NEW BRIDGE FOR ALBIR TO AID CONGESTION by Andy Mansall
The green light to begin construction work on a new bridge spanning the Barranco Soler stream, which currently prevents traffic flow along Calle San Miguel in Albir, has been given by Alfas del Pi town hall. An act of redefinition of land has been passed by councillors, allowing work on the project to start, with an estimated four month completion period. Town planning officer Toni Such visited the site earlier this week, explaining that once completed the bridge, which has a projected cost of 385,000 euros, will help to ease congestion on both the N332 and Cami Vell Altea roads, which bear the brunt of traffic travelling between Altea and Benidorm. Benidorm’s tallest building set for occupation by Andy Mansall
Four years on from completion, Spain’s highest residential building will finally see its first homeowners. Sales of the 269 apartments and duplexes in Benidorm’s Intempo building, which has dominated the city skyline over the last few years, will begin this summer. New owners of the iconic skyscraper, which has been the subject of much speculation, rumour and curiosity over the last few years, have released plans to complete the final construction, allowing for occupation within twelve months. Sources close to American based investment company SVP Global have revealed plans to market the properties using a formula popular in New York, using the name of the building as an emblematic icon. At 192 metres high, Intempo,
dwarfing the other tall buildings around it, has come to represent the instability of Spain’s construction industry following the 2008 financial crisis. Work originally began on the forty seven floor structure in 2007, with a completion date of two years. However, the project soon became embroiled in controversy and financial turmoil, beset by design flaws and construction problems. When original owners and promoters, Alicante based Olga Urbana, filed for bankruptcy in 2014, they left 137 creditors with debts amounting to 147 million euros. With its two distinctive towers designed like an ‘M’ and topped by a cone shaped ruby, the glass fronted monolith has created much debate and rumour amongst the local community. Unfounded reports that
the building’s elevators only reached two thirds of the way to the top, were proved to be false, but rumours persisted. The new owners, who purchased the building for 60 million euros last Autumn and will market the properties in partnership with valencia based promoters, Net de Gerrers, have confirmed that the building is in good condition and 93% complete. Whilst revealing plans to modify and improve the final structure, the company have not released prices for the apartments, although these are expected to be around the market average of 2,500 euros per square metre. When the first residents eventually move in next year, they will be living in the tallest building outside of Madrid and Spain’s highest residential structure.

More Benidorm beach police proposed in summer budget
New Bridge From Front Page... Currently, the Calle San Miguel road is blocked by the Barranco Soler stream, splitting access from the roundabout at the top of Avenida Albir in the North, to the Albir centro salud and football stadium in the South,

causing severe traffic jams on the other access roads, particularly at peak times. Once the two sides of the road are linked by the bridge, through traffic from Benidorm to Altea
and vice versa, will not be required to enter the centre of Albir. Constructed from a single concrete slab, with biopoyed supports at the sides, the bridge will also have pedestrian pavements, street lighting and metal handrails.
Let the waters flow Opposition parties in Benidorm, led by Ciudadanos have called for an extra police presence on the city’s beaches during the three peak months of summer. The proposals, put forward by opposition leader Juan Balastegui last week, seek for provision of the extra security presence to be included in the summer budget currently being considered by the city council. During August of last year around twelve local police officers were injured when they confronted a group of around 20 illegal vendors operating on

Benidorm’s Levante Beach. The altercation on the beach occurred after the city hall implemented a clamp down on the unlawful beach vendors selling food, drinks, fake items such as watches and unlicensed masseurs plying their trade to sunbathers and resulted in jail sentences for two of the protaganists. Following the incident, extra police were drafted in to increase beach security during the remainder of the summer season. Balastegui, believes the proposals, backed by trade
union officials, will cost around 130,000 euros to implement, but insisted they would, “Improve the image of Benidorm ….. not just for a few weeks, but for the three months of summer.” The measures now under consideration by the town hall, would see not only a clamp down on illegal beach traders, but also target petty thieves who prey on tourists and the pea men operating on Levante beach promenade, bringing, “Tranquillity to tourists, by deterring criminals”, said the councillor.
THE works to clean and by Simon Russell clear the Barranc dels Arcs in the Altea municipality has now been completed. The works had been approved by the Department of the Environment and the buildup of bamboo and other vegetation that clogs the important run off for excess water. Poor maintenance of areas such as this has been blamed in the past for flooding in some towns along the Costa Blanca. When this debris dries out it also increases the risk of forest fires spreading quickly.

2500 townspeople within its new boundaries. Those who will most benefit from the hospital at home service apart from the elderly are those with terminal illnesses or severe mobility issues, which cause difficulties in travel between home and hospital,
often meaning they receive no treatment whatsoever. Many of the additional towns of Confrides, Beniarda, Benimantell, Benifato, Guadalest, Bollula and Tarbena are more than an hours travelling distance from the Marina Baixa unit. The hospital at home unit, which now provides medical cover to
eighteen towns, consists of four doctors, ten nurses and a clinical assistant. No further personnel will be employed to take on the extended service as current staff will receive extra training and be utilised within a restructured unit, following new routines. The first priority of the new
service is to determine the specific needs of patients within the added towns who require treatment at home. Health director, Dr Rosa Louis Cerecada, explained the primary goal of the unit was to, “ Take advantage of all the resources and improve the organisation to avoid a single patient having a bad experience at home.”
The hospital at home unit, based at the Marina Baixa hospital in Villajoyosa has extended its radius to include seven inland mountain towns. This vital service, which predominantly provides palliative medical treatment to elderly and reduced mobility patients in their own homes, will serve an extra

Terrace talks BENIDORM Town Council has convened a round table to once again address the issue of terraces outside bars and restaurants. They are trying to strike the balance between members of the public who want to sit outside, so helping trade, and pedestrians, cyclists and the disabled who find the terraces an impediment. M a n y establishments are still continually placing chairs and tables in non-designated areas as well as putting out more chairs than permitted. The other issue is the noise emanating from large outside groups in residential areas,

especially at night and during siesta hours. Councillors Ana Pellicer and Jose Gonzalez de Zarate are heading up the forum which has been given a month to put forward
workable proposals that can be implemented before the summer months. The first meeting was held last week with representatives of residents associations and hostelries, both armed with feedback on the pros and cons of terraces.

Elderly swimmer saved by Simon Russell
APRIL is still a bit early for most people to go into the sea and a plucky 87-year-old had to be rescued after getting into trouble swimming off Benidorm’s Levante Beach earlier this week. Lifeguards were alerted that the man had got into difficulties at about 11am
last Monday. He was taken ashore and given emergency medical treatment as he wasn’t breathing and appeared to have swallowed water. A medical team were also at the scene by now and thankfully they were able to resuscitate the man who was taken to hospital for further examination in light of his age.
Many Costa Blanca beaches only have a skeleton lifeguard service or none at all in the period between Easter and the summer, so always be aware of this if you or your family are planning to go for a swim. The waters can also still be surprisingly cold when you get a little way offshore, so again be cautious as cold water can be very energy sapping.

Osborne bull graffiti ‘clean up’ falls foul of EU rules Ready for the summer Members of a cultural heritage group who painted over graffiti inscribed on two of Spain’s famous Osborne bull hoardings, have been questioned by EU officials over whether they received permission to perform the cover up. The two iconic roadside monuments, one 7 metres and one 14 metres in height, situated alongside the N332 trunk road in the vicinity of El Campello, on the outskirts of Alicante city were cleaned up by activists last week. However the group have since received correspondence from the EU asking who gave them permission to perform the clean up on national monuments. President of the La Agrupacion Cultural MEC, who carried out the act, Jesus Planelles, whilst stressing
by Andy Mansall
that his members had simply covered over the graffiti with black paint, said, “ The Osborne Bull has a history worthy of respect and promotion ….. although its original function was advertising, with the passage of time and cultural roots, it has become a cultural symbol of Spain.” The black ‘silhouette of a bull in semi profile’, roadside hoardings first appeared in 1956, as part of an advertising campaign organised by the Osborne sherry company to promote it’s Veterano ‘brandy de Jerez’ brand. Earlier versions of the silhouettes were seven metres in height, but later ones were doubled to 14 metres, when advertising hoardings were required to be at least 150 metres from the roadside.
As part of a drive to ban advertising of alcohol in 1994, the bulls were due to be dismantled. However, a public led campaign resulted in the 91 hoardings, spread throughout Spain, to be retained, on the grounds of ‘aesthetic or cultural significance’ to the country, providing the advertising slogans were covered. The total black silhouette is the one we see today and the one which the MEC group wished to recreate by covering the graffiti on the El Campello bulls. Planelles was keen to point out that in painting over the graffiti which had slogans such as ‘machismo kills’ and references to animal cruelty, the group was in no way against the sentiments expressed by the words, in fact, on the contrary

Tis the season to eat tapas but the miniscule kitchen that David has to be a genius in is astonishing. As is the range of hand soaps when you get to the loo (about 20 – I´d never heard of a soap fetish before!) The only dish that I wouldn´t recommend was a tomato “temblado” starter that my friend ordered which comes with pesto ice cream and bacon bits. Too weird for me but it does demonstrate how funky this fabulous little restaurant is. Book on 96 642 47 67 or 699 907 051. Find it on the Carrer de les Escoles, opposite the primary school.

ast weekend a friend took me to lunch in one of the most extraordinary restaurants I have ever been to. On being handed the menu after five minutes of studying it in stunned silence I declared “This is a nightmare! I want everything!” My chum chuckled and said “I thought this place would shut you up for once!” Tapas I Vins is located ten minutes from Denia, in the village of La Xara, with a modest red exterior that does nothing to imply the heaven or more specifically manna from heaven to be found within. The menu is crammed with creative concoctions that will renew faith in tapas in even those most jaded by meatballs and tortilla. The chef at Tapes I Vins fuels this restaurant with a passion and imagination for food combinations that normally one would expect to only receive at the hand of some culinary god in Madrid or Barcelona. I was excited as I might have been sitting in El Bulli, minus the price tags. The ordering was tough though. I felt like Meryl Streep in the film Sophie´s Choice. My friend ordered “morcilla” (black pudding) toasted on the plancha, resulting in a really lovely texture, and foie gras on toast which literally melted in the mouth. I chose squid which came decorated in crunchy morcilla crisps, and very tasty breaded artichoke hearts with guacamole. For our puds we had a kind of deconstructed lemon meringue pie, and a perfect Tiramisu. Great name for a kitten or a puppy that, by the way, should you
need one. Tiramisu means “pick me up” in Italian. We enjoyed the house rose, but the wine list is impressive and reasonable. The tapas I think are priced very fairly. Some dishes are only 5 euros, going up to 22 euros for “solomillo” with foie gras, with most designed to be shared. There is a very popular daily “menu del dia” for 19 euros

direct from his Pedreguer factory. Check it out at www.heladospalacio.com. I found myself wondering who invented ice-cream in the first place. According to Google an ice-cream-like food was first
eaten in China in 618-97 AD. King Tang of Shang had 94 “ice men” who helped to make a dish using buffalo milk, flour and camphor! The explorer Marco Polo (12541324) is believed to have seen ice-creams being made during his trip to China and introduced them to Italy after his travels in China. The King of England, Charles I, is thought to have offered his chef £500 a year (wads of cash) to keep his ice-cream recipe a secret from the “plebs!” You see, this is why I don´t like Kings and Queens stuff, despite The Crown on Netflix….why would a King not want a Mr Whippy van? Ice-cream sundaes were invented when it became illegal to sell ice-cream sodas on for which the chef does the hard part and selects 4 tapas of the day for you. Chef and owner David Castello established the restaurant 11 years ago and is surprisingly self-taught. “I do have 390 cookery books thought” he told me, grinning. “Including Gordon Ramsey and Jamie Oliver of course!” Popping to the loo at Tapes y Vins you´ll go past David´s kitchen and your jaw will drop. Not even a vet could swing a cat in there. Which would be a health hazard anyway of course
Speaking of weird and wonderful icecreams did you know you can do a degree in ice-cream with the most prestigious course in Spain conducted by Alicante University? As well as presumably being more fun than almost all other degrees it can pay off (quick, kids, tell your parents!) This week I was introduced to a young guy who lives in my village who in February won first prize in a national competition for “artesano” ice-cream producers, putting him firmly on the map. Oscar Palacio from “Helados Artesanos Palacio” in Pedreguer beat 49 other ice-cream makers from all over Spain with his “Roasted Apple Cake with Toasted White Chocolate” flavour. By the end of this month we will all be able to partake of this awardwinning ice-cream at the “heladerias” and restaurants that Palacio stocks; Café Glace in Calpe, The Ice-Cream Factory in Altea and Ca Maca in Jalon to name three. Tubs of his all-natural ice creams (choose from 50 flavours if you can!) can be bought
a Sunday in the American town of Evanston during the late 19th century. Requiring a loop hole some traders replaced the soda with syrup and called the dessert an “Ice Cream Sundae.” Replacing the “y” with an “e” was done to avoid upsetting religious types. I wonder if it did! And finally, some joy from Syria. A Syrian called Ernest Hamwi is said to have invented the ice-cream cone! During a fair in America in 1904 Ernest´s waffle booth was next to an ice-cream seller who ran out of containers. As a favour, Hamwi rolled a waffle to hold his ice-cream and thus the good old cone was born. fiona@weekender.news

Roman recreation weekend returns to Villajoyosa by Andy Mansall
History buffs in Villajoyosa are in for a treat this weekend as the Festum Alonis Roman historical recreation festival returns to the town. Now in its seventh year, the festival will step back in time to the years between 29 BC and 19 BC, when the Roman legion based in the area was preparing to fight the Cantabrian Wars. The popular event is a joint collaboration between Villajoyosa town hall and the Hispania Roman Cultural Association, which holds historical recreation festivals throughout Spain. Festum Alonis is the first event on the annual calendar for the Hispania association and is normally attended by historical recreation lovers from all over the country.
22nd April, visitors will be able to immerse themselves in the activities of a Roman legion preparing for battle, with participants dressed in authentic reinterpretations of clothing from the period. The free festival begins on Saturday morning at 10.00h and 11.00h, in the town’s Vilamuseu, when news is delivered of the wreck of the Bou Ferrer boat. This will be followed at 12.30h by a talk from Nestor F Marques, an expert on Roman culture, who will also be signing copies of his book, ‘A Year in ancient Rome’. Later in the day, between 17.00h and 20.00h visitors to the Torre de Sant Josep and Castra site, will be able to witness the

for the first time this year, aspects of Roman civilian life, with explanations given by guides in English. These will include children’s games, a demonstration of fabric making using a traditional loom and at 18.30h a recreation of a Roman baptism. On Sunday the action moves to the Torres beach area between 11.00h and 12.30h when a recreation entitled ‘Death in Rome’ will show a traditional burial ceremony including authentic music of the time and a procession to the Torre de Sant Josep. GARDENING ON THE COSTA BLANCA 35 Going back to the concept of ‘beneficial insects’, an important aspect of organic gardening is biocontrol. This employs the use of beneficial insects, as well as companion
planting, to naturally repel or control pest populations. As chemical pesticides are indiscriminate, they tend to kill beneficial insects, as well as the pests. This can cause an
imbalance between the number of pests and that of their natural predators, leading to waves of different pests invading the now insect-free area. Another important point to
take into consideration when deciding whether to use chemicals or natural solutions is that large numbers of insects are starting to show signs of immunity against com-

mercial pesticides. Some insects, such as the Parasitic Wasps below are produced on an industrial scale, for release in fields and greenhouses as a pest control.
Parasitic wasps (Hymenoptera)
Hoverflies (Diptera)
Ladybirds (Coleoptera)
These wasps of the family Ichneumonidae do not sting. They lay their eggs on or in other insects. Although their life cycle is gruesome - after the egg hatches, the parasitoid larva eats the host alive before emerging as an adult - these insects have an important role to play. They kill enormous numbers of garden pests, from brassica-munching
Often confused with wasps because of their similar yellow and black colouring. However, unlike wasps, hoverflies also do not sting (nor do they have long antennae or a bulgy abdomen with a wasp waist). More than 85 species have been found in a single garden. The adult hoverfly feeds on nectar and pollen and their larvae are voracious
Ladybirds are known to everyone - with regard to the name, it is generally considered likely that bird simply refers to the insect’s winged nature and flying abilities while lady apparently refers to the seven spots of the most common species in Europe which were popularly supposed to symbolize the seven pains of the Virgin Mary. (The Americans call them ladybugs but, technically, they are not bugs either!) These beetles are carnivores, feeding almost exclusively on aphids (green and black fly)

Spanish home sales rise 18% in February as market recovery continues www.spanishpropertyinsight.com
There were 37,412 Spanish home sales inscribed in the Land Register in February, and 41,480 if you include homes subsidised by the Government, known as VPO, all according to the latest figures from the National Institute of Statistics (INE), based on sales inscribed in the Land Registry. Home sales have grown by double digits in most months since March 2014, when the Spanish housing market recovery started. That said, sales are still down by 44% compared to the peak year of 2007. Sales in the boom years were exaggerated and
unsustainable, so not a normal benchmark, but there still looks like room for more growth. Bear in mind these figures lag are based on sales inscribed in the Land Register, not sales completed in the month. As such they lag the market by a few months. More timely figures from the Association of Spanish Notaries for home sales that took place in February were up 2.7%. New home and resale transactions were up 17% and 16% respectively in February, showing that the recover is now firing on both pistons, having relied almost exclusively on resales
between the start of the recovery in 2013 and May last year. New home sales have increased by double digits almost every month for the last year, driven by the recovery in demand for new homes in Spain. Looking at the evolution of sales by region with a focus on areas that attract foreign buyers in significant numbers, year to date sales have increased strongly almost everywhere except Extremadura (where foreign demand is not a big part of the picture) and Catalonia, where the constitutional crisis and political uncertainty are discouraging foreign buyers. Sales
were up 59% in Castellรณn province, home to the Costa del Azahar, in what looks like the first signs of recovery in a coastal market that has suffered the crisis
longer and harder than most. The overall picture is one of surging sales in most areas of Spain that attract foreigners in significant numbers, with the exception
of the Catalan provinces of Barcelona, Girona, and Tarragona. But even in those regions sales were positive, despite the political turbulence.

Perhaps because of this background the lack of policing of the internet really bugs me. Last year You Tube displayed a film clip of a suicide victim in Japan. Hate speech is illegal across Europe so how can it be acceptable online? Says Hugh “So last week we saw the founder of Facebook sitting on a booster cushion being grilled about the very ethos of his fortune making baby. That Mark Zuckerberg looks so like a teenage class swot only added to the bathos and irony as he was caught up in questions many of which seemed utterly naive particularly when set against his smooth answers crafted and instilled in him by his cohort of sharp suited 1000$ an hour attorneys and PR people.” Zuckerberg looked patronising as an

Will that mean that the other giants of the web all find themselves having to take a responsibility that surely must be theirs? Fingers crossed. fiona@weekender.news

Points were still hard to come by for the 2nd week running as the Alfaz Fantasy Football League hurtles towards a conclusion with only 5 weeks to go.The 9 Premier League games gave the Fantasy League 27 goals,3 clean sheets,33 yellow cards and I’m pleased to report no red ones although there were a couple of really bad tackles by Chelsea’s Alonso and Spur’s Ben Davies in which they were both lucky not to receive their marching orders. Well, the Premier League title may have been won but the battle for the 24th A.F.F.L. goes on with Darren’s team Daz XI strengthening their advantage at the top to a formidable 61 points over Pauline’s Vodka Army.Joe’s Keith Lard F.C., Ryan’s My Gylfi Pleasure and Dominic’s Barnsley Braves all remain in the same positions as last week while the only movers in the top ten are Peter’s team The Irons and Tony’s team Northern Blues who both climbed up a couple of places to 7th & 8th.At the other end of the table, Laura’s Legends have been rooted at the bottom since week 5 and are showing no signs of recovery as they are now well behind Reggie’s Rejects by 76 points. Our Mark Carter Ladies Section is very much done & dusted with Pauline’s Vodka Army marching away with it so now the jostling goes on for the runners-up spot between The Bluebells, Ceasar’s Blackcats, Mrs.Max & Paddy and Borobabe with only 29 points between them. At the moment
The Bluebells have moved back into 2nd place after dropping down to 4th last week. Down at the foot of the table, it’s the same as the Main League with Laura’s Legends waiting for the trap door to open. Wade’s team Alli Barber are beginning to feel the pressure at the top of our U.K.T.V.SPAIN Junior League after reaching the Summit 3 weeks ago. Robbie’s Tea & Busquets are back in contention after 9 weeks away from the 3 they have moved back into 2nd place and are only 19 points behind the leaders and 2 points ahead of George’s team I Love Heather. Harley’s Ginger Ninjar are still holding all our Junior Managers up at the bottom and have now slipped behind Gian Luca’s Messi or Tidy by 51 points. Wayne team Two Years Running, Maybe have been untouchable in our Golden Boot League and at one time had an incredible 85 point advantage which as now been whittled down to only 36 points by Darren’s Daz XI. Last Season Dave’s Juke Box Mackems blew it as the Season unfolded and allowed Walkden Town to win it and same could happen this Year. Down at the bottom of this section Len’s team, Nelson’s Flagship is still in choppy waters even though they have moved off the bottom spot courtesy of his 2 strikers Arsenal’s Lacazette & Manchester City Jesus who both scored at the weekend to take his team above Laura’s Legends. Four teams will go into our Monthly
wine draw and they are our top scoring team which was Chris’s Anirtak Hotspurs who clocked up 45 points with a little help from Crystal Palace’s tricky little winger Wilfried Zaha who scored a brace of goals in Palace’s vital win against local rivals Brighton. The other 3 teams joining them are our lowest scoring teams who finished up with a big fat Zero and they are Simon’s Albrighton Beautiful, Maxine’s Plaistowe13Hammers and Steve’s Altea Autos. Manager of the Month for April is being kindly sponsored by John & Wilma at the Orange Tree in Albir who provide a sumptuous Menu at reasonable prices. With 2 weeks gone Chris’s Anirtak Hotspurs have jumped to the top of the pile after a good week and taken a 5 point lead over Old Salfordians. Last weeks leaders Crap on a Canary have dropped to 3rd & are level on points with Lee’s Pineapple Chunks Breakfast for 2 at the Bar Code in Alfaz this week has been won by Macca’s Albir Villains who moved up 28 places from 128th to 100th position. Next week our F.A.Cup League is up and running again with the Semi-Finals of the F.A.Cup taking place so make sure you keep an eye on how your teams perform in the crucial weeks ahead by visiting our very popular website and don’t forget to vote for the best name in this Season’s Fantasy by going on our Facebook page.
Rugby La Vila flounder in the sun Soundly beaten in the Santander sunshine by 4th. placed Independente 41-14, the home side showed their quality against, for me, a below par La Vila. Admittedly Independente are strong candidates in the play-offs for the championship, however the away record of the visitors points to the problem they have in set pieces where they continually
by Tony Fox lose both possession and points. They have talent. They always show commitment and tenacity. What they lack is the cohesion of all these qualities. Although 10th placed in the league La Vila are assured to keep their place in the first division. La Vila’s first points came
from a well worked play culminating in a try by Patricio Orduña which was converted by Jara. They did manage another converted try towards the final whistle but this was too little too late. Next Sunday April 22nd. they take on the big cheese that is Quesos Entrepinares current league leaders and probable champions and Copa del Rey
winners. This should be an entertaining afternoons rugby at their home ground in VilaJoyosa well signposted off exit 66 of the Autopista. Entrance is only 5 euros with under 18’s free. Kick off is 12.00. If the sun shines and La Vila make use of their home advantage they could go close in what appears to be an easy task for Entrepinares.

Currently, the Calle San Miguel road is blocked by the Barranco Soler stream, splitting access from the roundabout at the top of Avenida Albir in the North, to the Albir centro salud and football stadium in the South,
by Andy Mansall

causing severe traffic jams on the other access roads, particularly at peak times.

The purpose of the act was to return the bulls to their former status and to
that end he believed that no permission was required to perform the clean up. “ We questioned knowledgeable people who informed us that as the bulls
were of ethnological interest and less than 100 years old, permission would not be required, as we were a cultural group performing the

When they hatch, the ladybird larvae will eat up to 5,000 aphids before they mature. A ladybird can live up to 3 years. Its distinctive shell is often red or orange, and the number of spots can vary from 2 to 18.

“The lack of policing of the internet really bugs me”
millions of Facebook subscribers had been ‘harvested’ without their consent let alone knowledge prompted the summoning of the
the common stance – we are not publishers – we merely passively provide an electronic platform on which others can publish as they wish.Somehow, almost by default it has become accepted that if the providers of the platforms playsuch a passive role they will be protected.”
by Fiona Jennison
During many years of working in television “compliance” lawyers used to visit us production teams and remind us about the swear words we shouldń t permit on TV and how we shouldń t promote products, ie mention sellotape. Or be offensive. Funnily enough, the last time a compliance lawyer turned up to preach to one of my team, my naughty comedian boyfriend was the main star of the lawyeŕ s show reel, and the lawyer clocked him at the back of the room, and didn’t have the nerve to press play. Perhaps because of this background the lack of policing of the internet really bugs me. Last year You Tube displayed a film clip of a suicide victim in Japan. A journalist using traditional media could not have done so. You Tube ignored its own stated guidelines against gory or graphic content despite public outcry and ultimately it was the original creator that removed the clip. The fact that the French President recently declared that giants like Twitter, Google, Facebook and their ilk were too powerful for any single state to tackle is pretty chilling. It seems to me that the Americans hide behind “freedom of speech” way after counting to a hundred. The scandal following the disclosure that the personal information of literally
founder multi billionaire Mark Zuckerman to appear before an investigating committee of Congress. I visited my retired lawyer friend Hugh to grill him on the subject. “This is huge!” says Hugh. “I don´t know if Zuckerman was backed into a corner in front of in the face of 10 hours of questioning by the committee and simply lost his well rehearsed script or has a masterplan for fundamental change in his business model, only time will tell! Newspapers and other media have always been responsible for their content alongside the actual author. They are the publisher and liable as such to be sued for defamation or taken to task for offensive , unacceptable or unlawful content. It was and remains that as publisher they have a responsibility. That they cannot avoid. It is the bold editor who takes the stance ‘Publish and be damned’ attributed to the Duke of Wellington.” says Hugh. “But internet giants all adopted
‘If Facebook’s products are free, how does Facebook make its money?’
Can it be right to allow criminal activities such as bomb making or obscene images of human torture and degradation to be published without any responsibility?
84 year old Senator asked ‘If Facebook’s products are free, how does Facebook make its money?’ The answer delivered with condescension was “Senator, we sell ads.” He thought that made him look innocent, but actually this is not the case. Quite the reverse, if you also sell information about your customers to politicians. Then another apparently simple question was posed to Zuckerberg “Would you be comfortable sharing with us the name of the hotel you stayed in last night?” Slam dunk – he squirmed. As he ducked the question. Given that Facebook knew the precise whereabouts of literally millions of its users the previous night his avoiding that simple question gave the lie to all his other glib answers. He would not put himself in the shoes of the very people who had made him rich and powerful beyond belief. Then came his statement which in time to come may be seen as the defining moment when the unfettered actions of the internet giants began to be tamed. Mark Zuckerberg admitted that he was
Hate speech is illegal across Europe so how can it be acceptable online? Says Hugh “So last week we saw the founder of Facebook sitting on a booster cushion being grilled about the very ethos of his fortune making baby. That Mark Zuckerberg looks so like a teenage class swot only added to the bathos and irony as he was caught up in questions many of which seemed utterly naive particularly when set against his smooth answers crafted and instilled in him by his cohort of sharp suited 1000$ an hour attorneys and PR people.” Zuckerberg looked patronising as an
responsible for the content on Facebook and as founder and principal he was the publisher. We may never know whether he became rattled under the relentless pressure of the hearing and ‘lost the plot’ or if there is a plan to fundamentally change the business model of Facebook. However by that simple statement he put Facebook and to an extent himself into the legal shoes of all publishers.
