Gang targeted tourists FOUR people have been arrested in connection with a number of thefts, including robbery with assault, across Alicante province. The gang specialised in robbing tourists and targeted the airport and hotels, being linked to at least nine offences. They had a wellestablished method of working, where the group searched sites for potential victims. Once they saw someone who looked vulnerable they would move in and steal handbags or suitcases when a victim’s guard was down, using force if necessary. Favoured

opportunities were when people were entering or leaving hotels or eating at airport restaurants. Their activity had increased recently as visitor numbers rose and the police became aware of an organised gang operating in the area. The group were trapped when trying to sell stolen goods, the police being aware of several second-hand stores they believe were being used to fence stolen items. They have said that the nine crimes are probably just the tip of the iceberg.

Twilight tours of the castle

YOU can take a tour of Denia’s historic castle up until half past midnight as part of the town’s “Visit the Castle by Night” scheme which runs until 15 September. However, organisers have said that a particularly special time to visit is the twilight hours around 9pm to 10.30 pm at this time of year. The Culture Department recommends a route that starts at Plaza del Ajuntament, taking in the Town Hall and 17th Century arcades. From there start your climb to the castle, passing historic sites such as the eleventh century Vila Portal. When you reach the top you are

rewarded with views of the Montgo Mountain, the port and Torre del Gorro, framed by the sunset. You may well be descending in the dark, but a well-lit route through the castle itself will see you on your way. Sites here include the Islamic Palau Vell, the remains of the Governor’s Palace and the Duc de Lerma. Last year’s night at the castle campaign saw nearly 12,000 visitors and each year the numbers increase, a combination of first timers and people returning for the experience year after year.

Museum makeover Bringing chess to life

ELCHE’S famous palm museum is getting a facelift, timed to prepare the city for October’s visit from the National Heritage Council at the end of October. There is a budget of €10,000 for the improvement and cleaning works; these are set to include new panelling and a general remodelling of the museum which

most agree is due to an overhaul. Cultural Councillor for the city, Patricia Macia, said that it was important that Elche looked its best for the visit which will address the cities heritage status. Other works around the town are also in the pipeline, Ms Macia confirmed.

Shopping night YOU may still be in time to catch Javea’s first shopping night of the summer which is this evening (27 July). Held in the Old Town, more than 30 outlets will take part with special offers and extended opening hours. There are plenty of other things going on including a disco from 9pm at Plaza del Convent and a

children’s painting workshop from 7pm. Chamber music is also planned and plenty of food and drink for when you have had your fill of shopping. If you can’t make this evening there is another shopping night planned for 17 August.

THE XXII edition of Javea’s Living Chess performance will take place this Saturday, 28 July. The theme this year is “Alice in Wonderland”, a book with plenty of references to the ancient board game. The performance features a play, updated to current times and against

a background of school bullying. Various actors will play parts from the play on a giant chess board in an adaption written by Raquel Violero and Hector Cruanes. Over a hundred people will be involved in various parts on stage or off stage, including musicians,

singers, dancers, extras and the 40 local students who will perform the chess piece roles. The main event is at 10.30 on Saturday night on Avenida Lepanto. There are also various related events on the Friday and Sunday – contact the Javea tourist board for further information.

Motor show bigger than ever DETAILS have been released to the press of this year’s Expo Motor Denia, which runs on the weekend of 6 and 7 October. The show’s site will cover 7,000 square metres running from Glorieta del Pais Valencia, via the Marques de Campo and ending at the port area. The exhibition continues to be the largest in the northern Alicante area and this year organisers expect to have at least 33 vehicle exhibitors representing more than 20 international car and vehicle brands. In 2017 18,000 visitors came to the show, and this year they are confident of surpassing that number.

Cinema on the streets Young Lions arrive OLIVA is repeating its “Cinema als barris” cycle of movies throughout the summer. Giant screens are set up on different dates in barrios across the town, starting on 1 August with “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” the hugely successful Harry Potter spin-

off. This will be screened at Placa de Sant Roc, by the church. 8 August is “My Friend the Giant” at Placa del Riuet dels Frares and 14 August sees “The Minions Movie” in the grounds of El Pinet School. “Tadeo Jones 2: The Secret of King Midas” is

being shown at La Carrasca School’s playground on 22 August and the cycle ends on 29 August with “Les Parelles” on Calle San Vicent. All films are family friendly and will be in Spanish unless shown in the VOS version. Contact Oliva Tourist information for further information.

YOUNGSTERS from 16 countries are in Benidorm for the Lions Clubs second Costa Blanca Camp, organised by the Benidorm Lions Club. On their arrival, they were greeted by Mayor Toni Perez and several councillors and members of the association. In a speech welcoming the

group, Mr Perez said: “In a way, we are much like the Lions; an international city with 135 nationalities, living together peacefully.” The youngsters will be staying for two weeks at the Lope de Vega International School and will use Benidorm as a

base to explore much of the Costa Blanca and Alicante province. Planned trips include Elche, L’Alfas del Pi, Callosa d’en Sarria, El Campello, Guadalest and Alicante City as well as museums and other places of interest in Benidorm itself.

The lowdown on Benidorm Low Festival by Andy Mansell

Thousands of music fans are expected to descend on Benidorm this weekend for the three-day Low festival, which takes place in the Guillermo Amor Football Stadium. Now in its tenth year, the popular event has become one of the biggest on the Spanish music festival calendar, bringing together acts from across the spectrum of musical genres, from Indie to Rock, Folk, Country,

Electronic and Pop. This year’s headliners include British bands Editors, making a third visit t o

Low after bringing the house down in 2010 and 2014, The Chemical Brothers and Biffy Clyro plus French Indie giants Phoenix. Chilean band Izal will be making their first appearance in Benidorm for three years, premiering songs from their latest album Autoterapia. Spanish acts include, La Plata, Ivan

Ferreiro and Santiago Auseron and Sra Robinson, plus local bands were chosen by festival organisers from entrants in the Emerge competition held in Alicante during early June. Originally called Lo Cost Festival, the event began in 2009 with a three day festival in the port of Alicante, but moved the following year, to Benidorm, where three stages were erected in the resorts Parque L’Aiguera and 45,000 people attended. In 2011, the festival moved to its current home in the Foietes area of Benidorm and in 2014, the organisers changed the name to Low Festival, as the performers on stage became bigger and more well known. Over the years, acts as varied as Franz Ferdinand, Kasabian, The Hives, Kaiser Chiefs, Portishead, Massive Attack, Mika and home favourite Fangoria have graced the Low Festivals stages. More than 83,000 attendees watched 2017’s line up and with only a few hundred tickets still

available, the sold-out signs are expected to be hung up again this year. All VIP tickets, w h i c h include the use of the Olympic s i z e swimming pool, have already been snapped up, so act quickly if you’re tempted by the headline acts Phoenix o n

Difficult summer ahead AS had been feared by many industry insiders, Benidorm has had one of the slowest starts to its summer season for several years. The resurgence of markets such as Turkey, Tunisia and Egypt is being blamed for the slowdown, with resorts there able to offer holiday deals that if matched here would lose money due to higher costs of labour and other products in Spain. Cheap deals previously lacked appeal in countries that tourists saw as unstable and even dangerous but a period of relative calm has seen people return; terrorism, such as the Barcelona

Bike ride ends in chopper trip

A girl who was cycling with her parents last weekend had to be airlifted out by helicopter after suffering a nasty fall. The group were on the Benitatxell

attacks, also means that mainland Europe is now seen by many as not being as safe as it used to be for travellers. Benidorm had 89% capacity in the first half of July, the lowest since 2014 when the country was still coming out of a deep recession. The British, although still the main source of visitors, have been keeping away in worrying numbers, staying an estimated 300,000 nights less than last year. The figures come from hoteliers association Hosbec, which also blames the illegal rental markets for impacting on legitimate hoteliers.

Post-summer Stompers THE non-profit group Costa Blanca Concerts are once again welcoming a world quality jazz band to the Costa Blanca as the New Orleans Stompers take in two local venues as part of a threedate Spanish tour this autumn. The seven-piece ensemble, celebrating their 25th anniversary, play classic New Orleans jazz and are led by trumpeter Gunnar Sachs with the fabulous tenor voice of Joshua Stewart up front. As many residents in this area leave their

adopted towns at the height of the summer, Costa Blanca Concerts have asked that early notice of the dates are published in “The Weekender”. We are always happy to oblige, and after the Palma de Mallorca date on 5 October the Stompers are closer to home with dates at Teulada’s Auditorio on 6 October and the Forum Nostrum in Alfaz del Pi on 7 October. Early bookings or enquiries can be made through Wilhelmina Hardee on 639 371 625.

called out. They decided she should be helicoptered out as a precaution and she was then flown to a nearby medical centre where she was checked over.

It was an exciting day for English football fans on 11th July, with England playing in the semi-finals of the World Cup. Attendance at the Charity Night for Stroke Association Spain at El Paraiso Restaurant was down on expectations, but with three TV screens showing the match, the 110 people who did attend were

able to follow the game. The band, Best of British, provided great entertainment, despite having to compete with the football at the beginning of their performance. It was quite entertaining itself to watch the band members taking sneaky looks at the TV screens whilst playing.

Patrons were generous, as always, and the event raised 622.75 euros for the charity. This will go a long way to provide equipment and supplies for stroke sufferers. The next charity night will be on Thursday, 18th October, with the very popular, WOODY. Another great night guaranteed.

Fire narrowly The beach is such a ‘BOAR‘ avoids gas stations THE full force of the provincial firefighting teams was called out last Thursday as a fire threatened two petrol stations and affected visibility on the N-332 and AP-7. The level 1 alert saw air units, two specialised forest fire teams and two fire engines as well as seven vehicles from the Denia and Benissa stations attending. The N-332 was closed in both directions between Pedreguer and Gata while the blaze was fought and

by Simon Russell

considerable amounts of smoke were also affecting the AP-7 motorway. Authorities declared the fire as stabilised after about three hours. A discarded cigarette from a vehicle is being seen as a possible cause, and drivers are urged to take extreme caution in the very dry conditions. Social media postings of the incident included a seaplane filling its tanks off a busy Denia beach.

Sunbathers on a quiet stretch of Villajoyosa beach were stunned when a Wild Boar joined them earlier this week. Surprised to see the animal swimming in the sea just offshore, one of the bathers on the secluded Bol Nou beach alerted local police officers who arrived on the scene

by Andy Mansell

swiftly. Unfortunately for the hapless officers, the boar evaded their attempts at capture and led them on a chase up and down the beach, to the great amusement of the onlooking sun worshippers. The wild animal eventually

made a dash for freedom by heading away from the water towards the beach entrance and off into the surrounding countryside, leaving the breathless officers in its wake. As the whole incident was recorded by one of the witnesses and quickly posted onto Youtube, the boar has become an overnight sensation

on social media pages. However, Villajoyosa town hall was quick to issue a statement reminding people that animals were not allowed on their beaches, whilst assuring bathers that incidents of this type were very rare as no colonies of wild boar are known to live in the vicinity of the municipality.

Tidy beach campaign underway RA Benidorm, the concessionary company in charge of the resort’s beaches, is collaborating with the town council on a campaign aiming to

remind users of the beach to keep it tidy and free from rubbish. Under the slogan “Do not forget your belongings” in English and Spanish the simple aim is

to gently remind people about picking up after them before they leave the sands for the day. The most common things left behind are cigarette butts, bottle

tops, plastic containers and ice lolly sticks. The campaign has started on Poniente Beach and will move to Levante Beach during August.

Summer contact lens care advice 1. Take care with air conditioning Air conditioning can dry out your eyes, making them feel itchy and irritated and this is a particular issue for contact lens wearers. Switch air conditioning off where possible and avoid fans and air jets pointed directly towards the eyes to control this. Eye drops can help keep your eyes hydrated if this is a problem for you over summer. 2. Remember to remove them before swimming It is tempting to just dive into the pool or sea on a hot summer’s day, but exposing your contact lenses to water is risky. This is because water is full of bacteria including an ameba called acanthamoeba. If this gets under your contact lens and multiplies it will irritate your eye and can cause aserious infection which can lead to permanent visual impairment or blindness. Of course this is rare, but it is important to take the risk seriously and remove contact lenses before swimming. If you swim a lot, it’s worth investing in prescription swimming goggles to protect your eyes and maintain good vision. 3. Don’t forget your sunglasses

Summer is a time when many people use contact lenses, for flexibility, the freedom to play sports, choose the sunglasses they want, or to dress to impress at all the summer events. However, summer can be a tough time for contact lenses due to the heat and endless days at the pool or the beach, so we’ve asked Louise Stone, from Specsavers OpticasCalpe and Javea for their advice on how to use contact lenses this summer.

A key benefit to contact lenses in summer months is that you don’t need prescription sunglasses, and you don’t have to keep switching between your normal glasses and sunglasses. However, most contact lenses don’t protect the eyes from the powerful UV rays at this time of the year, so it’s important to always wear good quality sunglasses with 100% UV protection whenever you’re out in the sun. SpecsaversOpticas have just launched their new easyvisionaquiane daily disposable lenses. These innovative silicone hydrogel lenses were made with comfort in mind, providing everyday value, convenience and health benefits for just 16,50€ for a box of 30 lenses. For more information and to find your nearest store visit www.specsavers.es

Drop Quotes are similar to cryptograms, in that the goal is for the solver to uncover a hidden quote. A black-and-white crossword-style grid is set up for each quote, with a number of letters “hovering” above each column. Your task is to “drop” each of those letters into the appropriate square in each column, until the entire quote is revealed. All punctuation (commas, periods, dashes, etc.) has been removed. Good luck!

Summer bowling at Javea Green Bowls

Summer bowling is alive and well at Javea Green Bowls Club as the annual Taylor Trophy Evening Triples and now Pairs ends its third week and already favourites are emerging - more of that later. This year there has been a change of format to this popular event, which gives players the option to play either Triples on a Monday and/or

Pairs on a Thursday. Whatever evening is chosen there are two games of 10 ends played, with a BBQ break in between - what’s not to like!! So who is riding high in the league table at the end of week 3, well actually its Team ‘Who?’ currently topping the leader board with a shot difference of 67, followed by ‘Magners’ with a 28 shot difference closely

followed by ‘Los Bandidos’ at 26 – all 3 teams have won 8 and lost 4 of their games so far. With another 6 weeks of play to go the competition is still wide open as no one team has managed to draw away with a convincing lead as yet, so the next few matches will probably start to separate the wheat from the chaff, the question is who

will make the breakaway? Or will it stay neck and neck all the way to the finish line! As always thanks must go to the Organisers whose hard work ensures we can all keep bowling through the summer season. Well done Keith and Dee Hamilton who runs the Monday Evening Triples and Ken Davey who takes care of the Thursday Pairs.

Another Triple Tie at El Plantio 2

Another enthralling team competition saw the second triple tie in two weeks in El Plantio 2’s Texas Scramble Threes. Five teams of three members commenced a ‘Shotgun Start’ on 24th July. Three of these teams finished with a gross score of Fifty shots. The winning team (6 Birdies/2 Bogies) did so by virtue of a higher handicap of 0.1. The team finishing second (7 Birdies/3 Bogies) had an identical handicap as the team finishing third (5 Birdies/1 Bogie ) but had a better last nine holes on Count Back (25 shots against 26). Nearest the pins – Hole 1, Alan Janes – Hole 4, Ian(I don’t like Hole 4) Henderson. Third Place, Alan Janes, Mike Davies, David Swann

- Av. H/Cap 4.5 – 45.5 shots. Second Place, Ian Henderson, Rod Loveday, Henry Mellor - Av. H/Cap 4.5 – 45.5 shots (C/B). First Place, John O’Brien, Bryan Watson, Lawrence Wanty - Av. H/ Cap 4.6 – 45.4 shots. If anyone would like to join our Society, we play at El Plantio Golf Club every Tuesday, Friday and Sunday. We use both courses the Par 3 nine hole course and the main 18 hole course, so we cater for all abilities. The membership rates are very competitive, so call for more details. Anyone who wishes to play in the Society as a guest or join as a new member, contact Ian Henderson on 966 716 616 or 636 116 230

San Miguel Golf Society at Villamartin

Pego Golf Society match On a very hot day we had 30 players for a Yellow Ball Competition, an event that can test friendships to the limit! We had one guest, Richard Pike, joining us from Madrid. The winning team with an incredible 177 points was John Guest, Roger Brown, Jim Hayward and Fiona Sankey. Well done, you left everyone else far behind. Second with a very creditable 158 points was the team of Michel Grin, Malcolm Wise, Penny Barden and that great player A. Ghost. We had two Match Plays today: Brian Barden beat Malcolm Cannon comfortably (so the score sheet

says) and Donna Green beat the usually invincible Steve Patton 3 and 2. Nearest the pin on hole 5 was Donna again with 2.03m and on hole 16 Brian again with 1.45m. There were two 2s today, both won by our Vice Captain Bill Pike. There was an unusually low number of 55 in the Balls in the Water competition. Nobody guessed correctly so a card draw was won by a very happy David Blakely. Next week we have a Singles Stableford Competition. If you wish to play as a guest, subject to Handicap, please contact Penny Barden on pegohandicapsec@gmail.com.

On a stifling hot day that would have caused Beau Geste to pull a sickie, 33 members and 3 guests trooped their way to Villamartin. It is actually pronounced “Beeyamarteen” but this is of no importance to those ex-pats who believe saying “cheeso” and “toasto” is displaying a fine command of the local language. As per usual, greens and fairways were in excellent condition hence no excuses for a poor score. Well, okay, some of the tees resembled dried out bogs but other than that it was no surprise that scoring was on the high side. Bronze category winner,

Norman Padmore, recorded a mammoth 41 points to win round 5 of the President’s Trophy. Silver winner, Alan McDonald, who makes Foghorn Leghorn seem a melancholic introvert, scored a magnificent 38 points. The Scot, euphemistically described as over-nourished, has shed kilos in recent weeks and hopefully the sight of a lopsided buggy trundling the fairways – or more usually, the rough – may be a thing of the past.

The day’s results, by category and in reverse order, were the following: Bronze: 3rd Kyrre Skarsmoen (36), 2nd Ian Par-

kinson (37), 3rd Norman Padmore (41) Silver Category: 3rd Mike Greatorex (35), Bjorn Petterson (36), Alan McDonald (38) Gold Category: 3rd Robin Eastman (40 on CB), Tony Smale (40 on CB), 1st Eva Petterson (40) Nearest the pins went to Darren Hancock, Norman Cahill, Eva Petterson and Micky Roscoe. Best guest prize was Russ Bond with a great 36. John Osborne was the overall winner of the President’s Trophy, amassing 114 over the best 3 rounds of 5. The Trophy and round winners’ t-shirts

were sponsored by Moneycorp who also generously sponsored the nearest the pins and best guest prizes. Brendan Toner won this week’s Abacus prize for the lowest number of points. Our thanks to the staff at Villamartin for their contribution to the day. Thanks also to The Ale House in Villamartin Plaza for hosting our apres-golf presentation. Keep up to date with all SMGS matters by logging on to our website www.smgs.org or simply give Tony Smale a call on 628227687. The next three games will be at La Finca, Roda and Vistabella.

Las Ramblas Golf & Social Society Report played the ‘counter’ game, which involves teams of four players, the twist being you don’t know how many scores to count until after the hole has been played. Taking top spot, with 97 points, were husband and wife Alan and Olga Douglas together with their grandson Connah Judson. Making up the numbers was Bryan Neal. Connah, at the age Monday’s result turned out of just 23 and playing off to be a real family affair. We a 5 handicap, achieved an

individual score of 42 points! Wednesday’s result was even more spectacular. Our regular Stableford competition had the variation that all players went off the red tees (bet they won’t do that at Carnoustie)! With 48 points and surely a new record, picking up the claret jug (well about 13 euros actually) was that man again, John Dobson. Worthy of an each way bet were Pedro Dunn, Rod Doel and Alan Douglas. Alan was

also the only player to get a ‘2’ today and probably took home more prize money than our winner! And so into the final round of the week… Friday’s game was the best two scores out of four on each hole but all to count on the par fives. With 103 points ‘Birthday boy’ Rod Doel was on the leader board again this week alongside Ken and Liz Robinson and Marleen Billen.
