BRIT TRIUMPHS
IN BENIDORM RACE
by Simon Russell
The Benidorm stage of the female cyclists Setmana Ciclista Valenciana, one of the cycling calendar’s biggest events, was won by British rider Hannah Barnes. The race itself covered three laps of a 40km route around the city, each circuit covering the second-category climb of
Finestrat and was Hannah’s second stage win in four days, sufficient to win her the overall event. South African Ashleigh MoolmanPasio was second overall while Spanish riders Alicia Gonzalez and Mavi Garcia came in third and fourth respectively. Although the race last Sunday was declared a success by the Town Hall
and participants, there was some controversy as many motorists faced major disruptions when roads across the city centre were closed to four wheeled traffic during the middle of the day. Drivers trying to access the area around the Town Hall and Avenida Europe could get no closer than Poniente in many
cases, while there were complaints about the lack of prior information from local business owners and residents alike. Bus journeys that normally took ten minutes were taking well over an hour, while restaurants reported cancellations from people driving in for Sunday lunch unable to access the city centre.

blocks, initially on Levante and Poniente Playas. Cleaning schedules are also being altered so that one person is assigned to the cubicles at Poniente and one at Levante beach, a move that will probably
require the hiring of an additional member of staff. These works follow on from the recent expansion of the service for disabled beach users, while changes and improvements to the beach library are also being proposed.
THE “Premis Altea”, which was set up to recognise important cultural figures in the town, has decided to make a posthumous award to the late Ramon Lloren Barber, an internationally renowned artist from the town who died in 1989.
by Matthew Richards
This is the second edition of the awards and the ceremony was led by Mayor Jaime Llinares who said “This award not only recognises the importance of Sr Barber’s artistic career but also
his commitment to Altea. This was demonstrated by our town being featured in his best known works.” Barber’s family have donated works from the artist, and during his life the man himself donated 35 original works to the town he grew up in.

THE Poseidon Hotel chain in Benidorm has become the first across Valencia to offer the supply of baby equipment so that parents don’t have to bring it with them on holiday. They are using the platform “EasyBabyTrip”, which allows parents to pre-book items such as baths, play pens, bottle warmers, car seats and various other items that were not previously available. The Poseidon in Benidorm is part of the Hosbec hoteliers association, which has expressed its approval of the initiative and is encouraging other members to look into joining the scheme. A hotel spokesman said that although there is a charge for the service, much of this will be offset by reduced excess baggage charges; travelling, always a challenge with infants, will also be made easier with less luggage. Currently many hotels will supply a cot and possibly a high chair but rarely anything else for the younger traveller.
Toweryieldstreasures THE restoration and excavation work at Benidorm’s ancient Caletes Tower located on the clifftop at the Serra Gelada has resulted in the discovery of some important artefacts. These include sandals, vines for kindling fires, baskets, ropes and ceramic remains. There have also been lead bullets for muskets that would have been from a more recent era, probably when the towers were used as defence against marine

attacks. The archaeological team have described the finds as very exciting and there are plans to display them to the public in Benidorm, probably at the upcoming Boca Calvari museum exhibition about the Serra Gelada. During the work money has been spent on repairing brickwork and shoring up the cliff area near the tower while a perimeter fence has also been built.
Foodhoarder by Matthew Richards
A man has been arrested in Elche for various charges of abuse and cruelty against his family, even going so far as to hide the best food in the house for himself. After an alleged series of incidents his partner reported the matter to the police in February. On searching the
family home, they found food hidden in the man’s bedroom which he admitted was “the most appetizing and for his own consumption.” It is also alleged that he had broken various objects during arguments and had full control of the family income, causing problems for his partner and daughter.

Call for road reopening by Simon Russell
COUNCILLORS from Benidorm’s Ciudadanos party have called for action to be taken regarding the road closure during the Benidorm street market in the Rincon de Loix. Spokesman Rafa Gasent tabled a motion to “carry out the appropriate procedures to reopen traffic on the road adjacent to the private enclosure where the market is held.” He complains that residents in the area find the situation very difficult on Wednesdays and Sundays, the usual market days. Private security guards are controlling the traffic and they do this in the best interest of the market – a private enterprise – rather than people who live and work nearby. In the meantime any traffic control measures on market days should be carried out by the local police as they are in the rest of the city, said Gasent.
Robberies reduced
The Department of Public Safety in l’Alfas del Pi announced that robberies in the municipality reduced by 10% in 2017 from 2016. This was some of the positive news to come out of a meeting between senior local, Guardia Civil and National police officers and the Safety Department, chaired by Councillor Vicente Ripoll. The Deputy Governor for Alicante, Jose Saval, and the head of

the unit to tackle violence against women were all also in attendance. Mr Ripol said afterwards “We talked about various public safety topics which cannot all be made public due to their sensitive content. However this once again highlights the close co-operation between the different security bodies in the area.”

Surely if I have had a hysterectomy I no longer need smear tests? There is no ‘yes or no’ answer to this as it depends upon the situation. The important issue is that the patient knows exactly what type of hysterectomy she has had and the reason for the procedure.

During a smear test, cells are removed from the cervix (neck of the womb) and examined for changes that may lead to cancer later on. If a woman has had a TOTAL hysterectomy, the cervix will have been removed. If she has had a SUB-TOTAL hysterectomy the cervix will have been conserved. Therefore, in the case of a sub- total hysterectomy, the woman should attend for regular smears. Very frequently, women who have had a total hysterectomy will not need to attend as they have no cervix.
However, and this is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT, if the hysterectomy was performed as a result of cancer or for any other reason if there were precancerous changes or the suspicion of cancer, the woman will still need regular checks. In cases such as
these, a procedure known as a vault smear is performed. It is the same procedure but as the woman has no cervix, cells are removed from the closed end of the vagina and the vaginal walls. All women undergoing hysterectomy should ensure
that they know exactly what type of surgery they are having and ask the Gynaecologist if ongoing smear tests are recommended. If you are unable to find this information out, see your Family Doctor or Practice Nurse.

GARDENING ON THE COSTA BLANCA - Part 28 The Weekender articles about ‘exotic’ fruit and veg and an item in the latest Gardeners Circle Newsletter about eating insects, prompt thoughts about the very serious side of horticulture and agriculture in general. The primary reason for agriculture is, obviously, feeding people but do you realise that the human population of the Earth grows by the equivalent of a town the size of Swindon (or if you live in the better part of Britain –York!) EVERY DAY! Somehow this number has to be fed but currently we don’t produce enough food to do so. As with almost everything that you look into, the information you get depends on who you consult – ranging from impending disaster to we will manage because of improved techniques, plant varieties etc.
Alternative food sources could play a very big part in this ‘managing’ and this is where insect eating comes in. There was a BBC programme (Can Eating Insects Save the World on BBC Four) on the subject which should have enlightened us all but clearly eating meat is not the way forward for the world. It is a most inefficient way of producing enough calories to feed everyone. This is speaking as a dedicated carnivore but one not unwilling to change if it is necessary. Actually when we cut down the last of our palm trees (yet another victim to the dreaded weevil), we decided to retaliate and fried up a dish of the succulent maggots with garlic etc. They were OK but not worth the trouble when the supermarkets were just down the road! And that is partly the point – until
we are forced by necessity to change our ways, we won’t! Memory suggests that that programme like most documentaries seem to focus on showing you people sliding down a wriggling caterpillar or something – producing a natural revulsion – but it clearly doesn’t have to be like this. Dried and

ground up and turned into crisps or similar (which are already available, though at the usual stupid prices that novelties start off on), how can you tell the difference? This is obviously a subject which could run and run but enough for now - I’m off for my steak and chips!

Rugby La Vila comprehensively beaten
You travel a 1500 kilometres round trip spending some 16 hours plus in a coach, turn up to play a match in winter conditions of rain sleet and snow and get beat 320. This was the lot of La Vila on their recent visit to Ordizia in the Basque region. The home side had the distinct advantage of being accustomed to the weather and made full use of that in scoring their four tries. As hard and as well as the visitors played they could not come to terms with the conditions which prevailed throughout the whole 80 minutes. On a positive note La Vila came through without any harm save for their pride and it has not altered their league position which is currently10th and 3rd. from bottom. They now have two weeks before their home game against 8th placed
by Tony Fox
Gernika on February 25th at their home ground in VilaJoyosa. Coach Quinelli will have his work cut out to reinvigorate the team which now has just 3 home matches to improve their league position and avoid relegation. Their 3 away matches are against Gexto Artea, Computense Cisneros, and Independiente placed 12th., 9th. And 4th. Respectively. I would expect them to at the very least to beat bottom placed Gexto Artea and gain some bonus points from the other two matches. From their home gains they should go well against Gernika but will be up against it against 3rd.places Alcobendes and league current leaders Quesos Entrepinares in their finale.

FOOTBALL VIOLENCE CLAIMS LIFE
A policeman died and five people were arrested prior to a European football game last Thursday in Bilbao in Northern Spain after trouble broke out between fans of Athletic Bilbao
and Spartak Moscow in a Europa League second leg clash. It is believed that the dead officer died of a heart attack and an enquiry will be launched as to whether this was triggered by events.
The incident once again raises the issue of whether the Russian authorities will be able to control their notoriously violent football supporters during this summer’s World Cup. Spartak won the game 2-1
but exited the competition after losing the first leg in Moscow 3-1. Uefa issued a statement strongly condemning the violence and pledging to crack down on similar incidents.
