Guardia Civil drug squad officers have broken up a major British drug trafficking operation being run from a Benidorm campsite. During the raid last week, they arrested three British men (aged 39, 42, and 64), a 29-year-old British woman and a 36-year-old Lithuanian man. The Officers intercepted a 64kg cargo of hashish, hidden inside heavy machinery en-route to Madrid airport and destined for distribution to the British market, A fifth Brit, aged 36 ,was held at a jail in Madrid where he was awaiting extradition following his detention on a European Arrest Warrant for a serious assault. The co-ordinated police operation involved officers from the Guardia Civil organised crime unit and members of the customs surveillance service following a tip off suggesting a gang was dealing drugs to other residents on an unnamed campsite on

the outskirts of Benidorm, where up to 2500 people reside in peak summer months. The officers seized 78 grams of cocaine, 194 grams of hashish, 4 kilos of marijuana, 10 syringes of marijuana oil, 297 plants from an indoor plantation, 10,470 in pounds sterling, 14,775 in euros and 6 highend vehicles, during the raid. Police believe the gang used seven pitches on the site to cultivate, store and distribute drugs to other members of the British community in Benidorm, Alfas del Pi, La Nucia and as far as Javea. Investigators also suspect the organisation had been so successful and grown so large, it had set up a drugs route between Spain and the UK as well as selling to British holidaymakers in the resort. Benidorm campsite drug raid by Andy Mansell
FROM FRONT PAGE A spokesman for the Guardia Civil in Alicante said in a statement to the Spanish press, “The Guardia Civil and Tax Agency have smashed a criminal organisation in Benidorm involved in drugs trafficking at a campsite. “Six people including five Britons have been arrested on suspicion of drugs offences and membership of a criminal gang. “The members of this largely British-led organisation thought this campsite, where 2,500 people stay in highseason, was the ideal place to base their nerve centre of operations among compatriots. “One of the alleged ringleaders of the group resided there permanently and controlled seven plots with caravans used to store and sell the drugs.
“Investigators concluded the drug trafficking gang had reached international dimensions and had established a route between the UK and Spain.’ The statement which continued by describing the gang members as violent and dangerous said, “To arrest the last of the six detainees, a British man aged 36, the Civil Guard had to go to a prison in Madrid where he was being held prior to his extradition to the UK as the alleged author of a serious assault.” The five suspects arrested during the raid were charged with being the alleged perpetrators of a crime against public health belonging to a criminal. They have been remanded in custody after appearing before an investigating magistrate as part of an ongoing operation.

THE Valencian Consell met on 4 September to discuss short term plans regarding aid for municipalities affected by the huge fire in Llutxent last month.
They agreed that all seven municipalities had 45 days to submit any claim, including a report estimating the cost of the damage within their town´s boundaries. This will then be reviewed
by a technical team and payments considered. Vice President Monica Oltra refused to give a figure of the likely final cost, only saying that the process would be “as fast and fair as possible”.

Black widow wheelchair mystery
Off- duty police officer witnessed the woman walk “as well as you and me” The off-duty police officer who was first on the scene at what the Spanish press have dubbed the “black widow murder” has given her version of events. The case has had a high profile since a 69-year-old man was stabbed by his bride of just two weeks and her carer in an Alicante car park earlier this month. National Policeman Encarnacion Rico was first on the scene and tried to stop the attack. The female detainee has a wheelchair and claims to be quadriplegic. The Weekender printed the picture of her being carried into court by police as she said she was unable to walk. However, Ms

Rico said that when she reached the scene of the murder the newlywed was “walking as well as you and me” adding further twists to the tale. The officer also said that she couldn’t be helped but be impressed by the litany of excuses she produced when clearly caught in the act. She said that some black people had committed the act, the man was drunk and fell and that they had just been helping him among other things. This despite her just witnessing the 45-year-old and her carer attacking the victim with a screwdriver.
Bogus electricians arrested FOUR men have been arrested in Alicante in connection with a scam where they posed as electricians to enter a property and steal valuables. The four are thought to be part of a nationwide scam where people are cold called to set up appointments for a check of their electrical supply. They would then go to the property, dressed in clothes similar to an Iberdrola employee uniform for example. While one talked to the owner of the property about the visit and pretended to inspect the house, another gang member would sneak off and look for valuables

to steal. As is sadly often the case their preferred victims were elderly, especially those living on their own or the more vulnerable physically or mentally. The four detainees, aged between 40 and 53 and Alicante residents, have been arrested in connection with ten thefts in Castellon, Valladolid and two towns in the Albacete province. A large taskforce is investigating the matter nationally, including agents from the National Police, Guardia Civil and the UDEV Specialised Crime Unit.

Several deaths as bus sliced in half
FIVE people have been confirmed as dead and two more are in a very serious condition after a bus ploughed into the pillar of a bridge outside Aviles in the Asturias region. The incident took pace at lunchtime last Monday and dozens of emergency service crews and vehicles attended the horrific scene. Once the site is secure the investigation
into the cause of the crash will begin. Witnesses said that the vehicle mowed down construction barriers before smashing into the pillar. Police will be keen to talk to the driver but it is believed he is one of the seriously injured and has had a limb amputated. There were 21 people on the bus and none of them escaped injury, say the local authorities.
Drunken mum threatens child with bottle A woman has been arrested in Gandia after brandishing a broken beer bottle at her nine-year-old child’s neck, threatening to cut it if he didn’t stop making a noise. The incident happened at a bar on Calle Alcoy on Tuesday evening where the woman was described as extremely drunk.
Another customer contacted the authorities and the local police came and arrested the mother, detaining her after she had originally fled the scene. The police interviewed witnesses and charged her with threatening family members. Locals say that she lives in Gandia but is originally from Madrid.
Tourist dies on Javea beach
A foreign tourist collapsed on the beach in Javea on Thursday afternoon. The local Red Cross responded quickly, administering CPR in an
attempt to resuscitate the man. Their efforts were unsuccessful as were those of the paramedics who arrived soon after. The Guardia Civil
secured the location whilst they awaited the arrival of a Judge before the removal of the body. The tourist is suspected to have suffered from a heart attack.

Shock as child shot in park POLICE in Madrid have opened an investigation after an eight year old girl was shot in the leg while playing in a park in the city. The incident happened in the Alcala de Henares area at lunchtime last Friday. The girl was playing with her brother while her parents looked on then started to cry due to a pain in her leg. The leg was bleeding and it was later determined that it had been caused by a 4.5 mm calibre bullet, probably fired from distance. Police began a sweep of the park and interviewing passers-by while signs have been put up warning people to be vigilant. Local sources say that the shooter may be a man who lives in a nearby block of flats and has been said to hate the presence of children in the park.
KNEE TREMBLER THE TORREVIEJA area was hit by a minor earthquake in the early hours of Monday morning. The 2.1 magnitude tremor was registered as having an epicentre some 10 kilometres under the La Mata lakes, and occurred at 3.38 am.

A costly lesson AN IRISH woman has been left stranded in the Torrevieja area after not taking out any travel insurance, and suffering a stroke whilst on holiday. A GoFundMe page has raised well over 10 thousand euros to fly her home, as she needs a medical team to accompany her on a nonscheduled flight. 62-year-old Annette Tyrrell from Dublin had a stroke in mid-August, and at first, she was well enough to walk into Torrevieja Hospital. However, her condition subsequently deteriorated leaving her paralysed down the right-hand side of her body and without speech. Annette travelled without insurance as, and given that she has diabetes, the insurance quotes she was given were “ridiculous” according to her daughter-in-law Louise. “In hindsight, yes, we should have gotten holiday insurance”, said Louise. The Weekender, as an example, got two insurance quotes from Irish companies in the region of 40 euros for a fortnight break for a type-one

Her family took out an emergency loan and flew to Torrevieja to be at Annette’s side. “Doctors told us she has a blockage that they can’t unblock, and that surgery is too dangerous,” Louise told TheJournal.ie. “But she had her EHIC card, so she should have gotten the same medical care as in Ireland,” she added. Unfortunately, Louise’s view is a misconception of the EHIC card, which only offers free medical coverage that a particular state offers to citizens of that country. The card also doesn’t cover instances such as air ambulances or medical repatriation. At the start of last week, Annette was discharged from hospital via ambulance to a Torrevieja
apartment, after doctors told her family that her medical needs had been met as far as they could be, just as it would be in the case of a Spanish national, and that it was now a case of rehabilitation. “We just want to get her home now,” said Louise.
Beating the bottle
ALICANTE Cities war against youngsters “botellon” outside drinks parties has resulted in 259 people being charged with offences last weekend alone. The centre for the noisy gatherings has traditionally been the Central Market area and the police were out in force there from Friday morning after being accused of turning a blind eye before.
Weekend road death
Infractions were mainly for public drinking in prohibited areas and underage consumption of alcohol. However there were also charges relating to drugs and littering. The promised clampdown came after local traders had pledged to take the town hall to court if they did not effectively implement their own by-laws regarding public drinking.
POLICE are unable to explain the reasons a motorcycle left the road in the town of Vilareal, killing the driver. Witnesses to the accident, which happened at about 8am last Sunday, said the vehicle suddenly veered off the road and ploughed into the trailer of a parked truck. The 45 year old driver was confirmed dead at the scene; no-one else was involved in the incident said local police.

Marina Baixa Hospital falling apart at the seams
A collapsed false ceiling, which led to the closure of four operating theatres last Wednesday, is just the latest in a string of maintenance issues that have beset one of the region’s major hospitals during recent Summer months. Fortunately, no one was hurt in the incident, which occurred during the quiet afternoon period when no surgeries take place, but the affected theatres could remain closed for up to two months, whilst the problem is fixed. Hospital bosses, who were forced to cancel or reschedule patient’s operations, were already reeling from a series of air conditioning breakdowns during mid-August, forcing them to hire mobile air conditioning units, which struggled to cope in temperatures of 35 degrees and more. This latest ceiling collapse, is the third in

the last eighteen months, following similar incidents in a corridor and laboratory at the Hospital situated on the outskirts of Villajoyosa. Further disruptions to patients also occurred from flooding caused by burst and leaking pipework. Although the hospital has an excellent record for patient care, the infrastructure has received little investment, from a succession of regional governments from all sides of the political spectrum, since it opened thirty-two years ago. When it was inaugurated in 1986, the building served a population of around 100,000 inhabitants, but that figure has swelled to more than double, not taking into account non registered patients and tourists, who add to the numbers and is still the only major medical
establishment in the region without an MRI scanner. The original car park is unable to cope with the number of visitors using the facility leaving car owners little choice but to leave their vehicles parked along
the sides of the access road. More than 12 million euros has been set aside over the last decade on plans to either relocate the Hospital to a new location, or expand the existing facility, but as yet no decision has been
made. For now, patients are recommended to bring along with them, an umbrella in case the roof falls in, a room fan to keep them cool and a sense of humour to cope with the disruption.
Hotel bug hits a hundred AT least a hundred people are believed to have been struck down with gastroenteritis at a Valencian hotel, two of them badly enough to be hospitalised. All were guests at the Hotel Orange in Benicassim, a four star establishment with 400 rooms and popular with tourists. The Ministry of Health has started an investigation and is trying to determine the source of the outbreak. The hotel has said that their food is not to blame and this is “probably a viral outbreak such as Norovirus that is transmitted by person to person contact”. A doctor has been at the hospital full time and staff have been given briefings on how to deal with the outbreak and avoid it spreading further.

Immigrant returns defended
Hero hound THERE was a heartwarming end to the disappearance of an elderly man with Alzheimer´s disease in the Valencian town of Burriana this week. After going missing from his home overnight. prompting a police search. he was located in a remote spot, accompanied by a stray dog. Apparently the dog had stayed with the 75-year-old all night, helping him keep warm and providing company. The man´s grateful family are now looking into adopting the creature as

Drunk driver in spectacular crash
A young man was lucky to escape with his life after his car was driven off a bridge in Valencia, ending up on it´s roof. The accident happened last weekend in the early hours of Sunday morning when the car flew off the bridge, ending up partially blocking off traffic to the tunnel entrance on the road below. THE renovation work on the building on Calle Caballeros in Denia which is set to become the new history museum has started. The children´s park on Plaza del Archiduque has been removed to allow access for machinery but will be replaced after the works have been completed. The historic old building was originally the house of the Marquesa Valero of Palma and has been judged as ideal to house the headquarters of the cities history museum. A meeting was scheduled for this week with local businesses to discuss any upcoming disruption and the timetable of the project.

PLANS for a heliport on the outskirts of Alicante City have been rejected by the Valencian government. The proposed installation was predominantly to deal with emergencies on the island of Tabarca and a new site will now need to be found. The original plan had been to place the port where there is currently a disused sports field, but this has been rejected by the Culture Ministry as it is too close to busy residential areas. Alternatives now on the table include land close to the old prison and a site next to the lighthouse.
Search for missing man comes to Marina Alta

All in good time SPAIN could be switching time zones, some 78 years after dictator General Franco changed the clocks to be on a par with Nazi Germany. On the back of a European Commission proposal to scrap the twiceyearly changing of the clocks by an hour, Spain’s Foreign Affairs minister, Josep Borrell, hasn’t ruled out making a change which would be more in line with the country’s geographical location. “Perhaps Spain should be in another time zone,” the minister told reporters after a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Vienna. “Frankly, I don’t know. Let’s give the European Parliament an opportunity to see if it is able to find a common thread between countries that are in different geographical situations.” The EU proposal comes on the back of a huge Europe-wide poll conducted by the body which suggests massive support to stop the twice-yearly clock switch. The incident happened near the Valencian town of Bocareint when Local Police radioed a Guardia patrol to say a vehicle was driving recklessly and ignoring stop signs, putting the lives of cyclists, pedestrians and other drivers in danger. Kringe has decided to put aside her work with the party, fighting for issues affecting work and families in the city.” The PP thanked Ms Kringe for her contribution to the party which she has been a member
of most of her adult life. When she was elected mayor she received more votes than any candidate before or since. Her place on the PP councillor list will be taken by Javier Igarza, currently head of Civil Protection.

Child adoption row escalates
Indian government ministers have accused Spain of abandoning one of its citizens after a girl adopted by a Spanish family was handed back and is now in a state of limbo. The child was adopted in January this year by a couple in Aragon who were told she was seven. She was tall for her age and when she began having periods her new parents had a test done on her bones to establish her age. The test concluded she was probably closer to 13 years old and at this stage, the parents returned the child on the basis that they had been lied to and had never

wanted to adopt a teenager. The minor is now in the care of Spanish Social Services and her future remains uncertain. Maneka Gandhi, India´s Minister for Woman and Children, said in a tweet “Its is very unfortunate that an adopted girl has been abandoned in Spain. I have asked our ambassador to return her to India immediately”. However the child is now a Spanish national and her future may well lie in Spain, either by being readopted or fostered. The Spanish authorities have stressed that the welfare of the girl is their priority.
Climb every mountain A Denia man has conquered the Mont Blanc Ultra Trail, a gruelling endurance run across the French and Swiss Alps. The route is 171 kilometres long with peaks of up to 10,000 metres to ascend. Successful participants have two days to run the course, something Denia
resident Tony Herrera managed in 35 hours and 44 minutes. Weather conditions were described as poor, with rain and cold on both nights of the event. The overall winner was Frenchman Xavier Thevenard, his third success in the uniquely demanding race.
Foreign fraudster hid out locally A man wanted by Hungarian
authorities in connection with over a hundred cases of fraud has been arrested in Calpe this week. The internet-based scam involved offering services relating to tourism on the River Danube to travel firms. These services turned out to be nonexistent and 102 companies were taken in by frauds totalling an estimated 1.3 million euros. A European arrest warrant was issued by Hungarian police in April and they had reason to believe the man was living in the Alicante area. Police in the region started a search which led to the 48-year-old being tracked down and arrested last Friday.
Roadworks restart
THE Town Hall has asked Denia residents to be aware that the roadworks affecting Calle Fontanella will restart on Monday, 10 September. The refurbishment and redevelopment project had been on hold after problems with the drainage system but these have now been resolved. Calle Fontanella is near the end of Marques de Campo and behind Explanada de Cervantes. The works are scheduled to take six and a half months.

Public praised for help as thieves detained
Identification by witnesses was key to the arrest of two people, a man and woman, who burgled a house in a well-off part of Elche police said. It is believed the pair used the “bumping” method to gain entry, forcing a master key into the lock. A neighbour alerted a police patrol after spotting the thieves acting suspiciously at the property. They were fleeing as the police arrived but neighbours were able to give detailed descriptions of physical characteristics, clothing and the vehicle they escaped in. Another civilian spotted the vehicle stopped at traffic at which point the suspects

fled on foot in opposite directions as they were approached. They were both later caught and detained. Their vehicle had numerous house-breaking tools
consistent with those used at the burglary scene. There were also several items of jewellery and other valuables, not all from this robbery leading the authorities to believe they can be linked to other crimes in the area.
Price of religious solace THE Valencian health service has revealed that it spends 856,000 euros per annum on religious assistance. The main part of this is for the 62 Catholic chaplains who work at the Community´s hospitals with an average salary of 15,572€, either full or part time. The payment has been in place since 1985 after an agreement between the state and the
Episcopal conference. The other main expense is materials and facilities, usually a chapel and an office, with the office generally being made available to other religions. Some centres, such as the new hospital at Gandia, have a multi religious space which is for meetings and private contemplation but not worship.

THE Valencian Communities camping sector enjoyed almost 100% occupation during weekends in July, falling away slightly in August to around 90%. Vice President of the Valencian Federation of Campsites, Pepe Frasquet, said that September is shaping up to be a very good month based on early projections. The main reason for the drop in campers during August was the week of rain, something that meant a number of campers would have stayed home or made alternate arrangements. Camping is an important part of the Valencian tourist model, especially in the areas north of Javea where many of the sites are located. Mr Frasquet has recently returned from a conference in Germany and he thinks that the way forward for the sector is “glamping” glamorous camping – where people stay in bungalows or high end tents, often with the same facilities as standard self catering accommodation. As many campsites are right on the beach front glampers have the benefits of a five star location at a two star price, he said. Many sites now offer facilities such as supermarkets, swimming pools, cash machines, restaurants and even spas and beauty salons as the sector moves upmarket.

THE NUMBER of tourists visiting Spain in July fell for the first time in nine years, according to official figures released this week. The government statistics back up July’s fall in international passenger numbers at Alicante-Elche airport, in a further sign that numbers are stalling after five years of record growth as rival destinations in North Africa and Turkey tempt tourists with cheap, all-inclusive deals. Visitor numbers fell by 4.9 per cent in July compared to the same month in 2017, the first fall for that key summer month
since 2009. Tourism accounts for around 11 per cent of Spain’s economic output and the number of foreign visitors rose to 82 million last year, making Spain the world’s second most visited country after France. Hotel chains across Alicante Province have been forced to slash prices in a bid to win back trade, as other destinations have offered all-inclusive packages at prices that are up to 70 per cent cheaper. The lower Spanish tourist numbers indicate that attempts to tempt more up-market tourists have back-fired, as those seeking a cheap sun and sand package have gone elsewhere.
Do tenants have all the rights? THE problems of a family in Denia have highlighted for many the difficulty of dealing with difficult tenants in Spain. Rosana Ferrer and her three siblings inherited the property in the Ronda Sur area of town last year. They intended to occupy the property as one of the siblings, a brother, is autistic and totally dependent. They asked the sitting tenant to move out after giving notice but they ignored all requests, refusing to even answer the door.

No rent has been paid since Rosana and her family inherited the house 17 months ago and she believes this has been going on much longer, although records are sparse. When they have spoken to the tenant he has been rude or indifferent and made it clear he has no intention of moving out. A lawyer is now dealing with the case, an expensive process with no rent forthcoming. Rosana said the siblings
recently took the drastic step of painting graffiti on the front of the house saying “This is our house” and “Here no-one has paid since April 2017”. Rosana said all they want to do is get their house back and thousands of landlords in Spain are suffering the same problem. They have paid expenses including lawyers and notary fees, inheritance tax and many others while their need is greater than the person who is living in their property for free.
Pet beach shipshape again AFTER complaints that Denia´s dog beach had been neglected in the recent cleanup operation the issue has now been addressed. All of Denia´s beaches needed attention after the August storms but Punta del Raset, allocated for dogs and pets was still virtually unusable due to the seaweed and other flotsam and jetsam that the storms blew in. However the cleaning concessionaires sent a team in last week, with much of the job having to be done by hand due to the location. The beach is reported to be back in top condition and ready to welcome our four legged friends again.
Tree chopped
One of a group of palm trees that have become a Benissa town centre landmark, has had to be cut down due to disease. A number of the date palms were planted in 1982 at the Paseig Dolors Piera, making them 36 years old. However, the tree in question was attacked by a fungus about six years ago. Although it was hoped that the problem had been cleared up, the initial infestation had caused critical damage to the plant, meaning it needs to be cut down for safety reasons. The tree is close to a car-park and in an area where many events are held, meaning the risk of leaving the tree was judged too high.
Venezuelan crisis prompts influx

The ever-worsening financial and political crisis in Venezuela has prompted a big leap in immigrants from the troubled South American state moving to Spain to start a new life. Venezuelan immigrant numbers have increased by 58% since 2014, although many of those coming here are wealthier, upper middle class and professionals. This is partly down to the visa rules that mean if a foreigner buys a property over half a million euros in value they receive automatic residency. Madrid is the most popular destination and the Salamanca district, one of the priciest in the country, has become home to a large settlement of wealthy Venezuelans. Previously the US
would have been their favoured destination but property prices and a clampdown on Latin American immigration by the Trump administration means more are settling in Europe, with Spain being an obvious choice due to the shared language. Hyperinflation and other problems have caused massive problems for people in Venezuela, with inflation expected to hit a staggering 1 million per cent by the year end and cash being virtually worthless. An estimated 10% of the population has left the country in the last four years but the exodus is being clamped down on. However, so many of the professional classes have left that the country may take generations to recover.

“Dude... Where’s my hotel?” by Andy Mansell
Statistics revealed by the new tourist office in Benidorm’s ‘Guiri Zone’, reveal one of the most common requests they deal with is from young inebriated holidaymakers who have forgotten where they are staying. The SATE, foreign tourist assistance office, openedit’s doors in May of this year, onAvenidaDerramador, opposite the Flash Hotel, directly in the heart of the Rincon de Loix district with its hundreds of high rise hotels and apartment blocks so popular with tourists. Set up to provide information, help and support to foreign tourists who require assistance in their own language, the SATE office is manned by National Police Officers and tourism staff trained to deal with people suffering distress, in the aftermath of crime or other traumatic incidents. In the four months up until the end of August, the office dealt with 541 cases, an increase of almost 50% on the same period last year, when it was situated in Benidorm old town. Although, the majority of the visitors to the centre are victims of crime who need a sympathetic ear or help after mislaying their documents, there has been a significant increase in cases of people forgetting where they are staying. In particular, these occur early in a morning, when young tourists,
many during their first few hours in Benidorm cannot remember the name or location of their accommodation after a night of heavy drinking. When asked where they are staying, all they can recall is that the building is very tall and has a swimming pool. However, this does not prevent a problem to the staff working at the office, as all registered tourist establishments in the resort are required to inform the National Police of everyone staying under their roof. A police source said, ““Any establishment has the obligation to transfer the data of its clients to the General Directorate of the Police within a period of 24 hours from the moment of entry.” Their job is made much harder, when the confused tourist is staying in an unregistered room or apartment, such as AirBnB, where no similar registration system exists. In most cases, the police officers are able to guide them to their hotel, or often even drive them themselves, as sometimes the high rise hotel with the pool is actually located in La Cala de Finestrat, around 7 kilometres South of the office. In serious cases of lost passports and documents, the officers are also able to authorise payment of transport by taxi or TRAM to the consulate in Alicante to arrange replacements.

Euro marathon boost to Benidorm Fiesta funds
Curious pedestrians strolling along one of Benidorm’s busiest thoroughfares last week, were caught up in a fundraising event to raise funds for the resort’s annual November fiestas. The “Euro Marathon”, held around this time each year, is set up by the organising committee of the Fiestas Mayoral Pastoral, the biggest party of the year, raising money towards the week of activities. Benidorm mayor Toni Perez, along with this year’s fiesta queens and other dignitaries, were the first to participate in the marathon,

by laying a euro coin on the ground at the beginning of the Paseo de Carretera pedestrianised street in the old town. Members of the public, were invited to follow suit, laying more and more euro coins one after the other in a single straight line along the famous thoroughfare known affectionately as the ‘Walking Street’, which links the Levante and Poniente beach areas. Launching the all day marathon, organiser, Paco Marin, said enthusiastically, “Give generously and

maybe we will reach the Hotel Bali.” By nightfall, the long, snaking line of coins had almost reached the Parqued’Elche , Dove Park, with more than 4000€ donated in total. The event, which began back in 1990, before the ‘Euro Zone’ existed, was originally called the ‘20 Duro’, representing the coins lower than the 100 peseta note. In 2001, a record breaking total of more than a million pesetas was raised, with the highest amount in euros achieved a year later, when 6000€ was raised.
BENITATCHELL has been given a grant of exactly €21,883 for their Department of Social Services to spend on helping some of the more vulnerable people in the town. The largest chunk, around €17,000 will be allocated on primary care programmes such as the
home help service. This programme currently helps 20 residents and is aimed at those who live at home but struggle with daily tasks. Just over €2,600 is to be spent on a Memory Workshop for the elderly and €1,650 is going toward legal and psychological
counselling by Social Services. A final €600 is being used to finance a programme aimed at helping those with addictive behaviours and their families. The grant has been approved by the Alicante provincial health service.
A Dutch national who was sentenced to five years in jail in 2008 before going on the run has been tracked down in Javea and arrested. A European arrest warrant had been issued for crimes committed in 2008 and 2009, including drug
trafficking, fraud, forgery and various financial crimes. Investigators learnt that the 49 year old could be hiding out in Javea and National Police began looking into the case. The information was reliable
and the suspect was located and arrested at the end of August. He is due to appear in court facing extradition to his homeland. His offences in the Netherlands included the production and sale of over 100 kilos of amphetamines.

last Thursday. The incident happened at 4pm on Calle Jorge Luis Borges and as the bottles broke there was glass all over the road, prompting the police to close it while
an emergency clean-up team were called out. It is believed that the load was not properly secured; it is not known if the driver will be facing any police action.

Helping mend broken hearts DENIA Hospital now has a Cardiac Rehabilitation Unit, designed to help patients who have suffered serious heart problems. The main part of the unit is specially tailored gym equipment where recovering patients can do moderate exercise under expert supervision by a physiotherapist. A cardiologist will monitor the effects of the exercise and use the information to both help the recovery process and check the state of the subject’s cardiac health. The unit has three exercise bikes and a treadmill as well as equipment for isometric exercise, which strengthens joints and muscles that often waste away after a long illness. Head of Cardiology at the hospital, Alfonso Valle said “there is a false belief that after a cardiac episode physical exercise should not be done. However a sedentary lifestyle is inadequate and there is real evidence that cardiac rehabilitation programmes reduce mortality rates and improve the patients quality of life”. He said rehabilitation programmes reduce the risk of repeat attacks by between 20 and 25%.

A sign of trouble
THE opposition party in Alicante City have officially denounced the state of the signs, boards and plaques aimed at tourists coming to the city. Many are almost completely illegible while others are in poor condition from weather, bumps, bird mess and so on. A number of the signs are by important monuments and supposed to explain their significance to visitors.
Ciudadanos have condemned the impression this gives to tourists and asked that an extensive clean-up and repair operation be undertaken. Some are also badly placed, being lost in the proliferation of notices for businesses and road signs in the city centre. The information board in Plaza del Ayuntamiento was in such a poor state it was removed, but has not yet been replaced.
Kids dangle off the balcony while dad hits the beach
A father of two children aged twelve and eleven has been charged with child abandonment after a neighbour spotted one of them hanging out of a window of their appartment. The incident happened near Valencia where the accused is on holiday with his kids and partner. When the neighbour saw that the children were in danger she called the police who entered the property and ensured that the children

were safe. They spoke no Spanish but it was later determined that their father had gone to the beach for the day,
leaving them home alone. As the residence was not judged safe for minors of that age, on his return the Russian man was charged with child abandonment and not fulfilling safety obligations for children.

Summer storms blamed for rockfall
IT is thought that a huge chunk of rock that crashed down at Javea´s Cala Blanca had been loosened by the heavy rains in the middle of August. The stone slab had come from the roof of a cave, causing damage to the cliff and requiring the area to be sealed off. The rock in this area is quite soft and erosion caused by rain is common, leading to big and small rock slides. The public have been reminded to always be vigilant if they are climbing rocks or sitting beneath them, although in this instance thankfully the area was empty.

Cutting back ONE of Valencia´s main concert venues is planning to cut back on it´s schedule from next year. The Marina de Valencia has staged big shows this year such as a concert by Luis Miguel and Operacion Trinufo, the Spanish X-Factor, as well as a number of music

festivals. The venue has ten different spaces for events but there have been some concerns voiced. Some people have said that the area has reached saturation point and there are safety concerns
as well as complaints about the levels of noise. Accordingly next year the organisers are aiming to hold less events and aim for a higher level of quality for those that are staged, making the area more tolerable for local residents in the summer.
A number of babies born to a surrogate agency in the Ukraine may be denied Spanish passports as the Foreign Ministry looks into the legality of the scheme. Surrogacy is illegal in Spain but until recently children born in the Ukraine were able to obtain Spanish citizenship after being adopted by the parents who had paid for the process. The way the system worked was that the male parent, who was the natural father, would be given full parental

custody after the natural mother waived her right. His partner would then adopt the child. However various irregularities are being examined, including allegations that surrogate mums were receiving induced abortions so the prospective new parents would have to pay another fee. There are also reports of poor medical care during pregnancy. Around 30

The Foreign Ministry has said that each case will be dealt with on an individual basis taking into account current legislation. The babies are currently stateless and one solution being discussed is issuing the new borns with Ukrainian passports. They would then be allowed to travel to Spain where their cases could be decided in the Spanish courts.

Reports in papers like the Daily Express and Daily Mail have reported a mass expat exodus, but have conveniently forgotten to mention that the number of Brits registered on most local padrons has been falling like a “pack of cards” over the last decade. There are many reasons behind the downward trend, which include many people failing to renew their registration, despite campaigns from councils and the British embassy urging residents to do so. Nevertheless, some municipalities in Alicante Province have actually increased British numbers on
padrons in the last year, a fact ignored by the British press. There is though the sad reality that many people that came to Spain to retire over a decade ago may have passed away or chosen to return to the UK because they have lost their partner, or have simply opted to spend their last years back in Britain. Job opportunities for younger Brits have dramatically fallen over the years, and big padron falls kicked in six years ago when Spain had one of the highest unemployment rates in Europe. Exchange rates between the pound and euro are close to a third lower compared to the middle part of the previous decade, and that has also led to expats deciding over a period of time that can simply no longer afford to live in Spain. The Daily Express
seized upon padron figures for Benidorm saying that the number of registered Brits has fallen from around 5,000 before the 2007 financial crash to 2,825 last year. The article also quoted months-old figures from the National Statistics Institute showing that the number of residents from 15 EU-countries in Spain had fallen by a quarter but the number of British expats had fallen 40 percent over recent years. Despite the Brexit headline, the Express deep into the article was forced to say that changes in padron registration rules may well be the major factor in the expat residence figures dropping. Nevertheless that point was not allowed to spoil a good Brexit headline, so UK tabloid readers beware, and look for the facts rather than the fiction.

If you are a UK Expat and are tax resident in Spain with investments in the UK, you may have found that getting a consistent answer as to how these will be treated for tax purposes in Spain and/or the UK is difficult to obtain! I am talking about the chargeable gains, growth, dividends and interest made on your investments either when they are sold, cashed in or kept in UK based investments.
The existing double taxation treaty means you would usually pay tax in one country or the other but not both. However; the way Capital Gains (CGT) tax works and is calculated here in Spain
The UK has a CGT allowance of currently £11,700 per person in the 18/19 tax year, the UK tax year running from the 6th of April to the following 5th of April. Joint UK assets have an allowance per person and apply to each person’s share of the investment or holdings. Trusts have a lower UK allowance, however there is no such CGT allowance in Spain.
If you have Unit Trusts, Shares or ISAs, then these will be potentially liable to an annual Spanish Savings tax. If an Investment or asset is sold, potentially UK and/or Spanish CGT is also payable. The Spanish tax year is January 1st to December 31st each year. Spanish Tax residents will also be potentially liable to Spanish CGT on the same asset although an allowance would
be made for any tax already paid in the UK. No consideration will be given for the UK personal CGT allowance, so an additional sum of Spanish Tax may be due. To calculate any liability to Spanish CGT, Spanish Savings Tax and/ or UK CGT a few calculations will need to be made. It is therefore crucial to take professional financial advice before any investments or assets are sold or cashed in, since it may be possible to reduce the liability. Therefore holding UK investments for a Spanish Tax resident can be a bit of a tax trap and a complex one to say the least! The Academy of Medical Royal Colleges says too often correspondence contains complex medical jargon rather than plain and simple English. Most people are eating the right amount of salt (BPT) - More research seems to be contradicting the oft-stated notion that we eat too much salt. The latest such study appeared in The Lancet, one of the oldest and most prestigious medical journals. The study found that for the vast majority of people there is no health benefit from a low-salt diet and no harm from the average salt consumption of most people around the globe today. The lead scientist working on this study, Dr. Andrew Mente of McMaster University, worked with researchers from around the globe to monitor the salt intake and health of over 95,000 individuals in 18 countries for an average of eight years. They also monitored the associations between sodium and potassium intake and blood pressure and cardiovascular disease and mortality. They found that most people around the world already eat in the healthy

range of sodium consumption - between 3,000 and 5,000 mg per day - and that people who consumed salt at the higher end of the healthy range had better health outcomes and fewer incidences of heart attacks. Only in China, where consumption was over 5,000 mg per day, was intake associated with cardiovascular disease and stroke. In addition, they found a positive effect of increased potassium consumption, noting, “All major cardiovascular outcomes decreased with increasing potassium intake in all countries.” Despite this new research the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) continues to insist that Americans should consume no more than 2,300 mg per day of sodium and the American Heart Association recommends a daily maximum of 1,500 mg. Americans
currently consume an average of 3,400 mg per day. Dr. Martin O’Donnell, also at McMaster University and a co-author of the study, said, “Public health strategies should be based on best evidence. There is no convincing evidence that people with moderate or average sodium intake need to reduce their sodium intake for prevention of heart disease and stroke.”

Men are more likely to have highrisk jobs that are stressful, dangerous and deadly such as mining, logging and construction etc. Macho men - men are encouraged by our culture to be tough and independent. Some men could believe that visiting doctors or complaining of feeling ill are threats to their masculinity. Males, particularly teenagers, tend to
act as if they are invulnerable. This can lead behaviours such as drug or alcohol binges, or reckless driving. Women are more likely to have regular contact with doctors because of ‘women’s issues’. Male depression is a known high-risk factor for suicide. The good news is that these days more and more men are becoming health conscious. They are more likely to partake in screening campaigns (such as PSA blood test for prostate cancer) and seek medical advice than ever before. They are even taking on the concept of preventive health care in the form of well man health checks. When required, it can be shifted to the axle with the most traction. Despite air suspension fitted as standard, the Q8 has a jarring ride especially on the 22-inch alloys fitted to the topspec Vorsprung model. It’s not particularly sporty, either, but it’s pretty quick in 50 TDI guise. The Q8’s at its best covering
long distances on smooth motorways, although technology such as fourwheel steering helps around town. Ride aside, the Q8 offers typical plushness. It’s expensive, but it makes a statement - and you’ll love or hate the way it looks. A strong yet efficient 3.0 TDI with a mild hybrid system provides the dynamics which are implied by the muscular exterior design. With the permanent quattro allwheel drive and a ground clearance of up to 254 mm, the SUV coupé can continue when paved roads end. At 4,986 mm long, 1,995 mm wide and 1,705 mm high, it is 66 mm shorter, but has become 27 mm wider than the Q7. In the UK, S line specification that is equipped with a host of standard features ranging from sport-configured adaptive air suspension and MMI Navigation Plus with MMI Touch to HD Matrix LED headlights, will be available from market launch. Soon after, an even more comprehensively specified Vorsprung version will join the line-up.

A car driven by a sixty four year old local man, was involved in a head on collision with a truck, that left him trapped in his vehicle for thirty minutes whilst firefighters used cutting equipment to release him. The victim was transferred to the Marina Baixa Hospital in Villajoyosa, where he remains in a critical condition, whilst the driver of the truck was unharmed. In a further incident last Sunday morning a man was run over by a van on the dual
carriageway, Calle Alfonso Puchades, a busy ring road in the centre of the resort. The victim, who received head wounds from the collision, was taken to the same hospital where he remains, receiving treatment for a suspected brain injury. Announcing the grim road death statistics, which covered the two peak summer months of July and August, head of the DGT National road agency, Pere Navarro, said, “The data is not good this summer, but there are no surprises after three years of continuous increases, caused by speeding motorists.” “A total of 259 people have died on Spanish roads in 236 fatal accidents during July and August 2018, 34 more dead than in the same period of 2017, representing an increase of 15%” explained the road chief. Of the 259 people who
died, 198 lost their lives on conventional roads, representing 76% of the total number of deaths, while the majority were road exits (37%) , followed by frontal collisions (29%) and lateral and fronto-lateral collisions (15%). Vulnerable users accounted for 34% of the deaths (66 dead of the 259). Of these, the majority were motorcyclists (52), followed by pedestrians (23) and cyclists (8). During the months of July and August there were 88.5 million long-distance journeys by road, with an average of 2.8 million daily movements, representing an increase of 1% compared to those that were registered last summer (87.7 million. This figure could help to explain the increase in deaths this year, following two years where they decreased, pointed out Navarro.

There was a full Premier League programme at the weekend and a Monday Night game which gave the Alfaz Fantasy Football League a total of 32 goals, 5 clean sheets, 46 yellow cards( most this Season) and 1 red one which was Manchester United´s young striker Marcus Rashford who lost his head in United´s clash against Burnley at Turf Moor. The goals continue to fly in, in the Premier League with the average score of each game being 3 goals,when you consider that 5 penalties have been missed this Season, 3 at the weekend by Brighton´s Gross, Southampton´s Charlie Austin and Manchester United´s want away star Paul Pogba it could have been a bigger tally. Pauline´s Vodka Army advanced 2 points clear of Clarky´s Deportivoclarkoruna at the top of the A.F.F.L. while Eric´s team Peaky Blinders leapfrogged 5 teams to land in 3rd spot and are only 6 points away from the Summit. Macca´s Albir Villains also made good progress by jumping up 14 places and are now 10 points behind Peaky Blinders. Down at the foot of the table,Kim´s Ginger United can´t seem to make any progress even though they scored 19 points this week. It looks as though it´s going to be a long Season for kim! Last Season Harley´s team Ginger Ninjar finished bottom of our Junior League but this Year they look as though they
mean business as they moved 3 points ahead of Jack´s team Balutellitubbies at the top of the league. Olly F.C. are well in contention in 3rd place 7 points above former leaders of this Section William & Henry. At the other end of the table,Roo & Woos Wombles have closed the gap on Harrison´s Boden´s Boys to a single point. Pauline´s Vodka Army are once again setting the pace at the top of our Mark Carter Ladies Section as they have raced to a formidable 10 point advantage over Jeanette´s Jin Dream Team. Two Managers who are Liverpool Fans Winnie & Nikki must have been upset when Liverpool´s star Goalkeeper Alisson gave away that goal against the Foxes which stopped then making it 4 clean sheets in a row. However, thier teams Le Hombre Rioja & Liverpool 94 are still up there with the leaders.No change at the bottom, as Kim´s Ginger United have slipped further behind Kate´s team The Bairns, the gap now an unlucky 13 points. UNDER SEIGE Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho can now concentrate on on-field matters after reaching a deal with Spanish authorities over a long-running tax dispute. He was accused of owing nearly €3.3m in undeclared image rights revenue for 2011 and 2012, when he was Real Madrid manager - an allegation he disputed. Mourinho has agreed to pay a fine of €2m, after earlier saying that he had paid all the taxes he owed. The El Mundo newspaper reported that he had accepted a one-year suspended jail sentence. But sources close to the manager said no prison term had been imposed or accepted. Authorities launched the image rights case against Mourinho in June last year.
His representatives, Gestifute Media, said at the time that he had paid more than €26m in tax at an average rate of more than 41% while living in
Spain from 2010 to 2013. In 2015, Gestifute said, he accepted a settlement agreement regarding previous years.
Tennis treat awaits
THERE’S a potential humdinger of a tennis match in store in New York tonight, as Rafa Nadal takes on Juan Martin del Potro in the US Open semi-finals. Their exciting Wimbledon quarter-final five-setter went almost unnoticed as all eyes turned towards England’s World Cup semi-final against Croatia back in July, but the two men served up a treat including an absorbing final set decider that produced some breathtaking tennis. The US Open has produced del Potro’s single Grand Slam title way back in 2009, whilst Nadal is the number one seed at Flushing Meadows. The Spaniard is proving to be a thorn in del Potro’s side this year, having thrashed him in the French Open semi-final back in May.
At least both players will have had plenty of time to recover from two gruelling quarter-final encounters, with the Argentine’s match against big-serving John Isner running to four sets in stifling humidity. “I’m so happy to reach another semi-final in my favourite tournament that is very special to me,” del Potro said. Defending champion Nadal meanwhile had to dig deep to win a classic five set clash with Austria’s Dominic Thiem in what was the longest match of this year’s tournament, finishing at 2.00 am local time. “It was a great battle. It is good to have two days that probably gives me the chance to be 100% in the semi-finals,” Nadal said.

England expects ENGLAND manager Gareth Southgate has a fresh factor to take into account as his side take to the field again this weekend after their excellent World Cup campaign:- the public expectation factor! That did not come into play for his young squad in Russia in what seems like ages ago, but inevitably the prospects for his side will be talked up, as England face Spain at Wembley in their opening Uefa Nations League game on this Saturday, before playing Switzerland at Leicester’s King Power Stadium in a friendly on Tuesday. Southgate has called up Fulham’s uncapped goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli for the two matches, while midfielder Adam Lallana and striker Raheem Sterling are both out due to injury.
