Reborn in June 2015 as a friendly, relaxed gastropub with a cool, creative vibe, The Thomas Daniell has quickly built up a loyal following with its modern take on classic hearty dishes. The independent, familyrun pub on Infirmary Hill has a style all its own, with quirky lighting, artistic focal points and scrubbed wooden tables.

It may have a traditional name, but The Old Ale House is reinventing typical pub grub with a fresh flair, using local, seasonal produce, sustainable fish and meat from higher-welfare farms. Pick your favourite from the new menu: fish and chips (featuring curried peas), sausage and mash, burgers, Primrose Herd pork chops and 30-day, dry-aged Cornish sirloin steak.

Opening at 10am, The Thomas Daniell serves breakfast (including a full English, Eggs Benedict and French toast), lunch and dinner seven days a week. Among the highlights are raclette (for sharing), Fish and Chip Fridays and a sumptuous Sunday lunch with slow-cooked roasts available from 12 till 8. There’s a £5 menu for the kids or, if you’re out with friends, a cocktail flight taster board with matching bar snacks.

There’s a fresh, home-grown approach to the ale, as well. This is the Skinner’s Brewery Tap, serving the full range of Skinner’s beers, brewed in Truro with Cornish barley, just a five-minute walk away. The craft ciders are local, as well, from the Cornwall Cider Company. There’s a strong brewery theme: upstairs is The Hop Store restaurant, serving the same menu in a dining room setting.

The Rising Sun is a warm and inviting pub just up Mitchell Hill, minutes away from Truro city centre. Recently fully refurbished, it has a growing reputation for serving delicious food from a varied menu with a fine-dining mindset. Hands-on owner Tom Hannon is a dedicated chef and passionate about using the best quality local ingredients, changing dishes and menus regularly to suit what’s in season.

There’s nothing school-dinner-like about the familyrun Old School Bar & Kitchen, despite its setting in a former Victorian school in Mount Hawke, a few miles to the west of Truro. No cold custard here: the menu of high-quality traditional dishes gets top marks. There’s a bulging specials board, too, to reflect the use of local, seasonal produce, with up to five starters and the same number of mains, refreshed every few days.

This is a proper local pub, though, with a traditional bar at the front offering an extensive wine list and a wide range of gins, as well as classic bar snacks such as pork scratchings – homemade, of course. The Rising Sun was highly commended in the VisitEngland Awards for Excellence 2016, Tourism Pub of the Year.

The conversion has produced a choice of dining areas, including a sunny terrace at the front, and preserved original features such as the fireplaces and floorboards. Blackboard signage, vintage class photos and old school wooden desks add fun references to the building’s past.

rom the pedestrian-friendly, cafe-cultured city centre to its riverside walks and award-winning, picnic-perfect gardens and parks, there’s no end of good reasons to spend a summer’s day in Truro. When the heat is on, you can enjoy shopping without dropping. Truro’s compact historic centre is perfect for a leisurely browse of top-name brands and fresh, independent outlets waiting to be discovered. Explore the summer collections at stores like The White Company, Jack Wills, Joules, Seasalt, JoJo Maman Bebe, White Stuff, Monsoon, Superdry, M&S and Debenhams, or seek out something unique at Magpie & Fox, Bishop Phillpott, The Vor Store, Plum, Preloved Boutique or vintage specialists Tootsie & Tiger.

On Wednesdays and Saturdays, there’s the treat of the Truro Farmers’ Market on Lemon Quay, a feast of fresh fare from around the county: breads, cheeses, chocolate, cakes, flowers, plants and preserves, as well as the finest fish and meat to sling on the barbecue. Enjoy a delicious morsel as you meander around the stalls, take a pew in the piazza or settle at one of the city’s cafes; in the summer months, there are eateries around every corner offering outdoor seating, where you can kick back and order a coffee, a sandwich or something sweeter. 5

Summer is the time to book a place on a walking tour of the city and see the sights in the company of an expert guide. Learn about the locally-born historical and portrait painter, John Opie (aka the ‘Cornish Wonder’), and the city’s links with the Titanic, explorers and famous entertainers. Tours are free for children and leave from Visit Truro Tourist Information every Wednesday throughout the summer at 11am. The daily tours of Skinner’s Brewery on the banks of the Truro River are also great fun (for grown-ups!). When the sun’s out, there’s no better way of whiling away an hour or two than in one of the city’s award-winning parks and gardens. In 2015, Truro won gold in the national Britain in Bloom Champion of Champions category, and summer sees the city’s green spaces ablaze with colour. Take your pick from the formal landscapes and Sunday bandstand entertainment of Victoria Gardens and Boscawen Park, with its open spaces and new shipwreck-themed play area. There’s also free children’s entertainment every afternoon in August, except Sundays, from 2pm at Hendra Play Area (see page 33 for more details). Too much to do in one day? Then make a weekend or week of it. Book in at one of Truro’s stylish city-centre hotels, a family-run B&B or a self-catering cottage. Or get into the summer spirit and pitch up at one of the outstanding rural campsites for caravans, motor caravans and tents that ring Truro and offer a great base for exploring the city and its surrounding district. 6

Hurrah, it’s summer! And what’s better than sitting in the sunshine, sipping on something cool and watching the world go by? Whatever you like in your glass, you’ve got to agree that the continental culture of alfresco refreshment is well worth adopting. Amanda Williams from Secret Truro tells us about her favourite local spots for a drink in the sun.

You’re spoilt for choice on Truro’s Lemon Quay, as the MI Bar and the Hall For Cornwall Cafe both spill out onto the piazza during the summer. Huge umbrellas make this an ideal place in case the sun gets too fierce or, whisper it, there’s a passing shower.

If it’s an old-school Cornish pub you’re looking for, then look no further than The City Inn on Pydar Street. You can’t beat sitting in a pub garden, soaking up the sun, with a pint of local ale to quench the thirst. Oh, and you can bring your dog along, too!

If you’re wanting a little trip further out of the centre, then pop along to Boscawen Park on Malpas Road for a bit of fresh air and a walk through the flower beds. To complete the park life experience, why not pull up a chair and watch the world go by with a cool beer at Trennick Mill?

It’s strange to think that this sunny courtyard in front of a school-turned-bar on St Mary’s Street was once home to hop-scotch and playground chatter between Latin and algebra lessons. Now the only critical thinking you’ll need to do is choose something from their delicious tapas and cocktails menu. Make mine an Espresso Martini!

You’ll find this gem in Castle Street and if a glass of fizz, accompanied by some freshly-caught seafood, takes your fancy, this is the place for you. Its south-facing terrace is perfect for soaking up some rays. Enjoy host Valerie’s warm welcome and look out for their special jazz and seafood afternoons running throughout summer.

For the ultimate sundowner, you can’t beat the Heron Inn at Malpas. Reach it by hopping in the car or taking a pleasant evening stroll along the Truro River. Sit and watch the boats bobbing on the tide and spot the herons on the opposite shore of Old Kea while you enjoy an evening drink.

VICTORIA GARDENS BAND CONCERTS

Take a procession of brass bands, throw in the occasional wind orchestra and saxophone quartet, and you have a perfect summer of traditional British bandstand entertainment in the park. Load up with a picnic and enjoy a lazy Sunday afternoon in Victoria Gardens, just a stroll from the city centre and with grandstand views of Truroâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s soaring viaduct. Every Sunday throughout the summer, from 2.30pm to 4pm, different bands from across the county will be bringing their own sound to the bandstand surrounded by lush lawns and colourful flowerbeds. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s plenty of seating and vital refreshments are served in the tea hut. Entry is free.

Cathedral catwalk to return with boutiques and brands

ruro Trend, the city’s annual fashion week, is set to turn heads again this October.

The week-long event is organised by Totally Truro Business Improvement District (BID) and highlights some of the best boutiques and brands in the city. This annual fashion week celebrates the quality and variety of fashion and beauty businesses in our great little city. An enviable range of independent stores, holding their own alongside better known high street labels, makes Truro a major draw for shoppers across Cornwall.

Many of Truro’s businesses take part in the event, ranging from the city’s newest womenswear boutiques to hair salons, shoe shops and perfumeries. In-store events will include mini-makeovers, live mannequin shows, exclusive canapé evenings, pop-up spas, jewellery valuations and daily discounts. The highlight of the week will be the return of the fashion show in Truro Cathedral on the evening of Wednesday, 5 October. isit Truro’s Lemon Quay today, and you would be hard pressed to imagine it as a working harbour: busy, dirty, smelly, full of swearing sailors and clanking machinery. But so it was, and I love to imagine the matelots running through the city’s many ‘opes’, having made the most of shore leave before their ship set sail again. The Truro river, a tributary of the Fal, is no longer navigable this far up, at least not to large vessels. However, you can enjoy a leisure trip in the direction of Falmouth, courtesy of Enterprise Boats. It’s a wonderful day out, whether with the family or with visitors, and is without a doubt one of my favourite things to do in the summer, especially on a warm, sunny day. Today, the river is a tranquil haven for pleasure boats and wildlife – I’ve done this trip on many occasions, and I’m sure I’ve seen a heron every single time. You’ll also glimpse the beautiful Tregothnan estate, a historic vehicle ferry (the King Harry, established in 1888) and working oyster beds; and with Falmouth being the third deepest natural

harbour in the world, there are usually a few vessels of jaw-dropping size moored up with a tale or two to tell. You can rely on the knowledgeable Enterprise crew to ensure you don’t miss a thing, thanks to the commentary and an ability to answer most off-the-cuff questions. If leaving from Truro, passengers gather at the Enterprise offices on Town Quay, by Morlaix Avenue. Depending on the tide, you might embark here or board a double decker bus (surely a highlight for little people) and travel down to the jetties at Malpas. If you fancy walking there or back, you could even enjoy a pint with a riverside view at The Heron, surely one of Cornwall’s most picturesquely situated pubs. It’s well worth investing in a Family Fal Mussel Card, which entitles two adults and three children unlimited travel on ferry, train or bus, for one to six days. Ferries also stop at Trelissick, where you can disembark and visit one of the loveliest National Trust properties in Cornwall – formerly home to the Copeland family, it has beautiful gardens, as well as five miles of dog-friendly parkland, woodland and waterside walks.

You can often sail direct from Truro to St Mawes, for some genteel supping or shopping, and from there can catch the petite St Mawes Ferry to Falmouth, or the even more bijou Place ferry, which is popular with South West Coast Path walkers as it takes them to the Place peninsula, saving a day’s walk around the creek. Our favourite trip took us all the way to Falmouth, where we got off at the Prince of Wales pier and walked through town to Harbour Lights, purveyor of fine fish and chips. The restaurant is especially popular with

families as the children’s lunches arrive in a seaside bucket – if they finish, they get to choose a spade to go with it. Cue clean plates all round. We had just enough time for a bit of shopping – vintage clothing and second-hand books being our particular poison – before heading back to the boat and back down the river to Truro. A fine day out – the only question is, when to plan the next one?

Head to Truro’s main green open space, Boscawen Park, on the banks of the Truro River, with its dedicated dog exercise area and attractive riverside walk. You can get there on foot from the city centre down Malpas Road along the river. Take a leisurely stroll through the city’s Victoria Gardens with your dog on a lead. Designed and created in 1898 to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria, the gardens span a steep south-facing slope and in typical late-19th century style feature a pattern of trees and shrubs interlaced with paths and flower beds. A large 18-acre site with an expanse of parkland and wildlife, Daubuz Moor, just off Moresk Road, is a haven for dogwalkers. Gifted to the city by Reverend Enys in 1977, it now acts as a nature reserve to improve habitats for all kinds of wildlife.

Managed by the Forestry Commission, Idless Woods offers a large area of mixed woodland and is an ideal stamping ground for dog-walkers, horse-riders and orienteering groups. There are large tracks and off-piste paths that trail through towering trees, and the remains of an Iron Age fort. The National Trustâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Trelissick Garden is a tranquil garden hidden on the banks of the Fal with magnificent woodland trees and far-reaching maritime views. Although guide dogs are the only ones allowed in the gardens, the estate has miles of woodland walks and open parkland that dogs of every kind can enjoy. www.nationaltrust.org.uk/trelissick Truro is the perfect city centre to visit with a pooch in tow. Dogs are allowed into many of the shops and selected eateries, including the Falmouth Bay Seafood Cafe on Castle Street, which welcomes dogs in the restaurant or garden between 12pm and 3pm, and The Caff, a new rustic-style cafe upstairs at the Cornish Food Box Company in Walsingham Place.

BLOODHOUND SUPERSONIC CAR 3 August to 30 October

Cornwall’s engineering past is being brought up to date with the arrival of the Bloodhound Supersonic Car which is testing uniquely at Cornwall Airport Newquay. Visitors will be able to view an interactive replica of the car that will attempt to break the land speed record by travelling at 1,000mph.

Environmental artist Tony Plant is a prolific creator of transient whole-beach sand drawings. For this exhibition, he has created a body of drawings, paintings and sketches based on the Cornish coastline. The work is rooted in the Cornish landscape and the experience of moving through it, one step at time.

Tony Foster is a British watercolour artist, based in Cornwall, whose landscape paintings are made on site, often in the most challenging and uncomfortable circumstances. This exhibition of ‘watercolour diaries’ made on location in the world’s wildernesses – mountains and canyons, rainforests and deserts, the Arctic and the Tropics – aims to inspire people to connect with and preserve Earth’s great untamed environments.

oodies from across the country will be flocking to Lemon Quay this September for the largest festival anywhere dedicated to Cornwall’s food and drink. The Great Cornish Food Festival is a three-day gastro extravaganza, where more than 100 different food experts and chefs will gather to celebrate Cornwall’s culinary riches and showcase why the county has gained a national reputation as a gourmet destination. Offering three days of eating, drinking, shopping and entertainment, the all-weather event, organised by Cornwall Food & Drink, has become a regular favourite for tens of thousands of people from all over the UK and beyond. 45

Street food pop-up stalls will keep visitors well-fed, and Cornwall’s array of artisan producers will deliver a bounty of the best food and beverages from around the county: bakers, butchers, breweries, cider makers, chocolatiers and cheese-makers will all be selling their wares.

Top chefs will entertain, inspire and share their secrets. Headlining this year are April Bloomfield from The Spotted Pig in New York City’s West Village, and Tom Adams from Pitt Cue restaurant, bar and brewery in London. The pair have teamed up to create a new Cornish venture

Chef Paul Ripley will be demonstrating how to cook country pâté with mustard, pickles and toast, and London Particular soup with crusty bread – the name of this classic, thick pea and ham soup comes from the peasouper fogs that used to engulf London until the late 1950s. 46

Paul is a renowned Michelinstarred chef with over 35 years of experience. He was head chef at Rick Stein’s Seafood Restaurant, and chef and owner of Ripley’s Restaurant and the St Kew Inn. Paul is currently overseeing the new Great Cornish Food Store’s cafe, deli and foodto-go area.

The Great Cornish Food Store opens this summer alongside the new Waitrose development at the Tregurra Park & Ride site on the eastern side of Truro.
