TORREVIEJA council say they have blocked a concert featuring The Jacksons, which was scheduled to take place in early August, with organisers Heatwave Promotions stating that “everything is still going to plan.” Despite a big poster campaign across the Costa Blanca advertising the gig,Torrevieja council has vetoed the show at the Eras de la Sal on Friday August 9th, with councillor Fanny Serrano merely stating that the promoter “had already started to advertise the event”,

by Alex Trelinski

before gaining permission from Torrevieja council, who have refused to grant a license. The council did not say whether it was purely the early advertising that had angered them, or whether there were other factors in the licence refusal, since the Eras de la Sal has staged similar big name events in recent years, including the visit of Earth, Wind, and Fire. Heatwave Promotions countered on social media

this week that “Everything is going to plan for the concert in August”, and are still advertising it as taking place at the Eras de la Sal. If Torrevieja council stand firm, then a suitable alternative venue outside the municipality would have to be found. The Jackson brothers, namely Tito, Jermaine, Marlon and Jackie have dates scheduled for France and the UK in the next two months, ahead of the planned Torrevieja concert, which is also being marketed by organisations like Ticketmaster.

CHEAPER AND BETTER

NEW mobile phone tariffs making it cheaper call a European Union country from Spain have come into force this week, as the EU also announced that they will pay for free Wi-Fi connections in 11 municipalities in Alicante Province. The fresh rates on mobile calls and texts were introduced on Wednesday, and follows on from the scrapping of roaming charges between the EU member nations, including the UK, in 2017. The EU-ordered tariffs mean that calls cannot cost more than 19 cents per minute, whilst a text message is capped at six cents a minute. The prices though do not include IVA, as the tax rate is set by individual countries, but it has been estimating that costs to users will be slashed by

with councils getting up to 15 thousand euros each to install Wi-Fi networks in public places like parks, squares, museums, libraries, and health centres. Authorities from across Spain were invited to bid for the grants from a Europewide 120 million euro pot, and those accepted regionally are Alcoy, Altea, Beniarbeig,

Finestrat, Gata de Gorgos, Los Montesinos, Mutxamel, Onil, Orihuela, San Vicente del Raspeig and Villena . Overall, over 500 municipalities in Spain will get the Wi-Fi money and local councils will have up to 18 months to do the installation world to make sure they receive the EU hand-out.

SPAIN´S former PSOE Socialist party leader Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba, was buried on Saturday, after he died last on Friday aged 67 after suffering a stroke.. Rubalcaba was admitted to a hospital in Majadahonda near Madrid in a serious condition two days earlier. Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, who succeeded

by Alex Trelinski

Rubalcaba as party leader in 2014, immediately took to social media to mourn “a statesman (whose) whole life was dedicated to the service of his country”. Rubalcaba spent five years as Spain´s interior minister, and oversaw a major crackdown on the Basque terrorist group ETA. He also led the PSOE into the

2011 general election, where the party was defeated by the Partido Popular in a landslide. Sanchez led past and present prime minsters and various political leaders as well as King Felipe and ex monarch, King Carlos, in paying tribute at the lying in state of Rubalcaba´s coffin at the Congress building on Saturday, before a private funeral.

“Burundanga Queen” doped friend to fund habit

A court has heard how a 24 year old woman took a friend out for a drink then drugged her and forced her to take money from an ATM against her will. She used a drug known as Burundanga, a type of scopalamine that saps the will of those who are given it. After the incident the friend ended up in hospital, unaware of what had happened. Physicians were suspicious and tests showed she had been given the drug with an investigation leading to the arrest this week of her friend. The defendant had an internet gambling

addiction and the money was used to fund this habit. She is also suspected of being behind half a dozen similar incidents involving friends and family with cash and transfers up to €9,000 being taken while the victims were drugged. Investigators have found that she brought three bottles of scopalamine on the internet leading to her nickname in the media as the “Burundanga Queen”. Her lawyer has said that his client’s gambling addiction led to her actions.

Can I keep my ISA & Premium Bonds if I’m a Spanish Resident?

The short answer to this is ‘yes’.It is a question I get asked regularly and whilst the answer to this question is yes, the answer to ‘Should I keep them?’would bedifferent as ISA’s and Premium bonds (in fact the majority of NS&I products) are more hassle than they are worth when you leave the UK. Around two years ago, I met with a potential client who had been living in Spain for over 6 years. While living in the UK they had a financial adviser who had rightly maximised their annual ISA allowance meaning they were able to invest their savings tax free, and in addition to this they also had a modest

amount of Premium Bonds. The first thing I pointed out to the client is that NS&I(National Savings and Investments), are a state-owned savings bank in the UK and whilst you can keep these products open should you move overseas, you cannot pay into them and they no longer offer any tax benefits. This means that a £25 premium bondwinor a 0.5% annual gain would mean a costly trip to your Spanish accountant to declare the gains. To make matters worse, the Premium Bond prize pot has recently been reduced to a paltry 1.25% of the total holdings, with each £1 invested having a 30,000 to 1 chance of winning that

minimum prize of £25. Over the last 2 years she received just 0.5% from her ISA and 2 £25 prizes, all of which she had to declare to the Spanish tax authorities. She also had to put them on her overseas asset declaration, the Modelo 720. Her accountancy fees during that period were over 6 times her gains. Since the introduction of Common Reporting Standards, risking not declaring these gains is out of the question, as these would’ve been automatically reported to the Spanish tax authorities. During that meeting 2 years ago I had recommended to that potential client that we set up an investment plan designed for

Spanish residents – this one happened to be offered by The Prudential, a company very well known among British expats, although this is just one of several options available. Over the last 2 years the plan I recommended, which would’ve blended 2 funds, thePrufundCautious and Growth, would’ve returned over 10% after ALL fees. This is a very good return and results such as this will vary, but as these are fully compliant and legally recognized products for Spanish residents, her accountancy bill would’ve been zero. Alfaz man drowns in dog rescue attempt

A disabled Albir resident drowned in tragic circumstances last weekend, as he tried to rescue his two dogs from an irrigation pool. Exact details surrounding the accident remain unclear, as the victim was alone with his dogs at the time of the incident. Investigating officers understand that the dogs broke through the perimeter fence of the pool, which is situated adjacent to the municipal sports complex in the centre of L’Alfas del Pi. The man, a sixty one year old, Spanish national, who used two crutches whilst walking, had left

by Andy Mansell

his wife at home, to take his dogs for a walk, late last Sunday morning. Police, believe that the dogs, who were off their leashes, entered the water of the steep sided pool, which is of a brackish colour with limited visibility. The victim followed them into the pool, in an attempt to bring them out of water, but somehow, slipped below the surface. Around midday, two women walkers passing by the pool saw the dogs in difficulty and managed to bring them out of the water. However, they were

5

unaware that the owner of the animals had also been in the pond. The alarm was eventually raised by the wife of the victim, who became worried when he had not returned home by 15.00h. Local Police officers from L’Alfas del Pi, began a search of the local area, using information provided by the victim’s

spouse regarding his regular route. The officers, discovered the pair of crutches at the side of the pool, so immediately instigated a search by a team of divers, who found the body of the victim at the bottom of the pool around 19.45h. Reports issued by the police indicate that the perimeter fence was properly secured, leading them to believe the error was on the part of the victim. Unconfirmed reports in the local Spanish press suggested that neither of the two dogs survived their ordeal and also died.

CLOCKING IN by Alex Trelinski

EMPLOYERS are now required to have all their workers check in and out daily so as to keep a record of the exact hours they put in, and they could be fined up to €6,250 if they fail to do so. The move came into force last weekend, and it is estimated that in Spain, that staff work five point six million hours in overtime every week, but that nearly

three million of these hours are unpaid. The law was brought in by the minister for work and pensions Magdalena Valerio in conjunction with Spain’s two largest unions, the Labourers’ Commissions (CCOO) and General Workers’ Union (UGT). The idea is not to ‘police’ staff who arrive a few minutes late, but to end the long-running culture of unpaid extra hours.

boats its rescue craft had intercepted. Spain became the leading entry point to Europe last year, with 60 thousand migrants

arriving irregularly. The number arriving by sea peaked in October at 11,000 and fell to under 600 in March, according to the Interior Ministry.

ITV took the dramatic step on Wednesday to axe The Jeremy Kyle Show, after after the death of a guest who took part in the programme. Steven Dymond was found dead on May 9th,a week after filming the show, during which he took a lie detector test. ITV’s chief executive, Carolyn McCall, said the decision was a result of the “gravity of recent events”. The Jeremy Kyle Show, was the most popular programme in ITV’s daytime schedule, with an average of one million viewers and a 22 per cent audience share. The pre-recorded episode Mr Dymond took part in was based on the subject of infidelity. A member of the audience said that Mr Dymond “collapsed to the ground” and was “sobbing” when he failed the lie detector test. “Everyone at ITV’s thoughts and sympathies are with the family and friends of Steve Dymond”·. said Carolyn McCall.

SLIP SLIDING AWAY Skeleton rattle mystery solved

A 38-METRE-LONG slide built to connect two streets in a Costa del Sol resort was shut down less than 24 hours after opening, due to reports

A THREE-YEAR joint operation by the National Police and Guardia Civil with their Italian counterparts, has led to the seizure of two point seven of hashish in the southern region of Andalucia. Forty-four people have been arrested in various phases and over 70 thousand euros were seized, along with illegal firearms. Those arrested were mostly

suspected members of the Italian ‘Ndrangheta group and the Spanish “Los Castanas Clan”. They face several charges, including belonging to a criminal organisation, money laundering, bribery, possession of illegal weapons and possession of false documents.

ARCHAEOLOGISTS have solved the mystery of a skeleton and how it came to be buried with a modern looking baby rattle. The team unearthed the body in 2011 in a dig under a school playground in Palencia in the north of Spain where they believe that 250 Civil War victims were buried. At first they thought that the rattle had come from another source, but tests showed it was made of a plastic developed in 1870 so could date back to the war in the 1930s. They have now established that the corpse was that of Catalina Muñoz Arranz, a 37 year old mother of four who was executed for her political beliefs in 1936, shortly after the war broke out. At her trial the town’s mayor and two neighbours said they had seen her booing the Guardia Civil and supporting the communists and

by Simon Russell

she was later shot for “military rebellion” despite being a civilian and mother. The youngest of her four children was just nine months old and it is his rattle she took to her grave, concealed in the pocket of the apron she wore when she appeared before the firing squad. That child, Martin, is now 83 and still in good health after spending his life as a shepherd. Martin knew the tragic story of his mother’s death but obviously was too young to have any memory of her. However his 94 year old sister Lucia is also still alive and recalls Catalina and her arrest and subsequent execution. Both children and their siblings were raised by an aunt in the village of Cevico de la Torre where they both still live.

RICKY´S RIPOSTE

FAMOUS matador Morante de la Puebla, has been called a “dirty little psychopathic sequinned c---” by comedian Ricky Gervais, after killing a bull at a Sevilla bullfighting festival. Gervais made the comments on social media, with a video of the incident going viral. The footage showed the animal was badly wounded, and then before wiping blood off its face with a handkerchief, de la Puebla then killed it in front of an excited crowd.

The bull was pictured with four spiked ‘banderillas’ sticking out of its back before its life was ended by de la Puebla, who has been called the bullfighting counterpart of music star, Justin Bieber. The matador’s gesture was described as ‘malicious and perverse’ by an animal rights group, whilst bullfighting fans said Puebla was simply showing respect to the animal, as other famous matadors do.

Town so poor it can’t afford street lights THE small town of Vallada in Valencia has been named as having the highest level of debt in Spain. The municipality owes somewhere around €30 million, €10,000 for each of it’s 3,000 inhabitants or 10 times the current revenue of the town. Most of this arose after some unwise speculation which involved cashing in on the Americas Cup when it was in Valencia City by building a nautical themed industrial estate. The fact that Vallada is 70 kilometres inland

by Simon Russell

may, with hindsight, mean that this wasn’t the world’s best business proposition, something the town is still paying the price for. The current mayor is hopeful that the Valencian government will purchase the land which the unfinished industrial estate was due to be built on. In the meantime the council have to be so frugal that only a third of the street-lights can be used at any one time.

MIXED BLESSINGS

FATHERS who take advantage of Spain´s paternity leave system are less inclined to have children in the future, a new study has revealed.

The policy, introduced in 2007, initially proved extremely popular - with 55 per cent of men eligible for the benefit opting to take it in the first year alone. But economists studying the results of the initial programme said men who took paternity leave were then less likely to have children in the future. A study published in the Journal of Public Economics

by Alex Trelinski

suggested that two years on, parents who took advantage of the scheme were between seven and 15 per cent less likely to have children than those who did not. Under the system, new fathers are granted two weeks of fully paid leave, with the amount of leave covered by the programme doubled in 2017, and expanded to five

weeks in 2018. But researchers Lidia Farré of Barcelona University and Libertad González from the University of Pompeu Fabra believe having to spend more time with their children has made men more aware of the effort involved with bringing up youngsters. They say that fathers had ‘shifted their preferences from child quantity to quality’.

Political pledge for rescue pets ONE of the candidates for mayor of Valencia City has said that if she is elected she will put forward legislation to help people who adopt rescue pets. PSPV candidate Sandra Gomez made the announcement at last weekends “Valencia Petfriendly” fiesta, aimed at making the city a better place for our four legged friends. Ms Gomez has proposed that anyone who adopts a dog or other animal from a shelter should have their first visit to the veterinarian paid for by the

by Simon Russell

state “as way of a thank you for taking on an abandoned creature”. She has also proposed more green spaces for pets and better municipal

protection for animals. Other ideas include free meetings with professionals for education on the subject of animal welfare and looking after your pet.

Behave - or become a slave

A bar in the Murcian town of Cieza has caused controversy after putting up a sign saying badly behaved children would be sold as slaves. The tongue in cheek printed note in the bar window said “Every child that is not under the

supervision of his parents will become the property of bar and sold as a slave. No complaints accepted”. Some parents have protested but the bar owner said it was just a jokey way

of asking guardians to look after their kids and respect other patrons. While children here are certainly more welcome in bars and restaurants than in the UK, they are still expected to behave in a more or less reasonable fashion.

parking in Benidorm

Benidorm city council have reached an agreement with the owners of a vacant piece of land in a prime beachfront location of the resort, to utilise as extra free parking for the Summer months. The 3700 square metre parcel of landis the former site of the Las Terrazas Urbanisation, demolished five years ago after surveyorsreports revealed severe structural defects. Since the buildings were raized to the ground and the land was cleared of rubble, the vacant lot has become overgrown and an unsightly eyesore on benidorm’s otherwise well-kept

Mayor of Benidorm, Toni Perez , reported that “today an agreement has been signed with the owners of the site, which includes the temporary and free transfer in favour of the City Council, which will be responsible for adapting this plot as a parking , as well as its cleaning and maintenance.” Vehicle access to the parking lot, which is due to open within the next week, will be from, Avenida delMediterraneo, whilst pedestrians will be able to use

the same access and a further one leading directly to and from Levante beach. Contractors preparing the land for its future use, will use asphalt rescued from the recent modernisation and re-surfacing of Avenida Europa, to ensure ease of access for vehicles and pedestrians. Perez also thanked “the generosity of the community of owners of the building ‘Las Terrazas’ that gives this plot at zero cost to the City Council”, culminating “the work of many months of dialogue” between both parties.

Learn to climb like a Pro

Climbing boils down toa simple the volume of training like the Chris ratio of power to weight, producing Froome’s of this world. In professional as much power as possiblewith the cycling the grupetto always has a lowest body weight. The higher your group of sheltered watts, the faster riders riding at the back getting pulled along by the bunch more commonly called drafting, we all know the benefits of drafting on the flat well it also works on hills of up to 6% as well albeit to a lesser degree. Proper pacing is the most important aspect to climbing a hill, I have seen it many times, people setting off too fast. Their perceived exertion to start with is low but the effort catches you’llrise up a mountain, clearly, up with them, the power graph needs the best thing you can do to achieve to rise gradually, starting 20-30 this is to train hard and specifically watts below threshold and finishing keep your body fat percentage as low just above. Planning your perfect as possible. We all talk about climbing hill climb is as much about shrewd like a pro but in reality few of us planning as about heavy training. I areready to eschewthe finer things have seen many riders crack because in life or are capable of absorbing they didn’t know or they were fed duff

information as to the length and gradient of a climb and are unable to pace themselves or measure their effort correctly. Knowing your route before you set off should help you decide what to carry eg: if you are riding a steep climb and there is food and water at the summit, you would be mad to carry two full bottles of water, as a well hydrated person should get by on half a bottle. A full 750ml water bottle and cage weighs more than the whole frameset of a Pinarello F10, the same applies if a long climb finishes a ride, do you really need to lug 2 full bottles up it? If not then what you don’t need pour out onto the road or better still on a hot day pour it over your head. Food is another area that you can focus on when climbing, many people fill their pockets with gels, bars etc and are like glorified shopping trollies and much of the uneaten food it taken home. Reducing bike weight is an easy win, apart from bottles and food it is achieved through lighter wheelsets, lighter frames and lighter components. To move a kg of wheel takes more effort than anything else on your bike including you. The perfect way of using weight to your advantage is to do all your hill climbing training on a heavy steel or aluminium bike ie: mountain bike, thus making your training harder so when you do go onto your carbon bike it becomes easy. So whilst ceramic bearings are nifty they pale into insignificance compared to cutting out cheeseburgers and chips etc, which means that its better for both your pocket and your long term health to lose weight from your body rather than your bike. On a big climb like Alpe D Huez every

kg of weight costs you 45 seconds. You can spend a fortune losing a kg of your bike weight so its far easier to lose it off your body weight. Losing weight off your body and your bike is more efficient than new aerodynamics. So a good training session would involve finding a 3k long hill with a gradient of approx. 5-6%, cycling from the bottom to the top on 1 leg doing 50-100 reps on each leg then a recovery ride down, second climb spinning in a low gear all the way to the top, recovery down, third climb standing the whole way, recovery on the way down followed by one blast all the way to the top, this should take you approximately one hour. So if you do have an hour to spare this is a better training session than cycling as far as you can. Most importantly Enjoy your riding and training. All the best. Team “Cyclogical” meet every Tuesday and Thursday night’s at 5.30pm and Sunday mornings at 8am and cover between 90 and 120kms at a moderate to fast pace so if you fancy a challenge come along and join us. Looking to improve your fitness, riding ability and speed and also have a new group of friends to train with then why not come along and give it a try or call Gary on 637487377.

World News Human composting, a green way to go

Finger licking fraud

Nina Schoen, a supporter of human composting

THE problem of how to dispose of human remains has always been a sensitive one, with culture, religious beliefs, superstition and pure squeamishness all playing a part in the process around the world. One thing is for sure, it is something that will happen to us all one day, with Washington set to become the first US state to legalise a relatively new form of dispatch - human composting. As the name suggests, the body is allowed to break down naturally in special (organic) earth and then “reintroduced” to the land without the environmental damage caused by normal burial or cremation. Many environmentally conscious people think it is ironic that one of the most damaging processes for the planet happens after your death. For example Nina Schoen, 48, an activist for the change in the law said “I don’t want to leave a toxic footprint

by Simon Russell

when I go”. However the process may need a serious re-branding to convert some people, not least with the name. “I think the vision that some people have is that you throw Grandpa out in the backyard with the food scraps” said Sen. Jamie Pedersen who supports the bill. The process actually allows bodies to break down naturally and faster than “conventional” burial and with far less of a carbon footprint than cremation. Human nature means that many people are particularly averse to change in the sensitive area that is the burial process. Cremation took years to become accepted and religious belief in particular pushed against it until the church started confirming that the body is just a vessel for your soul, if you believe in that sort of thing.

Abortion ban divides US

THE US is a country where the Christian evangelical right are holding increasing sway on legislation, with probably the most graphic example being this week’s banning of abortion in Alabama. Never the most progressive of the US states, lawmakers in the Deep South region passed the law by 25 votes to six, not even allowing exemptions for rape or incest. Asked if a 12 year old girl who was raped by a relative and became pregnant would have to have the child, supporters said that was indeed the case. All of this is seen as the lead-up to a challenge of the famous 1973 Roe

by Simon Russell

versus Wade ruling which effectively legalised abortion in the US. A number of other states have already severely limited terminations using the “heartbeat law” where it is illegal when a foetal heartbeat can be detected. This is usually around six weeks and far too early for many women to realise they are pregnant. Supporters said “our bill says that a baby in a womb is a person” while detractors said “the bill criminalises doctors (who face up to 99 years in jail for carrying out the procedure) and is telling women what to do with their bodies”.

Hardly known for his religious convictions until he saw it as a path to the presidency, Donald Trump has now surrounded himself with evangelical Christians such as Vice President Mike Pence. 25% of Christians in the US now classify themselves as evangelicals, who take the word of the Bible literally, both Old and New Testament, from Noah’s Ark to the creation of the Earth by God in seven days 6,000 years ago. Unlike more mainstream Christianity they see it as their mission on Earth to convert people to their belief system, including by legislation if necessary such as the new laws in Alabama.

Pro-choice supporters protest the new bill.

ONE of the hottest stories on social media this week concerned a student who ate free at KFC every day for a year by pretending to be from the fast food chains head office. The cheeky scammer was travelling around South Africa, wearing a suit and arriving in a chauffeur driven limousine which was piloted by a friend who is actually a chauffeur - borrowing the vehicle of course. He had knocked up some form of ID backing up

his story and would then enter the outlet saying he needed to test for “the quality assurance of the food”. He would even go to the kitchen and take official looking notes while picking out his free samples. Staff said they were always on their best behaviour when the man arrived, afraid of falling out of favour with the important employee from head office. He has now been identified as a 27 year old student at the KwaZulu-Natal

University and police have confirmed he has been charged with crimes of obtaining goods by deception. Social media users offered the man their support with comments such as “Not all heroes wear capes” and simply “I salute you” both posted on Twitter. KFC has not commented, although many think that the free publicity may be worth the price of the hundreds of buckets of complimentary chicken consumed by the unnamed fraudster.

Advertising Feature The Spanish tax system is not easy to get your head round, with a lot of formfilling required by the authorities. Not surprisingly, everything has to be done correctly, and if you doń t declare your income, then you could be fined or even sent to prison! That s where Sun Lawyers can help out, ´ lawyer José María Lomax giving you guiding you through all the processes involved, with some advice in this article about taxation for non-residents in Spain. From the point of view of tax, a person is a Spanish resident when they live more than 183 days a year in Spanish territory, regardless of whether they have an official residence permit or not. A person is also classified as a Spanish resident when their centre of vital interests is in this country, like if their partner or a dependant child lives here, or if their main finances and investments are in Spain. If you do not meet any of these conditions, you are a non-resident, but you may still have to pay tax. The Spanish tax system operates through a self-assessment and that means taxes could need to be paid on properties, capital gains or income from freelance work. Unlike the UK, the tax year starts on January 1st and ends on December 31st, with the Tax Agency needing payments on

any assets you might have in Spain, as well as any part-time work you do here. José María Lomax says:- “Spain works with a progressive income tax system, which essentially means that the more you earn or own, the more you will have to pay” A non-resident in Spain from a European Union member state or a European Economic Area country will be charged an income tax rate of 19 per cent as a general rule, whilst outside those areas, the general

rate goes up to 24 per cent. “Everybody who has a Spanish property has to pay taxes”, says José María. “If a property is owned by more than one person, then each individual is treated as an independent taxpayer by the Tax Agency”. The amount of tax to be paid depends what main use is for the property. So if the home is for private use, the owner will have to pay an annual tax fee. That changes if the property is rented out, with another tax coming into play, and if it is split between a private residence and rental accommodation over a year, then the owner will have to pay the appropriate portion of each tax. If you are a non-resident who who rent out a property, then the law says that you need to pay tax on rental

income four times a year in January, April, July and October. Banking woes set to continue

A report by the Bank of Spain has identified the continued risk of litigation as the biggest risk to the banking sector. The report states that “legal risks have increased significantly in recent years and there is still a major potential for further litigation as procedures are reviewed.”

by Simon Russell

Banks have been caught up in a number of miss-selling and bad advice scandals in recent years, resulting in over 2 billion euros being paid in compensation. Sales of mortgages is highlighted as one potentially vulnerable area and the sector

is waiting for an EU ruling that may plunge them into a further round of compensation claims. Other risk factors include the level of debt that the economy and individuals have and a lack of a clear fiscal policy in a country that is regularly swinging between the left and right in government.

BANKER´S WARNING A senior Bank of England figure has warned more delay to Brexit could further slash business investment in the UK and damage the country´s longterm economic outlook. The Bank’s deputy governor, Ben Broadbent, said a delay beyond the new deadline of 31 October would harm Britain’s prospects as it faced the longest run of falling business investment since the second world war. Broadbent said the failure to chart a clear path before the original leave date of March had left firms in limbo over investment decisions and

major projects. He said business investment has already been “feeling the consequences” and cautioned that delaying Brexit further means prolonging the uncertainty for hamstrung companies and risks hitting the wider economy. The Bank’s forecasts issued last week showed the UK is heading for the longest run of falling investment in the postwar era, having already declined for four quarters in a row. If this continues

indefinitely, it could spell bad news for the economy, said Broadbent. “We rely on investment for making us collectively more productive and better off. That’s clear,” he said. But assuming a deal is struck, the Bank is forecasting a surge in pentup spending. “We think there would be quite a strong bounceback in investment,” he said. “These are not cancelled projects – it’s delay. If, as a business person, you’re assured that the worst thing is suddenly off the table, that has quite a powerful effect on your incentive to invest.”

Further expansion for Spain’s busiest port ALREADY Spain’s busiest port in terms of tonnage of cargo, Valencia is set to expand further, consolidating that position in the process. A new €1.2 billion investment is a combination of public and private sector cash and will be primarily used to expand the port’s

northern area, increasing its ca-pacity to five million containers, twice what it is now. As much of this is being built from scratch it will also incorporate the latest technology making the loading and unloading

process faster. The project is set to generate a further 7,000 jobs according to a forecast by the Generalitat. Last year Valencia port had container traffic totalling 77 million tons while Barcelona shifted 67 million tons.

Singapore Company, Singapore obtained independence from British rule in 1963 by joining Malaysia and other states that were leaving, and then opted to become fully independent in 1965. Since its separation from the other Asian nations, Singapore has become a world leader in virtually every respect – logistics, manufacturing, technology, tourism, trade and transport. It has been named as the words smartest city, safest country, a competitive city and the third least corrupt in the world. For the residents, the country has good education and healthcare, quality of life and life expectancy is high. S i n g ap ore Airport has been named one of the best in the world, as it should given that they also are home

t o Singapore airlines, renowned as one of the best airlines in the world. They operate frequent flights directly from Barcelona. On arrival at Singapore airport, you can take a taxi downtown (around 20€) or many hotels are linked on a shuttle bus route, which costs around 10€ pp. With typical Asian-Malaysian influences, eating out in Singapore is a treat for the tastebuds. There are Michelin starred restaurants as well as street hawkers offering modern Singapore food. A speciality is Laksa, a spicy soup with noodles and prawns and Chicken Rice, a national dish offered at all restaurants and street hawkers too. To taste some of the best street food, head to one of the many food markets that dot around the city. Do some research as some of these have been mentioned in food guides for outstanding quality, so well worth the visit. Like most of the Asian countries, accommodation is plentiful and available at all budget levels. But we couldn’t write this article without mentioning the iconic Raffles Hotel, famous home of the Singapore Sling. The hotel has

b e e n closed in recent months for a refurbishment, with a planned opening again in August of this year. We are sure that it will continue to offer its fantastic services as it has done for the last 130+ years! In terms of climate, Singapore maintains a year round temperature of around 30 degrees, however it does tend to be a bit wetter between the months of November and January. Theré s plenty to do once in the city – there are parks and museums to wander around, as well as the Singapore Botanic Gardens for those who love nature. Between the Singapore Zoo and the Night Safari, you can enjoy a River Safari, allowing you to get up close and personal with a variety of the animals, notably the two resident Pandá s as well as some 6000 other species that live here. A not-to-be-missed experience is that of Mount Faber – Singaporé s 2nd highest hill which can be reached by a fantastic cable car ride to the top, where you can enjoy fabulous views of the city as the sun goes down. At the top, there are plenty of bars and restaurants to help you to enjoy this magnificent scenery.

GET TOTAL PEACE OF MIND

If you buy a property in Spain, then getting home insurance is essential, which will protect you against all the unexpected events that may happen in, and outside, of your new home. If your property is mortgaged, then it is an obligation to take out insurance, which would cover damage to your real estate, as well as to any personal items inside. The civil liability guarantee in a policy is fundamental because it protects you and your family from any material or immaterial damage caused to a third party. Civil liability covers the acts of your

by Alex Trelinski

daily life inside and outside your home, so if a flowerpot falls off the balcony and hurts someone, then you are covered. Also any damage caused to a thirdparty by your home like a fire, and the amount insured by this guarantee depends on each contractIf you don’t have home insurance you must pay the costs of compensation, which is a very good reason to get some, even if the property is not mortgaged. The cost of home insurance varies according to different factors, namely

the amount insured; where the house is situated. If it is a primary or secondary residence; and whether it is rented. If it is an insurance for a second home which you use as a Spanish holiday home, and it not a new build property (in that case you could take the risk if you want to), then you need to make sure that you get insurance covering your property even if it is empty more than 180 days per year. Some insurers won’t cover the risk if the property remains empty, so it pays to shop around and to get the possible coverage possible.

The Sun Lawyers team had a chance to show off their expert knowledge on property purchases, relocation, together with other legal matters, regarding Spain. There was plenty of interest for the Costa Blanca, with Murcia & Almeria following closely

Our team found people were brushing aside any fears they may have and since the postponement of Brexit they were keen to move ahead to purchase in Spain. We at Sun Lawyers have always believed the traditional holiday/second home links to Spain coupled with the proximity and fabulous weather will continue to make Spain an attraction for UK buyers, now and for years to come. This was made clear from the hundreds of people’s comments who passed through our stand over the weekend. Potential property buyers kept us busy asking questions on all aspects of legal matters in Spain, and when would be the right time to buy. BALAERIC BOOM TIME Though areas like the Costa Blanca have some of the most significant property price increases in Spain, it´s the holiday islands of the Balaerics like Ibiza that are seeing prices climbing the fastest, at almost double the national average! The IMIE General Index shows an annual rate of increase of eight per cent across the islands, compared to a national price rise of just under four per cent. The plentiful supply of sandy shores and sunkissed climate on the Balaerics offer an idyllic setting for long-term stayers, who are fuelling the price market.

islands, like elsewhere, incur a price premium, with property values falling as you move further inland. Spring heralds the start of the buying season in the Balearics, as it does in many other parts of Spain. On islands such as Mallorca and Ibiza, the property market will be busy from now until the end of the summer. “Foreign buyers play a significant role in these island markets as they vie with locals to find the perfect property in the perfect location,” commented Marc Pritchard, Sales and In property terms, Marketing Director of coastal areas of the Taylor Wimpey España.

Motoring The Renegade is smaller than anything Jeep has made in recent years but with the explosion in popularity of small SUVs, it comes at a good time. With its chunky and rugged looks it stands out from the competition such as the Skoda Yeti and to some extent the MINI Countryman. Jeep is keen to highlight its off-road history, labelling the Renegade the only true SUV in the small crossover market. That said, most models sold will actually be two-wheel drive. There is plenty of classic Jeep influence in the styling with those recognisable circular headlights and the slotted grille. The interior quality is impressive as Jeep’s resurgence continues, and while this is a smaller SUV, it’s nonetheless refined with a solid and good quality feel. It’s comfortable too and an impressive car for motorway with little wind noise, despite the rather boxy shape. What that boxy shape does mean is plenty of interior space with good headroom, especially in the back. The wide opening doors are handy for parents fitting child seats and the interior feels robust enough to cope with everyday family life. It drives well with responsive steering and a surprising agility in corners. It has an enjoyable character that’s hard not to like and although the ride is overly firm and at times bouncy,

Jeep Renegade

the R e n eg a d e gets a lot right and very little wrong. Aside from the twowheel drive models there are also 4x4 versions which use an on-demand system, meaning they run in frontwheel drive the majority of the time, cutting down on fuel consumption.

With a tight turning circle and a raised driving position the Renegade has all the qualities needed to rival the current crop of crossovers and small SUVs. And while the looks might not be to everyone’s tastes (it looks better in the metal than in photographs)

the fact it has a Jeep badge gives it plenty of kudos and the standard of the interior helps make it feel a class above much of the competition. There’s a wide - somewhat baffling choice - of engines and gearboxes but the ones to go for are both twowheel drive. There’s the impressive 1.4 MultiAir petrol with 140PS,

available with a standard sixspeed manual or optional DDCT twin-clutch automatic. Alongside that we’d recommend the 1.6 MultiJet diesel with 120PS which is smooth yet punchy with good low down pulling power.

Young scooter driver “brain dead” after collision

QUESTIONS will once again be asked about the safety of electric scooters after a 20 year old man who was riding one has died after a collision with a motorbike. The incident happened during an overtaking manoeuvre on the road between Tavernes and Carpesa

by Simon Russell

(Valencia). The bike rider, who was also injured, tested positive for alcohol according to reports. The scooter rider was transferred to a hospital in Valencia after being treated at the scene but sadly died two days later. The

hospital said that an initial diagnosis had found him to be brain dead after the crash. The 38 year old motorcyclist was taken to La Fe Hospital with severe bruises and put on basic life support as a precautionary measure.

MAYOR ON TRIAL

BENFERRI´s mayor Luis Vicente Mateo is the subject of a workplace harassment case, with prosecutors calling for a 15 month jail term at a hearing that has started in the Orihuela courts. Mateo, of the socialist PSOE party, has been in office since 1999, and is accused of verbally abusing municipal secretary, Joaquin Botella, in a series of

incidents starting in 2011. Botella allegedly uncovered a series of irregular payments authorised by the mayor, Mateo also faces up to nine years of disqualification from public office in a separate case which is scheduled to start the the day after this month´s local elections.

ANYTHING GOES!

The mayor is scheduled to be at a Provincial Court hearing over prevarication in 2014 over alleged allowances and travel payments. Mateo originally won that long-running case back in the autumn, but it has been brought back to the higher court after an appeal from the prosecutor and the opposition Partido Popular.

THE STUDIO 32 Musical Theatre group´s production of the Cole Porter musical, Anything Goes, hits the stage of San Fulgencio´s Cardenal Belluga theatre in less than a fortnight´s time. BETTER ACCESS by Alex Trelinski

A LIFT is to be installed at Guardamar´s Santa Ana industrial estate as part of a 200 thousand euros project to improve access to people using the car park to go nearby amenities. The lift will accommodate six people, and along with a new set of stairs, it will link up with the estate´s car park, providing easier pedestrian access to the weekly market or local health centre.

The 200-space parking area has not been fully utilised due to the terrain, and Public Works councillor José María Hernández said that once everything is installed, it would take just five minutes to walk to Guardamar Town Hall. New signage, better lighting, and improved CCTV are all included in the project which is expected to be finished before the end of the year.

BEACH RIDDLE by Alex Trelinski MYSTERY surrounds the discovery of a middle-aged woman´s body on Torrevieja´s Los Náufragos beach last week. The Guardia Civil were called in after the lifeless corpse of a semi-clad female was spotted by people walking in the area. No documentation was found on her, and there were no signs of any physical assault, but it was later confirmed that her family had reported her missing earlier.

UROLOGY CONCERN

The

Postbag Not for the first time, Nigel Farage is running rings around the UK political establishment ahead of next week´s European elections. The message is simple, which is to leave the EU on WTO trade terms, and that´s it, whilst all the MPs just carry on rowing and splitting, with Labour and the Tories in a right old sorry mess. I don´t agree with Mr. Farage, but at least you get some plain speaking which is waffle-free, which I suspect is a large part of his appeal. Of course, if he got his way, there appears to be no plan whatsoever for what happens next. I still can´t forget the lies about all those lovely millions promised in the 2016 referendum that would go to the National Health Service. I can see those flying pigs soon making another appearance! Grant Bachelor, Gran Alacant. Last week´s story about rental company Goldcar getting a thumbs-down in a Which survey makes me wonder why people don´t a bit of basic research and shop around? One of the good things about the internet is that there is plenty to go at, and I´m fortunate that I have personal experience of two local car hire companies that treat their customers well, and which my family members use whenever they come over to visit. Sadly the big boys always seem to dominate the surveys(good or bad), yet the smaller and often familyrun firms don´t get shouted about from the rooftop, unless you do a bit of research or go on a personal recommendation. Harriet McKenzie, Torrevieja.

TORREVIEJA Hospital´s Urology department is badly under-staffed, according to the CSIF trade union, who claim that the facility has just one urologist. The union says that posts are not being filled in the department, with staff leaving for better working conditions. The department originally was designed to have five urologists. A CSIF spokesman said:- “A single urologist is simply not enough to cope with the number of elderly people who live in the area, as well as tourists”.

I´m not a massive football fan, but I do like to get involved when the nationals teams play. So, it was a novelty for me to genuinely get involved at my bar when the two Champions League matches were on last week. The Liverpool match was quite something, but then Spurs was as good, and it was nice to see a load of non-Tottenham fans cheering them on. Football gets too tribal for me, certainly with the money-loaded clubs, but my old days dating back to the seventies and eighties of shouting and cheering in a front TV screen made a surprisingly swift return last week. I hope the Liverpool and Spurs have a good time in Madrid next month, as I´ve already booked my seat at my local. Ken Lumsden, Benidorm.

Confusion

Confusion is a symptom which can have many causes. We can all relate to having episodes of ‘confusion’ such as going upstairs only to find that we have no idea what we are doing up there or being unable to remember a word that we really should know or somebody’s name! However, true confusion that has a medical cause can be very distressing for the confused person themselves and those around this person.

Well, at last, after weeks of me counting down to the biggest event on the camp calendar, Eurovision week is finally upon us. By the time you read this column, the two semi-finals will have been contested and the full line up for Saturday’s Eurovision Song Contest 2019 final will be in place. As per normal, this year’s Eurovision has had its fair share of controversy, not least because the event takes place in Tel Aviv, which has brought on calls for boycotts and lots of soul searching from performers and broadcasters. Even Madonna, who is rumoured to be performing live on the final, has broken her silence to silence her critics, saying, “I’ll never stop playing music to suit someone’s political agenda nor will I

stop speaking out against violations of human rights wherever in the world they may be.” Politics aside, I have to say, having watched the first semi final, I thought some of the songs that qualified for the final, were complete rubbish. My favourite moment was when the tiny nation of San Marino was put through, with their old fashioned euro anthem `Say Na NaNa`, by an old geezer called Serhat, who looks like a Benidorm Palace crooner from the 1970’s. Kitsch, camp and a throwback to a more innocent era, it’s the song I shall be rooting for on Saturday, as poor Michael Rice, the UK entrant, has about as much chance of winning as me.

Who gets the Darcey role? Shirley wants ‘sensational’

Strictly Come Dancing fans have been getting into a right old tizzy about who might replace the departing Darcey Bussell on the show’s judging panel this year, alongside head judge Shirley Ballas, Craig Revel Horwood and Bruno Tonioli. Rumoured names in the mix include Ashley Roberts, Alfonso Ribeiro, Ashley Banjo, Karen Hardy and Helen Richey. Zoe Ball, who presents the BBC 2 offshoot, Takes Two show, told her Sun Bizarre column readers that, she’d, “really like to see Anton [Du Beke] in that role, he’d be amazing.

But I have heard there is talk the new judge will be a woman.” Along those lines, Revel Horwood has put his weight behind Nicole Sherzinger as Darcey’s replacement. Strictly professional OtiMabuse has emerged as the bookies favourite, whilst Shirley Ballas, refuses to be drawn, only saying, “The BBC will pick someone who is qualified and fits in with the panel.‘There’s four of us so they have to gel well and pick someone who is sensational.” Oh, dear me, it’s all getting too exciting for words.

SHAKIRA CLEARED

COLUMBIAN singers Shakira and Carlos Vives have been cleared in a Madrid court this week of accusations they plagiarised part of their Grammy award-winning hit “La Bicicleta”. Livan Rafael Castellanos, a Cuban singer known as Livam, had alleged that the catchy tune copied parts of the melody and lyrics from his own song called “Yo te quiero tanto” (I love you so much). “There is no plagiarism whatsoever as claimed by the plaintiff in this lawsuit,” the

court said in its ruling. Music publisher MDRB had filed a complaint in 2017 in the Madrid court on behalf of Livam. In March, Shakira, 42, who lives in Barcelona with her partner footballer, Gerard Pique and their two sons, told the court she had “never heard” Livam’s song before. Vives, 57, also said he did not know the song or Livam. “La Bicicleta” -- or “The Bicycle” in English -- won two of the three biggest Grammy Latino awards for 2016,

including song and record of the year. There´s more legal worries though around the corner for Shakira, who is due to appear in court again next month for allegedly evading Spanish taxes of 14.5 million euros, a charge her lawyers deny. She is suspected of not paying taxes in Spain despite being a resident between 2011 and 2014, according to prosecutors. Shakira only transferred her official residency to Spain from the Bahamas in 2015.

Doris did it her way

Of all the tributes that poured in following the recent death of one of Hollywood’s greatest icons, Doris Day, at the ripe old age of 97, the one from ex Beatle Paul McCartney struck me the most. After decades of success from the late 1940’s into the early 70’s, Doris, who’d made her name playing fun, frothy wholesome roles with stars such as Cary Grant and James Garner, in movies like Pillow Talk, withdrew from the spotlight. Instead, she became a powerful, vocal activist for animal rights, which McCartney was quick to point out in his heartfelt tribute, “So sad to hear of Doris Day passing away,” he wrote on his personal blog. “She was a true star in more ways than one. I had the privilege of hanging out with her on a few occasions.” “Visiting her in her Californian home was like going to an animal sanctuary where her many dogs were taken care of in splendid style. She had a heart of gold and was a very funny lady who I shared many laughs with.” That’s a fabulous way to be remembered ….. RIP Doris.

Doris Day became a powerful animal rights activist.

Your task is to “drop” each of those letters into the appropriate square in each column, until the entire quote is revealed. All punctuation (commas, periods, dashes, etc.) has been removed. Good luck!

Pets & Wildlife Mistakes That First-Time Puppy Owners Should Avoid Having a canine companion can be life-changing; while it can make you a happier person, there are some responsibilities that come as a part of the package. If the idea of bringing home a puppy excites you, there are a lot of things that you need to do to gear up for the change. If you live alone, it can mean altering your lifestyle for this new companion and if you live with family, your loved ones would need to get involved as well. While a new puppy can be a great addition to your family, you need to avoid certain mistakes as a first-timer. Here are some common ones that you should be aware about. Not thinking before taking the plunge The worst mistake that first-time puppy owners do is not thinking before bringing one home. To start with, you need to discuss your intention with your family if you live with them. Ensure that they are all comfortable with the idea of having this canine member joining them. Additionally, they should be ready to share the responsibilities and joys of pet parenting with you. Also, make sure that your lifestyle allows you to take this responsibility. Those who travel a lot, for example, should consider the alternative arrangements for leaving their pet home when they are out of town.

make sure that the puppy will be able to blend in your lifestyle and you will be able to give it good care. There are some breeds that enjoy the company of children and you should choose them if you have children at home. Certain breeds require intensive physical exercise and are ideal for people with active lifestyle. Not getting the puppy healthtested before bringing it home The secret of being a happy pet parent greatly depends on your ability to find the perfect puppy that is cute and healthy. Not getting it health-tested before bringing it home is another mistake that you should absolutely avoid. Buying from a reliable source is important because these breeders take good care of dogs and their young ones are less susceptible to inherited health problems. Moreover, they do all the necessary health tests before selling the puppies.

Not training the puppy Not training the puppy is a mistake that a majority of people make. Just adopting an animal will not give you the expected benefits of being a pet owner. Training it makes the puppy social, keeps it safe and strengthens your bond with it. The objective of training goes much beyond making the pet obedient and disciplined. A professional trainer can help your Not choosing the right breed pet to learn life skills so that it can If you think that paying attention easily adapt with your lifestyle and to the animal’s breed is not be more of an asset rather than just a important, you are mistaken. Do not responsibility. choose one on the basis of looks but

Not paying attention to the initial toilet training When you raise a puppy for the first time, you may not know much about toilet training. This aspect needs a lot of attention to ease your life as a pet owner. Buying from a reputed breeder matters because it increases your chances of getting an animal that is toilet trained. On the other hand, be sure to make the puppy habitual of going out when it needs to relieve itself. Understand its toilet patterns and signals to train it right from the early weeks. Not doing things that it enjoys The activities that a puppy enjoys normally depend on its breed and upbringing and not giving it enough can make it lethargic. There are some breeds that love to be outdoors and indulge in physical activities while others prefer to cuddle indoors. Know these facts about your pet and give it plenty of space to do things that it likes. Feeding it the right kind of food and getting the right accessories that it can play with also matter. Ensure that it gets to be involved in the activities that keep it happy, healthy and stimulated. Raising a puppy is like raising a young child because it needs as much time, love and commitment as a little one does. If you do take the responsibility of being a pet parent, make sure that you have plenty of time to take it out, feed it well and play with it. This will make it a happy and healthy animal that gives and gets affection.

Quesada Bowls Club by Dee Stephenson A scorching week in the sun for our bowls players this week as temperatures soared towards 30 degrees! In the South Alicante Summer League Spitfire Division, there was a reversal of fortunes for Quesada Lancasters and Blenheims. Lancasters played San Miguel Cristians and unfortunately lost the match 11-0 points and 117-52 shots. While the Blenheims played San Miguel Moors and won the match 10-2 points and 93-66 shots. Well done Blenheims. Meanwhile in the VCL league Quesada Lions first match of the week was against Horadada resulting in a very creditable draw 6 points each with the Lions winning the

shots 92-80. In the second match of the week they played Greenlands and again had a very creditable draw 6 points each, this time winning the shots by just one 89-88. This puts them in second place in the league - keep up the good work Lions!! Members finished the week on a high with our presentation evening on Friday night at The Club, Quesada, with entertainment, a hot and cold buffet and lots of dancing. Congratulations to all of the winners of the Quesada Bowling Club Championships! There are no league matches for the next two weeks because of the Nationals competition 11-25th May which will

be played at Emerald Isle and Greenlands. Its promising to be an exciting competition so please go along and support the players if you can. Anyone interested in joining Quesada Bowls Club we welcome both new and experienced bowlers. We’re a friendly club with a mixture of competition, league and casual players. In addition to league matches and Club competitions we have our popular Saturday morning chicken drive which is open to visitors and we have free coaching for new members. So come along and see what we have to offer! Contact our membership secretary Angie Goddard newleaf2014@hotmail.co.uk

WALKING FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT ALGORFA 2019 Friday 10th May saw four teams compete for the 2019 Algorfa Trophy ; Esquina Park Rangers, Portobello, Lo Crispin and Tees Valley from England. Esquina Park Rangers, sponsored by Bar Esquina in Ciudad Quesada, came out on top, winning 2-0 against Tees Valley, 1-0 against Portobello and a 2-1 win against Lo Crispin. Runners-up were Portobello, Tees Valley then Lo Crispin. Man of the Tournament went to Esquina Park Ranger’s Stuart Beddows. A big thank you to the Mayor of Algorfa, Manuel Ros Rodes, for donating and presenting the trophies to the winning teams.

El Cid Bowls

CONGRATULATIONS to El Cid’s Halina and Paul Leeder WINNERS of the Trevor Wearn Memorial Rose Bowl Mixed Pairs. Fewer teams entered this year but there was plenty quality bowls on show.Stamina was tested to the limits with the finalists having played 54 ends of bowls in temperatures touching 31c! . Trophy presented by Club Captain Yvonne Briden who thanked the organizers, players and of course Coral Wearn for a successful

competition. Players and spectators enjoyed a drink and nibbles after the presentations. Photos below show the winners, the runners up Carole Donnellan and Dennis Birkett and our joint 3rd place teams Rita Lumby / Dave Forret and Debbie & Floyd Williams.

Las Ramblas Golf On Monday six teams of four players competed in a 6x6x6. For anyone unfamiliar with this format, it’s the best single score to count over the 1st six holes, the best two scores combined over the next six and finally the best three combined scores over the last six. In theory ‘par’ would be 72 points so for our winning team of John & Ellen Drakesmith, Mike Chapman and Maria Oldenziel to come in with 83 points was a great effort. Mind you, the runners up consisting of Nigel Price, Terry Field, Ron Phipps and Marleen Billen were only one point behind them! Wednesday and it was the ‘big one’, The President’s Day Trophy. The winner of this year’s covetedprize was our newest member Paul Brown. He took the title with a score of 43 points and

forced Mike Chapman into second spot with a very admirable 40 points. Third place went to Annemarie Weisheit who recorded 37 points. There were plenty of prizes for nearest the pins and ‘2’sand our thanks go to Dave Pulling for providing the beers and snacks at the half way stage. On Friday we played a ‘bowmaker’ which is the best three scores out of four to count on each hole (see this is educational as well!) There’s an old saying ‘beware of the injured golfer’ which was certainly the case today as Lindsay Forbes, who hasn’t been around for a couple of weeks, managed 5 birdies in his round! His team, which included Nick Campbell, Reg Akehurst and Maria Oldenziel took first place with an impressive 120 points.

MORGAN´S BACK IN PENALTY BUSINESS

England captain Eoin Morgan has been suspended for today´s(Friday) one-day international at Trent Bridge and fined 40 per cent of his match fee for a slow over-rate during the six-wicket win against Pakistan on Tuesday. They took almost

four hours to bowl their 50 overs in Bristol. It is Morgan’s second such offence within 12 months after England were guilty of a slow-over rate against the West Indies in February. England lead the five-match series 2-0.

World number one Novak Djokovic beat Stefanos Tsitsipas to win the Madrid Open for a third time on Sunday, and sent out a massive message that he´s back in form ahead of the second slam of the season in Paris later this month. The Serbian beat Rafael Nadal’s semi-final conqueror 6-3 6-4 in one hour 32 minutes to earn a record-equalling 33rd Masters 1000 title.

by Alex Trelinski

Djokovic’s 74th Tour title came after having made just one quarter-final in three tournaments since lifting the trophy at the Australian Open for a seventh time. Djokovic, who matched Nadal’s record for Masters 1000 triumphs, will hold all four Grand Slam titles if he goes on to claim a second French Open title next month.

MILESTONE BECKONS by Alex Trelinski

Spain´s Marc Marquez will be looking to record Honda´s 300th championship class race win in Sunday´s MotoGP race at Le Mans in France. Victory in the last outing at Jerez, saw the world champion return to his usual success after falling in the previous outing in Texas. He´s spent some time chilling out and going to F1 race in Barcelona last weekend and watching some football, ahead of a full return to the business at hand. The Spaniard won at Le Mans last year, but is not leaving anything to chance saying, “It can be a tricky GP, especially if the weather changes, so we must be ready for anything the opposition can throw at us”.

QUICK RETURN CHRIS

West Bromwich Albion plan to meet Chris Hughton next week to discuss the possibility of him becoming their manager. Hughton is out of work after surprisingly being sacked by Brighton on Monday, less than a day after the Premier League season finished, and the Baggies have identified the 60-year-old as a leading contender for their vacan-

cy. West Brom´s Championship play-off defeat to local rivals Aston Villa ended their season on Tuesday, and besides Hughton, ex-Fulham boss Slavisa Jokanovic is also said to be in the frame. Caretaker boss at the Hawthorns, Jimmy Shan, is said to have been promised a future coaching role at the club.

UNSTOPPABLE MERCEDES VONN THE PRINCESS Retired American Alpine skier Lindsey Vonn has won Spain’s Princess of Asturias award for sports. Lewis Hamilton won Sunday´s Spanish Grand Prix at Barcelona for a third consecutive year after overtaking Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas at the first turn, in what was another shut out of the Ferrari team. Although the Finnish driver began on pole position after going fastest in qualifying on Saturday, Hamilton sped past his championship rival just seconds into the fifth race of the season. Up until the weekend, the Mercedes pair had shared two race wins apiece in Australia, Bahrain, China and, last time out, in Azerbaijan. However, despite Bottas starting from a more advantageous position on the grid, the five-time world champi-

on shot past him almost immediately and never looked back. Hamilton was full of praise for his Mercedes as he celebrated his win in the immediate aftermath. “I have to put it down to this incredible team,” Hamil-

ton said. “This is history in the making, with five onetwo finishes in a row. I’m so happy for every one of them..” With the Dutch Grand Prix reinstated in the Spanish time slot for next year, Barcelona circuit officials

said that they are still optimistic of doing a new deal to keep F1 in Spain next year, albeit in a different slot in the race calendar. Next on this year´s schedule is the always eye-catching Monaco Grand Prix on Sunday May 26th.

since Manchester United managed it in 2009. Pep Guardiola’s side, victorious last season with a record 100-point haul, recovered from an early scare at Brighton to finish

A terrific finale to get into the Preferente Group Four play-offs beckons tomorrow, with three teams on the same number of points, but just two places on offer to join champions CF Intercity in the next crucial set of matches. Villajoyosa CF, CFI Alicante, and Hercules B all failed to win last weekend, with Villajoyosa (pictured pre-match) the most disappointed. as they failed to

gain a two point advantage on their rivals, as they were held to a one-one home draw by Callosa Deportiva. CFI lost two-nil at CD Almoradi, who will finish fifth, whilst Hercules went down by the same margin at UD Ilicitana. This Saturday late afternoon, all of the matches involving play-off issues will kick-off at the same time of

6.00 pm. Hercules have home advantage against Benidorm CD, who guaranteed their Preferente status with a twotwo result against the team below them, Aspe, who are relegated along with CD Torrevieja and Villena CF. Meanwhile Hercules´ rivals have tricky away fixtures, with Villajoyosa at Alicante University, and CFI Alicante travelling to UD Horadada.

It´s Spain versus France in the women´s the Champions League Final in the Hungarian capital of Budapest on Sunday(6.00 pm, live on BT Sport) as Barcelona, including England international Toni Duggan in their ranks, face the mighty Lyon. Lyon have dominated the women’s game over the past decade, reaching eight of the last 10 Champions League finals and winning the competition the last three years running. The French side can make it four in a row with a victory in Budapest, but Barca are out to make history as the Blaugranes - the first Spanish side to ever reach the final - bid to reign supreme in Hungary.
