Worcester is one of the oldest cities in the country, with evidence of settlements here dating back to 700BC. The city was fortified in Saxon times and our history can still be seen in the landscape today, from cobbled Tudor streets to elegant Queen Anne architecture. The street layout hasn’t changed since the Middle Ages; you can visit the remnants of the once majestic city walls and walk the path once trod by Romans. The city is said by some to be the ‘birthplace of democracy’, thanks in part to its function in the creation of the Magna Carta and its roles in the Civil War. Also, Edward Winslow – one of the founding fathers and inspiration for the American constitution – was educated here at the Cathedral.
Amid the city’s hustle and bustle, Worcester has an abundance of beautiful parks, peaceful gardens and green spaces perfect for walking, cycling and picnicking. The Riverside Park winds along the banks of the Severn whilst the Civil War playground at Fort Royal Park (the site of the Battle of Worcester) has some of the best views across the city. Cycling is big news in Worcester and is growing in popularity with hobbyists and serious cyclists alike. The stunning river bridge at Diglis creates an easy circular route or if you prefer more of a challenge, you can be in the heart of the countryside within a few minutes.

American Connections 75TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE D-DAY LANDINGS
US Presidents Visit Worcester City
Worcester is home to the first and final battle in the English Civil War (1642-51), as such the county sparked the curiosity of Thomas Jefferson. In 1786 along with his colleague John Adams, they visited Fort Royal Hill to see the site where ‘liberty was fought for and won. Visit The Commandery and learn about the English Civil War. In 1651, it formed King Charles I headquarters for his troops before the final battle. Find out how the wars shaped England’s politics and the concepts of liberty and democracy. Just two years after Jefferson’s visit, the experience helped draft the US Constitution.

Mayflower 400
A Winslow Changed the World
EDWARD WINSLOW was born in Droitwich Spa, the grandson of a farmer, he won a scholarship and attended Kings School at Worcester Cathedral from 1606 to 1611. At 21, he left England to join the separatists in Leiden, Holland assisting William Brewster in publishing of promotional material and religious books. When the pilgrims arrived in Massachusetts Winslow was the third person to sign the compact showing his status within the colony. Life in the Americas gave Edward opportunities; he performed the marriage ceremonies and was imprisoned for doing so on his return to England. When the Wampanoag chief was seriously ill, Winslow, who had no medical training, nursed him back to health using only chicken soup. He established rights with the natives for fishing and trading posts across a large area of land wider than the current state of Massachusetts.
Until 1875, all bottles of Worcestershire Sauce were produced and bottled in Worcester City before being shipped around the world. In 1875, US demand for Lea & Perrins Worcestershire Sauce was so high it had to be imported in casks and later a franchise agreement was written to allow the US partner to produce and bottle the sauce to the original recipe and process.
Also Edward Winslow famously documented the 3 day Harvest Celebration event Americans now celebrate as Thanksgiving. The UK Mayflower 400th Commemorative year will run from Nov 2019 to Nov 2020 telling the true stories of their fight for religious freedom. We are working directly with the Wampanoag nation to ensure their stories are heard, as well as looking at the modern world where we are still dealing with similar issues. The Almonry, Evesham, was built in the 14th Century as the home of the Almoner, a monk of the Benedictine Abbey. It was the role of the Almoner to provide food, medicine, clothing and sometimes money to the poor of the town. Throughout its lifetime the Almonry has been many things to many people, a rest stop when it was an inn, a social space in its life as a tea shop, a family home until the 1970s and finally a museum and Tourist Information Centre, a place to learn, to relax and enjoy, to discover heritage, culture and indulge in a little nostalgia!

SPETCHLEY PARK GARDENS
Little ones can dress up as a gnome, fairy or pixie (dressing up available) and they may be lucky enough to spot a resident fairy or pixie who loves to help things grow. These tiny folk love nature, especially trees, flowers and herbs. It is believed that for every tree or plant there is a fairy guarding it, helping them to grow.
Spetchley Park Gardens is a garden for all seasons and has been described as one of horticulture’s best-kept secrets. April and May produce a wonderful display of spring bulbs, especially daffodils, as well as flowering trees and shrubs. The large collection of roses, both old-fashioned and modern, come into their own in June and July, whilst July, August and September reveal the great herbaceous borders in all their glory. Finally, late September sees the start of the Autumn tints.
Keep your eyes peeled and spot the many tiny doors in the trees high and low. Look out for fairy gardens in old teapots, wheel barrows, flower pots and even a saucepan. www.whitlenge.co.uk

Meet The Chef FELICE TOCCHINI
Feli’s Bar & Restaurant www.felisrestaurant.com WHAT IS THE REASON YOU BECAME A CHEF? My family owned a bar so catering was always in my blood. At school I was very creative so now I allow my artistic talent to shine in the kitchen. WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST MOMENT? I have lots, but I love teaching and passing on my knowledge to others in our demonstration kitchen, getting my 2 year old grandson to make pasta from scratch though was unforgettable. WHAT IS YOUR SIGNATURE DISH? I love creating new dishes and creating new combinations, I created my oddest dish working with the British sprouts association "Sprouty Cake"!
TIM JENKINS
Brockencote Hall Hotel www.brockencotehall.com WHAT IS THE REASON YOU BECAME A CHEF? I always cooked at home with my parents, after university I retrained and got experience working in local gastro pubs while at college. I started working at Brockencote as a commie chef. WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST MOMENT? Retaining 3 rosettes for the first time, gave me a big confidence boost. WHAT IS YOUR SIGNATURE DISH? I really enjoy coming up with new dishes and flavour combinations, but Broadway Venison with Jerusalem artichoke, sprouts and pickled elderberries keeps coming back during the winter months.
DWIGHT CLAYTON
Hickory’s Smokehouse Worcester www.hickorys.co.uk/worcester WHAT IS THE REASON YOU BECAME A CHEF? I’ve loved learning about cooking and even growing food from a young age; I’m still obsessed with new cultures and their cuisines. The creative side of being a chef is a big driver, a trade where you can use all your senses on a daily basis. WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST MOMENT? I was thrilled to get the job of Head Chef here at Hickory’s, but in my past life as a pastry chef I got to the national finals of Academy Culinaires awards for excellence in patisserie. Such an honour. – I can’t find confirmation of this online. WHAT IS YOUR SIGNATURE DISH? It has to be super-cheesy mac and cheese with lashings of pulled pork, homemade BBQ sauce and a side of my signature slaw. It’s a Hickory’s favourite but also my most requested dish at home. www.visitworcestershire.org
GRAEME DAVIS
The Fox and Hounds Lulslely www.foxandhoundslulsley.com WHAT IS THE REASON YOU BECAME A CHEF? Becoming a chef was a natural transition from a childhood hobby to a career and lifestyle, it’s just always been part of my life. WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST MOMENT? Being a vital cog in our development over the last year has been brilliant. Putting Lulslely on the Worcestershire food map and being recognised for awards is great. WHAT IS YOUR SIGNATURE DISH? Braised Shin of Beef – especially as it’s a true Worcestershire dish, it brings together such a variety of fantastic local Worcestershire ingredients.

Diglis House Hotel
SEVERN STREET, WORCESTER WR1 2NF
T E W £
01905 353518 info@diglishousehotel.co.uk www.diglishousehotel.co.uk From £79 28 rooms
Worcester’s country house hotel with a unique and commanding position on the banks of the River Severn. Stay in one of the 28 bedrooms, with 11 guest rooms in the main house and the other 17 rooms built in the grounds. Accommodation ranges from standard rooms to Junior and Master Suites, with views overlooking the River Severn or our beautiful grounds. Diglis House Hotel is a privately owned and operated hotel in a Grade II listed historic building. The original house pre-dates the 1600s, however it was rebuilt and later extended during Georgian times. It became the home of Edward Leader Williams, the chief engineer to the Severn Navigation Commission, and his family. His son Benjamin Williams Leader was born in the house and was a famous landscape artist and friend of John Constable. The hotel now offers beautiful wide views across to the Malvern Hills, a great location on the banks of the River Severn close to Worcester Cathedral and an amazing wide choice of seasonal food, from the chef’s classics or à la carte dining. Your stay with us includes individually-cooked full English breakfast, free parking, free WiFi, free use of the nearby gym and the choice to dine in style.
