BENIDORM FIRE STATION GROWING

PLANS have been confirmed to expand Benidorm’s fire station, both in size and number of personnel.

The facilities at the Salto del Agua are increasing from 1,500 square meters to 2,000

while there will no longer be the unsuitable situation of vehicles and staff sharing space. The living area for onsite staff is also to be improved with the kitchens, lockers, bedrooms and communal

areas all being refurbished.

Additionally there will be at least 12 firefighters on site at all times as opposed to the current nine. The number of shift-working staff will increase from 12 to 16. The

works are due to be completed by the end of the year, said Deputy Emergencies Councillor Jaime Lloret who made the announcement last week when visiting the station.

It’s not every day that you chat to an Oscar winning actor - while on set for the filming of star studded crime-drama TV series Peaky Blinders.

British actor Michael Garry - who starred in Series 4 of the BBC iconic criminal gangs’ show - talks exclusively to me while on vacation in Benidorm.

Adrien Brody, winner of Best Actor award at the 2003 Oscars, for starring in Roman Polanski’s ‘The Pianist’ in 2002, was a gangster in Peaky Blinders.

“I spoke twice to Oscar winning actor Adrien Brody - thinking he was just an extra, like me,” said Michael.

Michael, 66, from Preston, Lancashire, is spending time away in Benidorm with his wife Ros. Michael, who has also played roles in Coronation Street and Emmerdale, featured in a scene from Peaky Blinders as a ‘heavy’ when leading Boxer Goliath through the corridors, prior to entering the boxing ring.

Michael was one of Alfie Solomon’s heavies, who made sure nothing untoward happened to Goliath, a southern counties welterweight boxing champion.

Goliath had a bout against Bonnie Gold.

tough bareknuckle fighter, had ambitions to join the elite of world pro boxing , needing Thomas Shelby’s help to succeed.

Cillian Murphy, who stars as Thomas Shelby, plays the lead role in Peaky Blinders, a 1919 British TV crime-drama series in the aftermath of the Great War, set in Birmingham.

Retiring soldiers, newly minted revolution and criminal gangs, fighting for survival in the wake of economic upheaval.

One of the most powerful gangs is Peaky Blinders, run by retiring war hero Thomas Shelby and his family.

“Tom Hardy plays Jewish gangster Solomon’s who was in conflict with the Birmingham gang,” said Michael.

“Tom Hardy used to bring his dog ‘Woody’ on set throughout filming,” said Michael, who has also starred in Bollywood films.

The fifth series of Peaky Blinders is scheduled to be broadcast in 2019.

Summer of sports SKATING has been included in Benidorm’s summer citizen’s sports programme for the first time this year, with the full list and timetable being announced last week.

Councillor for Sports Arturo Cabrillo chaired the press conference, saying that even the youngest can participate in the mainly outdoor activities. He also said that “we are using our most precious resource, the sea” with kayaking, sailing and fishing all being

included. Football, beach volleyball, gymnastics, tennis and pilota all also feature as well as the usual swimming courses at the municipal pool.

The registration period for residents started on 4 June and begins on 11 June for non-residents. You will need to bring along a DNI/ NIE or passport and minors will need documentation completed by a guardian.

Monster mussels found

off Costas A species of bivalve which has been classified as “seriously threatened” by the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries have been found in large numbers in fish farms off Calpe and Villajoyosa. Pinna nobilis, commonly known as the fan mussel, is one of the largest Mediterranean mussels and can reach a length of 120cm, about four feet in old money.

Around 400 of the juvenile creatures were found in a recent scientific analysis of the farms by the Institute of Marine Research. There

were also a large amount of pinna rudis larvae found, a more common but still rare and protected bivalve.

A spokesman for the institute called the findings “unprecedented and remarkable”, although the team are now faced with the arduous task of moving the molluscs to a safe environment where they can be monitored. The species originally became endangered after a viral outbreak a few years ago that all but wiped them out.

BENIDORM taxi drivers applying for a licence to trade will need to have a working knowledge of Spanish, Valenciano and English under new guidelines being introduced.

Children with life threatening illnesses will benefit from proceeds made at a second hand rastro in Albir this weekend.

Money raised from the two-day event, to be held at Bar Los Musicos, in Calle Rodrigo 10, Albir on Saturday June 9 and Sunday June 10, will go to the Make A Wish charity, which makes dreams come true for sick and terminally ill kids throughout Spain.

Co-organiser, Rob Adema explained that the philosophy of the worldwide charity is to give hope to sick children by making wishes come to true for them.

“Wishes from children vary from going to Disneyland, meeting Ronaldo, seeing a princess or being a policeman for a day,” said Rob, “It gives them something to look forward to and energises them to fight the terrible diseases they suffer from.”

Are you depressed?…….Where is your happiness?

Next time you are depressed, perhaps it would be an idea to try to find your happiness! I mean that quite sincerely. We lose our happiness when we lose sight of the things we have to be happy about. If there was a prize for naming the most things that make us happy I guess we could all be strong contenders in that competition!

That is because we ALL have things in our lives to be happy about, but we don’t always think of them. Remembering and appreciating those things is a good remedy to squash depression.

Happiness is a state of mind, it is not due to a set of circumstances. I have had clients who have told me about

all the material things they have, villas, swimming pools, money in the bank, caring partners…and still they are not happy. When we get to that stage in our lives we need to be very basic and think about fundamental things to lift ourselves up, and I think the most basic happiness is that WE WOKE UP this morning, when millions of people didn’t! They would probably have given anything to swap places with us, just to have the chance to live for another day, even with the problems we feel are pulling us down.

I was impressed one day when I met a paraplegic woman in a wheelchair outside of a shop. She was very distorted, even facially,

and one leg was dramatically twisted. I started to feel sorry for her till I saw the smile on her face, and heard the cheery words she was saying to people coming in and out of the shop.

I was moved to silent tears, as I had forgotten to think of the things I had to be happy about in my life on that particular day. As I came out of the shop I touched her shoulder and told her she was wonderful. She really made my day, and I have never forgotten her. Perhaps we could think of her if we feel depressed, and be grateful for all the things we take for granted.

Happiness makes us stronger, and people with strength attract others, and that can make us even happier, so

the circle goes on, starting off by being happy about just one or two things and it just grows!! There is nothing like sitting and thinking silently and privately for a few moments about the good things in our lives,… and we all have them.

Like just having another day to live, for a start… what a bonus! What are we going to do with it….mentally, if not physically? Don’t let’s waste it with negative thoughts that pull us down. If you feel your life has been a large area of unattractive waste ground, plant seeds of happiness! Once you plant them, just watch them grow!! Why not try it?!…

Mention was made last week of the Genetic Modification of plants. Now there’s a contentious subject! For every claimed advantage to the process, there seems to be a claimed drawback.

The term GMO is usually used as a reference for food products because that is where most GMOs are found but it is an abbreviation that stands for “genetically modified organism.” A GMO is created when genes from one species are artificially forced, in laboratory conditions, into the gene structures of unrelated plants or animals. These genes can originate from any living being, plant or creature, including humans, and be forced into the genetic structure of any other living organism. The first GMOs were introduced in the 1990s since when the USA has accepted genetically modified versions of many of their most important crops while the rest of the world

and Europe in particular, has treated the system with considerable caution. Of course, because many American food products are imported into Europe, it is difficult for us to avoid incorporating GM products into our diet – in other words, unless you have been very careful, you are already risking the claimed

drawbacks of these modifications. In the USA, the regulatory body, the Food and Drugs Administration(FDA) does not yet require GMOs to be specifically labelled but “has issued guidance for manufacturers who wish to voluntarily label their foods as containing or not containing such ingredients”. In the

EU (including in the UK), foods must say on their label if they contain or consist of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) or contain ingredients produced from GMOs. This means that all GM foods, including flour, cooking oils and glucose syrups from a GM source, have to be labelled as GM. A quick check on two cereal packets showed no such information although some of the ingredients were likely GMO candidates!

One of the showpiece ‘GM success stories’ is that of the saving of the Hawaiian papaya industry by the introduction of the genetically engineered papaya variety named Rainbow. The industry began suffering severe economic losses due to the impact of the devastating, aphid spread, papaya ringspot virus as early as the 1950s and, by 1997, the virus had almost destroyed the commercial crop. Production of Hawaii’s

fifth largest crop fell by nearly 40 pc, farmers were going out of business, and Hawaii’s once $17 million papaya industry was struggling to survive. The Rainbow variety, which includes a gene that made the papaya plants resistant to the ringspot virus, was introduced commercially in 1998 and produced immediate results. Within four years, the genetic ‘improvement’ had not only stopped the rapid decline of the industry, but production actually returned to levels near where they were before the papaya ringspot virus invasion.

Against this economic success story, the arguments of the anti-GM lobby seem to revolve round the

‘potential’ possibilities of the inclusion of an allergen in the gene because it contains a string of amino acids identical to a known allergen and of increased antibiotic resistance, which contributes to the risk of superbugs, or antibiotic-resistant disease. In view of the economic value of the crop, you can imagine which side of the argument is currently winning!

By Tony Myles THERE is a very old joke about the golfer who demonstrates his new ball that sends out a bleep from wherever it lands. It floats on water and when the light starts to fade it also flashes so it is easily spotted in the undergrowth. When asked where he bought it he replies that he found it!

This shaggy dog tale is about to come true.

There is a company that has now developed a golf ball with a microchip inserted into the core.

Combine this with an app on your mobile phone and you will have instant feedback on all the relevant statistics on your golf shot. Imagine data being presented to you on the speed of your shot, the spin rate, distance carried and the launch angle. And for some, perhaps more importantly, the actual location of where your shot has settled. Whilst this may be of little consolation when it is several feet under water, at least you will know for certain exactly where it is.

The good news is that as the development costs become absorbed into the sales revenue so the costs will be reduced and perhaps in a few years this will mean that most players will invest in these in much the same way as today they buy a sleeve of ProV1s.

Will it become a huge success or merely an overnight gimmick designed to end up in the Bargain Bucket?

We asked a domain expert for his views.

When electronic distance calibration devices first appeared we recognised the potential benefit and offered them at the lowest prices on the market. I think that this new technology sounds very exciting and we will be keep a close eye

on developments. Once it is proven and available at reasonable prices we will be offering it from our shop in Ondara.”

That is unlikely to happen for a year or so as the manufacturers plan to launch it later this year with a bundle of regular balls. The concept being that you can use the Genius ball a few times during a round and play with identical regular

balls on the majority of holes. The projected price will be close to €50 for a dozen which will include three Genius balls.

Do you think that this could become the standard for professional competitions.

The prospect of a competitor having to return to a tee because an errant shot can’t be found would be a think of the past. At a time when the sport is seeking to streamline the game that must be a positive move forward. Or is it a step too far that is starting to allow technology to invade the game.

o play a good golf shot - you do not hit the ball the clubhead hits the ball - You Swing the clubhead.

HAVING recently received the new catalogue from a golf component supplier I was amused and surprised by the description of some of the golf club shafts, especially the one described as being designed for the more aggressive swings. Faster rhythm yes, but does aggression produce more clubhead speed?

The words; Balance, Control, Stability, consistency, swing speeds being slower or faster, enhancing playability, makes for an easier swing, produces comfort better feel, more stable swing, extending flight distance, vibration dampening, etc. are generally used, but when it comes to being designed for aggressive swings, you must wonder what the next description is going to be. Will it continue to drift away from the concept of a rhythmical golf swing, for the preference of just hit the ball harder and harder.

Care must be taken over the words that are used to describe what someone has been doing and what others think that they have seemed to have done whilst playing golf.

Most good golfers will tell you that they hit the ball well today when what they did was hit good golf shots. They go to the range and practise their swing, to better

their golf shots.

One of the best golfers of their time stated that, before a tournament he went to the practice ground to “prepare for play”, then go to the golf course and “play”.

When the game was over go again to the practice area to “un-play” the game, to get back into the condition to start all over again the next day.

The definition of the word swing according to the “Collins Concise English Dictionary”, to swing is to move backwards and forwards, as a freely hanging object, to turn as on a hinge or swivel, to have exciting rhythmic quality. To move a bat or weapon etc. with a sweeping motion and various other similar examples of continuous movements.

The movement of the golf club shaft is to produce dynamic energy down the its length by flexing backwards to forwards accelerating the clubhead as it passes forwards through the position of the ball.

Will aggression towards the ball make for better golf shots ?

GOLFERS all over the Costa Blanca, and the world are all looking for the “secret” move that will improve their scores and give them the swing that they have always dreamed of, but this dream movement, unfortunately does not exist.

Instead, golfers need to look within themselves to find the reasons behind their short-comings, this is not meant to sound derogatory or rude. Instead it is the honesty that golfers need

to be able to truly improve their games.

I have given a lot of lessons and a recurrent theme that I see is the mis-interpretation of the faults that plague a golfer, sometimes momentarily or sometimes for what may seem an entire lifetime strolling the fairways.

These flaws may have a technical base, but the constant self-reminding when the flaw in question rears its ugly head, results in a golfer allowing mental interference to overcome them, cloud their judgement if you wish.

It is this lack of clarity that is causing more of a problem than the actual issue with your technique Let me explain, you can have the perfect technique, but if your mind is thinking about the meeting that you may not make because of slow play or the need to get up and down from the green side bunker to win the club championship, you will still fail to hit the shot that you are attempting, regardless of your technique.

This is the power of the mind, it is the reason why we all try to stay in the present, focus on what we

are doing NOW, not what may happen or what has happened.

Watching golf on TV you will often hear the pundits dissecting the swings of the world´s best golfers, pointing out the reason for a mis-hit or mistake, but ultimately this is only for TV. The main reason for a single mishit is the mental approach taken by the player.

It is almost inconceivable to many that the mind can be solely to blame, but you also hear that a player “choked” coming down the stretch, losing the tournament

because they couldn’t cope with the pressure of the situation.

Pressure does not affect how we swing the club, it changes the way we think about swinging the club, ultimately taking control of the moment.

A prime example of this is what I call the “provisional ball syndrome”.

How many times have you hit a poor shot, requiring you to play a provisional ball, only to hit your best shot of the day with your provisional ball?

Regularly? This is not a surprise as the provisional

ball is your potential, it is the way your body wants to swing the golf club, you are not clouding the issue with your mind, that is too occupied with thinking about the previous bad shot you hit.

Reaching your potential does not necessarily require a text book swing, which to my mind is nothing more than a marketing ploy, it requires you to trust yourself, your natural ability to achieve the results that you want.

When we step back and allow our bodies to function naturally, on their own invariably we perform better. This could be referred to as being in “the zone”, a state of mind where we are almost unable to explain what we did, how it felt or what we were thinking. It just happened. If you can achieve this state of mind more regularly then your scores will tumble.

THE Brits are well known for being obsessed by the weather and so I hesitate to raise the subject here but I must pose the question. Has it been more unsettled this year?

And not only in Spain.

If you look at other locations you will surely spot a similar trend.

The UK was promised record-breaking high temperatures, clear blue skies and barbecue conditions. They certainly got the high temperatures,

accompanied by thunder storms and flooding.

In the US Tiger Woods was doing well on his campaign to improve his ranking. At five under for his second round, following a vintage 95-yard shot for an eagle at the 11th, he was about to putt for a birdie at the 12th when play was suspended due to the threat of lightning.

Also in the States, a series of thunderstorms hit Alabama and resulted in the termination of the US Women’s Open at Shoal

Creek. Play was halted and half of the field was unable to complete their second round.

The unsettled conditions have also affected the French Tennis Open where, despite forecasted clear skies, the heavens opened and Rafa’s match had to be postponed.

It is a fact that the more birthdays you have the more that months and years tend to meld together. However, I am reasonably certain that it wasn’t too long ago that we were concerned

about the long drought and subsequent water shortage.

Can I take it that this is less of a concern these days?

WHAT IS THE WEATHER FORECAST? Many of us have a favourite weather app either on our laptop, pc or phone and for overall accuracy I can recommend www. yr.no. It is Norwegian and I can offer no explanation as to why it should be more accurate than others, but time after time it does prove to be so.

There is one topic on which the vast majority of golfers are in agreement and on which vast tomes have already been written.

Individually you can be enjoying a good round and making straight and long drives, precise chips onto the green and deadly accurate putts. Then you come up behind a group who appear to be intent on taking as many shots as they need in order to reach the green, only to take a further three or four putts before deciding to move on.

Your concentration lapses as you become irritated by their apparent lack of consideration.

Your long straight drives become hooks and your chips become shanks. Irritation turns to rage as you three putt and your blood pressure mounts. You are ready to explode if you get close enough to that tardy group ahead.

So who is to blame?

If you ask any golfer if they have been guilty of slow play would anyone own up?

I suspect not, as it is invariably someone else who is the culprit.

Some years ago I played with a small group of friends that included one chap who would wait patiently for players behind him to play before going into his setup routine for each shot. This included club selection, practice swing,

feet positioning check, second practice swing, recheck alignment and eventually the shot. I pointed out that this process took more than 30 seconds on every shot and whilst that doesn’t sound like a long time it means an extra 45 minutes on each round. A simple solution. “Be ready to play when it is your turn.”

Realisation dawned and the 30 seconds was instantly reduced to a much more acceptable 10 seconds and 30 minutes was wiped off his round.

Unless you are a professional competing for large sums, Golf is essentially a sociable game and much of the pleasure is obtained in the interaction with your fellow players. But this vital component should be measured against the needs of the other golfers. Not only those in your group but also the group behind and the ones behind them. A little bit of efficiency built into your game has the potential to yield significant improvements and act as a signal to your colleagues.

So is Ready Golf the “cure-all” for slow Play or what else do we need to incorporate? More next week.

IT is appropriate that a Society founded on the Costa Blanca should be named the White Coast Society. And equally appropriate is the fact that unlike many other societies The White Coast do not confine themselves to one home golf club, preferring instead to travel north and south along the white coast visiting clubs from El Saler to Font de Lop. The society is quite young by many standards having been formed in 2004. Gary Stone and Dave Peacock were the founder members and their objective was to create a group of golfers who wanted to play the game seriously, but would nevertheless place a high value on the companionship that it provided.

Today the society has a full complement of sixty members but nevertheless they would consider membership applications where the applicant has been recommended by an existing member and especially from lady golfers or anyone with a low handicap.

The existing range of handicaps is very impressive with players as low as plus 2 and up to 36.

Gary Stone remains an active member and indeed is the Society Captain this year. He has a constancy which many golfers would envy having played off under 5 for fifty years.

How do you choose which courses to use?

I asked Gary for his views on what makes a good society venue.

“The welcome at each course is paramount to enjoying the day. Many members prefer to use buggies and these are always reserved in advance.

It is reassuring to find that they are set aside and labelled when we arrive. Attention to detail is always important and the fact that some of our members are presented with a vegetarian option on any meals can also help create a positive feeling about the Club. It also doesn't cost much to offer the players a snack at the end of game or some free tapas? This can benefit the club as the tendency is ti have a second beer.

Finally we are all experienced players and appreciate an efficiently run course where the delays are minimised. This can be assured by a “friendly” but “firm” Marshall who monitors slow play and takes action to eliminate this curse!.”

Alvaro

Quiros Garcia I, Alvaro Quiros Garcia, was born on January 21st 1983 in a small town in the Cádiz province, Spain.

My humble father was a gardener and a golfer. By the age of nine I had taken my first steps into a sport that would eventually become my livelihood and passion. It all started on La Cañada Golf Club.

THE BEGINNING From the age of 14 I played golf alongside my other great sporting passion, football. I was a decent football player and, at least they say that, I showed great skills and attitude as a cadet in my hometown team.

But eventually I had to choose between the two sports. With some good advice from my father, I left football. I did this in order to have time for all the practice and travel that is required of one who aims to become a great golfer.

To the age of 16, I continued to learn and practice my game at La Cañada Golf Club. I was coached and supervised by the local teaching staff, in particular Pedro Tineo, a great golfer and a superb teacher with a passion for teaching and inspiring young talents.

He started to work with me in a serious and methodical way, inside his house with no ball, simply watching my swing path.

My practice didn’t stop at the golf course. After school, I used to go to Pedro’s house to practice on his terrace. I also spent many late nights on an improvised training course, dressed in warm clothes to keep the winter out.

There I worked over and over again on my swing under the glare of the spotlights, and Pedro of course.

I trained every day, for many hours, swinging and swinging while working on my technique. It was hard work and maybe a bit too much for a 15-year-old boy.

It is often at moments like this that people throw in the

towel because they feel that the sacrifices you have to make in order to become an elite athlete are more than they can handle. But my own determination together with my father’s constant support paid off. In 1999, when I was 16 years old, I competed for Spain for the first time.

FROM TEEN TO GOLFER When I was 18 years old I had a handicap of +1 and managed to win a scholarship to enter the Residential High Performance Centre Joaquin Blume in Madrid. I shared facilities with athletes who are now successful Olympians: Andrès Diaz, Juan Carlos Higuero, Aitami Ruano, the triathlete Ivan Rana and the hockey player Bemardino Herrera, amongst others.

It was during this period I joined the national under21-team, to play alongside names such as Gonzalo Fernandez Castano, Alfredo Garcia Heredia, Pablo Martin and Alejandro Canizares.

Playing in the Spanish team colours, we won the European Amateur Team Championship title. After that I managed to finish 4th place twice in the individual European Amateur Individual Championship and win the prestigious Biarritz cup with

60 strokes. I also appeared twice at the British Amateur.

At this point in life Jose Rivero, the advisor to the Spanish team, took me under his wings. From that day on he has advised and assisted me in my play and how to improve my swing.

TURNING PROFESSIONAL When turning 21 I had a handicap of +3.4 and I finally turned professional. I started to play the Spanish circuit, which was the Peugeot Tour.

Advised by Rivero, I soon got my first victory at the Golf Club Sevilla in March 2005.

In May 2006, while playing the Spanish circuit, I received an invitation to play a Challenge Tour event at the Morson International Challenge in Manchester, which I won. Getting this first victory gave me the rights to play the full Challenge Tour during the remainder of the year. I finished on18th place in 2006, which earned me my European Tour card for 2007.

Even though I had earned my card, the category I had obtained gave me limited access to the second level of the Tour. As a result, I went to the qualifying school at San Roque Club where I improved my card category. Now I could start playing golf for real.

Spanish mortgage news in May 12-month Euribor, the base rate used for most mortgages in Spain, came in at -0.188 in May, a fraction higher than the month before, but 48% lower than the same month last year, which is what counts when it comes to annually resetting mortgages.

As a result, borrowers in Spain with annually resetting Spanish mortgages will see their mortgage payments fall by around €3 per month for a typical €120,000 loan with a 20 year term.

Euribor’s downward trend deep into negative territory looks like it has run its course, as you can see from the chart above. Having fallen every month between September 2016 and December 2017 Euribor has remained unchanged or risen in four of the last five months.

Interest rates have a long way to rise if they are going to reach normal territory, as you can see from the chart below. But with Italy and Spain in political turmoil and with large public deficits, it’s unlikely that the ECB will raise rates significantly anytime soon.

For now, though, the long period of falling rates appears to have come to an end.

That said, money is still as cheap as it has ever been, and it looks like a good time to take out a long-term, fixedinterest rate mortgage to lock in today’s cheap cost of borrowing. If interest rates, inflation, and Spanish property prices rise (as they are), buying a Spanish home today with a fixed-rate mortgage could turn out to be a good investment.

New Spanish mortgage lending up 2.3% in March New residential mortgage lending increased in March by 2.3% to 23,147 new loans, a much lower rate of growth than has been the norm in recent months, probably due to seasonality. The average new loan in March was €134,623, up 1.7% compared to last year. Whilst new mortgage lending keeps growing, house prices will keep rising.

El Cid Bowls Club Brian Tibble Memorial 3 Wood Mixed Trips 2018 The day started with the reading of a lovely message from Jane Tibble apologizing for her enforced absence due to health issues and wishing all entrants an enjoyable day. Some close competition throughout the day. 3 Group winners and one best runner up through to the semi final after a lunch break. First semi seeing Ros Dingle, Clive

Bidel and Alan Ferrand beat Betty Anderson, Richard Chamberlain (BBC) and Paul Trunchion.

In the other semi Cori King, Jack Coburn and Graham King beat Stuart Norris, Geraldine Scutt and Floyd Williams. Then a close final saw the result go to Alan Ferrand and team.

Presentations immediately afterwards, made by the Club President Jim Sissens.

To Paul Trunchion for donating the Bottles to 12 prize winners and to Stewart Beattie - Captain and his Vice Captain Paul Trunchion for organising the Competition. Thanks also to Tony Carroll who was the Umpire of the day.

Over 90% of entrants remained for free nibbles.

72 Bowlers split into 24 teams turned out to take part in the annual ‘Dave Sackman Memorial 3-2-1’ competition.

The format is 4 groups of 6 teams playing in a round robin contest, the winners of each group play in a semi-finals knockout to arrive at the last 2 teams standing. Each team had to play 6 ends of Triples, 6 ends of Pairs and 6 ends of Singles, 2 extra points were up for grabs for shot difference advantage.

At stake was the Trophy and Cash Prize for the winners and Cash Prizes for the runners-up and beaten semi-finalists. The 4 teams who made it to the Semis were Bonalba team SANTOS (Roli and Evie Bell plus Geoff Dowson), OLD COBBERS (Peter Shaw, Graham Marshall and Richard Day, JGBC), OPAL ROLLERS (Matt Taylor, Joe Schulein and Brian Walker, JGBC) and lastly the MOTHER CLUCKERS (Carol and Ken

PRESIDENTS CUP COMPETITION - OLIVA NOVA It was a very overcast morning when we started out, on the President’s Cup competition, and we had 41 members and guests for the competition, Our guests today were John Impey and Martin Dunkley, and both were welcomed by our Captain Mr David Phillips.

The course has almost recovered from the spring treatment, and the greens had improved immensely from the previous week.

The winners of the President’s Cup were as follows:1st Place with a net 68 off a handicap of 11.8 was John Guest.

2nd Place with a net 73 off a handicap of 11.4 was Steve Patton 3rd Place with a net 73 off a handicap of 14.3 was Colin Foster.

The MOTHER CLUCKERS beat the OPAL ROLLERS by 6-2 points to earn their Finals place and SANTOS took down the OLD COBBERS by 7 points to 1. After a brief respite, the Finalists took to the green for the last time to battle it out.

In the Triples, the MOTHER CLUCKERS won out by 9 shots to 3, in the Pairs they were also triumphant by 10 shots to 1, when it came to the Singles SANTOS managed to steal the 2 points by 4 shots to 3.

So the MOTHER CLUCKERS (don’t try saying that when you’ve had a drink or two!!!) won by a comfortable 6-2 points.

Dave Sackman was an ardent supporter of Javea Green Bowls and worked his socks off for the Club. His Family have been donating a substantial cash sum for 5 years now in honour of his

memory, today the Prizes were presented by Gwen Sackman, Dave’s wife and his son, Stephen Sackman, who flew in from Vietnam on his 60th birthday to be present. To mark the occasion JGBC presented Stephen with a birthday cake to a rousing chorus of ‘Happy Birthday to You’ plus commemorative Club badges for him and his Mum. This popular annual event is supported by the local Northern Costa Blanca Clubs, BBC, El Cid and Bonalba plus a good turnout of teams from JGBC. After all the Hullabaloo and photo calls, it was time to tuck into some wellearned grub, so thanks are due to Jan, our resident caterer. For 3 days the bar staff worked flat out to keep us all fed and watered, well done Christine, Matt and Brian. Last but not least thanks go to Keith and Dee Hamilton for a splendidly organised competition, their hard work is much appreciated.
