n Pierre le Roux se artikel “Stille Waters” wat elders in hierdie uitgawe verskyn, maak hy die opmerking: “‘n Mens leer elke keer iets nuuts en soms word jy met iets baie besonders beloon. Jy weet nooit wat in die stille waters van diepe grond rondswem nie en jou siel word elke keer by die water gevoed. Al land jy nie elke vis nie, word dit deel van die opwinding, senuwees en uitdaging wat ‘n hengelaar so verslaaf aan visvang maak.” Dit het my laat dink: Is hengel werklik verslawend – soos wat dobbel verslawend kan wees? Feit is... die hele tyd wat jy nie ‘n vis gevang gekry nie, bou die afwagting binne jou op. Dit bou so binne jou op, dat wanneer jy wel die vis haak, jy soms so oorweldig word deur die oomblik dat daar behoorlik VisKoors uitbreek. Jy kan nie glo dat hy uiteindelik gebyt het nie, jy wonder of jy hom veilig gaan uitbring tot op die kant, om nie te praat hoe jy wonder oor sy grootte nie. Jou hele lyf speel saam in opgewondenheid... jy steier omtrent oor jou eie voete om die vis tog net nie te laat wegkom nie! Na jy die vis geland het, hou jy aan hengel met die hoop om weer daardie genotlike ervaring te beleef. Probeer weer... en weer... En al vang jy niks, bly dit steeds ‘n uitdaging en bly die hoop steeds daar; en as jy hom vang, is dit die heerlikste gevoel van vervulling ooit. Hengel is vir my verslawend om verskeie redes: Dit gee vrede en gemoedsrus weg van die gewone lewe af. Die opwinding van die vis wat byt en pluk aan die aas, die opwinding wat wag aan die einde van die lyn en nie te weet wat daar op jou wag nie. Ai man, dis die vreugdevolle dinge in die lewe wat geld nie kan koop nie! Daar is niks beter vir jou probleme en stresvlakke as ‘n bietjie tyd afknyp vir ‘n terapeutiese hengelsessie nie! Matigheid voor oë!

Daan Spamer van Wellington het hierdie 15kg baber in Oktober in die Choberivier by Kasane in die Caprivistrook gevang. Die was sy eerste varswatervis ooit. Hy erken dat hy nie juis ‘n visserman is nie maar het al ‘n paar stompneuse by Langebaan JHYDQJ +\ KHW µQ NRI¿HPHXO NDWURO met 10kg breekkrag gebruik. Hy het eers gedink hy sit vas en toe met groot moeite die vis uitgebring. Hy het eintlik gaan tiervis vang en sal volgende keer maar weer probeer.

Dit was nie die grootte vis waarvoor ons gehoop het nie, maar groot genoeg geveg beleef. Volgens die grondeienaar is die gemiddelde grootte karp wat hier gevang word, nie kleiner as 12kg nie en dit is presies waarvoor ons hier was. Ek en Blikkies is in ‘n stryd om te kyk wie eerste 10kg kan breek, maar om sulke vis op die wal te kry, vereis goeie spanwerk. Dit was nie die grootte vis waarvoor ons gehoop het nie, maar om jou vakansie met ‘n 7.5kg karp af te skop, is glad nie te versmaai nie. Daarna was dit my beurt. My nuwe alarmstelletjie se liggie het skielik opgehelder en soos ‘n kat wat se stert vasgetrap word, begin skree. Hierdie vis was moedswillig en wou nie vinnig tou opgooi nie. My senuwees was gedaan. Dit is ook die vinnigste wat ‘n vis daai glimlag van jou bakkies afklap met sy kolossale spartelende stert. Ek

Dit is dalk vir party hengelaars nog ‘n opgeblaasde storie, maar dit bly jou verantwoordelikheid om ons vis te bewaar! Die volgende dag het die hittegloed ‘n klein bietjie bedaar en die wind het in die regte rigting geswaai. Ek het my baberstokke uitgetrek en was teleurgesteld dat daar nie eens ‘n roering deur die nag was nie. Blikkies het nog ‘n klein onderbek uitgetrek. Ek was vasberade om nie moed te verloor nie. Terwyl ek oor die rivier geroei het om die vars viskop in te vat, kon ek nie glo dat hierdie water wat groot babers huisves, niks oplewer nie. Ek het teruggekeer en Blikkies se lyne ook ingeroei. Hy was beloon met nog ‘n pragtige karpie en solank die stokke aangehou buig het, was ons tevrede. Toe kraak daar ‘n katrol wat bo die res uitstaan. Die baberstok het sy eerste teken van hoop gegee. Ons weet dat jy ‘n baber moet kans gee, maar die katrol het opgehou rol en ons opgewondenheid was van korte duur. Daar het ‘n paar minute verloop toe ons weer ‘n pluk aan die baberstok hoor, maar net soos die vorige keer wou hy net nie ordentlik vat nie. Dit was die

Ons het ‘n stryd gehad om hierdie karpe buite die water vas te hou eienaardigste byt wat ek van ‘n baber ervaar het. Toe ek sien dat dit nie die vis aan Blikkies se lyn was wat oor myne geswem het nie, het ek besluit om in te katrol. Na ‘n paar draaie kon ek weerstand voel. Dit is gewoonlik wat gebeur. Die baber tel jou aas op en trek jou lyn tussen die klippe in sodat jy vashaak. Ek wou amper gereed maak om in die kanoe te klim sodat ek my lyn kan gaan losmaak, toe ek voel dat die weerstand vrylik teen my stok veg. “Hier

is iets aan my lyn!” het ek verblydend geskree. Blikkies het die vis wat hy sopas geland het, weer vrygelaat en die skepnet dadelik reg gehou. Ek dink hy was nog in ongeloof oor die vis aan my lyn, maar ek het geweet dat hier iets was wat baie vreemd baklei. My lyn was heeltemal teen die stoom af en gladnie in die rigting waar ek my aas neergesit het nie. Ek kon sien dat die vis baie nader aan die kant was en het besluit om nog ‘n paar meter in te katrol. Toe die water breek en ek iets kon sien, was my eerste woorde aan Blikkies, “Dis nie ‘n baber nie!” Dit kon net een iets anders wees... Die vinne van ‘n inheemse goue bek het my in vervoering laat staan. “Dis ‘n grootbekgeelvis” het ek met ‘n bewerige stem JHÀXLVWHU Skielik het die hele dinamiek van ons benadering verander. Die vis was

doodmoeg en het op sy kant begin draai voordat Blikkies die skepnet versigtig onder die silwer lyf kon insteek. Daar was ‘n oomblik van passiewe stilte terwyl ons na mekaar in ongeloof gekyk het. Ons moes die vis dadelik weer in dieper water kry. Blikkies het ‘n ordentlike weegnet met ritssluiters aan beide kante. Ek moes seker maak dat die vis regop in die net bly terwyl ek dit laat herleef het. Na ‘n paar minute het die vis weer lewe gekry en ek kon hom uit die net lig waar Blikkies reg gestaan het met die kamera. Na ‘n paar fotos moes ek weer met die vis in die water gaan. Blikkies het die weegskaal reg gestel en ons was angstig om te sien hoeveel hy weeg. Die skaal het tot op ‘n stewige 7kg getrek en ons het besef dat dit ‘n vangs van ‘n leeftyd is. Oewerhengel het begin insink. ‘n Grootbek-geelvis is na vyf jaar maar ‘n skrale 300mm lank en vat tot sewe jaar voordat hulle vrugbaar is. Grootbek-geelvis word die grootste Suid-Afrikaanse varswater, geskubde vis en die SA-rekord staan tans op 22,2kg. Dit is ondenkbaar hoe groot so vis kan word! Die grootbek-geelvis, anders as sy kleiner eweknie, die kleinbek- geelvis, is hoog op die lys van bedreigde spesies. Besoedeling, asook damwalle wat die vis se migrasieroetttes blokkeer, het die grootbek-geelvis se getalle drasties laat afneem. In my agterkop het ek besef dat as gevolg van die babers wat so traag is, kon die aas langer lê, en dit het die geelvis kans gegee om dit op te tel. Gewoonlik vang hengelaars in damme soos Grootdraai- en Vaaldam soortgelyke geles op viskop of krap, maar hier in sy mees natuurlikste habitat is die vlieghengelaars meer suksesvol om sulke droomvis aan te keer. Ek het elke oomblik saam met die vis in die water gekoester. Ek was nog altyd bang vir diep water, maar in die vis se teenwoordigheid het ek ‘n sin van vrede ervaar. Ek wou nie die vis dadelik laat gaan nie, maar hy was reg om terug te keer na die veilige dieptes van die rivier. Ek het my kop onder die water laat sak en gekyk hoe hy grasieus sy stertvin swaai, asof hy vir my waai en totsiens sê. Dit was ‘n oomblik wat ek altyd sal onthou en ‘n ervaring

wat moeilik is om met woorde te beskryf. Ek het stadig uit die water geloop en met Blikkies die oomblik gedeel. Blikkies was bekommerd of die vis sal oorleef en terwyl ek hom probeer gerusstel, kon ek sien hy kyk vir iets agter my. Met ‘n skok het ons ‘n vis in die verte sien dryf. Ek het dadelik in die bootjie gespring en oorgeroei. Ons kon nie toelaat dat hierdie geelvis vrek nie en my hart het amper gaan staan! Tot my verligting kon ek sien dat dit nie ons vis was nie. Dit was ‘n karp wat al ‘n ruk lank dood was. Dit was opvallend hoeveel dooie vis in die omgewing was en ons kon nie die oorsaak verklaar nie. Ons het vir lank daarna die water dopgehou om seker te maak ons geelvis begin nie ook iewers dryf nie. Ons het die res van die middag gebruik om reg te maak vir die laaste nag se hengel. Daar was nog ‘n mylpaal om te behaal en ons het geweet dat die karp teen skemer sal begin byt. Dit was al donker voordat die eerste stok begin hardloop het. Ek het nog nie so aggressiewe lopie gesien nie... en dit is wanneer jy net vasmaak en die vis laat loop. Ek kon die vis nie gedraai kry nie en ek was seker dat hierdie my rekord grootte vis was. Daar is niks meer terleurstellend as om skielik te voel hoe jou lyn slap word nie. Hy het my lyn gebreek en ek wou myself skop! Teen die helling waarteen

my lyn in die water ingetrek was, kon ek die diepte van die kuil skat. Daar moet ‘n rif wees waarteen die lyn skuur, maar ek het ook vroeër ‘n dom fout gemaak. Altwee my stokke se lyne het vroeër die dag vasgehaak en uit frustrasie het ek ongeduldig met die stokke teen die wal opgeloop om die lyn te breek. Dit het my duur te staan gekom. Jy rek en verswak jou lyn om dit op so manier af te breek. As daar geen ander opsie is nie, moet jy die gedeelte wat in die water was verwyder en met vars lyn van die spoel af verder hengel. Ek het nog ‘n kans verbrou toe daar weer ‘n sneltrein my ander stok se lyn breek. Ek kon dit nie glo nie en die geluk wat ek vroeër die dag gehad het, was oorskadu met twee visse na mekaar wat weggekom het! Ek en Blikkies het dalk nie ons PB’s verbeter nie, maar dit was ‘n onvergeetlike ervaring. ‘n Mens leer elke keer iets nuuts en soms word jy met iets baie besonders beloon. Jy weet nooit wat in die stille waters van diepe grond rondswem nie en jou siel word elke keer by die water gevoed. Al land jy nie elke vis nie, word dit deel van die opwinding, senuwees en uitdaging wat ‘n hengelaar so verslaaf aan visvang maak. Die voorreg om in ongerepte waters te hengel is prysloos en dit is verblydend om te sien dat die Vaalrivier nog gesonde vis het!

Around every corner there was an adventure to be conquered, and many had the opportunity to face obstacles and excitement that they have never previously been exposed to, and which will help to build character and shape an attitude for life. campers had to face their fear of height during the abseiling and zip line, but luckily for them the adrenalin rush almost completely wiped out these fears. The aim was to encourage all to participate, to try their best, and to reach their own personal potential. The obstacle course was another activity that challenged many and emphasized the importance of attitude towards life’s obstacles. It did not matter how each crossed the obstacles, but rather whether they crossed it. In life, there are two types of people‌ those who give up and who are not even willing to try to reach the top, and then those who succeed even if it means setting their pride aside and allowing others to help them reach the top. That being kept in mind, each camper made his/her way across the obstacle course and then ran back to the camp site to enjoy their prize‌ a very cool and satisfying swim in the large swimming pool, called the dam.
