MESSAGE FROM THE MINISTER
Welcome to Victoria. Summer is here, offering up an exciting events calendar, experiences and attractions in Melbourne and our regions.
It’s the perfect time of year to get outdoors. In the city, catch the Boxing Day Test at the MCG, join in the city’s New Year celebrations and witness three weeks of non-stop action at the Australian Open. In regional Victoria,
head to a campsite in a national park or state forest – free all season.
Get in on the festive spirit with Christmas and celebrate Lunar New Year with dragon dances and other cultural traditions. Summer is a great time of year for kids, with family activities taking over city spaces.
Fans of the arts are well catered for, with the blockbuster Broadway musical Dear Evan Hansen coming to town, and the NGV hosting a retrospective of Yayoi Kusama’s incredible work.
This guide will take you through our events, attractions and tours. Find inspiration in these pages and enjoy every moment of Victoria.

A VIVID SUMMER
BY BRENDAN MCCLEMENTS,
AS THE DAYS GROW LONGER AND THE WEATHER WARMS UP, VICTORIA OFFERS AN ABUNDANCE OF OPTIONS, FROM EXCITING EVENTS TO AMAZING EXPERIENCES.
Summer is one of the best times to get out and about, and discover all Victoria has to offer.
If it’s your first time in Narrm (Melbourne), wominjeka! That’s welcome in the local Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung language.
Victorians love sports – and this summer has some of the year’s biggest sporting fixtures. A key pillar of our events calendar is the iconic Boxing Day Test at the MCG, with Australia to play India this December. Later in the season, the Australian women’s cricket team will look to continue their dominance of the sport during the 2025 Women’s Ashes.
But that’s not all – there’s a two-match international friendly soccer series between the Matildas and Chinese Taipei in Melbourne and Geelong, the 2025 Australian Open tennis, the Yayoi Kusama exhibition at the NGV and the Australian Open golf.
It’s also festival season. Make a beeline for the free fun of the St Kilda Festival and then there’s Victoria’s biggest celebration of queer culture with the Midsumma Festival. Plus, it’s the perfect time of year to explore rooftop bars, or cruise the Yarra River.
Explore even further with a road trip to the popular beaches along the Great Ocean Road and in Gippsland. Discover the history, art and dining scenes in cities like Ballarat and Bendigo, take to the lakes of the Grampians or float down the mighty Murray River.
There are great events in the regions too. There’s the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race, whether participating as a rider or cheering on the elites, as well as Geelong’s Festival of Sails.
Wherever you travel in Victoria this summer, you’re sure to discover the season’s finest.

THE LIGHTER SIDE OF SUMMER
THIS EDITION’S COVER ARTIST, ANDREW FYFE, IS A BORN-ANDBRED MELBURNIAN. HERE, HE GIVES US HIS THOUGHTS ABOUT SUMMER ACROSS THE STATE.
Andrew Fyfe has had a long career in Australian television and even had his own children’s show called Guess What? He’s most commonly known for his live cartooning segments, and remains a well-known figure in the Australian art and entertainment scene. His distinctive satirical style blends comedy and reality.
Andrew continues to explore a range of artistic endeavours. His latest project, a solo exhibition titled Marvellous Melbourne by Fyfe, was held at Sol Gallery in Fitzroy. This exhibition featured a series of prints that depict distinctive Melbourne landmarks. The collection highlights his deep connection to the city, presenting its streets and culture with his signature playful twist.
For the cover of the summer edition of the Official Visitor Guide for Melbourne and Victoria, Andrew illustrated one of his favourite summertime city views.
MELBOURNE AS HOME
Andrew grew up, lived and worked in Melbourne all his life, and this has been significantly formative to who he’s become and the art he makes. “It’s truly a part of me.”
He notes that similarly, the artistic community, with its vibrant laneways and striking sculptures, shapes the city’s identity with Melbourne’s artistic flair on full display. Beyond the creativity, it offers so much more – vast open spaces, tree-lined boulevards, and world-class food. “The city has it all. It has the best coffee in the world, vibrant theatre, exciting sports and beautiful beaches.”
INSPIRATION FROM THE STREETS
It’s the well-known and loved landmarks in Melbourne that fuel Andrew’s creativity. “The cosy, bustling laneways with their European vibes are a constant source of inspiration. I also find deep resonance in places like the Royal Botanic Gardens and the Yarra River.”
Andrew’s work takes familiar scenes and gives them a whimsical twist. “I like to highlight what people might overlook,” he says, bringing an element of humour and character to Melbourne’s everyday moments.
A WEEKEND IN VICTORIA
For a perfect weekend in Victoria for first-time visitors, Andrew suggests that the ideal way to experience both the beauty and culture of the region would be to take a boat ride down the Yarra to soak in the sights from the water, followed by a trip down the Great Ocean Road to see the Twelve Apostles.
“And to top it off, a fantastic dinner at a rooftop restaurant with breathtaking views of the skyline.” + byfyfe.com

READY TO SEE SOME OF THE FIERCEST COMPETITION ON LAND AND SEA? SUMMER IN VICTORIA MEANS GREAT GAMES AND RIVETING RACES.
OCEAN VIEWS, RACING VIBES
It’s been a highlight on the cycling calendar for 10 years, so celebrate one of our most egalitarian events, the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race (1–2 February). While the professionals will be competing in the elite road races, there are two events – the Family Ride and People’s Ride – for part-time pedallers. It’s a big anniversary, too, for the Festival of Sails (25–27 January). This event debuted in Geelong 180 years ago. Now, the regatta has a wide variety of race classes suited to every sailor. Plus, there’s plenty of fun back on land for those who prefer spectating to sailing.

The last time the Australian women’s team met the England women’s team at the MCG was for the final of the 2020 ICC Women’s World Cup. CRICKET SEASON
THE SUMMER OF CRICKET IS HERE AGAIN, AND THIS SEASON WE WILL SEE THE BIGGEST CRICKETING TEAMS IN MELBOURNE.
THE BIG TEST
The eyes of the cricket world will be on the Border-Gavaskar Series as the world’s two top-ranked teams fight for global supremacy in this five-test competition. Pat Cummins will lead the Australian men’s cricket team onto the MCG for the Boxing Day Test (26–30 December) against India, led by Rohit Sharma. This test will see the world’s top two teams competing for ultimate triumph.
GOING FOR GLORY
The last time these two teams played for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy it was 2022/23. The series was played in India, and the home team came out on top, winning the series two games to one. Australia came back strongly, beating India in the final of the 2023 ICC World Test Championship in June last year. Needless to say, there’s a lot of pride at stake.
SEE THE ASHES IGNITE
It’s been 90 years since the Australian and English women’s teams played in their first test series and now those same teams are set to make history at the MCG playing in the Women’s Ashes, the first women’s day-night test match (30 January – 2 February). So, get under the big lights at Australia’s greatest stadium. You need to see it! + cricket.com.au/tickets

THE YARRA RIVER, TRADITIONALLY KNOWN AS BIRRARUNG BY THE WURUNDJERI PEOPLE OF THE KULIN NATION, IS A VICTORIAN TREASURE AND ONE OF MELBOURNE’S NOTICEABLE LANDMARKS.
WINDING TIMELESSWATERS, LANDMARK
HISTORY FLOWS
Traditional owners of the land the river flows through are inextricably connected to Birrarung through spirit, culture and nature. The body of water follows ancestral paths, generously providing for surrounding communities as it has done for thousands of years. Its waters flow from Mount Baw Baw, more than 240 kilometres away, and it meets Melbourne just before flowing into Port Phillip Bay. The land alongside the river, around what is now the MCG, is particularly significant, and remains an important site for First Peoples. Find out more about the river and surrounds by joining the Koorie Heritage Trust’s Birrarung Wilam (River Camp) Walk. Or download Yalinguth, an immersive geolocated audio experience that follows the river, sharing history through stories from a First Peoples perspective.

TOUR BY TRAM
JUMP ABOARD MELBOURNE’S FREE TOURIST TRAM FOR AN INTRODUCTION TO SOME OF THE BEST ATTRACTIONS IN THE CITY.
CIRCLE THE CITY
If you’ve spent any time in Melbourne, you will likely have seen the heritage W-class trams on city streets. This is the free City Circle Tram (route number 35) and it’s a novel way to get around and discover the major attractions. It takes about an hour to complete a loop, but you can hop on and off the tram all day.
Make your way from the neighbourhoods to the city to connect with one of the route 35 trams and start your city circuit. From Fitzroy: All along Nicholson Street, get on a route 96 tram at one of the stops and off at stop 10 at Parliament Station. From Richmond: At stops all along Bridge Road or
Wellington parade, get on a route 75 tram, and disembark at stop 8 on Flinders Street. From South Melbourne: On St Kilda Road catch one of the route 3, 5 or 6 trams and head to stop 5 on Flinders Street.
GATHERING PLACES
One of Melbourne’s favourite
attractions, Fed Square, is easily accessed on the City Circle Tram. Jump off at Swanston St/Flinders St stop 5 if you want to check out the history of the moving image at ACMI, visit The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia, or explore Victoria’s Indigenous history and cultures at the Koorie Heritage Trust. Feel like having a picnic? Grab yourself some lunch, get off the tram at Flagstaff Station/La Trobe St stop 3 at Flagstaff Gardens and spread your blanket beneath the lush Moreton Bay figs.

FUN FOR EVERYONE
Another great aspect of the City Circle Tram is its informative commentary
that lets you know a little about some of the attractions. It’ll tell you, for example, when to get off for SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium (at Melbourne Aquarium/Flinders St stop 2), one of the most popular all-ages attractions in the city limits, with its epic oceanarium. Older kids will get a kick out of the gruesome stories told at Old Melbourne Gaol (a short walk from Exhibition St/La Trobe St stop 8).

CULTURE CORNER
A must-do stop is State Library Victoria (State Library/La Trobe St stop 6), one of the city’s founding institutions. As well as a vast selection of books, it has free exhibitions, including Ned Kelly’s armour. Another of the city’s
architectural gems is the grand old dame of Melbourne theatres, the Princess Theatre (Bourke St/Spring St stop 0), which dates back to 1886 and still hosts the hottest shows in town.
Make this your final stop before hopping off for pre-show nibbles and a drink.

UNCOVERING MELBOURNE’S DIAMONDS
WE SENT SIX PLAYERS FROM THE AUSTRALIAN DIAMONDS NETBALL TEAM ON AN ADVENTURE RACE THROUGH MELBOURNE. HERE’S WHAT HAPPENED.
What happens when you pair up Australian Diamonds Liz Watson and Sophie Garbin (the Power Couple), Jo Weston and Rudi Ellis (the Master and Apprentice) and Amy Parmenter and Kiera Austin (the Smiling Assassins) then send them on a race across Melbourne? They discover some hidden talents as well as check out some of Melbourne’s gems. + diamonds.netball.com.au
FASTER PASTA
Jo: The first clue told us to head to the street synonymous with Melbourne’s Italian community and find a spot named after three comedian brothers. Rudi: Jo and I knew it was Lygon Street, but it took us a moment to find Johnny, Vince & Sam’s Ristorante, named after the Sooshi Mango characters. The test here was to cook a cotoletta with an Italian slaw in 30 minutes.
Amy: You’re not the best cook, but you’re more of a cook than me. Kiera: I’d give us an A for effort! + johnnyvinceandsams.com
CHALLENGE ACCEPTED
Jo: The next challenge was to catch the Number 1 Tram along Swanston Street to Presgrave Place. When we got there, there was an artist from Blender Studios who gave us a lesson with a spray can.
Amy: That was a first for me. Look I’ve put on spray tan before… Kiera:… but never spray paint! + theblenderstudios.com
MIX IT UP
Liz: For our next challenge we had to make our way on foot to Forum Melbourne. We had to mix two tunes together on the decks to get our final clue.
Amy: Wiki wiki wiki! We did that!
Sophie: The final clue was to make our way on foot to where a netball legend has been immortalised in bronze. Liz and I knew that was obviously the statue of legendary former Aussie netball captain Sharelle McMahon near John Cain Arena. + forummelbourne.com.au
GOOD SPORTS
Liz: So, Sophie and I won! What a massive day. We definitely uncovered a few Melbourne diamonds too.
Kiera: It was exciting being immersed in Melbourne, to learn how to spray paint and dabble in DJing – we’ll add that to our resume!
Jo: I loved going inside such an iconic landmark like the Forum, that was really special. Although we weren’t the overall winners, I definitely think we were the winners on the DJ front.

BEYOND THE COCKTAIL
MELBOURNE’S HIDDEN BAR SCENE PROVIDES A MEMORABLE EXPERIENCE, TRANSPORTING GUESTS TO ANOTHER TIME AND PLACE.
Melbourne Indepth: An ongoing RMIT series on Melbourne culture. Written by Dr Jessica Pallant and Dr Jason Pallant. Coordinated by Associate Professor Dr Bernardo Figueiredo (RMIT Marketing)
Ever wandered down a quiet alley and found the perfect cosy bar? Or pushed on a bookshelf in a restaurant and discovered the cocktail den underneath? Hidden bar experiences like these have become a staple of Melbourne’s nightlife, perfectly complementing the laneway coffee culture. So much of Melbourne’s appeal is in these hidden delights, but
it’s not just about the great cocktails they serve. Part of the allure is the way these hidden venues satisfy our yearning for exclusivity, offering a sense of being in the know, if you can find and access them. At the same time, they are a great way to experience the wonder of discovering something new, appealing to our sense of variety and adventure.
It’s not just finding these places or knowing which alleyway to walk down, or book to pull on, these tucked-away venues survive and thrive because of the unique experiences that engage patrons on multiple levels. Melbourne’s hidden bar scene adds an edge to a fun night out.
MASTERY ON SHOW
Hidden bars inspire cocktail enthusiasts and novices alike. At Above Board, expert bartenders are central to the venue and expertly craft drinks while sharing their knowledge with interested patrons. From the history behind a classic cocktail, or a description of the spirit distillation process, to demonstrating the art
of mixology. Either way, you leave having had a great time, and learning something too.
+ aboveboardbar.com
PARALLEL UNIVERSE
The aesthetic flair of Melbourne’s hidden bars is an integral part of their charm. These venues often feature carefully curated interiors that transport you to another time or place. From speakeasy-inspired decor reminiscent of the 1920s at Apollo Inn in Flinders Lane to Jungle Boy’s tiki bar vibes at the back of a sub-shop on Chapel Street. Each bar creates a distinct atmosphere, often different from the larger venue they reside within. The out-of-this-
world experience extends beyond the look and feel of the venue to the flamboyant presentation of drinks and food, and theatrical serving methods. The hunt to find these hidden spots heightens the appeal that’s uniquely Melbourne, building anticipation for what’s to come.

FANTASY
ECLIPSES REALITY
Hidden bars offer a form of escapism from the everyday world. Stepping through Trinket Bar’s hidden wardrobe into the Garnet Den can feel like entering a different realm reminiscent of C.S. Lewis’s epic Narnia
adventures. Once you’re in, the intimate atmosphere creates a fully immersive environment where you can leave your worries behind. This whimsical quality is complemented by carefully curated music and lighting and further enhanced by the exclusivity factor. Seeking out, discovering and then having the lowdown about the hottest secret spots in town, is the ultimate insider flex.
+ trinketbar.com.au
HIDE AND SEEK
Melbourne’s hidden bars offer a subtler form of entertainment, they’re not typically venues for loud music or dancing. Tracking down the bar is half the fun, like a modern-day treasure hunt. Once inside, skilled bartenders put on an entertaining show, crafting elaborate cocktails while engaging with patrons. Tucked beneath the exquisite Gothic architecture of the old Melbourne Stock Exchange you might spot an intriguing flash of crimson carpet, subtly revealing the sleek entrance to Purple Pit. This hidden bar marries elegance with excitement. Minimalist cocktails meet maximalist snacks, all set to a soundtrack of smooth tunes till late at night. It’s a sensory escape with seductive vibes. + purplepit.com.au
These social and experiential factors have kept Melbourne’s hidden bar scene popular among locals and tourists alike. Next time you’re out exploring Melbourne’s vibrant laneways, look twice at the bookshelves you see – you never know what might be behind them. ■

ART OF TRAVEL
YOU’LL SEE THEM WHILE YOU’RE WAITING FOR YOUR NEXT TRAM. THIS SUMMER, THE ARTWORK OF FIVE FIRST PEOPLES ARTISTS FROM VICTORIA IS GRACING POPULAR CITY STOPS.
FULL STOPS
While you’re waiting for a tram along the Collins Street corridor this summer, check out how the shelter is decorated. Five First Peoples artists have been selected to create visual pieces for six of the main stops, with each of the pieces matched for suitability to the land the site is on. The objective is to demonstrate, to Melburnians and visitors, the significance of Indigenous peoples’ artwork and its connection to the stop location. Each has been arranged so that as much of the work is visible as possible.
ART TRAMS
If you’ve visited the city in the past few years, you will likely have seen the Melbourne Art Trams moving along the streets. In 2023 and earlier this year, the featured designs showcased Victorian First Peoples’ artworks. The focus on a public transport corridor this summer is a natural next progression. The shelters at six of the main tram stops on Collins Street will be completely transformed, offering public transport users the opportunity to see the work of local artists without taking any extra time from their days to visit a gallery.
ARTISTIC VISION
The work of Yorta Yorta, Gunditjmara, Gunai, Wurundjeri artist Coree Thorpe will appear at both ends of Collins Street. At Stop 1, near the corner of Spencer Street, is his artwork, titled Protection; at Stop 8, near Spring Street, is the striking Warrior In between is a work by Simone Thomson, who draws inspiration from her ancestral bonds with Birrarung (Yarra River) and Dhungala (Murray River). Ash Firebrace, who contributes a design for Stop 5, is both an artist and educator, providing Aboriginal-
based learning and lessons. Also creating artwork for the tram shelters are Alex Kerr and Samantha Richards. + artshelters.yarratrams.com.au
MEET ALEX KERR
Alex Kerr is a proud Wurundjeri man and the contributing artist to Stop 6 Collins Street. “This artwork is all about Wurundjeri country and our travels we go on within our country based on our season requirements. It represents all peoples on this land coming together and sharing this beautiful country as one. The six meeting places represent the stops along Collins Street and the journey our commuters will now go on while enhancing their cultural knowledge.”

BEYOND THE BOUNDARY
CRICKET SUPERSTAR ELLYSE PERRY GIVES US THE LOWDOWN ON HER FAVOURITE EVENTS AND ATTRACTIONS ACROSS MELBOURNE.
In 2007, at the age of 16, Ellyse Perry debuted in the Australian women’s cricket team. Now one of its senior members, the all-rounder is part of a team rarely beaten. This summer she’ll be an integral cog in the Women’s Ashes Series that includes three oneday internationals, including one at St Kilda’s Junction Oval (14 January), three T20 internationals, and one day-night test match at the MCG (30 January –2 February).
In the lead up to the Ashes, Ellyse shares what she loves about Melbourne and what makes it a great sporting city.
+ instagram.com/ellyseperry
WHAT MAKES MELBOURNE STAND OUT AS A CITY?
I love how Melbourne has such a wonderful blend of culture, arts and sports – things that all Melburnians appreciate in equal measure. Particularly sporting culture, Melbourne is home to amazing stadiums and live sport is really celebrated in the city.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT PLAYING CRICKET HERE?
Commuting to the ground and still being able to grab a coffee from my favourite spots before the start of a day’s play. When I’m not on the field I love being outdoors wandering or skateboarding, or catching up on some work in a coffee shop.
GO-TO RESTAURANTS FOR UNWINDING AFTER A MATCH?
Freddy’s in Windsor is great for pizza and an easy, delicious dinner with friends.
WHAT IS YOUR TOP SUMMER EVENT PICK?
Most definitely the day-night test at the MCG for the Women’s Ashes, as well as the Australian Open and all the surrounding events. Any chance you get, you should see a gig at Forum Melbourne.
WHERE WILL YOU CELEBRATE WITH THE TEAM AFTER THE ASHES?
Hopefully it’s a successful series for us and we can spend some time in the MCG change rooms after the test celebrating a wonderful series. + cricket.com.au/tickets

After that, there’s much more to enjoy. Grab fish and chips at Rotunda then find a shady spot in Williamstown Botanic Gardens for an impromptu picnic. Alternatively, take a seat at Sebastian for a sea view, a cocktail and delicious Basque cuisine.

YOU CAN FIND GREAT COFFEE, FOOD AND MUSIC RIGHT ACROSS MELBOURNE, BUT HIT THESE NEIGHBOURHOODS FOR A SLICE OF THE CITY’S FINEST.
LIVE
MUSIC? LET’S GO!
Ready to see a live band or three? Head to Northcote on the number 86 tram. Last year, High Street was named the coolest street in the world. Check out the many Northcote bars featuring live music, like the Wesley Anne which used to be a church. It’s now a bar, with jazz, blues, Americana and other genres featured in the band room. There are two bigger
venues, Northcote Social Club, where you can catch upcoming local bands and international acts, and Northcote Theatre, for acts like British dance music star Becky Hill (7 January) and US rock band Alien Ant Farm (9 February). + wesleyanne.com.au + northcotesocialclub.com

GREAT COFFEE? LET’S GO!
It’s a crime to choose just one suburb for coffee, but if we must, we’ll send you southeast to Balaclava. Monk Bodhi Dharma is a plant-based cafe and micro-roastery. From within its distressed red brick walls, it’s been serving up breakfast and lunch, as well as coffees with different profiles, since 2009. It’s on Carlisle Street, along with many other cafes, including Batch Espresso, a long-time favourite with the locals. Ready to brew at home? Drop into The Coffee Company, where you can buy freshly roasted beans (as well as nuts) and all the equipment, from stovetop pots to frothers.

FAB FOOD? LET’S GO!
Again, controversial, but if you want to experience diversity, catch the train to Box Hill. This has long been a favourite for those who love Cantonese food, but there’s plenty more. Stylish Vietnamese restaurant Tien Dat has been serving pho, vermicelli salad and other favourites since 1983. At Katori, enjoy premium sushi, sashimi, and robata-grilled meats, with fresh seafood and tempura, all in a sleek, contemporary Japanese dining setting. You don’t even need to venture far from the train, with the food court at Box Hill Central offering Yunnan, Shaanxi and Taiwanese cuisine, Chinese kebabs and heaps more.

DIVE RIGHT IN
COOL
RIGHT DOWN WHEN THE TEMPS GO UP. MAKE THE MOST OF SUMMER AT THESE NEIGHBOURHOOD POOLS, BEACHES, WATERHOLES AND RIVERS.
WILD DIPS
Head out of the city and hike along the challenging 8.5-kilometre Werribee Gorge Circuit Track. Along the way, go for a dip in the river. There are a couple of spots, including Needles Beach and a huge rockpool called Blackwood, the biggest and best place to jump in. Platypuses live in this spot, so watch out for them. You might not think of swimming in the Yarra River, but if you head to Warrandyte, you’ll find a big surprise. Gold miners dug a tunnel through some rock and now the mouth of the tunnel opens to a deep, calm swimming hole called Pound Bend. + parks.vic.gov.au
POOL PARTY
Spread out your towel beneath a tree or on the stepped concrete benches at Fitzroy Swimming Pool, one of the most popular spots in Melbourne on a hot summer day. Weekends tend to be dominated by adults, although the kiddy pool is covered by shade cloth. Looking for a spot the kids will love? Oak Park Pool has a splash pool and waterslides. On the other side of town, the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre (MSAC) has several pools, both inside and out, including an indoor wave pool.

ST KILDA SWIMS
On the hottest days of summer, you’ll spot people splashing in the bay at St Kilda Beach. It’s often quite busy though, so if you’re looking for something quieter, head down the road to Elwood Beach. There’s more of a family vibe at this pretty beach backed by a big stretch of lawn and string of Norfolk pines. If the ocean isn’t for you, try St Kilda Sea Baths. There’s a big indoor pool filled with water pumped directly from the sea, as well as a hydrotherapy spa pool, aromatherapy steam room and lounge area with views of the bay. Get to the foreshore on the SkyBus Peninsula Express, which stops throughout Melbourne’s southeastern suburbs, from St Kilda to Frankston.

WIDE OPEN SPACES
PUT ON A HAT AND SUNSCREEN AND HEAD TO ONE OF MELBOURNE’S GLORIOUS GARDENS, PARKS OR PLAYGROUNDS TO ENJOY SOME TIME IN THE OPEN AIR.
PICNIC PLACES
If you want to relax in natural bushland surroundings, spend the day at Royal Botanic Gardens Cranbourne (book the free shuttle from Cranbourne Train Station). You can join a free guided walk through the Australian Garden or explore on the hop-on, hop-off open-air bus. Look up in the remnant bushland because you might see koalas in the trees. ♦ The gardens at Rippon Lea Estate were started by the first owner Frederick Sargood, who built his home here in 1868. There are large lawns, a fernery and a lake with both a summer house and boat house. There are garden tours on Wednesdays and Thursdays. + rbg.vic.gov.au

WILD PARKS
It’s Melbourne’s largest natural bushland park, so expect to see lots of birds in Yarra Bend Park. Follow the trail that takes you to the spot where grey-headed flying foxes roost during the day. Sit quietly by the river itself and you might spot a platypus. ♦ Royal Park covers 170 hectares in Parkville, with lots of walking trails, sports fields and picnic areas. It’s home to many species of birds, from fairywrens to rosellas. But if you want to look for waterbirds, head to the Trin Warren Tam-boore wetlands, where you might see maned ducks, ibis, swamphens and cormorants.

PERFECT PLAYGROUNDS
If you’re looking for somewhere to let the kids run wild, head to Skinners Adventure Playground in South Melbourne. Open in the afternoons and on weekends, it has cubby houses, slides, swings, a chain traverse, basketball court and even a chicken coop. Plus, there’s plenty of shade, so it’s great for summer. ♦ There are many reasons to love Coburg Lake Reserve. There’s a rocket structure with slides, climbing wall, cubby house and disk roundabout. Plus, the playground is right next to the lake, which is home to ducks and swans. While the kids are playing, find a bench near the water and enjoy the views.

AN ARCHIVE FROM THE WARSAW GHETTO DOCUMENTING THE HOLOCAUST, WAS HIDDEN UNTIL AFTER THE WAR, AND IS NOW ON SHOW IN MELBOURNE.
UNFORGOTTEN HISTORY
POIGNANT MEMENTOS
In 1940, already imprisoned in the Warsaw Ghetto, Jewish historian Emanuel Ringelblum mobilised academics, writers and activists to document what was happening to their people, that they – and others –could use as evidence once the war was over. Over a two-year period, they created a comprehensive archive of more than 35,000 items that chronicled life and death in the ghetto. As the war dragged on with no end in sight, any item that could be salvaged was saved (even lolly wrappers), shedding light on the desperation of those incarcerated in the ghetto to preserve any memento they could.
RETRIEVING THE ARCHIVE
Between August 1942 and April 1943, three caches of documents were buried in metal boxes. Only three members of the group of documenters (called Oneg Shabbat) survived the Holocaust, and only one of those survivors (Hersz Wasser) knew where the boxes were buried. Together, they were able to retrieve two of the boxes from beneath the city’s rubble. Now, some of these precious items
are on display for Underground: The Hidden Archive of the Warsaw Ghetto, a special exhibition at the Melbourne Holocaust Museum.
UNIQUELY MELBOURNE
This is the first time the archive has been seen outside Europe. More than 8,000 Polish-born Holocaust survivors immigrated to Australia after World War II. Most of them settled in Melbourne. In addition to the archive, Underground will also provide visitors with a unique chance to explore what
life was like in Europe’s largest ghetto through the artefacts and testimonies of some of the survivors who call Melbourne home.

This exhibition is presented in partnership with the Jewish Historical Institute, Poland and the Munich Documentation Center for the History of National Socialism.
The Trial Introductory Flight is an unforgettable experience in the skies that will see you soar down Melbourne’s coastline, where you will control the aircraft under the guidance of a professional instructor.

BEATS AND EATS
MAKE THE MOST OF A BIG WEEKEND OF LIVE MUSIC IN ONE OF MELBOURNE’S FAVOURITE NEIGHBOURHOODS AND EXPLORE ALL IT HAS TO OFFER.
SEASIDE FESTIVITIES
It’s Australia’s longest-running free music festival, and this year is its 44th iteration. On Saturday at St Kilda Festival (15–16 February), enjoy a showcase of established and emerging Indigenous artists, as
well as community events, at the First Peoples First showcase. The multistage spectacular continues on Big Festival Sunday, with bands, carnival rides, activities and market stalls selling food and drink. Over the weekend, there’s the chance to see more than 70 musical acts.
CAKES AND COCKTAILS
Join the crowds strolling along Acland Street, which is lined with cafes, bars and stores. In fact, you could spend all day here exploring if you didn’t have to get back to the live music. Need a sweet snack to keep the blood-sugar levels up? Since 1934, Monarch Cakes has been baking Eastern European specialties, like cheesecake, chocolate kooglhoupf and plum cake. If you’re after something more substantial, Chinta Ria Soul serves up Malaysian classics, such as curry laksa and satay chicken. Once the sun goes down, head to Cicciolina for modern Italian cuisine and cocktails.
BARS AND BITES
Fitzroy Street runs away from the beach, but there’s still plenty to see and do. You won’t be the only one who thinks of it, but a beer at the Prince Public Bar is an essential part of any visit to this part of town. There are lots of places where you can duck in and enjoy a quick bite, but if you’re in the mood for a glass of wine or cocktail, head to Chronicles Bar. It’s muchloved by the locals and highlights independent Victorian breweries and wine. Later in the evening, Freddie Wimpole’s serves craft beers in a venue modelled on a dive bar.

MAGIC BEACH MAKING WAVES
A NEW MOVIE IS BRINGING ONE OF ALISON LESTER’S MUCH-LOVED CHILDREN’S BOOKS TO LIFE. HERE, SHE TELLS US ABOUT THE BEACH CLOSE TO HER HOMETOWN THAT SPARKED THE MAGIC.
Thirty years ago, Alison Lester’s picture book Magic Beach was published. Since then, it’s never been out of print. Now, its story has been adapted into a film that blends live action with animation. Alison grew up on a farm near Fish Creek in Gippsland, close to the beach that inspired the book. She tells us about the film, releasing in cinemas on 16 January, and the best of Gippsland’s coastline.
IS MAGIC BEACH BASED ON A VICTORIAN BEACH?
Magic Beach is a mixture of many beaches but Walkerville is the heart of it. I’ve been spending summers there since I was a baby. My original story centered on a small girl and the Mermaid’s Cave and it evolved from there.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WRITING AND ILLUSTRATING BOOKS?
All my adult life. I was an art teacher then an illustrator before I took up writing. I’ve averaged a book a year for the last 45 years.
WHAT WOULD YOU SUGGEST FAMILIES DO IN FISH CREEK OVER SUMMER?
All the beaches of Waratah Bay are beautiful, even when the weather is wild. Fish Creek has fabulous art galleries and gift shops, including my little gallery – the Alison Lester Gallery and Bookshop. The art deco Fish Creek Hotel is a great spot for lunch and the Great Southern Rail Trail is perfect for walking and riding.
ANY HIDDEN GEMS IN THE REGION?
It’s not really a secret, but Wilsons Promontory is a beautiful national park. There are places you can camp, incredible walks and gorgeous beaches. Bring the goggles and snorkels because there are a couple of spots like Norman Beach and Picnic Bay, where you can see amazing fish and sponge gardens.
Just inland from the coast is Agnes Falls, the highest single-span waterfall in Victoria. There’s a short walk through the bush from the car park, where you can spot pretty birds like honeyeaters and fantails. + magicbeachmovie.com + visitsouthgippsland.com.au + alisonlester.com

This transformed flour mill is still Echuca’s tallest building and now houses a contemporary bar and restaurant. + echucapaddlesteamers.net.au + portofechuca.org.au

SUMMER BY THE SEA
IT’S ALL HAPPENING IN GEELONG AND THE BELLARINE DURING THE HOTTEST SEASON. SPEND A FEW DAYS BY THE BEACH AND CHECK OUT SUMMER’S EVENTS.
THE BELLARINE EXPERIENCE
It’s a spot with the perfect combination of beachside bliss and rolling hills and vineyards. Families can experience the best of the Bellarine on the Polar Express at Bellarine Railway (throughout December). Jump aboard the heritage train and relive favourite moments from the story. Another fun event close by is the Portarlington Mussel Festival (11 January). This is a celebration of the mussels farmed in the bay and enjoyed right across the country. There’ll be 120 food and drink stands, market stalls, great local musicians and, of course, plenty of mussels to slurp down. If you can’t get enough, spend the day on the bay with Portarlington Mussel Tours, where you’ll head out on a lovingly restored Huon pine vessel to see how they’re farmed, cooked and eaten.
GEELONG’S FESTIVAL VIBES
Johnstone Park becomes a magnet for lager lovers during the Geelong Beer Festival (18 January). It brings together the region’s best food, drink, arts and entertainment. There’ll be world-class breweries, cideries, distilleries, cocktail specialists, vineyards and local gourmet street food, complemented by a program of live entertainment and activities. Alternatively for a festival celebrating culture, check out the Pako Festa (22 February), Victoria’s premier free multicultural festival. There’ll be a street parade featuring local community groups, folk dancing, cultural food, workshops and entertainment on five stages.
SETTLE IN
Check out the accommodation options if you want to stay and explore more of Geelong and The Bellarine Novotel Geelong has family-friendly rooms on the waterfront with an impressive buffet breakfast in Tempo Kitchen & Bar downstairs. On the Bellarine, Portarlington Grand Hotel has elegant boutique rooms above the pub and dining room. More family friendly is BIG4 Ingenia Holidays Queenscliff Beacon, which has villas, apartments and cabins, as well as caravan and camping sites.

VICTORIA’S REGIONS SUPPLY PRODUCE TO OUR STORES ALL THROUGH THE YEAR, BUT YOU CAN GET MUCH CLOSER TO THE PROVENANCE AT THESE DESTINATIONS.
BERRY DELICIOUS
Nothing tastes better than juicy fruit straight from the tree. Near Beechworth and Stanley in Victoria’s High Country, you can collect your own berries at Beechworth Berries and High Grove Berry and Cherry Farm. What is ripe is dictated by the stage of the season, but you might get raspberries, tayberries, blueberries, blackberries, boysenberries or cherries. CherryHill Orchards in the Yarra Valley draws crowds to pick fruit from the trees until about midJanuary. On the Bellarine Peninsula, Tuckerberry Hill Berry Farm allows visitors to pick strawberries and blueberries in season.

SAVOUR THE SEASON
PADDOCK TO PLATE
Join chef Liam Downes and his dogs to hunt for the most aromatic of fungus. At Black Cat Truffles near Ballarat, once you’ve dug up a few specimens, you’ll sit at the shaded cafe patio for a six-course meal featuring summer truffles. In Birregurra, a meal at Dan Hunter’s Brae is an experience, with much of what hits the table coming from the kitchen garden and orchard. During summer that includes zucchini flowers, beetroot, berries and all sorts of baby leaves and herbs.

POND TO PAN
If you’ve ever wanted to haul in a trout and have someone else cook it to perfection, head to Tuki. Even if you don’t fancy baiting a hook, the restaurant here creates delicious meals from its own lamb and other local suppliers. You can even stay in cottages here to immerse yourself in the landscape of the Macedon region.
On the Great Ocean Road, stop at Apollo Bay Fisherman’s Co-op where rock lobster, scallops, snapper, calamari and other varieties of seafood come straight from the Bass Strait (Yep, it’s a very big pond). You can buy it fresh or have the kitchen prepare it to order.
