WORCESTER city A visit to the Midlands wouldn’t be complete without a couple of days spent exploring the historic streets of Worcester, and relaxing by the riverside just moments away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Worcester’s unique location on the River Severn ensures that you’ll never be far away from a green open space with award-winning parks, playing fields, meadows and sports grounds aplenty, allowing for plenty of exciting outdoor activities. Worcester Racecourse and Worcestershire County Cricket Ground are located on the river moments away from the city centre, where you can bask in the sunshine (weather permitting), whilst having a flutter at the races or cheering on your favourite cricket team. The City is very well-equipped for sports lovers, with the University of Worcester Arena offering premiership and wheelchair basketball matches and Worcester Warriors having premiership rugby fixtures at Sixways Stadium.

4

The dramatic Worcester Cathedral rises out of the City landscape and nestles alongside Britain’s longest river, the River Severn. The Cathedral houses Royal tombs; most notorious is ‘bad’ King John, famed for signing Magna Carta over 800 years ago. Prince Arthur, Queen Elizabeth I’s cousin, is also buried in the Cathedral, as well as three-time Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin; the only Prime Minister to have ever served under three monarchs.

The Cathedral is a great place to escape the heat on a summer’s day and is home to a varied events programme, which includes celebrating Worcester’s connection with Shakespeare every October. The Cathedral’s best kept secret is its medieval library which has been housed there since the days when it was a university for monks. The Cathedral Library also contains some original scores by Sir Edward Elgar, England’s finest composer. Elgar was born on the outskirts of Worcester in Lower Broadheath and lived and worked in the City. In June 2017 it will be Elgar’s 160th birthday and to celebrate, Worcester will be hosting a varied programme of events celebrating the life and works of Worcester’s famous son.

Worcester’s fascinating history makes the City an extremely interesting place to visit, with Cavaliers and Roundheads marching through the City’s streets at various English Civil War re-enactment events, including the Living History weekends at Worcester’s Civil War centre.

Worcester City museums THE COMMANDERY MUSEUM site formed the army’s Headquarters during the English Civil War. In 2017 a wing of the historic building will be transformed into a new museum and history centre to commemorate the first and last battles of the bloody war, bringing to life tales of treason, treachery and tragedy. THE COMMANDERY Is located next to Fort Royal Park, where John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, two former American Presidents, visited and pronounced: “And do Englishmen so soon forget the ground where liberty was fought for? Tell your neighbours and your children that this is holy ground; much holier than that on which your churches stand. All England should come in pilgrimage to this hill once a year.” THE MUSEUM OF ROYAL WORCESTER is located on the former Worcester Porcelain Factory site just two minutes’ walk from the Cathedral. The Museum is undergoing an exciting refurbishment in 2017, but will remain partially open and run special offers throughout. If you love history and heritage there is also The Greyfriars’ House and Garden (National Trust), Tudor House Museum, Worcester Art Gallery and Museum and the imposing Guildhall to explore.

Worcester’s event programme is huge! Whatever your interests, you’ll be sure to find a festival or event to add to your annual list:

WHAT'S ON

Love Worcester Heritage Festival (February), Worcester Motor Festival (May), Worcestershire LitFest & Fringe Festival (June), Worcester Foodie Festival (July), Worcester CAMRA Beer, Cider & Perry Festival (August), Worcester Festival (August), Worcester Music Festival (September) Worcester Victorian Christmas Fayre (November) ...are just a few. The world’s oldest music festival, the Three Choirs Festival (July/August) rotates annually between Worcester, Hereford and Gloucester, and in 2017, classical music will be emanating through Worcester’s streets, City venues and of course throughout the magnificent Cathedral.

If you love eating out, or are just on the look out for some local pub grub then you’ll be delighted by the choice of cuisine and restaurants on offer. Worcester’s food offer will increase this summer, as Cathedral Square opens to include a wide choice of popular chain restaurants. The City’s retail offer is unique, with more independent retailers than most can boast. Along with the usual High Street brands, this makes Worcester a great shopping destination. Take a stroll through the old quarter and browse boutique clothes shops, independent jewellers and various unique retailers offering something a little bit special.

WORCESTER’S RURAL LOCATION, HISTORIC PAST AND UNIQUE SHOPPING OFFER MAKES A VISIT TO WORCESTER A VERY ATTRACTIVE PROPOSITION. For more information on how to plan your short break or holiday, please visit www.visitworcestershire.org

MALVERN HILLS Standing at over one thousand feet, the Malvern Hills offer 15km of ideal walking and breath-taking scenery for everyone to enjoy.

The hills are thought to be around 700 million years old, dividing the beautiful English countryside of Herefordshire and Worcestershire. The entire length contains around 160km of bridleways and footpaths for people to explore and also features 88 springs and fountains which flow from outlets all around. However, Malvern is not just a popular destination for walkers, there are so many other reasons to live in, visit and experience this wonderful place, including independent shops, cafes, restaurants, theatres and festivals. Great Malvern lies at the foot of the hills and is largely Victorian with its superb architecture and working gas lamps, believed to have inspired elements of the Chronicles of Narnia novels by C. S. Lewis. The town originated as a spa village with therapeutic qualities attributed to its

6

springs. The Victorian popularity of the Water Cure then transformed Malvern into a Water Cure town in the 19th Century. Edward Elgar and George Bernard Shaw later brought Great Malvern into the 20th Century with their music and theatre festivals held in the Winter Gardens, now known as Priory Park. Today the park is home to a grand theatre complex and a Victorian bandstand, where brass bands often play at regular events.

With its dramatic hills and striking landscape, the Malvern Hills area was designated an ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’ in 1959. The charm of Great Malvern today is still its unspoilt natural beauty, rich cultural heritage and historic roots. It remains popular for both residents and visitors alike.

Malvern event highlights include the Internationally acclaimed Autumn in Malvern Festival, Royal 3 Counties Show, Great Malvern Food Festival, Malvern Munch Food Walk, Water & Well Dressing Festival. Key attractions include Malvern Theatres and Morgan Cars. Each year a series of outdoor cinema events take place, plus a series of regular food and craft markets, all organised by Malvern Hills District Council.

Upton is steeped in history with its 17th Century buildings running through the town including the iconic “Pepperpot” - a distinctive medieval church tower topped by a cupola in place of a spire. The Pepperpot played a crucial part in one of the most dramatic episodes of the Civil War, where Oliver Cromwell’s soldiers crossed the Upton Bridge to win the Battle of Upton before the main Battle of Worcester in the English Civil War. The Pepperpot is now home to the Tourist Information and Heritage Centre where a warm welcome awaits.

This lively historic riverside town hosts an array of award winning festivals. These include the longstanding Jazz Festival, The Folk Festival, Blues, Sunshine, and much more, all offering live music, processions and a great atmosphere.

Upton contains a variety of small, independently owned shops, businesses and pubs. It also offers visitors regular boating trips on the Conway Castle - the largest passenger vessel on the River Severn, with its three upper decks allowing for magnificent panoramic views.

Tenbury is a small ancient market town nestled peacefully in the beautiful Teme Valley on the banks of the River Teme. Tenbury had the ‘Wells’ added to its name in the mid-19th century to help promote the mineral water wells that had been found in the town from 1840 onwards. The mineral waters brought about the building in 1862 of the now restored Tenbury Spa, or Pump Rooms as it is generally known. The unspoilt landscape is perfect for exploring by walking, cycling or driving. The Teme Valley Trail guide, available online or from Tenbury Tourist Information Centre, showcases the best of the Teme Valley countryside and offers walking and cycling routes that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and abilities.

The town has a wide range of independent shops, pubs, restaurants, cafes, and a wonderful example of an art deco cinema that is still open today. The area is also well known for its hops and cider apples, and the mistletoe plant has been associated with this area of the UK for centuries.

A whole host of popular events are held each year in Tenbury, such as the annual Apple Fest and the Tenbury Countryside Show. It is also home to the famous Mistletoe Festival, one of the largest mistletoe sales in Britain, where you will find entertainment, activities and pagan traditions that celebrate the mistletoe crop.

Broadway Cotswolds The beautiful Worcestershire Cotswolds have inspired many artists and was a regular relaxation destination for writers, including J.M. Barrie. During his visits to the county, he penned a pamphlet, "The Allahakbarrie Book of Broadway Cricket" (1899), which is an amusing, whimsical account of his cricketing endeavours in the Cotswolds.

Worcestershire has inspired many writers, musicians and artists over the years. Discover something to inspire you in every corner of this county.

C.S. Lewis first discovered the beauty of Malvern when he studied at Malvern College from the age of 11 for three academic years. During his adult years he enjoyed revisiting the hillside town regularly. A winter walk around the Victorian resort town will seem reminiscent of many of his books. In keeping with its heritage, Malvern has retained its historical gas lamps. These are abundant throughout Priory Park and up into the hills. Great Malvern train station has also been restored to its former Victorian splendour.

THE LION, THE WITCH AND THE WARDROBE by CS Lewis Š copyright CS Lewis Pte Ltd 1950.

A.E. Milne, P.G. Wodehouse, Jerome K. Jerome and Arthur Conan Doyle, were regulars in Barrie's amateur cricket team from 1890 to 1913. They played against actors and artists lead by the American actress Mary de Navarro, whom Barrie was much taken with.

Even after making Oxford his home, C.S. Lewis would regularly visit the county with his friend J.R.R. Tolkien, they would walk the Malvern Hills with close friend George Sayer. During a recording made by George Sayer, Tolkien referred to the trio walking the hills and how he would compare parts of the Malvern Hills to the White Mountains of Gondor. Taken from Jack: A Life of C. S. Lewis by George Sayer, Š 1988, 1994.

Slightly more adventurous visitors could take a bike ride around the Malvern Hills, following in the cycle tracks of Elgar. With the release of the modern bike design in the late 1890s, Elgar loved to partake in the latest Edwardian craze of bike riding while living in Malvern. The Elgar Route is signposted with Brown Signs for those who want to follow the sights by vehicle; a route of about 35 miles will take you around the foothills of the Malverns, weaving in and out of the counties of Worcestershire and Herefordshire. With links over the border in Herefordshire, take time to visit Hereford Cathedral and see the Elgar statue in Cathedral Close. www.visitworcestershire.org/elgar

2017 will see the 160th Anniversary of the birth of Sir Edward Elgar and there are many ways you can celebrate this in Worcestershire! During the festival Worcester will recognise arguably its most famous citizen and undoubtedly Britain’s most famous composer, with a series of events taking place including concerts, walks & talks, exhibitions of rare Elgar memorabilia and much more. This is your chance to come and immerse yourself in the life and times of Elgar in the city he called home. You can visit places he lived, take in the famous venues he played, as well as exploring the wider county on the Elgar Trail.

Elgar's Birthplace is located in Lower Broadheath and will reopen in spring, run by the National Trust. This is a popular attraction for those interested in following Elgar’s life around the county. We are looking forward to seeing the developments made by the National Trust team over the winter months.

home of The Cold War Experience at Broadway Tower Fifteen feet below the ground in a field beside Broadway Tower is an underground bunker, a relic of the Cold War. Over 1500 “secret” bunkers were built nationwide between 1955 and 1962 to measure the impact of a nuclear explosion and resultant radioactive fallout. Manned by men and women of the Royal Observer Corps, the conditions down below were very primitive with no running water, gas or mains electricity. Closed in 1991, the Broadway Tower bunker has now been fully restored to represent the operational setup of the 1980s.

The Ashmolean Museum Broadway will become the Broadway Museum and Art Gallery in February 2017. The changes will enable the Community Museum to tell more of the rich history of Broadway. New exhibits will look at the village’s medieval roots and its role in the lucrative wool trade between 1327 and 1550, the coaching heritage which emerged between 1550 and 1850 and Broadway’s more recent history as an inspiration for late 19th and early 20th century artists. This will be in addition to the museum’s role in displaying artworks and visiting exhibitions loaned from the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford.

George Marshall Medical Museum The George Marshall Medial Museum shows the advances made in medicine via a collection of objects from over the past 250 years. Did you know if your teeth fell out 200 years ago and you were wealthy, your new set of gnashers might just have come from the mouth of a dead soldier from the Battle of Waterloo! Tooth decay and bad breath were the norm for those in the 1800s and recycled real teeth were the best option.

Museum of Carpet There is little that compares to the profound beauty of an antique carpet; if hung in a gallery, they would be viewed as works of art. It is not just for the intricate detail of the design nor the incomparable artistry of the patterns, but each carpet is woven with a rich and vibrant history. Yet for many people, carpet is simply ignored as we walk over it. The Museum of Carpet wants to challenge this and so it takes visitors on a guided tour through Kidderminster’s 300 year old history of carpet making. Visitors can see how the town started weaving ‘stuff’ - a heavy, rough fabric before carpets were made. And the highlight of the tour is watching the power looms run, weaving carpet before their eyes.

See the ‘Waterloo Teeth’ on display amongst other interesting artefacts at the George Marshall Medical Musem. There is free parking for museum visitors in the Charles Hastings Education Centre’s car park and the Museum is open Monday to Friday 9am-5pm.

Worcester Cathedral

2017 marks the 150th Anniversary of three times Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin’s birth who was MP for Bewdley from 1908 to 1937. During this time he helped Britain through the General Strike, the Depression and the Abdication of Edward VII. Baldwin’s most notable position was his support of parliamentary democracy during times when revolution and dictatorship were common European experiences. His father’s family were wealthy industrialists and he helped his father create what was, from 1902, one of Britain’s largest iron and steel firms, Baldwin’s Ltd. His mother’s family had artistic and literary interests: his uncles included the artists Sir Edward Burne-Jones and Sir Edward Poynter, and Rudyard Kipling was a cousin. Stanley Baldwin’s ashes are buried along with those of his wife in Worcester Cathedral. This year the Cathedral plans to remember him with a service of commemoration and a series of talks. www.worcestercathedral.co.uk

A new exhibition, which includes over a 188 poems, launches at the National Trust Croome, near Worcester. ‘Plumlines’ is a collection of real life stories expressed through poetry, written by people from across Worcestershire about their female relatives life during the First World War.

Three Choirs Festival The internationally-renowned Three Choirs Festival returns to Worcester in July 2017 for a week of magnificent music-making in the cathedral and a range of intimate, beautiful venues across the county. Bookended by concerts celebrating great British composers such as Elgar, Vaughan Williams, Britten and Tippett, the rest

The inspiration for Plumlines came from a little known story at Croome, of how American Heiress Viscountess Deerhurst, helped the 9th Earl of Coventry mobilise Pershore’s first ever Women’s Institute by encouraging 100 women to meet. The centenary of that meeting is on 21 November 2016.

of the week features choral classics by Mozart, Mendelssohn and Fauré; monumental symphonic organ works from Poulenc and Saint-Säens; music inspired by events of 1917 from Shostakovich’s twelfth symphony to Dixieland jazz and Joplin ragtime; latenight Bach and Vivaldi and a host of family events and workshops.

Through an imaginative exhibition, which includes 188 saplings created from vintage paper, it is hoped that the story of the Earl, The Viscountess and the First World War takes root at Croome. The exhibition will run until the end of 2017. Croome is open throughout the year. Normal admission applies.

David Cox and his Contemporaries Discover the vibrant art scene of the West Midlands during the nineteenth century through the work of Birmingham born David Cox. Renowned for his landscape paintings, this exhibition explores the artists that influenced Cox, as well as the influence that his own work and writing had on watercolour painting, landscape art and the vibrant artistic communities of the Midlands. Bringing together Worcester’s amazing collection of paintings by Cox with works high profile loans by Turner and Constable from the British Museum, this exhibition uses rarely displayed artworks to explore Cox’s place as a world class artist. Taking the story of making and collecting art into the 21st century, the exhibition will also host work by recent graduates as part of New Art West Midlands 2017, accompanied by a selection of works from the Worcester City collection acquired through the Contemporary Art Society.

A new arts project will bring a fresh creative spirit to Worcestershire’s waterways during 2017. Led by the Canal & River Trust, ‘The Ring’ will be an 18 month long series of events and commissions celebrating the region’s canals and rivers, focused around the 21 mile circle of waterways made up by the Worcester & Birmingham Canal, the Droitwich canals and the River Severn. Artists will draw their inspiration through working with local communities before reflecting on the area’s cultural heritage through their artwork, which could be anything from sculptures to performance pieces or installations. Activities will take place at different times, check the website for dates and times.
