Saving Lives In The Storm A rescue helicopter was called in to assist members of the Benidorm Fire service, attending an injured hiker in Polop, at the height of a torrential rainstorm on Good Friday. The victim, a woman in her fifties, was walking with a group of fellow hikers from the Cantabrian region of Northern Spain, when she slipped, falling several metres into a ravine, on the outskirts of the Marina Baixa town. Following the accident, members of the group alerted rescue services, who despatched

by Andy Mansell

a fire tender from Benidorm Fire station. Hampered by the extreme weather conditions and the condition of the victim, who had a suspected broken leg, the five fire officers called in a rescue helicopter from the Alicante Consortium for assistance. Low cloud, heavy rain and fog, made the rescue operation more difficult than expected, however after approximately one hour and twenty minutes, the injured hiker was airlifted to

safety. She was subsequently transferred to a waiting ambulance, which took her to hospital, where she received treatment for a suspected broken tibia.

Diving disaster diverted SWIFT action by staff of a diving company and emergency personnel onshore helped saved the life of an elderly man who got into trouble while diving off Javea over Easter. The incident happened on Good Friday

SPAIN goes to the polls on Sunday in the General Election, with voters spoilt for choice in the Valencia region, as the regional government election will be held on the same day. Nationally, barring a shock result, the PSOE socialists, under current prime minister Pedro Sanchez, are set to be easily the largest single party in Madrid, according to opinion polls. The PSOE though will need to do a deal with the left-wing

by Alex Trelinski

Podemos party and a regional grouping, perhaps from the Basque region, to form a majority government. An opposition coalition of the Partido Popular, the far right Vox, and the centrist Ciudadanos party would still fall short of a majority, according to a survey published last weekend by the El Pais newspaper. A PSOE-Compromis-led coalition has been in charge of

the Valencia government since 2015 under PSOE president Ximo Puig, and polls suggest that the PSOE numbers will rise in the region, If the surveys are correct, the PSOE and Compromis will remain in power, with the Partido Popular set to suffer further losses in what would be their worst-ever regional result, whilst Vox could get up to six people elected for the first time, whilst Ciudadanos is also set to see an increase in representation.

Roman relics turn up in Spain

THREE valuable and historically important statues that were stolen in Rome have surfaced in Spain. One of them, a second century white marble depiction of a female worth €200,000 was stolen from the garden of a private residence belonging to well known Italian comedian Roberto Benigni, Another, a statue of Emperor Septimus Severus from the same era and worth around €45,000 was taken from a public park and was found on sale in a Barcelona antique shop. The third was also on sale in a Catalan antique shop, an 18th century work “Diana Cazadora” which by Simon Russell was stolen from the Rome’s Villa Borghese public park. dedicates itself to recovering A unit of Italy’s stolen historical property Carabinieri Corps that known informally as the Art

Child killed at parade

AN investigation has opened after an 11 year old boy was killed by a shotgun during the Easter parades in the town of Coin (Malaga). Apparently the child was play-

ing outside with his eight year old brother when the weapon was discharged at about 11.00 in the evening. The emergency ser-

vices received several calls from the public and were quickly in attendance but the boy was declared dead at the scene. The family and the victim are Portuguese nationals who were

staying with friends in the town. It is unclear how the children got hold of the shotgun and why youngsters of that age were allowed to be playing with a loaded weapon.

All my readers should consider attending one of these essential events

Every week Chorus publish articles to help Brits here in Spain navigate safely and securely through areas such as investing, retirement planning, pension transfers, succession planning, tax and legal matters. This week I felt my column inches would be even better served by telling you all about a very important series of seminars that are returning to our area on May8th, 9th and 10th, which cover all these important subjects. One of the most common pieces of feedback I’ve experienced over the years from thousands of expats here in Spain is that sometimes it’s hard to know

who to believe when it comes to vital information regarding your pensions, investments and tax planning. You can ask 3 people a question and you get 3 different answers, and often this means people are getting information on critical subjects from social media or a guy at the bar! The Finance Tour returns to Spain for the third year, bringing experts from FTSE listed UK institutions, to answer your questions directly. The seminars start with a short presentation from each company, followed by an open Q+A. At the end of the session, you can enjoy a

coffee whilst having the opportunity to speak one-on-one with the panel of experts. For those who already hold investments like ISAs, UK bonds/ platforms, QROPS/Spanish Investment Bonds, this gives you a great opportunity to ensure your product is appropriate and working for you in the best way. For those considering a new pension transfer or investment or trying to understand matters such as Wealth Tax or IHT here in Spain, this is an unprecedented opportunity to speak directly with the product providers before you go ahead

and seek independent advice. I appreciate there seems to be a different seminar, breakfast meeting or event nearly every week in Spain, but The Finance Tour is truly unique in that it gives you the chance to hear directly from a group of trusted companies who manage the pensions and investments of over 25 million customers worldwide. Look out for The Finance Tour’s adverts in page 6 of the Weekender or visitwww.thefinancetour.com for bookings and information. We really hope to see as many of you as possible at these essential events.

New twist in lotto attack case AN assault on a lottery ticket salesman that alarmed and worried residents in the small Marina Alta town of Pego has taken a dramatic turn after the police have charged the “victim” with faking the crime for personal gain. The initial incident was reported on 5 April when the vendor said they had been mugged on the

by Alex Trelinski

way to depositing €2,600 in the bank, the proceeds of ticket sales. A knife had been used and the person had some minor stomach wounds. The complainant gave a detailed account of the attacker, an accomplice and the car they used to flee. The Javea Guardia Civil

started an immediate investigation but it soon became clear there were holes in the individual’s account. When confronted with this, the 35 year old Spaniard confessed that the story had been a ruse and he had needed the cash to settle debts. He is being charged with simulating a crime and wasting police resources.

Mugged on the way to the bank

Minor arrested in sex blackmail case POLICE have released details of a case of blackmail that they think may not be an isolated incident due to the nature of the crime. The case occurred in Gandia after a man arranged a meeting with a woman he met through a dating app. When he arrived at the rendezvous address the young woman said her husband was present and the man would have to pay him €50 before they

by Alex Trelinski

had sex. He handed this over and started undressing but the alleged husband then entered the room, saying that the girl was under-age and if more cash was not handed over they would report him to the police. Photos were also taken of the victim in a state of undress and of the ID he was carrying.

The man was allowed to dress and then frogmarched to an ATM where he withdrew €110. When the group returned to the house the victim was told to leave and he later reported the incident. Police identified the girl as a 17 year old who had recently escaped from a juvenile detention centre while her 35 year old accomplice is already well known to them and has a

long criminal record. Both were arrested and charged with theft and threatening behaviour while police are also looking into whether the dogs they have - which they threatened the victim with - are dangerous breeds. They are also investigating whether the pair have carried out similar crimes but the victims have chosen not to come forward.

A MAN who was told to wait before an elderly family member could be seen at a Bilbao area hospital, took out his frustration by driving through the front door with his car, which he THEN parked up against the emergency area desk. The incident happened in the early hours of

Sunday morning at Basurto Hospital, when the 30-yearold, on being told that there would be a delay before his family member could be examined, drove his Seat Cordoba vehicle into the building, without anybody being hurt.

The emergency area entrance door was damaged, and the angry driver then assaulted an ambulance man, and when Bilbao police came to arrest him, he refused to take a breathalyser test. He has been charged with reckless driving and damage to public property.

MOCK EXECUTION ROW by Alex Trelinski

AN EFFIGY of Catalunya´s former president, Carles Puigdemont, was burnt and shot at in a town in the southern region of Andalucia, amidst controversy as the footage went viral. Coripe in Sevilla Province has an annual Easter Day fake execution of a figure meant to represent “what is negative for society”, which they call “setting Judas on fire.” This year, several men, including local police officers, shot at an effigy of Catalan separatist Puigdemont dozens of times, with the act being condemned by Spain´s foreign minister, Josep Borrell on Monday. The real Puigdemont is currently living abroad in self-exile after fleeing Spain following a failed secession bid in October 2017. The socialist mayor of Coripe, Antonio Perez, defended his town´s tradition:“We make a figure that represents evil.

What we’re killing is evil. That’s it,” he told reporters, before citing others who had been mock-executed in the past -- “politicians, bankers, Arabs...” Puigdemont, who is still wanted in Spain over his role in the secession bid, slammed the mock execution. He said they were making “mockery of the struggle for the freedom of political prisoners and exiles,” in reference to jailed or exiled separatist leaders like himself.”

MIXED BLESSINGS by Simon Russell

THE STORMS that hit Alicante Province over the Easter weekend brought good news for regional reservoirs. The biggest downpours recorded in April since 1946 have filled up reservoirs and left experts saying that there should be no water issues for local farmers for the rest of the year. The downside was that domestic tourism suffered a massive hit over Easter, with numbers of people travelling into the region from across Spain vastly reduced because of the weather and the scrapping of the traditional crowd-pulling processions. With the exception of the Benidorm area, hoteliers reported a large spate of lastminute cancellations.

Underwater Easter by Alex Trelinski

JAVEA found itself at the epicentre of the worst Easter weather to hit this part of Spain in most people’s living memory, with stories of people travelling there for a weekend by the beach ending up in emergency accommodation after being flooded out. Over 300 litres per square metre swamped the Marina Alta’s second town between Sunday and Easter Monday, trapping people inside cars and driving people out of properties. 89 people were housed in a temporary shelter said the Red Cross and 23 had to be rescued from badly flooded properties by the fire brigade.

Flooding On Easter Sunday

In other parts of the region Saturday had seen the worst of the weather with firefighters being called out more than 180 times across Alicante province. Tree falls, cut off roads, falling walls, overflowing sewage and trapped vehicles were the most common problems. Several vehicles fell into ditches as conditions became virtually impossible to drive in and the Vega Baja was particularly badly hit. Remarkably there were no reports of any serious injuries in what will certainly go down as a memorable Easter break for many, although unfortunately not for the right reasons.

SCAM CALL WARNING

SPAIN´S consumer association, FACUA, has warned people not to answer phone calls with one of five country prefixes, since they could end up with a huge bill. Those who know someone in any of the countries listed and normally speak to them by phone should check the number on their screen before picking up, and ignore it if they do not recognise it. FACUA has had numerous reports of calls from numbers with the country codes 225 (Côte

d’Ivoire, formerly the Ivory Coast), 233 (Ghana), 234 (Nigeria), 355 (Albania), and 387 (Bosnia), who end up getting charged just for answering. Where a mobile or landline customer does fall victim to one of these additional-tariff number scams, FACUA says, they should notify their operator in writing to advise them and request an itemised bill which breaks down the cost of the rogue call, and the customer can opt not to pay that portion of the bill.

LOVE TRIANGLE BRITS RELEASED ON BAIL European arrest warrant issued for 26-year-old Irishman, Simon Fahy TWO BRITISH women arrested in February after a man’s body was found close to the AP-7 highway near Rojales, have been granted bail after spending over two months in jail. The love-triangle killing saw model Mily Leonard and bar manager Natalie Edwards remanded into custody after the Guardia Civil found Irish national Carl Carr buried in a shallow grave in January, after he died in a Torrevieja apartment in September The Guardia believe Carr was killed the same day after a night out, before his body was dumped off the AP-7 and buried alongside bleach used in a clean-up operation to hide the crime. The two women were remanded in custody on suspicion of concealment after appearing before a Torrevieja judge at the start

A third woman, an unnamed British national, was arrested on suspicion of making a false statement and remains under investigation, but was not jailed. Carr is believed to have been battered to death with a knuckleduster by house mate Wayne Walsh, after he had a relationship with Walsh´s ex-girlfriend, Mily Leonard, whilst Natalie Edwards was said to be Walsh´s current girlfriend Walsh remains in custody, along with a Spaniard, whilst a European arrest warrant was issued for a 26-year-old Irishman, Simon Fahy, who is accused of covering up the crime, but has disappeared after initially taunting authorities on social media.

New Faro signs unveiled Woman laid dead

for five years QUESTIONS are once again being asked about the changing face of Spanish society after the mummified corpse of an elderly woman was found in her home an estimated five years after she died. Her body was found in the affluent Salamanca district of Madrid when authorities had been alerted after a niece, who lives in Israel, was unable to contact her aunt. The National Police went to the property and saw her body lying on the kitchen floor through a window. An autopsy confirmed the likely timeline of her death and that she

by Simon Russell

probably died from natural causes. Her only family were several nieces and nephews who all lived abroad and neighbours had assumed that she had joined them after not being seen for a while. An increasing amount of elderly Spanish are living alone and many have no family or have lost touch with them. This also sadly means that many are dying alone and sometimes it is several days before people are aware although five years is an extreme case.

Visitors to one of the region’s top tourist sites will have new a series of updated signs providing detailed information on the natural features of the area. The thirteen signs are placed in strategic positions along the five kilometre path, leading to the Faro de Albir, a popular route providing spectacular vistas of the coast and inland mountain ranges. Alfas boy dies on school holiday The Marina Baixa town of L’Alfasd’El Pi was sent into mourning last week following the death of one of its young sportsmen. The teenager, David Arques, 14, was on an end of term holiday with fellow students, in the Andalucian city of Granada, when he was involved in a tragic accident at the hotel the group were staying at. For unknown reasons the young athlete fell down a flight of stairs and died as a result of injuries he received in the incident. David, was a promising basketball player, having been a member of the CB TerraAlfas club, where his father is coach and president, since he was a child, performing for both the cadet and junior teams. His family are well known in L’Alfasd’El Pi, as they are related to the current mayor of the municipality, Vicente Arques. In the wake of the tragedy, the Valencian Basketball Federation immediately issued a statement through its website, which said, “David Arques has been a

David forever.” Four teams from the basketball club, had been due to attend a tournament in Italy in the week following the teenager’s death, but cancelled the trip so that they could attend his funeral.

Drivers beware by Alex Trelinski

PLANNED new motoring regulations in Valencia City will have the effect of favouring both greener forms of transport and people on foot while bringing in extra regulations for drivers. Two thirds of the cities streets will have a 30kmph limit as all single lane roads will have that as a maximum speed. Disabled drivers will be able to use the dedicated bus-taxi lanes and the issue of loading and unloading is also being looked at. Concerning push-bikes and motorbikes there will be no circumstances where they can use pavements while electric scooters have a maximum speed of 10kmph in pedestrian areas and 15 kmph on bicycle lanes, rising to 20kmph on certain lanes. Last but not least, using your push-bike with a dog tethered to it is also now prohibited. All the new measures, 55 in total, were approved at a plenary session last week and are expected to gain final sign off at the end of the month before coming into force.

Polop helicopter rescue A rescue helicopter was called in to assist members of the Benidorm Fire service, attending an injured hiker in Polop, at the height of a torrential rainstorm on Good Friday. The victim, a woman in her fifties, was walking with a group of fellow hikers from the Cantabrian region of Northern Spain, when she slipped, falling several metres into a ravine, on the outskirts of the Marina Baixa town. Following the accident, members of the group alerted rescue services, who despatched a fire tender from Benidorm Fire station. Hampered by the extreme weather conditions and the condition of the victim, who had a suspected broken leg, the five

Nazi row for local candidate

A council candidate for the Partido Popular in Pedreguer has removed a photo of himself on social media giving a Nazi salute. Sergio Fernandez is the number 4 selection for the right-wing party and has expressed support in the past for extreme rightwing groups such as Hogar Social and Spain 2000. The PP in the Marina Alta town currently has three

British duke buying up over here NAMED as the richest person in the world under the age of 30, the Duke of Westminster is expanding his already substantial property portfolio by purchasing some prime real estate here in Spain. Hugh Grosvenor, who inherited the title after the death of his father in 2016, is buying large chunks of property in the exclusive Chamberi neighbourhood in Madrid. These include the prestigous Arrando building where apartments sell for up to 1.6 million euros and which he has added to his extensive investments in the Spanish luxury market, a country he

has known since childhood. The duke is preparing to invest up to 300 million euros in Spain according to sources although he keeps his finances almost as secret as his private life. The 26 year old duke owns an estimated 0.22% of all properties in the UK (including “about half” of London) and has an estimated personal wealth of around €10 billion. The true figure is probably much higher as Grosvenor Europe, which he heads, manages a portfolio of assets estimated to be worth 2.7 trillion euros.

Stay safe when hiking

A L I C A N T E ’ S Provincial Fire Consortium has produced 10,000 leaflets and put together a video to remind hikers and climbers in the area of the best practice they should be following to avoid getting into trouble or injuring themselves. The leaflets have six main sections preparation before starting out, navigating your way to your destination, actions to take in the event of an accident, activities which the Consortium can help you with, environmental awareness and finally more detail on what the Fire Consortium does. These will be distributed to the regions natural parks as well as hotels, tourist

The video will be made available to local schools and on social media networks. Chief Operating Officer Pepe Cerda has said that the Rescue Group have already carried out 29 rescue missions so far this year with the main hiking season only now getting underway. He stresses that although his team will always be there for people who get into trouble, prevention is preferable to intervention.

Business & Finance Jumbo bill for giant of the skies

The giant plane dwarves vehicles on the runway.

A Russian Antonov, one of the world’s largest cargo planes, has been parked at Alicante airport since the end of March, something the airport is charging over a thousand euros a day for the privilege of. The plane, from the Ivory Coast, landed on 28 March without cargo and has not yet set a departure

date. “Parking fees” are calculated on the weight of the craft and duration of the stopover, meaning that the owners have clocked up a bill of over €20,000 to date. Apparently the plane is awaiting instructions for loading and is then capable of flying anywhere in the world. The Antonov has a capacity of 150 tons and can

also carry 88 passengers but to give an idea of the size of the cargo an Antonov was used to transport yachts for the Volvo World Tour and can also carry helicopters. This is only the second time an aircraft of this size has been at Alicante-Elche airport although the last visitor, another Antonov, only stayed for a few hours.

TORONTO by Yvonne Hollywood, Worldwide Horizons The city of Toronto is the largest in the state of Ontario, with almost 3 million inhabitants, which is made up of diverse ethnic groups who, in the main speak in English however actually over 160 languages are spoken here.

It is a thriving city for the arts, theatre and music crowds and easily gives its neighbour, New York a run for its money in producing Broadway shows. It is also a city of

legendary sights, including the CN Tower, the largest freestanding for 32 years (beaten by the Burj Khalif in 2007). A trip to this tower is not for the fainthearted, given its glass floor. For those not put off by dizzying heights or see-through floors, the revolving restaurant at the top of the tower offers spectacular views over the city, especially as the sun goes down. For sports fans, a visit to the watch the Toronto Maple Leafs is a must. Getting tickets for the games is quite easy. Matches are usually held in the evening, and with numerous bars and restaurants in the area all dedicated to the theme, it’s a full evening out. For foodies, make sure you visit the Saint Laurence area – there are actual tours dedicated to taking you around this which ensure that not only do you eat at the best places, you also get a running history of the local area too.

As always, the hop on-hop off will give you best value for money in guiding you to all the most interesting places to see as well as being a ‘taxi’ for getting you back home (the stop closest to your hotel) when yoú ve exhausted yourself. Shopping is plentiful in Toronto, make sure you leave plenty of space in your case when you arrive, as, similar to New York, the streets are filled with small boutiques offering all new fashions and at very reasonable prices. If you are a keen walker, try walking a length of Yonge Street, the longest street in the world. The full 56 kilometres though, might be asking a little too much! As a major city, as you would expect, there are exhibitions and festivals being held throughout the year, so always check what is going on locally. If the weather is inclement, it s not really ´ a big deal in Toronto – many of their shopping malls connect underground and are fully heated – to be expected in a city whose winter temperature can drop to -7 degrees (and that s not ´ taking into account the wind-chill factor!). Although yes, it may be cold, it is definitely worth visiting Toronto preChristmas – the city is lit up as each mall tries to outdo the next in a fantastic

display of lights. Having made your way to Toronto, you simply cań t leave without making the quintessential trip to Niagara. Offered by many travel agents and tour operators in Toronto, this can either be a day tour (takes about 10 hours) or you can opt to stay at one of the hotels at the falls. No matter what time of year you visit, the falls are spectacular in real life. Visit the caves underneath them and walk to (almost) the edge or take a trip on the famous “Maid of the Mist” and yoù ll really get a feel for the power of these three horse-shaped falls. For those that prefer a calmer experience, take the ferry out to the Toronto Islands. Centreville Park is an amusement park for younger kids, or visit the petting zoo on Center Island. This is also a popular picnic area and a great swimming area for smaller kids, given the calm and shallow waters. Toronto also excels in cutting edge technology, so doń t miss out on a visit to the Science Museum, innovative in offering effects and interactive fun for all the family. Toronto is a well-connected city offering accommodation in all budgets. If you are planning to travel, doń t forget the new(ish) requisite of a valid Visa for visiting.

DNA is a fantastic analysis, which of fic scienti of piece course was sussed out by boffins from Leicester University. It´s not all about tracking down criminals, but can be used for important historical discoveries, like finding out that the ancestors of the people who built Stonehenge travelled west across the Mediterranean from where you would find modern day Turkey, before reaching Britain. Researchers in London compared DNA extracted from Neolithic human

remains found in Britain with that of people alive at the same time in Europe. The Neolithic inhabitants appear to have travelled from Anatolia (modern Turkey) to Iberia before winding their way north, and got to Britain around 4,000BC. The migration to Britain was just one part of a general, massive expansion of people out of Anatolia in 6,000BC that introduced farming to Europe, after travelling across the Mediterranean.

DNA reveals that Neolithic Britons were largely descended from groups who took the Mediterranean route, either hugging the coast or hopping from island-to-island on boats before getting to good old Britain. When the researchers analysed the DNA of early British farmers, they found they most closely resembled Neolithic people from Iberia (modern Spain and Portugal). These Iberian farmers were descended from people who had journeyed across the Mediterranean.

unlikely killer.

FRANCE’S President Macron has made a pledge to reconstruct the severely fire damaged Notre-Dame Cathedral, 48 hours after the blaze that threatened to completely destroy one of the world’s most iconic landmarks. The ambitious target means that, if achieved, it will be rebuilt in time for 2024 when Paris hosts the Summer Olympics and the eyes of the world will be on the city. Standing in front of the charred cathedral Mr Macron said “We’ll rebuild Notre-Dame even more beautifully and I want it to be completed in five years, we can do it”. Nonetheless experts in the field doubted the reality of the five year plan. Eric Fischer, who is heading up the restoration of the 1,000 year old Strasbourg Cathedral, said the project could take decades while Frederic Letoffe, who leads the Restoration of Historic Monuments Association, said 10 to 15 years was a more realistic

by Simon Russell

time-scale. After starting on Monday evening the fire soon took hold and it was 15 hours before it was extinguished, destroying most of the wooden roof and, most famously, it’s spire which is no longer dominating the local skyline. However it is still too early to gauge the full extent of the damage, leading many to query President Macron’s promises while not armed with the full facts. The focus has now turned to the cause of the blaze with “theories” (or conspiracy theories) running from Islamic terrorists - something there is no evidence to support - to a spark from the renovation works that were taking place before the fire started. All current evidence points to it being an accident, albeit it one that has struck at the heart of many French men and women, Parisians in particular.

BIRDS kill a handful of people each year, usually after collisions with cars or aeroplanes while avian flu threatened to develop into an epidemic after crossing over to humans. However the sub-category of the bird deaths mortality tables (if there is such a thing, and there probably is) of people killed by actual bird attacks is so small as to be virtually unmeasurable. It now seems that the actuaries or whoever measures these things may have to dust off their records, as this week a 75 year old Florida man was killed

by his pet cassowary, an ostrich type creature dubbed The Worlds Most Dangerous Bird (my capitals). The victim, named as Marvin Hajos, was found in his pet’s enclosure in a pool of blood with deep lacerations caused by the creature. He was still alive but sadly died later in hospital from his wounds. It is believed that the unfortunate Mr Hajos tripped when feeding the cassowary which then attacked him, feeling threatened. They weigh up to 60 kilos and grow to about six feet tall and a spokesman for

a local zoo said that they “can slice any predator open with their talons or even kill them with a well aimed kick”. Despite the somewhat worrying threat of disembowelment or being kicked to death, the only other confirmed cassowary killing was almost a century ago in their native Australia that of a small boy who was teasing one. This case highlights the fact that whatever you think of the good people of America, they are certainly adept at coming up with original ways to shuffle off this mortal coil.

Masterchefs in Concerts at the cave Denia by Simon Russell

THE celebrity judges from the Spanish version of “Masterchef” have been filming in Denia, one of the culinary capitals of this part of Spain. Jordi Cruz, Samantha Nagera and Pepe Rodriguez were spotted at the Blay Beach Restaurant and later on dining at Peix i Brases with three Michelin starred local chef Quique Dacosta, a regular on the programme. Both judges

and chefs from the hugely popular programme attracted a lot of attention and seemed happy to pose for numerous selfies which doubtless will be on social media by now. Although they didn’t disclose the official reason for their visit, it is assumed they were filming for the new series which will be broadcast on national broadcaster La1 later this year.

As early booking is always recommended for this popular event, the Costa Blanca Male Voice Choir have given people plenty of notice for their 14 and 15 June concerts at the Cueva de las Calaveras in Benidoleig. Marketing and Publicity Officer Vernon Pearce said “We are very excited about experiencing the acoustics of the cave again and we’ll be performing a programme of songs, both old and new, and featuring some interesting new guest artists this year. We are responding to the huge demand for tickets last year with a new online booking system and hope that this time we will be able to accommodate everyone who was disappointed” You can view the new booking system at www. costablancamalevoicechoir. com Tickets are priced at €12.50 with part of the proceeds going to local charities. In the 6 to 12 year old age group, who the programme is aimed at, this can damage eyes that are still in the development stage. The campaign runs until 25 May and will test children’s eyes and also give them professional advice on preventing eye damage. New pine tree for town square in Alfaz del Pi

An emblematic symbol, representing 183 years of history in a Marina Baixa town received its official blessing last Sunday. The latest in a long line of pine trees, which have stood in the Plaza Mayor, at the historic centre of L’Alfas del Pi, was unveiled to coincide with Palm Sunday at a ceremony led by Pastor, Miguel Angel Schiller. planted in 1786, when the small settlement was a dependency of nearby Polop. Owing to constrictions caused by the paving of the square, the trees, only lasted between sixty and seventy years, before drying up and dying. This new tree is the seventh in line, replacing the previous pine,

which was planted in 1949. The pine tree has an important symbolic meaning for the municipality, since it was granted independence from the Barony of Polop on April 16, 1836 and renamed l’Alfas del Pi, referring to the iconic tree which already stood in the town’s main square. The casket, made using wood from the previous pine, contained a daily newspaper from that day and a copy of the Municipal Declaration. Also placed in the capsule were 7 x euro Coins that symbolise each of the different pine trees which have graced the Plaza

Mayor since the first was planted in 1786. A piece of bark from the deceased tree, plus a pine cone were also added to represent the seventy years the tree had been a part of daily life for the Alfasinos. Accompanied by municipal mayor, Vicente Arques and councillor for culture Mayte Garcia, pupils, shovel in hand, laid the time capsule underneath the pine, only to be viewed when the time come around for the emblematic pine to be replaced.

Stopping bullying at an early age.

CHILDREN from Javea’s primary schools participated in the second Coexistence Seminar last week which aims to put a stop to harassment of all types at all levels. Around 500 youngsters from the eldest two years attended along with teachers, local police and a team from the town’s Social and Children’s Services. A talk was given on harassment at school, both violent and verbal, building on an anti-bullying programme that has been in

the schools for three years. On a different note there was also a demonstration by the town’s Canine Unit which searched for fake firearms hidden in the sports centre by volunteers earlier. The day ended with a special musical piece and finally the 500 students formed the slogan No to Harassment in Spanish with aerial photos taken by a drone.

THE “Message in a Bottle” project that is touring Javea’s schools arrived at the Graull last week after moving on from the Trenc d’Alba primary. Supported and organised by the Oceanografic Foundation it aims to raise awareness about the general environment and caring for the seas in particular. The students participate in the project over the course of a week, looking for environmentally sound

ideas and taking part in workshops. The focus is on recycling and reducing plastics in the sea, showing how pupils could do their bit by using reusable flasks instead of disposable bottles and paper napkins rather than plastic bags for their snack-time. The youngest children have also been learning about sea turtles and seahorses and the impact humans have on them.

Octogenarian expatriate death was probable suicide

THERE was an outpouring of grief and sympathy after an 84 year old British woman, a long term resident of Javea, jumped off a bridge in the town in what now appears to be a case of suicide. Witnesses, including staff at the “Weekender” office in the Marina Alta town,

saw several police cars and firemen race to the port at around 7.00 on Tuesday evening, followed quickly after by two ambulances. The Guardia Civil later confirmed that an 84 year old Briton had jumped off the bridge at Avenida de

own shopping bags. This was very well supported by the all those who had arrived to enjoy the dayand support their heritage. Around 800 tickets were sold and so many stopped at the Legion table to donate that the branch members manning the table remarked that it

proves the efficacy of supporting these local fairs and events in the Community. The photo shows Sam, Pam, Trevor and Pat of the branch with Sue and Nick Rush, Steve and Rachel the organisers of the event and two visiting Crusaders. The dress codefor the day was red and white and this was observed by all.

How to Throw Your Dog or Cat a Birthday Party

Safety First Remember, party time is not the best time to introduce unfamiliar pets to your own. Try to make your pet guest list consist of those with whom your pet is familiar. Also, consider your party location and remember to invite only as many pets and people that can realistically and comfortably co-exist. Inviting small children can be an additional concern— if you’re going to do it, make sure they know how to handle pets gently and won’t be frightened by a group of them. If you are inviting pet guests who aren’t spayed and neutered, let other party guests know. If you’re hosting an outdoor party for dogs, bring waste bags and remind guests to leave the location in the same condition that it was in prior to the party. Wherever you choose to have the party, make sure that it is safely enclosed and that four-legged guests can’t slip through any cracks! And, have a

contingency plan in the event of bad weather. Lastly, make sure you always have first aid items on hand as well as easy access to veterinarian phone numbers and locations, complete with driving directions. Be prepared! The Guest List A birthday or adopt-aversary is no fun unless it’s shared by friends. Invite all your kitties for a day of early play, a belly full of treats and then, what else? A cat nap of course! You can create a special space in your house just for napping, but remember, it’s kitty’s special day, so let her sleep wherever she may. If your dog is familiar with and favors certain dogs from your neighborhood or from the dog park, consider getting them all together for a day of fun. A park where pet owners can mingle and dogs can explore on leash is the perfect environment for such activities. Don’t forget to bring along your

treats and share them with the bunch! The size of your pet’s party is completely up to you, but consider your pet’s demeanor when compiling a guest list. Is your pet very social? Or does she prefer quiet time to herself? Answering these questions will help you choose whether to invite only immediate family or every pooch from the dog park! Invitations Now it’s time to let the world—or, your party guests at least—know about your pet’s birthday party! Simple hand-written notes on pet-themed invitations will do the trick. Or, take advantage of electronic invites to alert your guests about the festivities.

Hepatitis C

(The Silent Epidemic) Hepatitis C is a bloodborne virus which affects the liver. It can cause inflammation, scarring and even cirrhosis of the liver. Liver cirrhosis can increase the risk of developing liver cancer and liver failure. The incubation period can be from 2 weeks to 6 months. The problem with having Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is that you will not necessarily know you have it. The symptoms can be vague and often common to all of us. Symptoms include tiredness, insomnia, depression, skin problems, abdominal pain and digestive problems. Approximately 20%30% of people who have contracted HCV will have symptoms. We know 20% of people with HCV will fight the virus and clear it within the first 6 months of contracting it. Unfortunately for the remaining 80%, it will become a chronic condition. Chronic HCV infection is often

Early, prompt diagnosis improves prognosis. HCV is treatable. Unfortunately, there is no vaccine to protect us against it (unlike Hepatitis B). Treatment can take from 6 months to a year. Different medications are used, some injectable and some orally. The medication encourages an immune response to fight the virus. An antiviral will also be used to stop the virus replicating. There are side effects, some people being affected and some not. Lifestyle changes have to be made and alcohol intake at least reduced, preferably stopped completely.

MIXED SALES PICTURE Spanish house sales rose by five per cent in February, compared to the same month a year earlier, according to official Land Registry figures, with a big rise in Murcia, but a drop in the Costa Blanca region. The property market has shown rises every February for the last five years, according to figures from the National Institute of Statistics (INE), based on statistics from the Land Registrars’ Association. But, the rate rise was was the second lowest since the property market regained traction after the recession, with a number of dramatic regional variations.

Huelva province in Andalucia showed a big hike of 56 per cent, whilst closer to home, the Murcia region, popular with British and foreign buyers, logged a 27 per cent rise in purchases. Valencia City showed a 13 per cent hike, with Barcelona up by 10 per cent. In contrast, the Costa Blanca area registered a 10 per cent fall in February, whilst down south, the Costa del Sol fell by three per cent. Figures from the Association of Notaries based on sales witnessed by them during February show sales up by three point two per cent and prices up by nought point seven per cent.

More luxury buyers LATEST figures show that luxury real estate sales to foreigners - classified as properties costing more than half a million euros - have increased by 40% in the Valencian Community. Although the region sells more houses to foreigners than anywhere else in the country, they have only a small share of the luxury market. These accounted for 2.18% of

by Simon Russell

total sales as opposed to the Balearic Islands where 20% of properties sold to non-Spaniards went for over €500,000. However despite not being a great player in the luxury sector, the Valencian Community still accounts for about a third of all sales made to foreigners.

Tracking power in the home ANALYSIS by energy experts Selectra has found that people in Murcia spend the most on electricity as a proportion of their income, 3.38%. Andalusian residents are just behind at 3.37% while those in Cantabria are the thriftiest at just 2.19%, although this is more to do with higher average incomes

than actual usage. Electra say that this highlights the issue of “power poverty” where the wealthy and the poor pay more or less the same amount but for those less well off it is a significant chunk of their earnings. The average annual household electric bill in Spain is now €800.74, according to Selectra’s latest figures.

Housing growth cap on the table THE UK’s Labour Party are considering controversial measures to cap house growth, something they talked about in more detail this week. Shadow Housing Secretary John Healey said that the Bank of England could be asked to control house prices the same way they now do with inflation. How they would go about that isn’t exactly clear, but restrictions on mortgage lending seem the most likely method. The proposals are a response to the rapid

by Simon Russell

growth in UK property prices over the last decade or so, effectively pricing first time buyers and those on lower wages out of the market. A recent think tank reported that the Bank of England should be set a target of zero house price growth for the next five years, allowing many peoples income to catch up with the sector. Obviously many who already own their home as well as free market advocates are likely to oppose the idea.

John Healey, Shadow Housing Secretary

A blackand-white crossword-style grid is set up for each quote, with a number of letters “hovering” above each column. Your task is to “drop” each of those letters into the appropriate square in each column, until the entire quote is revealed. All punctuation (commas, periods, dashes, etc.) has been removed. You know, when you switch on Netflix, planning to watch something specific, but your eyes fall on the,‘Trending Now‘ bit at the bottom. Well that happened to me twice last week and I ended up sitting on the sofa well into the wee small hours binge watching both of the series from start to finish. The first is called, ‘Special’, written and starring memoirist Ryan O’Connell as a young gay man living with cerebral palsy, the show sees his character attempting to take the reins of his life, and dealing with the way he’s viewed by those around him.

Stars In Black Summer Special

FRIday 26TH aPRIL 2019

Now that might not sound much like a ‘must watch’, but I urge you to give it a go as it’s moving, hilarious, touching, naughty and even better, you can binge the whole thing in a couple of hours. At the extreme opposite is Black Summer, which takes Zombie series to such a new level, that you actually feel like you are in the middle of the flesh eating chaos. Again, I binge watched the lot, alternatively screaming and pulling the cushion in front of my face …… It’s like The Walking Dead on streroids. Watch it!

Black Summer ……watch it!

e g r a l t i g n i v i L ’s t o D For the ‘Snooze’ Ellie Goulding appears on the album

Having already admitted to being one of the few people alive that Game of Thrones has passed by, I’ve been greatly amused by the furore that last weekend’s opening episode of the 8th and final season generated across social media. From friends issuing spoiler alerts, threatening to unfriend anyone giving the plotlines away before they got a chance to watch it, to actor Kit Harrington, following mixed reviews from fans, telling critics they can, “go f**k themselves”, the media circus has been relentless. For us non GOT fans, justas we feel it may be safe to venture back onto social media, news

emerges that an album of ‘thrones’ inspired music is about to be released …..What? Featuring appearances by A$AP Rocky, Ellie Goulding, Joey Bada$$, Lil Peep, Muse’s Matthew Bellamy, Mumford & Sons, SZA, The Weeknd, Travis Scott, The National, and Ty Dollars $ign, the album, entitled ‘For the Throne’, is apparently out next week. With lyrics like, ‘I saw the footprints in the white of the snow. I counted thousands of hours just to ride all along. 18 degrees and 80 miles from home, oh no!’, I think we know where this album is going and even the thought of it is sending me straight to sleep …….Zzzzzzzz!

Madge and Beyare back

Music fans have been in a right old tizzy this week, with news that one iconic Grand Dame of the pop scene, is set to launch the first single off her forthcoming album, whilst the other is rumoured to be about to enter the recording studio to lay down some new material. Let’s start with Madonna, fresh from confirming a million dollar appearance at next month’s Eurovision Song Contest final in Tel Aviv, where she will sing 2 numbers during the voting section. She will perform one of her mega hits and the first single from her new album Madame X, on which the sixty plus chanteuse adopts yet another new alter ego. A generation apart, but no less successful and eccentric, Beyonce, last week premiered her Netflix documentary, Homecoming, chronicling her

acclaimed performance at last year’s Coachella Festival in the States, where she became the first black musician to headline the event. Just hours before the documentary appeared on Netflix, rumours of a new album release from the singer began circulating, after the lyric website, Genius listed a new album, titled B7, under Beyoncé’s discography. Initially, there were rumours that a live-album from her Coachella performance would be released, although this remains unconfirmed, but rumours now point to an entirely new release of studio recorded music, but this too, remains just speculation as no official announcement has been made. All very intriguing ….. these divas know just how to keep us on our tiptoes don’t they.

Sports & Local News Montgo Golf Society Report Was it luck or the shot of the day? With his last effort of the round 21 handicapper John Feek got five points for it, during the Montgo Golf Society Stableford at Oliva Nova held on 12th April. From 108 metres John recorded a well-aimed “Eagle” on the par four 18thhole. It also turned out to be the only two recorded. On the par four 5th, Jimmy Fletcher and Ruth Strassershot Nearest the Pins in two while Alan Webster and Gerian van Ooijen took the other Men and Women prizes on offer at hole 16. Patrick Lynch, the sponsor for the main

competition and other honours, presented the winning prize for a very consistent 40 point performance from Russ Peters(17). Gerian struck again but two shots adrift. Nevertheless she outshone37pointers from John Feek (his last hole score coming in handy) and Ruth Strasser. Visiting players with the Society were Peter-Gill Williams and Martin-Pamela Cooke, the latter taking the best guest award with a commendable 35 point card. Next week’s fixture is a “ Magic Three “ sponsored by Celia Cronin.

ALFAZ FANTASY FOOTBALL LEAGUE

There was 2 Mid-Week games and 9 Premier League games at the weekend which produced for the Alfaz Fantasy Football League 27 goals, 8 clean sheets, 27 yellow cards and 1 red one which was Watford’s out spoken Captain Troy Deeney who was dismissed by Referee Craig Pawson in the Monday Night game between Watford and Arsenal which gave the Gunners a 1-0 win thanks to a bad mistake by the normally reliable Ben Foster. The other Mid-Week game saw Cardiff extend their stay in the Premier League for at least another week after recording a fine 2-0 victory at Brighton. John’s team Wee Aggies regained the top spot of the A.F.F.L.when they took a narrow 7 point lead over Linda’s Team Tapas. Andrew’s Ballers & Elaine’s Barbra’s XI are both still in with a chance of winning the 25 th A.F.F.L. in 3rd & 4th place. This was the ninth time the Summit has changed hands this Season and with only 4 weeks remaining the Fantasy League is up for grabs. Not so at the other end where Gary’s

Upside Team cemented the bottom spot ages ago. William & Henry ‘s team have pushed on at the top of our Junior League and look a good bet to win this section as they have moved 36 points clear of Blue Moon F.C. Young Ollie’s team, Olly F.C. have slipped down to 3rd. Down at the foot of the Table Fleetwood Gian have fallen by the wayside and are now trailing Bez Boden by 43 points. There is no change at the top of our Mark Carter Ladies Section with Linda’s Team Tapas leading Barbra’s XI by 37 points. Pauline’s Vodka Army are still marching along in 3rd place. Two teams from this section are going into our Monthly Wine Draw and they are Kim’s Ginger United who are bottom of this League got this weeks lowest score of 2 points, the other team who top scored this week is Dawn’s team Big Bad Boys who waded in with a tally of 69 points courtesy of her 5 Defenders who all kept clean sheets. There was not many goals this weekend in the Premier League

After three Sundays when SAMM had to cancel the planned race day due to bad weather, racing was at last possible on April 14th and 7 boats and their eager crews came to the line for the first 1 hour race at 11am. The wind was SSW 3/4 knots but increased to 5 knots for the last 20 minutes. Five boats got away well but Shoestring Dos was 4 and Ginetta 7 minutes late crossing the line. There were no incidents and the race was unexciting to watch. The race format was “Average Lap” and, after handicaps were applied, Mistral with Robert Hudson and Ian Sinclair aboard, was declared the winner with an average lap time of 604.11 seconds. The wind had backed to SSE 4/5 knots for the second race start at 1pm and all boats got away within 1 minutes of the gun. There was a battle to the first mark and then the fleet started to spread out. There was some close racing as boats jostled for supremacy. The wind swung to SSW and increased to 7/8 knots after 25 minutes, then to 9/12 at 42 minutes. Some of the faster dinghies started to find this challenging but all

which meant a low scoring week in our Across the Costa’s Golden Boot League. The 2 front-runners at the top, Two for the Road & East Fifers failed to pick up any points which enabled Kenny’s Albir Boro Army Utd, Big Sam’s Army and Nick’s Black Cats to make up ground. Top scoring team in this League was Grahem’s LLoris & Gromit who bagged 27 points which helped them move into 6th place. Cardiff’s centreback Morrison was his top player with 10 points after scoring at the Amex Stadium in mid-week. The situation at the bottom is quite intriguing with 2 teams Leo’s Power Blueboys and Gary’s Upside Team both level on points and trailing Rachel’s Blue Murder by 14 points. Top and bottom of our Champion of Champions League is certainly being contested with Pauline’s Vodka Army having a

boats finished without problems. The results were extremely close, showing just how well all crews performed. Mistral was again winner with an average lap time of 320.64 seconds. Second Ginetta in 350.02, third Shoestring Cuatro in 351.99, forth Shoestring Dos 352.62, fifth Sea Hopper 355.21, sixth RS Quba 360.29 and seventh Topaz Duo 377.97. Well done everybody! The next race day is on Easter Sunday April 21st from 10am at CTD, Los Narejos. You can find out more about SAMM at www.sailingmarmenor.com

slim 4 point lead at the top over Joe’s Keith Lard F.C. while at the other end Leo’s Power Blueboys are only 5 points behind Dave’s team The Hatters. Tremlow’s Terriers have taken over the top spot of our Manager of the Month for April which is being sponsored by the Arliquin in Albir who do a fine range of Pizzas and other tasty dishes. They have replaced Steve’s Flying Pigs XI who have dropped to 2nd only 4 points behind. Two teams are in joint 3rd place Craig’s Leeds-Leeds and Dawn’s Big Bad Boys who are both well in contention along with Jimmy’s Nick’s Blues and Linda’s Team Tapas for this excellent prize for 2. The Draw for the Semi-Finals

of our Weekender K.O.Cup Competition is now up on our website and will take place this weekend. The Two Favourites have been drawn against one another. BACK TO BAKU

by Alex Trelinski

The fourth round of the 2019 Formula One World Championship sees a return to street circuit action this Sunday with the Azerbaijan Grand Prix on the Baku City Circuit. Lewis Hamilton returns to Baku as the defending Azerbaijan Grand Prix champion, and will be aiming for a third straight victory, with Mercedes dominating the podium this season, with Hamilton and Sebastian Bottas finishing first and second in each of the three races to date. The two-time defending Formula 1 champion Hamilton maintained the torrid pace that earned him last year’s F1 Drivers crown with a decisive victory earlier this month at the Chinese Grand Prix, outpacing Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas by over six point five seconds, and he will certainly be the man to beat in Baku.

CAPITAL´S BIG RACE The Premier League fixture list has thrown up some two big clashes this weekend affecting the top and bottom, and none more dramatic than Sunday´s match in South Wales as Cardiff City welcome leaders Liverpool, or an instant Champions League reunion at the Etihad between Manchester City and Tottenham. With four matches remaining, Cardiff are still alive in their battle

against relegation, thanks to a Tuesday night win at Brighton, who appear to be falling apart, and go to Wolves on Saturday.. Neil Warnock´s side though have it all to do as they are still two points behind the Seagulls, with four matches remaining, plus they´ve played an extra game, which continues to be the same scenario for Klopp´s Liverpool in their

top-of-the-table scrap with Manchester City.. It´s tough stuff for City, with the quick Spurs rematch this Saturday lunchtime, and then that match in hand over Liverpool, which just happens to be a visit next Wednesday night to Old Trafford! Two wins for City would put them back in the driving seat, whilst there´s a battle royal for a Champions League slot, with just a point separating the London
