Melbourne is always a great music city, but during summer it gets even better with gigs, including the incredible ALWAYS LIVE program, taking place across the state.
If it’s your first time in Narrm (Melbourne), wominjeka! That’s welcome in the local Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung language. Get involved in some of Melburnians’ favourite pastimes. Pakistan's cricket team is touring, and they’ll take part in one of the year’s biggest sporting fixtures, the Boxing Day Test. If you prefer music to sport, we’ve also got you covered. Melbourne is a great music city, all year round, but during summer it gets even better with gigs, including the incredible ALWAYS LIVE program, taking place across the state.
You can get away from the crowds, too. Take a cruise or kayak down the Yarra River, explore a neighbourhood shopping precinct, or take to one of the city’s rooftop bars to enjoy a seasonal cocktail. There’s also a host of experiences available that will introduce you to the 65,000 years of Indigenous culture and history of the region. Outside of the city's bright lights, regional Victoria epitomises the best of the season. At this time of year, our beaches along the Great Ocean Road are always popular, but you might want to explore even further. Discover the history, art and dining scenes in cities like Ballarat and Bendigo, take to the lakes of the Grampians or cruise down the mighty Murray River. Wherever you travel in Victoria this summer, you’re sure to discover the season’s finest. Brendan McClements

Welcome to Victoria Welcome to Victoria
The days are longer and temperatures are rising. Summertime in Melbourne and Victoria has plenty to offer, from amazing attractions to enticing events.
Summer is one of our favourite times of year. Not just because the weather is incredible – the days are normally hot and clear – but because there’s that feeling you get when the kids are on school holidays and the cricket is on the TV. It’s one of the best times of year to get out and about and discover all Victoria has to offer.

summer sporting calendar, the Australian Open (14–28 January). “But I’ve tried to reflect all the things that we see in summertime in Melbourne in the layers of the hand,” says the artist. “If you look closely, you’ll see lots of things you might recognise.”
Finding Inspiration Paink lives with his wife and son in North Balwyn, close to where he grew up. When it comes to inspiration, exercise is important. Each day, he goes to the gym or runs with his staffie, Koh, around the neighbourhood.
School Daze It started with an art class when he realised school wasn’t his strong suit. But it really kicked off when a group of friends working in Melbourne’s hospitality industry encouraged then-graphic designer Paink to paint a mural. “I did more murals – one for the Australian Open, too – and shared the work I was doing on my social media,” he says. “That was 10 years
ago, and momentum kept building. About two years ago I started shifting more towards the art and painting side, which I really love.” Now, his style incorporates elements of street art and portraiture, often including musicians, movie stars or pop culture icons as subjects.
Got it Covered The cover image relates to one of the biggest events on Melbourne’s
“I get inspired when I draw by listening to music,” says Paink. “All genres, depending on the vibes I’m trying to get for the types of things I’m painting, but mostly hip-hop and rap. “My son’s three, and I love seeing how he responds to painting and paint. He’s so free and interested and spontaneous – that’s inspiring for me, too.” Paink’s works were recently exhibited at Compendium Gallery in Armadale, and are still available for purchase. + painkartist.com

There’s ice cream and music, the MCG and Luna Park, penguins and seagulls. Plus, there’s street art, the artistic form where Paink’s career started and the one for which Melbourne is best known. “It’s kind of an organised chaos,” he says.

More to Do As well as a celebration of hardfought, fun tennis action, there’s plenty more excitement on offer that's bound to appeal to all. In an AO first, you’ll be able to sit down for a Lebanese-inspired brunch at Bar Atrium or enjoy Persian bites on Grand Slam Oval from SalamaTea, a social enterprise supporting refugees and those seeking asylum in Australia. Garden Square will be home to a delicious Mediterranean deli concept, while the Western Courts will host young talent like Frankie Cox from Green-On serving up fresh, healthy salads and Charlie Carrington
of Little Havana delivering tasty Cuban sandwiches. At the premium end of dining experiences, Penfolds, Rockpool and Stokehouse will be returning, along with Fusion Feast, a pan-Asian hawker-style offering. Tickets are on sale now. + ausopen.com

BBC Earth Experience

Travel the natural world without leaving Melbourne. The latest 360-degree immersive experience takes you on an epic journey across the seven continents. Larger than Life
Now, you can walk among these landscapes while visiting the BBC Earth Experience at Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre. The seven continents are represented in the main gallery space, and
you’ll step onto polar ice caps, walk through ancient rainforests and meet mesmerising animals from around the globe.
Different Worlds Once you’ve stared upwards in a forest full of fireflies, watched on as two enormous elephant seals fight for domination or stood inside a tornado, there are even more zones to explore. Micro Life takes you into a world not able to be seen by the naked eye, while Water Life goes to the ocean’s depths. There’s even a creepy-crawly room divided into two sections: one shows insects in their colourful beauty and the other may just make your skin crawl.
Making it Work All this is made possible using the latest audio-visual technology in a huge space with multiple screens all angled in different directions. There’s no specific way or order to view the footage. Take your time, look all around you, go up on the raised viewing platforms for a different angle and listen for the silky tones of David Attenborough’s narration. BBC Earth Experience, including the box office, gift shop and cafe, is fully accessible. Relaxed sessions will be held once a month, offering higher lighting, lowered sound levels and ear defenders available to borrow. + bbcearthexperience.com

What's On
In 2019, the BBC’s most-watched factual TV show of the year was Seven Worlds, One Planet. The first episode featured Australia and it helped the show to become a massive hit here, too. It’s not surprising, considering there were 92 shoots across 41 countries and 1,794 days to make the series, and the footage featured wilderness regions that had never been seen before by large audiences.

Ernie’s Empire
Ernie Takes Over Melbourne Central
Ernie on the Melbourne Central Shot Tower Brolga
24
There’s a new creature in town. This summer, head to Melbourne Central to meet Australia’s hottest street art identity.
Meet the Artist
With an aesthetic honed from his graphic design background, Brolga mixes daydream-like doodles with simple iconography to create his worlds and characters. Growing up in Australia, his family would often make days-long trips across the country, moving house from Queensland to the Northern Territory and back. It’s on these road trips that Brolga began his art, illustrating his surreal and imaginative characters while journeying through the remote terrains of his home.
Creature Feature Brolga's latest creation, which moves from the 2D world to three dimensions, will debut at Melbourne Central in December and will be there until early January. Brolga created this unique sculptural piece inspired by the city, the culture and the people of Melbourne.
So who is Ernie? Often mistaken for either a rabbit, a kangaroo or some type of long-eared dog, Ernie doesn’t mind. Unfazed by the ambiguity, Ernie embraces his creative nature. By day, Ernie leads spirited street art tours of the city. By night, he can often be found perched in a camp chair outside Melbourne Central’s Nike Store at 3am, being extra early for the next morning’s limited-edition shoe release.
Visit Ernie Don’t miss your chance to hang out with Ernie this summer at Melbourne Central’s Shot Tower Square. Over the holiday season, giant inflatable sculptures of Ernie will take over the much-loved Shot Tower under the cone (one of the most photographed landmarks of Melbourne). To complement the art exhibit, Melbourne Central has created a souvenir shop in Shot Tower Square, inspired by Ernie and Brolga's vision. From 7 to 23 December, Melbourne Central visitors can earn tokens while they shop and redeem them for exclusive Ernie merch – think hoodies, tees, bucket hats and kitschy novelty items. Here for a good time, not a long time – see you at Melbourne Central this summer. + melbournecentral.com.au + brolga.com

Brolga is an Australian-based artist and illustrator who gained recognition for his large-scale wheat pastes, street art and murals on the streets of New York. He created a mural of Muhammad Ali in Williamsburg, and his crazy wheatpaste characters, large-scale murals and pop-styled street art became part of the fabric of New York City.

Melbourne’s Concrete Canvas Melbourne Indepth: An ongoing RMIT series on Melbourne culture. Compiled by Professor Francis Farrelly, Dr Amanda Spry and Associate Professor Bernardo Figueredo (RMIT Marketing Faculty)
Ephemeral Energy The ephemeral nature of street art brings energy to Melbourne. It’s ever-present, on the walls and along the footpaths, permanent yet impermanent, making it difficult to be collected and protected by the city’s galleries and libraries. But the fact that street art is temporary is also part of its appeal. It is a living, breathing piece of Melbourne. Street art has become a space for dialogue between different street artists, sometimes building on each other’s work, commenting on evolving issues or representing different sides of the conversation.
Cultural Comment The veins of the city (its laneways) are the perfect canvas for this art. The artistic expression on the streets is not only decorative, it plays a part in cultural commentary. Its visual energy is bold, inspiring, humorous, edgy, striking, grotesque, celebratory and contemplative. It often addresses issues like inequality, social justice and human rights. One example sits on a windowsill in Hosier Lane, where the appearance of a melted tennis ball sculpture in early 2020 coincided with the Australian Open, emblazoned with the message #ClimateCrisis.
have inspired large-scale murals (the Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat tribute in Collingwood) and great works have been revised to scrutinise and challenge politics and society. Melbourne artist Julie Shiels’ The Grandmasters art installation appeared on the walls of a Fitzroy construction site in 2020 and depicts famous artworks altered to include the heads and notorious comments of Australian politicians.
High Culture
As well as being a street artist, Julie Shiels is a Senior Research Fellow at RMIT University. “Street art gives you lots of opportunities to experiment,” she says. “It fits Melbourne because the laneways offer the possibility of a chance encounter, and the best street art adds to this sense of surprise. Melbourne street art can be spontaneous, fleeting and transgressive and it’s possible to have a more private and intimate engagement when surrounded by a work discovered by chance.”
Fine art and street art aren’t necessarily mutually exclusive. Some street art in Melbourne is an extension of fine art. Great artists
Although street art might capture the general public’s imagination more than fine art, important works ▸
The eclectic mix of street art resonates with a city that holds open minds and multiculturalism in high regard. It also speaks to its heritage of music, street life, and irreverent art and artists.

What began as an underground art movement has become fundamental to Melbourne’s identity and a major tourist attraction. It is not just the quality and prominence of the city’s street art that puts it on the international stage, but also the fact that it fits so neatly with the character of Melbourne. Street art challenges the viewer to reflect on the essence of the city and what it means to live there.

of urban art have also appeared in traditional art galleries like the National Gallery of Victoria. The NGV exhibited the artwork of First Peoples artist Reko Rennie (Initiation, 2013), a street artist from Melbourne’s west. This summer, the works of elusive street artist Banksy will be exhibited at a gallery in Melbourne (details to be announced).
Urban Identity Adrian Doyle, a multi-awardwinning street artist and director of Melbourne’s longest-running urban art studio, Blender Studios, echoes similar sentiments when talking
42
about the street art of Melbourne. “From the famous legal lanes to the hidden and underground treasures, there is something for everyone to discover in one of the world’s largest public art galleries,” he says. Street art is so central to the city’s identity that it is even part of the branding of certain suburbs. Everfresh, a neighbourhood street art studio, created the “Welcome to Sunny Fitzroy” piece that covers the entire side wall of the Night Cat club on Johnston Street, projecting an artistic and bohemian image for the innernorth suburb.

Art Reflecting Life What is perhaps most influential and meaningful about Melbourne street art is that it reflects local culture and adds to the aesthetic beauty and liveability of the city. This is a powerful motivator for preservation. Explore the best of street art in the city’s cobbled bluestone lanes, including Hosier Lane, AC/DC Lane, Blender, Maloney, Drewery and Caledonian Lanes, Duckboard Place and so many more.◼

Deadly Divas Something special is happening on Narrm’s food scene, with Indigenous flavours firmly in the spotlight and accomplished women reclaiming culinary kudos. By James Saunders (Gunditjmara and Wiradjuri)
Thanks to three impressive eateries – Pawa Cafe and Bar, Interlude and Big Esso by Mabu Mabu – Narrm offers a range of exciting hospitality choices with a Blackfella twist.
Island Style Mabu Mabu (a saying from the Torres Strait that means ‘help yourself’) is an Indigenous-owned food business on a mission to make native ingredients the hero of the Australian kitchen. Chef and owner Nornie Bero hails from Mer Island in the Torres Strait. The islands are a diverse region, where Asian and Polynesian culinary traditions have had a significant impact on the cooking culture. It all began with a stall at the South Melbourne Market, where Nornie sold sauces and condiments made from native ingredients. Now, Big Esso, the Mabu Mabu restaurant, has found its home in Fed Square, Melbourne’s visitor epicentre. Make sure to add it to your list of must-visit places. Pawa means ‘to cook’ in the Gundijtmara language. As a Gunditjmara woman, Niyoka takes inspiration from her cultural ties to the people of the southwestern region of the state. These connections permeate the meals they serve. At Pawa, you’ll discover a traditional cafe experience infused with flavours such as wattleseed, warrigal greens and quandong. Incorporating ethical and sustainable practices is fundamental to the owners, who source ingredients from a network of Indigenous native food growers, while creating employment opportunities for the Indigenous community.
Classy Cocktails Over in Windsor, on Melbourne’s famous Chapel Street, is the new kid on the block, Interlude Cocktail Bar & Dining. Owners Kayla Truth (Gurang and Quandamooka) and Apryl Day (Yorta Yorta, Wemba Wemba and Barapa Barapa) provide a sophisticated, sensual and luxurious cocktail and dining experience.

Favourite places for summer days?
Your favourite coffee spot?
These days our lives revolve around our three-year-old son, so summer days aren’t too wild! On a nice day, we might go to Melbourne Zoo or the Royal Botanic Gardens. If we get the chance for a more grown-up summer evening in the city, the rooftop at Pinchy’s is fantastic for bubbles and a lobster roll.
There’s nothing like a good toastie and coffee from Via Porta in North Balwyn. When we’re close to home, that’s our go-to. Pillar of Salt in Richmond is a cityside favourite.
Favourite casual restaurant? We’re big foodies, and Melbourne has some incredible restaurants. Ca Com Bánh Mì Bar in Richmond is incredible for a good sandwich. ▸

Favourite restaurant for a celebration? My wife picks the restaurants and I pick the food! We like to go out for a nice family dinner once a month, but Entrecôte in Prahran is perfect for a special occasion. It’s been our family go-to for years now and it never disappoints. The steak frites and caviar are the best!
Your favourite gallery? I love the vibe at NGV and being inspired by the classics. I’ve started

Favourite summer event? I love going to the tennis at the Australian Open. My first introduction to painting a mural [for work] was for the AO and I’ve been every year since. I enjoy the atmosphere and the vibe – it’s also the best location. I hang out at Grand Slam Oval, catch up with mates over a beer and watch the games.◼
I’ve painted a mural in Melbourne Central. There are so many brands I like there that I can’t find in the ’burbs, so I go there to browse.

Wander and Wonder Discover the library's weird and wonderful history with Wander, a free, self-guided digital tour.
Light Reading Experience one of the most revered places in State Library Victoria. The Redmond Barry Reading Room, with its mezzanine gallery and ceiling of skylights, houses general non-fiction books, as well as journal and magazine collections. Every day, its desks are filled with students, researchers, creatives and dreamers. In October, a new resident arrived; the space is now the permanent home of Ned Kelly’s armour.
Past Residents The reading room wasn’t always a study space. It originally opened as McCoy Hall in 1899 and, for almost a century, was home to the National
Museum. Visitors would come and see displays of taxidermy animals, including the legendary racehorse Phar Lap, from all over the world.

How does your personal style inform your designs at Ngali?
Do you have a favourite shopping street? Taking walks through suburban shopping strips like in Gertrude, Brunswick and Smith Streets is still a favourite way for me to shop and find inspiration. I’m sure there are more. I just need to find them!

Timeless designs from the fashion label were recently showcased at fashion week events in Melbourne and Dubai where Indigenous artwork, used in the brand’s signature luxurious and vivid fabric prints, was brought to life. Francisco’s underlying commitment to slow fashion and respect for Country sets the scene for positive change. Here’s her take on fashion in Melbourne’s summer months.
What’s your trend forecast for summer? I think colour is key. Colour brings optimism, and we can all do with more of that! It can make us feel free and happy and gives us a sense of space.
Melbourne fashion famously favours black. How does colour inform your designs?
Where is your go-to spot to find the perfect pieces to finish off an outfit? Bared Footwear for boots and sneakers and First Peoples’ websites – like angejeffery.com – for jewellery.

Live and Loud
Live and Loud Rocking the Suburbs
There’s no better time to get into Melbourne’s live music scene than summer, when touring bands hit the venues and festivals rock the suburbs.
In Footscray, Hotel Westwood offers free music ranging from country to hip-hop from a variety of local acts, along with trivia nights every Thursday. Northcote’s Merri Creek Tavern is a local watering hole coowned by Melbourne muso Mick Thomas. Its line-up features an eclectic assortment of up-and-coming bands, from both here and overseas. In Richmond, the Corner Hotel is a legendary live music spot. It’s been rocking since the 1940s and has seen stars like Mick Jagger, David Gilmour and the White Stripes perform in its rowdy 800-person bandroom. + hotelwestwood.com.au + instagram.com/ merricreektavern + cornerhotel.com
St Kilda Vibes It’s been named Victoria’s first Live Music Precinct, so you’ll always find a band to see in St Kilda. Hotel Esplanade, better known as the Espy, is an institution when it comes to live gigs, and has hosted the likes of G Flip, Darude and Starcrawler in the Gershwin Room. It also offers comedy and open mic nights. Part of the local RSL, Memo Music Hall tends to attract an older crowd – thanks to the cabaret-style set-up – for its alt-country, big band and alternative gigs. Festival Fun It’s fun and free. Sunset Sounds sees great local bands playing in Malvern East’s Central Park in January. Bring a picnic rug and your best dance moves. Get that Parisian feeling at So Frenchy So Chic (14 January) at Werribee Park. Catch Grammy-winning La Femme, singer-songwriter Briard, and Australian-French duo Kill the Pain, as well as lots more acts and plenty of delicious food and wine. If you’re still in a festival mood, St Jerome’s Laneway Festival (10 February) hits Wurundjeri Biik (The Park, Flemington) with Stormzy, Steve Lacy, Dominik Fike and heaps more. + stonnington.vic.gov.au/ sunsetsounds + sofrenchysochic.com + lanewayfestival.com Check out Melbourne's Night Network of trains, trams and buses and catch public transport to and from your night out.

Elwood Days
Every big day of adventure should start with a decent breakfast. Beachcomber Cafe has bay views and an excellent range of early morning sweet and savoury dishes, as well as great coffee and smoothies, to get you going.
If you’re feeling energetic, keep walking past the marina and out to the lighthouse. You’re almost in Elwood, which has a more relaxed vibe than its neighbour. Got your swimsuit with you? Head to the water in front of the surf club – look for the flags that mark out a safe, patrolled spot to swim – and cool off. There is plenty of space on the lawns behind the beach to relax and read a book or let the kids loose on the swings in the playground.
On Sundays, visit the arts and crafts stalls of St Kilda Esplanade Market all along the beachfront parade. Everything on sale here, from jewellery to handmade soaps, is created in Australia. Beautiful Brighton Along the waterfront, there are plenty of attractions to explore, including the Middle Brighton Pier near the Royal Brighton Yacht Club. Luckily, Brighton Beach Hotel sits at the end of the beach. New to The Goods Shed, next door to Ballarat Railway Station, is Itinerant Spirits, where visitors can join an interactive spirits masterclass and sample whiskey, gin and vodka made using grains that are locally grown and malted.
A quick and budget-friendly V/Line train ride from Melbourne makes Ballarat a perfect weekend or day trip. When you jump off the train, look for the Neuron e-bike rentals outside the station. From here, cross the road to the start of the Lake Wendouree loop ride. Taking in the lake and Ballarat Botanical Gardens, it’s a 10-kilometre ride with lots of attractions to explore and cafes along the way. If you’re riding on the second or fourth Saturday of the month, you’ll pass the Ballarat Farmers’ Market, where you can gather everything needed for a picnic. There’s also live music in the gardens during January, thanks to Summer Sundays.
Spend a couple of days surrounded by a natural oasis at the Garden of St Erth, near Blackwood. Here, luxury glamping tents offer the perfect option for sleeping beneath the stars to prepare for bushwalking in Lerderderg State Park.
At this time of year, a variety of summer truffle (rarely found in Victoria) emerges from beneath the earth near Ballarat. Each weekend guests can join Liam Downes of Black Cat Truffles and his dogs in a truffle hunt. Enjoy a six-course degustation featuring truffles and produce from the kitchen gardens after the morning hunt. Or join the afternoon hunt with grazing platters afterwards.
There’s no need to rough it in one of the three Unyoked tiny cabins located on the estate of Peerick Wines. It’s a wonderful way to enjoy nature and a great base for exploring the Pyrenees wine region to the west of Ballarat. + visitballarat.com.au

Courts to Courses
Retired tennis champ Ash Barty has always loved her time on the golf course. Here, she takes to the green to tell us about her favourite Mornington Peninsula courses.
Just weeks after she retired from tennis, Aussie legend Ash Barty was showing her serious skills in another sport. She walked away the winner of the ladies’ golf championship at her local club in Queensland. It should come as no surprise she’d excel, having already dominated the world of tennis and mastered cricket. Plus, she’s got a willing partner in husband Garry Kissick, a scratch golfer and regular caddy for good friend Louis Dobbelaar.
On the Road Whenever the couple are in Melbourne, they head to the Mornington Peninsula, where more than 15 golf courses make the most of the beautiful landscape and its natural contours. “Moonah Links at Fingal is really special,” says Ash. “There are two courses there – the Open and the Legends. The Open was designed especially for the 2003 Australian Open, so it’s pretty challenging. The Legends is a bit kinder, but still a great spot to play 18 holes.”
Courses Aplenty One of the features Ash and other keen golfers can’t get enough of is the spectacular ocean views from many courses.

“Playing on the clifftop at Flinders Golf Club is pretty special,” says Ash. “You’re looking right over Bass Strait. Peninsula Kingswood Country Golf Club is one of my favourites. The Mornington Peninsula is just an hour out of Melbourne and an excellent spot for keen golfers to spend a few days. Along with the wide choice of world-class courses to play, there are stunning accommodation options, wineries, farm gates and restaurants to fill in the hours between holes. “If you haven’t been to Pt Leo Estate, you’re in for a great experience,” says Ash. “There’s an amazing sculpture garden, a cellar door where you can do tastings, and a couple of places to eat.
