ou die dag lees ek dié hartseer opskrif in die dag se nuusgebeure: “Ouderling Wreed Vermoor op Hengeluitstappie - Polokwane” en ‘n paar dae later die volgende hartseer berig: “Man Langs Viswaters Vermoor - Oosrand”. Hierdie twee moorde was albei in 2016 gepleeg…

Hengel was vir baie jare as een van die veiligste sportsoorte geag, maar daardie prentjie het ongelukkig drasties verander in Suid-Afrika. Talle hengelaars word aangeval en beroof terwyl hulle niksvermoedend langs die water sit en hengel en probeer om van die alledaagse “Rat Race” bestaan af weg te kom en ‘n rustige en vredevolle dag langs die water te geniet. Hengel veskaf baie plesier en genot – dit is terapeuties vir die gees en is baie keer die plek waar jy jouself kan vind, waar jy ons God se skeppingswerk kan waardeer en waar pa’s en ma’s hulle kinders leer en hulle bande as gesin versterk. Ongelukkig het jy as hengelaar ‘n sagte teiken vir kriminele geword, en niemand kan sê dat hy of sy nooit ‘n slagoffer van ‘n rooftog of selfs moord, verkragting of enige ander vorm van geweld sal word nie. Die grootste vraag is; wat kan ons as hengelaars doen om ons eie veiligheid te verseker? Lees gerus Jolene van Greunen se artikel “Veiligheid op Hengelwaters” op bladsy 42. Hier is nog ‘n paar wenke oor hoe om dit veiliger vir jouself en jou gesin te maak sodat jy steeds jou gunsteling sport of ontspanning kan geniet: Probeer om in ‘n groep te gaan hengel, of soos Jolene se artikel sê, hengel naby ander mense sodat jy nie alleen is nie. Wees altyd breinwakker en sorg dat jy weet wat om jou aangaan; byvoorbeeld, wees bedag daarop om niks waardevol soos selfone, tablette of beursies onnodig te laat rondlê nie. Sou jy tog, ondanks die voorsorgmaatreëls wat jy getref het, die slagoffer van misdaad word, net die volgende wenke: As aanvallers jou konfronteer, bly kalm en moenie jou verset nie - speel eerder saam en gee hulle wat hulle vra. Aggressie word amper sonder uitsondering met aggressie beantwoord, en jou aanvaller sal heel waarskynlik ‘n wapen hê. Daar is ‘n gesegde wat lui: Eerder BangJan as DooieJan... Op die ou end is jou lewe meer kosbaar as enige iets anders. How to cast far the right way Most often at syndicate dams and in WKH FRPSHWLWLYH ¿VKLQJ DUHQD \RX ZLOO

Bank Angling need to be able to cast further on the odd occasion when it is required. <RX VKRXOG EH DEOH WR ¿VK HIIHFWLYHO\ and safely at 90 metres and more. It is important to remember that your arms govern how effectively you cast. You should not be breaking a sweat to get your bait out and yelping like you are throwing a discus in an athletics meet. If this is the case then the rod isn’t being worked properly, the effort is coming from you. The action should be smooth and quick.

The right stance Your left arm gripping the butt of the rod should be straight and extended, the right arm bent at the elbow so the reel is directly above your head.

The right steps for more accurate casting 1. Casting stance is an important facet of your carp arsenal. Put your weight on your rear leg, and point your front foot in the direction you want the bait to land. 2. Lean your body weight directly over your back leg, and keep the rod above

Shift your body weight forwards on to the front foot and, at the same time, push your right hand directly upwards and pull the butt grip into your chest and collar bone. Keep looking high rather than at the water. The further and harder you’re casting the more extreme the forces on the hook length and bait which means increased chances of a tangle. Always use a snap swivel to connect baits. Remember shorter links and a smaller mielie bomb also cast further. Always make sure that your bomb can spin around and is the shape of an egg. This will help u cast further. Resist the urge to take out line from the spool as you would normally, just let the rig go so you don’t cost yourself distance, only trapping the line as the lead hits water so you can feel the drop of the lead as it touches down. Remember that there should be a much bigger bow in the line, especially with any wind. It can take several minutes but the line needs to be sunk at the rod tip and the bow teased from the line

Hoe werk ‘n gooistok? Die aksie wanneer jy ‘n gooistok gebruik is dieselfde as wanneer jy met ‘n stok gooi of kleilat speel. Die aas word binne in die buis geplaas en dan met ‘n vee-aksie vorentoe gegooi sodat die aas uit die buis skiet. Hierdie aksie neem ‘n bietjie oefening om te bemeester. Aan die begin mag die aas by jou voete beland óf selfs reg in die lug in opskiet, maar wanneer 10 Viskoors | March 2016

jy hierdie aksie bemeester het, sal jy verbaas wees oor die konstante akkuraatheid en afstande wat jy sal kan bereik.

Watter gooistok is die regte een vir jou? Daar is ‘n verskeidenheid gooistokke beskikbaar, gemaak van plastiek, aluminium, koolstof of veselglas. Hierdie stokke kom ook voor in verskeie groottes, ideaal vir die gebruik van verskillende grootte lok-ase. Oorspronklik, so 15 jaar gelede, toe die eerste gooistokke gemaak is, was net aluminium gebruik, maar hierdie materiaal is baie swaar en moeilik om te gebruik. Alhoewel die aluminium gooistokke nogsteeds genoeg krag kan genereer om ver te kan gooi, verg hulle baie meer moeite om te gebruik en sal dus jou arm baie gouer lam en seer laat.

Oewerhengel Veselglas is baie ligter as aluminium, maar is moeiliker om in die regte vorms te giet. Dit het dus die ontwerp van die gooistokke tot hul limiet gebring. Daar is nogsteeds veselglas gooistokke beskikbaar, maar hulle breek baie maklik en is deur die jare vervang met beter materiale. Koolstof is ‘n baie goeie materiaal vir die maak van gooistokke omrede dit baie lig is, maar die nadeel aan koolstof gooistokke is dat dit baie duur is. Koolstof is ook aansienlik meer breekbaar en moeiliker om in ‘n kurwe te vorm. Dit kan wel gedoen word, maar verhoog sodoende ook die prys van die stok. Wat is die antwoord dan? Die enigste beperking tot hoe ver jy jou boilie kan gooi, is die boilie se gewig. Hoe swaarder die boilie, hoe verder sal dit gegooi kan word. Om die absolute maksimum afstand te verkry, kan jy digter bestandele in kleiner hoeveelhede (soos kalkmeel)

in jou boilies sit. Dit is ook moontlik om meer as een tipe aas op een slag te werp, maar maak eers seker jy is gemaklik daarmee om eers enkele ase op ‘n slag te werp voor jy hierdie tegniek probeer. The optimum temperature for feeding ranges from 22 to 30°C (Research done by A. Blignault) From past experience I have established that carps move in schools and feed in intervals, where a specie like the grass carp would feed independently throughout the day on different depths. Despite the optimum water temperature of around 22 to 30°C. I’ve also noticed WKDW JUDVV FDUS DV ZHOO DV WKH PXG¿VK feed comfortably in allot colder temperature. The above mentioned is all good and well, but how does this affect you as an

angler? It’s important for you to analyse the weather temperatures as this has an enormous effect on the feeding behaviour RI ¿VK :DWHU WHPSHUDWXUHV ZRXOG KHOS you determine how deep you would need WR ¿VK RQ WKH GD\ Great example would be: :HDWKHU WHPSHUDWXUHV VWD\ FRQVLVWHQW from Monday to Friday ranging from 28 to 30°C - I would then expect that the ¿VK ZRXOG EH RQ WKH QRUPDO VKDOORZHU distance and feeding quite actively. However, if the temperature had to drop from 28 to 18°C this would have D VLJQL¿FDQW LPSDFW RQ WKH IHHGLQJ EHKDYLRXU RI WKH ¿VK DQG ZH ZRXOG ¿QG them moving a little deeper and feeding allot slower. I know this information overload. Carp Zwolle >> Anthony Hawkswell* After 22 years of running the Carp Zwolle show, Mick Paine thought he would never see the day when he didn’t get at least one complaint. It goes with the territory, he says. But that’s just what happened this year when what is billed as Europe’s largest carp show – extended to three days for WKH ÂżUVW WLPH Âą WRRN SODFH DW ,MVVHOKDOOHQ Zwolle in the Netherlands. “It was absolutely brilliant. In die vroeë 1980‘s was die eerste P.V.A. produk ontwerp HQ EHNHQGJHVWHO HQ VSHVL¿HN RQWZLNNHO YLU VSHVLHNDUSKHQJHO (P.V.A. is die afkorting vir Poly Vinyl Alcohol.) Hierdie produk het sy ontstaan by seehengelaars wat gebruik gemaak het van P.V.A. kleefband om knope aan haarstroppe te voorkom tydens werping van aas. Een van vele voordele vir die gebruik van P.V.A., is die breekkrag daarvan, asook die vermoë om heeltemal te kan oplos wannneer dit in kontak kom met water. Die sakke is wateroplosbaar en kan gebruik word om lokmiddels soos hempsaadolie vry te stel, aangesien olie-basis vloeistowwe soos hempsaadolie die sakke nie sal laat oplos nie. P.V.A.-lyn kan gebruik word om ‘n string boilies aanmekaar te bind om ‘n voer-area te skep wat die hoekaas versteek. Met van my hengelsessies maak ek gereeld gebruik van hierdie P.V.A.-metodes, veral by waters met hoĂŤ hengeldruk, asook by kleiner damme waarby ek vinnige sessies van 12 tot 48 uur aanpak. Ek maak gebruik van verskeie lokmiddels soos fyn grondboontjies asook gekookte en gedroogte hempsaad wat olieryk is, asook boilies wat hoog is in proteĂŻne en hoĂŤ voedingswaarde het. Ek gebruik aas met hoĂŤ aantrekkingswaarde, geure en bymiddels wat kleur afgee om vis in my area te lok. Meeste van my vangstes en verbeterde byttempos was weens P.V.A-metodes wat gebruik is. Stel dus nuwe hengeltegnieke en -metodes op die proef. Hoe seker is jy dat ‘n “ready reader” geskik is vir jou oë?

Goedkoop brille se lense is voor die voet dieselfde. Vra gerus jou oogkundige volgende keer of jou voorskrif hoegenaamd soos die van ‘n goedkoop bril is en of jy in krisistyd dit tog kan gebruik.

Goedkoop koop is duur koop Die sonbril by die verkeerslig skyn dan so ‘n reuse winskoop te wees. Behalwe dat jy dalk onwetend ‘n krimineel ondersteun deur ‘n afsetgebied vir gesteelde goedere te wees, is dit eintlik bloot net swak gehalte brille. Die goedkoop namaaksels sal jou ook heel waarskynlik hoofpyn gee en sommiges kan jou selfs dubbelvisie gee. UV-beskerming is op almal se lippe en dit is geen uitsondering as dit by jou oë kom nie. Brillense het nie die natuurlike vermoë om UV-beskerming te bied nie. Lense moet VSHVL¿HN EHKDQGHO ZRUG RP EHWHU 89 EHVNHUPLQJ WH ELHG 'LH groot gevaar is dus dat wanneer jy ‘n donkerbril opsit, vergroot jou pupille. ‘n Swak gehalte lens laat dus al die skadelike UVstrale deur. Deur so ‘n produk te dra, doen jy as’t ware meer kwaad as om gewoonweg sonder ‘n sonbril te bly. Maak dus seker dat wanneer jy ‘n donkerbril koop dat die lense behandel is met ‘n UV400-laag, of ten minste aan die UV400-standaarde voldoen. Jy sal op jou oudag bly wees dat jy reeds vroeg jou oë begin beskerm het. Hengelaars is veral uitgelewer aan skadelike UV-strale wat van die water se oppervlakte af weerkaats. Vir hengelaars is gepolariseerde lense ‘n luukse moet-hê, aangesien dit weerkaatsing (glare) verminder bo en behalwe die feit dat dit UV-beskermend is. Moet nooit jou donkerbril aankope haastig aanpak nie – jou oë verdien ‘n volledige oogtoets elke twee jaar en gun jouself ‘n goeie donkerbril.

Jy is dalk onder die indruk dat die bril alles naby vir jou net vergroot en jy heel goed daarmee kan sien. Waarom duisende rande betaal vir ‘n getoetsde bril as ‘n onder R100-bril dan net VR JRHG YLU MRX ZHUN" 6RRV PHW GLH PHHVWH HUQVWLJH PHGLHVH toestande gaan jy nie werklik bewus wees van die simptome totdat dit eintlik ‘n groot probleem is nie. Toestande soos byvoorbeeld makulêre degenerasie, PVD’s, gloukoom of katarakte word ook onder andere uitgeskakel. Voorbereiding vir S.A.’s saam met Albert Nel Die nuwe hengeljaar is reeds goed op dreef en voorbereidings word getref om die ranglys van georganiseerde hengel te klim. Die sport is uiters mededingend en deelnemers beskou dit in ‘n baie ernstige lig tydens uitdunrondtes. >> Pierre le Roux k het met Albert Nel gesels wat onlangs verskeie oefensessies ingewerk het ter voorbereiding vir die SuidAfrikaanse hengelkampioenskappe wat in Maartmaand gaan plaasvind. Albert het in 2011 kompenterend begin hengel toe hy by sy hengelklub in Ladysmith, KZN, aangesluit het. Hy het in 2013 sy provinsialekleure verwerf en verteenwoordig nou sy klub se A-span wat huidiglik die klubkampioene is. In 2015 word hy as die Victor Ludorum gekroon in die president B-afdeling van die Suid-Afrikaanse kampioenskappe. Hy wou die jaar alles moontlik doen om beter te presteer weens die feit dat KwaZulu Natal bevorder is na die Premier-afdeling in 2016. Sy doelwit was om 300 visse te vang tydens die Desember-Januarievakansie. Hy wou dit gebruik as ‘n motivering om sy hengeltempo te verbeter. Tydens enige kompetisie speel tyd ‘n groot rol. Daar is tegnieke en metodes om vis vinniger kant toe te bring, te land en in die hounet te sit. Elke stap word noukeurig vooraf beplan. Die tyd wat jy spandeer tussen vangste moet soos tweede natuur ingeoefen word om die spoed waarteen jy werk effektief aan te wend. Ek het gesien hoe Albert in die vlakwater die vis moeg maak. Hy skakel sy katrol se anti-terugrol snellertjie af en katrol agteruit as die vis nog spookkrag in hom het, instede daarvan om sy spoel los te maak. Met groter vis gebruik hy die weerstand van sy spoel en kombineer die agteruitkatrol tegniek todat hy die vis skep. Albert het baie gefokus om akkuraat met elke gooi te wees sodat die vis wat by sy voerkol wei, vinniger hoekvat. Dit is vanselfsprekend dat ‘n onvoorbereide hengelaar soos ‘n paal bo water sal uitstaan. Ek vermoed dat daar destyds nie soveel vooraf beplanning en voorbereidings getref was tydens die aanloop van ‘n toernooi nie, maar in die

hedendaagse hengelklimaat en die tempo waarteen die sport ontwikkel, vereis deelname in Suid-Afrika deesdae baie meer. Albert het in verskeie nabygeleë plaasdamme sy oefensessies begin. Weens die lae reënval en die damme

is 450 miljoen kubieke meter. Heyshopedam is ‘n prima grootbekswartbaars hengelbesteming, maar daar is ook ‘n gesonde populasie van karp en geelvis. Woodstock Dam is weer ongeveer 50km suid van Harrismith, in die boloop van die Tugelarivier, geleë. Nog ‘n groot dam in ons land wat onder die oewerhengelaars se radar verdwyn het. Die dam is in 1983 voltooi en het ‘n bakmaat van 370 miljoen kubieke meter. Net soos Heyshope of enige groot dam in KwaZulu Natal, is dit gewild onder swarbaarhengelaars, maar by Woodstockdam kan groot karp en baber ook met die regte benadering uitgetrek word! Albert het sy vermoëns by die twee damme op die proef gestel waar slegte toestande en sterk winde die meerderheid van sy oefensessies oorheers het. Hy moes in beide groot damme meer staatmaak op die vis se gewig as op getalle. By Heyshopedam het hy op ‘n afstand van 125m op knip gevang en moes hard werk om sy teikenarea teen die sterk winde te bereik. Dit het vir Albert gemotiveer om teen die elemente van die natuur nogsteeds suksesvol te hengel. Die voordeel van enige kampioenskap of toernooi is dat die dag se weersomstandighede op almal dieselfde druk plaas. Hy verkies dit om tussen 85 en 115 meter oor die algemeen te hengel, maar weet ook dat afstande bo 125 meter soms die verskil kan maak om ‘n plek in die span te haal.

Hy het mieliepitte gebruik om die groter karp te teiken en gewone soet wit degies was die beste vir tempohengel. Hy het ook van rysmiere gebruik gemaak waarop groter karp gevang is. Wanneer die vis nie wou byt nie, het hy sy aas vir 60 tot 90 minute laat lê voordat hy aas herlaai het. By damme waar hy weet baie vis is, herlaai hy elke 20 minute. Tydens sy visvangperiode was daar geen reën betrokke nie, maar hy beplan om in reënweer nog ‘n sessie voor die kampioenskappe in te werk. Albert hengel tans met gebalanseerde gerei. Hy maak staat op ‘n paar goeie 12-voet stokke asook ‘n paar 10-voet stokke. Sy katrolle is van die beste “bait runners” op die mark en hy hou twaalf spaar spoele wat op verskillende afstande geknip is, byderhand. Hy gebruik ‘n OE KRRÀ\Q HQ OE YRRUVODJO\Q 'LH Rietvlei-glystrop is sy gunsteling. Hy gebruik ‘n 23lb skaglyn en bind sy hoeke met ‘n 9lb hoeklyn. Albert moes sewe besoeke by die YHUNLOOHQGH GDPPH DÀr RP V\ GRHOZLW te bereik. Hy glo dit is kardinaal om doelwitte te stel en om dit so gou as moontlik onder die belt te kry. Daar is seker ‘n element van geluk ook betrokke, maar om ‘n byl skerp te hou moet jy in jou af-tye die meeste werk insit. Albert het stelselmatig die visse ingepalm en volgehou om sy doelwit te bereik. Op 9 Januarie het hy sy drie-honderste vis uiteindelik gevang en met ‘n gevoel van vervulling kon hy die strydbyl begrawe. Dit het my laat wonder oor die hoeveelheid man-ure wat al in visvang ingesit is oor die afgelope dekade. My innige simpatie vir die vrouens wat botweg weier om saam die mans te gaan en noodgedwonge alleen by die huis moet agterbly... Die bespiegelings en planne wat naderhand in twakpraat verander... 'LH ¿QDQVLsOH JDW ZDDULQ M\ MRXVHOI NDQ dompel, maar nogsteeds terugkeer... Die onderonsies langs ‘n dam, maar ook die samehorigheid vir dieselfde doel... Hengel is die grootste deelnemende sport in die wêreld. Dan val dit my by, kan ons almal nie tog meer-groter-visse vang nie! Hoek-, lyn- en sinkerverlief as jy net jou eerste een kan uittrek! Vir Albert gaan dit oor meer as net visvang. Hy verkeer in die skepping waar ‘n sielkundige oplossing is vir enige probleem, selfs die probleme wat

Ek hou duim vas vir Albert dat 2016 vir hom nog ‘n verrykende jaar van hengel sal wees. So ook vir elkeen van julle wat lang ure spandeer om julle handewerk langs die water te verbeter!

Nie net is ‘n kampvuur gesellig nie, maar ook noodsaaklik nie. Dit wat nie gebruik word nie moet weggebĂŞre word en sorg dat voertuie ten alle tye gesluit is. Moet ook nie eenkant onder bome of in lang gras sonder beligting gaan kamp nie. Ons sorg vir ‘n groot kampvuur en is paraat. Meeste voorvalle gebeur in die aande tussen elf- en drie-uur die oggend wanneer mense vas slaap en die kampvure uitgebrand is. Die meeste oordeienaars doen hul bes om veiligheid te verseker, maar ongelukkig is daar groter risiko’s by hengelareas met geen behoorlike bestuur en toesig nie. Veral openbare damme is ‘n groot gevaar.

Hermien Strydom het die 7.7kg karp vroegoggend in Taaibosspruitdam, Coligny gevang. Sy het hom gevang op Corn Flakes en tiger nut met ‘n Sweet Corn-dip.

Die skurke kom nie net vanuit die bosse om die kamp-area nie, maar tydens ‘n vorige hengelsessie het rowers oor die water gekom het en toerusting gesteel. Dit gebeur veral as daar nie beweging in die kamparea is nie. Sorg dus dat jy ‘n gewilde hengeloord besoek; jou kamp-area naby goeie beligting is; naby aan ander kampeerders is en maak beurte om wakker te bly. Daar is drie vrae wat hengelaars altyd vra naamlik, waar, wanneer en waarmee? Grootbek-swartbaars hou van skoon, stadig-vloeiende water, maar verkies eerder stilstaande water wat baie skuilplek bied. Skuilplekke soos waterplante, rotse, bome en selfs

Swar tbaars mensgemaakte strukture soos brĂťe en ou paaie. Om op te som – al die plekke waar jy gaan vassit met jou kunsaas. Omrede swartbaars roofvis is, sal hulle in die skuilings se skadu’s lĂŞ en wag vir ‘n niksvermoedende maaltyd wat verbykom. Hulle vreet enige iets; vis, paddas, krappe, slange, insekte, voĂŤls en selfs hulle eie kleintjies. Die grootte van die aas skrik hulle ook nie af nie. Ek het al swartbaars gevang en gewonder wat het die vis gedink gaan hy met die aas maak as hy hom eers gevang het? Maar waar? Omtrent al die openbare damme in die land het deesdae swartbaars in. Dan is daar ook verskeie plaasdamme wat mooi vis het, maar toegang tot die damme is ‘n wesenlike probleem, en met goeie rede. Dit het alles te doen met respek. Op alle vlakke van die samelewing en onder alle volke is daar mense wat hulle wangedra en die geleenthede vir medehengelaars belemmer. Daar is ‘n gebrek aan basiese respek teenoor die natuur, jou medemens en sommer ook teenoor jouself! Dit is ‘n voorreg om buite in die natuur te kan wees en nie ‘n grondwetlike reg nie. Dus is dit van kardinale belang om vooraf toestemming by ‘n grondeienaar te kry om sy perseel te betree om ‘n lyntjie nat te maak. Met die werklikheid van plaasaanvalle en hoĂŤ vlakke van misdaad kan mens nie sommer net gou-gou ‘n draai by iemand se dam gaan maak nie. Kry toestemming en laat die eienaar weet wanneer jy daar gaan opdaag en weer vertrek. Indien jy so gelukkig is om wel toestemming te kry, word van jou verwag om die hengelarea netjies en skoon te laat; al is dit

nie eens jou rommel nie. Die grootste ergernis is toiletpapier wat soos kersboomversierings die veld rondwaai! Vislyn wat langs die dam en in die water gelaat word raak verstrengel om watervoĂŤls se pote en die arme diere vrek baie stadig van hongerte en dors. Gewoonlik sit die voĂŤls op plekke wat nie vir die mens bereikbaar is om hulle te red nie. Gebreekte bottels in en langs die water, asook leĂŤ blikke is ‘n groot nee-nee. G’n wonder grondeienaars is so taai om toestemming te verleen nie. Ongelukkig is hierdie optrede nie net beperk tot privaatdamme nie maar ook ‘n bekende gesig langs openbare damme. Iemand anders moet heeltyd optel en instand hou. Het ons mense nie meer trots nie? Ek het selfs al gehoor van gevalle waar “dagbesoekersâ€? vir hulle ‘n “ietsieâ€? saam huistoe gevat het. Die boer was glad nie beĂŻndruk toe hy die man voorkeer met ‘n sak vol vis wat hy langs die pad wou gaan smous nie. Dit is steel! Ook mag jy nie “ietsieâ€? skiet wat toevallig by jou verbystap nie, soos die stoetbul, ‘n wildsbok Ăłf selfs ‘n bakkievrag vuurmaakhout oplaai nie. Dit klink absurd, maar daar is werklik sulke stropers tussen ons wat alles belemmer. Hengel en hanteer alles om jou met respek!
