meandering on its east-west path to the sea. Spanish, Mexican, American and Danish inhabitants came in turn, raising cattle and sheep and planting crops and fruit orchards. In the past twenty years, wine has become the leading crop, thanks to ideal growing conditions characterized by cool, foggy nights and hot, sunny days. Dozens of microclimates within the valley’s four American Viticultural Areas provide ideal growing conditions. The valley also yields outstanding organic produce, honey, lavender, boutique olive oils, and on the numerous thoroughbred horse ranches, prize equine stock graze in fields studded with deep-green oak trees, beneath broad stands of manzanita-sage chaparral. Each of the six thriving towns that are considered part of the valley, Los Olivos, Ballard, Santa Ynez, Solvang, Buellton and Los Alamos, are within a short drive of each other, and each has its own unique character that keeps visitors coming back. The more northerly stop is Los Alamos, which is technically separated from the Santa Ynez Valley proper by the Santa Rita Hills. Never mind, because you’d be hard-pressed to find any town with more cool businesses selling more sophisticated comestibles than “Little L.A.” has on its one 200 yard-long commercial strip. The recently coined nickname for the former stagecoach stop plays on Los Alamos’ own initials and on the stream of successful Los Angeles refugees who in recent years have set off a culinary explosion, establishing excellent,

quirky restaurants, wine tasting rooms, a bakery, a tap room and more. This new gastro-center is attracting foodies from far and wide, and many are staying the night. With more than thirty tasting rooms on its one main commercial street and some excellent restaurants, charming Los Olivos is the central hub of the valley wine industry. Here, you can spend a day tasting and lounging between visits to the many boutiques, antique stores and art galleries that span Grand Avenue and spill over onto the side streets. Lately, the town has evolved to include a pleasing mix of styles ranging from down home to country chic to urban-influenced wine-country cool. The tiny burg of Ballard, situated midway between Los Olivos and Santa Ynez, also began life as a stagecoach stop and has since become a highly prized bedroom community. As the appealing setting for the Ballard Inn and Restaurant, and little else, it’s the perfect place to disappear for a couple of days while still having easy access to any valley attraction. If you do come, don’t miss a short walk to the Little Red School House. Built in 1882, it still operates today at its picturesque location on the end of a big field of grass. A couple of miles south, Santa Ynez is a tiny town that offers an array of attractions. From a distance, it looks like an Old West stage set, but once you arrive, the town’s authentic character reveals itself. You’ll find boot-stompin’ bars featuring country rock on weekend afternoons, as well as farm-totable restaurants serving upscale Mexican, perfected traditional Italian, and contemporary American winecountry cuisine. And with several low-key hotels and inns here, just a few miles from Solvang, it makes a great base camp for daily strikes all over the valley. Solvang, of course, is the world-famous “Little Denmark” founded in 1911 by a group of Danish immigrants looking for a suitable place to build a school for their children. Danish names handed down from early Solvang settlers are still prevalent, as are Danish festivals and fraternal organizations, halftimbered buildings, decorative windmills, Danish sausages, Danish pastries and the ever-popular aebleskiver. No one leaves Solvang without digging in to a plate of the sweet, delightfully diet-busting little spheres topped with raspberry jam and dusted with powdered sugar. A couple of miles west of Solvang, unexpected surprises await in Buellton. On the unpromisingly named Industrial Way, you can visit a huge wine enterprise, a fantastic brewery and brewpub, a craft distillery and a fine restaurant within a Frisbee throw of each other. Settle in here near the Santa Ynez River for some easygoing wine-country fun. As for the Chumash, they’ve come full circle, working to preserve their culture while generating income from their lively lux hotel-casino. Spending time there or anywhere else in the valley, you quickly come to know what the tribe has known for some 13,000 years: the Santa Ynez Valley provides. 14

once a bustling stage coach and railroad stop, Los Olivos is now a thriving community, filled with outstanding restaurants, beautiful art galleries, lively wine tasting rooms and fabulous shopping. Located just off of the scenic highway 154 (which runs from Santa Barbara over San Marcos Pass), this historic town is surrounded by golden rolling hills, horse ranches, acres of vineyards, weathered oak and of course olive trees; all features that have come to define the Santa Ynez Valley. While rich with old California history, today’s Los Olivos is well established as a must-stop for wine lovers, foodies, art and antique collectors, and savvy shoppers. Los Olivos was once not much more than a welcome stop along the stagecoach route, which ran from San Francisco to San Diego. The Overland Coast Line Stage Station was established in Ballard, just south of Los Olivos in 1861. This along with the impending arrival of the Pacific Coast Railway,

prompted an Italian-Swiss immigrant named Felix Mattei to build a hotel and restaurant in 1887, in order to accommodate weary rail and stage coach travelers. The old hotel and restaurant now known as Mattei’s Tavern, is still in business and houses one of the town’s many excellent restaurants. In 1887, land auctions were held and this tiny, yet vital village was born. Its namesake was inspired by a parcel of around 157 acres of land, overlooking Alamo Pintado Creek, which sold for eight thousand dollars to Albany, New York native, Alden March Boyd. The recent transplant subsequently planted five thousand olive trees on the property and named it Rancho De Los Olivos, thus giving the town its name. A stroll through Los Olivos reveals many of the original Victorian buildings and residences, most over one hundred years old and still occupied today. The WWI memorial flag pole monument, erected in April of 1918, at the intersection of Grand Avenue and Alamo Pintado Avenue, prominently marks the heart of the town. From there explore the many wine tasting rooms featuring local vintages from the surrounding vineyards. Or perhaps go to the source and hop on the Foxen Canyon Wine Trail, which begins in Los Olivos and winds north, through horse ranches

The couple’s commitment to quality is evident everywhere. They serve Peet’s espresso and Green Star organic fair-trade coffee. They support local producers of meats, produce and fish. Everything is made from scratch, from the satisfying bread to the delicious entrées like lamb shank with panzanella and incredible desserts, such as the Café Scream. That sublime treat combines flourless chocolate cake, caramel sauce and vanilla ice cream made in a 2.5-gallon maker handed down from Sam’s mother. In 2012, when the owners of Larner Vinyard and Winery set out to find the perfect place to sell the family wine, the timing was good, as the historic Los Olivos Garage space, located in the heart of town, was available. An old general store building on the Larner family property provided the inspiration for Los Olivos General Store, and as a tribute to the building’s past, a vintage gas pump was purchased and placed in front of the store. The pump, now a rather iconic fixture in town, anchors the street corner and welcomes guests. J. Woeste in Los Olivos is that rare store where it’s almost as much fun to hang out
as it is to shop - just ask the local who likes to nap here at noon. But if the napping’s good, the shopping’s better. People love surprises, and they’re everywhere at this 17-year-old indoor-outdoor store, which has become a must-stop for visitors and a favorite with locals. It’s a place to take your time, get lost and discover. “It’s like a treasure chest with a lot of whimsy,” says proprietor Jefferson Woeste. Succulents, a specialty, are ubiquitous, arranged in diverse containers and combined with each other and with decorative elements in dozens of mini-vignettes. Turn a corner and a new theme emerges - angels, Buddhas, frogs, birds, turtles. There’s even a hen house, and Jefferson’s two friendly dogs. The merchandise changes constantly. It all began nearly 150 years ago, in 1875 when Rufus T. Buell came to the Santa Ynez Valley and purchased a portion of the San Carlos de Jonata Ranch. He established a general store, post office, bunkhouses, a blacksmith shop and family homes. Eventually Mr. Buell Mendenhall Museu m is home to bought the entire ranch one of the West Coa st’s largest petroliana collect and during a drought ions period, sold 10,000 acres of it to the Santa Ynez Land and Development Company. Settlers soon followed and the area blossomed, but it was not until 1920 when a United States Post Office was opened that the town was officially named. Strategically located at what was once the crossroads of state highways 101 and 246, Buellton thrived as automobile traffic grew, bringing car-loads of travelers right through town
and up the main street, Avenue of Flags. Although the busy freeway was moved to its current location in the 1960s, visitors still come to Buellton for essential travel needs, food and fun. BUELLTON IS HOME TO a variety of unique festivals and events. ONE OF the most POPULAR is THE Buellton Brew FesT. GUESTS ARE INVITED TO sample craft beer from over 40 brewers, enjoy a variety of food options, live music, and games. This 21 and over event takes place at River View Park. Buellton Wine and Chili Fest: Some of the best Valley chefs compete in a chili cook-off and salsa competition. Mexico tending other holdings. At the time, Mr. Ballard was the superintendent of the Concord stagecoach line, which ran between San Francisco and Yuma, Arizona. As there was no stagecoach stop between Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo, Ballard built an adobe station, which still stands today and is now a private residence in town. Upon the sudden death of William Ballard in 1881, George Lewis returned from Mexico and founded and named the historic township after his old friend. In its early days, Ballard thrived, as it was home to the only general store, post office and blacksmith shop in the Valley. Tiny Ballard boasts yet another Santa Barbara County Historical Landmark - The Ballard Presbyterian Church, now known as Ballard Country Church. It was designed by Samuel Lyons, a local resident and justice of the peace, and constructed under his supervision in 1898, by local members of the congregation. In the midst of a drought, with little rain falling and no crops to tend, people volunteered their time and labor to construct the church. The original church bell was purchased from Montgomery Ward and Co. and stained glass windows were donated and installed in memory of early settlers to the Valley. The picturesque church with its steepled belfry and fish-scale shingles now serves as a chapel for funerals and weddings. Located in the heart of town is the splendidly romantic bed and breakfast, The Ballard Inn and Restaurant. This small luxury inn offers award-winning French-Asian cuisine, with an emphasis on fresh local flavors. to sell a large land parcel called College Ranch. The land was located just east of Mission Santa Inés and a just a mile from the historic San Marcos Pass stagecoach route, which traversed the Santa Ynez Mountains, between Santa Barbara and Los Olivos. Tracts of land sold for between $6 and $15 per acre. The fledgling town did not become the urban center its founders once hoped for, as the Southern Pacific Railroad bypassed Santa Ynez for a coastal route. Nevertheless, it blossomed into one of the Valley’s most inviting communities and continues to proudly serve the surrounding ranches, farms, residents and visitors to the region. The town’s historic roots are tended to at the beautiful Santa Ynez Valley Historical Museum and Parks-Janeway Carriage House. The Vineyard House has one foot in the past - in the best way. The restaurant is located in a Victorian home built in 1907, and Jim Sobell is a kind of throwback proprietor - always present, manning the stove or baking a pie, pouring wine, greeting guests. Speaking of guests, many have been coming in for as long as Chef Gabe has been cooking here - 17 of the restaurant’s 18 years. With two intimate dining rooms and a pair of decks shaded by ancient pepper trees (routinely earning the restaurant a “best outdoor dining in the valley” rating), the Vineyard House is the perfect place for lunch, dinner or a leisurely Sunday brunch. The extensive menu includes numerous classic dishes - crispy buttermilk fried chicken, shrimp scampi, a Brown Derby cobb salad and what Sobell describes as “a damn-good” bacon-wrapped meatloaf of beef, pork and veal. And don’t overlook pastas, pizzas with chewy homemade crust, and great desserts. Sobell serves classic dishes because his guests want them. “We try to accommodate,” he says. Surrounded by oak-studded hills and acres of farmland and vineyards, Los Alamos is only seven blocks long, yet boasts some serious shopping and culinary "cred". From the outside, Los Alamos looks a bit like a town that time forgot, but behind all of the historical buildings and vintage charm, it is obvious the town has kept up with the times and may even be a little ahead of the curve. The streets are dotted with a variety of award-winning restaurants, wine tasting rooms, one-of-a-kind art galleries, antique shops, and a fun bar dedicated to fine craft beer. Los Alamos was founded in 1876, when ranchers John Bell and James Shaw each allocated a half square mile from their newly purchased land for the town site. It was once a popular stagecoach stop and home to a depot for the narrow-gauge Pacific Coast Railway, which linked San Luis Obispo to Los Olivos. The former railway depot is the lone “survivor” of the Pacific Coast Railway depots and now fittingly houses one of the top ten antique malls in the state. A historic landmark, The Union Hotel first opened its doors to road-weary stagecoach travelers in 1880. Recently renovated, the hotel still welcomes overnight guests and operates a lively wine saloon.

We captured a recent one at the charming Buttonwood Farm Winery & Vineyard. options in the towns of the Santa Ynez Valley, it can be easy to forget about the rich, multifaceted sipping experience that awaits at tasting rooms in the wine country’s stunning countryside.
This is a place with little traffic, clean air, wide skies and pristine landscapes; where the habitat hosts deer, bobcats, hawks, rabbits, wild boar, squirrels, coyotes, wild turkeys and even bears. To taste wine here is to tap into the source, where grapes are grown, crushed and transformed; to experience first-hand the terroir that shape the wines; to really know what you’re sipping while sharing what has inspired the region’s winemakers for decades. A great way to experience it is by driving the beautiful Foxen Canyon Wine Trail. Starting just outside Los Olivos, the road passes stunning views and numerous wineries as it winds its way northwest for about 25 miles. So pack that picnic, break out that winecountry map and hit the road for an unforgettable day among the vines. Leaving Los Olivos and turning up Foxen Canyon Road, your first stop might be Andrew Murray Vineyards. Nestled among the oak trees, the site combines a beautiful tasting room that embodies a decidedly modern aesthetic and a family-friendly outdoor picnic area. “We’re going for good style and a good attitude,” said the winemaker during a quick break from the fall harvest. Established in 1990, Murray was a pioneer in Rhône varieties in Foxen Canyon and continues to focus solely on estate Rhônes made from grapes grown on 100 acres of vineyards located on a mesa above the winery. A short drive north leads to the 65-acre Koehler Winery. Cross the small bridge, pass the sign indicating a duck crossing, and drive between vineyards to reach the 20-year-old winery, whose 45-year-old Cabernet Sauvignon vines are among the oldest in the county. Koehler makes only estate-grown wines and sells nearly all of its 5,000-case production through its wine club and tasting room - so you have to come to get it. You’ll find a warm welcome here and fantastic picnicking on the shaded grounds, surrounded by native-plant landscaping. Continuing along the road, you’ll quickly arrive at 700-acre Fess Parker Winery & Vineyard, begun in 1989 by the actor and real estate developer known for playing Daniel Boone and Davy Crockett on TV. Parker’s children and grandchildren have followed him into the family-run business, which continues to exude the warm hospitality that characterized its founder. Sip in the beautiful high-ceilinged tasting room or on the new outdoor patio (the place for events and enhanced custom

tastings), and take in the expansive grounds. Enjoy a lazy afternoon picnicking and strolling beside vineyards of Chardonnay and Riesling. Back on Foxen Canyon, the road soon levels out and turns west. With a broad basin on your right, you’ll turn left into Zaca Mesa Winery, one of the oldest wineries in the area. Multiple grape varieties were first planted here in 1973; since then the focus has shifted to the Rhône varieties that do so well in this warmer, southern part of the trail. Many top local winemakers cut their teeth here before heading off on their own, and the first Syrah grapes in Santa Barbara County were planted here in 1978. A converted barn houses the winemaking operation and the expansive, well-appointed tasting room. There’s great picnicking under the oaks. Shortly after rejoining Foxen Canyon heading west, plan to detour just three miles down scenic Alisos Canyon Road to Martian Ranch & Vineyard, which produces biodynamic wines. (Think of it as organicPLUS). ET’s do not reside here; rather, the winery is named after owner Nan Helgeland’s sons, Martin and Ian. They do have fun with the Martian concept though - “UFOs Welcome Here” on their wine labels, and wines with such space-inspired monikers as Red Shift (Syrah), Stellar (Viognier) and UFOric (Albariño). Taste indoors in front of the ultra-high-tech winemaking facility, or outside while playing bocce or horseshoes. It’s a beautiful place to land. Back on Foxen Canyon heading west, the country continues to open up. Shortly, at a right-left bend in the road, you’ll Koehler Winery arrive at Tres Hermanas, established by Marvin and Paulette Teixeira on their cattle ranch in 2001 and named for their three daughters. Don’t be confused by the big “JT” on the barn; it’s the cattle brand that was used by Marvin’s parents. Wine club members can park their RVs on the property for free and then safely enjoy a full day or evening of tasting new releases. Tres Hermanas makes wines from its own Estate Syrah vineyard and also sources grapes from prime Central Coast vineyards. Your next stop is the stunning modern-barn-style tasting room and winemaking facility at Foxen Vineyard & Winery. Talk about microclimates: this 100-percent solar-powered winery is located at the transition between the warmer north-south-oriented portion of the route and the east-west-oriented part along the Sisquoc River, which is fanned by cool ocean breezes. That allows Foxen to grow different grapes that like slightly different climates - such as Chardonnay, Syrah, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot - in the same vineyard. After a visit here, don’t miss “The Shack,” the charming original tasting room located a bit

farther down the road. Continuing west, you’ll soon spot historic San Ramon chapel, built in 1875, and then immediately turn right onto Forest Rte 10N06. That leads to Rancho Sisquoc Winery, one of the oldest in Santa Barbara County. The first vines on the 37,000-acre ranch - Cabernet Sauvignon and Riesling - were planted in 1968, and grapes were pressed four years later. The view from the winery and the cozy tasting room - set among large sycamore trees - extends across the floodplain of the Sisquoc River to the 300 acres of vineyards climbing the slopes across the valley. They’re the source of grapes for award-winning Cabernets. Off Tepusquet Road Near the northwest end of the trail, drive through the largest estate vineyards in the region to reach Cambria Winery, established in 1987 and dramatically located on a high slope with expansive views. Here, in the coolest part of the trail and the northern hemisphere’s only east-west oriented AVA (Santa Maria Valley), the clone is the thing - grapes adapted to their precise terroir. Friendly, knowledgeable tasting room attendants will steer you through the nomenclature and tastings of the winery’s distinctive signature Chardonnay and Pinot Noirs, plus cool-climate Syrah, Pinot Gris and Viognier. Retracing the route back to Foxen Canyon Road heading northwest, take a left on Orcutt Garey Road and a right on Dominion Road. Your final stop, Cottonwood Canyon Vineyard & Winery, will appear on the right. This is another dramatic setting, and both the surrounding hills, the exquisite winery grounds and the earth-orange tasting room may be glowing in the afternoon light when you arrive. The age-worthy Pinot Noirs, Chardonnays, Bordeaux-style blends and other wines that are the specialty here rest in one of the few cave cellars in the area, which can be toured on weekends. Live music at the outdoor amphitheater in summer makes Cottonwood a fantastic place to relax at the end of a satisfying journey along the Foxen Canyon Wine Trail.

do cyclists look for in a vacation? Varied rides over world-class terrain with great scenery and little traffic, first-rate support, interesting attractions, excellent accommodations and the pleasures of civilization. No wonder so many riders from so far away choose the Santa Ynez Valley for a bike-centric getaway. Here, riders of every level and preference can find what they want. They can visit lavender and alpaca farms, disappear on scenic rolling roads or take on the “bucket list” climb up Figueroa Mountain. The following three companies can put you exactly where you want to be. The local in the mix is 10-year-old Solvang-based Santa Barbara Wine Country Cycling Tours operated by co-founder Corey Evans next to Dr. J’s Bicycle Shop. They rent out Specialized carbon road bikes and know the roads so well they’ve made the best cycling map of the area you can find. One-day and multi-day tour packages, as well as self-guided tours, are customized for the needs of any rider. Outings include a gourmet picnic lunch complete with artisanal cheeses, seasonal salad of local organic produce, and local fresh fruit. According to Owen Gue, owner of Montana-based Cycling House, the clients he brings to the valley tend to be “passionate, experienced riders whose main focus every day is being on the bike.” Most riders bring their gear, but Look and Pinarello carbon rockets can be rented. Guides are seasoned athletes. Cycling House guests normally stay at the lovely Ballard Inn and Restaurant, giving ready access to most any route without the need for cars, while providing excellent food and accommodations at day’s end. “Our feedback on the trips in the Santa Ynez Valley - the roads, the Ballard Inn, the routes, everything - is really good,” he says. Gray & Co. is a Toronto-based company offering high-end customized, guided, fully supported biking and hiking trips around the world. Founder Cari Gray says she keeps returning to the Santa Ynez Valley because, “It’s one of my favorite places to bike in the U.S. It’s friendly to cycling, the food and wine are terrific, and you can walk out the front door and ride in multiple directions.” The Fess Parker Wine Country Inn & Spa in Los Olivos is usually headquarters. “If there were more hotels like it in the world, my life would be easier,” says Gray. She often works with SB Wine Country Cycling Tours and encourages her guests to visit local restaurants and, of course, “drink the wine made from grapes grown in the vineyard they rode past that day.” A fine toast to wine-country cycling.

the River Course at Alisal, and La Purisima. All three are within a few miles of each other, as you make your way through the valley from Santa Barbara to the Central Coast. Just 15 minutes from Santa Barbara is the 6,939 yard par 71 Robert Trent Jones Jr. course, Rancho San Marcos; a course that Golf Magazine named one of the Top 10 golf courses in California to play and Golf Digest gives a 4 1⁄2 star rating. Set against the backdrop of the spectacular Santa Ynez Valley, the course is steeped in history, with the cart path on hole 17 being part of the actual Pony Express Route. The standout features are a fast pace of play, the post card perfect par 3’s and the firm and fast, undulating and perfectly maintained greens. The back 9 is a must not only for the challenging 18th hole, which has a dramatically elevated tee, but a view of the Valley that will literally take your breath away - pure nature at its best. Further up the road, is the 6830 yard, par 72 River Course at Alisal, an inviting course that is approachable from a player’s standpoint and offers banquet facilities and a renowned restaurant and bar for post-round enjoyment. Designed around four lakes and the Santa Ynez River, it presents its own set of challenges just keeping your ball out of the water. The rough between fairways is modest and still playable with extremely demanding holes, such as the 7th and the 10th. The 7th is a 438 yard, par 4 with a hazard to the right and a lake on the left, which plays into the prevailing winds to a wide and shallow slightly elevated green. The 10th hole is a par 4, No. 2 handicap with a narrow fairway, hazard on the left that generally plays downwind to a narrow green protected by a large bunker on the right. This hole demands two solid shots to get home in regulation. The last four holes showcase the Santa Ynez Mountains, with the 15th, an uphill climb

As the 20th century progressed and Solvang’s population grew, more buildings began to reflect Denmark’s farm-style architecture - the crossbeamed bindingsvaerk, timbers framing either brick or stucco and roofing of thatch made of wood shingles cut jagged at the edges. Windmills of all sizes catch the first and last light throughout the village. Danish tradition holds that the presence of a stork on a rooftop wards off lightning and brings good luck. Amid the Danish tableau of Solvang’s Mission Street stands Succulent, a casual, friendly, stylish indoor-outdoor restaurant where Executive Chef Carrie Mitchum turns out California coastal cuisine reflecting her fondness for game and southern comfort food. (The focus on meat is reflected in sculptures crowning a very cool wine rack.) You’ll find house-made charcuterie, specials like grilled venison and wild boar, delicious fried chicken, a straight-up steak with fries, braised short rib with grits and caramelized onions, bacon-wrapped pork tenderloin and grilled duck breast with duck confit and sweet potato-spinach soufflé. Stars of lunch-time sandwich line-up include grilled local vegetables, pulled pork, smoked pastrami, smoked BBQ meatloaf and a burger made with grass-fed Niman Ranch beef. This being the heart of the wine country, there are lots of food-friendly Central Coast bottles to choose from; blankets and heaters make the patio a preferred spot for sipping or dining even on cool nights. In November, Succulent began offering brunch on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and weekends (check the website for times), with a range of good things from eggs benedict and bourbon-vanilla French toast to short-rib hash and a collection of satisfying “Biscuit Sandwiches.”

A BUTTERY PIECE OF THE PAST The “Be here now” ethos has its place, but sometimes it’s nice when the best of the past is part of the present-day party. Just ask Bent Olsen. Every day when he goes to work at the family-run Olsen’s Danish Village Bakery, he carries with him four generations of Danish baking expertise - his own plus that from his father, his grandfather and his great grandfather. Bent always wanted to be a baker, and in 1970, he opened Olsen’s. Several decades later, not much has changed. “We’re an old-fashioned bakery, the original Danish bakery in Solvang, and we believe in nothing but high quality, so we use only the best eggs, milk, butter and flour,” he says. “We’re strictly a bakery and konditori [coffee house], selling only pastry and coffee; no sandwiches or salads.” Bent still bakes every day, focusing on fancy cakes. A corps of bakers who have been with Bent and his wife, Susy, from 10 to 35 years, makes sure that Olsen’s butter rings, kringles, coffee cakes, strudels, butter cookies and more provide the authentic taste of Danish baking and a pleasant peak into a living past.
