Fake sports kit seized in Benidorm raids by Andy Mansall

However in a further two stores, the search proved more difficult as the counterfeit products were hidden away from the sales areas. In one of the shops, officers discovered a hidden trapdoor in the floor, leading to a basement

storage room without electricity. After a two hour torchlight search, they discovered fake garments hidden, behind objects of furniture, whilst in the other store, the counterfeit items were hidden amongst dustbins in black garbage bags. The four store owners could not provide proof of origin of the sports clothing or certification of trademark, so were arrested as alleged perpertrators of a crime against industrial property.

Former mayor passes away JUAN Ramon Varo Devesa, who twice sat as mayor in El Campello, died last weekend at the age of 71. Mr Devesa held office in the Marina Baixa town from 1995 to 2003 and then again from 2004 to 2011. He was a prominent local Partido Popular politician and was also a provincial deputy for the party. Additionally he was the president of several local companies and was associated with various public institutes. His political career ended in controversy when two years ago he was disqualified from holding public office after not fully helping with a political enquiry. by Simon Russell

Queen of Spain could attend Benidorm conference Organisers of a nine-day June conference attended by 300 delegates living with deafblindness, at Benidorm’s Hotel Bali, are hopeful that Queen Letizia will visit for at least one day. Fasocide, the Spanish federation of Deafblind associations, has announced that the spanish monarch will be patron of honour of this year’s event and has shown interest in attending and even addressing conference if “the agenda allows it” Under the patronage of the Queen, with the theme of, ‘Our rights, our voices, we lead the way’, this year’s 11th Helen Keller world deafblind conference, held from June 19th to 27th, will focus on strengthening the human rights of people with deafblindness throughout the world.

The conference, which will have representatives from 30 different countries attending, will conclude on June 27th, International Deafblindness Day, with a march to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the death of American activist Dame Helen Keller. Estimates suggest that more than 2.75 million worldwide and 6000 Spanish people live with Deafblindness, which, because of its visual and auditory sensory deficiencies poses ‘unique communication difficulties and special needs’ for sufferers. A team of Guardia Civil officers recently made coordinated raids on a number of Benidorm retail outlets, seizing 528 items of counterfeit sportswear with a street value of 26,000 euros. Mark of approval BENIDORM’S new skate park has met with the full approval of the Valencian Skating Federation after a recent inspection. The tests gauge the facilities suitability for competitive skating at national and local level, all of which were met; these include safety, layout, size and regulatory protections. The mayor, Toni Perez, has said this reinforces the town halls belief that the park is not only one of the best in the region but in all of Spain. The park cost €189,000 and is part of the town’s overall plans to promote sports, both the mainstream and more minor ones, many of which,

Urban sounds on the beach INITIAL details have been announced of the Reggaeton Beach Festival which is being held in Benidorm on 19 July and expected to attract about 15,000 people. The first big name to be confirmed is Puerto Rico’s Bad Bunny, a worldwide star in the urban and reggaeton music scene. The festival is expected to feature about a dozen big name artists and the line-up will be announced progressively. WTF ON THE BEACH?

was just pondering what to write about when a news story on the radio very kindly offered up some inspiration (along with a certain amount of perspiration). Benidorm will soon have free wifi on its beaches, a spokesperson from the town hall was boasting. And really good internet too. Checked by those lovely guys at Google. Well what a relief eh? No need to pack the buckets and spades or snorkels or those novels that friends have raved about. Everyone can lie on their towel and Tweet, Facebook and Instagram about the lovely holiday they are having with their beloved phone. The kids can watch The Little Mermaid or Shark´s Tale instead of having to actually pretend to be mermaids or sharks. Maybe I am over reacting (assuming that you have detected my sarcasm) but let´s face it for anyone who actually needs to send an urgent Whatsapp whilst on holiday there´s always a café with free wifi two minutes from the beach. Benidorm Spotlight applauds the move as helping disabled people. “No longer any need to make your way to a bar that has wifi or be chained to your hotel. You can now head down to the beach with your mobile device (mobile phone or tablet) and hey presto! You’re online!” Is it just me, or is this not just a tad

patronising to disabled people? I don´t mean just the explanation of a mobile device, I mean the whole shebang. I am pretty sure that most wheelchair users don´t struggle too much to get to bars along the flat streets of Benidorm (and surely more than any of us know what a mobile device is, as you and I know that we are not actually talking about wheel chairs here!) It is both sad and dangerous that we suffer this world of impatient instant gratification, being bombarded by technology and allowing it to happen to ourselves. If we can´t unplug at the beach then where can we? Just Tibetan monasteries? Many believe that fast communication makes our lives easier but it´s well documented that adults are suffering from stress, sleep loss and depression because of modern technology. Artificial light from TV and computer screens affects melatonin production and throws off circadian rhythms meaning we don´t sleep properly. Nor, in my opinion, do we socialise properly any more. Someone´s birthday? Slap a message on Facebook. Don´t call and actually find out how they are. I often have lunch with a friend, Hugh Robertson who is a retired London corporate lawyer (he normally pays!) and is a writer of historical fiction (The Fool´s Crowns). Hugh feels that living in an instant world negates time for thinking things through.He remembers being a messenger after school and enjoying the camaraderie of face to face deliveries, and later on unwieldy telex and faxes. “The use

of fax gave rise to the imposition of shorter response deadlines but it was still a medium that permitted a considered response. But then the goalposts were moved dramatically as email took over rather like a version of Japanese Knotweed. Almost overnight it seemed that there was no escape from email demanding, even commanding, an instant response. The precious thinking time was often replaced by instant reaction committed to permanency in a moment. How often have we all fallen foul of a later regretted impulse response or even worse the mistakenly misdirected email? This is a potentially fatal flaw in instantly available communication. We used to discuss things with a colleague but that does not seem to remain an option.” Hugh remembers the days when his first boss would send himself notes via postcards (to his office) on his way home from his Club. That reliable service and “sleeping on it” allowed some thought to take place. Hugh and I often spend lunches swapping Trump jokes and trying to laugh at the man´s tweets in the middle of the night (not that I am saying that Trump is actually capable of meaningful thought of course).

History on the wall Punks for charity THE first phase of works aiming to improve the visibility of the Tossal de la Cala archaeological site has been completed. Heritage Councillor Ana Pellicer introduced the wall murals which can be seen from as far away as the beach, hopefully encouraging tourists and locals alike to come and visit the area. The murals depict the Celtic style shields that would have typically been used in the Iberian Peninsula during the Roman occupation, the period which the site dates back to.

Maths marathon L’ARABI secondary school in l’Alfas del Pi was one of the venues for the XXIX Mathematical Olympiad, along with schools in Elche, Mutxamel and Petrer. There were over 200 students at the Alfas School, all from the Marina Alta and Marina Baixa. The participants were tested in groups based on age over three cycles, with the best going 30 on to the provincial phase of the Olympiad on 21 April in

Orihuela. From there the top eight will go on to the Valencian final in Castellon on 26 and 27 May. The top three from this will go on to the grand finale, the Spanish National Olympiad. Despite its competitive edge the Olympiad was devised to create an enjoyment of maths and problem solving in general amongst youngsters.

Tinsa Spanish House Price Index

The Spanish house price index published by Tinsa – one of Spain’s biggest appraisal companies – also shows house price changes by area, with the big cities (mainly Barcelona and Madrid) up 5.9% in February, the Mediterranean coast up 4.4%, and the Balearic and Canary Islands up 6.8%. With house prices rising across the board, many Spaniards will now see property as a good investment again, These national indices don’t tell us which is likely to attract more buyers.

Yorkshire Pride Gerona Lights Are Back On

fter a string of delays due to unforeseen construction problems, Tad Dawson and daughter Paige are all smiles today, Thursday 12 April, for the re-opening of Yorkshire Pride 1 Calle Gerona. Tad explained to me this morning that his new state of the art kitchen will reduce waiting times to an almost instant turn-around from what used to be up to one hour waiting time for your food. A problem caused by the shear volume of visitors wanting to enjoy the famous size portions and incredible range of traditional British dishes.

The refurbishment has included an extension to what was already two premises with the take over of the next door unit; which has been knocked though making a larger bar and kitchen area. The decor is modernised with hugesized screens and even Jagermeister light fittings. Tad said: “To be honest the amount of work has been incredible, we have gone beyond what was expected as far as a complete new re-wire, soundproof and upgrade to everything. There is absolutely everything new we stopped at nothing to make this the best bar around”. Looking around I could see what a transformation has occurred here; not only the inside but also the look of the outside it’s going to be a landmark and stand out. This area and especially the site on the famous cross roads - with Tiki City and Andy’s Simply The Best Bar, also extremely popular places to visit - there has

been an amazing amount of new bars and refurbishments going on in recent years but one of the most famous and original British favourites bars has been the Yorkshire Pride since 1993. In 25 years, the anniversary was on March 26th, Tad has made his mark on the town with not just the success in Calle Gerona but also with four more bars that include the Yorkshire Pride 2 & 3 located in Calle Londres and Avenida del Doctor Severo Ochoa 34, and the Why Not Bar and Queen Vic, which are also in Calle Gerona. The secret to the success of Yorkshire Pride Pubs are the traditional food that comes in massive sized portions with a few famous dishes like the Sunday Roast, Hungry Man’s Breakfast and the Mixed Grill. What has also been one of the most amazing facts about Tad and his team is the participation with the British Fiestas since November 1994 when the Wooky Hollow that was the original bar which started the fiestas. People came from all over the UK each year to party. Tad had his first year in 1994 when he had the spill over from Wookey Hollow situated directly opposite. Since then every year is has become bigger and bigger to a point when now the event has spread completely across the British area of Benidorm from one end of Calle Gerona to the other. Tad’s success in running bars has also been down to the free and easy atmosphere; with some well known music acts making the Yorkshire Pride a popular evening Entertainment spot. Even on Christmas Day, the Yorkshire Pride team makes the day special for hundreds of visitors who come back year after year and a sell out in all three bars.

To show his appreciation and loyalty to his staff, Tad has for many years taking the team on holiday in a short closed period in the winter; after the busy season and end of year celebrations. Benidorm and the Yorkshire Pride are like eggs and bacon and will continue to serve each other proud for many years to come.
