A city of lights, a city of gifts, a city of traditional delights… Truro is a treat for everyone at Christmas. WELCOME TO OUR GREAT LITTLE CITY!

THE CHRISTMAS COUNTDOWN

s no better way to switch T here’ on to Christmas than with

Truro’s City of Lights night on 23 November. Thousands line the streets for this annual festival, now in its 20th year, when giant lanterns are paraded through the city centre to mark the start of the festive season. School children, community groups and professional artists spend weeks making the spectacular creations, this year with a ‘Tell Me A Story’ theme. The city’s Christmas lights are switched on as the procession makes its way through the streets. Wending his way through Truro to get late-night shopping underway on 30 November will be the man himself: Santa will be

accompanied by Cornwall Hospice Care’s Santa Fun Runners, and you can meet his reindeer at Victoria Square, from 6pm. There’s a part for our fourlegged friends in any Christmas story, and on 7 December farm animals will throng the centre of Truro for the Primestock Christmas Show on Lemon Quay. Bring the kids to meet cows, sheep, ducks and chickens, and maybe a pig or two. A few days later on Lemon Quay it’s the turn of local food producers, artists and craftspeople, when The Victorian Christmas Market opens for business. Running from 1318 December, it’s well worth

dropping into if you’re hunting for something unique and handcrafted to put under the tree. And even if you’re not, the atmosphere is bound to get you in the festive mood, with the sellers all decked out in Victorian costume and playing their part.

With four late-night shopping Wednesdays available (on 30 November and 7, 14 and 21 December), you’ve got no excuse to miss out. Join the street stalls and town bands, youth bands and choirs performing on Lemon Quay, Boscawen Street, Pydar Street and Victoria Square, and make a memorable evening of your Christmas shopping. You’ll find lots of foodie, beauty and vintage gift ideas, and a little Christmas decoration inspiration, on the following pages.

Make sure you pay a visit to some of the newcomers to the city centre that are perfect for Christmas gifts. Busby & Fox on Princes Street has a stylish collection of women’s clothing, accessories and homewares. Wine merchant The Art of Wine in Nalders Court is a wine shop, art gallery and lounge bar. Check out its automated wine dispenser system that lets you choose from 16 wines and sample before you buy. Steamer Trading’s first

Cornwall store, on Pydar Street, has two floors of high-quality cookware, kitchen appliances and tableware, plus Cornish pottery and textiles. It's been pulling in the crowds since day one, so don’t miss out on a gift to inspire your favourite cook. While you’re in a foodie vein, drop by Truro Farmers’ Market on Lemon Quay for seasonal produce, locally-reared meats, artisan cheeses and Cornish seafood. It’s open every Wednesday and Saturday from 9am-4pm on Lemon 5

Quay, and until 9pm on late-night Wednesdays, and there are some extra dates for December. Treat yourself to something tasty while you’re out and about thinking of others. Midtown Deli & Cafe on King Street serves up festive doorstop cranberry, turkey and brie sandwiches, roast beef and caramelised onion rolls and the famous Midtown Nutella orange hot chocolate. Enjoy a stunning view of the Christmas lights on Boscawen Street while tucking into a Victorian-style high tea at Charlotte’s Tea House in

Coinage Hall, with sandwiches and cakes served on a vintage cakestand. Or take a break at Grounded on New Bridge Street, where they’re dishing up slow-roast pork with apple and crackling sandwiches, mincemeat and frangipane tarts, and gingerbread lattes. Remember to save the stress of finding a parking space and make use of the city’s Park & Rides. There are two Park & Ride locations at different ends of the city, with extra services being operated for late-night shopping and the City of Lights night.

festive season than the slapstick, songs and silly jokes of a traditional family panto? Jack and the Beanstalk at Hall For Cornwall between 6 and 31 December is a home-grown Christmas adventure starring Granville Saxton and our very own Kernow King. Oh, yes it is! If ballet is more your bag, head to Truro’s art deco showstopper, the Plaza Cinema, for a live performance of The Nutcracker by The Royal Ballet on 8 December. Christmas is all about family and community, and Truro Cathedral is right at the heart of things. There’s lots to enjoy: the cathedral’s huge Christmas tree, its Christmas lunches in the restaurant, the market stalls and music on late shopping 7

nights, or one of the many festive services and concerts. Highlights include an atmospheric candlelit Christmas concert on 3 December, the Big Christmas Sing on 9 December, and the Nine Lessons and Carols services on 23 and 24 December. Check the Events section for dates and details. There’s a busy programme at Truro Methodist Church, too. Events include a Christmas concert by the Cornwall Symphony Chorus on 3 December, an evening of traditional readings and carols on 18 December, and a telling of the nativity on a walk around the historic heart of the city on Christmas Eve. We can’t promise deep and crisp and even, but a winter walk in the National Trust’s Trelissick Garden is always a deep pleasure, with its magnificent woodland 8

trees and far-reaching maritime views. Father Christmas will be visiting throughout December when the garden and house will be magically lit up with twinkling lights. His team of trusted reindeer will also be taking time out to drop in on 3, 10 and 17 December.

FESTIVE NIGHTS OUT

s not forget the L et’importance of liquid

refreshment to any Christmas shopping spree. Mannings on Lemon Street (see page 22) and The Old Grammar School and Vertigo – both on St Mary’s Street – all serve cocktails that will warm your cockles. If a craft beer is more your style, Sonder opened on Princes Street in May. A cafe and bar over three floors, Sonder offers

a regularly changing range of craft beers and ciders, and international street food. At restaurant and wine bar Bustopher Jones on Lemon Street, your only difficulty will be choosing your tipple. Its new drinks menu features more than 80 innovative and unusual drinks as well as the usual favourites. The menu is separated into chapters, making it easier to navigate for the indecisive drinker or exhausted shopper: Tang & Twang, Silky Sours, Giggle Water, High Spirits, Something for Dessert, StoneCold Classics and 0% Proof. Using high-quality house spirits, homemade bitters and tinctures, the cocktails set out to delight the eyes and the tastebuds. The restaurant has two- and threecourse menus for Christmas parties, including pancettawrapped turkey breast and panfried pollack. At Saffron on Quay Street, the Christmas set menu includes Cornish scallops, seared sea bass, butternut squash arancini and char-grilled ribeye steak. Another lively Truro favourite for Christmas parties and family nights out is Sam’s in the City on New Bridge Street, where steaks, burgers, seafood, salads and music and film memorabilia are always the order of the day.

Cheers!

DISCOVER PANNIER MARKET

A butcher, a baker, a picture-frame maker… Traders and surprises of every kind await under the roof of Truro’s bustling indoor market.

P

annier Market is no-frills shopping at its best: a world of its own with every square inch devoted to the bargains, curiosities and specialist goods on display. From vegetables to vintage vinyl, sweets to soap, haberdashery to herbs and spices, there really is something for everyone here. It’s been a home for small independent traders for more than 30 years, but the building has stood on Back Quay for much longer. In the 1930s, it was a garage and workshop, and in the 1939-45 war it was used as a makeshift factory for Spitfire wings. When it first opened as a market, it was a chilly, open-ended place, but improvements and additions have

10

helped to create a warmer, more welcoming environment. The traders are as diverse as ever. Roach Fine Foods, which includes The Market Butcher, The Veg Patch and The Pick and Mix Shop, is a local, family-owned institution. The butcher sources a wide range of Cornish meat and cheeses, and is taking orders for Christmas. Its homemade hog’s pudding is a Cornish delicacy, made using a well-guarded family recipe. Pick up bags of goodness from The Veg Patch, the greengrocer that has as much fresh Cornish produce as it can lay its hands on. Look out for Celtic Flowers, which uses only the freshest materials and locally-grown

flowers to compose modern and traditional arrangements for every occasion, as well as Christmas wreaths, garlands and table decorations. For household essentials there’s Burgess China, with mugs, teapots and plates from ranges including Cath Kidston, Churchill, Blue Willow, Sophie Allport and Jamie Oliver. Burgess Bedding has a huge selection of bed linen, towels and household linen, and they embroider names and initials while you wait. Stitches is a haberdashery and wool stall, selling wool and knitting needles, fabrics and sewing accessories, buttons, beads and sequins. All About Frames stocks a range of picture frames from bare woods to the more traditional. Ready-cut mounts are available, as well as bespoke mounts and a cutting service. Truro Imaging is conveniently

located next-door − print photographs of any size here to fill your frames. Inscriptions offers engraved glass gifts for all occasions. It has a wide selection of crystal and glass, all of which can be engraved with your message while you wait. For the tea or coffee lover in your life, Tugboat Brews offers seasonal and classic loose-leaf teas and freshly-roasted coffee beans. Everything that you see and smell here has been ground, blended and bagged on the premises. Perfect for Christmas presents, Tugboat’s tea and coffee gift boxes fly off the shelves. Seasonal specials include rich, winter-warming teas, such as Gingerbread Chai, made with smooth vanilla rooibos, cinnamon and kibbled ginger, and spiced rum Christmas coffee. There are also ingenious tea infuser mugs for the office or tea on the go, easy-touse portable coffee makers and thermal cafetiere mugs – ideal bits of kit for your tea or coffee connoisseur. body products amid the hurlyburly of the market. This small independent produces hand-cut soaps, aromatherapy bath bombs, face and body scrubs, shower gels and soufflés, bath foams and salts, and body milks and yogurt, using natural ingredients. Soul and Soap offers beautifully-presented gift boxes for Christmas that can be bought off-the-shelf or made up in-store just the way you want from the shop’s range of handcrafted items. Put together a soap, scrub and soufflé for a fragrant treat no one could resist! If your household harbours a vinyl junkie, then this is the place to satisfy their craving. Music Nostalgia is exactly that: a not-so-secret stash of new and secondhand LPs and singles, plus CDs, music DVDs and posters.

There is high-quality browsing for every music taste and era. And if you can’t find what you’re looking for on their shelves, they offer an order service with instant quotes on price and availability. And when you need to refuel, there’s Fodders, where you can grab a coffee and bite to eat in the espresso bar downstairs or stop a little longer for lunch upstairs. The restaurant serves everything from a simple sandwich or baked potato to salads and daily specials, all prepared on the premises.

Put your name down for a hamper of local goodies, or a Christmas dinner food box with a free-range Cornish turkey, bacon, veg, cranberry sauce, a luxury Xmas pudding and cream – delivered to your door. here’s nothing nicer than clothes shopping with a friend. All that nattering, browsing and trying on takes me back to teenage years trawling the chains in Oxford Street with Cyndi Lauper blasting out of the radio. As I’ve got older (still love a dose of Ms Lauper), I’ve become more interested in the offerings of independent shops. Fortunately, Truro has a great choice of indie fashion outlets catering for all tastes and pockets. I met the owner of Plum Boutique, Sam Salvoni, while writing the seasonal fashion edit for Secret Truro. Trained milliner Sam has always had a keen eye for fashion and used to create bespoke headwear for royal garden parties – you’ll see some of her millinery blocks dotted around the shop. She launched Plum in Twickenham in 2008, and Plum Truro followed in 2012. You’ll find a good selection of European fashion in Plum, with premium denim brand Paige being just one of Sam’s favourites. Others include Dutch brands Maison Scotch and Rabens Saloner, along with Ilse Jacobsen boots and Nigella’s favourite ‘Bombshell’ dress by Katya Wildman. I’ve got my eye on a bang on-trend dark floral blouse from Rabens Saloner to wear on Christmas Day. Sam also has a lovely range of jewellery from Olia, Sandwich and Boho Betty. Plus, Plum is the only Truro stockist of Inlight Organic Skincare featuring butter-soft cleansers and soothing facial oils, and gift sets that make perfect stocking fillers. I’ve fallen in love with the AW16 range from Belgium’s Bellerose, which includes snuggly bomber jackets with patterned linings, soft knits and silky blouses with pie-crust collars. See – told you I was an 80s girl!

Festive Glam Christmas parties are all about sequins, glitz and LBDs. Find yourself a standout outfit for the season in one of the city’s vintage or secondhand shops.

Tootsie & Tiger is all about glamour. Strutting its stuff in Tinner’s Court, it’s a treasure trove of vintage clothing from the 1920s and upwards, including some high-end couture pieces. Inside you’ll find rails of striking vintage dresses for the day or evening, all hand-picked by Delia Hardwick, who has a background in fashion and modelling and comes from a line of actors and performers. There’s also a large choice of vintage shoes, hats, bags and jewellery, a colourful array of 1950s-inspired swing dresses, and a men’s section with good-quality suits, coats and jackets. The team offers a dressing service as well. If you’re looking 27

for an outfit for a themed party or event, they’ll sort you out with clobber to suit a certain era or vintage look, including outerwear, shoes and accessories. Combining original pieces and retro items, they’ll tailor your ensemble to suit your size, shape and budget. If your style is more ‘retro eccentric’ than vintage glamour, head to Enjoy Clothing in the People’s Palace. Also owned by 28

Nuala Parris of Rare Bits, Enjoy is like a big dressing-up box with clothes from the 50s to the present day. Rummage among the shop’s eclectic range of styles and you’ll come across glitzy party dresses to team with feather boas, masks and flamboyant headwear, 60s mini skirts with white go-go boots, and psychedelic 70s shirts – perfect for New Year’s Eve fancy dress ensembles. For label-loving fashionistas, Smart Exchanges on New Bridge Street is a must. Among its high-

quality secondhand designer and high street fashions you’ll find a selection of partywear, ball gowns and cocktail dresses from brands such as Gucci, Armani and Karen Millen, for a fraction of the price of new. And you can’t go wrong with the addition of a designer handbag or shoes. Whether you’re a vintage newbie or a seasoned secondhand shopper, give retro a go this Christmas. Healthy for your bank balance and the environment, it’s the most eco-savvy way to shop; and you’re bound to get brownie points for originality, too!

Pride and Prejudice Hall For Cornwall Following sell-out performances at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre, Pride and Prejudice comes to HFC in an adaptation by Simon Reade. As the Bennet sisters haplessly search for love in Jane Austen’s ultimate romantic comedy, it is Mr Darcy who unwittingly finds his match. Pride and Prejudice stars Felicity Montagu (Bridget Jones's Diary, Alan Partridge, The Durrells) as Mrs Bennet, and Matthew Kelly (Of Mice And Men) as Mr Bennet. Celebrating the legacy of Jane Austen as we approach the bicentennial year of her death in 1817, this is Austen “still dazzling after 200 years” (The Observer). hallforcornwall.co.uk 32

Truro City of Lights Parade and Christmas Lights Switch-On City Centre Nothing heralds the start of the festive season quite like the City of Lights, Truro’s midwinter lantern festival. Come and see a dazzling procession of willowstick-and-tissue lanterns, handmade by artists, schools and community groups, float through the city streets. This 20th anniversary parade, made possible with support from Truro City Council and Totally Truro Business Improvement District (BID), takes the theme of ‘Tell Me A Story'. Alongside the visual spectacle, City of Lights is a feast of music and dance including samba, brass bands and pipes and drums. The procession sets off from 34

the Richard Lander Monument, down Lemon Street onto Boscawen Street and along River Street. The lanterns will then loop around Little Castle Street onto Kenwyn Street, go through Victoria Square back to Boscawen Street, and make their way via Princes Street and Green Street to Lemon Quay. The parade will leave a city of lights in its wake, as the

Christmas illuminations, funded by Totally Truro BID, are switched on in tandem with the lanterns moving through the streets. To safeguard the future of this much-loved event, a series of new fundraising initiatives are being launched, with a Crowdfunder appeal, sponsorships, donations and collections on the night itself. cityoflights.org.uk

Christmas Eve Communion Truro Methodist Church A traditional service of Holy Communion. truromethodist.org.uk

This Christmas tradition started in Truro in 1880 and has since spread nationwide. The innovative ‘Nine Lessons with Carols’ format for carol services was the brainchild of the first Bishop of Truro, Edward White Benson, who adopted it for the first time at Truro Cathedral on Christmas Eve, 1880. The format quickly travelled to other churches and its place in history was secured when Eric Milner-White adapted it for King’s College, Cambridge, from where it has been broadcast almost annually on Christmas Eve since 1928.

NEW YEAR, NEW YOU

Get ahead of the New Year stampede and check out these havens for mind and body.

L

et’s face it, we all put fun before fitness over Christmas and New Year. And January always arrives with resolutions to correct the balance. Yoga and pilates are a way of restoring well-being without the need for pounding music or high-impact exercise, and these four studios in the Truro area welcome men and women of all ages and abilities. So there’s no excuse: beat the crowds and sign up! The philosophy of Cornwall Yoga Centre on Green Street is that by learning simple techniques, anyone can use yoga practices to improve the quality of their life. The centre is run by Aimee Blackman, an expert in using yoga for therapy. One-to-one sessions and regular classes in pregnancy yoga, seniors yoga, yoga for women, dynamic yoga and Hatha yoga are offered by a small team of dedicated yoga teachers. Cornwall Yoga Centre is open six days a week, with classes running in the morning at lunchtime, after work and in the evenings. At specialist pilates studio Pilates Hub, on the second floor of the Old Bakery Studios on Malpas Road, Susan King provides pilates apparatus instruction to small groups and in private sessions.

“Designed to improve balance, strength, flexibility and wellness” The peaceful, daylit, loft-style studio welcomes students of all levels from complete beginners to advanced. Susan practises pure pilates and says her teaching style is informed by current ideas about movement and anatomy, such as biotensegrity, biomechanics, natural movement and anatomy trains. Breathe Health and Fitness is a yoga, pilates and personal training studio in Robert Ope Stores off Boscawen Street. The studio, created by Dan and Ori Parnwell, specialises in hot yoga. Breathe Hot Yoga involves a series of classic Hatha yoga poses performed in a heated space with a bamboo

floor, and is designed to improve balance, strength, flexibility and wellness. The high temperature makes it easier to stretch your muscles, burn calories and detoxify your body. A ten or 15-minute drive from the centre of Truro, near Perranporth, is Lime House Yoga, a purpose-built yoga studio and retreat centre with stunning sea views, just a short walk from the beach. Founded and run by yoga instructor Jock Orton and his partner Emma Rowse, Lime House Yoga aims to give clients everything they’re looking for: peace, tranquility and space – and, at the workshops and retreats, great food cooked up by Emma. The studio has underfloor heating, and there’s a lawn area and decking for outdoor classes during the summer. There are weekly classes, workshops and retreats, some led by internationallyrenowned guest yoga teachers, for all ages and levels. Drop-in classes include mixedability Vinyasa yoga, holistic Hatha yoga and restorative Yin yoga, and the studio organises evening workshops on topics such as meditation, rounded off by a light supper. 61
