AS WITH LOVE, BE AUT Y HAS N O BOU N DARIES. In a surreal corner of California’s coast, romance runs deeply as if penned by Old World authors of fairytale and adventure. Farm-to-table, grape-to-glass valleys thrive mere minutes from kitchens along State Street. Dreams find foundation in a city fashioned of stucco and red tile. By name, it’s known as Santa Barbara. valley

THE SANTA YNEZ VALLEY HAS BEEN A HORN OF PLENTY TO LOCAL INHABITANTS FOR MORE THAN A DOZEN MILLENNIA. THE CHUMASH INDIANS WERE THE FIRST TO EARN A LIVING FROM THIS FRUITFUL PLACE, WHICH IS FRAMED BY THE SAN RAFAEL MOUNTAINS ON THE NORTH AND THE SANTA YNEZ MOUNTAINS ON THE SOUTH, WITH THE SANTA YNEZ RIVER MEANDERING on its east-west path to the sea. Spanish, Mexican, American and Danish inhabitants came in turn, raising cattle and sheep and planting crops and fruit orchards. In the past twenty years, wine has become the leading crop, thanks to ideal growing conditions characterized by cool, foggy nights and hot, sunny days. Dozens of microclimates within the valley’s four American Viticultural Areas provide ideal growing conditions. The valley also yields outstanding organic produce, honey, lavender, boutique olive oils, and on the numerous thoroughbred horse ranches, prize equine stock graze in fields studded with deep-green oak trees, beneath broad stands of manzanita-sage chaparral. Each of the six thriving towns that are considered part of the valley, Los Olivos, Ballard, Santa Ynez, Solvang, Buellton and Los Alamos, are within a short drive of each other, and each has its own unique character that keeps visitors coming back. The more northerly stop is Los Alamos, which is technically separated from the Santa Ynez Valley proper by the Santa Rita Hills. Never mind, because you’d be hard-pressed to find any town with more cool businesses selling more sophisticated comestibles than “Little L.A.” has on its one 200 yard-long commercial strip. The recently coined nickname for the former stagecoach stop plays on Los Alamos’s own initials and on the stream of successful Los Angeles refugees who in recent years have set off a culinary explosion, establishing excellent, quirky restaurants, wine tasting rooms, a bakery, a tap room and more. This new gastro-center is attracting foodies from far and wide, and many are staying the night. With more than thirty tasting rooms on its one short commercial street and some excellent restaurants, charming Los Olivos is the central hub of the valley wine industry. Here, you can spend a day tasting and lounging between visits to the many boutiques, antique stores and art galleries that span Grand Avenue and spill over onto the side streets. Lately, the town has evolved to include a pleasing mix of styles ranging from down home to country chic to urban-influenced wine-country cool. The tiny burg of Ballard, situated midway

between Los Olivos and Santa Ynez, also began life as VISITSYV.COM

a stagecoach stop and has since become a highly prized bedroom community. As the appealing setting for the Ballard Inn and Restaurant, and little else, it’s the perfect place to disappear for

a couple of days while still having easy access to any valley attraction. If you do come, don’t miss a short walk to the Little Red School House. Built in 1882, it still operates today at its picturesque location on the end of a big field of grass. A couple of miles south, Santa Ynez is a tiny town that offers an array of attractions. From a distance, it looks like an Old West stage set, but once you arrive, the town’s authentic character reveals itself. You’ll find boot-stompin’ bars featuring country rock on weekend afternoons, as well as farm-to-table restaurants serving upscale Mexican, perfected traditional Italian, and

contemporary

American

wine-country

cuisine. And with several low-key hotels and inns here, just a few miles from Solvang, it makes a great base camp for daily strikes all over the valley. Solvang, of course, is the world-famous “Little Denmark” founded in 1911 by a group of Danish immigrants looking for a suitable place to build a school for their children. Danish names handed down from early Solvang settlers are still prevalent, as are Danish festivals and fraternal organizations, half-timbered buildings, decorative windmills, Danish sausages, Danish pastries and the ever-popular aebleskiver. No one leaves Solvang without digging in to a plate of the sweet, delightfully diet-busting little spheres topped with raspberry jam and dusted with powdered sugar. A couple of miles west of Solvang, unexpected surprises await in Buellton. On the unpromisingly named Industrial Way, you can visit a huge wine enterprise, a fantastic brewery and brewpub, a craft distillery and a fine restaurant within a Frisbee throw of each other. Settle in here near the Santa Ynez River for some easygoing wine-country fun. As for the Chumash, they’ve come full circle, working to preserve their culture while generating income from their lively lux hotelcasino. Spending time there or anywhere else in the valley, you quickly come to know what the tribe has known for some 13,000 years: the Santa Ynez Valley provides.

Outpost Trading Company Q/A

with Lynda Baxis owner of a life-style gallery filled with a beautifully curated mix of merchandise that has a distinct focus on quality and design. This Santa Ynez boutique is a must-shop destination.

Q: What was your motivation/inspiration for opening Outpost Trading Company and how has it evolved over the years? Before owning Outpost Trading Company, my husband, Marc and I had been selling our clothing collection at this store for years. It was always one of their top sellers and we developed a good relationship with the owners. When the time came for them to sell the business, it was offered to us and we gladly accepted. Both Marc and I worked for many years in NYC, in the world of high-end fashion. This allowed us access to amazing boutiques and designer collections from all over the world. We got to know the buyers of these fabulous shops, the brands they carried and their philosophies. As owner of the Outpost, I wanted to bring that very exclusive and luxurious, yet fun experience to our customers, minus the designer price tags. We worked hard to bring in new exclusive labels at competitive prices, along with new looks, all the while being careful not to change the store too drastically. Because of all of the connections we made over the years, we have top end designers who make exclusive clothing, bags, and jewelry just for us. This contributes to our reputation as being a unique store, offering our customers items that can’t be found anywhere else. Q: Given that you carry multiple categories for men, women, home and art, how do you go about “curating” the store with such interesting inventory, while maintaining a wonderfully cohesive feel? We pull a variety of fabulous pieces that work beautifully together. Marc was fortunate to have worked at Armani for over 20 years, where he gained the necessary business and creative skills. In NYC, I was the VP of Andrew Mark for 8 years and worked very closely with Andrew and his wife, Suzanne. She was the most competitive and business savvy person I have ever worked with and she had a terrific sense of style. It is because of these great experiences and wonderful mentors that we have been able to create and constantly change the store, yet maintain a cohesive feel. Q: Who is your customer? Our customers come from all over the world. They are travelers, men and women, high-powered business people, equestrians, artists, writers, movie directors, stay at home moms, philanthropists, musicians, you name it! We also have a dedicated local clientele, who shops with us regularly and we are so thankful for them. Q: What are your best-selling lines and which are exclusive to you? We have perennial favorites, Frye Boots, embroidered jackets and jeans by Driftwood, Desiqual from Barcelona, Janessa Leone Hats, and casual elegant looks from 27 Miles Malibu, jewelry from Virgin, Saints and Angels and Balance Jewelry. We also carry works from local artists, including fine art photography from Kimerlee Curyl and one-of-a kind custom made furniture and other fun gifts and items for the home. For men there is fleece and active wear from Kuhl, high end western wear from Stubbs and classic looks from Pendleton. Q: Giving back to the community seems to be an important part of your business. Tell us about a few events you have hosted. We hold philanthropic events at the store for organizations like Return To Freedom Wild Horse Preservation and Sanctuary and donate a percentage of all sales for the day. We have also hosted guest lectures with Neda Demayo, the founder of Return To Freedom, Julia Di Sieno, the Executive Director of Animal Rescue Team, a local native wildlife rescue group, and Kathy Burt, founder of JOJI, an organization dedicated to empowering the women weavers of San Martin Chiquito, Guatemala. Santa Ynez was founded in 1882, after Bishop Francis Mora received Congressional approval to sell a large land parcel called College Ranch. The land was located just east of Mission Santa Inés and a mere mile from the historic San Marcos The Santa Ynez Valley Mus and Parks- Historical Pass stagecoach route, Carriaeugem Ho Janeway use which traversed the Santa Ynez Mountains, between Santa Barbara and Los Olivos. Tracts of land sold for between $6 and $15 per acre. Although the fledgling The Santa Ynez Inn town did not become the urban center its founders once hoped for, as the Southern Pacific Railroad bypassed Santa Ynez for a coastal route, it has blossomed into one of the Valley’s most inviting communities and continues to proudly serve the surrounding ranches, farms, residents and visitors to the region.

The town’s historic roots are tended to at the beautiful Santa Ynez Valley Historical Museum and Parks-Janeway Carriage House. The area’s rich and colorful history comes alive at this surprisingly engaging and memorable museum, as it tells the story of the Santa Ynez Valley and the five small towns that make up the area. It is also home to one of the finest collections of authentic horse-drawn vehicles to be found in the entire West - the kind of vehicles that opened the West to modern civilization in the days when "horse-power" meant just that. Come and experience the relaxed small-town charm, natural beauty and cultural history of this Valley town that adds another special dimension to the wine country experience.

ESSENCE OF THE VALLEY Brothers Restaurant at the Red Barn

Brothers Restaurant at the Red Barn lies in the heart of Santa Ynez township, but is very much of the greater Santa Ynez Valley, where the dominant idioms over time have been cattle and horses, cowboys and ranches, organic farms and Vinifera vines. When brothers and chef-owners Jeff and Matt Nichols got to work creating a meat-focused restaurant in a building that had been a restaurant for sixty-plus years, they made sure those elements resonated. They kept the brands on the bar ceiling, dating to the party held when the new bar opened in 1959. They framed the classic western-themed wallpaper found under layers of paint and hung it on the walls. They kept the wagon wheel light fixtures and the two big fireplaces that bookend the dining room and the gleaming exhibition kitchen.

And now they make food to match. A basket of perfect homemade breads hints at what’s to come from a kitchen that surprises by serving not the odd or the unfamiliar, but the familiar done absolutely right. The mesquite-grilled steaks on the menu include a pillow-tender filet mignon with a delicate stiltonport sauce and a potato-onion-cheese gratin that is archetype of its kind. New Zealand rack of lamb in red-wine-rosemary sauce is another standard-setter, and everything else follows suit, from perfectly dressed salads to the ne plus ultra brioche bread pudding. “We strive to make our guests feel at home, whether loyal locals or someone dining with us for the first time,” says Jeff. Matt’s exceptional wine list exudes just that feeling of home, with one selection after another from the best, most well-known areas, vineyards, and winemakers in the valley. 3539 SAGUNTO STREET • SANTA YNEZ 805.688.4142 • BROTHERSREDBARN.COM

Kalyra Winery

A Place with a Difference

It’s hard to get far these days without hearing someone proclaim the uniqueness of X, Y or Z. The claim is often unwarranted, sometimes silly and just as often, flat-out untrue. Kalyra Winery makes no such claim, but it could, because it is. Start with the name, an Australian aboriginal word that translates as “a wild and pleasant place.” And then there is the Viña de Santa Ynez vineyard, one of the oldest in the valley that Kalyra calls home. You can sit on the big family-friendly deck and look across the vines while enjoying wine, cheese and charcuterie. And on summer nights, free films are shown on a screen in the middle of the vineyard. There are also the beautiful labels - aboriginal-style dot paintings that recall the sunny land where winemaker Mike Brown (shown right) grew up and learned the winemaker’s craft, in the famous Barossa Valley. Both the valley tasting room and the one in downtown Santa Barbara, Kalyra by the Sea, have surf-shack decor evoking the casual style and easygoing attitude found in coastal Australia and California. What really sets Kalyra apart is the line-up of Brown’s superb fortified-dessert and port program, including red ports, white ports and rare tawny ports. More than 15 other varietal grapes grown on site find expression in Bordeaux-style blends and dazzling varietals from Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc to Merlot and Sangiovese. This is a place to come and relax, pass the time, feel comfortable and enjoy an experience with wine. And when it’s time to take home a memory, it doesn’t hurt that the tasting room gift shop was voted best in the valley. 343 N. REFUGIO ROAD, SANTA YNEZ • 805.693.8864 • KALYRAWINERY.COM

KIMERLEE CURYL FINE ART

After spending countless hours amongst the wild mustangs, fine art photographer and wild horse advocate, Kimerlee Curyl was granted her place within the herd. She repays this honor through the awareness that her art brings to the plight of these American icons. The images she captures are so visceral and rich; you can almost feel the warm breath or coarse manes of her subjects. Kimerlee, who lives in the Santa Ynez Valley with her two horses, a paint mare named Sequoia and an adopted wild mustang named el Regalo (the Gift), generously donates her efforts to the Return to Freedom Wild Horse Preservation and Sanctuary. The RTF sanctuary is an organization dedicated to preserving the freedom, diversity and habitat of America’s wild horses and currently provides a safe haven to more than 400 wild horses and burros, on 300 acres near Lompoc, about 35 miles from the Valley. Kimerlee’s beautiful and evocative fine art photography is available at Outpost Trading Company in Santa Ynez, 805.686.5588. Los Olivos, a one-time stage coach and railroad stop, is now home to a thriving community, filled with outstanding restaurants, beautiful art galleries, lively wine-tasting rooms and fabulous shopping. Located just off of the scenic highway 154, which runs from Santa Barbara, over San Marcos pass and through the Santa Ynez mountains, this charming historic town is surrounded by golden rolling hills, vast cattle and horse ranches, acres of vineyards, weathered oak and of course olive tress; the features that have come to define the beautiful Santa Ynez Valley. While rich with old California history, today’s Los Olivos is well-established as a must-stop for wine-lovers, foodies, art and antique collectors and savvy shoppers. Once upon a time, Los Olivos was not much more than a welcome stop along the stage coach route, which ran from San Francisco to Los Olivos, San Marcos Pass Rd 154

ine is the ultimate meeting of science and art, but at Artiste Winery in Los Olivos, art has a slight edge. The first thing you notice in this vibrant tasting room is…art. An easel, brushes and paint are ready for action by the front door. Original paintings are scattered around the walls, paintings by tasting room guests cover the ceiling. And then there is the art in the form of labels - some of them miniatures of the art on the walls - covering row after row of the most beautiful bottles of wine you will ever see. Artiste winemaker Bion Rice studied art in Europe and created the tasting room with inspiration from Impressionist master Claude Monet’s studio at the Hôtel Baudy in Giverny, France, where he taught painting to he eal rt of inemaking American tourists. “We wanted it to be more of a working art studio than a gallery, a place that’s lively and fun, where people can come and mark the place up a bit,” he says. Bion learned the winemaker’s craft at his parent’s Sunstone Winery in the Santa Ynez Valley, eventually discovering a passion for blending wines rather than making varietals. For Artiste, he gathers the best varietal wines he can find in Santa Barbara County, much like a painter putting colors on a palette, and then lets elements from a commissioned painting - its colors, setting or mood inspire the blend he creates to go with that label. Bion works with about ten artists, including Christina LoCascio, who may be the perfect match for Artiste. Painting with wine, not paint, she makes beautiful art, but art that is irreducibly linked to the science of turning grapes into wine.

then onto Los Angeles visit visitsyv.com and San Diego. The for a calendar of Overland Coast 2015 events Line Stage Station was established in Ballard, just south of Los Olivos in 1861. This along with the impending arrival of the Pacific Coast Railway, prompted an Italian-Swiss immigrant named Felix Mattei to build a hotel and restaurant in 1887 to accommodate weary rail and stage coach travelers, making the north and south bound connections. The old hotel and restaurant now known as Mattei’s Tavern, still in business, houses one of the town’s many excellent restaurants. In 1887, land auctions were held and this tiny, yet vital village was born. It’s namesake was inspired by a parcel of around 157 acres of land, over looking Alamo Pintado Creek, which sold for eight thousand dollars to Albany, New York native, Alden March Boyd. The recent transplant subsequently planted five thousand olive trees on the property and named it Rancho De Los Olivos, making the naming of the new town a rather obvious choice. A stroll through town reveals many of the original Victorian buildings and residences, most over one hundred years old and still occupied today. The WWI memorial flag pole monument, erected in April of 1918, at the intersection of Grand Avenue and Alamo Pintado Avenue, prominently marks the heart of the town. Or perhaps go to the source and hop on the Foxen Canyon Wine Trail, which begins in Los Olivos and winds north, through horse ranches and vine-covered acres, into the mountains. Don’t be deceived by the historical ambiance and Victorian aesthetic, as behind these well-maintained historic doors, the offerings are distinctly modern, sophisticated and very of-the-moment - from elegant clothing and jewelry boutiques, antiques and art galleries to world-class wine-tasting and gourmet dining, Los Olivos has something to offer even the most discriminating of visitors. Los Olivos hosts a variety of unique events and festivals. Among the most distinct of these is perhaps Bacon and Barrels. Started in 2013 and held every July, this event is all about sharing the bounty the Santa Ynez Valley has to offer. It is considered the definitive outdoor festival for the bacon obsessed foodies and those who prefer their drinks from a barrel. Chefs compete to create their most imaginative, fresh recipes incorporating bacon and the festival highlights the best artisan and craft barrel beverages, such as bourbon, beer, wine, and scotch. What could be better than enjoying world class jazz, tastings from more than thirty wineries, and gourmet hors d'oeuvres from local chefs, all the while supporting local & international projects that improve lives of others?

o experience innovation in the wine industry, you need travel no farther than the Terravant wine center in Buellton - a thriving hub of all that’s fun, original, interesting and good. The building is a surprise - a two-story neo-classical structure in a warehouse district. Its state-of-the-art winemaking facility produces wines for roughly thirty other local vintners, along with some 300,000 cases of Private Label wines, which are distributed all over the country. The Winery Restaurant overlooks the Santa Ynez River on one end and the winemaking works on the other. In between is a spacious dining room and the incredible Wine Wall, lined with high-tech dispensers that allow guests to swipe a card and choose a taste, a halfglass or a full glass of any of 52 wines on tap. It takes both wine tasting and food-and-wine pairing to a new level - especially given the local-centric tapas-style fare created by the crack culinary team. With everything from the grass-fed beef to the sun-soaked produce sourced within twenty miles, the chefs have plenty to work with. How about some “Yuppie Crack” - candied dates stuffed with goat cheese and wrapped in applewood-smoked bacon, with a balsamic reduction and a basil oil drizzle. The pizza with local sausage and roasted tomatoes is particularly popular, as is the seasonally available pear-and-prosciutto pizza with gorgonzola and truffle oil. There’s a super happy hour, the wine club will keep you in great wine for years, and you can even make your own varietal blend at the bar, have it bottled, add a personalized label and take it with you. 35 INDUSTRIAL WAY, BUELLTON 805.686.4742 • AVANTWINES.COM

Oh, and perhaps you have seen the Academy Awardwinning movie, Sideways? Along with a few talented actors, the film co-starred the Santa Ynez Valley and the ever-popular Buellton restaurant, The Hitching Post II.

It all began nearly 150 years ago, in 1875 when Rufus T. Buell came to the Santa Ynez Valley and purchased a portion of the San Carlos de Jonata Ranch. He established a general store, post office, bunkhouses, a blacksmith shop and family homes. Eventually Mr. Buell bought the entire ranch and during a drought period, sold 10,000 acres of it to the Santa Ynez Land and Development Company. Settlers soon followed and the area blossomed, but it was not until 1920 when a United States Post Office was opened that the town was officially named. Figueroa Mountain Brewery

BRINGS ON THE FOOD For the past several years, Figueroa Mountain Brewery has been taking the Central Coast by storm, expanding from its original location in Buellton to include brew pubs in Los Olivos and Santa Barbara, with others slated to open in Santa Maria, Arroyo Grande and as far south as Westlake Village, near Los Angeles. The Buellton headquarters is expanding, too. More gleaming beer storage tanks were added, literally raising the roof, and a full restaurant will open at the end of 2014, so customers can eat anywhere, whether upstairs in the mezzanine, which is set up for fullservice dining, in the taproom or outside. At press time, the menu was still being developed, but it promises to raise the ante on pub grub. The kitchen’s modern comfort food will be the perfect complement to the

brewery’s many popular craft beers. Want mac ‘n‘ cheese? Here, it’s lobster mac ‘n‘ cheese or fried mac ‘n’ cheese with bacon dust. The menu will also be New Zealand Wagyu beef burger, steak with chimichurri, braised short rib sliders, halibut tacos, shrimp ceviche, vegetarian options, and much more. FigMtnBrew has also created a line of hot sauces incorporating Danish Red Lager and Hoppy Poppy IPA. a complement to danish indulgence

When you visit Solvang, you have to indulge in a few Danish diet busters, like sausage, pastries and aebleskiver. Later, when it’s time for something green, fresh, and healthy, Fresco Valley Cafe is waiting. Located a bit off Solvang’s sometimes crowded main drags, this hidden gem of a restaurant attracts lots of locals who love the calm they find on its sun-soaked garden patio, and visitors who are happy to sit a while.

The restaurant offers plenty of seasonal local produce - much of it organic and delivered by the farmers themselves - plus eggs from free-range chickens and excellent fresh local seafood. The “something for everyone” menu is long on simplicity and familiarity, offering fantastic soups, satisfying appetizers, tortilla wraps, and classic sandwiches and salads. The pastrami sandwich, the chicken salad, the BLT, the turkey club, the French dip, the burgers and the many other sandwiches are loyal renditions of the classics. Ditto the Cobb salad, the Caesar, the warm spinach salad, the Greek salad the seared ahi salad, and the many others. “Some places have amazing sandwiches with infused this and that,” says owner Matt Raab. “But sometimes you want what you remember as a kid.” A local craft beer or a glass of wine made from grapes grown within 15 miles of your glass, will make those memories sing. Finish with a slice of mixed-berry-lemon cheesecake or a baseball-sized chocolate mousse “truffle.”

Explore the treasure trove of over one hundred independently-owned boutiques, art galleries and antique centers that fill the tree-lined streets and quaint courtyards. Solvang offers a variety of palate pleasing cuisine, including Danish, American, international and wine country, with a range of price points. With over one million visitors a year, Solvang manages to maintain a relaxing and welcoming feel as the pedestrian friendly streets buzz with visitors from all around the world. HOW DID THE DANISH CAPITAL OF AMERICA END UP IN CENTRAL CALIFORNIA? IT ALL BEGAN OVER 100 YEARS AGO. IN 1911 THREE DANISH IMMIGRANTS Reverend Benedict Nordentoft, Reverend J. M. Gregersen and Professor P. P. Hornsyld bid farewell to the central plains of Iowa, and headed west for the golden sunshine of California. There they purchased nearly 9,000 acres of land in the Santa Ynez Valley, just adjacent to the historic Old Mission Santa Inés. This parcel was then subdivided and sold for farms, homes, and businesses to create a town for Danish immigrants. Profits from the sale of land were used to build a Danishstyle folk school, where the curriculum was focused on educating young adults, while preserving and promoting Danish culture.

A Big Bite of Family Friendly Fun in Solvang Aaron Petersen is a family guy who has kids and has coached kids on the JV football team at Santa Ynez High School for 18 years. So he created his newest business, the year-and-a-half-old Chomp, in the heart of Solvang, to give local and tourist kids and their families a place to have a good time. Voted the “Best New Restaurant” in the Santa Ynez Valley in 2013, Chomp is always full after high school events and soccer tournaments. This modern take on the diner focuses on three things: burgers, fries and shakes. It also has fish

‘n’ chips, homemade mac ’n’ cheese, fish tacos, veggie choices, ice cream sundaes, root beer floats and banana splits. Nostalgia alert: The milkshakes come with the metal blender container that holds the extra. Younger children have their own area, with booths for their parents and stools at a pint-size counter. There’s also a black board wall where anyone can be creative or simply write a note to friends. Aaron also supports the kids in a career sense, hiring them by the dozen. Those young people earned Chomp a “Best Service” award, too. “They might forget to refill a coffee or a water,” Aaron laughs, “but they kill them with charm and kindness.” For parents, there are local craft beers on tap and wine by the glass at $5 each. Bring in your own favorite beer, and Aaron will open it for you and give you a glass. Ditto wine; there’s no corkage fee. There is also a private “Party Room” for groups and parties. Chomp: it’s a value and a values kind of place. CHOMP • 1693 MISSION DRIVE, SOLVANG • 805.688.7733 • CHOMPSOLVANG.COM

Half size replica of Denmar k’s iconic “Little Mermaid"

Students were offered a broad range of courses, from Danish arts and crafts, singing, folk dancing, and gymnastics, to bookkeeping, history, English and literature. Advertisements were placed in Danishlanguage newspapers and word spread about the new colony in the west. Early settlers, mostly Danish, arriving from other parts of California, the Midwest and Denmark, populated Solvang and a variety of businesses were soon established to provide for the needs of a growing community. The Solvang Hotel opened in 1911 and soon after, a general store, creamery, bakery, bank, and butcher shop. In its early years, nearly all of the buildings in Solvang were simple wood frame construction in a classic western style or Mission/Spanish style, with white washed stucco and red tile

roofs. In 1928 the community chose to construct their new Lutheran Church to reflect and honor the Danish heritage of the town’s settlers. The church built in the style of Storks perched atop buildings are a symbol of good 12-14th century rural churches, luck in Denmark complete with corbie-stepped gables was the first Danish-style structure in Solvang. It is still home to parishioners today. In 1931, Alfred “Baker” Petersen was the first to incorporate the Danish brick and timber architectural style, known as bindingsværk, into his home. This was soon followed by Einer Johnsen’s Jewelry and Radio Shop in 1936. In the 1940s, Ferd Sorensen, a local plumber, metalsmith and woodworker built Solvang’s very first windmill, just adjacent to his Danish Provincial style home.

The windmill, now one of four, still proudly welcomes visitors at the east entrance to town. It wasn’t until after WW II that the look for which Solvang is now famous began to gain momentum. In January of 1947, the Saturday Evening Post magazine proclaimed it a “spotless Danish village that blooms like a rose in California’s charming Santa Ynez Valley." This feature article, along with irresistible photos, put Solvang on the map as the “Danish Capital of America”. In the following years, new downtown buildings were constructed in the Danish provincial style; existing structures were given “Danish make-overs”, windmills were erected and streets renamed to pay homage to famous Danes and locations in Denmark. Solvang takes pride in its rich Danish heritage and celebrates the hard work and vision of its residents and business owners. The vibrant cultural, culinary and artistic traditions continue and ties with Denmark remain active. Visit Solvang and share the experience of being Danish for a day, a week, or longer!

BUTTONWOOD FARM WINERY & VINEYARD The second word in the name of Buttonwood Farm Winery & Vineyard did not get there by accident. It’s there because the 106-acre property, which has 39 acres of Vinifera vines, is also a working organic farm and has been since the late Betty Williams founded it in 1968 “based on good practices for people, animals and the earth.” Betty was a visionary who had a deep respect for the environmental whole of her property and a profound sense of her responsibility as a steward of it. Her vision, “organic” in every sense of the word, continues to guide Buttonwood today. Come to a big event here, and you’ll enjoy not only fine wines, but also olive oil from trees on the property, honey from their bees, butter from Buttonwood cows, plus herbs, fruits and vegetables, including pears, persimmons, pomegranates, peaches, tomatoes and probably more kinds of basil that you’ve seen in one place, all grown a moment’s walk from where you’ll dine. A chef ’s dinner here can mean planning a menu months in advance so that the raw ingredients can be grown to order. The August All Farm dinner just may be the ultimate expression of the farm-to-table ethic. But it always sells out, so sign up early! As for Buttonwood’s wines, they are as distinctive as Betty Williams’ vision. Whether it’s a Cabernet Franc from 31-year-old vines, the Merlot, the Sauvignon Blanc or the Cabernet Sauvignon these estate grown wines give full-throated expression to the farm’s terroir. Add painter Seyburn Zorthian’s stunning labels, and you have an integrated whole that gives moving meaning to the symbiosis that occurs when good people and good land come together. 1500 ALAMO PINTADO ROAD, SOLVANG 805.688.3032 • BUTTONWOODWINERY.COM

THE SERENE LITTLE VILLAGE OF BALLARD HAS THE DISTINCTION OF NOT ONLY BEING THE SMALLEST OF THE SANTA YNEZ VALLEY TOWNS, BUT THE OLDEST AS WELL. NESTLED BETWEEN the surrounding towns of Los Olivos, Solvang and Santa Ynez, this mostly residential community is home to the first public school in the Valley. Designated a Santa Barbara County Historical Landmark, The Ballard Elementary School, also known as the Little Red Schoolhouse, has educated elementary school students since 1883. Early on, it was the only public building in the valley and was often used for church services, weddings, funerals, community meetings and Saturday night dances. Ballard’s beginnings go back to the early 1860’s, when New Yorker George W. Lewis homesteaded 800 acres of land, which covered part of the present day towns of Ballard and Los Olivos. Mr. Lewis entrusted his dear friend, William N. Ballard, with the care of his Valley property while he spent stretches of time in

Mexico tending other holdings. At the time, Mr. Ballard was the superintendent of the Concord stagecoach line, which ran between San Francisco and Yuma, Arizona. As there was no stagecoach stop between Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo, Ballard built an adobe station, which still stands today and is now a private residence in town. Upon the sudden death of William Ballard in 1881, George Lewis returned from Mexico and founded and named the historic township after his old friend. In its early days, Ballard thrived, as it was home to the only general store, post office and blacksmith shop in the Valley. Tiny Ballard boasts yet another Santa Barbara County Historical Landmark - The Ballard Presbyterian Church, now known as Ballard Country Church. It was designed by Samuel Lyons, a local resident and justice of the peace, and constructed under his supervision in 1898, by local members of the congregation. In the midst of a drought, with little rain falling and no crops to tend, people volunteered their time and labor to construct the church. The original church bell was purchased from Montgomery Ward and Co. and stained glass windows were donated and installed in memory of early settlers to the Valley. The picturesque church with its steepled belfry and fish-scale shingles now serves as a chapel for funerals and weddings. Located in the heart of town is the splendidly romantic bed and breakfast, The Ballard Inn and Restaurant. This small luxury inn offers award-winning French-Asian cuisine, with an emphasis on fresh local flavors. This sweet spot is the perfect respite from a busy day of wine-tasting and touring in the valley.

Mickey Rooney & Ava Gardner were married in Ballard on January 10, 1942

Surrounded by oak-studded grassy hills and acres of farmland and vineyards, Los Alamos is only seven blocks long, yet boasts some serious shopping and culinary "cred". Exploring this classic old western town from the street almost feels like a step back in time, with its historical buildings and vintage charm, but once inside, it is obvious that it has more than kept up with the times and may even be a little ahead of the curve. This classic small town is sprinkled with a variety of award-winning restaurants, wine-tasting rooms, one-of-a-kind art galleries, and antique shops - there is even a bar solely dedicated to fine craft beers. Even the most serious “foodies” will be surprised and impressed with the offerings. WINE'S THE THING AT THIS SALOON IN LOS ALAMOS Tasting wine at the Wine Saloon in the gastronomic boomtown of Los Alamos (population 1,890) can feel like being part of Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn’s big blended family. Russell is a passionate winemaker who discovered the superb Pinot Noirs of the Santa Rita Hills AVA while shooting a Quentin Tarantino film there. Eventually, he connected with Ampelos Cellars proprietors Peter and Rebecca Work, became Peter’s winemaking apprentice, and started producing, much of it with grapes from the Ampelos vineyard, the first in the United States to be triple-certified as sustainable, organic and biodynamic. At the Wine Saloon, which is the second bar of the historic Union Hotel, built in 1880 and with its décor still fully aligned with the era, you can sip Russell’s excellent GoGi (GO-ghee) wines (GoGi was Russell’s childhood nickname), Peter Work’s Ampelos wines, and others bearing the Hudson-Bellamy label. That one belongs to Hawn’s daughter, Kate Hudson, and her partner, Matt Bellamy, front man for the band Muse. Russell’s sister, Jami Way, manages the saloon and can help trace how the many strands of this big, happy family wine operation fit together. This unusual and appealing tasting room lacks the least hint of wine-snob stuffiness - though a stuffed moose head and a few other critters made lively by a taxidermist lost in time, overlook the saloon and its shuffleboard table from various perches. The ceiling covered with dollar bills has its own stories. And when the dazzling Los Alamos sunlight invites you outside, the beautiful hotel garden is a fine place to sit and sip. 2015 SANTA YNEZ VALLEY DESTINATION GUIDE

T

Thinking of tying the knot? The Santa Ynez Valley may be the perfect spot - the scenery is breathtaking, the venues romantic and the accommodations plentiful. For inspiration and insight, we sat down with wedding and event planner extraordinaire, Rani Hoover, owner of Inspired Weddings and Events. Rani is the artistic visionary and creative talent behind some of the most beautiful and unique weddings in the Santa Ynez Valley. SYVDG: What makes the Santa Ynez Valley such a special place to "tie the knot”? RH: The SYV is simply magical. The lighting, the vineyards, horse

ranches, exceptional cuisine, and endless days of sunshine. Only 2 hours from Los Angeles and seven miles from the coast, with over 80 wineries and vineyards, endless rolling hills, dappled with live oak trees and the most romantic “golden hour” sunsets every evening make for a picture perfect setting to welcome family and guests to California, from across the country and around the world. The trend for my clients planning their destination wedding is to host their guests for a 3 to 4 day weekend, with a welcome reception, wine tasting, dining at one of the many local “foodie” eateries, an outdoor winery, ranch or estate wedding and a sendoff brunch. The valley towns are located only a few miles apart, making travel between celebrations scenic and easy to navigate. A favorite part of having a wedding in the Santa Ynez Valley is being able to return, year after year, to relive the experience and the memories together.

SYVDG: Of the many fabulous weddings you have orchestrated in the Santa Ynez Valley, which one really stands out as being particularly memorable and why? RH: The most recent was a summer wedding between my clients

Eric and Edgar, at a local winery, vineyards as the ceremony backdrop and the perfect balance of elegance and rustic charm. Just three months into planning their wedding, Edgar suffered a great loss with the passing of his mother. To celebrate her life, we set a special seat for her, with floral and a hand painted sign from Edgar that said “Mom, you would be here with me today, if heaven weren’t so far away.” VISITSYV.COM

Here in the Santa Ynez Valley it’s not about the grandeur of a ballroom, it’s about outdoor spaces with sunset views, rolling hills covered in grapevines, the relaxed California small town vibe and warm hospitality -- Rani hoover

The love shared between Eric and Edgar and their friends and families, who had been waiting together for 17 and a half years for this union, was profound and unlike any I’ve experienced. These families were already united and as the legalities were performed and celebrated, I felt honored to have been entrusted with this event and to have been a witness to everything marriage should be.

SYVDG: What is the best part about being a wedding planner in the SYV? RH: I have the great fortune of loving what I do. Being able to do so in such a beautiful and natural setting is an ongoing pleasure. I love the generational community, knowing my vendors and venues so well and 58

having the Valley backdrop as my office is an absolute dream. Here in the Santa Ynez Valley it’s not about the grandeur of a ballroom, it’s about outdoor spaces with sunset views, rolling hills covered in grapevines, the relaxed California small town vibe and warm hospitality.

syvdg: What is your vision of the perfect wedding? RH: The perfect wedding is one where my clients are represented beautifully in everything they provide for their guests, where I’m able to absorb every little hiccup that may arise, so they can focus on their commitment to each other and celebrating that commitment with friends and family. I hear a lot of positive feedback following each wedding, but the most touching and meaningful is always that the wedding

was more than they could have imagined or dreamed of and they wish they could do it all over again.

SYVDG: What’s the most creative thing you’ve done for a ceremony? RH: The tradition of ceremony has changed so much over the past decade and since most of the ceremonies I plan are outdoors, in unique settings, the opportunities for creativity are endless! The most creative ceremonies have focused on the processional. I had VISITSYV.COM

SYV WEDDINGS one wedding where the Groom arrived on horseback, with his best man alongside and they were greeted at the edge of the ceremony lawn by another friend, who was waiting, silver tray in hand, with cognac and freshly trimmed cigars. The Bride followed with her flower girl and ring bearer in a horse drawn carriage. Another ceremony started as a very traditional processional, but when the music kicked in, the wedding party danced up the aisle to a choreographed routine that included all of the parents, 22 attendants and a bride and groom who knew how to get a party started!

EXPLORE WINE COUNTRY

W

ANDER THROUGH SANTA BARBARA COUNTY AND YOU WILL FIND YOURSELF TRAVELLING BETWEEN BEAUTIFUL HILLS AND MOUNTAINS, THROUGH FARMS AND RANCHES, AND PAST BREATHTAKING VINEYARDS. THE UNIQUE TOPOGRAPHY OF EASTWEST MOUNTAINS OPENING DIRECTLY TO THE PACIFIC OCEAN creates an ideal environment for the cultivation of classic grape varietals. Meaning: venture onto one of those picturesque

vineyards and you will enjoy world class wines of distinct character. Santa Barbara County has five unique winegrowing regions, or American Viticultural Areas (AVAs). The Santa Ynez Valley AVA is an east-west corridor that encompasses three smaller AVAs: Sta. Rita Hills, Ballard Canyon, and Happy Canyon of Santa Barbara. The different microclimates in the Santa Ynez Valley allow for many varietals to grow well. On the western edge of this valley lies the Sta. Rita Hills, where the marine influence creates an extremely cool climate and an optimal place to grow Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Nestled into the center of the Valley is the Ballard Canyon, whose soils and climate make superb Rhône varietals like Syrah and Grenache. Happy Canyon of Santa Barbara lies on the eastern edge of the Santa Ynez Valley, running up into the San Rafael Mountains just northwest of Lake Cachuma. The warm climate of this inland region allows winegrowers to focus on Bordeaux varietals like Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc. Santa Barbara County’s northernmost winegrowing region is the Santa Maria Valley AVA, where the long, cool growing season allows Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Syrah to thrive, and the wide open vineyard landscapes offer a true sense of wine country. The diversity of the region is reflected not only in the landscapes and climates but in the atmosphere and types of wineries and vineyards. There’s something for everyone, whether you want to meander through wine country or enjoy an urban wine tasting experience.

T

here are six wine trails throughout the region. Choosing one wine trail to explore per day, and visiting three to four tasting rooms makes for a perfect wine tasting

outing. It is recommended to bring food with you on your excursion, and many wineries have scenic picnic areas. If you want to learn more about the winegrowing and winemaking process, many wineries and vineyards offer tours of their cellars and properties. Tours often need to be arranged in advance of a visit, so call ahead to find out more information and to make a reservation. If you are going wine tasting in a group, let the wineries know you are coming as some require reservations for groups of 8 or more. Wineries and tasting rooms also host a dynamic array of special events throughout the year, ranging from vineyard hikes to barrel tastings, winemaker dinners to grape stomps. When adventure,

2015 SANTA YNEZ VALLEY DESTINATION GUIDE

“While a man’s battle against himself is at the heart of golf’s appeal, it is the setting in which it’s played that is most wonderful.” H W , 1897 erbert

ind

T

ruer words were never spoken when it comes to describing three of the spectacular golf courses in the Santa Ynez Valley, Rancho San Marcos, the River Course at Alisal, and La Purisima. All three are within a few miles of each other, as you make your way through the valley from Santa Barbara to the Central Coast. Just 15 minutes from Santa Barbara is the 6,939 yard par 71 Robert Trent Jones Jr., course, Rancho San Marcos; a course that Golf Magazine named one of the Top 10 golf courses in California to play and Golf Digest gives a 4 1⁄2 star rating. Set against the backdrop of the spectacular Santa Ynez Valley, the course is steeped in history with the cart path on hole 17, being part of the actual Pony Express Route. The standout features are a fast pace of play, the post card perfect par 3’s and the firm and fast, undulating and perfectly maintained greens. The back 9 is a must not only for the challenging 18th hole, which has a dramatically elevated tee, but a view of the Valley that will literally take your breath away - pure nature at its best. Further up the Pass, is the 6830 yard, par 72 River Course at Alisal, an inviting course that is approachable from a player’s standpoint and offers banquet facilities and a renowned restaurant and bar for post-round enjoyment. Designed around four lakes and the Santa Ynez River, it presents its own set of challenges just keeping your ball out of the water. The rough between fairways is modest and still playable with extremely demanding holes, such as the 7th and the 10th. The 7th is a 438 yard, par 4 with a hazard to the right and a lake on the left, which plays into the prevailing winds to a wide and shallow slightly elevated green. The 10th hole is a par 4, No. 2 handicap with a narrow fairway, hazard on the left that generally plays downwind to a narrow green protected by a large bunker on the right. This hole demands two solid shots to get home in regulation. The last four holes showcase the Santa Ynez Mountains, with the 15th, an uphill climb VISITSYV.COM

71

SYV GOLFING against a creek and the 17th, a 105 yard gem that is surrounded by water and sand on three sides and demands an accurate wedge shot from the tee. Like Rancho, the setting is stunning; with wine vineyards on the north side of the course and the Santa Ynez River on the south - the kind of course you bring your clubs… and your camera. When you get out of the car to play La Purisima, the pros will tell you, “put on your big boy pants” because hands down this is one challenging track. On this par 72, 7,105 yard course, there are no benign holes and each and every one of them demands your full attention. Designed by worldrenowned

architect,

Robert

Muir

Graves, it’s been described as the “truest test of pure golf that our area has to offer.” The greens are lightening fast and true with some of the best par 5’s of any course, such as the 15th hole, a double dog-leg where power hitters may run out of fairway from the La Purisima Golf Course LA PURISIMA GOLF COURSE • 3455 EAST HIGHWAY 246 • 805.735.8395 • LAPURISIMAGOLF.COM RANCHO SAN MARCOS • 4600 HIGHWAY 154 • 805.683.6334 • RSM1804.COM RIVER COURSE AT THE ALISAL • 150 ALISAL ROAD • 805.688.6042 • RIVERCOURSE.COM

tee. Other noteworthy holes are the 9th, a 230 yard par 3, which demands impeccable aim through a narrow stand of eucalyptus trees and the 18th hole, which no matter what time you play, you’re hitting into the teeth of the wind. The hot tip for keeping your score low at La Purisima is to play in the morning before the winds come up. Each course is unique and offers its own challenges, but all three provide an enjoyable and rewarding experience regardless of your handicap. A two night, three-day golf escape to the Santa Ynez Valley is one golf experience you will never forget. World-class golf, spectacular greens all in a setting you can only find in the
