Message from the Minister There is no place like Melbourne in summer. From major sporting events and festivals to the best in arts and culture, our great city has something for everyone. The summer of sport kicks off with the Presidents Cup golf at Royal Melbourne in December, followed by the Boxing Day Test at the MCG then hundreds of the world’s best tennis players will descend on Melbourne Park in January for the Australian Open. The Australian women’s cricket team takes on the world during the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in February, including the final at the famous ‘G. Melbourne also celebrates its diversity with Midsumma and Chinese New Year, with the popular St Kilda Festival capping off the season. I hope everyone enjoys the best our city has to offer this summer. Hon. Martin Pakula MP Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events

Message from the Lord Mayor Soak up all summer has to offer with our city’s lively calendar of events. As the festive season approaches, Melbourne transforms into a magical place. Carols by Candlelight, festive markets and events, and even a visit from Santa will provide Christmas cheer for all. Melbourne is Australia’s sporting capital and there is plenty to look forward to with the Boxing Day Test and the Australian Open. Also in summer, the National Sustainable Living Festival welcomes innovators, leaders and entrepreneurs to focus on the future of our climate. You’ll find more events on the What’s On Melbourne website. We love to see you enjoying our city; share your experiences by tagging #melbmoment on social media. Sally Capp Lord Mayor

Welcome to

Melbourne

There’s no doubt about it: Melbourne in summer is the place to be. Delight in the city’s warm embrace in some of its beautiful outdoor spaces. From the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne to beachside walking trails, there’s plenty to explore. This is also a great time of the year to take a cruise on the Yarra to see the city’s green side.

Summer is also when the sporting calendar is crowded with events. For spectators it’s a question of whether tennis, cricket or golf (or all three) is going to be part of your agenda. The Australian Open serves up the world’s finest players in the first Grand Slam championship of the year. The Boxing Day Test Match is always a big deal, and it’s followed this season by the Women’s T20 World Cup. Tiger Woods and Ernie Els are the two non-playing captains this year leading the teams for the Presidents Cup being played at Royal Melbourne Golf Club. When it comes to arts and culture Melbourne has something for everyone. Fans of grand musical

theatre and blockbuster exhibitions will find plenty to please, but it’s also possible to get a fix of design, theatre, comedy and live music. Got a passion for fashion? Looking for the perfect local gift for people back home? The city’s shopping precincts offer choices for all tastes and budgets, whether you’re into unique fashion or the work of local artisans. No visit to Melbourne is complete without a thorough investigation of the renowned dining and drinking scenes. Have an alfresco breakfast, dumplings for lunch, dinner with a celebrity chef then well-shaken cocktails to cap off a great night.

Acknowledgement of Country

In welcoming visitors to Melbourne, we acknowledge the Traditional Owners of Country, the Boon Wurrung and Woi Wurrung (Wurundjeri) peoples of the Kulin Nation. We pay respect to them, their cultures and their Elders past, present and future.

Australian Open

SUMMER In The City

It’s getting hot here! These are the epic events filling the calendar and helping Melbourne set the scene as we welcome a new decade. Game, Set, Match

Melbourne Park — in fact, the entire city — comes alive when the first tennis Grand Slam of the year rolls into town. The Australian Open (20 January– 2 February) sees the world’s best tennis players and its greatest fans bring the noise to Rod Laver Arena and beyond. Grab a ticket — ground passes and seated arena tickets are available — to see what’s happening on the court. Otherwise check out the music at the AO Live Stage, grab lunch at one of the many food trucks or take the kids to meet their favourite players in the fan zone. Why not walk from the city to the grounds? On the way, you can drop by the AO Festival and grab a bite to eat from pop-up restaurants by the city’s hottest chefs. w ausopen.com

8

Off The Bat

Cricket takes centre stage during summer. One of the most anticipated sporting events of the year is the Men’s Domain Test Series Boxing Day Test (26– 30 December). This year, New Zealand will send their best team to take on the Aussies at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Australia hosts one of the year’s biggest tournaments, when the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup begins in February. The Australian team is the defending champion and will test its mettle against seven other nations, including England, India and South Africa. In Melbourne, join the action at St Kilda’s Junction Oval for the pool matches. The final will be held at the MCG on 8 March. w cricket.com.au

Meet Your Match After a big day at the tennis or cricket, these spots will sort you out for dinner and drinks.

On The Green

The rest of the world gets set to take on the USA when the Presidents Cup (9–15 December) tees off at Royal Melbourne Golf Club. The US team has dominated this competition, which is held every second year, but Royal Melbourne has been the happiest hunting ground for the internationals — it hosted their only win in 1998. Tiger Woods and Ernie Els will helm the teams as non-playing captains, while Australian golfers Adam Scott, Marc Leishman and Cameron Smith have all made the initial cut for the international team.

On Your Bike

Elite cyclists, along with families and everyday riders, take over Victoria’s best-known stretch of road for the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race (30 January–2 February). This excellent weekend of action — in Geelong, Barwon Heads, Torquay and surrounds — combines scenic rides with fast-paced racing. w cadelevansgreatocean roadrace.com.au

The Boy Wizard

It’s been thrilling Melbourne audiences for months, but there’s still time to see Harry Potter and the Cursed Child at Princess Theatre. This is the eighth story in the blockbuster series. Young Harry is now a grown-up. He’s married, has a son who is about to start at Hogwarts, and is an overworked employee of the Ministry of Magic. Then… Well, you’ll have to go along to find out. Both audiences and critics agree, this production — it runs for more than five hours and can be seen in two instalments over a single day or on consecutive nights — is magical. w harrypottertheplay.com/au Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Matthew-Murphy

Artistic Visionaries

During their short but prolific careers Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat carved a place in history. Combining distinctive imagery and political commentary, they changed the art world during the 1980s. More than 300 artworks, including works created in public spaces,

sculptures, photographs and more, are travelling halfway around the world for Keith Haring | Jean-Michel Basquiat: Crossing Lines (from 1 December) at NGV International. The exhibition examines the impact of their work and how it influences the world today.

My Melbourne

Daria Gavrilova

She’s one of Australia’s tennis sweethearts, and she’ll be in action during January when the Australian Open begins. Even before she moved here in 2013, Daria Gavrilova’s heart belonged, in many ways, to Australia. She met her fiancé, Australian pro tennis player Luke Saville, while they were playing junior tennis, and the pair now live in Melbourne’s bayside suburbs. Known by all as Dasha, the 25-year-old won over local fans quickly with her fantastic skills and infectious sense of fun. And although she grew up in Russia and her family are still there, she’s become a true Melburnian: “When I’m overseas and friends ask, ‘Dash, where are you going next?’ I’ll tell them I’m going home. Everyone gets confused because they don’t know if I mean Moscow or Melbourne, but this is definitely my home now.” After growing up in one of the world’s biggest cities, the slower pace of Melbourne really suits her lifestyle. “Moscow is always too busy,” she explains. “I love that in Melbourne you can live in the suburbs and you don’t need to leave them if you don’t want to.” Now that she’s settled into life in Melbourne, there’s one time of year Daria always looks forward

20

to: the summer. Not only does she get to spend more time at the beach, but it’s when the world’s best tennis players arrive in town. “I train at Melbourne Park so when there’s nothing on it’s just my training base,” she explains. “But as soon as the summer comes around there’s a completely different vibe around there because lots of the international players begin training there too. But even around the city, all the banners are up and everyone starts to talk about the tennis. “It’s pretty cool, and it’s also the only time of year that I really get recognised,” she adds with a laugh. She’s also rather chuffed with the way the Australian public has embraced her as one of its own. “I feel everyone’s support,” she says of playing in the Australian Open. “It feels as though everyone wants me to win as much as I do. I don’t really feel too much pressure, because I feel as though as long as I do my best everyone will support me.” Connect with Daria at: f /dariagav @daria_gav

Daria’s Favourites Cafe

Usually I make my own breakfast, but around the time the Australian Open is on if I’m going to catch up with someone I’ll choose Cheeky Monkey in Richmond.

Restaurant

I really like Miss Chu. It’s a fairly casual, Vietnamese place in South Yarra and South Melbourne. It’s my go-to if I’m in the middle of doing something but need to have a quick dinner.

Bar

Luke loves steak, so we often go to Railway Club Hotel in Port Melbourne, which is more of a pub than a bar.

View The sunset at St Kilda. It’s very pretty and so different to anything you experience in Moscow.

Treat

There’s a place in Albert Park called Jock’s Ice Cream. I always have the honeycomb flavour. When I’m training I can afford a few extra calories so I go there every week or two.

More than merely a place to see a show, this buzzing cultural precinct is a remarkable tourist attraction in its own right that can be explored and enjoyed in a variety of ways.

The seventh book in Andy Griffiths and Terry Denton’s wacky series comes to the stage. When The 91-Storey Treehouse (4–19 January) hits Arts Centre Melbourne’s Playhouse Theatre we’ll find out whether the Big Red Button can really destroy the world. If you’ve got children younger than 12, ArtPlay is the place for them to express their creativity. Little ones, from babies to five-year-olds, will get a thrill as they dig, play, explore and party in Melbourne Museum’s Pauline Gandel Children’s Gallery.

It is a monument to Australian lives sacrificed during war, but the Shrine of Remembrance is also an impressive and engaging piece of architecture. Visitors can view the exhibition, The Korean War 1950–53 (until 22 March), which explains the origins of the conflict and why Australia became involved. Explore another era at the Polly Woodside, an 1885 tall ship that travelled more than 1.7 million kilometres carrying coal and wheat before finding a permanent home at South Wharf.

What makes Melbourne’s dining scene so interesting is its multicultural make-up. Japanese food is so popular, and Izakaya Den, in a hip basement space, offers lots of great small dishes to share. Alinta Chidzey Actor, Chicago the Musical

Honestly, Chin Chin is the best Thai-fusion restaurant in Melbourne. Get the ‘feed me’ option because you’ll walk away feeling the most satisfied you’ve ever been. Every dish is incredible.

Bar Australians would recognise her face. Melbourne born and based Alinta Chidzey has been a fixture of stage and screen since she took her first role in Mamma Mia! at age 18. Since then she’s appeared in Cats and West Side Story, and had parts in TV shows including Winners & Losers, Neighbours and Wentworth. Next, she’s playing Velma Kelly, the famous vaudeville star who killed her sister and husband, in Chicago the Musical (14 December – 9 February) at Arts Centre Melbourne. It’s a role she relishes. “She’s interesting to play because she’s the type of person who won’t let anything affect her, even

76

with several knockbacks,” says Alinta of Velma. “I guess I’m like that, too. You have to be thickskinned to survive in this industry.” It helps to be appearing in her hometown. “I love performing in Melbourne, especially during the summer,” she says. “The city has always been home for me and is such a great mecca for the arts, culture and is a great culinary melting pot.” Stay in touch with Chicago the Musical: w chicagothemusical.com.au f /chicagoinau i @chicagoinau

My local is The Local Taphouse. It has great beers and food, and if you’re looking for a place to unwind with friends over a beer this is it.

View

I run along the beach in Elwood and one of the best views of the city is at Green Point.

Hidden Gem

There is an amazing bar called The Everleigh on Gertrude Street. It’s definitely a gem and has the best cocktails.

Too much of the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) radiation can cause painful sunburn. Australia has some of the highest UV levels in the world, so it is important to apply sunscreen and wear protective clothing such as a shirt, hat and sunglasses if you’re spending time outdoors. Visit the SunSmart Victoria website to check the daily UV index and alerts.

Smoking Laws

Victoria has strict laws on where people are permitted to smoke tobacco as well as e-cigarettes and personal vaporisers. Smoking is not allowed in or around non-enclosed drinking and eating venues, outdoor areas where food is served (alfresco dining), train stations and platforms, public transport, cars carrying passengers under the age of 18 years, shopping centres, and enclosed spaces that are workplaces (to protect the health of employees, customers and public). Bourke Street Mall, QV Melbourne and The Tan running track have also been declared smoke-free precincts. Visit the website below for full details of smoke-free locations and smoking laws in Melbourne. w melbourne.vic.gov.au

Accessible Melbourne

Improving accessibility to Melbourne’s public transport, visitor attractions, events, venues and amenities for people with special mobility needs is a major priority of the Victorian Government and City Council. Maps and Resources

The City of Melbourne offers downloadable Mobility Maps on its website covering the different city precincts. Lonely Planet also offers a free Accessible Melbourne e-book packed with tips and recommendations for travellers with special needs.
