CHEAPER AND BETTER

NEW mobile phone tariffs making it cheaper call a European Union country from Spain have come into force this week, as the EU also announced that they will pay for free Wi-Fi connections in 11 municipalities in Alicante Province. The fresh rates on mobile calls and texts were introduced on Wednesday, and follows on from the scrapping of roaming charges between the EU member nations, including the UK, in 2017. The EU-ordered tariffs mean that calls cannot cost more than 19 cents per minute, whilst a text message is capped at six cents a minute. The prices though do not include IVA, as the tax rate is set by individual countries, but it has been estimating that costs to users will be slashed by

around 70 per cent. Four non-EU countries, namely Switzerland, Iceland, Norway, and Liechtenstein will also get the new tariffs later this year, and assuming a Brexit The European Union´s good technology news has spread to 11 places in Alicante Province,

JACKSONS CONFUSION

TORREVIEJA council say they have blocked a concert featuring The Jacksons, which was scheduled to take place in early August, with organisers Heatwave Promotions stating that “everything is still going to plan.” Despite a big poster campaign across the Costa Blanca advertising the gig,Torrevieja council has vetoed the show at the Eras de la Sal on Friday August 9th, with councillor Fanny Serrano merely stating that the promoter “had already

by Alex Trelinski

started to advertise the event”, before gaining permission from Torrevieja council, who have refused to grant a license. The council did not say whether it was purely the early advertising that had angered them, or whether there were other factors in the licence refusal, since the Eras de la Sal has staged similar big name events in recent years, including the visit of Earth, Wind, and Fire. Heatwave Promotions countered on social media this

week that “Everything is going to plan for the concert in August”, and are still advertising it as taking place at the Eras de la Sal. If Torrevieja council stand firm, then a suitable alternative venue outside the municipality would have to be found. The Jackson brothers, namely Tito, Jermaine, Marlon and Jackie have dates scheduled for France and the UK in the next two months, ahead of the planned Torrevieja concert, which is also being marketed by organisations like Ticketmaster.

“Burundanga Queen” doped friend to fund habit

A court has heard how a 24 year old woman took a friend out for a drink then drugged her and forced her to take money from an ATM against her will. She used a drug known as Burundanga, a type of scopalamine that saps the will of those who are given it. After the incident the friend ended up in hospital, unaware of what had happened. Physicians were suspicious and tests showed she had been given the drug with an investigation leading to the arrest this week of her friend. The defendant had an internet gambling

by Simon Russell

addiction and the money was used to fund this habit. She is also suspected of being behind half a dozen similar incidents involving friends and family with cash and transfers up to €9,000 being taken while the victims were drugged. Investigators have found that she brought three bottles of scopalamine on the internet leading to her nickname in the media as the “Burundanga Queen”. Her lawyer has said that his client’s gambling addiction led to her actions.

Can I keep my ISA & Premium Bonds if I’m a Spanish Resident?

The short answer to this is ‘yes’.It is a question I get asked regularly and whilst the answer to this question is yes, the answer to ‘Should I keep them?’would bedifferent as ISA’s and Premium bonds (in fact the majority of NS&I products) are more hassle than they are worth when you leave the UK. Around two years ago, I met with a potential client who had been living in Spain for over 6 years. While living in the UK they had a financial adviser who had rightly maximised their annual ISA allowance meaning they were able to invest their savings tax free, and in addition to this they also had a modest

amount of Premium Bonds. The first thing I pointed out to the client is that NS&I(National Savings and Investments), are a state-owned savings bank in the UK and whilst you can keep these products open should you move overseas, you cannot pay into them and they no longer offer any tax benefits. This means that a £25 premium bondwinor a 0.5% annual gain would mean a costly trip to your Spanish accountant to declare the gains. To make matters worse, the Premium Bond prize pot has recently been reduced to a paltry 1.25% of the total holdings, with each £1 invested having a 30,000 to 1 chance of winning that

minimum prize of £25. Over the last 2 years she received just 0.5% from her ISA and 2 £25 prizes, all of which she had to declare to the Spanish tax authorities. She also had to put them on her overseas asset declaration, the Modelo 720. Her accountancy fees during that period were over 6 times her gains. Since the introduction of Common Reporting Standards, risking not declaring these gains is out of the question, as these would’ve been automatically reported to the Spanish tax authorities. During that meeting 2 years ago I had recommended to that potential client that we set up an investment plan designed for

Spanish residents – this one happened to be offered by The Prudential, a company very well known among British expats, although this is just one of several options available. Over the last 2 years the plan I recommended, which would’ve blended 2 funds, thePrufundCautious and Growth, would’ve returned over 10% after ALL fees. This is a very good return and results such as this will vary, but as these are fully compliant and legally recognized products for Spanish residents, her accountancy bill would’ve been zero. Pollen Street has now created a Group, which also includes Pure FX, that has transacted over £5.6 billion in foreign exchange over the last three years. Infinity International has been trading since 2007 and predominantly services UK and European businesses. They have transacted over £4 billion since inception. The acquisition will expand the Group’s offering to add a specialist corporate foreign exchange service, alongside their existing presence in the private client market through the Foreign Currency Direct and Pure FX brands. ITV took the dramatic step on Wednesday to axe The Jeremy Kyle Show, after after the death of a guest who took part in the programme. Steven Dymond was found dead on May 9th,a week after filming the show, during which he took a lie detector test. ITV’s chief executive, Carolyn McCall, said the decision was a result of the “gravity of recent events”. The Jeremy Kyle Show, was the most popular programme in ITV’s daytime schedule, with an average of one million viewers and a 22 per cent audience share. The broadcaster had initially suspended filming and transmission of the show, which has broadcast more than 3,000 episodes since it began in 2005. THE deadline for chefs wanting to take part in Alicante’s first Ciudad de Arroz cookery contest has now expired and the final list of contestants has an international feel about it. Chefs from the Lebanon and France are taking part as well from all over Spain and locally. 30 people applied and this will be whittled down to a final 10 for the big cook-off on 1 June at Plaza del

by Alex Trelinski

On Tuesday, the prime minister’s spokesman called Mr Dymond’s death “deeply concerning”. The pre-recorded episode Mr Dymond took part in was based on the subject of infidelity. A member of the audience said that Mr Dymond “collapsed to the ground” and was “sobbing” when he failed the lie detector test. “Everyone at ITV’s thoughts and sympathies are with the family and friends of Steve Dymond”·. said Carolyn McCall. “ITV will continue to work with Jeremy Kyle on other projects.”

Ayuntamiento. The contest is aimed at professional rather than amateur chefs and the standard is expected to be very high. As well as rice from Alicante province ingredients will be limited to water, saffron, prawns, squid, peppers and spices so the winner will need to be creative. The contest is scheduled to run from 11.30 am to 2.00pm at which stage the jury will declare a winner.

Stabbed to death over dog argument

A man on trial for murder appeared to confess to having killed a friend in an Alicante bar, although he then confused things further by saying he could not remember inflicting the actual killer blow, saying the man’s throat may have been slit by “an entity”. The victim, a friend of the 23 year old accused, was killed in a bar called the Orient Express II in February 2017 after receiving nine stab wounds, including the fatal slash to his throat. There were several

by Simon Russell

witnesses to the event and afterwards the accused cycled to his grandparents house, throwing the knife in a field on the way. Just 20 minutes later the Guardia Civil came to arrest him and he immediately took them to the discarded weapon which he confessed to using. He said that his friend had made his dog eat a stone, causing stomach problems for the animal which eventually died.

Worker “swallowed” by plastics machine

THE Guardia Civil have opened an investigation after a man was killed while operating a machine at a factory in Elda (Alicante). Witnesses said that he was cleaning the rollers when he fell and was “swallowed alive” by the equipment. His body was recovered

by Simon Russell

from the machine by the emergency ambulance crew who had been called as soon as the accident happened. The tragedy will be recorded as a workplace fatality and the usual protocols put into action.

Alfaz man drowns in dog rescue attempt

A disabled Albir resident drowned in tragic circumstances last weekend, as he tried to rescue his two dogs from an irrigation pool. Exact details surrounding the accident remain unclear, as the victim was alone with his dogs at the time of the incident. Investigating officers understand that the dogs broke through the perimeter fence of the pool, which is situated adjacent to the municipal sports complex in the centre of L’Alfas del Pi. The man, a sixty one year old, Spanish national, who used two crutches whilst walking, had left

by Andy Mansell

his wife at home, to take his dogs for a walk, late last Sunday morning. Police, believe that the dogs, who were off their leashes, entered the water of the steep sided pool, which is of a brackish colour with limited visibility. The victim followed them into the pool, in an attempt to bring them out of water, but somehow, slipped below the surface. Around midday, two women walkers passing by the pool saw the dogs in difficulty and managed to bring them out of the water. However, they were

5

FRIday 17TH May 2019

unaware that the owner of the animals had also been in the pond. The alarm was eventually raised by the wife of the victim, who became worried when he had not returned home by 15.00h. Local Police officers from L’Alfas del Pi, began a search of the local area, using information provided by the victim’s

spouse regarding his regular route. The officers, discovered the pair of crutches at the side of the pool, so immediately instigated a search by a team of divers, who found the body of the victim at the bottom of the pool around 19.45h. Reports issued by the police indicate that the perimeter fence was properly secured, leading them to believe the error was on the part of the victim. Unconfirmed reports in the local Spanish press suggested that neither of the two dogs survived their ordeal and also died.

CLOCKING IN by Alex Trelinski

EMPLOYERS are now required to have all their workers check in and out daily so as to keep a record of the exact hours they put in, and they could be fined up to €6,250 if they fail to do so. The move came into force last weekend, and it is estimated that in Spain, that staff work five point six million hours in overtime every week, but that nearly

three million of these hours are unpaid. The law was brought in by the minister for work and pensions Magdalena Valerio in conjunction with Spain’s two largest unions, the Labourers’ Commissions (CCOO) and General Workers’ Union (UGT). The idea is not to ‘police’ staff who arrive a few minutes late, but to end the long-running culture of unpaid extra hours.

Advertising Feature The Spanish tax system is not easy to get your head round, with a lot of formfilling required by the authorities. Not surprisingly, everything has to be done correctly, and if you doń t declare your income, then you could be fined or even sent to prison! That s where Sun Lawyers can help out, ´ lawyer José María Lomax giving you guiding you through all the processes involved, with some advice in this article about taxation for non-residents in Spain. From the point of view of tax, a person is a Spanish resident when they live more than 183 days a year in Spanish territory, regardless of whether they have an official residence permit or not. A person is also classified as a Spanish resident when their centre of vital interests is in this country, like if their partner or a dependant child lives here, or if their main finances and investments are in Spain. If you do not meet any of these conditions, you are a non-resident, but you may still have to pay tax. The Spanish tax system operates through a self-assessment and that means taxes could need to be paid on properties, capital gains or income from freelance work. Unlike the UK, the tax year starts on January 1st and ends on December 31st, with the Tax Agency needing payments on

any assets you might have in Spain, as well as any part-time work you do here. José María Lomax says:- “Spain works with a progressive income tax system, which essentially means that the more you earn or own, the more you will have to pay” A non-resident in Spain from a European Union member state or a European Economic Area country will be charged an income tax rate of 19 per cent as a general rule, whilst outside those areas, the general

rate goes up to 24 per cent. “Everybody who has a Spanish property has to pay taxes”, says José María. “If a property is owned by more than one person, then each individual is treated as an independent taxpayer by the Tax Agency”. The amount of tax to be paid depends what main use is for the property. So if the home is for private use, the owner will have to pay an annual tax fee. That changes if the property is rented out, with another tax coming into play, and if it is split between a private residence and rental accommodation over a year, then the owner will have to pay the appropriate portion of each tax. If you are a non-resident who who rent out a property, then the law says that you need to pay tax on rental

income four times a year in January, April, July and October. RICKY´S RIPOSTE

FAMOUS matador Morante de la Puebla, has been called a “dirty little psychopathic sequinned c---” by comedian Ricky Gervais, after killing a bull at a Sevilla bullfighting festival. Gervais made the comments on social media, with a video of the incident going viral. The footage showed the animal was badly wounded, and then before wiping blood off its face with a handkerchief, de la Puebla then killed it in front of an excited crowd.

The bull was pictured with four spiked ‘banderillas’ sticking out of its back before its life was ended by de la Puebla, who has been called the bullfighting counterpart of music star, Justin Bieber. The matador’s gesture was described as ‘malicious and perverse’ by an animal rights group, whilst bullfighting fans said Puebla was simply showing respect to the animal, as other famous matadors do.

Town so poor it can’t afford street lights THE small town of Vallada in Valencia has been named as having the highest level of debt in Spain. The municipality owes somewhere around €30 million, €10,000 for each of it’s 3,000 inhabitants or 10 times the current revenue of the town. Most of this arose after some unwise speculation which involved cashing in on the Americas Cup when it was in Valencia City by building a nautical themed industrial estate. The fact that Vallada is 70 kilometres inland

by Simon Russell

may, with hindsight, mean that this wasn’t the world’s best business proposition, something the town is still paying the price for. The current mayor is hopeful that the Valencian government will purchase the land which the unfinished industrial estate was due to be built on. In the meantime the council have to be so frugal that only a third of the street-lights can be used at any one time.

A 38-METRE-LONG slide built to connect two streets in a Costa del Sol resort was shut down less than 24 hours after opening, due to reports of multiple injuries. The stainless steel slide was dubbed the longest urban slide in Spain, and was built as a faster alternative to a 10-minute walk in Estepona. It was advertised by the local council as a method of travel for all ages. However, its gradient

of between 32 and 34 degrees raised concerns on social media, with videos circulating showing injuries and people shooting off the bottom of the slide. One social media user joked that “in Estepona they have already legalised euthanasia”, referring to the concerns over the safety of the ride. Another social media user tweeted photos of bruises and scrapes which she said was from going down the slide, adding that she “flew two metres”. Estepona council released a statement saying it had ordered a review of the slide, adding that the safety and approval of it had “been certified by the specialist installation company”. The statement also said the video on social media was an “isolated incident”, adding that the slide had been tested by “more than a thousand users” without any incidents.

Political pledge for rescue pets ONE of the candidates for mayor of Valencia City has said that if she is elected she will put forward legislation to help people who adopt rescue pets. PSPV candidate Sandra Gomez made the announcement at last weekends “Valencia Pet-friendly” fiesta, aimed at making the city a better place for our four legged friends. Ms Gomez has proposed that anyone who adopts a dog or other

animal from a shelter should have their first visit to the veterinarian paid for by the state “as way of a thank you for taking on an abandoned creature”. She has also proposed more green spaces for pets and better municipal protection for animals. Other ideas include free meetings with professionals for education on the subject of animal welfare and looking after your pet.

ARCHAEOLOGISTS have solved the mystery of a skeleton and how it came to be buried with a modern looking baby rattle. The team unearthed the body in 2011 in a dig under a school playground in Palencia in the north of Spain where they believe that 250 Civil War victims were buried. At first they thought that the rattle had come from another source, but tests showed it was made of a plastic developed in 1870 so could date back to the war in the 1930s. They have now established that the corpse was that of Catalina Muñoz Arranz, a 37 year old mother of four who was executed for her political beliefs in 1936, shortly after the war broke out. At her trial the town’s mayor and two neighbours said they had seen her booing the Guardia Civil and supporting the communists and

by Simon Russell

she was later shot for “military rebellion” despite being a civilian and mother. The youngest of her four children was just nine months old and it is his rattle she took to her grave, concealed in the pocket of the apron she wore when she appeared before the firing squad. That child, Martin, is now 83 and still in good health after spending his life as a shepherd. Martin knew the tragic story of his mother’s death but obviously was too young to have any memory of her. However his 94 year old sister Lucia is also still alive and recalls Catalina and her arrest and subsequent execution. Both children and their siblings were raised by an aunt in the village of Cevico de la Torre where they both still live.

MIXED BLESSINGS

FATHERS who take advantage of Spain´s paternity leave system are less inclined to have children in the future, a new study has revealed.

The policy, introduced in 2007, initially proved extremely popular - with 55 per cent of men eligible for the benefit opting to take it in the first year alone. But economists studying the results of the initial programme said men who took paternity leave were then less likely to have children in the future. A study published in the Journal of Public Economics

by Alex Trelinski

suggested that two years on, parents who took advantage of the scheme were between seven and 15 per cent less likely to have children than those who did not. Under the system, new fathers are granted two weeks of fully paid leave, with the amount of leave covered by the programme doubled in 2017, and expanded to five

weeks in 2018. But researchers Lidia Farré of Barcelona University and Libertad González from the University of Pompeu Fabra believe having to spend more time with their children has made men more aware of the effort involved with bringing up youngsters. They say that fathers had ‘shifted their preferences from child quantity to quality’.

After jumping down from the vehicle the man, walked up and down, shouting for several minutes, before three local police officers arrived on the scene. After obtaining a warrant to search the premises, during the subsequent raid, the officers uncovered more than 700 marijuana plants and almost five kilos of dried substance prepared for sale. They also seized 38 fans, 125 halogen spotlights, nine humidifiers, 5 extractors, three radiators, bags of soil and three large trays used to dry the buds. The agents, arrested three males aged between 29 and 46, from the United Kingdom and Albania, on charges of crimes against public health and being involved in the cultivation, drying, cutting and distribution of marijuana in Benidorm.

Benidorm city council have reached an agreement with the owners of a vacant piece of land in a prime beachfront location of the resort, to utilise as extra free parking for the Summer months. The 3700 square metre parcel of landis the former site of the Las Terrazas Urbanisation, demolished five years ago after surveyorsreports revealed severe structural defects. Mayor of Benidorm, Toni Perez , reported that “today an agreement has been signed with the owners of the site, which includes the temporary and free transfer in favour of the City Council, which will be responsible for adapting this plot as a parking , as well as its cleaning and maintenance.” Vehicle access to the parking lot, which is due to open within the next week, will be from, Avenida delMediterraneo, whilst pedestrians will be able to use

the same access and a further one leading directly to and from Levante beach. Contractors preparing the land for its future use, will use asphalt rescued from the recent modernisation and re-surfacing of Avenida Europa, to ensure ease of access for vehicles and pedestrians. Perez also thanked “the generosity of the community of owners of the building ‘Las Terrazas’ that gives this plot at zero cost to the City Council”, culminating “the work of many months of dialogue” between both parties.

Benidorm Pink Weekend is back

Benidorm old town will be awash in a sea of pink once again, later this month, when the annual Pink Weekend hits town to herald the start of Summer. Widely accepted as Benidorm Pride’s outrageous,

flirtatious and totally effervescent younger sister, this year’s event runs from Thursday 23rd to Sunday 26th May. Pink Weekend originally

began as a way of filling in the gap between the resort’s enormously popular Gay Pride festivals, each September. However, it has now grown to become one of the most eagerly anticipated fiestas on the Benidorm calendar, loved both by locals and the hordes of visitors, who plan their holidays around the weekend. Every year, the free event gets bigger and the 2019 weekend is no exception, with four, fun packed days of themed parties on offer, all

centred around the spectacular Mirador del Castillo headland, guaranteeing, sensational ‘selfie’ views both day and night. The rose coloured weekend begins on Thursday may 23rd, with loads of special ‘pink’ themed events in the colourfully decorated old town bars. On Friday, the action heads up to the beautiful mirador, set in the resort’s most privileged position, with the Benidorm All Stars Party, featuring the best of local talent, including

FRIday 17TH May 2019 vocalists, dancers, Dj’s, drag artists and tributes from 19.00h to 01.00h. The Mirador del Castillo is also the setting for Saturday’s double header, beginning at 17.00h, with a Sunset Party, designed to get your night off to a cool, groovy start. At 21.00h, it’s time to travel in reverse, as the ‘Back to the 90’s’ Party takes over the decks, featuring guest dj’s and vocalists and hot tunes from the decade that gave us some of the best dance anthems of all time. And, if all that

wasn’t enough, for the first time this year, a Sunday evening, Closing Party has been added to complete the weekend line up. Taking place in a spectacular setting at the Planta 20 Lounge and Bar, high up at the Madeira Centro Hotel from 19.00h, funky tunes from top dj’s will send your weekend off to pink heaven. So, remember the dates, pick up your favourite pink attire and prepare to kickstart your Summer fun in the pinkest possible way at Benidorm Pink Weekend.

Banking woes set to continue A report by the Bank of Spain has identified the continued risk of litigation as the biggest risk to the banking sector. The report states that “legal risks have increased significantly in recent years and there is still a major potential for further litigation as procedures are reviewed.” Banks have

by Simon Russell

been caught up in a number of miss-selling and bad advice scandals in recent years, resulting in over 2 billion euros being paid in compensation. Sales of mortgages is highlighted as one potentially vulnerable area and the sector

is waiting for an EU ruling that may plunge them into a further round of compensation claims. Other risk factors include the level of debt that the economy and individuals have and a lack of a clear fiscal policy in a country that is regularly swinging between the left and right in government.

Branches threatened SANTANDER Bank plans to close 1,150 branches in Spain and cut just over 3,700 jobs, or around 11 per cent of its workforce, according to the union Comisiones Obreras on Tuesday. Santander declined to comment.

“This reduction will mainly affect the commercial network and its intermediate support structures, although it will also affect the principal offices,” Comisiones claimed.

The measures are part of Santander’s wider strategy to focus on cost savings in Europe while pursuing higher profits on offer in Latin America. Last month, Santander said it was looking a billion euros of savings in Europe.

BANKER´S WARNING

A senior Bank of England figure has warned more delay to Brexit could further slash business investment in the UK and damage the country´s long-term economic outlook. The Bank’s deputy governor, Ben Broadbent, said a delay beyond the new deadline of 31 October would harm Britain’s prospects as it faced the longest run of falling business investment since the second world war. Broadbent said the failure to chart a clear path before the original leave date of March had left firms in limbo over investment decisions and major projects. He said business investment has already been “feeling the consequences” and cautioned that delaying Brexit further means prolonging the uncertainty for hamstrung companies and risks hitting the wider

economy. The Bank’s forecasts issued last week showed the UK is heading for the longest run of falling investment in the postwar era, having already declined for four quarters in a row. If this continues indefinitely, it could spell bad news for the economy, said Broadbent. “We rely on investment for making us collectively more

productive and better off. That’s clear,” he said. But assuming a deal is struck, the Bank is forecasting a surge in pentup spending. “We think there would be quite a strong bounceback in investment,” he said. “These are not cancelled projects – it’s delay. If, as a business person, you’re assured that the worst thing is suddenly off the table, that has quite a powerful effect on your incentive to invest.”

Further expansion for Spain’s busiest port ALREADY Spain’s busiest port in terms of tonnage of cargo, Valencia is set to expand further, con-solidating that position in the process. A new €1.2 billion investment is a combination of public and private sector cash and will be primarily used to expand the port’s northern area, increasing

its ca-pacity to five million containers, twice what it is now. As much of this is being built from scratch it will also incorporate the latest technology making the loading and unloading process faster. The project is set to generate a further

Sleep at night investing?

I often hear from my clients, “I am not being greedy, I just want to see a decent return on my money without taking too much risk”. In other words, I do not want to see large fluctuations and have any stock market shocks with my investments in the future. Most people want to see a return higher than inflation and higher than the banks can provide, and risk means different things to different people and we are all well aware of that. It is simply not possible to invest without taking some degree of risk. However, there are people who simply cannot cope with the ups and downs of the share markets and simply feel better off staying with the bank, even if that means watching their money get eaten by inflation.

This is usually because they may feel that any investment product is complicated, difficult to understand and a potentially rocky ride, so somewhat scary. Ultimately they are cautious investors.

So is there something that can alleviate these concerns? You may remember life companies in the UK offering products that use funds with a smoothing effect of returns? Returns that provide the potential to beat inflation and interest rates over the medium term. Well, even if you don’t know or remember then let me explain. There is a simple investment solution offered by a well-known UK life company and it´s available to UK Expats here in Spain. The life company balance the investments in such a way that the risk is kept to a minimum. Investors in the fund can then feel comfort in knowing that if the

17

share markets take a tumble it is likely they will feel a ripple rather than a large wave, therefore allowing more peace of mind. We cannot predict that these funds will never go down in value, and of course, past performance is by no means a prediction of future performance, however, we can say that this extremely well known UK life company has a good pedigree of past successes. by Yvonne Hollywood, Worldwide Horizons A small island-nation located on the southern tip of Malaysia, it is made up of one large island (Mainland Singapore) and 62 islets around it. Founded as an outpost of the British East India

Singapore Company, Singapore obtained independence from British rule in 1963 by joining Malaysia and other states that were leaving, and then opted to become fully independent in 1965. Since its separation from the other Asian nations, Singapore has become a world leader in virtually every respect – logistics, manufacturing, technology, tourism, trade and transport. It has been named as the words smartest city, safest country, a competitive city and the third least corrupt in the world. For the residents, the country has good education and healthcare, quality of life and life expectancy is high. S i n g ap ore Airport has been named one of the best in the world, as it should given that they also are home

t o Singapore airlines, renowned as one of the best airlines in the world. They operate frequent flights directly from Barcelona. On arrival at Singapore airport, you can take a taxi downtown (around 20€) or many hotels are linked on a shuttle bus route, which costs around 10€ pp. With typical Asian-Malaysian influences, eating out in Singapore is a treat for the tastebuds. There are Michelin starred restaurants as well as street hawkers offering modern Singapore food. A speciality is Laksa, a spicy soup with noodles and prawns and Chicken Rice, a national dish offered at all restaurants and street hawkers too. To taste some of the best street food, head to one of the many food markets that dot around the city. Do some research as some of these have been mentioned in food guides for outstanding quality, so well worth the visit. Like most of the Asian countries, accommodation is plentiful and available at all budget levels. But we couldn’t write this article without mentioning the iconic Raffles Hotel, famous home of the Singapore Sling. The hotel has

b e e n closed in recent months for a refurbishment, with a planned opening again in August of this year. We are sure that it will continue to offer its fantastic services as it has done for the last 130+ years! In terms of climate, Singapore maintains a year round temperature of around 30 degrees, however it does tend to be a bit wetter between the months of November and January. Theré s plenty to do once in the city – there are parks and museums to wander around, as well as the Singapore Botanic Gardens for those who love nature. Between the Singapore Zoo and the Night Safari, you can enjoy a River Safari, allowing you to get up close and personal with a variety of the animals, notably the two resident Pandá s as well as some 6000 other species that live here. A not-to-be-missed experience is that of Mount Faber – Singaporé s 2nd highest hill which can be reached by a fantastic cable car ride to the top, where you can enjoy fabulous views of the city as the sun goes down. At the top, there are plenty of bars and restaurants to help you to enjoy this magnificent scenery.

Two fun reasons to visit the village of Cassel in Flanders, France

The village of Cassel in France’s Nord department region with its cobbled streets, quiet atmosphere and traditional Flemish buildings feels like a romantic relic of a bygone era. Though it was originally created by the Romans on top of a prominent hill (Mont Cassel) overlooking the lush rolling pastures of French Flanders, the rulers of Flanders picked up the pieces after the demise of the Roman Empire and the Flemish influence is still evident. Though many a holiday-maker has driven or worse – bypassed altogether – Cassel on their way to Lille or Paris, we offer two fantastic reasons to stop and stare. Musée de Flandre Musée de Flandre (Flanders Museum) is located in a stunning 17th century Flemish building on the main street of Cassel, with foundations dating back to the medieval period. You will find some of the finest Flemish artworks and paintings in the world here. Currently they are hosting a special exhibition of Fêtes et Kermesses au temps des Brueghel until July 14th (€6 adult entry). Pieter Bruegel the Elder (also

spelt “Brueghel”) is renowned for his Dutch and Flemish Renaissance paintings. Many of them feature imaginative, joyful and sometimes barmy renditions of parties and celebrations. Sadly his own works are not here but you can see them in The Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. However, the good news is that works based on his paintings are here in abundance. Eleven room showcase these and as well as artworks created by his two sons, Jan I and Pieter II. Most of the paintings depict the poorest of society, and they provide an important social commentary on life in the Renaissance period. More than 100 paintings and engravings depict fairs, weddings and other community events that took place in 16th and 17th strange depictions. Almost every painting contains a stupidly-dressed “fool”, who is a visual representation of excess and naughtiness. Men projectile vomit after glugging too much mead, couples embrace passionately behind trees and brawlers throw punches with gay abandon. To top the entertainment off are the amusing holographic jesters

that pop-up while stories of peasant parties during the Baroque period unfold. Amid all this are numerous depictions of brides: sobbing brides, bored brides and drunken brides all make an appearance. There is also an interesting selection of sartorial hat choices including a beehive, a crown made of vegetables and a hat that looks like a butter churner. One inebriated bride even wears a colander on her head as her terrified husband looks on with pure terror. My personal favourite was ”Village festival” by Jan I Bruegel, which forms part of Queen Elizabeth II’s Royal Collection. The painting contains an incredible level of detail and expression, portraying dozens of “Lilliputian” characters dancing in celebration. Whether or not you are a Bruegel fan, the exhibition is brilliantly curated and great fun. The exhibition is family friendly and we saw several groups of children who genuinely seemed to be enjoying themselves. The gardens at Mont des Récollets The Jardins du Mont des Récollets (a 5-minute drive from Musée de Flandre) are part of an old, converted farm and will open to the public

on 10 April 2019 (€6 adult entry). As with any typical Flemish farm, you enter the gardens though the orchard, and first impressions are of a small, lovingly tended garden. However, as you weave through various hedges, nooks and corridors a magnificent garden with more and 20 themed “rooms” appears. These include the “embroidery room” with hedges designed to look like a knitting pattern and the “Berlingots room” with hedges groomed to look like sweets. The farmhouse is almost as idyllic as the gardens, and overlooks the stunning Flemish countryside. It has since been converted into a restaurant filled with old pots and pans and hand-made wooden tables and chairs. This is a perfect spot for a traditional Flemish lunch or a cup of tea before you move on. Getting there You can take your car on Eurotunnel Le Shuttle from Folkestone to Calais for as little as £24 each way (based on a day trip). The journey time can be as little as 55 minutes. Once you arrive at Calais, the journey to Cassel takes approximately one and a half hours.

THE WORST OF BRITAIN I get very worried about politicians telling the media what to do, even though it is an MP who has been candid about his mental health issues, calling for ITV´s Jeremy Kyle show to be permanently axed. The Kyle show for me depicts everything that is bad about Britain, but as a lifelong broadcaster and

journalist, I back the right of broadcasters to transmit anything, so long as it is within the law. Charles Walker MP told the BBC it would be “extremely sensible” if ITV said “this has gone far enough” adding that it was “a watershed moment”, which saw the network suspend all transmissions

after the death of a guest shortly after filming. UK tabloids have named him as Steve Dymond, who failed the infamous lie detector test which showed he was unfaithful to his girlfriend. Reports say his friends fear he took his own life earlier this month.

Human composting, a green way to go

World News

Finger licking fraud

Nina Schoen, a supporter of human composting

THE problem of how to dispose of human remains has always been a sensitive one, with culture, religious beliefs, superstition and pure squeamishness all playing a part in the process around the world. One thing is for sure, it is something that will happen to us all one day, with Washington set to become the first US state to legalise a relatively new form of dispatch - human composting. As the name suggests, the body is allowed to break down naturally in special (organic) earth and then “reintroduced” to the land without the environmental damage caused by normal burial or cremation. Many environmentally conscious people think it is ironic that one of the most damaging processes for the planet happens after your death. For example Nina Schoen, 48, an activist for the change in the law said “I don’t want to leave a toxic footprint

when I go”. However the process may need a serious re-branding to convert some people, not least with the name. “I think the vision that some people have is that you throw Grandpa out in the backyard with the food scraps” said Sen. Jamie Pedersen who supports the bill. The process actually allows bodies to break down naturally and faster than “conventional” burial and with far less of a carbon footprint than cremation. Human nature means that many people are particularly averse to change in the sensitive area that is the burial process. Cremation took years to become accepted and religious belief in particular pushed against it until the church started confirming that the body is just a vessel for your soul, if you believe in that sort of thing.

Abortion ban divides US

THE US is a country where the Christian evangelical right are holding increasing sway on legislation, with probably the most graphic example being this week’s banning of abortion in Alabama. Never the most progressive of the US states, lawmakers in the Deep South region passed the law by 25 votes to six, not even allowing exemptions for rape or incest. Asked if a 12 year old girl who was raped by a relative and became pregnant would have to have the child, supporters said that was indeed the case. All of this is seen as the lead-up to a challenge of the famous 1973 Roe

by Simon Russell

versus Wade ruling which effectively legalised abortion in the US. A number of other states have already severely limited terminations using the “heartbeat law” where it is illegal when a foetal heartbeat can be detected. This is usually around six weeks and far too early for many women to realise they are pregnant. Supporters said “our bill says that a baby in a womb is a person” while detractors said “the bill criminalises doctors (who face up to 99 years in jail for carrying out the procedure) and is telling women what to do with their bodies”.

Hardly known for his religious convictions until he saw it as a path to the presidency, Donald Trump has now surrounded himself with evangelical Christians such as Vice President Mike Pence. 25% of Christians in the US now classify themselves as evangelicals, who take the word of the Bible literally, both Old and New Testament, from Noah’s Ark to the creation of the Earth by God in seven days 6,000 years ago. Unlike more mainstream Christianity they see it as their mission on Earth to convert people to their belief system, including by legislation if necessary such as the new laws in Alabama.

Pro-choice supporters protest the new bill.

ONE of the hottest stories on social media this week concerned a student who ate free at KFC every day for a year by pretending to be from the fast food chains head office. The cheeky scammer was travelling around South Africa, wearing a suit and arriving in a chauffeur driven limousine which was piloted by a friend who is actually a chauffeur - borrowing the vehicle of course. He had knocked up some form of ID backing up

his story and would then enter the outlet saying he needed to test for “the quality assurance of the food”. He would even go to the kitchen and take official looking notes while picking out his free samples. Staff said they were always on their best behaviour when the man arrived, afraid of falling out of favour with the important employee from head office. He has now been identified as a 27 year old student at the KwaZulu-Natal

University and police have confirmed he has been charged with crimes of obtaining goods by deception. Social media users offered the man their support with comments such as “Not all heroes wear capes” and simply “I salute you” both posted on Twitter. KFC has not commented, although many think that the free publicity may be worth the price of the hundreds of buckets of complimentary chicken consumed by the unnamed fraudster.

The

Postbag Not for the first time, Nigel Farage is running rings around the UK political establishment ahead of next week´s European elections. The message is simple, which is to leave the EU on WTO trade terms, and that´s it, whilst all the MPs just carry on rowing and splitting, with Labour and the Tories in a right old sorry mess. I don´t agree with Mr. Farage, but at least you get some plain speaking which is waffle-free, which I suspect is a large part of his appeal. Of course, if he got his way, there appears to be no plan whatsoever for what happens next. I still can´t forget the lies about all those lovely millions promised in the 2016 referendum that would go to the National Health Service. I can see those flying pigs soon making another appearance! Last week´s story about rental company Goldcar getting a thumbs-down in a Which survey makes me wonder why people don´t a bit of basic research and shop around? One of the good things about the internet is that there is plenty to go at, and I´m fortunate that I have personal experience of two local car hire companies that treat their customers well, and which my family members use whenever they come over to visit. Sadly the big boys always seem to dominate the surveys(good or bad), yet the smaller and often family-run firms don´t get shouted about from the rooftop, unless you do a bit of research or go on a personal recommendation. A shortage of the special gunpowder commonly used at the regions Moors and Christians festivities means that many towns are facing a quieter party than usual. Alarm bells started ringing last week when the only company licensed to supply the gunpowder used on the replica muskets issued a statement saying that they were unable to distribute the material for unspecified reasons. Half a dozen Alicante municipalities, including Muro and Elda, have now said that their upcoming fiestas will not have the traditional gunshots for the first time in their history and others look set to follow, depending when the fiesta is and whether a new source for the black powder can be found. Not everyone will be upset of course, not least nervous pets and those who don’t appreciate being woken up in the early hours by hundreds of fake firearms.

to be consumed at one of the markets bars, accompanied by a glass of wine or beer. The new campaign starts this Friday at 5pm and then every subsequent Friday from the same time. There will also be regular special events such as children’s activities and music.

Squatters making life hell

The paediatric team show off their new look.

AN estimated 23 of the 64 properties on the Mirador Monte Pedrera urbanisation in Denia are occupied by squatters and neighbours say that the situation for those dwelling legally is becoming increasingly difficult. In a recent incident a private security guard on patrol had his arm broken and residents say they have received death threats

as well as physical and verbal intimidation. Property has also been damaged, cars scratched and wheels punctured while there have been break-ins and attempted burglaries. To add insult to injury the squatters have tapped into an illegal electricity supply

using street lights, something the urbanisation is picking up the bill for, currently around €20,000. The “wave of people” moved in around two years ago almost overnight according to reports. Legal residents have held meetings with the police and town council but say that little or no action has been taken.

Mistakes That First-Time Puppy Owners Should Avoid Having a canine companion can be lifechanging; while it can make you a happier person, there are some responsibilities that come as a part of the package. If the idea of bringing home a puppy excites you, there are a lot of things that you need to do to gear up for the change. If you live alone, it can mean altering your lifestyle for this new companion and if you live with family, your loved ones would need to get involved as well. While a new puppy can be a great addition to your family, you need to avoid certain mistakes as a first-timer. Here are some common ones that you should be aware about. Not thinking before taking the plunge The worst mistake that first-time puppy owners do is not thinking before bringing one home. To start with, you need to discuss your intention with your family if you live with them. Ensure that they are all comfortable

with the idea of having this canine member joining them. Additionally, they should be ready to share the responsibilities and joys of pet parenting with you. Also, make sure that your lifestyle allows you to take this responsibility. Those who travel a lot, for example, should consider the alternative arrangements for leaving their pet home when they are out of town. Not choosing the right breed If you think that paying attention to the animal’s breed is not important, you are mistaken. Do not choose one on the basis of looks but make sure that the puppy will be able to blend in your lifestyle and you will be able to give it good care. There are some breeds that enjoy the company of children and you should choose them if you have children at home. Certain breeds require intensive physical exercise and are ideal for people with active lifestyle.

Not getting the puppy health-tested before bringing it home The secret of being a happy pet parent greatly depends on your ability to find the perfect puppy that is cute and healthy. Not getting it health-tested before bringing it home is another mistake that you should absolutely avoid. Buying from a reliable source is important because these breeders take good care of dogs and their young ones are less susceptible to inherited health problems. Moreover, they do all the necessary health tests before selling the puppies. Not training the puppy Not training the puppy is a mistake that a majority of people make. Just adopting an animal will not give you the expected benefits of being a pet owner. Training it makes the puppy social, keeps it safe and strengthens your bond with it. The objective of training goes much beyond making the pet obedient and disciplined.

URGENT HELP NEEDED!!! PUPPIES FOR HOMING.- Due to the

A note from Sun Lawyers We would like to thank all the interested parties that stopped by at our stand at the Place in the Sun Live exhibition in London, although numbers were down from last year, it is clear that the British people still have their heart on buying in Spain. The Sun Lawyers team had a chance to show off their expert knowledge on property purchases, relocation, together with other legal matters, regarding Spain. There was plenty of interest for the Costa Blanca, with Murcia & Almeria following closely

Our team found people were brushing aside any fears they may have and since the postponement of Brexit they were keen to move ahead to purchase in Spain. We at Sun Lawyers have always believed the traditional holiday/second home links to Spain coupled with the proximity and fabulous weather will continue to make Spain an attraction for UK buyers, now and for years to come. This was made clear from the hundreds of people’s comments who passed through our stand over the weekend. Potential property buyers kept us busy asking questions on all aspects of legal matters in Spain, and when would be the right time to buy. Sun Lawyers will be continuing their association with Place in the Sun in the future and look forward to the next event in Birmingham on September 20th and we look forward to providing you with all our legal expertise for all your requirements in Spain. BALAERIC BOOM TIME Though areas like the Costa Blanca have some of the most significant property price increases in Spain, it´s the holiday islands of the Balaerics like Ibiza that are seeing prices climbing the fastest, at almost double the national average! The IMIE General Index shows an annual rate of increase of eight per cent across the islands, compared to a national price rise of just under four per cent. A blackand-white crossword-style grid is set up for each quote, with a number of letters “hovering” above each column. Your task is to “drop” each of those letters into the appropriate square in each column, until the entire quote is revealed. All punctuation (commas, periods, dashes, etc.) has been removed. Good luck!

Well, at last, after weeks of me counting down to the biggest event on the camp calendar, Eurovision week is finally upon us. By the time you read this column, the two semi-finals will have been contested and the full line up for Saturday’s Eurovision Song Contest 2019 final will be in place. As per normal, this year’s Eurovision has had its fair share of controversy, not least because the event takes place in Tel Aviv, which has brought on calls for boycotts and lots of soul searching from performers and broadcasters. Even Madonna, who is rumoured to be performing live on the final, has broken her silence to silence her critics, saying, “I’ll never stop playing music to suit someone’s political agenda nor will I

stop speaking out against violations of human rights wherever in the world they may be.” Politics aside, I have to say, having watched the first semi final, I thought some of the songs that qualified for the final, were complete rubbish. My favourite moment was when the tiny nation of San Marino was put through, with their old fashioned euro anthem `Say Na NaNa`, by an old geezer called Serhat, who looks like a Benidorm Palace crooner from the 1970’s. Kitsch, camp and a throwback to a more innocent era, it’s the song I shall be rooting for on Saturday, as poor Michael Rice, the UK entrant, has about as much chance of winning as me.

Who gets the Darcey role? Shirley wants ‘sensational’

Strictly Come Dancing fans have been getting into a right old tizzy about who might replace the departing Darcey Bussell on the show’s judging panel this year, alongside head judge Shirley Ballas, Craig Revel Horwood and Bruno Tonioli. Rumoured names in the mix include Ashley Roberts, Alfonso Ribeiro, Ashley Banjo, Karen Hardy and Helen Richey. Zoe Ball, who presents the BBC 2 offshoot, Takes Two show, told her Sun Bizarre column readers that, she’d, “really like to see Anton [Du Beke] in that role, he’d be amazing.

But I have heard there is talk the new judge will be a woman.” Along those lines, Revel Horwood has put his weight behind Nicole Sherzinger as Darcey’s replacement. Strictly professional OtiMabuse has emerged as the bookies favourite, whilst Shirley Ballas, refuses to be drawn, only saying, “The BBC will pick someone who is qualified and fits in with the panel.‘There’s four of us so they have to gel well and pick someone who is sensational.” Oh, dear me, it’s all getting too exciting for words.

SHAKIRA CLEARED

COLUMBIAN singers Shakira and Carlos Vives have been cleared in a Madrid court this week of accusations they plagiarised part of their Grammy award-winning hit “La Bicicleta”. Livan Rafael Castellanos, a Cuban singer known as Livam, had alleged that the catchy tune copied parts of the melody and lyrics from his own song called “Yo te quiero tanto” (I love you so much). “There is no plagiarism whatsoever as claimed by the plaintiff in this lawsuit,” the

court said in its ruling. Music publisher MDRB had filed a complaint in 2017 in the Madrid court on behalf of Livam. In March, Shakira, 42, who lives in Barcelona with her partner footballer, Gerard Pique and their two sons, told the court she had “never heard” Livam’s song before. Vives, 57, also said he did not know the song or Livam. “La Bicicleta” -- or “The Bicycle” in English -- won two of the three biggest Grammy Latino awards for 2016,

including song and record of the year. There´s more legal worries though around the corner for Shakira, who is due to appear in court again next month for allegedly evading Spanish taxes of 14.5 million euros, a charge her lawyers deny. She is suspected of not paying taxes in Spain despite being a resident between 2011 and 2014, according to prosecutors. Shakira only transferred her official residency to Spain from the Bahamas in 2015.

Doris did it her way

Of all the tributes that poured in following the recent death of one of Hollywood’s greatest icons, Doris Day, at the ripe old age of 97, the one from ex Beatle Paul McCartney struck me the most. After decades of success from the late 1940’s into the early 70’s, Doris, who’d made her name playing fun, frothy wholesome roles with stars such as Cary Grant and James Garner, in movies like Pillow Talk, withdrew from the spotlight. Instead, she became a powerful, vocal activist for animal rights, which McCartney was quick to point out in his heartfelt tribute, “So sad to hear of Doris Day passing away,” he wrote on his personal blog. “She was a true star in more ways than one. I had the privilege of hanging out with her on a few occasions.” “Visiting her in her Californian home was like going to an animal sanctuary where her many dogs were taken care of in splendid style. She had a heart of gold and was a very funny lady who I shared many laughs with.” That’s a fabulous way to be remembered ….. RIP Doris.

Doris Day became a powerful animal rights activist.

ALFAZ FANTASY FOOTBALL LEAGUE

The Sun shone on the last Day of the Premier League Season which gave us plenty of excitement and Drama if only for a few seconds. There was one Monday Night game and a full Premier League at the weekend which provided the Alfaz Fantasy Football League with 37 goals, 6 clean sheets, Only 28 yellow cards and one red one which was Watford’s Holebas who received his marching orders from Referee Chris Kavanah. Linda’s Team Tapas maintained their position at the top of the A.F.F.L. with a 19 point margin over John’s team Wee Aggies and with only the F.A.Cup Final to come it’s fair to say Linda’s Team Tapas are firm favourites. Andrew’s team Ballers made up ground on the two front-runners but not enough to change the final out come. At the opposite end of the table, Gary’s Upside Team are just waiting for the Trap Door to open. There were plenty of goals going into our Across the Costa’s Golden Boot League with the

average score over 10 points. Kevin’s team Two for the Road have control of this Section with a 24 point advantage over the high flying Kenny’s Albir Boro Army Utd who have replaced Bill’s team East Fifers in the runners-up spot. Down at the foot of the table, Leo’s Power Blueboys failed to score which means they are still lagging behind Richard’s Dunkrat by 16 points. Linda’s Team Tapas will definitly be picking up some silver wear as they have clinched our Mark Carter Ladies Section by taking a massive 45 point lead at the top over Barbra’s XI. Pauline’s Vodka Army are in 3rd place and I’m pretty sure that’s how the top 3 will finish up. Liz’s Cookies Crew had a good week with a 26 point haul which as taken them 18 points clear of Kim’s team Ginger United at the bottom. In our Junior League William & Henry may just have enough points to keep TJ’s Blue Moon F.C.in 2nd place and go on to win this Section. Third place is still

Fifteen female and male members of the Marina Alta Golf Society played a singles Stableford Competition game at the Oliva Nova course on Monday 13th May 2019. The game was in support of the captain’s charity ( not his cruise I may add ) to which the society will later hand over monies collected throughout the season. The Oliva Nova course was in fine shape as expected as the members teed offin warm and sunny conditions. In a break with normal events, after the game the members adjourned to a nearby restaurant to hear the details of the winners and the presentation of prizes. In 1st place it was John Cunningham with a whopping 40 points off a 22 handicap. I was not told any details of his game other than he played well. In second place with 38 points was Richard Delaney off a 29 handicap. On the 8th hole, for his third shot Richard skipped across the pond before the hole into the bunker on the right of the green. He then chipped out and into the hole for a birdy and five points. Well done Richard who found his game after scoring 0 on the first four holes.

Third place went to Alan Tissington with 36 points off a 22 handicap while in fourth place Allan McManus scored 35 points off a 28 handicap. NTP. There were four prizes today sponsored by birthday boy Denis McVeigh. Hole 3 was won by Keith Cottrell, hole 5 in two shots went to John Cunningham, hole 16 saw Dave O’Meara collect the prize while Barry Woodcock walked away with the prize in two on hole 18 with no other player having reached the green in two and Barry was playing in the last group. There were no two’s today with the money going to the Capt’scharity. The Marina Alta Golf Society is a small but friendly group of players who play every Monday at the Oliva Nova course with first Tee time being about 10.40. If you want to join this friendly group of golfers as a guest then a warm welcome will be waiting for you. BACK IN BUSINESS World number one Novak Djokovic beat Stefanos Tsitsipas to win the Madrid Open for a third time on Sunday, and sent out a massive message that he´s back in form ahead of the second slam of the season in Paris later this month. The Serbian beat Rafael Nadal’s semi-final conqueror 6-3 6-4 in one hour 32 minutes to earn a record-equalling 33rd Masters 1000 title.

by Alex Trelinski

Djokovic’s 74th Tour title came after having made just one quarter-final in three tournaments since lifting the trophy at the Australian Open for a seventh time. Djokovic, who matched Nadal’s record for Masters 1000 triumphs, will hold all four Grand Slam titles if he goes on to claim a second French Open title next month.

Victory in the last outing at Jerez, saw the world champion return to his usual success after falling in the previous outing in Texas. He´s spent some time chilling out and going to F1 race in Barcelona last weekend and watching some football, ahead of a full return to the business at hand. The Spaniard won at Le Mans last year, but is not leaving anything to chance saying, “It can be a tricky GP, especially if the weather changes, so we must be ready for anything the opposition can throw at us”.

Lewis Hamilton won Sunday´s Spanish Grand Prix at Barcelona for a third consecutive year after overtaking Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas at the first turn, in what was another shut out of the Ferrari team. Although the Finnish driver began on pole position after going fastest in qualifying on Saturday, Hamilton sped past his championship rival just seconds into the fifth race of the season. Up until the weekend, the Mercedes pair had shared two race wins apiece in Australia, Bahrain, China and, last time out, in Azerbaijan. However, despite Bottas starting from a more advantageous position on the grid, the five-time world champi-

on shot past him almost immediately and never looked back. Hamilton was full of praise for his Mercedes as he celebrated his win in the immediate aftermath. “I have to put it down to this incredible team,” Ham-

ilton said. “This is history in the making, with five onetwo finishes in a row. I’m so happy for every one of them..” With the Dutch Grand Prix reinstated in the Spanish time slot for next year, Barcelona circuit officials

said that they are still optimistic of doing a new deal to keep F1 in Spain next year, albeit in a different slot in the race calendar. Next on this year´s schedule is the always eye-catching Monaco Grand Prix on Sunday May 26th.

since 1984, when they lost 2-0 to Everton, in the days of Elton John being the club chairman, and Graham Taylor their manager. The Hornets have enjoyed a mostly successful campaign under Javi Garcia, but City did the double over Watford in the league this season - winning 3-1 at home and 2-1 away. It´s very difficult to see how Watford can stop the Blue juggernaut, but as they always say, especially in cup ties, it´s eleven against eleven!
