Herfs… unieke seisoen OEKOM herfs my gunsteling-seisoen is… Herfs is nie te warm nie en nie te koud nie; dis mooier as lente… wie hou nou van groen en pienk as daar iets soos goud, roesrooi en mosterdgeel is? Die eerste herfsdag herinner jou daaraan dat koeler dae voorlê. Koeler dae beteken dat koudbloediges, goggas en diesel-voertuie binnekort met al meer moeite gaan beweeg. Die son is meer genadig op jou, daar is nie donderstorms en winde wat jou lyne koek nie, die goggas is minder en die groot vis wat wegbly van besige oewers af, kom nou nader. Die kleiner vis is ook minder aktief. As jy hou van rus en stilte langs die waters, is die feit dat daar minder hengelaars langs die oewer is, ook ‘n bonus. Doen jou huiswerk deeglik oor ase wat sal werk in die laatherfs (lees VisKoors vir wenke). Jou somer-ase gaan nie die gewenste resultate gee in die kouer weer nie. Die kouer aande lei daartoe dat die gehalte van jou leestydvoor-slaaptyd drasties verhoog, ook omdat dit nog nie so koud is dat jou hande vries as jy dit bo die duvet uitsteek nie. Herfs bied jou die ideale geleentheid om weer deur daardie hoop VisKoorse te lees en so jou huiswerk te doen. Die Nqabararivier en die Kabbeljoukoning >> Pierre le Roux aar twee onbekende riviere saamvloei voor dit gesamentlik in die Indiese Oseaan uitmond, is ‘n afgeleë plek wat die wese van die wildekus volhou. Die Nqabara- en Nqabaranariviere ontmoet mekaar teen die kus van die voormalige Transkei. Soos jy die monding nader en oor ‘n steil heuwel neerdaal, word ‘n idilliese sandbaai tussen die klowe ontbloot. Inheemse woud en ikoniese graslande bedek die randjies van die omliggende gebied. Behalwe vir die tradisionele Xhosas wat hoofsaaklik van die omgewing se natuurlike hulbronne afhanklik is, is die area ongerep.

Veruil jou vaswater vir sout Die Nqabararivier is nie so groot soos die Kei, of die Mbasheriviere nie, maar die monding is diep genoeg om vismigrasie te hanteer. Aan die Noordekant van die mond strek wye rotsplate wat tydens laagwater beter hengelpotensiaal in die 06 VisKoors | May 2016

see bied. Aan die Suidekant van die mond is ‘n ontoeganklike, eksotiese strand tensy jy per boot die rivier oorsteek. Bote kan geloods word 500m van die monding af maar die steil dalende roete is nie vir tweewiel aangedrewe voertuie geskik nie. Die Nqabararivier kronkel deur moerasse, riete en graslande. Waar hoë kransmure uit die bodem van die rivier styg is die rivier op sy diepste. Die kuil staan bekend as “Cob Hole” ongeveer 1,5km teen die rivier op. Daar is om elke draai ‘n rivierstrook met ‘n ander naam bv.“Garrick Straights”, Vinknes en Likkewaangat. Name gedoop deur ‘n hengelaar wat die rivier soos die palm van sy hand geken en die woord Nqabara destyds op ‘n geheimsinnige seerowerskaart raakgelees het? Chris Nel, oftewel Spier soos almal hom ken, kom elke jaar hierheen. Sy vrou, Etresia, vergesel hom terwyl die res van die gesin beurte maak om na dinge by die huis om te sien. Die wat nie kan saamgaan nie moet met hartseer gesiggies agterbly. Nadat ek menigmaal na die stories van Nqabara moes luister,

het Spier my die jaar ook saam genooi. Sy seun, Albert, kon tydens die kort skoolvakansie die geleentheid bywoon. Spier se afgetrede vriend, Franco (die Italianer), en sy vrou Sherly, het ook by ons aangesluit. Ek was opgewonde om vir die eerste keer die wildekus te besoek en varswaterhengel te verruil vir die smaaklike eetbare vis wat hier wemel!

Eers lanseer; dan seekatpoot! Dit was nie lank nadat alles afgepak is, dat Spier se soutwaterdors geles moes moet word nie. Hy wou sy boot so gou as moontlik in die water kry, vasanker en seekat soek, maar die keer het die leisel van sy 25 perde hom van plan laat verander. Die klank van sy boot se motor wat na die eerste slingerswaai vat, maak die verskil. Hy het buitendien die see net een kyk gegee en geweet die tyd vir seekat jag is nog nie reg nie. Die gevriesde sardyne sal vir eers moet doen. Twee klein bootstokke, ‘n opvoustoel en die Nqabarastroom maak dit moeilik om nie die water te gaan toets nie. Dit is waarna hy verlang. Al is die rivier sy oudste vriend bly dit elke jaar vir hom soos ‘n nooiensvaart tot waar die rivier se bodem wegsink. Die enjin word gesmoor voor hy die arena binnedryf. As die ankers weer water tref, is hy terug in sy element. Toeskouers met lang snawels wat op die takke sit, vlug weg, want die Kabbeljou Koning is terug. Spier kan nie die myle bymekaar tel wat hy al in sy lewe agter kabbeljou aan gery het nie! Ons was nogsteeds opsoek na seekat, maar Spier ken die inwoners van die omgewing en hulle ken hom ook goed. Hulle kom gou agter wanneer hy hier is en smous aan hom die nodige aas wat hy kort. Dit help om Xhosa te verstaan, want in Engels kom jy dalk net ver genoeg om glad nie te verstaan wat hulle probeer sĂŞ nie. Spier praat vlot Zulu en die twee tale is na genoeg aan mekaar om maklik te kommunikeer. Die toestande langs die kus bepaal alles en die plaaslike entrepreneurs sal nie aas gaan vang as die see dit nie toelaat nie. Spier moes die sardynvoorraad spaarsamig rantsoeneer vir die eerste paar sessies op die rivier. Jy weet nooit wanneer jy nog aas in die hande gaan kry nie‌

weer volpak. Die see wag nie vir slapers nie! Ek het gou besef dat ons oor die volgende tien dae min slaap gaan inkry. Net soos die name by die rivier het die rotse teen die kuslyn ook name gekry. Trappies is Spier se gunsteling rots waar drie klipblaaie soos trappies in die branders afsak. Tydens laagwater maak die brander-gordyn oop om toegang tot die verste platvorm te verleen. Daar is aan beide kante slote uit die rots gekloof waar jy jou vis makliker kan uittrek. Die eerste dag was die see bruisend en rye branders het op mekaar gepak. Wit perdjies het

Die lank gewag oor die blou oseaan gallop en ons moes van die rotse afkom. Een jaar het Etresia naby die helling van ‘n rotsskeur gestaan en hengel toe ‘n fratsgolf haar omgeslaan het en in die skeur wou intrek. As dit nie vir Wikus, haar skoonseun, was wat sy stok se punt na haar toe uitgesteek het om aan vas te gryp nie, was sy deur die branders ingesluk! Daar is ‘n reël op die rotse wat jou lewe kan red - jy moet nooit jou rug op die see draai nie en sy onvoorspelbaarheid altyd in ag neem.

Toringtjies is ‘n ent se stap verder teen die stand op waar die rotse soos toringtjies gestapel staan. Vir die ervare hengelaar is dit ‘n uitdagende terrein. Om groot kabbeljou hier uit te trek moet jy jou storie ken. Spier het al ‘n paar blink lywe teen die skerp rotspunte verloor waaroor hy vandag nog spyt is. Etresia het ons almal die jaar ore aangesit op die rotse. Spier se insette speel ook ‘n rol. Hy doen die aasbereiding en gooi vir haar in. Eetbare vis en interessante spesies Die wildekus is van die gesogste soutwaterhengelbestemmings in Suid-Afrika. Daar is ‘n lang lys van verskillende spesies wat gevang kan word. Die eindelose strande, riviermondings en rotsbanke, huisves “rekord brekers” en vir die wat eerder sy eie rug wil breek, is daar reuse haaie waaroor elke sporthengelaar droom. Spier het al lankal opgehou om haaie te teiken. Dit put jou so uit dat jy ‘n dag moet afstaan om te herstel. Ons het gekom om eetbare spesies te teiken! jaar sy eerste piksteel katonkel (baracuda) in die rivier gevang. Die baracuda is van die mees aggressiewe visspesies in die Suid-Afrikaanse soutwaters. Hy is ‘n vurige roofvis en baklei vreesloos as jy hom eers gehaak het. Albert het later op die rotse ‘n kleurvoller vangs gemaak. ‘n Vis waarmee ek nog nie van te vore te doen gekry het nie. Die band-galjoen kan gevang word met rooiaas, garnale of mossel. Hulle is redelik vollop vanaf die Kaap tot aan die Natalse kus. Hy het nie die ryk en vol smaak van sy verwante eweknie, die Kaapse galjoen nie, maar is nogsteeds ‘n smaaklike eetvis. Dit is een ding van die see, jy weet nooit wat jy als kan vang nie en leer elke keer iets nuuts. Een oggend het Etresia vir die grap haar lyn in die sterk stroom by die loodstafel gegooi terwyl ons die bote vasgeanker het. Daar was nog ‘n sardienjie aan haar hoek wat sy nie wou mors nie. Sy het onverwags ‘n slim-jannie uitoorlê. Alhoewel dit nie ‘n gewilde eetvis is nie, is dit moeilik om hulle te vang.

Soutwater Hy het sy naam gekry weens die feit dat hy jou aas op ‘n slim en skelm manier van die hoek kan afvreet. Ons vanglys van verkillende spesies was stadig besig om te groei. Die beste deel van ‘n visvangvakansie by die see is om jou vangs vir die dag voor te berei vir ‘n maaltyd. Spier het vroeĂŤr met sy gooinet ‘n pan vol garnale gevang en ons het ook ‘n paar mossels by die Xhosa vrouens op die rotse gekoop. Jy kan hier sonder ‘n yskas vir maande lank oorleef as jy weet hoe om seekos gaar te maak. Is daar dan ‘n beter manier as om direk uit die broodmandjie van die see op te dis?

Krappe en palings Ons het uiteindelik Spier se gunsteling aas in die hande kry. Seekatpoot is so taai soos rubber en die aaspikkers kry hom nie sommer van jou hoek afgevreet nie. Jy ryg hom soos ‘n dik wurm aan jou hoek. Die nadeel van seekatpoot (in die rivier), is dat ‘n eienaardige bodembewoner met ‘n bedrieglike agenda ook daarvoor lief is. Modderkrappe kan jou aas met hoek en al stroop sonder dat jy dit eers agterkom. Albert was die grootste slagoffer van krap-sabotasie. Hulle kry dit soms reg om jou hoeklyn met hul knypers mors af te knip. Die beste manier om dit te verhoed is om die bewegings op jou stok se punt fyn dop te hou. As iets agterdogtig lyk, moet jy jou lyn vinnig stywer trek. Jy sal gou agterkom of daar ‘n krap aan is of nie. Dit voel asof jy ‘n stuk seebamboes deur die water sleep. Die verdagte kandidaat sal aan jou lyn bly vasklou vir lewe of dood. Party hang soos ‘n akrobaat met een arm in die lug as jy hom aan jou lyn uit die water tel. Eers as jy hom ‘n paar goeie stampe teen die boot se kant gegee het, sal die ou kĂŞrel los. Dit is nie iets wat jy saam met jou op die boot wil hĂŞ nie. Daai “Pop Eyeâ€? arm se klou sal jou tone knyp dat die bloed loop! Modderkrap is ‘n gewilde seekos en baie mense verkies dit bo kreef. Baie hengelaars sal net een van sy voorkloue afbreek voor hy hom weer vrylaat. Dit gee die krap darem ‘n kans om te oorleef en los jou met ‘n sappige happie om later te kook. Daar kan seker niks anders in die see wees, wat soos ‘n paling baklei nie. Hulle kan ‘n verpesting wees. Hy is net soos die modderkrap ook baie lief vir seekatpoot en as jy hom eers gehaak het, wil jy eerder jou lyn afsny! Die slymslang kom met ‘n boorpomp-aksie al nader. Hy swem nie soos ‘n vis kante toe nie, maar mik reguit na die punt van jou stok. Dan vorentoe, dan agtertoe. Hy wen homself soveel keer teen jou lyn op dat hy eintlik meer van die inkatrolwerk doen as jy. Palings het ‘n stel skerp tande wat mooi by sy beduiwelde gesiggie pas. Daarom dat jy hom met ‘n tang aan sy bekkie gryp en goed vasknyp om jou hoek los te wikkel. Ons kon hoor hoe lekker daar gesels word as Spier een vang. Hy stuur hom terug na daar waar hy vandaan kom, met ‘n boodskap om aan die res van sy makkers oor te dra! Jy kan nie jou brood aan altwee kante gebotter wil het nie, maar enige soort aas het sy eie uitdagings.

Spier en Etresia was gemakliker op sy boot. Hy het vir sy boot ‘n dek ingebou sodat sy kampstoel daarop kan staan, terwyl Etresia voor op die boeg sit. Jy moet ongelukkig die ure insit as jy suksesvol wil wees. Ons het bly hoop vir ‘n vis wat jy vir altyd sal onthou en Spier wou nie sy kans verby laat gaan nie. Soms is die see vol beloftes, maar ek het geleer dat hy jou geduld meestal beproef. Ten spyte van die palings en krappe wat ons deur die stil tye besig gehou het, was daar goeie vangste gewees. Etresia en Spier het uiteindelik ‘n mooi kabbeljou gevang. Franco

Onder mekaar het ons kabbeljou, knorhaan, katonkel, elf, slim-jannie, pylstert, kolstert, band-galjoen, stinkvis en …ek het die enigste klip kabeljou gevang. Al die vis wat te klein was het ons vrygelaat. Dit is baie belangrik om jouself met die beperkings en regulasies van soutwaterhengel te vereenselwig. Die Suid-Afrikaanse rekreasie-visvangwette word elke jaar aangepas volgens die stand waarin die afsonderlike spesies bevind word. Die nodige hengelpermitte is by enige poskantoor verkrygbaar. Die lewendige natuurlike hulbronne langs die kus van Suid-Afrika is nasionale skatte wat onder geweldige druk gebuk gaan. Dit is elke hengelaar se persoonlike verantwoordelikheid om die toekoms van ons erfenis te verseker.

‘n Sandhaai vir troosprys of ‘n Boerpot vis? Die dae het vinnig verbygevlieg en daar was nog soveel om te doen. Ek en Albert het besluit om die laaste aand nie op die rivier uit te gaan nie. Die baai aan die oorkant van die rivier het belowend gelyk en ons het besluit om die plek te gaan verken. Spier het vol selfvertroue die vorige aand aan tafel ‘n weddenskap met ons aangegaan... as ons enige iets aan die oorkant van die mond gevang kry, sou hy sy bakkie op Albert se naam sit. Dit was genoeg aansporing dat ons die uitdaging dadelik aanvaar het. Ons het die gooinet saam geneem en Albert het vir ons ‘n paar klawerkoppe (harders) in die vlakwater van die kleiner Nqabaranarivier gevang. Dit is ‘n verlate stuk strand en jy sien nêrens voetspore in die sand nie. Oor die duin het die see gelê en wag vir Albert om sy boerpot los te slaan. Ek het die branders ingestap om my lewendige aas so diep as moontlik in te kry. Albert het ‘n perfekte tjokka asie tussen die branders van die kant af ingestoot. My lyn het vinnig saam met die branders

Albert gooi vir klawerkoppe uitgespoel, maar ek het besluit om dit te los. Ek wou bystaan as Albert sy vis uittrek. Met my stok se agterkant in die sand gepen, het ek langs hom gestaan en wonder; “Die genadelose see en sy eindelose swoeg… Hoeveel golwe het hy al in sy lewe uitgespoeg? Kan hy dan ons nie net iets gee nie?” Ons het daar gestaan en kyk hoe die son oor die horison kwyn. Die mense wat sê dat daar baie vis in die see is, moet dalk ‘n vistok koop en self kom probeer! Ons was verslaan. Dit was tyd om op te trek en handoek in te gooi. Ek het in die rigting van die branders gestap terwyl ek my lyn inkatrol. Toe ek besef dat daar al die tyd iets aan my lyn was, het ek woes in Albert se rigting begin skreeu. Ek was so bly dat ek uiteindelik ‘n groot vis aan my lyn gehad het, dat ek nie geweet het of ek moet lag en of ek moet huil nie. In my geestesoog kon ek klaar sien hoe Spier die papiere teken en sy bakkie se sleutels oorhandig. Albert het my lyn in die vlak branders met sy koplig gevolg. Ek was verbaas om nie die weerkaatsing van ‘n silwer lyf te sien nie, maar ‘n plat gespikkelde ding. Toe Albert begin lag het, het ek geweet dat dit glad nie dit was wat ek verwag het nie. My eerste sandhaai was dalk nie die kabbeljou waaroor ek gedroom het nie, maar ek was tevrede met my vangs. Spier het later die gesprek wat ons aan tafel gehad het, herroep. Hy het ons herinner dat hy wel gesê het as ons ‘n sandhaai vang, dit nie tel nie! Hy het geweet dat ons nie ‘n vis aan die oorkant van die mond sal vang nie en ‘n haai is nie ‘n vis volgens hom nie. Ek het later op Google die feite gaan naslaan en dit lees soos volg: “These are common misunderstandings about sharks. Dwesa-Cwebe Die laaste dag het die avontuurlustigheid my vir oulaas beetgepak. Ek het besluit om die Dwesa-Cwebe natuurreservaat 7,5km Noord-Oos van Nqabara te gaan verken. Dwesa-Cwebe is ‘n beskermde gebied en bestaan uit twee gedeeltes wat deur die Mbasherivier geskei word. Dwesa lê Suid-Wes van die Mbashe tot by Nqabara en Cwebe strek Noord-Oos tot by die Ntlonyanerivier. Hengel is nie verbode in die reservaat nie, maar jy moet ‘n hengellisensie op jou naam hê. Jy mag net een vis per dag verwyder en dit kan slegs binne die grense van

die reservaat geëet word. Die reservaat strek vir 14km langs die kus en ongeveer 5km na die binneland. Die oseaan word ook vir ses aanlandige seemyl beskerm. Dit beteken dat hier geen oorbeviste water is nie. Toegangsfooie is slegs R10,00 per persoon vir dagbesoekers. Die area is dig bebos en die paadjie lei jou deur pragtige duinwoude, sub-tropiese plantasies en graslande. Ek het my visstok en klein aaskassie saamgebring, net vir die wis en die onwis. Ek het die roete gevolg tot by Mendu Punt. Die paadjie was baie lanklaas in gebruik, want as jy moet stop om boomtakke

Soutwater uit die pad te sleep, kan jy maar weet dat hier baie selde mense kom. Die paadjie verlaat die woud en vat jou deur groen heuwels tot by rotse wat oor die see uitkyk. Ek het werklik kwesbaar gevoel by hierdie verlate kus waar beeste op die strand stap. Dit was vreemd om hulle op so plek te sien waar daar niks te vrete of te drinke is nie. Die see het vir ‘n oomblik baie lewendig gelyk en ek het besluit om ‘n paar gooie te maak. Daar was dadelik aanvalle op my aas, maar die see was weer so ontstuimig soos op ons eerste dag. ‘n Brander het my byna van die rotse afgeslaan en ek het besluit om terug te keer na my bakkie toe. Om man-alleen by vreemde rotse te hengel is onverantwoordelik. Ek het my stok opgevou en nederig vrede met die see gemaak. Dit was ‘n voorreg om net die wildernis te bewonder terwyl jy ‘n koue bier op ‘n veilige hoogte geniet. Ek het oppad terug by Dwesa Punt ingedraai en my laaste aas vir die plaaslike hengelaars wat besig was om op te pak, gegee. Hulle het ook gesien dat die see te wild was. My laaste stop was by Kobole Mond. Hier loop die rivier dood voor dit die see bereik, maar ek is seker dit vloei sterk na goeie reëns. Daar was nog beeste wat deur die deinserigheid in die rigting van ‘n grasheuwel oor die strand gestap het. Die skemerlig het aangedui dat ek ook moet huiswaarts keer. Die afgelope tien dae was ‘n belewenis. ‘n Ervaring wat ek altyd sal koester. Die wilde kus is ‘n plek vir kaalvoetlopers, weglopers en soekers… Soekers wat alles hier sal vind.

Although meat baits and meat-based ground baits are no longer a rarity, many are deterred from using them by problems of cost, hooking and presentation. Mounting the bait Mounting the cubes of bait onto a hook requires care. I always choose a hook that is too big rather than too small. Sizes of 8 to 4 are my usual choice. I push the point of the hook slowly into the centre of the cube before threading it round onto the bend, making sure that the barb shows. To prevent the bait from jerking free use a small portion of green leaf folded double. This should be pushed over both point and barb to act as a platform behind the cube, and into which it will press

during the thrust of the cast. It will not affect the hooking properties, and will save endless re-baiting. There are variations on the luncheon meat theme such as Spam and salami or Vienna sausage. Tip: Avoid meat which is over seasoned. Corn beef is a great choice but tends to VKUHG HDVLO\ , QRUPDOO\ ÂżVK ZLWK WKLV LQ a PVA bag.

Yet on a kayak you are constantly tying off on something or somewhere and while I have a long anchor rope and several leashes to tie RI RU DQFKRU LW LV VXUSULVLQJ KRZ RIWHQ , KDYH XVHG P\ H[WUD rope to improvise an anchor or tow something.

5. A multi tool

There are many angler who like to put the their transducers on outriggers but I don’t like the H[WUD GUDJ LW FUHDWHV KRZHYHU VOLJKW VR , RSWHG WR DWWDFK PLQH WR WKH UHDU RI WKH ERDW XVLQJ WKH H[LVWLQJ PRXQWLQJ point originally intended for the rudder system. I build a YHU\ VLPSOH VXSSRUW DUP XVLQJ [ PP HOERZ EHQGV DQG D VKRUW SLHFH RI PP SLSH ,Q DQ HIIRUW WR PDNH WKH ZKROH thing fold or break away in case of a rock strike I also only attached the transducer with cable ties that will hopefully fail and break away before a strike can damage the electronics.

“Bass Basics” – Hantering Swartbaarhengel is vir my ‘n groot uitdaging. Om te weet daar is vis in die dam, jy het die nodige toerusting, jy dink jy het die nodige kennis, maar om die vis uit te oorlê... dit is nie altyd so maklik soos dit klink nie. Die groen vissie het die vermoë om alle hengelaars nederig te hou. Sommige is net meer gereeld nederig as ander. >> Hannes Lindeque* aar! Wanneer die vis uiteindelik gevang word is dit nodig om die vis korrek te hanteer. Ons het ‘n vorige keer gepraat oor respek en dit is hier van toepassing. Behandel die vis (natuur) met respek. Daar is ‘n regte en verkeerde manier om die vis te hanteer. Dit is verkeerd om die vis te gryp en orals aan die lyf te vat. Die vis het ‘n slymlaag wat afgevryf word. Al word die vis met die mees edele bedoelings vrygelaat is die vis nogsteeds in lewensgevaar. Onder andere beskerm

die slymlaag die vis teen varswater bakterieë wat groot lelike swamme en swere op die vis se lyf veroorsaak. Soms is die aanslag so erg dat die vis uitteer en vrek... Soveel vir “catch-and-release”! Nog ‘n simpel idee is om soos die Amerikaners op televisie, die vis in die boot in te “swing”. Die enigste rede hoekom hulle dit regkry is omrede hulle vissies so klein is. Ons Afrika-visse is oor die algemeen meer barbaars. Hulle breek ons visstok se punte, die lyn kan breek en die vis kom weg, die hoek skeur uit

die vis se bek, die vis swaai teen die boot vas, die vis val op die boot se mat en vryf sy slymlaag af – ongeag, dit bly ‘n simpel idee! Die korrekte manier om ‘n swartbaar te hanteer is om die vis aan die onderlip te gryp en te “lip-land”. (Eintlik enige groot vis sonder tande – Red.) Dit word gedoen met jou “slimhand”. Druk jou duim binne-in die vis se bek en knyp die vis se lip tussen jou duim en wysvinger vas. Maar jy moet vat! Enige ordentlike vis gaan hom nie sommer aan sy lip uit

Swar tbaars die water laat lig nie. Dit gaan ‘n geruk en geskud wees om weg te kom. In die proses kan die vis op die grond val, seerkry en sy slymlaag afvryf. Jy moet vat en vashou! Groter visse moet verkieslik met ‘n net geskep word en dan aan die lip verder hanteer word. Groot visse moet ook verkieslik met ‘n nat hand onder die pens ondersteun word, want ek dink nie ek gaan daarvan hou om vir paar minute aan my onderkaak te hang nie. Dink net hoe gaan my kakebeen voel en vir hoeveel dae gaan ek sukkel om te eet – nou ja, die arme vis ook. Kry die vis vinnig uit die water, hanteer die vis op die regte manier, neem jou foto en laat die vis vry. Enige taksidermis wat sy sout werd is kan vir jou ‘n getroue replika maak met die nodige afmetings (gemeet van kop tot stert, asook die omtrek) tesame met ‘n paar goeie fotos om die regte kleur te kry. Hoekom? Geen boer slag sy stoetbul vir biltong nie; met ander woorde as jy vis wil eet, slag eerder die jonger vis en laat die stoetkoeie vry. Moet nie die vis met geweld teruggooi nie, die vis laat val nie, aan die lyf vat nie... nee, sit die vis versigtig terug vir ‘n volgende keer. Die amptelike huidige Suid-Afrikaanse rekord is oor die 6kg, maar die meeste hengelaars vang vis in die orde van 800 gram. Indien jou swartbaar swaarder as

2kg weeg, dan kan jy dit begin reken as ‘n groot vis en bokant 3kg is dit beslis ‘n trofee-grootte vis.

Wenk van die maand: Indien jy met drie-angel hoeke hengel is dit nie ‘n goeie idee om die vis te “lipland� nie. As hy losruk, slaan die hoeke in jou vingers vas en is die hospitaal jou voorland. As the famous saying goes, ‘Africa is not for sissies’, well, neither is LBJs. In previous articles I have mentioned the term LBJs and after being asked a few times what it means, in this article I am going to enlighten you. >> Jo Dreyer BJs are in short, ‘little brown jobs’, it means, small brown birds. The term LBJ came to life when it was noted that many small to medium sized brownish birds looked very similar, save for few to very little, distinct characteristics. However even so, it is not always easy to see it. And if LW ZDVQÂśW FRQIXVLQJ HQRXJK WR ÂżQG PDQ\ similar small brown birds, their species are so very different! I for one, love to be challenged, especially in birding. There are so many different species of LBJs, namely; camaropteras, honey guides, honey ELUGV FKDWV VFUXE URELQV Ă€\FDWFKHUV seed-eaters, prinias and the most frustrating of all, larks, pipits, cisticolas and warblers, just to name a few. Yes, there are many out there! It was a simple bird to identify thanks to its lack RI D WDLO KRZHYHU DW ¿UVW , WKRXJKW LW ZDV a bird that had had a near escape from the clutches of a predator. Given my lack of bird knowledge at the time, we decided WKDW LW ZDV D WDZQ\ ÀDQNHG SULQLD ZLWK no tail. Well, it was almost as if the bird was insulted by our suggestion as to what it was, so it started singing its very distinctive song, it sounded nothing like D WDZQ\ ÀDQNHG SULQLD %RWK P\ IDWKHU in-law and I gave each other a look and immediately realised we were so very, very wrong! We quickly scrambled for our bird books and thankfully having had the Sasol e-Bird app on my phone we came to the deduction that is was in fact a long-billed crombec. This started my personal challenge of making a point of getting a photo or at least getting a very good look at the bird before making the decision on what it is. More often than not, I end up spending more time on a

LBJ regardless of whether I managed a SKRWR RU QRW EXW DP DOZD\V FRQ¿GHQW and sure when I move on, which makes me feel great. LBJs are so interesting, although many will argue. No one species has the same behaviour as the next, not HYHQ ÀLJKW SDWWHUQV )DDQVLH 3HDFRFN a well-known expert on LBJs, wrote a brilliant book that helps us with these little critters. We birders refer to it as our LBJ bible and for this very reason keep it close at hand when birding in the veld, grasslands, water edges and in areas that these birds inhabit. I was given one of these LBJ handbooks as a birthday gift and it goes along with every birding trip alongside a few other essential bird books. Believe it or not, we have LBJs on or by the water too, and in this article I show you the very vocal, very cute lesser swamp-warbler. 7KLV ZDUEOHU LV PRVWO\ LGHQWL¿HG by its distinctive call. Birding cannot put it in words, so I suggest you go onto YouTube and search for ‘Lesser Swamp Warbler by Greg Morgan’. There is no better video that gives its call any clearer; I also recognised that this person used the Sasol e-Bird App in the background to entice the bird to sing. Lesser swamp-warblers are not very shy and are often found feeding or calling in reed beds that are associated with water; it breeds widely on wetlands, estuaries, lakes, dams, rivers DQG Ă€RRGSODLQV , KDYH QRW EHHQ WR D dam where I did not encounter these birds; they are fairly common and are local migrants to Southern Africa except for large parts of Namibia and Botswana. They are fairly large, by LBJ standards, slender reed-warblers with a fairly distinct, whitish eyebrow stripe called a super cilium. It has a two-toned colouring of brown to white wash. The KHDG QHFN EDFN ZLQJV Ă€DQNV DQG tail are variably toned brown. It has a longish dark brown/pinkish bill, dark brown legs that appear blackish and a white wash neck, belly and rump. As you can see with the description, it

would most likely be for most warblers, and that is why the sound is key. The lesser swamp-warbler eats invertebrates and small frogs. Its nest LV D GHHS ¿UP ZDOOHG F\OLQGULFDO open cup, placed 1 meter above water, attached to vertical reed stems or bulrushes, although other aquatic stems may be used. The nest is built by using strips and shredded pieces of dry grass, sedge or reed blades that are wrapped around the supporting stems to form the handles and then loosely woven to form the cup nest’s walls. The nest is built by the female only while the male sings nearby. Clutch size is between 2 to 3 eggs which is incubated by both parents as well as both parents feed and tend to the young. I sincerely hope that I have enlightened you a bit more on the exciting birding of LBJs and hope that I have given you some hope that they are not that intimidating to identify. Just remember that when in doubt, listen to the sound. Most LBJs are very vocal and make the job of identifying them a ton easier. Good Luck! Happy Birding

Little Long Creek or a little bit of heaven, on the outskirts of the Drakensberg, and only 2½ hours’ drive from Johannesburg, come to Little Long Creek.
