Melbourne Cup Carnival

MELBOURNEʼS Spring Fling The weather’s heating up and so are excitement levels as epic events and fascinating festivals fill the calendar. And They’re Racing

The thundering of hooves on turf, glamorous fashion and a party atmosphere can mean only one thing: the Melbourne Cup Carnival (2–9 November) has arrived. Flemington Racecourse hosts four huge days of thoroughbred racing, beginning with AAMI Victoria Derby Day (2 November) before the race that stops a nation on Lexus Melbourne Cup Day (5 November). Get ready for racing at the Melbourne Cup Parade on Swanston Street (4 November), then prep for the big day. There are plenty of options: a party in the Flemington car park, being one of thousands of fans trackside, watching celebs at the Birdcage, or attending a lunch in the city. When the winner has been celebrated, there are still more race days to enjoy: Kennedy Oaks Day (7 November) and Seppelt Wines Stakes Day (9 November). w flemington.com.au/melbournecupcarnival

8

The Carnival Begins

Before the focus shifts to Flemington, feel the thrill of Moonee Valley’s Cox Plate Carnival (25–26 October). It begins with the Ladbrokes Manikato Stakes, Australia’s richest race run under lights in the evening. The next day, it’s the anticipated Ladbrokes Cox Plate. w thevalley.com.au/cox-platecarnival

Caulfield Class

One of the most important lead-up events to the Melbourne Cup is the Stella Artois Caulfield Cup (19 October). It’s the world’s richest turf handicap over 2,400 metres and attracts the best from around the globe. There’s plenty happening off the track, too. The Style Stakes, delicious dishes, the finest drinks and marquee action are a huge part of the day. w mrc.racing.com/calendar

Pre- and Post-match Drinks Before or after the big event, head to a cosy pub, rooftop bar or waterside drinking hole.

The Finals Countdown

For five months, 18 teams from across the nation have vied for supremacy in the AFL homeand-away season. Now, it’s the business end of the year, with the best eight teams polishing their skills while their fans dream of glory. The 2019 Toyota AFL Finals Series (5-21 September) takes place at arenas in most states, but the MCG and Marvel Stadium in Melbourne and GMHBA Stadium in Geelong are where you can catch the action in Victoria. w afl.com.au/finals

01 Good Heavens Footy’s Big Dance

These two teams have slugged it out since March, beating all others to get to the 2019 Toyota AFL Grand Final (28 September). The MCG will be packed with supporters, and millions more will watch it on television. The day before, join the Grand Final Parade (27 September), when fans line Spring Street and Wellington Parade to cheer on the players. You’re unlikely to score a ticket to the game, but join the fun watching the action on Federation Square’s big screen. w afl.com.au/finals

The Style Files

Ready to update your look? This is the city’s biggest fashion event and one that introduces the latest looks for the coming season. Melbourne Fashion Week (until 5 September) features a jam-packed program of runway shows at Melbourne Town Hall, street runways, creative workshops, stunning exhibitions and fashion seminars. The country’s leading designers will be there, presenting their new season collections. But this is also where you’ll discover the brightest upand-comers, ready to take the fashion world by storm. If you want to be ahead in the style stakes there is no other place to be this spring. w mfw.melbourne.vic.gov.au

Finishing Touches

As spring racing looms on the calendar, there is one creative profession that experiences a boom. A hat is a must-have trackside, so milliners are busy blocking felt, stitching flowers and fitting them to customers’ heads. Louise Macdonald Millinery has been topping the outfits of Melbourne’s most fashionable for 30 years. Either have your dream creation made for you or choose from the ready-to-wear line. Need more styles to check out? The work of Phillip Rhodes is so good it’s made the NGV’s permanent collection, and Marea Bright once worked with the Queen’s personal milliner. w millinery.com.au w philliprhodes.com.au w mareabright.com.au

Love the Laneways

Explore Melbourne’s tiny streets and alleyways to find art, fashion, food and more.

Tattersalls Lane

This place comes alive after dark. Hidden in the middle of Chinatown, it’s home to Section 8, a graffiti-covered bar created from pallets and shipping containers and populated by hipsters who love the late-night DJs. Looming above it is loft-style Ferdydurke, with its classic cocktails, hotdog menu and banging tunes. w section8.com.au w ferdydurke.com.au

Tattersalls Lane

Meyers Place

This is one of Melbourne’s oldest laneways and is the home of a few fantastic hidden spots. Duck into Lane’s Edge, with its excellent plant-filled courtyard that’s open until late. Order spritzes, Birra Moretti and cicchetti (Venetian tapas) at the Italian bar/eatery, Bar Carlo, or head upstairs for pasta like nonna makes at the local institution, The Waiters Restaurant. If you need something more substantial, Pizza Pizza Pizza dishes up New York-style slices. See that black curtain at the back of the store? Duck through that to find a secret bar serving classic cocktails. w lanesedge.com w barcarlo.com.au a The Waiter’s Restaurant, 20 Meyers Place w pizzapizzapizza.com.au

This tiny laneway is one of the few in the city that doesn’t run in a straight line. Try Sezar for modern Armenian cooking, which draws on many of the spices and techniques from neighbours like Turkey.

The street is also home to The Kelvin Club. It’s usually reserved for members, but there are many clubs from around the world with reciprocal rights — just check the website. w sezar.com.au w kelvinclub.com

Connecting Bourke Street with Little Bourke Street at the top end of town, Crossley Place was once known as Romeo Lane and had a reputation as a location for debauchery back in the day. These days, it’s home to Pellegrini’s, where the coffee is as strong as the locals love for this long-running late-night Italian espresso bar. Drop into the pint-sized Lucy Folk boutique to pick up some of her quirky, playful jewellery before hitting up Gingerboy to feast on Asian fusion hawker-style dishes.

It curves its way from Flinders Lane and back to ACDC Lane, packing in an eyeful of street art on its walls. When you’ve checked out the talent, there are a few high-end dining spots to get the tastebuds twitching. Housed in an old brick warehouse, Lee Ho Fook delivers modern, creative Chinese cuisine to a salivating hip clientele. Or you can take a seat at Tonka, where modern interpretations of Indian dishes are served beneath a cloud-like art installation.

Welcome to Melbourne

“Whenever I spend the weekend in Melbourne, I love stopping by Bar Americano before I go out for dinner. It’s standing room only and there’s always a queue but I don’t mind waiting for the superb cocktails. It’s hidden away in a lane near an arcade and has a classic old-world charm about it.”

Melbourne Fringe Festival Simon Abrahams Creative Director and CEO at Melbourne Fringe Festival Coming up to his fifth year working for Melbourne Fringe, Simon Abrahams is gearing up for the festival with a new home for the Fringe Hub and plenty of exciting festival highlights. Even before taking on the role of Creative Director and CEO of the Melbourne Fringe Festival (12–29 September), Simon Abrahams had cemented himself as a key player in Melbourne’s art scene. “I’m feeling more and more energised and challenged by the role every year,” he says. It’s been the perfect culmination of all of my previous roles and skills rolled into one – capacity for a big creative vision, collaboration with some of our city’s most interesting artists and need for long-term strategy. It’s a dream gig.” Known for its unique arts offering and alternative spirit, Simon notes that his vision for the festival is “to amplify voices from the

20

margins through cultural democracy – that is, enabling any citizen of Melbourne to make a cultural contribution to the life of their city. Democratising the arts through enabling big ideas and lowering barriers to entry has been my great passion. We’ve focused on programs for children, First Nations, deaf and disabled peoples and enabling freedom of artistic expression for anyone who has something to say.” The Melbourne Fringe Festival takes place across the city, from hidden laneway spots and major arts venues to the Fringe’s new Hub at Trades Hall. “We’ve set up 11 different venues at Trades Hall (and an amazing late-night club) where the Fringe will really take flight with creative projects across every possible art form lighting up our city.”

City Wine Shop is informal but delicious – just the way I like it. It’s all about the schnitzel.

View

Looking up at Trades Hall, the Fringe’s new home or looking out from the balcony onto Melbourne is my new favourite view of our city.

Shop

Readings isn’t considered one of the best bookshops in the world for nothing. It’s got knowledgeable staff, great stock and gives back to our culture. It’s a dream.

Bar

House of Correction and Goldilocks is so perfectly Melbourne. A lift above a noodle shop leads you to a quiet and grungy bar, which then leads up to a gorgeous rooftop bar. It’s everything.

Place

The Butterfly Club is a cabaret venue and bar hidden down an alley. It always has interesting independent artists and you can get a brilliant cocktail, too. w melbournefringe.com.au

More than merely a place to see a show, this buzzing cultural precinct is a remarkable tourist attraction in its own right that can be explored and enjoyed in a variety of ways.

Tucked down Meyers Place, Pizza Pizza Pizza offers up pizza by the slice and has a hidden bar out back. Stretchy ice-cream is a thing — in fact, it’s the main attraction at Cuppa Turca. The Music Vault

Bruce Milne Melbourne Music Bus Tours host Bruce Milne has spent his life immersed in Melbourne’s music scene with an impressive roll call of experiences and accomplishments. He worked at Missing Link record label, started the Au-go-go label, editing Pulp fanzine, ran The Tote Hotel and is currently the co-owner of local institution, Greville Records, as well as being a regular RRR radio announcer. Over the decades Bruce has amassed a wealth of Melbourne music knowledge, anecdotes and stories, and there’s no one better qualified to host the Melbourne Music Bus Tours. Jump on board for a trip through the city’s rich music history. Tours depart from the Arts Centre Melbourne and each ride features a special music guest.

Above Board takes cocktail making to a new level. There are only 12 seats around an elegant bar and no alcohol on display. Let the bartender be your guide and expect to be impressed by the cocktail you’ll be served.

Restaurant

Recently, when a friend suggested a long drive to Glen Waverley for a Sri Lankan meal at Elephant Corridor, I thought he was crazy. However, it was a worthwhile drive. I ate a meal that was unlike anything I have eaten before. The rich spices used made each dish unique.

Music Venue

The Old Bar has bands playing every night of the week. It has three areas – a front bar, a band room and a back outdoor area. It’s open late and is a popular hangout for Melbourne’s musicians and music community. It’s a great place to see up-and-coming acts or established artists in an intimate setting.

Place

The Music Vault at Arts Centre Melbourne is a small, but constantly changing, celebration of Australian music. Inside the space are costumes, instruments, posters and memorabilia from some of our best loved and biggest artists.
