s no better way to switch T here’ on to Christmas than with

Truro’s City of Lights night on 23 November. Thousands line the streets for this annual festival, now in its 20th year, when giant lanterns are paraded through the city centre to mark the start of the festive season. School children, community groups and professional artists spend weeks making the spectacular creations, this year with a ‘Tell Me A Story’ theme. The city’s Christmas lights are switched on as the procession makes its way through the streets. Wending his way through Truro to get late-night shopping underway on 30 November will be the man himself: Santa will be

accompanied by Cornwall Hospice Care’s Santa Fun Runners, and you can meet his reindeer at Victoria Square, from 6pm. There’s a part for our fourlegged friends in any Christmas story, and on 7 December farm animals will throng the centre of Truro for the Primestock Christmas Show on Lemon Quay. Bring the kids to meet cows, sheep, ducks and chickens, and maybe a pig or two. A few days later on Lemon Quay it’s the turn of local food producers, artists and craftspeople, when The Victorian Christmas Market opens for business. Running from 1318 December, it’s well worth

dropping into if you’re hunting for something unique and handcrafted to put under the tree. And even if you’re not, the atmosphere is bound to get you in the festive mood, with the sellers all decked out in Victorian costume and playing their part.

Jack and the Beanstalk at Hall For Cornwall between 6 and 31 December is a home-grown Christmas adventure starring Granville Saxton and our very own Kernow King. Oh, yes it is! If ballet is more your bag, head to Truro’s art deco showstopper, the Plaza Cinema, for a live performance of The Nutcracker by The Royal Ballet on 8 December. Christmas is all about family and community, and Truro Cathedral is right at the heart of things. There’s lots to enjoy: the cathedral’s huge Christmas tree, its Christmas lunches in the restaurant, the market stalls and music on late shopping 7

nights, or one of the many festive services and concerts. Highlights include an atmospheric candlelit Christmas concert on 3 December, the Big Christmas Sing on 9 December, and the Nine Lessons and Carols services on 23 and 24 December. Check the Events section for dates and details. There’s a busy programme at Truro Methodist Church, too. Events include a Christmas concert by the Cornwall Symphony Chorus on 3 December, an evening of traditional readings and carols on 18 December, and a telling of the nativity on a walk around the historic heart of the city on Christmas Eve. We can’t promise deep and crisp and even, but a winter walk in the National Trust’s Trelissick Garden is always a deep pleasure, with its magnificent woodland 8

trees and far-reaching maritime views. Father Christmas will be visiting throughout December when the garden and house will be magically lit up with twinkling lights. His team of trusted reindeer will also be taking time out to drop in on 3, 10 and 17 December.

If a craft beer is more your style, Sonder opened on Princes Street in May. A cafe and bar over three floors, Sonder offers

a regularly changing range of craft beers and ciders, and international street food. At restaurant and wine bar Bustopher Jones on Lemon Street, your only difficulty will be choosing your tipple. Its new drinks menu features more than 80 innovative and unusual drinks as well as the usual favourites. The menu is separated into chapters, making it easier to navigate for the indecisive drinker or exhausted shopper: Tang & Twang, Silky Sours, Giggle Water, High Spirits, Something for Dessert, StoneCold Classics and 0% Proof. Using high-quality house spirits, homemade bitters and tinctures, the cocktails set out to delight the eyes and the tastebuds. The restaurant has two- and threecourse menus for Christmas parties, including pancettawrapped turkey breast and panfried pollack. At Saffron on Quay Street, the Christmas set menu includes Cornish scallops, seared sea bass, butternut squash arancini and char-grilled ribeye steak. Another lively Truro favourite for Christmas parties and family nights out is Sam’s in the City on New Bridge Street, where steaks, burgers, seafood, salads and music and film memorabilia are always the order of the day.

here’s nothing nicer than clothes shopping with a friend. All that nattering, browsing and trying on takes me back to teenage years trawling the chains in Oxford Street with Cyndi Lauper blasting out of the radio. As I’ve got older (still love a dose of Ms Lauper), I’ve become more interested in the offerings of independent shops. Fortunately, Truro has a great choice of indie fashion outlets catering for all tastes and pockets. I met the owner of Plum Boutique, Sam Salvoni, while writing the seasonal fashion edit for Secret Truro. Trained milliner Sam has always had a keen eye for fashion and used to create bespoke headwear for royal garden parties – you’ll see some of her millinery blocks dotted around the shop. She launched Plum in Twickenham in 2008, and Plum Truro followed in 2012. You’ll find a good selection of European fashion in Plum, with premium denim brand Paige being just one of Sam’s favourites. Others include Dutch brands Maison Scotch and Rabens Saloner, along with Ilse Jacobsen boots and Nigella’s favourite ‘Bombshell’ dress by Katya Wildman. I’ve got my eye on a bang on-trend dark floral blouse from Rabens Saloner to wear on Christmas Day. Sam also has a lovely range of jewellery from Olia, Sandwich and Boho Betty. 1. TREE DECORATIONS These raku-fired hanging stars, moons and hearts (£5) are by ceramicist Demelza Whitley, whose work is influenced by folk tales and myths and the everyday things in her life. She’s part of The Guild of Ten, which sells original work by a cooperative of craftspeople living in Cornwall.

Truro City of Lights Parade and Christmas Lights Switch-On City Centre Nothing heralds the start of the festive season quite like the City of Lights, Truroâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s midwinter lantern festival. Come and see a dazzling procession of willowstick-and-tissue lanterns, handmade by artists, schools and community groups, float through the city streets. This 20th anniversary parade, made possible with support from Truro City Council and Totally Truro Business Improvement District (BID), takes the theme of â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Tell Me A Story'. Alongside the visual spectacle, City of Lights is a feast of music and dance including samba, brass bands and pipes and drums. The procession sets off from 34

the Richard Lander Monument, down Lemon Street onto Boscawen Street and along River Street. The lanterns will then loop around Little Castle Street onto Kenwyn Street, go through Victoria Square back to Boscawen Street, and make their way via Princes Street and Green Street to Lemon Quay. The parade will leave a city of lights in its wake, as the

Christmas illuminations, funded by Totally Truro BID, are switched on in tandem with the lanterns moving through the streets. To safeguard the future of this much-loved event, a series of new fundraising initiatives are being launched, with a Crowdfunder appeal, sponsorships, donations and collections on the night itself. cityoflights.org.uk

The Victorian Christmas Market Lemon Quay Now in its twelfth year, the Victorian Christmas Market is one of the highlights of the city’s Christmas calendar, with almost 70 traders, producers and exhibitors at this six-day market on Lemon Quay, housed in a heated marquee. The innovative ‘Nine Lessons with Carols’ format for carol services was the brainchild of the first Bishop of Truro, Edward White Benson, who adopted it for the first time at Truro Cathedral on Christmas Eve, 1880. The format quickly travelled to other churches and its place in history was secured when Eric Milner-White adapted it for King’s College, Cambridge, from where it has been broadcast almost annually on Christmas Eve since 1928.

Breathe Health and Fitness is a yoga, pilates and personal training studio in Robert Ope Stores off Boscawen Street. The studio, created by Dan and Ori Parnwell, specialises in hot yoga. Breathe Hot Yoga involves a series of classic Hatha yoga poses performed in a heated space with a bamboo

floor, and is designed to improve balance, strength, flexibility and wellness. The high temperature makes it easier to stretch your muscles, burn calories and detoxify your body. A ten or 15-minute drive from the centre of Truro, near Perranporth, is Lime House Yoga, a purpose-built yoga studio and retreat centre with stunning sea views, just a short walk from the beach. Founded and run by yoga instructor Jock Orton and his partner Emma Rowse, Lime House Yoga aims to give clients everything they’re looking for: peace, tranquility and space – and, at the workshops and retreats, great food cooked up by Emma. The studio has underfloor heating, and there’s a lawn area and decking for outdoor classes during the summer.
