Your Weekend Starts Here!

BRITISH WOMAN

JUMPS FROM BRIDGE THERE was an outpouring of grief and sympathy after an 84 year old British woman, a long term resident of Javea, jumped off a bridge in the town in what now appears to be a case of suicide. Witnesses, including staff at the “Weekender” office in the Marina Alta town, saw several police cars and firemen race to the port at around 7.00 on Tuesday evening, followed quickly after by two ambulances.

Whilst others are busy marketing your property, we're busy selling it! We'll get you moving!

The Guardia Civil later confirmed that an 84 year old Briton had jumped off the bridge at Avenida de Augusta and added that she had almost certainly intended to take her own life. She lived close to the spot where she died and had done so for several years, the spokesperson said. Local expatriates and Spaniards alike expressed their sadness on social media.

SPAIN´S POPULATION has gone over 47 million for the first time in six years, boosted by foreigners moving to the country, with officiallyregistered British nationals falling to just under a quarter of a million. The figures from the National Institute of Statistics are based on returns up to January 1st, and show that despite pleas and campaigns from the British embassy in Madrid and local authorities, the number of British people registered on local padrons continues to fall. The padrons are used to calculate population statistics and local council budgetary grants, with Moroccans continuing to be the largest

by Alex Trelinski

national group of nonSpaniards, totalling 812,412, followed by Romanians, who make up 669,434, and Brits third at 249,015. That British figure is down from statistics quoted over the last year as showing around 280 thousand Brits registered on local padrons, with a British embassy official recently stating that “tens of thousands of people are living under the radar”. Nearly nine million people are aged over 65 in Spain, with the over-65s making up 19.3 per cent of the population, whilst foreigners account for just over 10.7 per cent of people, or

around five million. British nationals living in Spain are the oldest of nonSpanish residents, with an average age of 53.6, followed by the Germans at 49.2 and the French at 42.6. In terms of proportion rather than number, the Balearic Islands are the ‘most foreign’ region, with 17.8 per cent of inhabitants being non-Spanish; Catalunya has the secondhighest foreigner ratio, at 15.1 per cent, followed by the Murcia region on 14.1 per cent. Non-Spaniards have not broken the five million barrier since 2014, but the number of new “foreigners” in 2018 was nearly double the figure for 2017.

Red card for rowdy Brit footballers THE Guardia Civil were at Alicante airport to greet 25 members of a British football team as they touched down at Alicante airport last week. The pilot on the Easyjet flight reported bad behaviour from them when he was in the air, requesting the presence of the Guardia when the plane landed. The officers were waiting at the landing bay when the flight arrived just before 11 in the evening and then forcibly removed 25 of the group, part of a contingent of 40 players, staff and fans. Witnesses said they were clearly under heavy influence of alcohol and the 25 are expected to be charged with public disorder crimes. However this is more likely to lead to fines than any jail sentence and it is understood that the group have been released. The offenders have not been formally identified

by Simon Russell

by the authorities but are known to be an amateur team from the Bristol area, where the flight had taken off from.

They were said to be drinking alcohol they brought with them during the flight, which is illegal and gives grounds for the charges. Sources say that when the group

were led off by the Guardia the remaining passengers cheered and applauded, indicating the offenders had been extremely disruptive to others on board.

Man opens fire on neighbours with air rifle

A man who is the subject of a legal suit filed by several of his apartment block neighbours is likely to be in further trouble as he allegedly opened fire on them with an air rifle, wounding one

person in the process. The incident happened in northern Alicante City last weekend when police were called to the scene. Witnesses said that

the 58 year old man had started shooting from his balcony after earlier threatening people with the weapon. After he began firing several pellets missed but one person was hit in the leg. The police of-

ficers searched the accused’s apartment and found an air rifle which was sufficient evidence to arrest and charge him. The defendant has been released on bail and is subject to a restraining order.

All my readers should consider attending one of these essential events

Every week Chorus publish articles to help Brits here in Spain navigate safely and securely through areas such as investing, retirement planning, pension transfers, succession planning, tax and legal matters. This week I felt my column inches would be even better served by telling you all about a very important series of seminars that are returning to our area on May8th, 9th and 10th, which cover all these important subjects. One of the most common pieces of feedback I’ve experienced over the years from thousands of expats here in Spain is that sometimes it’s hard to know

who to believe when it comes to vital information regarding your pensions, investments and tax planning. You can ask 3 people a question and you get 3 different answers, and often this means people are getting information on critical subjects from social media or a guy at the bar! The Finance Tour returns to Spain for the third year, bringing experts from FTSE listed UK institutions, to answer your questions directly. The seminars start with a short presentation from each company, followed by an open Q+A. At the end of the session, you can enjoy a

coffee whilst having the opportunity to speak one-on-one with the panel of experts. For those who already hold investments like ISAs, UK bonds/ platforms, QROPS/Spanish Investment Bonds, this gives you a great opportunity to ensure your product is appropriate and working for you in the best way. For those considering a new pension transfer or investment or trying to understand matters such as Wealth Tax or IHT here in Spain, this is an unprecedented opportunity to speak directly with the product providers before you go ahead

and seek independent advice. I appreciate there seems to be a different seminar, breakfast meeting or event nearly every week in Spain, but The Finance Tour is truly unique in that it gives you the chance to hear directly from a group of trusted companies who manage the pensions and investments of over 25 million customers worldwide. Look out for The Finance Tour’s adverts in page 6 of the Weekender or visitwww.thefinancetour.com for bookings and information. We really hope to see as many of you as possible at these essential events.

Man accused of raping 17-year-old British girl

WALKS FREE AN Italian national accused of raping a minor on a cruise ship visiting Spain waters has been released without charge as the man had no connection to Spain. The alleged assault took place on a ship sailing between Mallorca and Valencia last week when the man approached the 17 year old British girl who was travelling with her parents. It is alleged he sexually abused her in a cabin and was arrested after the incident was reported. The arrest was made in Valencia after the ship docked in the city but the presiding judge said he had no choice but to release the man as he was not Spanish and had no property, residency or other connection with the country. The man was freed by a court

in the city after a judge said he did not have jurisdiction to probe the allegation because it happened in Panamanian territory and international waters, will reportedly the judge will urge Panama, the UK and Italy – to take action. This follows a change in Spanish law five years ago which said that Spain could only pursue “international crimes” if the accused was Spanish or a nationalised foreigner. It is not clear at this stage if he will be tried in another country. The alleged victim is believed to have continued on the cruise with her parents but the suspect was not able to get back on board the cruise ship.

MONEY BAG THIEF NAILED by Alex Trelinski

Thief´s puncture nail.

A THIEF who punctured dfghzdg car tyres in a plan to rob people who had just withdrawn money from banks in the Mar Menor area, has been arrested by the Murcia region Guardia Civil. The unnamed man was wanted by authorities for numerous similar crimes, including a spate further north in Villajoyosa, in a well-honed routine that has been practised by other thieves across Spain. The crook would watch banks around San Javier and he would wait to see if customers were exiting the premises with a bag. His stake-outs was often at the start of each month when business owners would be walking out with workers wages. The bank user´s car would then have a tyre punctured with a nail, and the man would then drive behind it and wait until it got out of the main urban area, before indicting to his

“mark” that there was a puncture. He would then offer help with changing the tyre, and whilst the motorist was distracted, the money bag was stolen and the crook would beat a hasty retreat Increased Guardia patrols in an operation codenamed, Rontor, caught the thief “in the act”, as they found him inside in a car using an illegal frequency jammer, which stopped owners automatically closing their vehicles in addition to helping him get inside them.

Easter and the fact that it rolls into the Mayday holiday period. As with recent years special operations and measures have been put in place to handle the huge increase of road traffic and the accidents that will inevitably accompany it. These measures will run until midnight on 22 April.

Woman arrested for gender violence by Simon Russell

LOCAL Police in Valencia arrested a 50 year old woman for assaulting her partner while under the influence of alcohol and drugs. The agents were on patrol in the Monteolivete area when they were called to the incident and tracked the woman to a nearby park. She was clearly intoxicated and became aggressive to the police before being detained when she admitted to the assault on her male partner. He needed treatment for his injuries and said that he was regularly hit, threatened and insulted by the detainee who has substance abuse issues.

The blaze started at around 11.00 pm with fire crews from Almoradi, Elche, Crevillente, Orihuela and Torrevieja joining forces to put out the blaze within three hours. The unit had no workers inside because it was a Sunday, but the farm owners said that 20 thousand chickens inside all perished.

180 years for child porn by Simon Russell

AN Alicante court has sentenced a man to 180 years in prison after he was found guilty of 38 crimes of producing and distributing pornographic material featuring minors. The FBI had been originally tracking the man and then transferred the case to the Guardia Civil which launched its own investigation. This led to the arrest of the 36 year old defendant last year who had been luring minors through social networks. The videos were described as “especially humiliating and degrading” and were distributed through an online network. Despite the seeming life sentence, under the Spanish legal system the accused is unlikely to serve more than 18 years in jail.

BARS RAIDED

Mayor expelled after backing gender violence aggressor

More than fifty National Police officers, using sniffer dogs, took part in a series of co-ordinated raids on six bars in the busy, ‘English Zone’ of Benidorm last week. Officers representing a number of specialised units, were despatched to the six establishments, which included some of those most popular with British tourists and locals, as part of a clampdown on drug trafficking activities, robbery, petty theft and alcohol related crime. The operation involved synchronised raids, on the premises, which resulted in the arrest of four employees working illegally without permits. A further 28 charges were issued forcrimes, including

possession and consumption of narcotic substances, illegal possession of weapons and disobedience. With Easter falling late this year, the National Police in Benidorm are expecting the coming weeks to be some of the busiest of the year, as an influx of foreign and domestic tourist descend on the resort for the long Semana Santa celebrations, which traditionally herald the start of Summer. A number of officers from nearby divisions have been seconded to Benidorm, to cope with the expected influx of extra visitors and help enforce the clampdown on drug and alcohol related crime, robbery and street brawls.

THE PSOE party in Valencia have expelled a former mayor and current mayoral candidate after he expressed support for a man who stabbed his wife 16 times in front of their young daughter. It is believed that Mr Bono knew the criminal before the violent act took place and that the pair were neighbours. The PSOE called the former mayor’s behaviour completely unacceptable and gave Mr Bono the chance to resign from the party before he was expelled according to a spokesman.

AN ELEMENTARY school in Barcelona has removed more than 200 children’s books from its library because they allegedly perpetuate sexist stereotypes. Two books to receive the axe include “Little Red Riding Hood” and “Sleeping Beauty”, whilst non-fiction publications for “learning the alphabet, colours, and behaviour” were also reportedly discovered to perpetuate sexist stereotypes. Prompt action by firefighters from Benidorm fire station averted a potentially serious incident, when a car engine burst into flames in the center of Albir last Saturday afternoon. The fire crew was called into action around 15.50h, when a BMW X3, containing a family, caught alight, from a fire inside the vehicle’s engine compartment. The driver immediately,

brought the car to a stop opposite Albir Supermarket nearby to the Katus Hotel, before quickly evacuating the occupants from the vehicle. When the fire crew arrived, the flames had spread to a neighbouring car parked on the roadside, which was burning fiercely. The flames were extinguished, within an hour of the fire breaking out, however both cars were badly damaged by the blaze.

the Catalan government, and other schools in Barcelona are also taking inventory of potentially problematic books as well. At least 30 per cent of the books in The Tàber School’s library were considered “toxic,” and 10 per cent were written from a “gender perspective,” whilst 60 per cent of the books had problems that were far less serious.

One mother involved in the book selections said that they were not looking to ban specific books, and just wanted to address sexism on a broader scale. “The type of books children

read is very important because traditional books replicate gender stereotypes and it is good to have books that break these,” said Estel Clusella, head of the school’s parents association.

HOME CROOKS CAUGHT by Alex Trelinski

A COLUMBIAN gang that robbed homes across Spain including properties in Alicante and Valencia provinces has been arrested and put in front of a Torrevieja judge. The group consisted of five men and a woman, with four of them refused bail after their court appearance. The gang is said to be behind dozens of crimes locally and nationally including Madrid, Toledo, Lugo, Cuenca, and Valladolid, with the two ringleaders based in a small Madrid area town. Last December, the gang targetted a property in Guardamar, only to be surprised to find the owner inside, who was then stabbed in his arm by a screwdriver. The crooks fled the house and fled in a getaway car that was waiting for them.

COLD CASH by Alex Trelinski

OVER 30 THOUSAND euros in fake banknotes stashed in a portable fridge were discovered on wasteland in the Murcia region at Los Garres, with the National Police subsequently arresting two men. The detainees were described as being some of the “most active distributors in Spain” of counterfeit money, with the fridge contents all in fake 20 euro notes. The duo used small businesses across the Valencia and Murcia regions to unload small sums of the counterfeit cash printed by them, in order to avoid arousing any suspicion .

Quick thinking police save life LOCAL Police in Alicante, who were called out for what was originally thought to be a man who had suffered a knife wound, had to act quickly to save the victim’s life. Officers from the Fast Intervention Group were alerted at around 7pm last Friday and found the 39 year old lying in a pool of blood surrounded by building equipment at a property in the del Remedio area. He had an extremely nasty wound in his arm and was in

by Simon Russell

an understandably panicked state. The seven officers immediately put their emergency medical training to use, with two determining the extent of the wound, two moving the man to a comfortable position, two talking to him to keep him conscious and calm while the seventh arranged an ambulance. The officers focusing on the wound decided it required a tourniquet

which they applied and succeeded in staunching the heavy bleeding. This was probably what kept the man alive until the SAMU ambulance arrived and took over treatment before transferring the victim to hospital. Once there he underwent immediate surgery and is now recovering well. It appears the accident occurred after the man tripped and fell onto a power saw while he was carrying out building works.

Man drowns at waterfall

A 48 year old man died at a popular local attraction this week while swimming with his family. The victim was at the Chella waterfalls near Xativa (Valencia) with his wife and two children on Monday when he went bathing in a pool at the foot of the falls. After he failed to return his wife contacted the emergency services and a special rescue group attended the remote beauty spot along with the Guardia Civil, local police and a

forestry fire-fighters unit. They searched the banks of the pool and then a diving team started a search in the water where they came across the victim’s body under two metres of water. A doctor confirmed his death, the cause of which is unknown. Rescuers said that the water was extremely cold despite the warm weather and this may have been a contributory factor.

Business & Finance Jumbo bill for giant of the skies

The giant plane dwarves vehicles on the runway.

A Russian Antonov, one of the world’s largest cargo planes, has been parked at Alicante airport since the end of March, something the airport is charging over a thousand euros a day for the privilege of. The plane, from the Ivory Coast, landed on 28 March without cargo and has not yet set a departure

date. “Parking fees” are calculated on the weight of the craft and duration of the stopover, meaning that the owners have clocked up a bill of over €20,000 to date. Apparently the plane is awaiting instructions for loading and is then capable of flying anywhere in the world. The Antonov has a capacity of 150 tons and can

also carry 88 passengers but to give an idea of the size of the cargo an Antonov was used to transport yachts for the Volvo World Tour and can also carry helicopters. This is only the second time an aircraft of this size has been at Alicante-Elche airport although the last visitor, another Antonov, only stayed for a few hours.

Sleep at night investing?

I often hear from my clients, “I am not being greedy, I just want to see a decent return on my money without taking too much risk”. In other words, I do not want to see large fluctuations and have any stock market shocks with my investments in the future. Most people want to see a return higher than inflation and higher than the banks can provide, and risk means different things to different people and we are all well aware of that. It is simply not possible to invest without taking some degree of risk. However, there are people who simply cannot cope with the ups and downs of the share markets and simply feel better off staying with the bank, even if that means watching their money get eaten by inflation.

This is usually because they may feel that any investment product is complicated, difficult to understand and a potentially rocky ride, so somewhat scary. Ultimately they are cautious investors.

So is there something that can alleviate these concerns? You may remember life companies in the UK offering products that use funds with a smoothing effect of returns? Returns that provide the potential to beat inflation and interest rates over the medium term. Well, even if you don’t know or remember then let me explain. There is a simple investment solution offered by a well-known UK life company and it´s available to UK Expats here in Spain. The life company balance the investments in such a way that the risk is kept to a minimum. Investors in the fund can then feel comfort in knowing that if the

17

share markets take a tumble it is likely they will feel a ripple rather than a large wave, therefore allowing more peace of mind. We cannot predict that these funds will never go down in value, and of course, past performance is by no means a prediction of future performance, however, we can say that this extremely well known UK life company has a good pedigree of past successes. A Weekend in Berlin by Yvonne Hollywood, Worldwide Horizons Berlin is the capital of Germany and a great place to spend a long weekend. This cool and cultural city is chock full of historical places to visit. Even during a chilly winter grey weekend, it holds a certain magic. David Bowie, the 1970’s artist, said “Berlin, the

greatest cultural extravaganza that one could imagine”.

His most famous album “Heroes” was recorded in Berlin in 1977 and was dark and atmospheric like the city’s history. The actual song was inspired by Bowie noticing a couple kissing standing by the Berlin Wall. Now, in 2019, visiting the city for the first time, I find myself thinking back, as I am sure that so many do, to where I was at the moment of when the Berlin Wall was toppled. In fact, the area where you find what remains of the Berlin Wall is a little off the main tourist track, not on the tourist bus routes and the Wall itself stands rather lost, lonely and tawdry. Yet the fact that it was such a strong symbol, a physical and political reminder of a divided city for so many years (1961 to 1989), means that even on a dark, cold sleeting night, it carries magic and fascination all of its own. This 1316 m section of the Wall,

located near the centre, on Muhlenstrasse in FriedrichshainKreuzberg is now known as the East Side Gallery. In 1990 the east side of the Wall was painted with 105 paintings by artists from all over the world. It is now one of the most famous openair art installations in the world, and well worth the quick diversion for the visit. It is, of course, free, and is illuminated at night. So, for a weekend in cool Berlin, where should you stay? This writer stayed in a southeastern borough of Berlin towards Berlin Schonefeld Airport, called Neukolln. It is an attractive, creative and trendy area. There are art galleries, vintage fashion, numerous kebab shops and hip boutiques. Not everyone’s cup of tea, but this is the largest city in Germany and there is something for everyone in terms of areas to stay. For those who like somewhere relatively central, easy to get to with the inexpensive ubiquitous ubers that are everywhere and with the best bakeries, this is perfect and affordable. Faced with only a weekend break and so much to see, there is only one option, a Hop On Hop Off Bus. Especially if visiting on a sleeting freezing cold day. There are various options available and do not be put off by some of the reviews on the internet stating they are not worth taking in Berlin. In the writer’s opinion, regardless of the weather, there is so much to see spread over a large area, these buses circulating the city on a particular route with designated stops are perfect for jumping on and off to visit attractions (most tours last 2-3 hours). Alternatively, you can choose to simply stay on the whole tour from start to finish as much can be seen from the actual bus and the narrative is in

s e vera l languages. Many tours have an excellent English-speaking guide who makes history come alive with facts and anecdotes. A suggested starting place for a tour (and also a place to potentially stay) is probably the most important square in Berlin, Alexanderplatz, full of shops, restaurants, a transport hub and always busy with its iconic 1960’s TV tower. You can pay on the bus and many of the top tourist attractions you will see correspond to the second world war and post-war. Checkpoint Charlie, for example, was the main crossing point between east and west Berlin following the division of the city and the Wall being built. Now it is somewhat underwhelming but is it is not too much a stretch of the imagination to picture the queues and officials standing there from years ago. By contrast, the modern Reichstag with its huge glass dome appears impressive and the Brandenburg Gate, even in driving sleet, is a historical symbol of peace and the past. Berlin also has greenery and beauty in the form of the parks and forests, Tiergarten being one of them, and world-class museums. A weekend is not enough time to spend on Museum Island, which is the name of the northern point of an island in the river Spree in Central Berlin, hosting five famous museums and now a UNESCO world heritage site in 1999. If the kids get bored, also on the bus tour itinerary is the Berlin Zoo, one of the most comprehensive collections of endangered animals in the world and rated as one of the best in Europe.

DNA is a fantastic analysis, which of fic scienti of piece course was sussed out by boffins from Leicester University. It´s not all about tracking down criminals, but can be used for important historical discoveries, like finding out that the ancestors of the people who built Stonehenge travelled west across the Mediterranean from where you would find modern day Turkey, before reaching Britain. Researchers in London compared DNA extracted from Neolithic human

remains found in Britain with that of people alive at the same time in Europe. The Neolithic inhabitants appear to have travelled from Anatolia (modern Turkey) to Iberia before winding their way north, and got to Britain around 4,000BC. The migration to Britain was just one part of a general, massive expansion of people out of Anatolia in 6,000BC that introduced farming to Europe, after travelling across the Mediterranean.

DNA reveals that Neolithic Britons were largely descended from groups who took the Mediterranean route, either hugging the coast or hopping from island-to-island on boats before getting to good old Britain. When the researchers analysed the DNA of early British farmers, they found they most closely resembled Neolithic people from Iberia (modern Spain and Portugal). These Iberian farmers were descended from people who had journeyed across the Mediterranean.

World News World’s most dangerous bird claims a victim A cassowary unlikely killer.

BIRDS kill a handful of people each year, usually after collisions with cars or aeroplanes while avian flu threatened to develop into an epidemic after crossing over to humans. However the sub-category of the bird deaths mortality tables (if there is such a thing, and there probably is) of people killed by actual bird attacks is so small as to be virtually unmeasurable. It now seems that the actuaries or whoever measures these things may have to dust off their records, as this week a 75 year old Florida man was killed

by his pet cassowary, an ostrich type creature dubbed The Worlds Most Dangerous Bird (my capitals). The victim, named as Marvin Hajos, was found in his pet’s enclosure in a pool of blood with deep lacerations caused by the creature. He was still alive but sadly died later in hospital from his wounds. It is believed that the unfortunate Mr Hajos tripped when feeding the cassowary which then attacked him, feeling threatened. They weigh up to 60 kilos and grow to about six feet tall and a spokesman for

a local zoo said that they “can slice any predator open with their talons or even kill them with a well aimed kick”. Despite the somewhat worrying threat of disembowelment or being kicked to death, the only other confirmed cassowary killing was almost a century ago in their native Australia that of a small boy who was teasing one. This case highlights the fact that whatever you think of the good people of America, they are certainly adept at coming up with original ways to shuffle off this mortal coil.

Macron - We will rebuild it The Notre Dame cathedral in Paris.

FRANCE’S President Macron has made a pledge to reconstruct the severely fire damaged Notre-Dame Cathedral, 48 hours after the blaze that threatened to completely destroy one of the world’s most iconic landmarks. The ambitious target means that, if achieved, it will be rebuilt in time for 2024 when Paris hosts the Summer Olympics and the eyes of the world will be on the city. Standing in front of the charred cathedral Mr Macron said “We’ll rebuild Notre-Dame even more beautifully and I want it to be completed in five years, we can do it”. Nonetheless experts in the field doubted the reality of the five year plan. Eric Fischer, who is heading up the restoration of the 1,000 year old Strasbourg Cathedral, said the project could take decades while Frederic Letoffe, who leads the Restoration of Historic Monuments Association, said 10 to 15 years was a more realistic

by Simon Russell

time-scale. After starting on Monday evening the fire soon took hold and it was 15 hours before it was extinguished, destroying most of the wooden roof and, most famously, it’s spire which is no longer dominating the local skyline. However it is still too early to gauge the full extent of the damage, leading many to query President Macron’s promises while not armed with the full facts. The focus has now turned to the cause of the blaze with “theories” (or conspiracy theories) running from Islamic terrorists - something there is no evidence to support - to a spark from the renovation works that were taking place before the fire started. All current evidence points to it being an accident, albeit it one that has struck at the heart of many French men and women, Parisians in particular.

Deadly doorstep delivery

POLICE in Canada are looking for a man who fired a crossbow point blank at a woman after posing as a parcel delivery man. The event happened at the end of last year in Ontario, but the police have asked the public for help after failing to identify the aggressor despite several clues. The biggest of these is the presence of CCTV footage taken at the residence where the victim lived and released for the first time this week. The clip shows a white or Latino moustachioed man in uniform, wearing a cap but with his face still visible. He is holding a large box and when the 44 year old woman answers the door he fires the crossbow which was concealed in the box, spearing her in the chest.

by Simon Russell

He then fled to a waiting truck, regarded as a further clue. The victim survived but her injuries were described as life threatening; though she is expected to live doctors say that her wounds will be “life changing” and she will never make a full recovery after several major organs were damaged. The woman saw

The crossbow killer

the man but did not know him and they also exchanged a few words before he fired. The nature of these has led the investigators to believe he may have been paid by someone else to murder the woman. She was targeted at her home in a middle class suburb of the city and local residents are both shocked and worried after the event.

From 23 to 29 April they will be open from 9am to 2pm and then at 4pm to 10pm (although it will not be open to the public on Sunday 28 April due to the elections). The new service is to help students who need to do extra studying over

by Simon Russell the Easter period and will resume in May to July, the period leading up to final university application exams and other key tests. Many libraries across the Valencian Community will also be extending their hours for this reason - please check with them or your local town hall.

CONCERTS

We´ve had some excellent LED street lighting put up, as well as some much-need resurfacing, which has been long overdue for the best part of a decade. On the basis of what´s happened in the last fortnight, can we have a local vote every year? Gareth Hicklin, Los Montesinos. EDITOR:- Many municipalities across Alicante Province are getting some springtime spruce-ups, but as the work signs say across the region, the projects are paid for by grants from the Alicante Provincial Council, and not local authorities trying to “buy” votes.

So we have a potential six extra months dangling on the end of the rope marked Brexit, and probably longer after that, so long as President Macron allows it. Thanks heavens at least that with the Easter holiday, we are getting a break from this non-stop Westminster pantomime, and the recess will allow the politicians to take a deep breath and think about what they are really doing. I watched the latest Open Letter from British ambassador Simon Manley on the Brits in Spain Facebook page, and I honestly wondered why he bothered, as there was nothing really new that he could say(EDITOR:-report on page 16). He just seems to spout the government line, which is so irritating. Mary O´Connor, Denia. EDITOR:- Simon Manley is a civil servant and his job is to reflect the position of the UK government bosses, or otherwise he´d be back in Britain within a few hours! Ironically, Manley finishes his tenure in the summer to be replaced by a former government Brexit department PR guy.

The Easter school holidays back home have brought out families for a break over here, with some of the behaviour leaving a lot to be desired....and I´m not talking about the children. A bar I go to had a few of them in over the weekend, and approaching midnight, some of the kids(barely aged five or six) who should have been in bed many hours earlier, were just running around inbetween some inebriated customers.. That´s not the children´s fault, but I squarely point the finger at their drunken parents who I wondered whether they were even capable of getting back to where they were staying. Am I missing something, or is old age hitting me badly? Marion Allott, Benidorm.

New pine tree for town square in Alfaz del Pi

An emblematic symbol, representing 183 years of history in a Marina Baixa town received its official blessing last Sunday. The latest in a long line of pine trees, which have stood in the Plaza Mayor, at the historic centre of L’Alfas del Pi, was unveiled to coincide with Palm Sunday at a ceremony led by Pastor, Miguel Angel Schiller. planted in 1786, when the small settlement was a dependency of nearby Polop. Owing to constrictions caused by the paving of the square, the trees, only lasted between sixty and seventy years, before drying up and dying. This new tree is the seventh in line, replacing the previous pine,

which was planted in 1949. The pine tree has an important symbolic meaning for the municipality, since it was granted independence from the Barony of Polop on April 16, 1836 and renamed l’Alfas del Pi, referring to the iconic tree which already stood in the town’s main square. grade students of the CEIP Veles e Vents, planted a time capsule beneath the newly planted tree. The casket, made using wood from the previous pine, contained a daily newspaper from that day and a copy of the Municipal Declaration. Also placed in the capsule were 7 x euro Coins that symbolise each of the different pine trees which have graced the Plaza

Mayor since the first was planted in 1786. A piece of bark from the deceased tree, plus a pine cone were also added to represent the seventy years the tree had been a part of daily life for the Alfasinos. Accompanied by municipal mayor, Vicente Arques and councillor for culture Mayte Garcia, pupils, shovel in hand, laid the time capsule underneath the pine, only to be viewed when the time come around for the emblematic pine to be replaced.

LOCAL&LIFESTYLE Kids say no to harassment

Stopping bullying at an early age.

CHILDREN from Javea’s primary schools participated in the second Coexistence Seminar last week which aims to put a stop to harassment of all types at all levels. Around 500 youngsters from the eldest two years attended along with teachers, local police and a team from the town’s Social and Children’s Services. A talk was given on harassment at school, both violent and verbal, building on an anti-bullying programme that has been in

the schools for three years. On a different note there was also a demonstration by the town’s Canine Unit which searched for fake firearms hidden in the sports centre by volunteers earlier. The day ended with a special musical piece and finally the 500 students formed the slogan No to Harassment in Spanish with aerial photos taken by a drone.

THE “Message in a Bottle” project that is touring Javea’s schools arrived at the Graull last week after moving on from the Trenc d’Alba primary. Supported and organised by the Oceanografic Foundation it aims to raise awareness about the general environment and caring for the seas in particular. The students participate in the project over the course of a week, looking for environmentally sound

ideas and taking part in workshops. The focus is on recycling and reducing plastics in the sea, showing how pupils could do their bit by using reusable flasks instead of disposable bottles and paper napkins rather than plastic bags for their snack-time. The youngest children have also been learning about sea turtles and seahorses and the impact humans have on them.

Octogenarian expatriate death was probable suicide

THERE was an outpouring of grief and sympathy after an 84 year old British woman, a long term resident of Javea, jumped off a bridge in the town in what now appears to be a case of suicide. Witnesses, including staff at the “Weekender” office in the Marina Alta town,

saw several police cars and firemen race to the port at around 7.00 on Tuesday evening, followed quickly after by two ambulances. The Guardia Civil later confirmed that an 84 year old Briton had jumped off the bridge at Avenida de

Augusta and added that she had almost certainly intended to take her own life. She lived close to the spot where she died and had done so for several years, the spokesperson said. Local expatriates and Spaniards alike expressed their sadness on social media.

For more information about Colleen, please click here. “I believe all animals are sentient beings that deserve our love and compassion...even notso-cuddly animals like reptiles and rats. No animal should ever have to suffer, especially at the hand of humans. MILLIONS of unwanted animals perish every day, due to just that.... being “unwanted”. I’d like to ask animal lovers

Hepatitis C

(The Silent Epidemic) Hepatitis C is a bloodborne virus which affects the liver. It can cause inflammation, scarring and even cirrhosis of the liver. Liver cirrhosis can increase the risk of developing liver cancer and liver failure. The incubation period can be from 2 weeks to 6 months. The problem with having Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is that you will not necessarily know you have it. The symptoms can be vague and often common to all of us. Symptoms include tiredness, insomnia, depression, skin problems, abdominal pain and digestive problems. Approximately 20%30% of people who have contracted HCV will have symptoms. We know 20% of people with HCV will fight the virus and clear it within the first 6 months of contracting it. Unfortunately for the remaining 80%, it will become a chronic condition. Chronic HCV infection is often

Early, prompt diagnosis improves prognosis. HCV is treatable. Unfortunately, there is no vaccine to protect us against it (unlike Hepatitis B). Treatment can take from 6 months to a year. Different medications are used, some injectable and some orally. The medication encourages an immune response to fight the virus. An antiviral will also be used to stop the virus replicating. There are side effects, some people being affected and some not. Lifestyle changes have to be made and alcohol intake at least reduced, preferably stopped completely.

MIXED SALES PICTURE Spanish house sales rose by five per cent in February, compared to the same month a year earlier, according to official Land Registry figures, with a big rise in Murcia, but a drop in the Costa Blanca region. The property market has shown rises every February for the last five years, according to figures from the National Institute of Statistics (INE), based on statistics from the Land Registrars’ Association. But, the rate rise was was the second lowest since the property market regained traction after the recession, with a number of dramatic regional variations.

Huelva province in Andalucia showed a big hike of 56 per cent, whilst closer to home, the Murcia region, popular with British and foreign buyers, logged a 27 per cent rise in purchases. Valencia City showed a 13 per cent hike, with Barcelona up by 10 per cent. In contrast, the Costa Blanca area registered a 10 per cent fall in February, whilst down south, the Costa del Sol fell by three per cent. Figures from the Association of Notaries based on sales witnessed by them during February show sales up by three point two per cent and prices up by nought point seven per cent.

More luxury buyers LATEST figures show that luxury real estate sales to foreigners - classified as properties costing more than half a million euros - have increased by 40% in the Valencian Community. Although the region sells more houses to foreigners than anywhere else in the country, they have only a small share of the luxury market. These accounted for 2.18% of

total sales as opposed to the Balearic Islands where 20% of properties sold to non-Spaniards went for over €500,000. However despite not being a great player in the luxury sector, the Valencian Community still accounts for about a third of all sales made to foreigners.

Tracking power in the home ANALYSIS by energy experts Selectra has found that people in Murcia spend the most on electricity as a proportion of their income, 3.38%. Andalusian residents are just behind at 3.37% while those in Cantabria are the thriftiest at just 2.19%, although this is more to do with higher average incomes

than actual usage. Electra say that this highlights the issue of “power poverty” where the wealthy and the poor pay more or less the same amount but for those less well off it is a significant chunk of their earnings. The average annual household electric bill in Spain is now €800.74, according to Selectra’s latest figures.

Housing growth cap on the table THE UK’s Labour Party are considering controversial measures to cap house growth, something they talked about in more detail this week. Shadow Housing Secretary John Healey said that the Bank of England could be asked to control house prices the same way they now do with inflation. How they would go about that isn’t exactly clear, but restrictions on mortgage lending seem the most likely method. The proposals are a response to the rapid

by Simon Russell

growth in UK property prices over the last decade or so, effectively pricing first time buyers and those on lower wages out of the market. A recent think tank reported that the Bank of England should be set a target of zero house price growth for the next five years, allowing many peoples income to catch up with the sector. Obviously many who already own their home as well as free market advocates are likely to oppose the idea.

NEW SERIES:

Adventurer and naturalist Steve Backshall is on a mission to visit parts of the world yet to be explored. On this expedition, he is in the Arctic to kayak up the largest fjord in the world. It is a dangerous undertaking, only made possible because the sea ice has broken up early here following the warmest winter on record. It is a chance for Steve and his team of explorers to see what impact global warming could be having on this pristine wilderness. They face many threats, from perilous sea ice that could crush their boats to a terrifying encounter with a hungry polar bear.

You know, when you switch on Netflix, planning to watch something specific, but your eyes fall on the,‘Trending Now‘ bit at the bottom. Well that happened to me twice last week and I ended up sitting on the sofa well into the wee small hours binge watching both of the series from start to finish. The first is called, ‘Special’, written and starring memoirist Ryan O’Connell as a young gay man living with cerebral palsy, the show sees his character attempting to take the reins of his life, and dealing with the way he’s viewed by those around him.

Stars In Black Summer Special

FRIday 19TH aPRIL 2019

Now that might not sound much like a ‘must watch’, but I urge you to give it a go as it’s moving, hilarious, touching, naughty and even better, you can binge the whole thing in a couple of hours. At the extreme opposite is Black Summer, which takes Zombie series to such a new level, that you actually feel like you are in the middle of the flesh eating chaos. Again, I binge watched the lot, alternatively screaming and pulling the cushion in front of my face …… It’s like The Walking Dead on streroids. Watch it!

e g r a l t i g n i v i L ’s t o D For the ‘Snooze’ Ellie Goulding appears on the album

Having already admitted to being one of the few people alive that Game of Thrones has passed by, I’ve been greatly amused by the furore that last weekend’s opening episode of the 8th and final season generated across social media. From friends issuing spoiler alerts, threatening to unfriend anyone giving the plotlines away before they got a chance to watch it, to actor Kit Harrington, following mixed reviews from fans, telling critics they can, “go f**k themselves”, the media circus has been relentless. For us non GOT fans, justas we feel it may be safe to venture back onto social media, news

emerges that an album of ‘thrones’ inspired music is about to be released …..What? Featuring appearances by A$AP Rocky, Ellie Goulding, Joey Bada$$, Lil Peep, Muse’s Matthew Bellamy, Mumford & Sons, SZA, The Weeknd, Travis Scott, The National, and Ty Dollars $ign, the album, entitled ‘For the Throne’, is apparently out next week. With lyrics like, ‘I saw the footprints in the white of the snow. I counted thousands of hours just to ride all along. 18 degrees and 80 miles from home, oh no!’, I think we know where this album is going and even the thought of it is sending me straight to sleep …….Zzzzzzzz!

Madge and Beyare back

Music fans have been in a right old tizzy this week, with news that one iconic Grand Dame of the pop scene, is set to launch the first single off her forthcoming album, whilst the other is rumoured to be about to enter the recording studio to lay down some new material. Let’s start with Madonna, fresh from confirming a million dollar appearance at next month’s Eurovision Song Contest final in Tel Aviv, where she will sing 2 numbers during the voting section. She will perform one of her mega hits and the first single from her new album Madame X, on which the sixty plus chanteuse adopts yet another new alter ego. A generation apart, but no less successful and eccentric, Beyonce, last week premiered her Netflix documentary, Homecoming, chronicling her

acclaimed performance at last year’s Coachella Festival in the States, where she became the first black musician to headline the event. Just hours before the documentary appeared on Netflix, rumours of a new album release from the singer began circulating, after the lyric website, Genius listed a new album, titled B7, under Beyoncé’s discography. Initially, there were rumours that a live-album from her Coachella performance would be released, although this remains unconfirmed, but rumours now point to an entirely new release of studio recorded music, but this too, remains just speculation as no official announcement has been made. All very intriguing ….. these divas know just how to keep us on our tiptoes don’t they.

On the par four 5th, Jimmy Fletcher and Ruth Strassershot Nearest the Pins in two while Alan Webster and Gerian van Ooijen took the other Men and Women prizes on offer at hole 16. ALFAZ FANTASY FOOTBALL LEAGUE

There was one Monday Night game and 9 Premier League games at the weekend which gave the Alfaz Fantasy Football League a total of 29 goals, 7 clean sheets, 31 yellow cards and 1 red one which was Brighton’s Knockaert who was dismissed after a reckless tackle on Bournemouth’s Adam Smith. The battle at the top of the Premier League between Liverpool & Manchester City is matched by the top of 25th A.F.F.L. between Linda’s Team Tapas and John’s team Wee Aggies. At the moment Team Tapas have a very fragile 9 point advantage over Wee Aggies with only 5 weeks to go this Season’s Fantasy could be decided on the last game of the Season. the F.A.Cup Final between Watford & Manchester City. Third placed Andrew’s team Ballers had a poor week only scoring 11 points which has left them trailing the Leaders by 30 points. At the other end of the table, Gary’s team Upside Team have been rooted at the bottom since week 6 and are showing no signs of recovery as they are now

63 points adrift of Richard’s team Dunkrat. Linda’s Team Tapas are beginning to take a firm grip at the top of our Mark Carter Ladies Section. They have opened up a 48 point gap over Elaine’s team Barbra’s XI which could prove to be a bridge to far. Pauline’s Vodka Army are in third place follwed by Jin’s Dream Team. Down at the foot of the table two teams are standing shoulder to shoulder on level points. Kim’s Ginger United and Liz’s Cookies Crew are both only 8 points away from Sandra’s Brazilian Hooligans. In our Junior League William & Henry’s team have had their advantage at the top slashed to only 25 points by young Ollie’s team Olly F.C. Blue Moon F.C. remain in 3rd place while Harley’s team Ginger Ninjar have dropped out of the reckoning dropping to 4th. Fleetwood Gian have had a couple of good weeks but they still have mountain to climb if want to catch up to Bez Boden who are 45 points above them. Our Across the Costa’s Golden

After three Sundays when SAMM had to cancel the planned race day due to bad weather, racing was at last possible on April 14th and 7 boats and their eager crews came to the line for the first 1 hour race at 11am. The wind was SSW 3/4 knots but increased to 5 knots for the last 20 minutes. Five boats got away well but Shoestring Dos was 4 and Ginetta 7 minutes late crossing the line. There were no incidents and the race was unexciting to watch. The race format was “Average Lap” and, after handicaps were applied, Mistral with Robert Hudson and Ian Sinclair aboard, was declared the winner with an average lap time of 604.11 seconds. The wind had backed to SSE 4/5 knots for the second race start at 1pm and all boats got away within 1 minutes of the gun. There was a battle to the first mark and then the fleet started to spread out. There was some close racing as boats jostled for supremacy. The wind swung to SSW and increased to 7/8 knots after 25 minutes, then to 9/12 at 42 minutes. Some of the faster dinghies started to find this challenging but all

Boot League is shaping up nicely as we move into the final stages of the Season. Kevin’s Two for the Road are now coming under pressure from former leaders Bill’s East Fifers who are now only 9 points behind them. We have two Battlions in 3rd & 4th place, Kenny’s Albir Boro Army and Big Sam’s Army are both waiting for a slip up from the Two Leaders. There is a real battle at the bottom between Gary’s Upside Team & Leo’s Power Blueboys with only 2 points separating them. Dunkrat are not out of the relegation fight just 9 points above them. Pauline’s Vodka Army regained the top spot of our Champion of Champions League by taking a 12 point lead over Joe’s Keith Lard XI. At the opposite end of the Table Leo’s Power Blueboys are still chasing Dave’s team The Hatters. The gap a very small 8

boats finished without problems. The results were extremely close, showing just how well all crews performed. Mistral was again winner with an average lap time of 320.64 seconds. Second Ginetta in 350.02, third Shoestring Cuatro in 351.99, forth Shoestring Dos 352.62, fifth Sea Hopper 355.21, sixth RS Quba 360.29 and seventh Topaz Duo 377.97. Well done everybody! points. Bucko’s Log End United were this week;s highest scoring team with a tally of 60 points. Three of his Players hit double figures. Hazard(14), Pogba(12) and Burnley’s Chris Wood (12) were all amongst the goals last week. Two of our Ladies teams got the lowest score of only 5 points and they were Gil’s Kippax and Mrs Max & Paddy. All 3 teams will go into our Monthly Wine Draw. Manager of the Month for April is being kindly sponsored by Arlequin in Albir who do a fine selection of Pizza as well as other tasty dishes. With 2 weeks gone two teams a joint top, Steve’s team Flying Pigs XI and Craig’s Leeds-Leeds are both 10 points

RFU said in a statement. Vunipola said he had not intended to “cause suffering”, and that his intention was to “express my belief in the word of God.” Rugby Australia took swift action against Israel Folau by terminating his contract for a “high-level” breach of contact.

Anthony Joshua’s next opponent Jarrell Miller has returned an “adverse finding” in a drug-testing sample, says Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn. American Miller is due to fight the Brit at Madison Square Garden in New York on June 1st, with Joshua defending his IBF, WBA and WBO heavyweight titles against the undefeated Miller, who has never fought for a world title. Hearn said Joshua’s “preparations continue” for his US debut and said he had been informed by the the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (Vada) about the finding from a sample collected last month. ALEX RINS SUPREME

There was no shock in Texas last Sunday when there was Spanish success in the latest MotoGP contest, namely the Grand Prix of the Americas. The rabbit out of the hat though was the name of Alex Rins from Lleida in Catalunya claiming a surprise maiden MotoGP victory, as fellow-countryman and hot favourite, Marc Marquez

crashed out when he was in control of the race. Marquez, aiming for his seventh win in a row in Austin, was leading by almost four seconds when he lost control of his Honda on the ninth lap. The Spaniard was unable to continue and Rins edged out Valentino Rossi to win by 0.462 seconds.

Overall championship leader Andrea Dovizioso finished fourth. Italy’s Rossi is second in the standings, three points behind leader Dovizioso, and Rins is third with 49 points. “I beat Valentino, this is unbelievable for me. He was my idol when I was very young,” Rins, 23, said. The next race is the Spanish Grand Prix on Sunday May 5th at Jerez.

BIG PREMIER EASTER The Premier League fixture list has thrown up some two big clashes this weekend affecting the top and bottom, and none more dramatic than Sunday´s match in South Wales as Cardiff City welcome leaders Liverpool, or an instant Champions League reunion at the Etihad between Manchester City and Tottenham. against relegation, thanks to a Tuesday night win at Brighton, who appear to be falling apart, and go to Wolves on Saturday.. Neil Warnock´s side though have it all to do as they are still two points behind the Seagulls, with four matches remaining, plus they´ve played an extra game, which continues to be the same scenario for Klopp´s Liverpool in their

top-of-the-table scrap with Manchester City.. It´s tough stuff for City, with the quick Spurs rematch this Saturday lunchtime, and then that match in hand over Liverpool, which just happens to be a visit next Wednesday night to Old Trafford! Two wins for City would put them back in the driving seat, whilst there´s a battle royal for a Champions League slot, with just a point separating the London
