HONEYMOON
HOMICIDE
A 45-YEAR OLD Spanish woman, known as Conchi, who is accused of killing her husband of two weeks, had to be carried into an Alicante courthouse yesterday by two National Police officers, after claiming she could not walk. Unconfirmed reports said that Conchi had been married three times before and that one of her previous husbands had met a violent death. Her fourth marriage to a 69-year-old man, a lorry driver from Santander, took place in Sax earlier this month. Conchi apparently needed a wheelchair to get around, but she allegedly mustered enough energy to stand
by Simon Russell
up to hold her new partner in a car park in the La Albufereta area of Alicante on Monday evening, whilst her 58-year-old male health carer, who has also been charged in connection
with the killing, allegedly stabbed him with a screwdriver. Unfortunately for both of them, the fatal incident was witnessed by an offduty policeman, who prevented the duo from fleeing, and summoned
the help of officers. The victim’s body was discovered lying between two parked cars with fatal bleeds from neck and chest wounds, with Conchi standing up next to the corpse. Reports yesterday
suggested that Conchi spotted a group of journalists gathered outside the courthouse, and said that she was unable to walk into the courthouse, which is when the police officers decided to give her a helping hand.

Pensions – what’s the value of yours?
In all the years that I have been advising people on transferring pensions, I have never seen such astronomical transfer values, especially in the finance, manufacturing and retail industries.
In the past, Final Salary pensions were seen as the ‘gold plated’ pension option, however, over recent years, opinions have changed dramatically. Many UK schemes have unprecedented levels of debt and transfer offers are at
all-time highs. Transferring away from your final salary pension has never been so popular, with 10,000s of applications each year.
It was due to a similar article over a year ago that my client contacted me. He had worked as a store supervisor in a leading supermarket chain, and had no idea what his pension options were. He was 52 years of age and wanted to start thinking about when he could retireand
what his annual pension would be.
After initially meeting with him, I sent off for a transfer value, and a few weeks later I was sat back in front of him.In short, he could expect an annual pension of £10,200 at the age of 60, or, he could leave the scheme with a pot of £350,000, or approximately 35 times his annual pension. There are lots of factors that need to be considered before deciding if a transfer is right for you, however, for this client, the high transfer value, along with being able to retire 5 years early, were significant. I was happy to recommend that we movehis £350,000 transfer offer into a UK based private pension, andhave his pension funds managed by a well-known, FTSE 100 company. He would not only have full, flexible access to this pot from 55, but should anything happen to him, his entire pot of £350k would be left to his loved ones, something that his final salary scheme did not offer. This isn’t an isolated case, I’ve seen pension values, especially from banks, retail and manufacturing companies,as high as 40 times the annual pension.I will

A small local cove that is ideal for young children to bathe in safely is being made virtually inaccessible as the owners of boats and other small vessels are using the space as a free long term mooring
TWO children who were reported missing from the northern town of Zaragoza have been found safe and well in Alicante. The pair, aged five and ten, had been reported by their mother as missing last week. The boy’s father, an Algerian national, could not be contacted and it was suspected he had kidnapped the youngsters and may have been planning to take them to Algeria without their mother’s consent. A nationwide alert was sent to all ports, airports and other places where the group may have been able to leave Spain. A SAN JAVIER woman is taking legal action against a council after she was thrown out of a municipal swimming pool for wearing swimming shorts, as opposed to panties, with her bikini. Gemma Rodriquez has filed a complaint with the Guardia Civil in San Javier, after she and her partner, as well as their 18-month-old daughter, were told to leave the pool at Pilar de la Horadada because of Gemma’s “unacceptable” clothing. Staff at the pool regarded the shorts as non-appropriate swimming attire, but Gemma pointed out that they are no different from what many men wear at the pool, and that it was blatant discrimination. Regulations from Pilar council suggest that female bathers have to wear a swimsuit or bikini with “panties”, and that the shorts broke the dress code. Gemma posted the costume on social media, adding that it was especially

distressing for her toddler to witness her being thrown out of the pool area by the lifeguard and the
facility’s concierge, who she said both were both heavy-handed. She has asked for an official apology from Pilar council, as well as the dismissal of the two pool workers.

Driving through changes THERE are some new traffic regulations coming into effect for vehicles on Spain’s roads. Newly registered rental cars and vehicles such as taxis will have to have blue rear number plates to distinguish them from private vehicles. Vehicles already on the road in this category have a year to adapt.
Monster mouth on display
Cars broken down on the roadside now have the option of using a yellow luminous light to increase visibility while they are awaiting recovery. The third major change concerns the environment, specifically air quality. A new category, Category E, is to be added to measure the impact of vehicles on air pollution levels. ELCHE’S Museum of Palaeontology now has a striking new exhibit, a giant mouth of the largest species of shark that ever lived. The exhibit contains four
by Simon Russell
original fossilised teeth from the Carcharocles megalodon shark that were found in Elche when the area would
have been underwater several million years ago. The megalodon grew to an estimated 11 metres – 36 feet in old money or the length of about three cars. The teeth are 10 centimetres long and heavily serrated, indicating that the creature was a meat eater as opposed to the larger species of shark still around today which sieve plankton. The long-gone shark species is the inspiration behind this summer’s blockbuster movie “The Meg” where a giant megalodon has survived extinction and is after human prey.
The great escape
The parents of a four-yearold boy who “escaped” from summer school and made his own way home have expressed their concerns that the incident could have been far more serious. Little Neizan left the school, based on a farm in Beniarbeig, and walked almost a kilometre to his family home in the town. His parents were home at the time but understandably surprised to see him at the front door as they were about to go and collect him. His unscheduled stroll
by Simon Russell
involved crossing roads and going down a narrow country lane amid the dangers presented by traffic and strangers. They believe that Neizan got out through a hole in the fence at the school and have spoken to them about the incident. The directors have apologised profusely and said that this is the first time in 35 years such a thing has happened; they believe their site is safe but have promised a review of security.
Home Eventually!
SALVAGE experts have refloated a luxury motor boat that sank with six British holidaymakers nearly a fortnight ago. The tourists, including two children, had to abandon the Chloe Helena, when it hit a

rock off La Barraca beach in Javea earlier in the month. The one million euro vessel was refloated and eventually towed back to its base at Denia Marina, but not without some
problems after the tugboat broke down. A Maritime Rescue boat, the Salvamar Diphda, helped out the tugboat, and then towed the Chloe Marina to some moorings, ahead of the journey back home to Denia.
WhatsApp saves the day A hiker who got lost in the Barranc de la Font (Alicante) last week was rescued using the messaging service WhatsApp. The 53-year-old had phoned the emergency services after he realised he had taken a wrong turn and night was falling. A tech-savvy
agent registered the man’s number on his WhatsApp and through this application was able to pinpoint the exact location of the hiker. A rescue vehicle came to his aid and the man had no injuries, although he was not adequately equipped had he needed to spend a night outside.
Every cloud has a silver lining The management team at the Portal de la Marina shopping centre in Ondara said that the 16 August was probably their busiest day of the year so far, at least in terms of visitor numbers. The day was a fiesta but most peoples planned trip to the beach or pool was thwarted by the bad weather and opted for a day’s shopping instead. However there were reports of extensive queues at the access to the centre, a notorious road for tailbacks at busy periods while parking was also a problem for later arrivals. It is too early to say whether the money spent was reflected in the high number of visitors.
Bad taste Balconing posters
A series of black humour posters mocking the recent deaths of young British tourists falling from balconies, have appeared on the streets of Barcelona during the past week. Written in broken English, the yellow posters scattered across the city read: “Dear Tourist. Did you know balconing? Prevents gentrification, improves neighbors’ quality of life, reduces the risk of heart disease, is LOTS of fun.” The distasteful artwork is believed to be the work of a group of anti-tourist campaigners claiming that excessive tourism in the city is driving up rental prices and pushing out local businesses. Balconing is a mock English word used to describe jumping from balcony to balcony or from a balcony into a swimming pool. Accidents during such activities, and other falls from balconies, have claimed the lives of a number of people, mainly tourists, in recent years, including the unresolved case of Kirsty Maxwell, who fell from a Benidorm balcony last year.
by Andy Mansell
Most posters reportedly appeared in the popular tourist spot of Vallcarca, near ParcGuell, which features work by the architect Antoni Gaudi. The Catalan capital, like many major tourist cities throughout the World such as Amsterdam, Venice, Rome, Sydney and San Francisco has struggled with the phenomenon of over tourism in recent years since the advent of budget airlines and cheap flights made short city breaks highly popular. Compounded by unlicenced tourist accommodation, such as AirBnb and Instagram friendly sights encouraging groups of young people to head for these popular cities, a backlash was bound to occur eventually. However, as innocent as the posters appear to be, they have caused fury amongst British tourists and Barcelona citizens alike for making fun of tragic deaths which affect families and loved ones of the victims for a lifetime. In fact Spain has seen six Balconing deaths this summer already, the latest

victim had spent just a few hours in Palma de Mallorca in the Balearic Islands before he died. The 23-year-old German man had travelled to the island for a vacation with his friends near Palma beach. Returning to his hotel on Monday evening, the 23-year-old went to the 12th floor of the hotel he was staying at and, under the effects of a yet-to-bedetermined toxic substance, fell from one of the windows in a corridor. He landed in the interior courtyard and died. In Barcelona, unhappy users of social media were quick to express their revulsion at the posters taking to Twitter to blast their insensitivity. One user said they made a mockery of the deaths, while a Spanish user said they had “crossed the line” and another wrote “Hey, balconing people, this is not funny”. A spokeswoman for Barcelona City Council said: “We reject these incidents and above all the message. They will be removed by the municipal cleaning services.”
The Uncivil Guardia A GANG that pretended to be Guardia Civil officers to rob drug dealers, has been rounded up by the real Guardia in an extensive operation stretching across the Vega Baja and Murcia regions. Eight people, including a woman, were arrested with all bar one of them being Spanish nationals. The other person detained was a Romanian man. Six homes including premises in Orihuela, Albatera, and San Isidro, were raided by the Guardia in Operation Trabica, with a variety of charges laid down including robbery with violence, drug trafficking, possessing

firearms, and impersonating public officials. Two of those arrested were denied bail by a Murcia court. The gang would wear Guardia Civil badges and vests to “raid” homes owned bv criminals where drugs were being grown, and seize the products for themselves, as they brandished guns and tasers at their victims. Large amounts of marijuana, ecstasy, and cocaine were seized during Opeation Trabica, along with guns and ammunition, Guardia clothing and IDs, plus high-end cars and cash.

Beach security tips

Cruises keep tourist numbers afloat
by Andy Mansell
Thinking of heading to the beach this weekend, but worried about keeping your mobile phone, cash and valuables safe? Then why not take a tip from your friendly Guardia Civil public relations department. A recent tweet posted on the security force’s official twitter account suggests that camouflaging your belongings inside everyday beach items
is an ideal way of avoiding the attention of thieves intent on relieving you of your worldly goods. The light-hearted message shows a photo of a bottle of sun cream typical of the ones taken to the beach every day by sunbathers. However, take a closer look and you will discover, the bottle is actually empty of it’s contents of sunscreen. Instead, the nozzle has been cut off, allowing the user to fill it with their mobile phone and valuables, such as cash, credit cards, keys, watch and jewellery.
Drones to the rescue DRONES saved three bathers who got into difficulties off a Valencian beach last weekend in two separate incidents which occurred at Puerto de Sagunt, a beach known for its dangerous riptides.

purchased two of the flying lifeguards at a cost of €20,000 before the start of the season,
specifically because of their value in helping people trapped by riptides.
VISITORS from cruise ships to Alicante City have helped compensate for a drop in foreign tourists in the first half of the peak season. Stays from Spanish nationals were also up, but the drop in tourists from abroad is a concern, blamed mainly on cheap packages from other Mediterranean countries. During July hotel occupation stood at slightly under 90%,

similar to 2017. Although cruise visitors don’t stay overnight, they do tend to spend a lot of money in shops, bars and restaurants in the city when they come ashore, said Tourism Councillor Mari Carmen de Espana. Santa Barbara Castle is also a popular destination for day trippers, although the council admits accessibility needs to be improved.
Edible straws among eco moves DENIA based ferry and shipping company Balearia continues to push its environmental agenda, this time by introducing eco-friendly single use utensils on its passenger ferries. They are the first maritime firm to use edible straws in their bars and eateries, which are 100% natural and fully biodegradable for those who don’t want to consume them.
by Simon Russell
They are also starting to use biodegradable materials on glasses, napkins, tablecloths, spoons, straws and other single use items. Balearia has recently introduced other environmentally friendly procedures such as “green furniture”, manufactured from rubbish generated onboard the boat.

Summer showers welcomed British firm leads fitness boom
ONE of the UK’s largest gymnasium chains is to open three new centres in Valencia City, all of them planned to be ready for business by the end of this October. Synergym are opening the facilities near Gran Via Marques, Calle Perez Galdos and Avenida del Puerto, adding to their existing ten outlets already in Spain. Spain has come late to the fitness boom compared with much of Europe and
by Simon Russell
North America, partly as their outdoor lifestyle and enjoyment of organised sports means that gyms aren’t the only way of keeping fit. However they are now springing up everywhere and Synergym have said they plan to open 100 centres across Spain, including half a dozen in Valencia. They also now have a Spanish head office, based in Malaga.
THE recent heavy rains across the Alicante region that put a bit of a dampener on some peoples holiday plans for a couple of days, even closing some beaches, has been welcomed by other groups. The most immediate impact was on the risk of a forest fire which reduced from a regular forecast of high to one of low – although this will creep back up if we have another warm dry spell. Farmers and gardeners also welcomed the news as crops and gardens received a muchneeded soaking. Perhaps the most important but least apparent benefit was the drop in air pollution levels. Meteorologists say that the prolonged very warm weather had made the tropospheric levels – sometimes known as “bad ozone” – dangerously high. This air pollution kills an estimated 18,000 people annually across the EU, around 1,800 of them in Spain. The cooler, breezier and damper weather all served to bring the pollution down to much safer levels, at least for the time being.
Elderly couple pulled from flames A husband and wife in their nineties were rescued from a house fire in Alcoy last week. The emergency services were alerted to the blaze in central Alcoy which was in an apartment block. The building was evacuated but neighbours said that the elderly couple were not mobile and would be trapped in their apartment.
The police were first on the scene and were able to smash down the couple’s door amidst thick smoke. The man and woman were then safely evacuated and taken to the local hospital for treatment for smoke inhalation. It is thought that the fire started due to an electrical fault somewhere in the building.
Man who shaped Javea remembered ONE of Javea’s plazas is to be dedicated to Vicente Bisquert Riera, the man many feel has been responsible for the town’s unique look. Known during his life as Vicent de Gracia, Riera was a sculptor, historian and architect who brought the iconic Tosca stonework to his home town, something that Javea would become known for. His sculptures and designs grace areas such as Plaza de
la Iglesia, the San Bartolome fortress and San Juan cemetery with gargoyles, fountains, arches and monuments among others. Plaza del Loreto is the square that will now bear Riera’s name, pending a plenary vote which is expected to pass the motion. The plaza contains two of his most famous works, the Lady Loreto Fountain and the monument of the covered cross.

Mobile campers moving on out
Twenty illegally parked campervan owners had a rude awakening earlier this week, when they were awoken to the sound of police officers knocking on their doors. The motorhomes were camping on scrub land at Agua Amarga, near to the Urbanova development on the outskirts of Alicante city in the direction of the airport.
by Andy Mansell
Local Police officers, were complying with a new ruling given last Monday by the mayor of Alicante, the popular Luis Barcala, who ordered the evacuation. From early morning last Tuesday, three local policemen (who later called for further reinforcements)
appeared in the area of Agua Amarga with the aim clearing the area of overnight camping by motorhome users. “We are informing the owners of the ban on access to this area with campervans, especially since the regulations have been hardened,” said the police chief, confirming the operation will continue into the weekend when more campervans are expected to arrive in Agua Amarga. During the inspection, the officers evicted a motorhome that was, according to its owner (of German origin), illegally camped for the previous six months. However, according to agents, most people usually spend shorter periods, normallya week in summer and every weekend. They also ordered the withdrawal of two abandoned vehicles and a third that lacked insurance. “For now we have not carried out sanctions, we are only informing users. However, if they return to the area with the caravans they will be fined”, confirmed the police chief.

Majority happy with public services
TWO thirds of people in Elche have said they are happy with the city’s public services – or one third are unhappy with them depending on your outlook. The findings are froma study by Spain’s Urban Services Observatory and places satisfaction levels slightly above the national average. Rubbish collection comes out top with 72% of people satisfied, followed
by water supplies at 69%, a large improvement on the 2017 survey. Over 5,000 people completed the survey which the Observatory conducts across Spain’s 30 largest cities to give a national measure of public services in major municipalities. The results show that “in general residents of Elche are happy with the public services offered” concluded the report.
Vodka binge leads to child abuse
A 17-year-old has been arrested and accused of the abuse of two girls aged 12 and 14 after the three of them had become intoxicated on an urbanisation in Benidoleig. All three were on holiday and the youth had obtained a bottle of vodka to celebrate the last day of his vacation. The group got drunk over the course of the morning and it is alleged that the youth then took advantage of their

condition to sexually abuse the young girls. The victim’s families became aware of the incident and reported it at the local police station in Pedreguer. Later that same day the Guardia Civil tracked the boy to his home in Riba-roja near Valencia. As he is also a minor it is unclear at this stage what charges he will face.

Bike lanes only for scooters
VALENCIA City Council looks set to pass a new regulation restricting the use of electric scooters in the city. They are likely to be classified in similar ways to bicycles and their riders will have to use one of the cities many bike lanes to get around or face a fine. The one, two and three-wheeled vehicles are a relatively new phenomenon and there are concerns that they are a danger to pedestrians as their riders currently tend to use the pavements. Many other cities and tourist area such as Benidorm have also seen a rise in the use of the scooters, often hired out to tourists by firms for anything from a few hours to a week at a time.

TRIPLE SMASH
THREE people were injured after two cars and a van collided on the N-340 close to the tunnel to the north of Orihuela City. The incident happened last Friday afternoon, with two of the vehicles colliding head-on, whilst a third was unable to avoid hitting them after the initial crash. One of the drivers had to be freed by firefighters and was transferred to Orihuela’s Vega Baja hospital in a serious, but not life-threatening, condition.
Assaulted, threatened and soaked
A security patrol who were first on the scene after an emergency call regarding domestic abuse were greeted by a young woman with ripped clothes who was soaking wet. The 27-year-old said she had been hit and threatened by her 40-year-old partner who also threw water over her as part of a prolonged assault. Her clothes had been slashed with a knife by the assailant. The couple had a fivemonth-old baby which had been in the same room throughout the incident, which occurred in the small Valencian town of Almassora. The agents detained the man until the Guardia Civil arrived and charged him. The victim was able to remain in the house with her infant.
Big grant to help repair fire damage THE Ministry of Agriculture has awarded a sum of €750,000 to help repair some of the extensive damage caused by the forest fires in the Gandia area earlier this month. Occurring just a few days before the storms across the region significantly reduced the risk of outbreaks, the blaze affected 3,000 hectares of land, causing a mass evacuation of thousands and the destruction of several homes and smallholdings. 800 firefighters alongside 30 helicopters and planes fought the fire for several days amidst strong winds threatening to make things even worse. The grant will be used for repairing eroded soil, reforestation, stabilising unsafe areas such as ravines, repairing forest roads and other restoration work as required. The €750,000 constitutes an emergency payment; the full extent of the amount of money needed to get the area back to something like its original state will not be known until a full report has been made after a survey of the stricken area.

AN ELCHE judge has blocked a move to immediately ban dogs from two recently designated beach areas of Torrevieja. Punta Margalla and Cala del Moro were opened to canines earlier in the summer, but residents in the Cala del Moro area staged protests against the Torrevieja council move, and decided to take legal action. A court ruled against the move to suspend the two beaches being used by dogs on the basis that the council had “provisionally”designated the beaches on a temporary basis, ahead of a local referendum on the matter that would happen at the same time as next May’s municipal elections. The court also said that because of the provisional nature of the beaches, no permanent harm would be done to local residents who have raised objections, and that Torrevieja council had acted in the “general interest” of a large number of citizens in the city. The lawsuit, in terms of examining the full complexities of the issue, can in theory start being processed from next month, but it will only be maintained if legal funding from dog beach opponents is maintained, with the suggestion that any final ruling could take years to be adjudicated.
DOG BID FAILS
Patience exhausted AROUND 150 residents of a coastal area of Torrevieja between Mar Azul and Cala Ferris staged a protest last Sunday over what they claim to be a constant neglect of the area by successive council administrations. The demonstrators brandished posters asking the Torrevieja mayor, José Manuel Dolón, what their taxes are being spent on, some two months after meeting him to voice their concerns. The group say the area has been “abandoned” by the authority, and that they are tired of broken promises like plans to build a footpath between Los Náufragos beach and the Rocío del Mar. Any new pathway is the responsibility of the Environment
by Simon Russell
ministry, but the protestors say that the council has not pushed strongly enough for it. The list of complaints include pedestrian crossings that need to be have their markings repainted; a refurbishment of a local play area; the state of wasteland between La Valeta and Cala Ferris; and a call for a new wooden walkway to improve access for bathers to Cala de la Herradura. A spokesman for the residents said that they are planning more demonstrations, which may include blocking roads, and that are even considering not paying local taxes until something is done to improve the area to their satisfaction.
New noise rules threatening livelihoods THE opposition party in Calpe have said that the new mid-summer noise abatement bylaws in the town are threatening the livelihood of hundreds of workers. The socialist PSOE have said that the new rules need more clarification as to what can and cannot be carried out and where. The rules effectively prohibit construction work between 1 and 31 August and were brought in after complaints from tourists and locals alike in recent years. However many small, mainly self -employed construction workers are afraid to even carry out minor jobs such as
installing air conditioning or minor renovations for fear of being fined, something larger businesses could probably absorb. The ordinance states that all works are banned “with the exception of small jobs that do not produce noise or discomfort to the neighbours”. However a separate clause says that any exemptions must be expressly approved by the mayor or a senior councillor. It is this apparent contradiction that the PSOE has asked to be clarified – although it may be too late for this summer.
Butts a lot TWO THOUSAND ashtrays have been distributed across the Orihuela Costa’s beaches this week in a bid reduce the number of cigarette butts left in the sand. The pocket-sized trays are reusable and are aimed at collecting butts and items like chewing gum that could take at least a decade to disintegrate, and are difficult to remove by beach cleaning services. Unpunished peddling BUSINESS owners say that nothing is being done to stop the illegal “Lookie Lookie” men peddling their wares in Cabo Roig, despite constant complaints to Orihuela council. The hawkers, selling mainly fake goods at low prices, reach numbers of up 80 operating during the evening on the 700 metres stretch of the Aquamarina promenade in Cabo Roig, and just a couple of metres in front of shops trying to ply a legal trade. The so-called “Lookie Lookie” men also restrict the width of the pavement to just a metre and a half, making it harder for pedestrians to use the walkway during the evening peak time. Businesses are claiming to be suffering major losses because of the illegal traders, whilst the sole evening police patrol vehicle on the Orihuela Costa has apparently made no impact in curbing the law breakers. A spokesman for the Federation of Associations of Orihuela Costa (FAOC) suggested that the problems would be greatly alleviated if
Octogenarian attacked and robbed POLICE in Valencia have arrested a 31-yearold man in connection with a vicious robbery in which an 87 year old woman was thrown to the ground and her jewellery wrenched from her. The victim was leaving a bakery in the city when the man ran up to her and committed the assault, fleeing with a
gold necklace and other items. The police were quickly on the scene and a man matching the attacker’s description was stopped in the city centre. He was in possession of a necklace similar to the one stolen and arrested. Further investigation also linked him to another mugging in the city a few days earlier.
Mayor’s setback
the police staged a major raid and seized the fake goods, because many of the hawkers would not return. Liam Antony Kiley said:“The Aquamarina area seems to be law-free for the illegal sellers who seem to do just what they want, because nobody from the police or Orihuela council is addressing the problem”.
Legitimate retailers say they are being penalised for doing everything legally and paying taxes, in addition to being asked by the Orihuela police for documentation checks, whilst the “Lookie Lookie” men get a clear and unhindered run. “It is intolerable to turn a blind eye to their activities”, said local business association
president, Raymond Kearney. The “Clean Up Cabo Roig” group, that voluntarily cleans local streets and community areas, say that the promenade is left in a mess every night, and that the hawkers are creating health problems by using roads as a toilet at the end of their selling sessions in the early hour of each morning.
WORK on a new sewage network for Rojales has had to be stopped because the council has discovered that it doesn’t own part of the land for the project, despite being warned about it earlier in the year. Rojales mayor, Antonio Perez, was forced to admit that the authority is now talking with the land owner for the facility to be expanded at Lo Pepin. One of the opposition parties on Rojales council, Pader, pointed out the issue several months ago, but their

concerns were brushed aside by the PSOEcontrolled authority. The Lo Pepin landowner is digging his heels in, saying that he’s owed money for the current sewage facilities on his farm, and is refusing any expansion until he gets adequate compensation. Antonio Perez said that negotiations are ongoing, but had no date to declare over the resumption of work, merely stating that he was “optimistic”.

Caped crusader greets Bull death sparks protest young cancer patients by Simon Russell
A campaign to get rid of a giant advert of a funeral parlour that could be viewed in the children’s cancer ward of a Valencian hospital has gone a step further. The wall that previously carried the insensitive promotion now has a mural of a young superhero, complete with cape, a bald head and carrying a drip. The new design is meant to represent the young heroes who have to undergo treatment at the La Fe Hospital in Valencia City and has been funded by the campaign to remove the previous advertisement; the mural was created by artists from Madrid Unlogic. The figure even has a crossed ribbon on the back of his cape, the universal symbol in the fight against cancer and underneath is the slogan “Sois Heroes” – you are heroes.
THE death of an animal set to take part in in last month’s bull running festival in Benitatchell was the main focus for an official protest in the town last Friday. About 60 people turned out at the event organised by PAMA, the Marina Alta animal association. The event included a specially composed poem by local poet Angel Padilla, accompanied
by Simon Russell
by a flamenco dancer, aiming to show the poetry of life and not death as endorsed by bull running. The mayor of the town, Josep Femenia, attended the event although as a neutral observer. He stressed his environmental credentials but said that events such as bull
running and whether they should be staged were largely in the hands of Valencia, Madrid and Europe, not at local level. The animal died of a heart attack that was probably brought on by the extreme heat in the truck it was being kept in. PAMA say they are planning a further protest on 1 September to coincide with Javea’s “Bous a la Mar”.
Illegal campers continue CARAVANS and camper vans continue to park on the Aguamarga beach front in Alicante despite the presence of signs expressly forbidding their presence. Local residents have made several official complaints but there seems little willingness to take any action from the governing PP. Ironically when they were
by Simon Russell
in opposition, their tourism spokesperson, Mari Carmen de Espana, made a complaint about the then PSOE led councils inaction over the matter. The PP is now in charge of the city and Ms de Espana, who is head of the Tourism Department, has been accused
of a similar lack of action. A 40 berth site was opened on San Juan beach recently for mobile homes, complete with various facilities. However many of those camped out illegally on Aguamarga say they prefer it there as it is quieter and a good fishing spot. The Local Police leave them alone completely, they added.

Victims remembered as enquiry continues by Simon Russell
LAST Monday was the 10th anniversary of one of Spain’s worst air disasters, the Spanair crash at Madrid airport which killed all 154 passengers and crew after an engine fire at takeoff. The civilian victims were mainly Spanish off to the Canary Islands for their summer holidays, including many families. As wreaths were laid to remember the dead, the cause of the tragedy and allegations of cover-ups continue. Spanair, then one of Spain’s major airlines, folded just a few weeks after the incident and the Association of Spanair Victims say they are still looking for answers. The most likely cause was a fault in the take-off warning system, something which has prompted industry changes. However the MD-82 craft had previously been involved in two crashes, one of which also killed all 154 people on board, prompting questions about their safety record. Officially the enquiry is still open and on-going, something the new government has promised will continue.
Misjudged photo opportunity A man in Elche couldn’t have picked a worse located photo booth to try and break into, the one directly outside the main police station. The booth is busy compared to most as many people applying for documents such as DNI’s at the station use it for their photo ID. This was what a witness was approaching it for when he heard a loud

banging in the booth. He returned to the police station to report the incident and the investigating officers found a man trying to force open the cash box with a chisel and hammer. They arrested the 50-year-old and he has been charged with attempted theft by force.
Anniversary attack fails Drug cocktail hospitalises toddler A young couple from Elda have been arrested after toxicology reports on their sick baby showed that it had ingested both cocaine and marijuana. The pair, who live in Elda, took the 15 month old to A&E in Alicante Hospital

after it had become ill. Once the cause was determined the infant was treated and responded well. The hospital reported the incident to authorities who arrested
the 17 and 21 year old parents this week, charging them with child neglect; drugs charges may follow. The baby has been well enough to leave hospital and is in the care of Valencian social services.
AN armed attack on a Catalan police station almost a year to the day of the Barcelona terror incidents is being treated as a terrorist incident by the authorities. On 19 August Algerian Abdel Taib entered the station carrying a knife and shouting “Allahu Akbar”. He was then shot and killed by a female officer based in the Cornella de Llobregat station. The man was said to live very close to the scene and the police are searching his property for information and will be looking to see if he has links
by Simon Russell
to terror groups or was a “lone wolf”. The quick actions of the officer were praised by a police spokesman; she had been on duty in the reception area and saw Taib had “clear homicidal intentions”; her actions may well have saved lives, said the spokesman. Last August Catalonia suffered 16 deaths in Barcelona as well as the holiday resort of Cambrils and several events have been taking place to commemorate the anniversary.
Not all peace and love at festival
THE Guardia Civil have released their statistics on incidents and arrest rates at the Valencian Communities most recent music festival, Arenal Sound in the Castellon province. 33 people were arrested at the four day event, 24 for theft including a woman who stole 18 mobile

phones, an increasing form of crime at music festivals where young people are carrying around devices often worth several hundred euros. There were five people arrested for selling drugs, including cocaine, speed,
hashish, marijuana and crystal meth; 317 people were found to be in possession of drugs for personal use, many coming to light among the over 2,000 drug tests carried out. The most serious single incident was an accusation of aggression and sexual assault which is under investigation.
Legionnaire’s disease hits prison THERE are conflicting reports about an outbreak of legionella at Picassent prison in the Valencian province. The UGT Union says that there have been two cases so far while the Ministry of the Interior claims there has just been an isolated incident. The virus, commonly known
by Simon Russell
as Legionnaires Disease, can spread very quickly and fatalities are not unusual. The union has requested a meeting with prison authorities to discuss the potential outbreak and what is being done to prevent it. The
one confirmed case was an inmate who is out of danger; the Ministry say that a reported second case was diagnosed and was not legionella. The prison is in a poor condition and the water pipes, which are often the carrier for the disease, are old and badly worn, say the union.

Who’s a pretty boy then? Andrew Atkinson
When it comes to exotic and beautiful birds we adore parakeets - with a coined phrase: ‘Who’s a pretty boy then’? becoming part of our ‘feathered’ language. But an underlying factor, that many are unaware of, is that the beloved parakeets seen in trees and flying in and around many towns and cities in Spain are causing havoc! Namely Monk parakeets here in Spain - including the Costa Blanca north and south areas are descending on fields of almonds, along with other crops, with farmers losing a percentage of their profit margin, due to damage. Parakeets are known to cause severe economic damage to fruit farms and vineyards, with problems around the Mediterranean. Crops have been decimated by parakeets - who also threaten local biodiversity - by ousting native birds from food sites. They are also known to exclude endemic birds and bats from tree nesting cavities. In Spain, strict legislation on the possession, transportation and commercial trafficking of invasive parakeets has been introduced, with the culling of flocks. There is a Monk parakeet plague in Spain, with tens of thousands across the country, according to Ornithologist group SEO/Birdlife. The Monk parakeet first arrived in Spain in 1975 - over four decades later they have become a huge environmental problem. Urban areas in the north and south of Spain - including the Vega Baja region - over 400 cities and towns have them present. Madrid, along with Barcelona, is plagued with nesting Monk parakeets running into their thousands, reportedly having the biggest growth rate, initially
started when people housed them as pets. Native to Argentina the Monk parakeet has adapted to the climate in Valencia and Murcia over a period spanning four decades. Many residents and holidaymakers deem the parakeets as beautiful - exotic - and enjoy being in a vicinity of a ‘paradise’ picturesque scene. Nesting in trees, or just flying overhead. The parakeets are the talk of the towns and cities across Spain. As in Spain, parakeets have become a potential threat to
Bucking the trend
T O U R I S M professionals in the Valencian Community are examining why the Castellon province of the Community has seen a sharp rise in visitors from the UK while the rest of the region has experienced a fall. Brexit is being blamed for much of the overall 2.9% drop in Brit visitors in the first half of the year, although the reemergence of markets such
by Simon Russell
as Turkey and Tunisia are also among the factors cited. However Castellon, traditionally the least known of the three provinces among the British, has seen a 7.5% increase in UK tourist numbers over the same period. Alicante and Valencia provinces will both be looking into
whether this signals a change in holidaymakers who may be looking for a more authentic “Spanish experience” than much of their province tends to offer, at least the larger resorts such as Benidorm and Torrevieja. Reduced demand means that Castellon is also generally cheaper, especially in peak season than the rest of the region while beaches tend to be quieter.
crops and native birds in Britain - according to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. The parakeets are labelled as an urgent economic, societal and environmental problem. Parakeets have settled in more than 100 cities in Europe, and are deemed out of control in Brussels, with concerns about their presence in Paris and Amsterdam. In Spain, the Monk parakeet (Myiopsitta monachus) is causing problems not just in Barcelona, Madrid, but also Seville, amongst other cities and towns.
They eat a variety of seeds, nuts, fruits, berries, vegetation, leaf buds and blossoms, along with insects and their larvae. The biggest concern in Spain is farmers’ crops. The Monk parakeet is a small, bright-green parrot with a greyish breast and greenishyellow abdomen, having a lifespan of 15-20 years. In some states, parakeets are illegal, cited as a threat to agriculture, or that they could potentially establish a naturalised flock and threaten native species, which has been the case in Spain. Parakeets, which can be loud and able to give a painful peck have been popular in the pet trade since the sixties. Today in Spain parakeets nest communally, with dozens living year-round in large, multi-family stick nests - built in trees and pylons - as seen in the north and southern Spain. Many pet Monk parakeets have either escaped from an aviary or house cages. In 2013 it was prohibited to keep the Monk parakeet by law. The Monk parakeet has adapted to urban areas that have been seen as a negative impact on Spain’s fauna and flora. Along with raiding and disturbing native birds’ and bats nesting habitats, concerns are the parakeets eating new tree sprouts. The Madrid Government approved the capture and killing of Monk parakeets five years ago, deemed as ‘almost a plague’. The Monk parakeet, along with the rose-ringed parakeet, is now controlled in a bid to reduce their population. One of the pastimes of owners’ of pet parakeets is to learn them to talk. They imitate most things they hear. With the teaching of ‘Who’s a pretty boy then?’ rife.
Prison fire culprit detained A man has been arrested in connection with a fire by the Fontcalent prison on 13 August. The blaze spread to housing used by prison personnel who live on site and many had to be evacuated. Several units of firefighters and police had to attend the fire, and a large area of forestry was also destroyed before it was brought under control.
Later inspection showed that the fire had almost certainly started where someone was burning the plastic covering off cables, presumably to obtain the copper inside them. Tip-
offs from the public led them to the arrest this week of a 44-year-old Spanish man who has a lengthy police record; he has been charged with the reckless starting of a fire.

PET SHOP BAN Pet shops and dealers in England will be banned from selling puppies and kittens under government plans. The proposals, which have gone out to consultation, will mean those wanting to buy or adopt a pet less than six months old will have to go to the breeder or a rescue centre. A ban on licensed sellers dealing in dogs and cats less than eight weeks old is already coming in on 1 October. Campaigners welcomed the announcement, but warned of “potential loopholes”
The ban aims to reduce the health problems associated which emerge when animals are reared in poor conditions. Speaking in support of a change, Environment Secretary Michael Gove said: “People who have a complete disregard for pet welfare will no longer be able to profit from this miserable trade.” There are no records of the number of puppies sold via third parties, but the animal charity Blue Cross has estimated it is between 40,000 and 80,000 per year in Great Britain.

Britain will hold continuous negotiations with the EU from now on in a bid to achieve a breakthrough in Brexit talks. Following a meeting with Brexit Secretary Dominic Raab in Brussels on Tuesday, the EU’s chief negotiator Michel Barnier revealed discussions “are now entering the final stage”. “We have agreed the EU and the UK will negotiate continuously from now on and Dominic and I will meet regularly to
take stock and move the negotiations forward,” he said. Mr Barnier paved the way for negotiations to yet extend beyond the next formal European Council summit on 18 October, which had previously been viewed as a deadline for striking a deal. He said a UK divorce agreement and political declaration on the future UK-EU partnership was needed “well before the end of the year” in order for it to be ratified on both
sides. Mr Barnier repeated the EU would not bend its principles in order to satisfy British demands. Speaking at a news conference alongside the European Commission official, Mr Raab admitted there are still “gaps” between the two sides, but that he and Mr Barnier had held “an honest conversation about those”. He also expressed hope a Brexit deal can be reached within the next two months.

Drop Quotes Drop Quotes are similar to cryptograms, in that the goal is for the solver to uncover a hidden quote. A black-and-white crossword-style grid is set up for each quote, with a number of letters “hovering” above each column. Your task is to “drop” each of those letters into the appropriate square in each column, until the entire quote is revealed. All punctuation (commas, periods, dashes, etc.) has been removed. Good luck!

The Great British Bake Off
NEW SERIES: A specialist protection officer is assigned to guard an ambitious home secretary who may be the target of a terror plot following her support of a controversial new surveillance bill. The bodyguard’s experiences in the army have left him harbouring deep-seated resentments which may make him a threat to the politician he is supposed to protect. twins to race Tyson Fury confirms Deontay Wilder Yates at Vuelta a Espana bout after second comeback win
The lineal heavyweight champion of the world, Tyson Fury, set up a November date with undefeated WBC champion Deontay Wilder after Fury turned in a measured performance to outpoint Francesco Pianeta in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Fury and Wilder announced in the ring in Windsor Park on Saturday night that the much-anticipated clash between the lineal world champion, Fury, and his undefeated WBC champion rival would take place later this year – likely November – but, as promoter Frank Warren was keen to impart, a specific date and venue hasn’t been selected as of yet. Fury won every round on the judges’ scorecards in Belfast, though some sections of the crowd appeared frustrated at his measured performance, clearly feeling that he could have finished the fight if he had upped his intensity. For Fury though, the prize was too lucrative to take any chances. The bout will be the biggest heavyweight attraction since Anthony Joshua defeated Wladimir Klitschko in May of last year and the winner will be in prime position for the heavyweight world title unification bout with Joshua in 2019, in what would be the
most lucrative fight in boxing. At the conclusion of Saturday’s fight, Wilder climbed into the ring to tell the audience that the fight was “officially on.” Fury retorted with “I’m knocking you the f*** out, boy.” “It is one thing that Tyson Fury has never had,” Wilder later elaborated about the world title he holds. “He had many belts, but he’s never had the WBC belt. And if he ever thinks about having this belt, he better wake
up and apologise to me because he’ll never have this. “I can’t wait to fight you because I am going to knock you out, I promise you. You’ve never been knocked out but you’re going to feel the experience, what it feels to get hit by the Bronze Bomber.” As for Tyson Fury, his comeback was a simple one: “Listen, you can’t knock out what you can’t hit. This man [Pianeta] couldn’t land a blow on me tonight.”
Adam Yates will race alongside twin brother Simon at the Vuelta a Espana, Australian team Mitchelton-Scott have announced. Simon had long planned to take part in the final Grand Tour of the season following his starring role at the Giro d’Italia in May, but a change to Adam’s race programme will see him head to Spain as well after he fell short of his targets at the Tour de France. The team plan is for Adam to ride in support of Simon, who will be the designated leader at the race which starts in Malaga on August 25. It is rare for the 26-year-old twins to compete in the same race, though they both started their seasons at the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana. “The Vuelta a Espana wasn’t originally on my programme but together with the management we came to the decision that doing the Vuelta after the Tour would be another
good chance to get some experience in riding multiple Grand Tours in one year,” Adam said. “It’s pretty difficult to replicate the fatigue of a Grand Tour in training so the opportunity of riding the Vuelta without the stress of riding GC will be a good step towards gaining more experience not just in racing over three weeks but also in following all the routines and day-today stuff that goes on in a Grand Tour.” Adam finished fourth on the 2016 Tour, winning the young riders’ classification, but cracked during the Alpine stages in this year’s race – something he put down to dehydration – and ultimately finished over an hour behind winner Geraint Thomas in 29th place. Simon spent 13 days in the leader’s pink jersey at the Giro in May, but faded badly on Stage 19 as Chris Froome launched an audacious attack which propelled him to overall victory.

D a n n y Cipriani has avoided further sanctions from the Rugby Football Union (RFU) after he pleaded guilty to common assault and resisting arrest last week. But the RFU’s
charge of “conduct prejudicial to the interests of the game” was upheld by an independent disciplinary panel on We d n e s d a y night, although they decided the Gloucester fly-half has already been ad-
equately punished. Cipriani - who made his first England start since 2008 in the third Test against South Africa this summer - was fined £2,000 last week by Jersey Magistrates’ Court following an incident that took place on Gloucester’s pre-season tour. The Gallagher Premiership club also fined Cipriani £2,000 and ordered him to undertake an “additional 10 hours of community service”,
an Neal came in first (yet again!) with 42 points, but unfortunately for him, John (Archimedes I’m not) Collins marked his card incorrectly and he was subsequently disqualified! This is a hard school! Three players, Tom Hardie, Lindsay Forbes and Geoff Biggerstaffshared the top of the leader board with 37 points, but our President, Dave Pulling, took this week’s honours with 38.
Just two 2’s this week both of which aptly went to Bryan Neal. Onto Friday and we played a ‘Bowmaker’, which simply means taking the best three scores out of four on each hole. Our winning team (despite not filling in their card correctly!) were Ken and Liz Robertson, John Shervell and the calmest man on the course, Andy McDonald, with a team score of 113 points.

Las Ramblas Golf Society Our first team game of the week resulted in a very close finish at the top. Playing the two best scores out of four but with all to count on the par 3’s, the winning team, with 96 points, were Pete Dunn, Rod Doel, John Shervell and yours truly. The runners up scored 95 points and third place carded 94! Andy McDonald was reported to havesaid ‘this ball retriever is not long enough to get my putter out of the tree’! Still you’re not alone Andy as it’s reported that, on average, six clubs are broken or thrown into bushes or water hazards every day of aseniors competition. Wednesday’s stableford competition saw its fair share of controversy. Bry-

WARRINGTON prop Sita Akauola will miss tomorrow’s Rugby League Challenge Cup final against Catalans Dragons at Wembley(4.00 pm kick-off, live on BBC 1) after being banned for one
The second week of this Season´s Alfaz Fantasy Football League produced plenty of points for our Managers with the average score reaching almost 29 points. The 9 Premier League games produced for the Fantasy 33 goals, 3 clean sheets( 2 of them in the game between Cardiff& Newcastle) 29 yellow cards and 2 red ones. This weeks naughty boys was Newcastle´s Issak Hayden and Leicester City´s very popular striker Jamie Vardy. Referee Craig Pawson was once again seeking the limelight by sending off Hayden and then awarding Newcastle a penalty in injury time. Fortunately for the Bluebirds Etheridge saved Kenedy´s penalty. There was a lot of action at the top of the A.F.F.L. with Jeanette´s team Jin´s Dream Team jumping up 11 places to reach the Summit thanks mainly to her 2 Manchester City Players Benjamin Mendy & Sergio Aguero who scored 29 points of her 59 points. They have a 3 point advantage over Eric´s team Peaky Blinders then comes Pauline´s Vodka Army who are nicely tucked in behind the Leaders.Last weeks early pacemakers Nikki´s Liverpool 94 & Winnie´s Le Hombre Rioja had to do a backward step this week with Liverpool being involved in the Monday Night game with Crystal Palace. We have 2 new teams joint bottom of the League
game. The 26-year-old Tonga international was charged with dangerous conduct in the 28-18 defeat by Castleford in the Super 8s on Friday.
Shawn´s Punky Roosters & Kevin´s Sky Blue Heaven. No he is not a Man City Fan he just happens to support Coventry City! Jin´s Dream Team are also top of our Mark Carter Ladies Section with a 4 point gap between them and Pauline´s Vodka Army. Sue´s Blue Devils and Sharon´s Rovers & Out are in 3rd & 4th place waiting for the leaders to slip up. No change at the bottom with Kim´s Ginger United still trailing Laura´s Legends by 3 points. William & Henry have held on to the top spot of our Junior League despite coming under pressure from young Robbie´s team Baines on Toast ( great name) . A.J.´s team Blue Moon F.C. are on the coat-tails of the front runners in 3rd place. Roo & Woos Wombles have got off to a bad start and they are still 10 points behind Brad & Ant down at the foot of the table. Our Golden Boot League which is being sponsored by Accross the Costas is shaping up to be very competitive. At the moment only 1 point seperates the top5 teams. Sue´s Blue Devils & Robbie´s Baines on Toast stand shoulder to shoulder at the top with a slender 1 point advantage over Tarazara, Pauline´s Vodka Army and Ian´s Tasty Toffees. The only team yet to score in this League is Steph´s Tremlow Terriers who are firmly planted in the bottom spot 5 points
behind Kemp United,Penfold Penguins and Dunkrat. We have 3 teams going into our monthly wine draw and they are top scoring team which was Jin´s Dream Team who bagged 59 points and 2 teams who both managed a minus 1 score Tommy´s Quantrill´s Raiders & Dave´s team The Liverpool Way. Both Managers are Liverpool Fans so I´m sure they both know it´s going to be their Year! Manager of the Month for August has been kindly sponsored by Linda at the Bar Tapas Restaurant which is situated right on the front in Albir. They have a super International Menu as well as serving up some very tasty Tapas. With just one week to go the positions at the top are the same as the Main League, Terry´s team Could it Be are 5 points behind the leaders and 3 points above Sue´s Blue Devils. Both teams are still well in contention for this lovely Meal for 2 at the Bar Tapas. Fastest Moving team this week is Ray´s Pool Sharks who moved up a massive 142 places to number 67 in the Main League which qualifies then for a good Olde English Breakfast for 2 at the Bar Code in Alfaz. Well all our Mini-League are up and running on our excellent website which is www.alfazffl. com so don´t forget to log on and find out how your team is perfoming as the Season unfolds.
Akauola has served two onegame suspensions this season for similar offences. Warrington, beaten finalists in 2016, last won the Challenge Cup in 2012.

Nip-and-tuck in Spa
AFTER a four-week break, the 2018 Formula One season roars back to action this weekend at the Spa circuit in Belgium. Both the Drivers’ and the Constructors’ Championships are close, with Mercedes sitting 10 points ahead of Ferrari, and Lewis Hamilton leading the driver’s race with a 24-point lead over Sebastian Vettel. “Both the Drivers’ and the Constructors’ Championship are
by Alex Trelinski
extremely tight and I expect it to be a close battle all the way through to Abu Dhabi,” said Mercedes boss Toto Wolff. It’s been a nip-andtuck battle between Mercedes and Ferrari, and Wolff admits the world champions will return to the track “recharged” and “energised” after a huge swing in momentum before the summer break. Hamilton’s back-to-back
victories in Germany and Hungary, where Ferrari appeared to have the quicker car, gave Mercedes the advantage going into the break, and there’s history that goes against Ferrari. Ferrari haven’t won at Spa in almost a decade, but they pushed Mercedes close last year and their engine boost, thought to be worth almost half a second on the straights, should mean they are strong on a powerhungry track this weekend.
SPAIN’S Marc Marquez goes into this Sunday’s British MotoGP at Silverstone, riding high at the top of the standings by a big 59 points, and is the clear favourite to win a fifth MotoGP title this season. But victory at this weekend’s Silverstone round is another matter. Marquez won from pole after a close battle with Jorge Lorenzo at Silverstone in 2014 but hasn’t finished on the Silverstone podium since, falling in the wet 2015 race, finishing fourth in 2016 and then suffering an engine failure last year. The Repsol Honda rider has lost out to Ducati riders Andrea Dovizioso(last year’s Silverstone winner) and then Lorenzo at the last two rounds.
“Silverstone is a fast, technical track but our bike has very strong points, and we’ll try our best there as u s u a l ,” said
Marquez. “The track has been resurfaced, and that should be a good help in general for the performances; we’ll see if that’s the case.” Yamaha’s Valentino Rossi remains Marquez’s closest opponent in the world championship, despite being beaten by the Spaniard in the last five rounds. Lorenzo and Dovizioso are 71 and 72 points adrift of Marquez, respectively.

Sport NEW YORK hosts the final tennis Grand Slam of the year from Monday and Rafa Nadal, who is currently world No 1, will be the top men’s seed for the US Open at Flushing Meadows.
The current women’s world No 1, Simona Halep gets the same top honour in the ladies singles seedings. Nadal is the defending men’s champion and will be looking to keep hold of the 2000 ATP points on offer. The man from Mallorca, who lifted the Rogers Cup in Toronto earlier this month, is aiming to clinch the US Open for the fourth time and to get his hands on his second major of the season, on the back of winning the French Open.. Second seed, Roger Federer, meanwhile, who has 20 Grand Slam titles to his name, is aiming to

triumph in New York for the first time since 2008. Novak Djokovic’s resurgence this year which included landing the Cincinnati Masters last weekend, sees him seeded sixth. Britain’s Kyle Edmund has been seeded 16, while Andy Murray will
finally make his return to Grand Slam tennis after withdrawing from Wimbledon, but questions remain about the Scot’s ability to return to his best level after his injury nightmare. The former US Open title winner will be unseeded and finds himself with a world ranking of 378.
In the women’s singles world number Simona Halep has unsurprisingly been made top seed, and will look to add to her French Open win back in the spring. Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark is seeded second followed by Sloane Stephens and Angelique Kerber, with no British women seeded.
American anger LA LIGA footballers have not ruled out strike action over a plan to stage a top-flight league match in the United States, says the players’ union. Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos and Barcelona vice-captain Sergio Busquets were among the high-profile players to attend
a meeting on Wednesday to discuss their “concern” over the issue. La Liga agreed a 15-year deal with US media company Relevent last week, with the players’ union - the AFE saying its members were not consulted by La Liga. Players from all of the La Liga Primera division
sides met in Madrid on Wednesday to discuss the issue with AFE president David Aganzo(picturedcentre at a news conference afterwards). Among those in attendance were Ramos and Real Madrid team-mate Nacho and the Barcelona duo Busquets and Sergi
Roberto.. Aganzo said: “The problem is the lack of common sense, a schedule where only the export of soccer benefits - nobody counts on the fans.” “We need to fix it with the bosses. The captains are outraged, they’re against it, they are unanimous.”
