Worcester is one of the oldest cities in the country, with evidence of settlements here dating back to 700BC. The city was fortified in Saxon times and its history can still be seen in the landscape today, from cobbled Tudor streets to elegant Queen Anne architecture. The street layout hasn’t changed since the Middle Ages; you can visit the remnants of the once majestic city walls and walk the path once trod by Romans.

The city is said by some to be the ‘birthplace of democracy’, thanks in part to its function in the creation of the Magna Carta and its roles in the Civil War. Also, Edward Winslow – one of the founding fathers and inspiration for the American constitution – was educated here at the Cathedral.

Amid the city centre hustle and bustle, Worcester has an abundance of beautiful parks and peaceful gardens perfect for walking and cycling. The stunning bridge at Diglis creates an easy circular route along the banks of the Severn or, if you prefer more of a challenge, you can be in the heart of the countryside within a few minutes. The Civil War playground at Fort Royal Park has some of the best views across the city. On sunny weekends, pack a picnic and listen to live music from the bandstand in Gheluvelt Park or enjoy a spot of tennis at the Cripplegate courts.

5

Worcester has a lively and vibrant cultural scene with an ever-increasing number of independent arts venues in the city centre and surrounding area. Every year Worcester plays host to a huge number of events with large-scale festivals for music, literature, food, gin, dance and beer sitting alongside community events like Carnival and Pride. Whatever your interests, you’re sure to find an event for you!

A variety of self-guided trails are available from www.visitworcester.co.uk or from the Tourist Information Centre on the High Street. You can also book a guided tour of the city, packed full of fascinating facts and stories.

Worcester is a sporting hub with fixtures all year round. Most famously, Worcestershire County Cricket Club plays cricket at England’s most beautiful sporting ground and Worcester Warriors attracts thousands of visitors to watch premiership rugby at Sixways. Worcester Wolves play first division basketball at the University Arena and horse-racing takes place throughout the summer at the picturesque riverside setting of Worcester Racecourse.

The mighty River Severn is Britain’s longest river. It runs from the Welsh mountains down to the flatlands of the Severn estuary. Along its journey it winds through Worcester city centre with scenic views, relaxing environments and plenty of opportunities to spot wildlife.

The towpath is well maintained and provides ample opportunity to explore the scenery by foot or by bike.

The Worcestershire Connection 2020 marks the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower ship voyage to the ‘New World’ of America. The first permanent settlers began their epic journey inspired by an unquenchable desire for freedom and the promised of newfound liberty. The crossing of the Mayflower in 1620 and the relationship between the Pilgrims and Wampanoag are iconic moments in America’s narrative which ultimately changed the course of world history. There are over 30 million US descendants of the passengers and crew who sailed on the Mayflower. Worcestershire can tell the story of the Winslow and More passengers and how they came to be on the ship.

Edward Winslow, Pilgrim Leader • Born in 1595 to a Salt Merchant in Droitwich Spa. • Received a scholarship for Kings School, Worcester Cathedral from the age of 10. • Printing and distributing illegal Separatist leaflets before joining them in 1617 in Leiden. • Ambassador to the Wampanoag Nation and their leader Massasoit. • Diplomatic leader, settling disputes and agreeing trade routes, land and fishing rights. • The first Thanksgiving in November 1621 was captured in a letter from Edward. • Appointed by Oliver Cromwell to lead the confiscation of property from royalty commission. • Died in 1655 before reaching the West Indies where he was to be Governor of Jamaica.

Worcestershire’s Vale & SPA With visitors welcomed by the ancient honey-coloured limestone buildings, it’s instantly recognisable that Broadway is something special. Being the jewel of the Worcestershire Cotswolds makes Broadway a favoured tourist destination in the UK, attracting thousands of visitors worldwide. One of its most popular attractions is Broadway Tower – a unique Capability Brown Folly Tower and the second highest point on the Cotswold escarpment. Travel is aided with the newly re-opened steam railway station, creating links with surrounding towns and villages. The Lido is one of the few remaining inland, openair salt water swimming pools in the UK. It attracts visitors from far and wide, enhanced by its location within the beautiful award-winning Lido Park.

Often portrayed as a picturepostcard village, Broadway is situated in the Cotswolds, a nationally recognised area of outstanding natural beauty.

Salt is arguably the most renowned product from this town. It has been harvested by evaporating spring water since before the Iron Age, used to pay Roman Soldiers, and now Droitwich’s very own salt can be purchased once again. The town owes its existence to the natural brine springs below the ground, resulting in buoyancy only rivalled by the Dead Sea! Surrounded by beautiful countryside and a destination on the Worcester-Birmingham canal, Droitwich Spa is very well connected and appeals to a variety of interests.

Steeped in history, Evesham has many stories to tell...

Renowned for commercial market gardening and home to Vale of Evesham Asparagus (with protected name status), local produce is of top quality thanks to the exceptionally fertile soil. The glorious River Avon meandering around the town adds to a list of wonderful assets, including a fantastic array of unique events which are all worthy of a visit. The Bell Tower is the town’s last remaining monument following the dissolution of the Monasteries. It was also the venue of Simon de Montfort’s death during the famous Battle of Evesham.

A market town on the banks of the River Avon, Pershore is best known for its Abbey and locally grown plums. The latter is the catalyst for the multi awardwinning Plum Festival, generating thousands of visitors who embrace this elegant town with its exceptional Georgian architecture.

The main high street is awash with independent shops, food, and drink outlets. Together with the indoor market in the town, it attracts visitors looking for unique gifts and experiences.

www.valeandspa.co.uk

The natural habitats created in and around the town, via the Avon Meadow Wetlands, enable a thriving and diverse wildlife environment. Pershore is a beautiful tranquil town where escaping city life can be enjoyed to the full.

13

Multiple rivers and canals allow for fantastic exploration by boat, foot or bike. Plentiful events and leisure activities, exceptional scenery and an abundance of local food and drink at many river and canal-side pubs. The waterways of Worcestershire’s Vale and Spa are not to be missed.

The River Avon, also known as Shakespeare’s Avon, runs through the beautiful market towns of Evesham and Pershore. A three day ring opened up in 2011 and was the first of its kind for short breaks, it has created valuable links and more opportunities to enjoy the Worcester and Birmingham Canal.

Cyclists and walkers are treated to a rich variety of routes and terrain from the canal banks around Droitwich Spa to the teasing hills of Broadway and Bredon. Well served with cosy country pubs and restaurants, friendly farm shops and cafes all serving exquisite local produce – it truly is a haven for lovers of the outdoors.

Crossed by five well sign-posted National Cycle Network routes, and offering a 40 mile long distance walk and many circular walks, the district includes hundreds of miles of quiet country lanes linking picture postcard villages and set in stunning scenery where hidden architectural and rural treasures can be found.

14

Each town has noticeable pride in its distinctiveness. Why don’t you come and find out all about it? Pershore’s famous historic plums are celebrated in style at their award winning festival. Worcestershire’s Vale and Spa is almost unique in its diversity. The Vale of Evesham is responsible for exceptional produce, but none more famous than the prestigious asparagus that has gained PGI Protected Food name status and joins an elite group of food and drink throughout Europe.

Brine springs beneath Droitwich Spa have existed naturally for millions of years and after almost a century, pure Droitwich Salt is again being produced, re-establishing this valuable resource that once gained the town a Royal Charter.

Visitors with an interest in history will relish the remarkable contribution that this area has to offer, with a plethora of historic houses and heritage sites throughout the district as well as a wealth of churches depicting religious antiquities. Family friendly activities are delivered at many places, designed to inspire budding historians of all ages in fun, educational experiences. www.valeandspa.co.uk

Oldest Mormon Chapel in the World Gadfield Elm Chapel was originally built by the united Brethren in 1836, for the rapidly growing congregation of “Mormons”. Prominent LDS Church leaders preached here, including Brigham Young and Wilford Woodruff, who were later to become the second and fourth Presidents of the Church. Following the emigration to America of the congregation, the chapel fell into ruin. In May 2004 the chapel was given to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Today it is restored to its original simplicity and is the oldest Mormon chapel in the world still standing. www.lds.org.uk/gadfield-elm-chapel

Royal Porcelain Works is a vibrant new cultural development in the heart of historic Worcester. It features arts and crafts, an exhibition and entertainment space, a fabulous new eatery and the world-renowned Museum of Royal Worcester. Located at Worcester's famous Porcelain Works, this exciting new development is a hub of activity and events for members of the local community as well as visitors to Worcester. Originally founded by Robert Chamberlain in Severn Street, the site has been redeveloped by the Bransford Trust to create a new centre for the arts in Worcester - featuring The ‘Henry Sandon’ Hall. The 1852 showroom is at the heart of the development, refurbished to become a 140 seat capacity venue, equipped with the latest audio visual technology. The Hall sits alongside GoodRoots, owned and run by two local friends; Dickie Wheatley a 2 rosette chef and Adam Edney a local designer. GoodRoots’ aspiration is to be an ethical and sustainable cafe sourcing ingredients from local producers to deliver nutritious food for all, strengthening the offer of the site as a destination for both food and arts. www.visitworcestershire.org

It is also home to Piston Distillery; founded in 2018 by Nick Weatherall. In love with the idea of creating his own spirits and fascinated by a trip to a gin school in the summer of 2017, Nick felt compelled to find a flavour he felt the gin world was lacking. Piston offers 14 gin botanicals and was recently awarded Double Gold, Gold, Silver and Bronze medals at the 2019 San Francisco World Spirit Competition. The final phase of the Royal Porcelain Works development will house single spaces and shared collective working spaces for artists, ceramicists, potters, photographers and alike, as well as office space. These facilities, alongside a gallery and a courtyard, are host to an eclectic mix of events; including theatre, cinema, talks, antiques fairs, farmer’s markets and art workshops and exhibitions. So important to the region’s cultural identity, Royal Porcelain Works raises the profile of the fantastic level of artistry and craftsmanship that exists locally, helping ensure these skills remain relevant to future generations and those traditions for which the city of Worcester is renowned live on.
