians through 20th-century ranching days with the largest collection of horse-drawn vehicles west of the Mississippi. Western history reinvents itself in Los Alamos—the vintage train depot is now an antique mall & wine pub. (See listings on page 18 for more information).

Fresh Fare Whether you’re looking for a romantic wine-country dinner or a signature Scandinavian family meal, you’ll find it—along with much more—in the Santa Ynez Valley. From casual to upscale and Japanese to Greek, the password here is variety.

long with that variety is an ever-changing culinary scene that has evolved to embrace the locavore and farm-to-table movements. Mild, sun-soaked winters and a year-round growing season make the valley a ripe location for eating fresh and local. Chef Bradley Ogden of Root 246 notes, “The local farms and growers have always been there, but it’s growing by leaps and bounds…they are so supportive of the local restaurants.” The sophisticated Root 246, adjacent to Hotel Corque in Solvang, features Ogden’s signature farm-to-table cuisine and extensive selection of local wines. You’ll find Ogden and other local chefs prowling the bustling Solvang Village Farmers’ Market every Wednesday afternoon year-round. Seasonal farm stands also offer overflowing bins of fresh produce, lavender, olive oils and more throughout the valley. (See listings on page 18.)

Wine tasting and touring throughout the Santa Ynez Valley is one of the most delicious avocations—and former high-tech executive Karen Steinwachs made it her vocation—since working her first Santa Ynez Valley wine harvest in 2001. Karen is now living her dream as winemaker at Buttonwood Farm Winery in Solvang.

Amazing Grapes Planted and nurtured with exceptional care, Santa Ynez Valley grapes are lovingly crafted into world-class wine sipped and savored around the world.

ine tasting and touring is a unique, memorable and not-to-be-missed experience here. Santa Ynez Valley is one of four distinct American Viticultural Areas (AVA)—also known as wine appellations—in Santa Barbara County’s wine country. The others are Santa Maria Valley, Sta. (Santa) Rita Hills and Happy Canyon of Santa Barbara (tucked in the east end of Santa Ynez Valley). Together, they comprise 23,000+ acres of grape vineyards that annually produce more than a million cases of wine—including popular Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Syrah, but also top-notch Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, Cabernet Sauvignon, Viognier and dozens of other varietals. The unusual east-west orientation of the area’s coastal mountains creates transverse valleys that funnel cool Pacific Ocean air and fog inland during the late afternoon and evening. The resulting hot sunny days and cool nights are a winning combination for both wine grapes and wine tasters. Since missionaries planted the first wine grapes here in the early 19th century, through Prohibition to the “modern” era of viticulture that began in the 1960s, area winemakers have combined traditional techniques with cutting-edge innovations, most recently with an emphasis on sustainable and organic methods. The Oscar-winning 2004 movie Sideways shone a bright Hollywood spotlight on the Central Coast wine scene and spurred visitors to explore the region, which now rivals other blockbuster wine-touring destinations. (For a list of tasting rooms and wine bars open to the public without appointments, see the Wine Tasting Guide on page 56.)

Touring Wine Country Most of the 90+ wineries here are small boutique operations and many are family-owned. Visitors enjoy the relaxed, friendly atmosphere where it’s not unusual to end up chatting with the winemaker or owner in the tasting room —either at the winery or in town—all within a 2- to 20minute drive. Hit the wine trails (design your own itinerary

or sign up with a local tour company for a professionally guided tour in a limousine, jeep, van or private sedan. The locally-owned and operated Stagecoach Company Wine Tours is one of the dozens that offer daily wine-tasting excursions (See Touring on page 54). On-site vineyard tasting rooms range from rustic converted barns to lavish Mediterranean-style villas. At Sanford Winery & Vineyards in Sta. Rita Hills, the tasting room and its spacious terraces are adjacent to the stone and adobe winery and estate vineyards. Foley Estates Vineyard, also in Sta. Rita Hills appellation, is home to a 3,500- square-foot tasting room and event center with spectacular vistas of mountain ranges and oak-studded hills. Bridlewood Estate Winery blends rustic, Spanish-style architecture with a modern, artisan winery in a former Arabian horse ranch.

Sippin’ In Town Buzzing vino venues include the charming artistic town of Los Olivos, which is home to more than 30 tasting rooms surrounded by restaurants and art galleries. Avant Tapas & Wine in Buellton pours wines from more than 30 Central Coast vintners, many of which are made in the Terravant Wine Company’s adjacent custom crush facility. Figueroa Mountain Brewing Co. next door offers craft beers, ales and wine tasting, too. In Lompoc, the “Wine Ghetto” is a loose collection of small wineries, boasting many production facilities and more than a dozen tasting rooms in a two-block industrial complex. You can also sip and savor a variety of wines in convenient downtown Solvang tasting rooms—all within a cork’s toss from each other. Dascomb Cellars, Lucas & Lewellen and a cluster of other wineries offer tastings and sales of their own labels. Wandering Dog Wine Bar, Tastes of the Valleys Wine Bar and Valley Vino Wine Bar & Merchant feature a diverse array of wines for any palate with a focus on the Central Coast. Vinhus is a destination for Danish specialty foods, cheeses and wines. There are hundreds of wine-related events each year. On Wheels Bicycling (road and mountain) are popular sports and with good reason—year-round blue skies, warm sun, quiet roads, stunning scenery and challenging climbs. Several 25/50/100mile amateur cycling rides are held throughout the year and the area proudly hosted the Individual Time Trial stage of the professional cyclists’ Amgen Tour of California in 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2011. Seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong and many pro bicycling teams train on valley roads and mountain passes. Take a spin on bicycles and four-wheeled surrey cycles from Wheel Fun Rentals. Or hop on a daily guided tour, complete with winery tasting and picnic lunch; a cycling vacation or custom cycling package with Santa Barbara Wine Country Cycling Tours.
