Destination “Charvak”

Air route connects Samarkand and Istanbul

The new tourist zone will attract investment of foreign and domestic partners and create a modern allure for tourists.

Uzbekistan and Turkey had agreed to develop aviation relations during the President Mirziyoyev`s visit to Ankara in October 2017.

“Charvak” - the first free tourist zone in Uzbekistan, will be established within the territory of the Chimgan-Charvak resort and recreation zone in Tashkent region.

“Uzbekistan Airways”, Uzbekistan’s national airline started regular flights on the route “SamarkandIstanbul-Samarkand”. Flights along this route are scheduled on Mondays and Thursdays, with the modern “Airbus A320” and “Boeing-757” airliners.

Currently, “Uzbekistan Airways” makes daily Tashkent-Istanbul-Tashkent flights, while the SamarkandMoscow-Samarkand flights are operated on weekdays.

Meanwhile, the National company plans to introduce a new destination from Samarkand to Paris. The first flight will be carried out in 2018 as part of a conference of travel companies in the Paris region. Flights to the French capital will broaden the horizon and coverage of the national air carrier.

The general direction of the zone development is to build up “Charvak” as a world-level tourist district where various recreational, cultural shopping and entertainment facilities blend well with its ecological environment.

The zone will also adopt measures to improve tourists safety including via introduction of video surveillance and warning systems.

Uzbek student becomes cultural ambassador in Japan Uzbekistan to participate in FITUR exhibition Madrid will host the 38th international tourism fair FITUR-2018 on January 17-21, 2018, which will be the first tourism event of the year.

During this event, Uzbekistan’s stand will showcase tourism potential of the country. The State Committee of Tourism Development of Uzbekistan, “Uzbekistan Airways” NAC, “O‘zbekiston Temir Yo‘llari” railway company, as well as travel agencies will present the stand.

Uzbekistan will also participate in the 52th International Tourism Fair ITB Berlin-2018 on March 7. ITB introduces all segments of the tourism industry: international tourism federations, national and regional tourism organizations, travel and transport agencies and tour operators, hotels, insurance companies and others.

The third huge tourism event of 2018 for Uzbekistan will be Izmir International Fair (IEF), opening its doors for the 87th time in August.

Kokusai Rikai of Japan’s MEXT — Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology and Tokyo Metropolitan Government announced Fakhriddin Ergashev, student from Uzbekistan as the best teacher of the year. Fakhriddin topped the rating of 200 foreign students from nearly 50 countries, who had taught classes about their countries to Japanese schoolchildren.

The winner of the governmental grant is currently taking International Relations master’s courses at Tokyo University of Foreign Studies.

Uzbekistan improves position in Doing Business 2018 Doing Business 2018 report ranked Uzbekistan on 74th place among world’s 190 countries, where it moved 13 places up. Moreover, the Central Asian nation was also included in the Top 10 improvers, based on reforms undertaken. Overall, the country improved its position in six of ten indicators.

Uzbekistan carried out reforms in such spheres as starting business, dealing with construction permits, electricity, tax and protecting minority investors. It took the 11th place on starting business ahead of the United States, Germany, Spain, Italy, Denmark, and others. Uzbekistan moved 56 positions up to 27th place on the indicator of getting electricity, and improved its position on indicator “Dealing with Construction Permits”, placed 135th.

Samarkand City Modern Tourist Zone The territory of this new tourism zone will include hotels, cottages, cultural & recreational and shopping & entertainment facilities.

Uzbekistan issued the program of accelerated development of the tourist potential of the city of Samarkand and Samarkand region, thus Samarkand City will be transformed into a modern tourist zone by 2020 jointly with foreign investors.

Government and stakeholders are thinking about providing conditions for evening leisure of tourists, including annual thematic festivals: Samarkand nonlari, Samarkand hunarmandlari, Milliy taomlar, Sharq shirinliklari.

Government initiatives envision the creation of new tour-

ist routes and development of various types of tourism: ecological, scientific, extreme, gastronomic, and others, as well as modernization of transport service system.

The territory of the rowing channel in Samarkand district is going to host sports events and recreation in near future. The zone will include gyms, sports grounds and swimming pools where year-round training camps will operate.

Samarkand city is to have hotel complexes of family type and cottage community, other recreational infrastructure facilities, including water parks for family holidays of locals and tourists from different parts of Uzbekistan and the world.

The project will also improve the territory of the city and restore the Imam al-Bukhari complex in the Paiarik district, Hazrati Davud pilgrimage sites in the Nurabad region, Gavsul Azam in the Urgut district and others.

KEEPING IN VIEW EVER CHANGING TRENDS IN INTERNATIONAL POLITICS, ALLIANCES AND COUNTER-ALLIANCES, HOW MUCH SIGNIFICANCE DOES JAPAN GIVE TO UZBEKISTAN IN ITS FOREIGN POLICY? Central Asia, including Uzbekistan, has a geopolitically important role, therefore, Japan believes that this region needs an open, stable and independent development. The most populous in Central Asia with 32 million people, Uzbekistan has

prioritized relations with the Central Asian countries and he is actively working to strengthen them. The “Central Asia + Japan” format was initiated to promote regional cooperation for the stability and development. The chosen diplomacy of Uzbekistan and the goals of “Central Asia + Japan” coincide.

UZBEKISTAN AND JAPAN HAVE ENJOYED EXCELLENT RELATIONS SINCE 1992, WHEN DIPLOMATIC TIES WERE ESTABLISHED. WOULD YOU LIKE TO SHED SOME LIGHT ON THE PRESENT BILATERAL SITUATION BETWEEN

UZBEKISTAN AND JAPAN? Over the 25 years of cooperation bilateral relations between the two countries have been developing successfully.

The joint statement, signed during the official visit of the prime minister Shinzō Abe to Uzbekistan in 2015, on extending and expanding the strategic partnership between the Republic of Uzbekistan and Japan documented the

significance of further expansion of multilateral relations between the two countries in the spirit of the 2002 Joint Declaration on Friendship, Strategic Partnership and Cooperation and the 2011 Joint Statement of the Republic of Uzbekistan and Japan. I would like to express my respect to the first President Islam Karimov for his significant contribution to stregthening the friendship relations with Japan over all these years. Without efficient leadership of Islam Karimov, it would be impossible to build favourable relations of this kind. I sincerely realize that Mr. Shavkat Mirziyoyev places high em-

However, in recent years, Japanese economic circles have a growing interest in the potential of Uzbekistan, and tendencies in accepting orders by Japanese companies for large-scale economic projects of the private sector are also increasing. These tendencies were promoted by the visit of prime minister Shinzō Abe to Uzbekistan in October 2015. According to the statistics of the Japanese side, the volume of trade between the countries was about $260 million in 2016. Currently, the projects on modernization of Navoi and Turakurgan TPSs, Ferghana combined heat and power plant with advanced Japanese technologies are implemented. Talimarjan TPP and Tashkent CHP are in operation.

Another activity is the project on human resource training that we have carried out for almost 20 years.

Annually Japanese universities admit 17 civil servants, about 300 of whom came back to Uzbekistan and conducted their professional activities. To support the social sector. There is also the project for the provision of Japanese medical equipment to the multidisciplinary medical centre in Navoi. Granted aid to small-scale social projects, in particular, schools and hospitals equipping has sponsored approximately 10 projects per year.

As for private investments, Japanese companies have received orders for development projects of the terrestrial digital broadcasting network and the construction of a new plant for the production of chemical fertilizer in Navoi.

This plant is one of the last large-scale private joint economic projects and will become an important step in the development of economic relations between the two countries. I hope Japanese companies will continue to participate in major projects, including information and communication technologies.

Uzbekistan has many historical sights: Samarkand, Bukhara, Khiva, but the most famous among them is Samarkand. In 2016, four charter flights were organized from Japan to these three cities, and this year charter flights reached ten. I also know that next year this number will increase. Uzbekistan is an attractive tourist destination, but it is necessary to develop tourism infrastructure. This is crucial for Japanese tourists — I hope the tourist flow will increase.

This year Uzbekistan and Japan are celebrating the 25th anniversary of diplomatic relations. The exchange of letters on January 26, 1992 between the Foreign Ministers of the two countries marked the beginning of fruitful bilateral cooperation.

Japan recognized the Independence of Uzbekistan on December 28.

Relations between two countries have been progressing in the spirit of the Joint statement on friendship, strategic partnership and cooperation.

Japanese parliamentary league of friendship with Uzbekistan and the League of Friendship: “Japan’s Democratic Party – Uzbekistan” started its activity.. In turn, inter-parliamentary group “The Oliy Majlis - Parliament of Japan” operates in Uzbekistan.

The country offices of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) opened to assist to the establishment of contacts between the countries’ business and public entities and provide grants and technical assistance.

Uzbekistan and Japan share an interest in expanding investment relations, financial and technical cooperation, in deepening the direct contacts and fruitful partnership between business circles.

The investors from the Land of the Rising Sun want to get as much informed as possible about opportunities of doing business in Uzbekistan.

H

ere is a significant role of the representative office of the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) in this.

JETRO is an important source of data and support for Japanese businesses, thus this organization is popular among business circles that want to have networking on a global scale.

Its representative office in Uzbekistan has operated since its opening in October 2000, mainly aiming to settle business partnership between enterprises of both countries, to develop trade

relations, to attract Japanese investors into a variety of economic spheres of Uzbekistan.

The turnover between the countries is growing dynamically. The total volume of governmental loan of Japan had already exceeded 2,5 billion JPY. These funds are financing grand projects: the modernization of Navoi and Turakurgan thermal power stations, as well as Tashkent thermal power plant.

One of the unique projects with Japanese funds is the joint venture producing trucks and buses under the

ISUZU brand within the Samarkand automobile plant.

“This project can be considered as the collaboration of common interests of both countries. Local producer is interested in opportunities of import substitution, Japanese investor –in benefits and safety provided by the government”, –Manabu Shimoyashiro, General Director of JETRO Tashkent noted.

In order to expand economic exchange, Mr. Shimoyashiro mentioned that sides need to focus on raising awareness. Unfortunately, Japanese entrepreneurs do

not have a full picture of the business climate in Uzbekistan.

“It is necessary to talk as much as possible not only about the touristic potential of Uzbekistan, but also pay attention to the attractiveness of the country in business sphere as well. Effective way of developing this direction is holding showcases about Uzbekistan, accenting on its key facilities”, – Mr. Shimoyashiro pointed out.

For example, since 2014 the organization initiated Volume Zone Business Mission, a new project for the development of Japanese and Uzbek companies in comsumption of goods among people with average income. JETRO provides Japanese companies with information about economic potential of consumer market of Uzbekistan and supports import of local products in Japan.

Moreover, the Trade Tie-up Promotion Programme (TTPP) is successfully functioning for quick search of partners and linking relations between enterprises.

“However, I would like to point out that only exact and specific data attract Japanese entrepreneurs. There is a

high likelihood, they will be interested in investing on the projects that have a prepared business model, where the demands in Uzbekistan and solutions for them as well as the way of carrying out the business and the return to the investor are indicated”, – General Director of JETRO Tashkent said. “It is not easy to say which spheres of Uzbek economy would be priority, though it is possible to assume which directions can be realistic.”

Considering the high costs for labour force and other factors, Japan is striving for settling production of goods needed in Japan beyond the country’s borders. Textile and fruit and vegetables spheres are the most promosing ones in Uzbekistan.

Regarding fruit and vegetables production, as is well-known, food security has always been in the first place in Japan and this trend, due to the growth of the living standard, is expanding to neighbouring countries. For instance, China has become attentive to food security matters of local and imported production.

Mitsubishi plans for business expansion in Uzbekistan Ruslan Ramazanov

Japan’s Mitsubishi Corporation is one of the first foreign companies started its activity in Uzbekistan.

Since the opening of the representative office in 1993 in Tashkent, the company has been successfully presented on the Uzbek market as a reliable business partner and supplier of state of the art technologies in the energy sector and chemical industry. The general manager of the representative office Mr. Tetsuya Sugita in his interview to Visit Uzbekistan discloses the company’s strategy, and shares his impressions of living in Uzbekistan.

WHICH AREAS OF YOUR ACTIVITY IN UZBEKISTAN ARE THE MOST SIGNIFICANT FOR THE COMPANY? In the medium term, we are mainly focusing on promotion of infrastructure and industrial projects. It means those projects that are important to the development of Uzbekistan. We are currently engaged in modernization of Navoi thermal power station (TPS) and construction of Turakurgan TPS. Using the example of deliveries of combined cycle gas turbine units for TPS, which successfully proved its quality; our company has contributed to the country’s energy efficiency. We are also participating in the construction of a plant in Navoi for the production of ammonia and carbamite.

WHAT COULD YOU SAY ABOUT ALTERNATIVE ENERGY? IT IS A VERY PROMISING AREA IN UZBEKISTAN.

WHY?

Of course, we are keen on this direction. We also realize that the new government wants to diversify the economy, as well as the energy sector, by increasing the share of alternative energy sources in it. We have good relations with many leading Japanese investors and companies which own such technologies.

Many factors influence the decision making process, and it takes a long time. Currently, this project is in its first phase, but every year we are planning to expand the territory. In addition to business activity, we aim to engage with local people. We are happy to work with them. As you know, we have a Japanese association in Uzbekistan. In March, we held an event dedicated to cultural exchange in one of the mahallas of Yunusabad district. There was a tree-planting ceremony as a symbol of friendship between our people.

WHAT HAVE YOU DISCOVERED IN UZBEKISTAN? HAS YOUR PERCEPTION OF THE COUNTRY CHANGED? I have been in Uzbekistan already for four years and seven months and travelled almost the whole country. Uzbekistan has a long history and rich culture. I am impressed by all the cities I visited, especially by Navoi, Bukhara, Samarkand, Namangan and Ferghana. The most interesting thing is that in every region you meet different people, culture, traditions.

You can enjoy the local cuisine, which differs from one region to another. It was very interesting for me to observe such diversity.

IT IS NOT A SECRET THAT THE JAPANESE AND UZBEK PEOPLE ARE HARD WORKERS AND RESPECT THEIR HISTORY. IN YOUR OPINION, ARE THERE ANY SIMILARITIES THAT UNITE US? I assume that there are similarities between the people of Uzbekistan and Japan - both nations respect the older generation. This was the first thing I noticed. Other commonalities are modesty, politeness, and kindness. We also have a cordial sense of hospitality to guests and foreigners.

I was impressed by this and think it is very important for tourism development. People will always be happy to visit such a country. This is a strength of Uzbekistan.

WHAT COULD YOU SAY ABOUT THE CHANGES DUE TO THE RECENT ECONOMIC REFORMS AND THE POLICY OF CURRENCY LIBERALIZATION IN

UZBEKISTAN?

Of course. I personally feel significant changes and assume that it marks shifts towards a better future – a completely new Uzbekistan. Liberalization of monetary policy provides more confidence. I would like to point out another important thing - stability. I believe that we should not rush into a decision of important issues. This is a good sign that Uzbekistan is developing rapidly, but on the other hand, we should not forget about sustainability.

Today, we are ready to support Uzbekistan. Like the other foreign partners, we carefully study the situation, its stability and processes taking place in the country. This is critical for a long-term activity. We think Uzbekistan is on the right path. What is more, it is essential for us that there will be transparency and predictability of reforms.

WHAT ABOUT CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY PROJECTS? One of the last social projects was implemented together with Murad Buildings developers company. We jointly repaired the Japanese language Department of Tashkent State Institute of Oriental Studies. Also in Navoi, a reforestation project is

WHAT DO YOUR RELATIVES USUALLY ASK YOU TO BRING FROM UZBEKISTAN? I like to present gifts for my friends and relatives - textile, traditional dolls, canned plov. Everyone is happy to receive such national souvenirs. Another important thing for the Japanese is that we already recognize people from Uzbekistan as close ones. As you know, in Tashkent’s Yakkasaray district there is a cemetery of Japanese soldiers who were exiled to the USSR during the Second World War. There were around 580,000 soldiers, 25,000 of whom were exiled to Uzbekistan.

Uzbek people treated them with kindness, and this was a manifestation of trust and friendship between the nations.

One of my close friends Mr. Jalil Sultanov, director of the Museum of the Memory of Japanese Internees, collects household items used by those soldiers. When the prime minister of Japan H.E. Mr. Shinzō Abe visited Tashkent, he personally expressed his respect and gratitude to Mr. Sultanov.

During the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020, Uzbek athletes will live in the city Maizuru in Kyoto Prefecture. It has a symbolic meaning: Maizuru was a key port for returning Japanese soldiers from continental Asia. I am looking forward to Uzbek athletes and will support them, if I am in Tokyo.

Strengthening the cooperation between Japan and Uzbekistan, the development of business management and entrepreneurial capacity of Uzbek citizens and expansion of socio-economic relation are the aims of the Uzbekistan-Japan Centre established in 2001. In 2007, the Centre opened a branch at Bukhara State University. UJC is open to a wide range of visitors including students, alumni, teachers, entrepreneurs and all those who wish to learn more about Japan and take part in the cultural exchange between two countries. celebrated its 10th anniversary, the Uzbek-Japanese Center has been visited by more than 1 million people. We also have similar centers in Cambodia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Mongolia, Myanmar and Vietnam. We support the developing countries to promote business, human resources to help move towards a market economy.

When we started our work, we noticed a big gap in knowledge about Japan. In order to strengthen mutual ties, as well as to inform the citizens of Uzbekistan, UJC conducts a number of cultural and educational events: fairs, seminars, exhibitions.

Uzbekistan has a lot of historical monuments and places, like Samarkand, Khiva, and my favorite ones Tashkent, Bukhara, as well as Buddhism places that attract Japanese tourists. Among other things, there are good opportunities to develop gastronomic tourism. I tried your cuisine – plov, shashlik and

The State Academic Bolshoi Theatre named after Alisher Navoi is the leading theatre of Uzbekistan, the pride of the country, and the biggest one in the territory of Central and Southeast Asia.

I

n 1939, after the premiere of the first Uzbek opera “Blizzard” by the young composers Mukhtar Ashrafi and Sergei Vasilenko, the construction of the new theatre building started. The world-famous architect, academician Alexey Shchusev was commissioned to design and supervise the construction.

He was also the author of the wellknown Moskva hotel, Komsomolskaya metro station, Red Square’s Lenin Mausoleum.

he theatre`s appearance elegantly blends the design philosophy of a classical theatre building and traditions of oriental architecture. The 1500-seat theatre house has high acoustic qualities; a huge crystal chandelier hangs from its ceiling. The famous artist Chingiz Akhmarov covered the walls of the foyer with paintings that depict scenes from Alisher Navoi’s poetry. Yet the most festive are six lobbies decorated with gunch stucco carvings.

he construction was in full swing when World War II began. The work was temporarily stopped and it resumed in 1945, with Japanese prisoners of The Kwantung Army being used as labour force. In 1947, the Alisher Navoi State Academic Bolshoi Theatre opened its fretted doors to the audience.

Karakalpakstan

Kashkadarya and Surkhandarya

The costume of Karakalpak women is considerably different from the women’s clothes in other regions of the country with its original ornaments keeping an interesting story behind each running cross-stitch. Due to a cold climate and hilly area they wear wool fabrics. Another special feature about Karakalpak women ethno style is the accessories: huge red stones, covering the massive metal neck ales. Karakalpak women do not wear doppi – which commonly can be found in other regions of Uzbekistan, their headwear is saukele. Saukele is a high headgear covered with red cloth and richly decorated with metal buckles, colorful stones and beads.

These areas are the hottest ones in the country and ethno clothing is defined by its climate.

The inhabitants of Kashkadarya and Surkhondarya regions wear massive multi-layered clothes wrapping the head and body with paranja and headwear made from headscarfs rolled on top of another as a symbol of woman’s age. The more headscarfs a woman wears on her head in turban shape, the older she is. And you will never go wrong with the embroidery: yellow, red, orange, green – all colours of the rainbow!

Khorezm Traditional women`s wearing in Khorezm province is famous with its chapans –handmade caftans covered with specific stitches. Khorezm women used to wear it with an inner dress made from natural silk - shoyi atlas. Usually chapans are bordered by a handmade decorative tape - jiyak. This is one of the biggest differences of Khorezm clothing. Headdress is another main element of the traditional Uzbek dress. It is quite special – a long romol – shawl topped with lachchak, headgear which is embroidered with coins. The same coins could be found in the accessories as well – necklaces, earrings and others.

Samarkand and Bukhara The women`s ethnic suit of these regions consists of wine red velvet fabric ornamented with golden thread –zardoz chapan. If the headwear of other regions is decorated by jeweler – zargar, headwear of Samarkand and Bukhara is made by zardoz – embroiderer of golden tread chapans, heavily covered with symbolic patterns and named peshonaband. Samarkand woman could wear ikat dresses as well while Bukhara – plain colour dresses with golden chapan. Another common detail is peshkurta – front decoration embroidered with golden treads.

Soup to warm up Uzbekistan is a country that does not have real snowy winters. People go to the highlands to see the snow; artificial New Year trees are set up to hold celebration, and even Santa walks without mittens and big boots.

hakhrisabz is a birthplace of the great Central Asian ruler and commander Amir Temur. Here the conqueror spent his childhood and youth. During his rule he gathered in his homeland skilful masters, who built palaces, mosques, mausoleums. Great scientists and poets Navoi, Jami, Ulugbek got inspired and created here in the 15th century. Amir Temur commanded to surround “Green City” with a new fortress wall and became a trade and craft center, as well as a city of science and culture. Large-scale restoration and construction works continue to embody the traditions of great masters.

It’s all about the meat!

W

hy do you think Temur’s army was so strong and invincible? It’s all about the meat! The army had plenty of it, but there was no time for cooking, so during the campaigns the riders simply put a piece of raw meat under the saddle. The meat was softened by pressure and partially baked.

Was it tasty? Ask the Tartar steak fans. Calm down! You won’t be served raw meat, but you can taste a wonderful dish “kazan kabob”.

You can try it in every city of Uzbekistan, but only in the Kashkadarya region this dish is prepared with the observance of all technologies. Pieces of young lamb cooked with spices and wrapped in branches of softwood, then they are hung on special hooks in the oven - tandoor, which should be pitted. For the best preparation of the meat the cook covers the pit with an iron sheet and with sand on top, so that you will not see even the smoke. As a result, the meat becomes moist and melts in the mouth. And, of course, you will be offered local wine. Amazing wines “Shirin”, “Vassarga”, “Cabernet-liqueur” were awarded gold and silver medals at international exhibitions.

fter a hearty meal, you can continue your sightseeing tour visiting one of the most magnificent monuments of the Temurid epoch of the late 14th and early 15th centuries - the Ak Saray White Palace. Then have a look at a huge blue dome of the Kok-Gumbaz mosque, the Dorus-Saodat and Dorut- Tillyavat monumental complexes that were designed to turn the rulers native city into the second capital. Layers of many metres in length of the ancient town, found by archeologists, show the ancient history of the city, which survived the campaigns of the Persian kings, the troops of Alexander the Great, the uprisings that lasted more than 25 years.

n the mountains of Shakhrisabz, you cannot only relax, but also check the truthfulness of the legend, which local people like to tell. An evil shah lived near the town. He loved power and was very superstitious. Once he was foretold that a boy would be born in the foothill kishlak (village), and he would conquer almost the entire world. The shah was frightened and ordered to kill all the babies in the neighborhood, but one baby survived. His mother ran into the mountains and hide in a cave. This boy was Amir Temur. The legend says that the son and the mother lived in the cave for several years, and food and water appeared as if by magic. There is another legend also related to the cave.

While preparing for military campaigns, Amir Temur and his comrades found shelter in this cave. This is an incredible historical site, located 80 km far from the Gissar Range, decorated with stalactites, stalagmites, crystals like flowers and a small lake. Legends are legends, but the picturesque cave does exist.

The land of masters

ncient Shakhrisabz, as a traditional center of folk arts, was famous for its embroidery. Traditionally, every bride should embroider a suzani for her dowry before the wedding. The girls character was determined by her technique. If the canvas was full of many small patterns, then the girl is hardworking, because the embroidering of small details needs more patience. Craftswomen of Shakhrisabz surprise with a complex small plant ornament.

Suzani and clothes were embroidered, as well as many products for the traditional interior. The finished product can be read as a book, so that each ornament has its own meaning and magical power.

Shakhrisabz embroidery is decorated with a large medallion in the form of a flower rosette in the middle of the field. Also, the masters give attention to floral motifs and decorative design of the product, which more closely look like a carpet, rather than an embroidered panel picture.

Uzbekistan is one of the cradles of the world’s civilization. A trip to Uzbek archaeological monuments is an excellent opportunity to dive into the history of this beautiful land full of secrets. This article reveals links and the results of a long-term friendship and cultural exchange between Japan and Uzbekistan.

In 2002, Japanese artist Ikuo Hirayama, a well-known for his Silk Road paintings, opened the International Caravanserai of Culture in Tashkent. The idea of establishing a center was born in 1999. At first, Ikuo Hirayama wanted to continue archeological explorations of the Uzbek historian Bakhodir Turgunov in Dalverzintepa, but then found it more useful to establish an international scientific, training, cultural and educational center.

The idea was supported by the government of Uzbekistan. Currently this unique center is regulated by the Academy of Arts of Uzbekistan. Thus, the International Caravanserai of Culture is considered as an institution founded by a Japanese citizen and financed by the government of Uzbekistan.

“Stone for Peace of Hiroshima” was built by the Stone for Peace Association of Hiroshima in a central part of Tashkent, in the territory of the International Caravanserai of Culture.

The opening ceremony of the Stone for peace was held on March 29, 2005. The Stone is considered as a symbol of peace and expected to unite different nations in preserving the universal peace. Moreover, the symbol plays a key role in transmitting the same message to future generations.

An eminent Japanese scientist Kato Kudzo devoted a major part of his life to carry out archeological excavations in Dalverzintepa and Fayaztepa, important lands of the Kushan Empire, current Surkhandarya region. The territories are famous as centers of the Buddhist culture for archaeological findings. For his great efforts, Kato Kudzo was venerated as an honored citizen of Termez. With the decree of Islam Karimov, First President of Uzbekistan, Kudzo was awarded the “Dustlik” (“Friendship”) order.

Dalverzintepa is well-known in the Japanese history and scientific society for its Buddhist sculptures.

However, the territory is also interesting in terms of other types of findings. In particular, in 1972, an Uzbek scientist Bakhodir Turgunov discovered one of the biggest treasure troves in Central Asia, weighing 36 kilograms during his excavations in Dalverzintepa. The treasure was found in the form of jewelry. Overall, there are 115 golden objects, including earrings, bracelets, necklaces, with different weights; one of them is about 900 grams.

Mrs. Kyoko Nakayama, while serving as an ambassador of Japan to Uzbekistan in 1999-2002, put great efforts to deepen relations in various realms between our countries. Mrs. Nakayama shared her impressions, opinions and memoirs about Uzbekistan in her book “Sakura of Uzbekistan” that was released in 2006. The book provides readers with valuable information not only on history but also on a modern appearance of Uzbekistan, culture and traditions of the nation.

Imam complex. There are stunningly beautiful Islamic architectural monuments. The Ottoman Koran, the oldest known Koran dating back to the 7 AD, is housed in the library there.

he complex also gives a glimpse of madrasas, medieval educational institutions that remind us of the astonishing scientific and other accomplishments by the great minds that lived in this region.

n the evening, it’s relaxing to walk along the canals under the beautifully shining moon. This is the best nature’s masterpiece to finish your perfect day. I wish there were a nice teahouse with tapchan along the canal where we could sip green tea, and possibly take a nap in peace.
