BRIT ON TRIAL IN ALICANTE FOR DRUG TRAFFICKING A notorious British criminal, with a string of previous drug convictions, went on on trial in an Alicante court earlier this week

BRIAN Charrington, 61, was arrested in July 2013, along with nine other members of a suspected drug trafficking gang, following an operation by the National Police organised crime unit (GRECO), in collaboration with security forces in the UK, USA, France, Venezuela, Colombia, Argentina and Brazil. During the operation, security officers seized 192 kilos of cocaine, believed to have a street value of around 9 million euros, hidden

inside an apartment in Playa del Albir, belonging to the accused, who at the time was amongst the top ten most wanted criminals in Europe. In addition to the stash of cocaine, which arrived into the country from South America via the port of Altea, police also seized assets including a dozen luxury properties, high end cars, six recreational boats and in addition, placed embargoes on bank accounts containing around a 5 million euros. Alleged Altea drug baron goes on trial From Front Page The police investigation, which began in January 2010, initially focused on Charringtonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s wife, Isabelle Robert, who was well known to security forces throughout Europe, through her involvement with another convicted drug trafficker, Frenchman Alain Coelier, who had served a prison sentence for kidnapping and extortion in Estepona in 1987. Coelier, was murdered six months later in the summer of 2010, along with his bodyguard in La Nucia. Charrington, who appeared in court last Monday, alongside his wife, son Ray and six other members of the alleged gang, and has a string of previous drug trafficking convictions in the UK, Germany, France and Spain, dating back to 1990, denies any involvement

in the shipment of cocaine at the centre of this case. Prosecuting counsel accuse the suspects of crimes against public health, falsification of documents, membership of a criminal organisation, concealment and money laundering and are asking for jail sentences of up to 17 years. Speaking only through their lawyers, Charrington, who was released on bail in the autumn of 2016 and the other accused deny any involvement in the case. Charrington insists his business activity is purely a real estate entrepreneur, â&#x20AC;&#x153;I buy and sell villas and pay my taxesâ&#x20AC;?, he said via his lawyer. He also denies travelling to France with his wife in 2011 to organise the

importation of the 192 kilos of cocaine. Investigating officers had used listening devices to record conversations between Charrington and his associates, but the accused denies that his is the voice on the recordings and that the devices belonged to him. Defending counsel asked, via a judge in Denia, that these recordings be inadmissible as evidence as they violated the constitutional rights of their clients. Although, Charrington was present, when police raided the Albir property in 2013, he denied knowledge of the cocaine stash and when asked why he wiped a memo board, with names and phone numbers written on it, clean, he claimed he did it to protect his wife. Robert confirmed to the court that she had previously fled to Venezuela,

following her involvement in the Coelier case, but been extradited and sentenced to nine years in prison, a 200 million euro fine for

the importation of 3.5 kg of cocaine. Two of gang of accused suspects were not present in court this week. One,

because he is already serving a prison sentence and one because he is involved in search and capture. The case continues.

Skyscraper safety checks INSPECTORS from the Marina Baixa Fire Consortium have started carrying out safety checks on a large number of the city’s high rise building. These inspections are concentrating on the “dry columns”, the installations that carry water to each floor of the building should it be needed in an emergency. The first safety check was of a 20 floor building on Avenida Montecarlo and Mayor Toni Perez joined Jaime Lloret, the Citizen Security Councillor and the inspection crew to see for himself what is required. Mr Lloret stressed the importance of the dry columns in the event of a high rise fire and that there are plans to inspect about 50 such buildings by the end of 2018. These are all to be done outside of peak season so that resources are on standby in the event of forest fires and other emergencies that the summer months can bring. Mr Lloret went on to say that ultimately the aim is to make Benidorm one of the safest tourist

destinations in the world. “Improve the image of Benidorm ….. not just for a few weeks, but for the three months of summer.” The measures now under consideration by the town hall, would see not only a clamp down on illegal beach traders, but also target petty thieves who prey on tourists and the pea men operating on Levante beach promenade, bringing, “Tranquillity to tourists, by deterring criminals”, said the councillor.

Help for lonely and vulnerable older Benidorm residents Benidorm city hall have launched a social welfare project aimed at preventing social exclusion amongst the elderly population of the municipality. The ‘Operation Compass’ project is designed to help isolated singles and couples, particularly those over 75 years, to become aware of the services and support available to them within the city. Social Welfare councillor Angel Lorca launched the initiative explaining that the city hall wish to bring to light the invisible plight of elderly people, wishing to stay in their own homes, when family or partner cannot look after them.

“Through a network of volunteers and organisations such as pharmacies and health professionals, we want to guarantee the safety and social inclusion of the elderly”, he said. He stressed that many of them have not chosen to live in isolation and are unaware of resources such as telecare, home help, day centres and programmes such as ‘Majors a Casa’ and ‘Menjars a Casa’, which can improve their quality of life. Benidorm has almost 5000 registered residents over the age of 75 living in the city, half of

whom live alone, and many of whom are foreigners, so with this in mind, the information on the project is available in English and French, in addition to Castellano and Valenciano. To highlight the project, the social welfare department plans to conduct awareness days in local health centre, pharmacies, neighbourhood associations, and Red Cross or caritas locations. The Marina Baixa Hospital in Villajoyosa will also be involved, by publishing a leaflet with a short questionnaire designed to identify vulnerable and lonely elderly people in the area, who may benefit from the ‘Operation Compass’ initiative.

Artistic pupils on show AN exhibition of works by art pupils from the La Nucia IES has gone on show in the Levant Hall of the town’s auditorium. There are 58 pieces on show created by 28 students, described as an eclectic mix of works. All those

involved are taking the Artistic Drawing course at Bachillerato level, generally 16 to 19 year olds. This is the second such exhibition by the group and the 132nd that the La Nucia Auditorium has presented since

Missing Benidorm woman found dead Friends of an Austrian pensioner, who disappeared on a trip to the south of Spain in mid April, are in mourning, following the discovery of her body a week later. The group of worried associates organised a missing persons campaign last week after losing contact with Claudia Hibler, aged 61, who had travelled from her home in Benidorm to spend a few days in Linea de la Concepcion in Cadiz

Hiebler, who was last seen around 18.00h on April 17th at the hotel in which she was staying for

a few days holiday, needed daily medication, which was of particular concern to her friends. Police in La Linea de la concepcion, confirmed that a body discovered in the vicinity of the hotel in the morning of last Tuesday April 24th, was that of the missing Benidorm pensioner. Investigating officers are keeping the case open until an autopsy has been conducted to evaluate the cause of death.

Lighthouse labouring A group of lâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Alfas del Pi residents who are on a government funded training scheme gained some invaluable work experience last week by carrying out landscape restoration work at Albir lighthouse. Students attending the Et Formem Workshop School constructed a breakwater wall, repaired a fence, replaced parts of another

fence and will also be installing irrigation. It is hoped that the ten people on the scheme, half male and half female, will gain sufficient experience and training to enable them to find work after the four month course finishes. Funds for the restoration of the lighthouse area came from a development grant.

Italian exchange A group of exchange students from Italy have been in Benidorm this week, the third successive year they have been in the Costa Blanca town. The children are in their first year of Bachillerato, roughly equivalent to the UK sixth form, and are participating in an exchange programme with the IES

lâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Almadrava School. On Monday the thirteen students and their two teachers visited Mayor Toni Perez and were shown round the Town Hall offices. The Benidorm students will shortly be travelling over to Verona where the current visitors attend school.

Benidorm Bullring concert venue plans hit structural snags Plans to utilise the iconic Benidorm Bullring as a venue for concerts and cultural activities are on hold after technicians discovered structural flaws in the building. Following the demise of regular bullfights in the arena, which sits at the top of Benidormâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Parc Lâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Aiguera in the centre of the city, the venue remains unused for much of the year. After successfully staging a number of pop concerts in recent years, including gigs by Australian popstar Peter Andre, singer Manu and other popular Spanish recording artists, the city council had revealed plans to increase the number of events in the arena. However, a technical report conducted at the beginning of last month highlighted the possibility of structural faults, both within the arena building, backstage areas, and basement dressing rooms. City officials were aware that remedial work would be required, but were unaware that the problems were as severe.

They subsequently commissioned a further study, which was conducted by University of Alicante surveyors, whose findings concluded with a recommendation that the venue should not be used for public events until a detailed survey looking into sonic implications, building contamination, ultrasounds, and geotechnical samples of steel and framework had been completed. Officials have now commissioned two companies, one to compile a report on the cost of reformations and another to conduct laboratory testing of the structure. Once these reports have been received, they will be able to proceed with renovation plans to make the bullring a safe venue for future events. A concert by Spanish singer Raphael, scheduled for september 15th has already been rescheduled to one of the other city concert venues, either Auditorio Julio Iglesias, or the Foietes football stadium.

Says David “I can work with many nationalities at my school and the ICC can be used in 40 different countries. As long as folks can speak English and meet certain other criteria they can come to me and become safe and confident power boat drivers pretty quickly.” One of David´s ex-studentsis Argentinian but lives in Valencia. “The Spanish system is crazy” says Thomas Alejandro. “Way too detailed and theoretical. It was so much quicker through the RYA school. But David was very thorough.” This sentiment is repeated to me by another ex-student of David´s,

Mark Langton, who felt that David was extremely conscientious. “If you find an exercise difficult, David will make you repeat it a lot, until you get it right. And then he will move you on to something else for a while, but before the end of the day he will ask you to do that exercise again to prove that yoú ve mastered it.” A third ex-student of David´s called Graham Lindley was very complimentary about how impressive the courses were. “Educational and entertaining! fun in the future if you have lucky enough to have access to modest boats. I had a great time doing my Day Skipper in Mallorca. Five days of glorious sailing, making new friends whilst learning, laughing, literally making headway and sense of the art of sailing. One unforgettable day for me was when we were moored in a small port (made of those giant chunky stone blocks) where on the dock the instructor was teaching us how to throw lines (ropework). I clocked a mast that looked suspiciously too close to the outer harbour and pointed it out to the instructor. His eyebrows shot up and we scrambled up the rocks to find a small sailing boat trapped by it s jib sheet (a rope ´ basically) amongst the rocks of the harbor. A very overweight naked lady was slithering around the deck sobbing whilst her very skinny man-friend who might have had his fun earlier but was now clearly both distraught and lacking in basic experience. Eventually our intrepid instructor (a crowd had gathered, he didń t have much choice, and I was prodding him!) clambered down the rocks, climbed onto the vessel at huge risk, gallantly threw a towel immediately on the naked Senora, and (this is where I learned forever to always carry a knife) whipped out his Leatherman and cut them free. He then managed to keep control of things until a rescue boat arrived. I doń t mind telling you readers that I gave him a special award that night, as well as a trophy I made out of beer-cans and string. It s a lot of fun being on the ´ water. Benidorm’s bid for UNESCO world heritage status The Costa Blanca’s city of skyscrapers, often nicknamed ‘BeniYork’ is in the midst of an unlikely ten year quest to be accepted as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Following the recent death of one of Benidorm’s staunchest defenders, sociologist Mario Gaviria, who was part of a multidisciplinary team conducting field work in the city during the early 1970’s, the desire for cultural recognition has come under the spotlight once again. The path towards world heritage status began in 2008, instigated by the city mayor of the time, Perez Fenoll, but it was only after a change of government in 2009, when Gaviria, a vocal supporter of the ‘vertical tourist city’ model, was asked to return and develop a working group assigned to the task. He oversaw an upgrade to city parks and infrastructure and put into motion a request for the AVE rail network to reach the city.

In 2011, during a presentation organised by Tomas mazon, a professor of tourist sociology, Gaviria reiterated his views on Benidorm’s cultural heritage bid. “A city that is a reflection of a liberating European culture, such as Benidorm, should be recognised for Unesco heritage as much as flamenco itself”, said the sociologist. “Benidorm is underestimated and a lot of the posh and the rich and the classistas hate it”, he continued. “But ask all the old spaniards and europeans who can come at these prices to spend a few days in one of the best climates in the world, with an extraordinary price-quality ratio and they will tell you it deserves cultural recognition.” Current city mayor Toni Perez recently reaffirmed that the bid was still a realistic possibility and

that in 2015, six out of the ten qualifying categories had already been achieved. He confirmed that a team of 20 professionals from different

backgrounds are currently working on fully attaining the credentials required to put forward a credible bid and had they had already completed half of their task.

Benidorm hopes that UNESCO will recognise the city for its unique strengths of vertical living, sustainable tourism model, water management and climate.

Summer feet!

Summer is here and I am already starting to see some of the foot problems associated particularly with the summer months.

Mitzi This beautiful German Shepherd cross is 2 years old and was originally found as a puppy in the mountains with her siblings. She has been spayed and micro chipped and has a passport. She is a beautiful dog with lovely markings and temperament. She would make a brilliant walking companion, is very quick to learn and loves to play and is good off the lead. Cracked heels are a very common problem and are usually a lot worse in the summer as the heels are more exposed. There are two things causing the problem: One because the back of sandals are open to the air and the thicker skin on the back of the heel dries out more quickly due to increased evaporation of moisture from the skin. Whereas during the winter, the heels are covered with socks or hosiery and closed in shoes. Two, there is the mechanical action of the sandal without the heel cup of the shoe to support the heel pad as it compresses and spreads with each step that you take, there are tremendous forces going through the heel at each step greater than the body weight due to the forward movement of the body. This causes increased shearing forces on the back of the heel leading to cracks and fissures which if open can cause pain and discomfort. This second action is further exacerbated by a narrow heel cup where the heel spills over the back of the shoe which

increases the shearing forces on the heel exponentially. Heel splits can be painful and debilitating, the preventative treatment is to moisturize the heels regularly, but the ones I see in clinic are usually beyond this stage and require a little more help. As with most problems, the best way to treat the problem is to treat the cause, therefore removing all the hard skin/callous and chasing the splits to make them U shaped as opposed to V shaped which propagates easily. Where there is an open bleeding split a liquid paraffin impregnated dressing and some strapping works very well, not only to reduce the pain but also to help to start the heeling process. This type of dressing/strapping applied after debridement of the callous, if kept on for a few days not only holds the splits together but also gives the

cracks a chance to heal, if you will excuse the pun. There are a couple of conditions which further predispose people to cracked heels. The first being psoriasis which can cause more dryness in the heels with immature skin cells rising to the surface before they are ready meaning dry weak skin which is more vulnerable to splits. Fungal infections of the skin also known as athletes’ foot can also cause the skin to be dry and crack anyway and if the heels are affected can make the situation worse.

Foreign demand for Spanish property hit new high in 2017 www.spanishpropertyinsight.com

The annual report from the Spanish Land Registersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Association (Registradores) reveals that foreign buyers snapped up more than 60,000 Spanish homes last year. 60,800 homes in Spain were acquired by foreigners last year, based on sales inscribed in the Spanish Land Register and analysed in the annual housing market report just published by the Registrars. This is a new record for foreign demand, above even the boom years, and the first time foreign buyers have acquired more than 60,000 Spanish homes in one year. The market share of

foreign demand fell slightly from 13.25% of the housing market in 2016 to 13.11% in 2017 (see chart above), but only because local demand grew faster than foreign demand. Foreign demand bottomed out as 4.24% of the Spanish housing market in 2009, and has been growing ever since. Overall foreign demand increased last year despite a decline in the dominant British market in the light of Brexit, as demand from all other markets rose (next chart). Nonetheless, the British are still 15% of the foreign market, and Brexit has had a relatively subdued impact on British demand,

Rugby La Vila defeated in last home game On a glorious Sunday afternoon La Vila went down 14-24 to league leaders Quesos Entrepinares. So at the halfway stage it was 7-12. The second half saw the visitors step up a gear cutting through the home side defence easily and scoring two more tries but only converting one.
