WORCESTER HISTORIC city

WORCESTER’S HISTORIC HEART makes the city an interesting place to visit. The dramatic Worcester Cathedral rises out of the City landscape along the banks of the River Severn, with magnificent views over Worcestershire from the top of the tower. Founded in 680 as a Priory, the Cathedral as we see it today was built in 1084. The Cathedral houses Royal tombs; most notorious is ‘bad’ King John, famed for signing Magna Carta over 800 years ago. Prince

Arthur, Queen Elizabeth I’s cousin is also buried in the Cathedral, as well as three-time Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin; the only Prime Minister to have ever served under three monarchs. Step back in time down Friar Street, with its black and white buildings and cobbled streets. Walk along and discover Tudor House Museum as well as National Trust property Greyfriars House and Gardens. At the bottom of Friar Street you will be able to see Edgar Tower, the last remaining part of the Castle Walls...

The Commandery Museum site formed the army’s Headquarters during the English Civil War. In 2017 it was transformed with new interactive displays to commemorate the first and last battles of the bloody war, bringing to life tales of treason, treachery and tragedy. Cavaliers and Roundheads march through the City’s streets at various English Civil War re-enactment events, including the Living History weekends at Worcester’s Civil War centre. The magnificent Guildhall will certainly catch your eye; The City’s Guildhall is a truly beautiful building which dates back to 1721. It has a fascinating history – it was once the seat of justice throughout the city and even housed a prison – and today offers both visitors and residents a glimpse of Worcester’s rich and varied heritage. Make sure to visit the top floor to fully appreciate the building! Worcester City Art Gallery & Museum near Foregate Street train station has a variety of displays depicting Worcester’s historic past. The art gallery regularly houses exhibitions from national collections, so make sure you check out the event diary to find out what’s on during your visit.

Worcester’s Open Spaces ...offer a variety of experiences, as well as peace away from the city hubbub. Fort Royal Hill and its play area offer superb panorama views of the city and is well worth the walk! It is steeped in history as the site of the 1651 Battle of Worcester, the final battle of the English Civil war which is commemorated with re-enactments and events throughout the year.

Worcester has more independent retailers than most can boast, along with the usual High Street brands, to make a great shopping destination. Close to the High Street, Crowngate shopping centre contains a mix of independent and chain stores in the heart of the city. Crowngate Kitchen offers a relaxed environment for your dining and time out from the hustle and bustle. With a range of top-quality well known restaurants, you’ll be spoilt for choice.

Gheluvelt Park is a memorial park built in honour to those lost in WW1. This is a great place for families with a splash pad, play areas for younger and older children, tennis courts and table tennis. Pop into the Pump House Environment Centre and visit their cafe or during the summer enjoy music from the bandstand.

Enjoy a circular walk along the River Severn, past the Cathedral and historic Cathedral Ferry (weekends during summer) via Diglis House Hotel and the Diglis Canal Basin. Cross the river at the footbridge and make your way back to the city along the tree lined walk with views of the weir and if you’re lucky you might even see Salmon jumping over it on their journey up the river. Along the river you can also see Worcestershire County Cricket Ground as well as Worcester Racecourse and Worcester Arena near the next footbridge across the Severn. The newly opened Cathedral Square provides a wealth of places to eat and drink, with space for entertainment throughout the year including outdoor cinema and performance stages.

The High Street offers all the usual big-hitters in retail including Joules, Jack Wills, Hotel Chocolat and L’Occitane. Take time to wander up this pedestrianised street from Angel Place to Cathedral Square, Worcester’s newest public space with a host of top name restaurants and businesses. Pop into the Tourist Information Centre at the Guildhall for Worcester souvenirs, local produce and information. The cobblestones and black and white buildings of Friar Street and New Street play host to many of Worcester’s independent gems. Charming boutiques nestle alongside excellent restaurants and historic drinking houses. Off New Street you will find Reindeer Court, a charming oasis with independent shops and unique treasures to discover.

MALVERN

HILLS & MORE Standing at over one thousand feet, the Malvern Hills offer 15km of ideal walking conditions, and breath-taking scenery for everyone to enjoy.

The Malvern hills themselves offer around 100 miles of bridleways and footpaths for people to explore while taking in the breath-taking views. A little further afield is the newly revamped Teme Valley Trail, which offers the chance to experience this beautiful part of the district via a series of walking and cycling routes, aimed at people of all ages and abilities. Other cycling routes are also available covering less popular routes around the district, ideal for those wanting to discover something new. If you prefer to take in the amazing scenery on foot then there are also

several walks available to download either via www.visitthemalverns.org or the Malverns Walks app. If you want to learn while you walk, then the Great Malvern Route to the Hills is a new history and heritage trial that will take you on a tour of the town from the railway station to the hills, offering fascinating facts and stories of Malvern’s past as you go. You can also explore the area by car. The Teme Valley Trail offers a scenic leisure drive while the Elgar Trail will take you on a trip around the many places linked to the life of the composer - and the district’s most famous son – Sir Edward Elgar.

The life of Elgar is just waiting to be discovered at his birthplace The Firs at Lower Broadheath, now run by The National Trust. The organisation also looks after Croome Court, just a short distance from Upton, with its stunning grounds created by famous landscape designer Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown.

The belief Malvern’s springs had therapeutic properties brought numerous famous people to the town including Florence Nightingale. You can find out more about this by visiting Malvern Museum.

Tenbury Wells is the Capital of English Mistletoe. It annually celebrates its unique heritage by holding a Mistletoe Festival on the first Saturday in December. The day begins with the crowning of the Mistletoe Queen and later in the day there will be a Druids Thanksgiving Ceremony where all are welcome and a Santa Parade through the town.

There are so many ways to enjoy leisure time in The Malverns. Take in the district’s picturesque countryside while cruising down the Severn in Upton on the Conway Castle, with three upper decks allowing for magnificent panoramic views. Malvern Theatres has a packed programme ranging from touring shows straight out of the West End to top quality drama. Or why not pay a visit to Tenbury’s art deco cinema The Regal, with its mixture of live shows and film screenings? If you are a petrol head then make sure you pay a visit to Shelsley Walsh, the world’s oldest operational motorsport

Upton was the scene of a pivotal battle in the English Civil War, the loss of which led to the eventual defeat of King Charles II. The royalists held out in an ancient church, part of which still stands in the form of the recently revamped Pepperpot. Today it is home to the town’s Tourist Information and Heritage Centre. The gas lamps of Great Malvern are thought to have provided the inspiration to CS Lewis for the Chronicles of Narnia series. Come and take a selfie in front of one and imagine meeting Mr Tumnus in the land where it is always winter but never Christmas.

Malvern has been at the forefront of scientific innovation for six decades. The term boffin is credited to ‘a band of scientific men who performed wartime wonders at Malvern’ and used to call themselves ‘the boffins’.

The development of key elements of an air to surface radar for airborne use was crucial in helping Britain contain the menace of German U-Boats. The creation of ipads, PCs and mobile phones was made possible because of the electronic integrated circuit, the concept of which was first developed in Malvern in 1952. High resolution x-ray detector crystals were invented in the town in 1983 enabling the development of body and brain scanners

worcestershire’s vale & spa Brine Springs have naturally existed beneath Droitwich Spa for millions of years with the production of salt in Droitwich existing for well over 2000 years. For the first time in 95 years salt is once again produced in Droitwich. The town offers the finest salt sourced from one of the oldest and purest brine springs in the world.

The historic ‘salt’ town of Droitwich Spa offers plenty for visitors to see and enjoy. Blending old and new the town is a place of great charm and character. It owes its existence to natural brine springs, which emanate from subterranean beds of pure rock salt 200ft below the ground. Dissolved by underground springs, artesian pressure forces the salt to the surface as brine, where its density and buoyancy are only rivalled by the Dead Sea. In 2017 for the first time in almost 100 years pure salt has been mined and is now on sale in and around the town Droitwich Spa has an assortment of leisure activities including guided walks, an open air lido and two well maintained Green Flag parks. The restored Droitwich canal network is a haven for walkers, cyclists and nature lovers. There are enough shops and eating places to keep visitors happy along with numerous festivals and markets that take place throughout the year. Popular events include St Richards Canal Festival in May, the Droitwich Food and Drink Festival in June and Salt Fest in September.

A delightful riverside town which saw one of the most iconic battles in England take place on 4th August 1265 when Simon de Montfort, the 6th Earl of Leicester was brutally slain. Today Evesham is a thriving market town renowned for its shopping and leisure activities which includes award winning Festivals celebrating the Vales attributes; especially its Asparagus, which now also boasts the kudos of being awarded European Protected Food Name status. The towns’ historical and horticultural heritage is charmingly displayed in the Almonry Heritage Centre which is also the Tourist Information Centre. The surrounding area known as The Vale of Evesham is celebrated for its walking and cycling opportunities – especially around the world famous Blossom Trail, an AA signed route that provides sensational and breath taking views as well as providing a wonderful day out around some of the areas most picturesque villages.

Situated on the banks of the River Avon is the idyllic town of Pershore, famous for its beautiful 13th Century Norman Abbey that sits in the award winning Abbey Parklands, the town combines history with tranquillity, but provides the modern amenities necessary for an enjoyable visit. Pershore High Street boasts a number of independent shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants, providing visitors with the perfect day out to browse for that special something and then savour some tasteful locally obtained food, wines, ales and ciders. With the additional shopping provision of the indoor Retail Market, come rain or shine, you will have access to quality local produce and beautiful unique items. Next to the River Avon, which runs through Pershore and only a 5 minutes walk from the town centre, is the award winning Avon Meadow Wetlands. Originally water meadows, a series of flooded scrapes have been created as a haven for wildlife. There are numerous footpaths in the area and a boardwalk runs through the middle of the wetland so that you can get up close to the wildlife. Pershore offers a number of quality events throughout the year. There are many flower shows, open gardens, fêtes and village walkabouts around the local area as well as Pershore’s Carnival, Midsummer Brass, Jazz Festival and multi-award winning Plum Festival .

Broadway lies at the entrance to the Vale of Evesham at the foot of the Cotswolds. The combination of natural and built environment combine to create a village that is full of historic character and charm whilst also being a modern, vibrant village with activities and attractions for visitors and residents alike. Standing tall above the village on Fish Hill is Broadway Tower, one of England’s outstanding viewpoints and at 1024 feet (312m) above sea level it is the second highest point of the Cotswolds. In the village itself, the honey coloured stone contrasts with the Village Green to provide perfect photo opportunities. The Cotswold craft heritage is kept alive through the Gordon Russell Design Museum, and the Broadway Museum brings an international reputation. The art heritage of John Singer Sargent and the Broadway Colony is reflected in many galleries that also include a more contemporary offer. With several events throughout the year including a horticultural show, food festival and the long established late night shopping at Christmas, Broadway always has something to offer everyone.

NORTH Worcestershire Plan your visit to the north Worcestershire towns of Kidderminster, Bewdley, Stourport on Severn, Bromsgrove and Redditch, online at www.visitworcestershire.org, access walking maps at www.worcestershire.gov.uk or visit in person at Redditch and Bewdley Tourist Information Centres.

Stourport STOURPORT ON SEVERN is a long way from the sea, but has the atmosphere of a true maritime holiday resort. Not surprisingly people from all over the region have been coming here for many years for a fun day out. This Georgian canal ‘Fairtrade’ Town in the heart of the Severn Valley, is well worth a visit, head for the riverside and the meadows, where you will find a number of fun activities for the whole family, including boats to hire, a modern and exciting children’s play area, river cruises with the Stourport Steamer Co, crazy golf, a putting green, go-kart’s, a paddling pool, plus many amusements. Just the other side of the bridge you will find the Treasure Island Amusement Centre – with fairground rides, the dragon roller coaster, dodgems and a large arcade. Whilst there, take a moment to stroll round the interesting and historic locks and canal basins.

Severn Valley Railway

There are many places of interest within walking distance from one another. In Kidderminster you can find winners of the Worcestershire Real Ale CAMRA award for 2017, The Weavers Real Ale House, the national Museum of Carpet honouring 300 years of history of carpet making, as well as the Victorian Grade II listed Town Hall and Severn Valley Railway, the major heritage national steam railway.

Home to West Midland Safari and Leisure Park The park is home to some of the world’s most beautiful and endangered animals; including white lions, tigers, giraffes, rhinoceroses, cheetahs, hippopotami, and meerkats, as well as the largest lemur walk-through exhibit. The Park also houses the UK’s largest animatronic dinosaur attraction along with Adventure Theme Park also incorporating TV’s Boj’s Giggly Park.

Live music, theatre and art

Look out for Heritage Open Days each year when you could get the chance to go backstage at a variety of venues such as The Rose Theatre, Kidderminster, Kidderminster Town Hall, Harvington Hall and the Redditch Palace Theatre. Other venues for live entertainment include Stourport Civic Centre, Artrix in Bromsgrove and Jinney Ring just outside Bromsgrove. Recent improvements to the landscaping of KIDDERMINSTER TOWN CENTRE has seen a themed design for the street furniture and public art based on the town’s ‘Rock Music’ heritage including stacks of vinyl records and two long benches in the shape of guitar necks. A fitting tribute to the once famous Frank Freeman’s Dance Club where the DJ John Peel promoted, amongst others, the late Marc Bolan’s 60’s/70’s band T. Rex. The public square, Exchange Place, has been redesigned around the form of the ‘Penny Black’ postage stamp to celebrate Roland Hill, a local Kidderminster philanthropist, who founded the modern postal system and whose statue stands tall in the centre of the space.

There are plenty of historical sites to be enjoyed, such as the County Museum housed at Hartlebury Castle (1,000 years of history including a fine library compiled by Bishop Richard Hurd), Harvington Hall (Moated Manor House) and Hagley Hall (iconic stately home) so it’s well worth a visit. The WORCESTERSHIRE COUNTY MUSEUM, near both Kidderminster and Stourport, is housed in historic Hartlebury Castle. Whether you are looking for a chance to learn about everything from Romans to Regency, a peaceful stroll through nature or just a nice cup of tea and a cake, the Museum offers plenty for a day out.

AVONCROFT OPEN AIR MUSEUM cares for a collection of several thousand objects that reflect the life and work that took place within these historic buildings and structures. The Ring: Art on the Waterways February – September 2018 www.theringart.org.uk 2018 will see a major new arts project, The Ring, bring imaginative and unexpected artworks to the waterways of Worcestershire. Five artists have been commissioned by the Canal & River Trust project to produce works inspired by the Mid-Worcestershire Ring, a 21-mile circle of natural and historic waterways, flowing through the urban and rural landscapes of Worcester and Droitwich Spa. There will be lots to do for visitors at pop-up art events, including an unusual artwork that gradually ‘appears’ at Diglis Island; poetry and photography; a project inspired by Droitwich Spa’s history of salt production; a bandstand like nothing you’ve seen before; spectacularly inventive street art; special performances; live events and activities.

New for 2018 Hartlebury Castle opens as major visitor attraction Home to the Bishops of Worcester for over 1000 years, Hartlebury Castle opens as a major visitor attraction in April, showcasing its unique history. Already home to Worcestershire County Museum, from April the whole site will be open, offering visitors the chance to discover the lives of its residents through exciting and interactive galleries. You can also tour the grand State Rooms and for the first time enjoy a walk around the grounds and gardens, before relaxing in the Castle’s new café. In the Worcestershire County Museum galleries, visitors can explore the County’s fascinating history through museum collections including an outstanding collection of Gypsy wagons, the costume collection, Victorian School Room and popular toy gallery.

The Museum benefited from an excellent relationship with Royal Worcester and the Company frequently gifted copies and special trial pieces, pattern books, film and records to the collection. From Summer 2018 following a new National Lottery Funded refurbishment these artefacts will be on display in new interpretations focusing on the human story of Royal Worcester’s workforce, the conditions in which they worked, their camaraderie, the magnificent pieces of porcelain they created, their manufacture and the many famous people who placed orders with Royal Worcester throughout the world and their 257-year history.

July 5th 1948 became the ‘Appointed Day’ marking the beginning of the UK’s National Health Service. Worcester’s medical museums, The Infirmary and George Marshall Medical Museum, tell the story of how medicine and healthcare have changed since Worcester became the birthplace of the British Medical Association in 1832. To celebrate the 60th anniversary they will be running a programme of research and temporary displays, as well as hosting talks and events for this milestone. The Infirmary and George Marshall Medical Museum offer exhibitions, events and provide tours and talks to local community groups on the history of medical care in Worcestershire since 1745. Hanbury Hall Nestled in the heart of the Worcestershire countryside, Hanbury was a perfect summer retreat from the bustle of 18th Century London life. Thomas Vernon, a rich and successful lawyer, built Hanbury Hall as a setting for lavish parties and the whole estate was designed to showcase his wealth, taste and style. Artist Sir James Thornhill was employed to create spectacular wall and ceiling paintings, depicting the story of Achilles with a contemporary political twist. Without these paintings, Hanbury Hall would not be here today; their importance inspired an anonymous donation so that in 1953, Hanbury was saved for future generations.
