at a routine police patrol set up on the A-7 motorway to check for driving offences. When the driver was stopped he was clearly extremely agitated and the

agents decided to search the car. They then found two large bags in hidden compartments containing several hundred euros worth of new tools. The three were unable to give a suitable explanation as to the origin of these,

produce receipts or explain why the tools had been hidden. The items were all brand names and the police rang round local DIY establishments, more than one of which confirmed a recent theft. At least one of

the robberies had been recorded on CCTV and this further linked the crime to the men who were arrested and charged. The three are Lithuanian nationals aged between 25 and 61 who have long criminal records.

Investment Choices – where should you begin? Three main possibilities when investing are: • making deposits; • buying fixed interest securities; and • buying equities. Each must bear a relatively stable rate of return relationship to the other for the economy to function. Let’s look at how they compare.

The world of investing can be very complex and confusing. Making the right investment choices however is absolutely paramount to ensuring your long term financial goals can be met. Most people seek a professional Financial Adviser or a Discretionary fund manager to select and manage their investments, but it is always good (and sometimes interesting) to getting a better understanding of the main areas of investing.

Cash Deposits Deposits generally yield less than fixed interest securities for a similar degree of risk, and rarely achieve much real growth over time once tax is taken into account, but funds can be accessed more easily. Fixed interest securities Fixed interest securities generally yield lower overall returns than equity investments, but have higher returns than deposits; however, they will rarely beat inflation by a significant amount. They tend to be lower risk than equities. Equities Equity investments will generally achieve

returns that are higher than both fixed interest securities and cash deposits over the longer term. The dividend yield on equities is, however, usually low compared to the yield on fixed interest securities, but both dividends and share prices have the potential to grow over time to compensate. There may be a higher level of risk.

is almost certain to have repercussions in the others, i.e. a reduction in interest rates could encourage a rise in both fixed interest and equity values, but lower returns from deposits.

Different Roles

There is, therefore, a fixed hierarchy of returns that is unlikely to be breached for any substantial period. In assessing the choices that are available, the following points should also be considered: Investors’ money tends to move to those areas where it will achieve the best results, in relation to both the risk that is involved and how long investors are prepared to tie up their funds. There are separate financial markets in each of the main types of investments (cash deposits, fixed interest securities and equities). However, a change in one market, such as an interest rate change,

GOOD DEED PUNISHED by Alex Trelinski

She promptly threw out all of his items into the street, and the matter then escalated. The man confidently went to the Guardia Civil in Santa Pola and issued a denunica against her, which stated that that he was actually renting the property, and not the female tenant, and that she had no right to live there. Matters then got worse for the Good Samaritan, as she was arrested and brought before a judge to testify over the events. The good news for her was that the judge and

prosecutors did not buy into the yarn that was spun by the man, and the case was instantly dismissed after a traumatic time for her. Authorities pointed out that it was important for anybody offering a home to anybody, for even a short time, to get something down in writing to prevent the possibility of being hood-winked with a false accusation. No mention was made over any action being taken against the Good Samaritan’s false accuser over wasting the time of the Guardia Civil or the court.

Weekend Tragedy A 24-YEAR-OLD British man died in a motorcycle accident on the CV-95 Torrevieja to Orihuela road last Saturday afternoon. Satellite TV technician, Max Bennett, who was a bike enthusiast, went off the highway at around 4.00 pm, as his machine veered sharply and crashed into a barrier.

by Alex Trelinski

The tragedy happened close to the junction with the CV-945 to Entre Naranjos and Los Montesinos, and no other vehicle was involved. Father-of-three Max was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics, with his funeral service taking place in Las

Heredades on Wednesday. Max lived in Almoradi with his partner Saskia, with many tributes being posted on social media from his family and friends. Over two thousand euros was raised in just a day for Saskia and the children via a Gofundme on-line campaign, which is aiming at a five thousand euro target.

AN ACT of kindness to a homeless man in the Santa Pola area from a 70-year-old woman, ended up in court, when he tried to have her evicted from her own apartment. A friend of the unnamed lady asked her if she could put up the man for a few days, after a restraining order from his partner forced him out of his own property. The woman happily agreed to lend a helping hand, but when she returned from a fortnight’s trip to London, she discovered that her guest had refused to leave, as he had previously agreed.

and he was able to continue the pattern by threatening to harm her or tell her mother what was happening. The matter came to light after the girl told a teacher

at school she was being abused; she in turn told the parent who filed a complaint. The defendant, Pedro HS from Villena, was sentenced to 14 years and 3 months in prison, seven years probation and a fine of €10,000 to be paid as compensation.

THREE RESCUE ships carrying hundreds of migrants arrived at Valencia City on Sunday, after being turned away from Italy and Malta, until Spain’s prime minister, Pedro Sanchez, promised them a safe haven. The new PSOE/Socialist government has taken up the cause of the migrants to

by Alex Trelinski

demonstrate its commitment to protecting human rights. The migrants were welcomed by health officials, Cruz Roja volunteers, psychologists and interpreters. Aquarius was originally set to dock in Italy, but the newlyformed Italian government

had turned the ship away. Following Italy’s decision, Malta said it too would not accept the ship either so it remained in limbo between the two countries for days. Public works minister, Miguel Angel Abalos, said that the migrants from the Aquarius would be granted a “special authorisation” to remain in Spain for one month before “they will be dealt with according to our laws without exception”. The arrival of the Aquarius convoy comes during a spike of seaborne migrants crossing from African shores to southern Spain. Through the first five months of 2018, a total of 35,455 migrants reached European shores, with 11,792 of them arriving in Spain.

Child abuse neighbour sentenced THE Superior Court of Justice in Alicante has sentenced a man to just under five years in jail for sexually abusing a neighbour’s child. The abuse occurred on several occasions in 2016 when the nine year old girl went to the defendant’s house to play with his children

by Simon Russell

who are of a similar age. He took advantage of this and touched her inappropriately when the other children were watching TV and when they were alone. The victim’s father heard of the abuse and reported

the matter to the National Police. The court heard how the little girl was diagnosed as suffering post-traumatic stress, for which she is receiving counselling. The defendant was also fined €6,000 to help with the cost of this and as general compensation.

Highest death rate for four decades DEMOGRAPHIC statistics just published showed the unexpected figure that 2017 registered the highest death rate in Spain since 1976. 423,543 people died last year, 2.3% higher than 2016 and a mortality rate of 9.1 deaths per thousand inhabitants. This figure is about 31,000 higher than the birth rate of 391,930 although this was still 4.5% down on the previous year. Life expectancy in Spain remains at 83.1 on average (80.4

Sanchez speaks

for men and 85.7 for women). Spain’s birth rate has been steadily falling for several years while its population gets older, something that increasingly worries government as the amount of taxpayers reduces year on year. There are now 10.5 million women in Spain of “child bearing age”, defined as 15 to 49 and a figure that has dropped for several years.

Birthday bash ends in tragedy

SPANISH police have reported the death of a 40-yearold British motorcyclist who died on the roads of northern Spain after a collision with another vehicle. The accident happened near the town of Tineo in the Asturias region when witnesses said the man hit an oncoming car front on. The deceased Briton was with a companion on a trip to celebrate both of their birthdays and they

by Matthew Richards

were on their way to catch the Santander ferry to the UK. It appears the motorcyclist had drifted over into the oncoming lane for reasons unknown, although a full investigation will follow. The other vehicle had five occupants, two adults and three children, but there are no reports of any major injuries.

Spain’s new Socialist prime minister Pedro Sanchez has said that ‘’the time has come to exhume the remains’’ of dictator General Franco from the controversial mausoleum where he is buried, namely, the ‘Valley of the Fallen’ in San Lorenzo de el Escorial, near Madrid. In a wide-ranging interview with state broadcaster TVE on Monday night, Sanchez said that Spain ‘’can’t

by Alex Trelinski

afford symbols that are divisive for Spaniards’’ and that he means to transform the site into a place of reconciliation ‘’in memory of all Spanish people’’. Over 33 thousand victims from both sides of the Spanish Civil War are buried in the ‘Valley of the Fallen’ next to Franco’s remains. The mausoleum

was mainly built by forced labour in the forties and fifties. Sanchez also told TVE that he plans to call a general election in 2020, as he back-tracked on plans for an earlier vote. He added that it would be reasonable for Catalan seperatist leaders that are currently awaiting trial on sedition charges, to be moved from jails in the Madrid area to facilities in Catalunya.

Stop the cruelty THERE were crowds of protestors in Alicante last week to call on the government to ban bullfighting in the city and across the region. Organised by AnimaNaturalis International, the protests came ahead of the fights that are a feature of the Alicante Hogueras festival that is now underway. They released a cloud of red “blood” and daubed hands and faces with the substance to remind people that innocent animals die in a cruel way in the name of entertainment.

KING FELIPE’s brotherin-law, Inaki Urdangarin, reported to prison on Monday, following a Mallorcan court order issued last week. Princess Cristina’s husband, aged 50, is set to serve five years and ten months on various charges, including graft, tax evasion, and embezzlement. He checked in to at Brieva, some 100 kilometres north of Madrid,

Director of AnimaNaturalis Aida Gascon said “Society is tired of seeing how bullfighting receives the support and protection of the authorities, while more and more of the general public are against the spectacle.” She said the Alicante government team should have the courage to hold a public referendum on banning the event, something which she feels sure would see people vote to stop bullfighting.

at 8.00 am on Monday. Urdangarin used his family ties with the royal family to score public contracts relating to sports, then overcharged for events and hid the money abroad. He had been found guilty of using his Mallorca-based foundation to siphon off some six million euros in funds

between 2004 and 2006. The Mallorcan court found his wife not guilty of aiding Urdangarin in February last year. However, she was ordered to pay a 265 thousand euro fine as he was a beneficiary of her husband’s scheme. The couple moved to Geneva with their four children after the first allegations surfaced in 2012.

Yoyo thieves caught TWO men have been arrested in Redovan (Alicante) suspected of stealing around €8,000 from fruit machines by employing two simple scams. One of these is known as the “yoyo method” and involves sticking a thin thread to a coin and putting it in the slot, removing it when it had registered a credit. A similar scam involves using a coin with a hole drilled in it. The theft came to light after an engineer emptying the machine said the amount of cash held was far short of what is should be. The manager of the gaming room in question said he had been suspicious about the behaviour of two men the previous day. The Guardia Civil were contacted when the men

by Simon Russell

returned later that day and the officers searched them. They found a two euro coin with a thread attached and a foreign coin with a hole in

it. They have both now been connected to similar scams in San Isidro and Murcia. The two men, Moroccan residents of Granada in their forties, have been arrested awaiting charges.

Drug delivery system A man along with his wife and mother have been arrested after police in Alicante discovered what they concede was an ingenious way of selling cocaine. This consisted of hiding the drug inside the seats of his car and releasing quantities of the substance by pushing a hidden button. By travelling with his accomplices he could drive

by Alex Trelinski

through the city as if on a normal family trip and hand out the drug without having to leave the vehicle. However police had reason to suspect the man of drug dealing and began a surveillance operation. After several months they gathered sufficient evidence to search the car and found nine kilos

of cocaine and €120,000 in cash. They also searched two other vehicles registered to the family and found similar amounts of drugs and cash, using the same system to conceal the items. House searches in Altea and Alicante uncovered further drugs, cash and valuable jewellery. A man aged 45 and two women aged 37 and 73 have been arrested and await charges.

Fifth Benidorm brothers in busiest drugs bust in Spain AFTER a small drop in passenger numbers the previous month, AlicanteElche airport bounced back with a 1.5% increase in May. The exact number of passengers registered was 1,307,789, with 550,000 of those coming from the UK. Domestic flights accounted for the second highest number followed by the Netherlands, Germany, Norway and Belgium. The airport was the fifth busiest in Spain, behind Madrid, Barcelona, Palma and Malaga. The drop in travellers during April had been expected due to the Easter break falling early; so far this year overall numbers are up by 2.3% on the 2017 figure.

Two brothers have been arrested by National Police in Benidorm suspected of running a drug trafficking operation from their family shop. The arrest of the men, aged 32 and 35, is part of a Summer crackdown on drug related crimes in the resort. Officers ran an undercover surveillance

operation on the premises, after receiving information suggesting the brothers were distributing and selling narcotics in Benidorm and its surrounding towns, using their family business as cover. When they raided the store, officers seized a total of about 2 kilograms of cocaine, 400 grams of speed, 900 grams of cutting substance, 7 grams of MDMA, 2 grams of

by Andy Mansell

heroin, weighing scales and around 18,000 euros in cash. The detainees were kept in custody pending court appearances, whilst security forces in the city confirmed they had intensified police controls and interventions, with a view to suppressing drug dealers increasing profits through trafficking during the peak Summer months.

Arrested in prison A woman has been arrested after trying to smuggle drugs and other illicit goods into the Alicante jail where her husband is residing. The

by Simon Russell

incident took place at the Fontcalent Penitentiary earlier this month and the authorities said she was planning to take advantage of a planned face to face visit. H o w e v e r, on arriving at the jail she was clearly in a highly agitated state, and the prison guards decided to search her.

They found 40 grams of hashish, ten wraps of cocaine and a mobile phone complete with charger and SIM card on her person which had been hidden in her underwear. The 50-year-old has been charged with drug trafficking and detained. Further investigation also led them to a 30-year-old woman who they believe supplied the drugs and has also been

charged. The wife of the prisoner was the seventh person this year to be caught smuggling drugs into the Fontcalent jail. Narcotics have a value in prison of about five times what they would fetch on the streets, something which encourages some inmates to coerce relatives and other visitors into supplying the substances for them.

See You In Court TORREVIEJA council is taking legal action to force the architect of the city’s Teatro Municipal to sign-off on safety work, in a fresh bid to reopen the venue. The theatre was closed back in September 2015 after the council said the building needed essential improvements, which they claimed were not done by the previous Partido Popular administration. Over 40 thousand euros was spent on the improvements, but over a year ago, the the authority hit a major stumbling block. They were unable to get an opening license, because the original architect, Antonio Marquerie, wanted a substantial sum of money to sign-off on the work in addition to approving

by Alex Trelinski

the license:- something that was introduced in the wake of a stampede that killed three people at the Madrid Arena in 2012. Long negotiations between Marqueie and the council came to nothing, leading the mayor Jose Manuel Dolon to make an appeal to other architects to come forward to put pen to paper. Nothing came of that, and last October, the mayor put up posters in the building explaining why it had not reopened, and threatened to issue a denuncia against the original architect. Nine months later, that has eventually happened, as the Teatro Municipal approaches the third anniversary of being shut.

Videos posted on Facebook and Youtube of Benidorm football fans celebrating England’s last gap win over Tunisia in their world cup opener earlier this week, have caused an online storm. The clips, show the fans, many wearing England shirts, singing and celebrating at full volume on the streets of the resort well into the early hours. In one video, posted to Facebook, and viewed by 16,000 people to date, the fans

uploaded with the caption: “English celebrating the first win in Benidorm. “Anyone else coming to watch the World Cup here in Benidorm? “Can we just say: Please have some respect. This is not your town, you are visitors here.” However, many of the viewers questioned the condescending tone of the post and counteracted the argument in comments such as

“Won’t tolerate what exactly? Standing and singing in a street outside a bar,” said one. Another said: “Other than the moving of the scooter which was stupid, I don’t see anything wrong with that behaviour.” While a third added: “Looks like good-natured fun to me.” One poster bemoaned the fact that if the videos had shown groups of Scottish or Welsh fans celebrating they would have been seen as good natured fun, or in the case of the Irish, enjoying the craic, but as they were English, they were viewed as hooligans. Some posts on the video, claimed that riot police had been called to the scenes and were seen using batons, however, police sources confirmed that this was not the case and the no arrests were made during the celebrations.

From Italy to Elche A phone stolen from its owner in an Italian hospital was tracked down to Elche after some clever police work. The police’s attention was triggered after they become aware of someone in the city trying to sell a high end mobile – an iPhone 8 plus – at a very low price. Upon questioning the man he said first of all that he was selling it for a friend and when pushed further said his mother had found it in Italy. For this reason the local police took the phone in as lost property – reminding the man that he should have handed it in rather than tried to sell it - and an agent rang a contact number on the device. They got through to the wife of the phones owner who said it had recently been stolen from a maternity ward in Italy. This has been confirmed and the individual who tried to sell the item is now likely to face further questioning.

Spy pen peeping Tom arrested Radical tourist model A 43-year-old man has been arrested in Valencia on suspicion of using a camera pen to take images up a colleagues skirt and down the front of her clothing. The 35-yearold victim became suspicious after she felt the device rub against her leg under the desk. The man denied anything untoward had happened but after talking to co-workers and looking on the internet she became

by Simon Russell

concerned the man had been secretly filming her. She asked to see the pen but the man refused and her boss, and then the police, got involved at this stage. The authorities discovered the item – marketed as a “spy pen” – which contains a memory card and USB connection as well as a hidden

camera. The suspect admitted he had been taking photos of his colleague since April, either under the desk or down her top when standing behind her. They now have to decide what, if anything, to charge the man with under current Spanish law. Last week in the UK a proposed change in the law to criminalise so called “up-skirting” was thrown out of the Commons on a technicality.

THE pro-separatist group Arran has put forward proposals that if implemented would virtually stop mass tourism across this part of Spain. Arran supports separation of “Catalan Spain” - Catalonia, Valencia and the Balearic Islands and has been responsible for many high profile stunts such as draping the Catalan flag on Corbera Castle. They say that the current tourist

model is exclusively set up to benefit the wealthy ruling classes with no thought for ordinary people. They have said no new licences should be granted for hotels along with various other proposals. Although the group do not realistically expect any of their measures to be adopted, they may once again open the debate about what the Valencian tourist model should look like.

Not A Fair Cop

PILAR de la Horadada police officers staged a protest outside the local town hall this week calling for the resignation of the poilce councillor, Jose Tomas Saura. This was prompted by an incident back in January where two officers were infected with tuberculosis, as they arrested an Algerian man who was diagnosed with TB seven years ago. Union representatives say that the whole of the police staff have yet to be tested for TB, with local media outlets unable to get any comment from Tomas Saura. The opposition Partido Popular tried to get a censure motion passed against Tomas Saura at a recent council plenary meeting, but the ruling PSOEled authority managed to vote it down. Relationships between the Pilar police and Jose Tomas Saura have been seriously strained for the last couple of years, with the unions claiming that promises made to them by the councillor over a variety of issues have not come to fruition. Officers are scheduled to hold another demonstration outside Pilar town hall today(Friday).

FRIDAY 22ND JUNE 2018

Secrets of a sunken Nazi U-boat A documentary team are currently filming off the coast of Calpe where a Nazi submarine was sunk by British forces in 1943. The story behind the fate of U-77 has led to much speculation, ranging from it carrying cargo of German bullion worth millions to it being an elaborate plot to smuggle Adolf Hitler out of Germany. Subsequent dives have proven these rumours to be far-fetched and there was even an abortive attempt to raise the hulk in 2009. What is known is that on 28 March 1943 two British Lockheed Hudson fighter planes based in Gibraltar located and sunk U-77 just nine nautical miles off the Ifach rock. The greater mystery

by Simon Russell

is how they knew of its location and also if a supposedly neutral Spain was aware that an axis war boat was so close to its shores. TV director Fernando Navarette is making the documentary about the incident which will attempt to reconstruct the last 24 hours of the doomed vessel. As well as the underwater footage off Calpe he has travelled to Germany to piece together the story. When the vessel was sunk 36 men died, nine were rescued by a local fishing boat and two were classed as officially “missing” – something which led to speculation about one of these being Hitler.

The dead men were buried in an Alicante cemetery until 1983 when they were exhumed and moved to the cemetery in Cuacos de Yuste (Extremadura) where

all German soldiers killed in Spain during both world wars are now buried. Almost all of these are seamen whose bodies washed onto Spanish beaches.

State of the art pot farm raided POLICE in San Vicente del Raspeig have made several arrests connected to a marijuana farm they describe as being one of the most modern and best structured they have come across. The farm is part of a large scale operation which even included an estate agent who would identify big self-contained properties that would be suitable to house large scale plantations. The gang would then rent these, even offering sums well over the market rate to ensure they obtained the property they needed. Five of these were on a luxury housing estate

by Simon Russell

and were then illegally connected to the electricity grid to allow free power for the growing process which requires a huge amount of electricity. The organisation was led by a Dutch national who police believe is wanted in his homeland in connection with a homicide. Thirteen people were arrested in all ranging from “gardeners” to computer experts and distributors of the drug. Due to the scale of the business much of the cultivated marijuana was being exported throughout

Europe for sale. Police have seized 60 kilos of marijuana ready for sale, worth around €300,000. In addition they have taken 3,500 plants, small amounts of other drugs, computers, tablets, mobiles, five high end vehicles and around €10,000 in cash. Those arrested were from Bosnia, Russia, Colombia, Argentina, Morocco and five Dutch nationals. They have been charged with a variety of offences including belonging to a criminal organisation, money laundering, cultivation and growing of narcotics and stealing electricity.

Toll free travel a step closer THE government in Madrid has given its strongest reassurance yet that the AP-7 motorway will be toll free once the current contract expires at the end of next year. Head of the Ministry of Public Works, Jose Luis Abalos, has given an interview saying he would ensure that the AP-7 from Alicante to Tarragona as well as two other roads (the AP-1 in Burgos and the AP-4 in Andalucia) will be free to all traffic.

by Simon Russell

Abalos has said he will “fight for the Mediterranean Corridor” and the AP-7 is a vital part of that network. The dropping of tolls will also have a beneficial effect on towns such as Altea and Oliva that have the N-332 running through their centre. Despite both towns having the motorway almost parallel to them, the vast majority of traffic opts to take the cost free N-332.

SOFIA'S CHOICE THE ORIHUELA COSTA’s Tourist Information office at Playa Flamenca town hall reopened yesterday, after being closed down for a week, because there was nobody to run it. Orihuela’s tourism councillor, Sofia Álvarez, made the closure decision at the end of last week, and put up a sign in English and Spanish on the front door apologising for the inconvenience because of a lack of staff. The single staff member had been transferred to the council’s

culture department in Orihuela City, with the councillor saying saying that she had repeatedly warned mayor Emilio Bascuñana that she would shut the tourist office if no replacement was provided. On Wednesday, the authority’s HR department said they were able to fill the vacancy because there were openings in hiring from their pool of janitors, with the new employee described by Álvarez as having a “sufficient knowledge of English”.

Agents of shame

TWO insurance agents have been arrested by the Guardia Civil in Callosa de Segura on swindling charges, and bailed after a court appearance. The Spaniards, aged in their early fifties, are accused of ripping-off clients to the tune of nearly 600 thousand euros. Three victims have been identified, but Guardia investigators suspect that at least 20 customers were conned by the duo. The insurance salesmen started peddling bogus bonds with apparently high returns some five years ago, and reeled in their victims, who trusted the allegedly reputable company that they worked for. The bonds were just pieces of paper, and the men simply pocked the cash. They aroused the suspicion of one of their clients, who needed a withdrawal to help pay for the first communion of one of his children. The men tried to fob him with excuses as to why they could not pay him, and the client reported them to the Guardia Civil, who then uncovered a whole series of irregularities.

Free And Universal

SPAIN’S new socialist/ PSOE government will reintroduce free universal healthcare across the country. The ex-Partido Popular government under Mariano Rajoy stopped healthcare for anyone who not a legal resident some six years ago, with exceptions for emergency treatment and children. The move led to the Valencia regional government leftist coalition, which was elected in 2015, to defy the Madrid government by offering free healthcare to everybody, before eventually being ordered via court ruling to observe the national position. The healthcare development had been promised last month as part of the deal to oust Rajoy in a confidence vote, whilst the new health minister is Carmen Monton, who also held the same position in Valencia. Cabinet spokeswoman Isabel Celaá said talks

by Simon Russell

were under way with all of the country’s regional governments to negotiate the return of public healthcare to everybody, irrespective of whether or not they had a valid residence permit or were working, retired, registered on the dole or in receipt of maternity, paternity or sick pay. “It’s merely a question of political decency,” Sra Celaá said. It will take around a month for the changes to take effect, but Celaá added that there was ‘no danger’ of any regional health authority refusing care after it became universal and free once again.

On the march for equal rights THOUSANDS of people took to the streets of Valencia last Sunday to demand equal rights for the LGTBI community in the region and across Spain. As well as individuals more than 50 organisations were represented under the slogan “We will achieve equality, we will transform society.” After marching the planned route, the crowd then gathered in Plaza del Ayuntamiento where their demands and manifestos were read out. These included legislation against LGTBIfobia, an end to LGTBIphobic violence and increased action to fight the HIV

virus and end the stigma of those infected with it. They also stated that there needs to be an end to hate speech disguised as freedom of expression and the withdrawal of any subsidies to organisations that promote homophobia such as some religious organisations. The event’s main coordinator, Fani Boronat, said “We require strong commitment across all society and the support of government. Only in this way can a truly inclusive democracy that recognises the rights of all people be built.”

Mobile jellyfish by Simon Russell

JELLYFISH have been in abundance off the Costa Blanca this year, and you can now even get an app for your phone that allows you to track their whereabouts in your vicinity. The Medusapp has been

developed by two students at the University of Valencia working alongside researchers at Alicante University and is free. It depends largely on the public submitting data and photos, which are then uploaded to a database that builds a real time map of jellyfish activity on the Spanish coastline. If they can make a positive identification the species will also be shown; important information with some being relatively harmless while other such as the Portuguese man

o’wars seen off these waters recently can inflict a serious sting. To try and help build a complete picture of local bathing conditions people can also send in other information such as oil slicks, foams, excess rubbish and so on. To see an online version you can go to www.medusapp.net.

Toxic waste TESTS have shown that wastewater discharging onto the Monte Pego urbanisation has been tested at being ten times the permitted level of toxicity. The AVMP residents association asked for the analysis of the “blackwater” which is produced as a result of deficient purification facilities. The company commissioned to do the tests took samples from four areas and Pego town hall passed them on this week. As well as the urbanisation the waste water is also making its way to the Pego-Oliva marshes via streams and rivers, a protected and important environmental area. An AVMP spokesman described the finding as “alarming and intolerable” and complaints have been filed with the Valencian governing body.

Benidorm Brit stag party death Distraught relatives and friends of a British man, who died last Sunday whilst on a stag weekend in Benidorm, have raised enough funds to fly his body home. Lee Okrasa, a thirty-eight year old father of two from Sheffield, had been in the resort with a group of friends. Details of the fatality remain unclear as a police investigation is still in progress, leaving grieving relatives uncertain of the circumstances involved in Okrasa’s death. In addition, the victim had travelled to Spain without travel insurance, meaning relatives were faced with the cost of repatriation of his body. However, family friend, Scarlett Cooper launched an online GoFundMe page to raise 5000 pounds to help the families plight. “Lee was an amazing, genuine

Good Samaritans detain thief

NEIGHBOURS of an elderly man who was being robbed in Novelda came to his help and managed to restrain the female thief until the police arrived. The incident happened earlier this week when the 27-year-old woman forced her way into the man’s property in the Garrova area of the town. He started to fight back and once neighbours realised what was happening they intervened and held the woman until she was taken away by local police. The victim was treated for bruising on his arms but was otherwise unhurt. The woman had a criminal record and it was likely she chose her target because of his age, although she clearly got more than she bargained for from him and other local residents.

Man burnt after boat fire

A 51-year-old man who was doing some work on a boat in Denia port suffered severe burns after fire broke out on the vessel. The incident happened at around 8pm last Saturday evening when an explosion in the engine compartment led to a fire. The man sustained the burns to his face and arms after trying to douse the flames. He has been taken to the special burns unit at Valencia de Fe Hospital and the burns to his arm are said to be particularly severe. The boat has been dry docked to prevent it sinking.

Back In HOLES IN THE WALL FRIDAY 22ND JUNE 2018

IT MAY have kept the Scots out of England, but Hadrian’s Wall is facing a more serious threat today, namely illegal treasure hunters. The 73-mile wall, built by the Romans, stretches between Wallsend in North Tyneside and Bowness on Solway in Cumbria and has around 160 monuments, which include Roman camps, forts and signal stations. But so-called nighthawk metal detectorists are being blamed for over 50 holes found 1,900-year-old the around Brunton Turret section, near Hexham, Northumberland. Other areas of the ancient wall, a World Heritage site, have been targeted. Historic England said those responsible were searching for loot such as Roman coins and military regalia, and they were now working with police to try and find those responsible. But it added it was not practical to install security measures like CCTV along the stretch of the wall.

Anyone using a metal detector without authorisation on these sites is committing a criminal offence. Historic England wants visitors to Hadrian’s Wall

residents to report illegal metal detecting which they say is “causing loss and damage to our shared cultural heritage”. the Collins, Mike of inspector organisation’s

ancient monuments, said: “The small number of people who steal artefacts and damage ancient sites are breaking the law and robbing us all of the knowledge and understanding that objects

from the past can give us.” He said the majority of items taken were sold on, some via online auction sites, with others being bought by individual collectors.

Britain COUNCIL’S YELLOW PERIL

AN ENGLISH council bemusement caused has among residents after painting double yellow lines around a pothole, instead of fixing it. the painted Workers lines around the hole in the road on a road in WestonSomerset. super-Mare, It has been reported the the crater, which is four feet long, has been there since 2009. But instead of repairing the pothole in Frenchay Road, council staff merely painted double yellow lines around it. One local resident complained about the work, saying that the road should be filled in. Nick Hayman said: “North Somerset Council is more interested in making money from parking fines than repairing roads in Weston-super-Mare.” “This is just another example

that the council has a bigger priority in getting revenue from parking fines than spending money on repairing roads.” A spokesman for the

council said: “We can’t defend this. We got it wrong.” “We will repair the road surface as soon as possible and have the lining put back correctly.”

SHELL-SHOCKED

A LINCOLNSHIRE woman, who tried to sell a World War Two bomb on eBay for 99 pence, ended up having to call in the bomb squad, after a prospective buyer told her that the weapon was still live. Tracie Wright from Spalding called emergency services after a collector said that the German shell, which her children had been playing with, could explode at any moment. she’d thought Tracie bought an empty explosive shell and even planned to give it to one of her youngsters to take it to school for a lesson. The missile could have possibly

contained a tracer round of bullets. This is a flammable material that ignites to produce a bright yet deadly trail of light towards a target. Tracie found the item at a bottle of a box of collectables she bought from an auction and compared it to other items online. But just hours after posting it for sale online, an eagle-eyed collector got in touch with her, and told her it could be potentially lethal. Tracie said:- “The bomb squad told me that if it was dead, then the explosion would just be a small ‘poof ’ and if it was live then it would be a ‘bang’ and it definitely went ‘bang’.

look elsewhere. Sources say that Valencia City is very much their favoured location for the new factory. LVHM representatives have already been visiting the city, looking for real estate and investigating other logistics such as transport. The majority

of their goods are manufactured from leather, and experienced leather workers will be sought in the area to work there. Several major businesses have moved from Catalonia to the Valencian region since the separatist movement held an illegal independence referendum last year.

5 pet-friendly preparations for your summer travels

(BPT) - On your most challenging days you can always count on your pet to greet you at the door when you come home or cuddle up in your lap in the evening. They are a vital part of your home life all year long, but when your life takes you away from home - as it often does during summer travel - are you thinking of them before you head out the door?

find the best pet sitter for you.

With so much to pack and prepare for your trip, it’s easy to forget about those you’ll leave behind, like your pets. That’s why if you’re planning to leave for a day or longer, you should make sure to employ these five tips to make sure your pet is happy and safe while you’re away. This beautiful Pointer cross is almost 3 years old and has been spayed and micro chipped. She loves to go for walks and be made a fuss of and would make a great companion. No adoption fee but a donation is always appreciated. Food and donations also urgently needed and can be left at ARC’s charity shop on Carrer Valencia 1, Jalon between 10 am & 1.30 pm Monday to Saturday. so when you’re gone, you’ll need a pet sitter to fill these duties. Finding a quality, reliable pet sitter can be the difference between a happy pet and damage to your home when you return. Try to trade sits with a fellow pet owner, and if that’s not possible, the National Association of Professional Pet Sitters is a nonprofit organization with resources to help you

* Be mindful of the temperature. Knowing the temperature patterns in your destination city plays a big role in how you pack, but have you looked at what the weather has in store for your home while you’re gone? Allowing your home to get overly hot while you’re away isn’t good for your pet. You can control the temperature in your home - even while you’re away - with the Coleman Echelon Hx Touchscreen Thermostat. This WiFi-enabled smart thermostat provides more than just comfort, it monitors the temperature in your home, allowing you to always be aware of your home’s temperature. And best of all, it’s completely controllable from your smartphone, so even if you forget to make adjustments before you go, resetting the temperature in your home is just a click away. * A little cleaning goes a long way. Your pet really isn’t that different from you; they appreciate a nice clean area to live in as well. Give it to them before you go by making sure the litter box or the yard is clean and that you’ve picked up as much clutter as possible. Wash the blankets that adorn their favorite sleeping places and make sure the space is ready for their use. * A little TV time. If commotion is the name of the game in your home, a house that is suddenly too quiet could have a negative impact on your pet. To alleviate this concern, leave the television on in one of the rooms so your pet can enjoy a little noise in the background. Just make sure you choose a room that is different from where your pet often sleeps so they can comfortably avoid the sound if they want to. * Leave a little bit of yourself. Is it possible to be in two places at once? In some ways yes. Leaving items out that smell like you laundry or blankets, for example - can be a wonderful source of comfort in instances when your pet is feeling stressed. Just remember that if your pet likes to chew, these items could be their first target, so only leave things you’re comfortable losing. Having a pet doesn’t mean you need to put your summer plans on hold, it just adds another layer to your planning process. Apply the tips above, and you and your pet will be happy and comfortable until the trip is over and you’re reunited.

King of Spain visits Whitehouse KING Felipe and Queen Letizia visited US President Donald Trump and his wife Melania at the Whitehouse on Tuesday. The Spanish monarch and his consort were in the US as part of a five day visit to celebrate the tricentenary of New Orleans and San Antonio, two cities with strong links to Spain. Political commentators would have noted the different approach to the two countries on the issue of immigration. While Trump is currently under fire for his controversial policy of separating children from asylum seeking parents, Spain has just welcomed over 600 refugees that Italy refused to let enter

by Simon Russell

their country. However it seems the pair stayed away from this issue, in public at least, and while Felipe talked of the harmony between the two powers President Trump defined their relationship as “outstanding”. There was also great interest in the Spanish press about the outfits worn by the two wives, noting that Melania Trump work shoes from a Spanish designer (Manolo Blahnik) and the Queen wore a dress from an American designer (Michael Kors) described as subtle tributes from both women.

Perfect score A Valencian teenager had that rarest of results this week, a perfect 100% score in her university entrance exams. Ana Ballester, from Valencia City, was on a well deserved end of term break with fellow students in Mallorca when she received the news. “I can’t believe it, I’m very happy” she said. “I left the test thinking that it had gone well, but not that everything would be perfect.”

by Simon Russell

The Selectividad entrance exams consist of seven different tests, with a maximum of 10 points for each one. Ana’s rare feat appears to be the only one across the Community and possibly the only perfect score in the whole of Spain. The 17-year-old plans to study Industrial Engineering at her homes cities Universitat Politecnica.

Local Lifesavers

A mixture of technology, training and quick action saved the life of a woman in Benitachell after she suffered a suspected cardiac arrest. The incident happened after the husband of the 42-year-old contacted the emergency services, saying that his wife was lying on the bed and not responding. Officers Sirvent and Tarrero were very close-by and attended the scene with their mobile defibrillator. Carrying out their trained cardiac resuscitation procedure

by Simon Russell

they managed to stabilise the woman’s condition until a full ambulance crew arrived. The woman has now recovered and thanked the agents for saving her life; she said she appeared to have had an extreme reaction to regular medication she was taking. Last year Officer Tarrero saved the life of a child who nearly drowned in the municipal swimming pool, again using his resuscitation training.

Renault Captur The Captur is Renault’s small crossover and is based on the Clio, but it’s more practical than its hatchback counterpart and thanks to competitive pricing, it represents a good value buy for the family buyer. It’s a good alternative to an MPV and it’s a stylish design too. The Captur is compact and drives like an everyday hatchback, with light controls and precise handling, but it also has the advantage of a raised driving position that affords good visibility. Interior space impresses too – the boot is big enough

for trips away and thanks to a sliding rear bench, rear seat passengers should be able to get comfortable even if they’re adults. Running costs should be low thanks to a range of three frugal engines – two petrol and one diesel. None is particularly powerful but even the entry-level 0.9-litre TCE petrol does a good enough job of moving the car around and getting up to speed. More important is the fuel economy – even the least efficient model in the Captur range - the 1.2-litre automatic - manages more than 50mpg while the impressive

It feels fairly durable, but it would be nice to see the plusher, soft touch material you get in rivals like the Peugeot 2008. Similarly the seat upholstery isn’t the thickest or softest, but it’s not a huge problem – not least because the seat covers can be

The Captur manages to deliver the stylish looks and the elevated driving position that make small crossovers so popular, coupled with efficient engines, good road manners and a practical cabin. Standard equipment is good which, combined with reasonable pricing, makes the Captur a good choice for families and arguably the best car in Renault’s range.

OH DANNY BOY! by Alex Trelinski

Danny Cipriani will make his first England start in 10 years after being named at fly-half for Saturday’s third Test against SouthAfrica in CapeTown(5.05 pm kick-off) Having lost the first two matches, tomorrow’s clash is all about restoring pride for England, who are still smarting from throwing away their opener almost a fortnight ago. 30-year-old Cipriani replaces George Ford, who drops out of the 23-man squad entirely. “We are expecting a wet and windy old day at Newlands and have elected to play Danny Cipriani ahead of George Ford to give us a left-foot kicking option,” said head coach Eddie Jones. Cipriani made his first appearance in three years when coming off the bench in the second Test, but has not started for his country since playing the Springboks in the autumn of 2008. “We are up for the battle and are going to rip in on Saturday. We want another committed performance where it will be crucial to maintain our composure when the heat is on,” said Jones.

England have set a new world record in One Day Internationals by smashing 481 for 6 against Australia at Trent Bridge. The record was made in the 45th over the match itself when England scored 446 runs. Interestingly, the previous record was also held by England when it had scored 444 for the loss of three wickets against Pakistan in 2016.

Alex Hales and Eoin Morgan were batting for England when the team smashed its previous record to set a new milestone in the history of One Day Internationals. However, Hales could not stay on the field for long as he was caught by Australia’s Agar in the 47th over

bowled by Richardson. The other teams who have scored maximum runs in ODIs are – Sri Lanka (443-9 vs The Netherlands) in 2006, South Africa (4392 vs West Indies in 2015 and 438-9 vs Australia in 2006). England surpassed the previous total of 444 set against Pakistan at Trent Bridge in 2016 with four overs to play.

No Hurry For Murray

Taking the Mick

by Alex Trelinski

Andy Murray is seriously considering giving Wimbledon a miss, after his first competitive match in almost a year saw the former world number one give a good account of himself against Nick Kyrgios. 12 months after his hip injury, the Scot lost in an entertaining three-setter to the erratic Australian at Queens Club on Tuesday, but crucially all of his style and ability was there for everybody to see and enjoy. The tennis ace now says that he’s looking at playing on the grass of Eastbourne next week, but not bothering with Wimbledon, which starts a week on Monday, as his recovery continues. “I need to wait and see what happens”, said the 31-year-old. “I don’t know exactly what’s best for me just now.” Murray, who has dropped to 156th in the world rankings, had surgery on his right hip in January. “I won’t rule anything out just now,” he said about his upcoming plans. “I wouldn’t rule out playing Eastbourne and not playing Wimbledon.” “I wouldn’t rule out playing a tournament next and trying to get matches in an exhibition tournament as well to get ready for Wimbledon”, he added..

Five-time golfing major winner, Phil Mickelson, has eventually apologised and said that he is “embarrassed and disappointed” after he putted a moving ball during the US Open last Saturday. His humbling words came some four days later in a text sent to reporters where he said:“I know this should’ve come sooner, but it’s taken me a few days to calm down.”. In an extraordinary moment, the 48-yearold jogged after and deliberately prevented his ball from rolling off the 13th green during the third round at Shinnecock Hills. “It was clearly not my finest moment and I’m sorry,” he said. “My anger and frustration got the best of

me last weekend. I’m embarrassed and disappointed by my actions.” He accepted a two-shot penalty from the United States Golf Association(USGA) for “making a stroke at a moving ball”, rather than the more severe offence of “an action with the intent to influence the movement of a ball in play”, which could have resulted in disqualification. He eventually finished in a tie for 48th place, 15 shots behind compatriot Brooks Koepka, who successfully defended the title, after seeing off a great challenge from England’s Tommy Fleetwood.

DELE ALLI SHUFFLES OUT

ENGLAND go into their next World Cup Group G game against Panama this Sunday(2.00 pm kick-off) with Spurs midfielder Dele Alli almost certain to miss out. He suffered a thigh injury in Monday’s win over Tunisia and is set to be replaced by Ruben Loftus-Cheek. The other casualty is coach Gareth Southgate, who dislocated his shoulder whilst on a run, and he joked that he’ll have to curb his touchline

celebrations, which caught the eye after Harry Kane’s late winner against Tunisia. Victory against the Central Americans this weekend should seal England’s place in the next stage of the tournament, without worrying about their main group rivals Belgium. Spain lead group B, after being made to sweat in Wednesday night’s one-

nil win over Iran, but they should go through against bottom side Morocco on Monday, whilst a draw would be good enough for Portugal against the Iranians. Could the unthinkable happen and champions Germany not make it past a group stage of the World Cup? After their shock Mexican defeat, the Germans have to beat group F leaders Sweden in Sochi this Saturday night to give themselves a realistic

chance of progressing, A draw would leave everything out of their own hands, which once again shows how important it is to win your group opener. Barring Uruguay, the South American sides have not been pulling up any trees so far, with the Uruguayans and hosts Russia both already qualifying from group A, as Egypt have disappointingly lost their two matches to bow out.
