You can discover various types of wetland, bog islands, reed beds, rivers and lakes and the surrounding forests – the views are spectacular. In 1997, the nature reserve was included in the Ramsar List of Wetlands of International Importance, and since 2004, it has been a Natura 2000 area of Birds and Habitats Sites. You may notice various birds of international importance such as sea eagles, golden eagles, greater spotted eagles, lesser spotted eagles, ospreys, bitterns, black storks and snipes.

Children over 3 years of age can enjoy children’s trails and mini trails of the park. Toome Hill, the main building of the University of Tartu, historic buildings of the university and the cultural district around St. John’s Church are also among the pearls of the old town. The main building of the University of Tartu is one of the most outstanding examples of classicistic architecture in Estonia. The university’s historic architectural buildings can be seen while wandering around Toome Hill: Tartu Cathedral that houses the University of Tartu Museum, Old Observatory, Old Anatomical Theatre, a former barrack-building, and an infirmary where the Supreme Court of Estonia currently resides. When strolling in the park, you can enjoy a bit of nature in the middle of the city, walk across the Angel’s Bridge and Devil’s Bridge, rest on the Good Ideas Benches or cheer at your children at the playgrounds. In summer, an open-air concert by Vanemuine takes place at a natural amphitheatre in the heart of the city – the Kassitoome Valley behind the Toome Hill. During winter months, the valley is one of the best places for sledging. In the centre of the cultural district around St. John’s Church is one of the most unique examples of Gothic style medieval sacral construction in Northern Europe with its almost 1,000 terracotta sculptures. Close to the church, you can find the Antonius Guild and its courtyard where numerous summer concerts take place, Tartu Toy Museum which offers fun discoveries for some and a wave of nostalgia for others, 19th Century Tartu Citizen’s Home Museum, and the houses of Tampere and Uppsala, named after the twin towns of Tartu.

1 Tartu Old Town

The Old Town of Tartu is under National Heritage protection because of its historical and cultural significance. The most prominent features of the old town are the Town Hall and the Town Hall Square. Nowadays, the City Government of Tartu is situated in the Town Hall, but in past the building has been used as a bank, prison and the city board of weights and measures. The Town Hall Square is adorned with one of the most recognisable symbols of the city – a fountain known as the Kissing Students. A yellow National Geographic window and the Leaning House, which people call the Pisa Tower of Tartu, are also important sights at the square. Various joyous events and festivities take place in the Town Hall Square throughout the year.

Eras of different rulers have both influenced the local culture and inhabitants as well as made the area even more diverse and fascinating. The spirit and good thoughts of the place surprise lots of people, sometimes even the locals themselves. If you wish to know more about the wonders of Tartu and the countryside, then you ought to come and see for yourself!

The wonderful nature in the countryside and the city full of culture will charm visitors from both close and afar. The landforms, transformed by the melting ice sheet, have made the county a distinct and interesting region which attracted the Finno-Ugric peoples to settle in the area already 10 000 years ago. Tartu, which is the centre for the whole Southern Estonia, became the region’s most important city by joining the Hanseatic League in the 13th century.
