Dat winterhengel ‘n uitdaging is, is gewis – daaroor kan niemand stry nie. Gelukkig hou ek van ‘n uitdaging, en as jy boonop suksesvol is, is die oorwinningsgevoel tog soveel VRHWHU DV PHW µQ ÀRXHU XLWGDJLQJ Ek is absoluut gek oor winterhengel om verskeie redes. Om ‘n paar redes te noem: Die son is meer genadig op jou, daar is nie donderstorms en winde wat jou lyne koek nie, die goggas is minder en die groot vis wat wegbly van besige oewers af, kom nou nader. Die kleiner vis is ook minder aktief. As jy hou van rus en stilte langs die waters, is die feit dat daar minder hengelaars langs die oewer is, ook ‘n bonus. Sekere dele van ons land raak bitterkoud, veral langs die water, maar met die regte kleredrag en toerusting is dit hanteerbaar. Maak seker jy trek gemaklik en warm aan sodat jy nie so moet konsentreer om warm te bly, dat jy nie behoorlik op die hengel kan fokus nie. Daar is niks so aaklig om langs die waters te sit en so koud te kry dat jy van niks anders bewus is nie. Dit kan die genot van hengel heeltemal oorskadu en ek glo dis die rede vir baie mense se negatiewe gesindheid teenoor winterhengel. Nou hoor ek sommer die volgende vraag van ons lesers af: So as vis steeds in die winter gevang kan word, watse strategieë werk die beste vir winterhengel? Dit is eerstens baie belangrik om jou hengelwaters te bestudeer. ‘n Verkyker kan handig te pas kom om presies te sien waar die vis aktief is. Jy kan nie verwag die vis moet na jou toe kom nie, so jy moet bereid wees om agter die vis aan te trek met al jou toerusting. Doen jou huiswerk deeglik oor ase wat sal werk in die winter (lees VisKoors vir wenke). Jou somer-ase gaan nie die gewenste resultate gee in die winter nie. Voer heelwat minder in die winter. Maak ook jou hoeke en ase kleiner. Ek wens julle baie sterkte en sukses toe met die winterhengel. So where do we start? Perhaps the starting point in the question of bait strategy should be "sight" and "smell" factors which will hopefully lead WKH ¿VK WR WKH EDLW :KHWKHU RU QRW WKH ¿VK ZLOO HDW WKH EDLW RU swallow the hook and be caught becomes academic if it does QRW HLWKHU VHH RU VPHOO LW LQ WKH ¿UVW SODFH

A major difference is that their vision is lateral because the eyes are positioned on each side of their head. I have found that the following colours work best in the following situations, white or egg yellow against black mud; cherry red or DSSOH JUHHQ DJDLQVW D VDQG\ ERWWRP DQG ÀXRUHVFHQW EULJKWQHVV against the dull mat of rotting vegetation. In the same way as ¿VKLQJ OLQH PDQXIDFWXUHV VWULYH IRU FRORXUV WKDW EOHQG LQ ZKLWH the surroundings, bait colouring is intended to clash with VXUURXQGLQJV DQG OLWHUDOO\ FDWFK WKH H\H RI WKH DSSURDFKLQJ ¿VK Underwater the intensity of light is dimmed. Be careful of cheap PVA bags on the market as the material they are made of is very thin and will cause the bag to split. I have three sizes of PVA bags in my kit.

1. Hook bait bags These are designed just to take your hook bait and if required a free offering or two, making them ideal for presenting a hook bait on top of short weed or casting over weed at long range.

2. The bait bag This accommodates the hook and a nice quantity of bait to attract the carp and create a hard feeding situation. This method I have found to be exceptionally effective on waters with long straggly weed like Rietvlei in Milnerton Cape Town, where carp feed at the roots of the weed. The heavy weight of the bait¿OOHG EDJ DQG \RXU OHDG ZLOO GUDJ \RXU ULJ GRZQ WR WKH ERWWRP and ensure your rig is not caught up.

Daar is ander hengelaars wat oortuig is dat die maan geen uitwerking op karphengel het nie. Volgens hulle kan die vis enige tyd gevang word. Die aantrekkingskrag van die maan en die son het wel ‘n uitwerking op seehengel met hoog- en laagwater waar sekere tye beter hengel as ander. Selfs riviere en groot damme kan hierdeur geraak word. My eie hengelervaring het getoon dat groter karp tydens volmaan meer ongemaklik voel en minder wei. Selfs die kleiner karp vreet minder. Volmaan bied dus vir my ‘n stadiger hengelsessie. Die eerste sewe dae vanaf volmaan het die byttempo afgeneem wat gemaak het dat dit wel inderdaad ‘n moeilike hengelsessie was. Met nuwemaan het ek weer vangstes gekry vanaf die namiddag en weer in die laaste dae van nuwemaan in die vroeë

oggendure. Tydens die eerste kwartier was die meeste vangstes in die oggendure gewees, asook gedurende die dag wat ook vis opgelewer het. Met laaste kwartier was meeste van my vangstes in die namiddag gevang. Met sekere stande van die maan, asook sekere tye in die stande, sal dit aansienlik moeilik wees om te bepaal of die vis wel weer in dieselfde stande en tye sal wei as vantevore. Ek het wel met elke hengelsessie opgemerk dat met dieselfde stand en tye van die maan, daar nie noodwendig dieselfde hoeveelheid vis gevang word nie. Elke stand en tyd is verskillend en daar moet eerder gefokus word op die weersomstandighede waarin gehengel word. Dat volmaan wel ‘n uitwerking op groot karp het en dat dit nie ‘n goeie hengelsessie sal wees nie...is seker. BUSH BAITS! Gereeld lees ek van hoe goed die manne altyd doen, maar min lees ek van hoe hulle sukkel! Elke Januarie sluit Super Cast-fabriek vir een week nadat die Desember stormloop verby is. >> Loukie van der Merwe* it is dan my hengeltyd en dan wil ek groot visse vang! My keuse vanjaar was Donaldson-dam waar daar regtig mooi visse rondswem en ek weet daar is ‘n kans, as jy die dinge reg doen, om ‘n trofee vis te vang! Ek doen baie beplanning en voorbereiding vir my hengel, en ek maak altyd seker van waar die vis is, waarop hulle byt en ook hoe groot die vis is wat byt. Met my aankoms by die dam het ek reeds geweet hoe en waar ek hulle wil vang! Groot fout! Die area wat ek gekies het, is die dieper deel van die dam en ek het sommer met my aankoms 15kg boilies gevoer op twee verskillende plekke. Groter fout! Ek het gehoop dat die voerplekke die vis na my toe sou lok en om hulle dan so redelik maklik te vang. My planne het nie

Boilies werk vir groter visse

Moeilike sessie maar darem ‘n mooi vis so uitgewerk nie, maar ek is nie een wat maklik tou opgooi nie. Ek het vasberade aanhou hengel, maar wat volgende gebeur het, was nie goed vir my ego nie! My vriend Gary het daar aangekom saam met ‘n oorsese vriend om te kom hengel. Nick is ‘n vlieënier van Brittanje en elke keer as hy oorkom, vang hy so vir twee dae vis, waarna hy moet oornag en rus voordat hy mag terugvlieg! Gary vertel my van sy nuwe boilies genaamd Bush Baits Banoffee en Coconut Supreme. Die aas lyk regtig mooi en ruik ook goed, maar ek het mos vertroue in my eie aas! Ek vang vroeg die dag ‘n mooi vis van 12kg en neem ‘n foto! Toe die son sak begin my probleme. Hulle vang in die eerste aand vyf visse waarvan die grootste vis 18,6kg was en die ander vier almal tussen 14 tot 17kg. Wat ‘n pakslae! Die volgende oggend sit ek die

water en dophou, want ek het gevind dat wanneer die son opkom, die visse spring en sodoende gee hulle die area weg waar hulle die vorige nag gewei het. Die oggend toe ek opstaan, sien ek al die spinnerakke aan my swingers en ek weet dat dinge nou nie vir my uitwerk nie. Het jy al ooit daai moedelose, verlore gevoel gehad? Plan B! Ek trek my lyne in en sit nuwe “beter” aas aan en roei alles oor na die riette. As jy my dan gevra het sou ek goeie geld op ‘n byt gesit het! Ek het die stokke met soveel selfvertroue neergesit dat ek net dan en daar ‘n gevoel gehad het dat die visse sou byt, maar hulle het nie. Vir die volgende twee aande vang Nick nog 13 visse waarvan 8 bo die 14kg merk is! Ek kon in twee aande nie ‘n byt koop nie. Divan gaan sit die laaste aand nog verder af langs die dam met sy Bush

Baits Coconut Supreme en kry vier byte waarvan hy drie land en die swaarste vis 18kg was! Wel, ek was verslaan, maar nie weg nie! Oppad huistoe, maak ek planne vir my volgende hengelsessie. Ek kry van die Bush Baits-aas by Gary en maak seker van die area waar ek wil hengel. ‘n Stukkie goeie raad: Kry eers die vis, kyk hoekom hulle daar is en wat hulle wil eet. Dit is altyd goed om jou beplanning by die huis te doen, maar moet nie namens hulle besluit waar hulle gaan swem en wat hulle gaan eet nie, hulle besluit self! *Loukie van der Merwe is lid van Team Super Cast en ‘n baie bedrewe varswater hengelaar wie se mikpunt is om net groot karpe van 20kg of swaarder te vang. Soos ons afdraai na regs, sien ons die dam en dit was soos om die eerste keer die see te sien. Met die wat ek sit, begin ek weer nie lekker voel nie en vat die lang stappie na die grasdak toe in die bos! Ek besef dat ek een of ander maagvirus opgetel het! Ek kon nie eens my arms optel om in te gooi vir kurpers nie, so lam was ek gewees! Net so voor vyf die middag word ek wakker en met Oom Vos se advies sit ek die gekookte “tygernuts� op die eerste

Daar is geen waarborg dat jy ‘n 30 ponder gaan vang nie, want daar is nogsteeds ‘n mate van geluk betrokke (in my opinie)! Daardie aand het daar ‘n paar makriele en kurpers uitgekom; vis wat Massimo nog nooit gesien het nie. Met die son weg, het ons die braaivleisvuur aangesteek! Ja wel; al wat ek kon inkry was ‘n paar

Oewerhengel

Met baie min spoed het ek die oewer gehaal; dank Vader, wat ‘n verligting!" tennisbeskuitjies, terwyl almal lekker smul aan die vleis! Ek het in die bakkie gaan slaap met die hoop dat ek deur ‘n katrol wat loop, wakker gemaak sal word. So teen elfuur het die eerste katrol geloop, maar ongelukkig was dit nie een van my stokke nie. Ons klim toe op die boot en volg die lyn in, maar die vis stoei nie baie nie. Uiteindelik was die vis onder ons en kom baie vinnig op. Ag nee! Dis snorre; maar nietemin, dis ‘n “PB” vir Massimo wat ‘n 6kg baber land! Met ons aankoms te land, sê ek nogal ons moet net die ander battery in die boot sit, maar ja, ‘n man is moeg, sal dit mos môre doen! Net voor vyf die oggend, toe loop my stok! Ek klim toe alleen op die boot, so 300 meter in kom ek tot die nare besef dat ek nooit die ander battery op die boot gelaai het nie en dat ek moontlik nie

toelaat om by die kant te kom en te kan spog! Met baie min spoed het ek die oewer gehaal; dank Vader, wat ‘n verligting! Ek wou gil van blydskap, maar daar was nog mense wat slaap! Die eerste ding wat ek wou sien was daai groot botterspaan waarvan almal altyd praat! So het die fotosessie begin, hoewel die vis nie so groot was nie, was dit nogsteeds my persoonlike beste van 11.18kg en die vis was mooi! Die binnekant van haar bek was donker, soos sy in die silt gevoer het! My skuldgevoel dat ek haar gevang het, het verdwyn toe sy wegswem, gesond en reg vir nog ‘n hengelaar se droom! Die versoeking was groot dat ek nog ‘n aand oorslaap en miskien weer een bietjie groter vang! Maar ongelukkig kom plig voor plesier! Massimo het besluit om eerder te bly en saam met Oom Vos terug te ry. Die volgende oggend ontvang ek ‘n foto van Massimo en Oom Vos wat elkeen pragvisse vashou! Maar nou ja, dit was my keuse gewees om te ry. Laastens, wil ek graag vir alle nuwe hengelaars, ongeag hulle fasset aanraai om die regte vrae te vra. My First Zambezi off Umhlanga ,W ZDV D VWUDQJH PLVW\ 'HFHPEHU DIWHUQRRQ RQ WKH 8PKODQJD FRDVW , KDG EHHQ ÂżVKLQJ VLQFH about 15:00 with no luck when one of the locals gave me a live shad to slide out. >> William Langford* rigged the shad on a heavy slide trace, sent him out and placed my rod in the pension pole. As there were a few shad around I decided to rig my spinning rod up and have a couple of throws. I was working some nice deep water just behind the shore break with my spoon when my other rod caught my eye. The rod was bouncing in the pension pole and this was the common characteristic of a spinner shark. I pulled my rod out of the holder, tightened up and felt the knocking of the spinner shark and thought what a waste of a live shad. As I reeled the spinner shark in I realized I was out

of decent bait so I quickly unhooked the spinner, placed the back hook of my slide trace in the dorsal of the spinner, cast my 9oz grapnel and swam the grey down my line. It all went fairly smoothly and soon my grey was in the hit zone so I placed my rod back in the pension pole. Although I thought this was a bit ambitious, you have more chance with a bait in the water than an empty hook on the beach. , JDWKHUHG P\ VSLQQLQJ RXWÂżW DQG UHVXPHG WR VSLQ (YHQWXDOO\ what was supposed to be a few throws turned into hours and my arm felt like it was suffering from third degree burn and still no

Salt Water bite. The sun had started to set, and I could see everyone around had started packing up. I felt a little disheartened and the regular feeling of defeat as I headed towards my tackle station. I was reaching for my pliers when I heard that one sound in the world where everything else becomes oblivious. I turned in disbelief towards my rod and true enough it was buckled over zzzzzzzzz‌ My blood pressure raised and the adrenalin pumped around my body as I grabbed my rod and tightened up zzzzzzzzz zzzzzz. I was on! My live spinner shark had been HDWHQ , UHDOLVHG , ZDV RQ WR D ELJ ÂżVK DQG ZDV JRLQJ WR QHHG help! I held my rod in one hand and reached in my pocket for P\ SKRQH ZLWK WKH RWKHU , GLDOOHG D JRRG ÂżVKLQJ IULHQG RI PLQH Kelvin, who I met in my younger days while he was working at 7KH .LQJÂżVKHU $V KH DQVZHUHG KH FRXOG VWLOO KHDU P\ UDWFKHW screaming and asked, “Where are you?â€? I replied “S-bendâ€? he was on his way back from Ballito, but would be there in ÂżIWHHQ , DOVR PDGH FDOOV WR P\ JLUOIULHQG -D\GD WKH WUXVWHG photographer and good friend Lars, who didn’t believe we got sharks off Umhlanga. My reel was soon down to the last 200m of braid and this story looked like it was going to end with an anti-climax when the shark turned and headed straight towards me. I quickly recovered line and soon the shark was in the mid break. The shark headed North and I slowly followed keeping as much pressure on him as I could with a medium assassin rod and Shimano Torium 30. I heard some commotion behind me and VDZ .HOYLQ /DUV DQG -D\GD DOO KHDGLQJ WRZDUGV PH 7KDQN goodness as it was now pitch black and was getting a little nervous of what could be in the bushes behind. I was gaining

line back regularly and knew the shark was getting close. We all had our head lamps on and were trying to spot the shark. “Over there!â€? shouted Lars. We could now see the shark cruising along in the shore break. Kelvin was eager to grab the shark but it turned and headed out. I had the shark back within minutes though and Kelvin was back in the water, ready to wrestle the shark out with his bare hands. The shark lifted up in the shore break. I straight sticked the shark and assisted washing it up in front of Kelvin where he didn’t hesitate to grab the tail. As I saw he had the tail I dropped my rod and ran to assist. The shark thrashed around a bit but we managed to pull him out the shore break and on the beach. We were both admiring the power and size of the shark when we noticed the tadpole like head‌ it was a Zambezi, the well-known and feared man eater also known as a bull shark. The shark was hooked just in the lower jaw. I used my grapnel to pull the hook out, snapped some pictures and proceeded to put the Zambezi shark back in the ocean where he belonged. We were in luck as I was exhausted and my arms felt like jelly EXW RQH RI P\ PDWHV -DFTXHV KDG EHHQ UXQQLQJ RQ WKH EHDFK when he saw the commotion and, as we Durbanites say, pulled LQ -DFTXHV ZDV D VWURQJ ER\ DQG KHOSHG XV LQ UHOHDVLQJ WKH Zambezi safely back into the sea. Ek was oorweldig met die verskeidenheid en kleure. Ek was nie daar om sy winkel te koop nie… ek wou net kunsaas hê!

Die eenvoudigste aas wat nogsteeds baie effektief is maar selde gebruik word, is ‘n nommer drie Mepps Black Fury. Die aas het ‘n silwer of swart lem met ‘n plakker en geel kolletjies daarop. Die swaailem is baie lig en sal verkieslik PHW µQ NRI¿HPHXONDWURO HQ JHSDVWH VWRN gehengel word.

Swar tbaars Spinnerbaits is die eintlike aas wat enige hengelaar regdeur die jaar, enige plek, enige diepte kan gebruik en nogsteeds sukses behaal. Die verskil in aanbiedings sal die deurslaggewende faktor wees. ‘n Voordeel van die aas is dat dit nie so maklik vashaak en verlore raak nie. Die grootte en vorm van die lemme, die kop se gewig asook die kleure van die frokkies / toiĂŻngs speel ‘n belangrike rol in jou keuse. Die waterhelderheid bepaal die grootte en vorm van die swaailem se lemme. Sonder om te tegnies te raak – in helder water gebruik ons twee “willow leafâ€? lemme en in troebel water gebruik ons Colorado-lemme wat stadig draai en sterk vibrasies uitstuur. (Daar is ‘n verskeidenheid van ander soort lemme, maar wat nie nou ter sake is nie. Indien die hengelgogga jou gebyt het, kan jy ‘n diepte studie daaroor gaan doen.) In my arsenaal sal daar ten minste ‘n ZLW FKDWUHXVH ³¿UH WLJHU´ HQ ÂľQ Âł-XQHEXJ´ kleurige spinnerbait wees. Wit is ‘n goeie kleur indien die water helderskoon is en donkerder kleure in meer troebel water. Hierdie aas dryf nie en die swemdiepte word bepaal hoe vinng die aas ingebring word. Gooi die aas uit en trek dit stadig teen ‘n konstante tempo terug indien die ZDWHU WURHEHO LV -\ PRHW GLH OHP YRHO vibreer. Sodra jy die lem nie meer voel nie, beteken dit dat ‘n vis die aas moontlik gegryp het; daar is watergras om jou aas wat verwyder moet word, of jou vislyn is om die kunsaas verstrengel. In helder water bring ek my aas in teen ‘n wisselende trek-stop tempo om ‘n beseerde klein vissie na te boots. In koue water moet ek aanpas by die visse wat nie gaan lus wees vir ‘n honderd meter wedloop nie. Die aas moet baie stadig, (die lemme moet net-
