Brits Great Escape collapse shocker
FROM FRONT PAGE TWO British men were taken to Torrevieja Hospital on Wednesday morning after the partial collapse of a building in Playa Flamenca imitated a folding pack of cards. Adjoining properties were evacuated, and residents moved to temporary homes, as inquiries started into what caused the drama, which amazingly did not cause any serious injury. The men were rescued by emergency services after the collapse of the duplex

The Brits needed treatment for bruising and shock after the incident when a front wall gave way on the 18-year-old property. Two other people escaped without any injury. One resident said that on hearing a large noise, he told his wife that an earthquake must have struck in the area.

The British man rushed out of the bedroom and said that he discovered a “huge gap” in the wall. The first people on the scene were the Orihuela local police and the Guardia Civil, who witnessed a second collapse of the structure, before pulling out a man from the bottom floor of the building, whilst being aware that the property might totally collapse. Torrevieja firefighters then rescued a man who was trapped in the top floor duplex because the stairwell was blocked. Fire crews from Almoradi and Orihuela also took part in Wednesday’s operation, plus two dogs from Elche’s canine rescue unit to make sure that nobody was trapped in the rubble. Around a dozen buildings in the street
were evacuated as a precaution, with the “all-clear” in terms of the rescue operation coming at around 11.00 am. Orihuela mayor, Emilio Bascuñana, went to the scene along with a parade of other councillors and officials, making a pledge that temporary accommodation would be provided by the authority. Council technicians are investigating the incident, with Bascuñana telling reporters that there was damage to eight homes, and suggested that building work done by one of the residents may have been a factor in what happened, but then added that “he did not want to jump conclusions” before an official report has been produced. Dwellers in some of the evacuated properties claimed that the buildings were not properly finished in the first place, and did not have the appropriate certification which should have been issued back in 2000.

Bad week for Ryanair
Irish budget airline Ryanair was in the news again this week, as a planned cabin crew strike on Friday seems set to go ahead, whilst in the same week, Spanish police were called in to deal with an irate passenger at Malaga Airport. The low-cost airline has failed to convince cabin crew unions to call off the strike planned for Friday, September 28th in Spain, Portugal, Italy, Belgium and the Netherlands, after the Irish carrier met with the unions behind the strike on Monday but was unable to reach a deal. Unions have called the strike to protest against the company’s policy of putting all its workers on Irish labour contracts rather than adhering to local legislation. Representatives say they have “not ruled out” holding a strike every month until Ryanair accepts their demands, which received the backing of the European

The Supreme Court has confirmed the closure of one of the most controversial bars in Benidorm, the Tiki Beach. Located on the seafront of Benidorm’s Levante beach, the bar has been subject to the ongoing controversy between the residents of the building which also houses the Tiki Beach Bar. The residents undertook a judicial battle that has seen the

bar close and reopened. The loud noise and music together with reports of an antisocial atmosphere created by a high concentration of customers visiting the Tiki Beach, mostly foreign tourists, was what the judge gave as his reason to the owners and decreed the closure of the establishment
immediately. A little more than a year and a half ago, in April 2016, the Provincial Court gave the same reason to the owners for the closure of the bar. However, the owners appealed to the Supreme Court to avoid closure. Now, the Supreme Court has rejected the request of the owners. The ruling is firm so there is no recourse to stop the closure of it.
A caretaker on an urbanisation in Alicante has been found guilty of the sexual abuse of a 14-year-old girl. As previously reported in the “Weekender”, the 55-year-old was standing trial accused of touching the child inappropriately. The incident occurred after
he had been asked to go to the girls home to remove a spider, something she had a phobia about. After checking that she was alone he touched her through her shorts, making a comment of a lewd nature. The court heard that the girl asked him to leave and
he did, a mitigating circumstance which meant that he only received a sentence of one year. He was also fined €1,000, not allowed to be in the vicinity of the minor for five years and not allowed any contact with children in a working environment for three months.

Heartbroken girl in turtle plea Toddler dies in freak accident
A 7-year-old girl in the Alicante town of Cox has launched a campaign to find her missing tortoise. “Tortu” went missing earlier this month after wandering off from a patio where she normally lived and hasn’t been seen since. Little Noa has placed handmade posters around the town saying in Spanish “Lost turtle. If found please bring it home.” along with contact details and pictures of Tortu. Foot fetish predator arrested A 27-year-old man has been arrested after being connected to a number of assaults on women and girls. A small Valencian town was rocked at the weekend by the death of an elderly spectator during the annual bull running event. The tragedy happened in Jerica, a town with a population of just 1,500 located in the interior of Castellon. Many admitted they were too embarrassed to report the incident, but police said that the man fitted the profile of a serious sexual predator and his actions could easily have escalated. He is being held without bail awaiting full charges.
A tablet is being blamed for the death of a three-year-old girl in a traffic accident on Monday, when she was travelling in a car with her mother near Vilanova de Arousa in Galicia. Traffic was slowing as there had been an earlier minor accident, but the child’s mother did not notice the situation due to the glare of the early morning sun according to her statement and she ploughed into the back of a school bus. The mother and daughter were both seriously hurt and taken to the local hospital. Due to the extent of her head injuries, the little girl was transferred to the hospital at Santiago de Compostela but sadly died 20 hours later. According to the Guardia Civil officers at the scene, she was properly restrained in a child seat and the injuries had been caused by her head hitting the tablet she was watching at the time of the crash. Her mother’s condition is said to be serious but not life-threatening, while one child on the school bus sustained minor injuries.

The man was unable to get to the stands in time and was trapped by the large bull against the barrier. The barriers are constructed of iron and he received head and chest injuries which proved fatal. The mayor expressed her sorrow at the tragedy, saying that all regulations were complied with and liability insurance was in place.

Depopulation problem closes school in more ways than one
Aliens actor passes away in Alicante
MOTORISTS on a busy road in Torrevieja were astonished to see a man dangling from a bridge above their vehicles on Tuesday morning. The incident happened at about 9am on the CV-905 which joins the Carrefour at Habaneras and Las Torretas. The man was hanging under a pedestrian bridge by his fingertips before he fell to the ground, a distance of about six metres. The Local Police

station is located next to the area and they were quickly on the scene and reported the man to obviously be on alcohol or drugs and acting very aggressively. He was eventually loaded into an ambulance and taken to the University Hospital at Torrevieja with a suspected broken ankle. His nationality has not been revealed at this stage or whether he was a local or tourist.
THE closure of the village school in the Vall de Gallinera has highlighted the issue of depopulation that is threatening the way of life or even existence of many inland Marina Alta municipalities. The Alpatro School had only three pupils registered this year and these students will now be bussed to the school at Beniali, six kilometres away. Parents and pupils both agree this move is for the best, with the new college having better resources and better opportunities to make new friends. However even the Beniali
by Simon Russell
School has only 19 pupils which come from eight small villages, illustrating how sparsely populated the area has become. While coastal towns in the Marina Alta have thrived from the tourist boom and migratory influx since the 1970s, young people from inland towns have moved to the coast for work and other opportunities. The Vall de Gallinera for example has under 600 inhabitants, a drop of almost 20% in ten years, with most of those remaining being older residents.

P R O B A B LY best known for his important role in the movie “Aliens”, actor Al Matthews died at his home in Orihuela Costa this week. US national Mr Matthews had a long and varied career, becoming the first black US Marine in the Vietnam War to be promoted to sergeant. He then had a complete career change and became a successful soul singer, with top twenty hits in the UK including “Fool” which still receives regular airplay. He changed his path once again in the 80s to pursue a career in acting with parts in Superman III, Tomorrow Never Dies, The Fifth Element and many other movies.
Undoubtedly his biggest role was the cigar-chewing Sergeant Apone in Aliens, a worldwide hit and the wellreceived sequel to Alien. Al Matthews was born on 21 November 1942 in Brooklyn, New York and died on 22 September in Alicante province aged 75. His body was found by a neighbour and an autopsy is being performed to confirm the cause of death.

Rainy Tuesday leaves Benidorm Under water by Andy Mansell
FIREFIGHTERS were called in to rescue eight people trapped in their vehicles, following a torrential downpour in Benidorm last Tuesday afternoon. Meteorology reports suggest that during one particular period of heavy rain, in less than 10 minutes more than 40 litres per square meter fell on the Rincรณn de Loix area of the resort, with peaks of up to 60 litres at specific times. Drainage infrastructure was unable to cope with the deluge, causing flooding and forcing road closures throughout the city. On the Northern outskirts of the Rincon de Loix zone, eight people became trapped in six cars at the busy Orozco traffic lights on the road towards Albir. A firefighting crew from the Benidorm Station dispatched to rescue the drivers from flood water which had reached up to 70cm in height, confirmed that the victims were shaken, but uninjured, police were forced to close the adjoining roads temporarily to allow the accumulated water to disperse. Road closures also occurred at Avenida Alfonso Puchades, Avenida Zamora and the Levante beachfront Ametlla del Mar, where a burst water main caused damage to the brick paved road surface, which was Torrential rains flood Benidorm quickly repaired and reopened.

A police inspection of the terraces of 24 bars and restaurants in Alicante found that 13 had more tables than permitted and two had no licence at all for outside seating areas. HIDRAQUA, the current water concessionaire for Benidorm, has introduced their fleet of five new electric vehicles, a move that coincided with the European Week of Mobility. This is the first step to replace a total of 20 Hidraqua vehicles with electric vans over the next five years. The vans are used for general maintenance and service of the water network and this move will save an estimated 12.5 tons of CO2 per annum. The 60 horsepower vehicles can travel about 200 kilometres when charged. Their initial purchase cost is higher than diesel or petrol vans, but they are cheaper to run as well as bringing environmental benefits.

Two men arrested for 40k euro airport theft
NATIONAL Police officers have called for travellers to be more vigilant after they apprehended two men suspected of stealing cash to the value of around forty thousand euros from a recently arrived Russian passenger at Alicante Airport. The theft occurred on September 8th, when the victim, a tourist from Russia was picking up her car in the airport parking lot. The two suspects, aged 38 and 39, are alleged to have targeted the woman as she loaded her vehicle. One of the men attracted her

FOR the second time in two weeks, fire crews from Elche have had to act to make a building safe as chunks of concrete fell to the ground. The edifice is the well known 296 Houses urbanisation in Carrus. On Monday a concrete block fell to the ground and the fire crews had to close

attention to distract her, whilst the other stole her handbag, which contained 40,000 dollars, 3,500 euros, 20,000 roubles, an iPhone 8 plus and a Samsung Galaxy amongst other items. After the victim reported the robbery, National Police officers based at the airport, studied CCTV footage to look for men acting suspiciously in both the terminal and car park. They observed the two suspects, walking in a seemingly random
way, but actually employing highly coordinated movements to identify and encircle potential victims and were able to get clear images of the protagonists. Once the two men had identified their potential prey, normally recent arrivals from international flights, they followed them to the bus stop, taxi rank or airport car park, where one would distract them, whilst the other attempted to steal their bag. The officers were discreetly observing the two suspects last Saturday when the saw them
Funeral plaques brought back to life JAVEA’S Solar Blasco museum continues with its project to renovate the Sant Joan cemetery chapel, an important heritage site. They have now completed the complex restoration of ten funeral panels. These are ceramic plaques, similar to headstones in that they have information such as the deceased’s date of birth, death, name and a dedication. These date back to the
18th century and needed specialised restoration to bring them back to their full glory. Other recent works at the chapel have included the restoration of the old doors, replacement of window frames and the renewal of electrics. The wooden walkway to the hermitage has also been restored, giving a good observation point for the excavation works at the grave site.
follow a particular potential victim out to the car park. They made the interception and arrest, as the two men were in the process of conducting an elaborate theft. On interviewing the suspects, the agents were able to verify that between the two detainees there were more than 50 previous cases involving them on police records, most of them for theft. The men subsequently appeared before magistrates in Elche, where they were released pending bail payment and court proceedings.

Record high prices for Costa hotels AS the tourist industry across the Costa Blanca continues to analyse what on the face of it looks like a poor summer for the area, more figures have emerged. One of these is that the RevPar, an industry term for the level of income per room, was at a new high. The average daily rate for a room was also at a new high, €105.20, leading to a RevPar figure of €85.99. While these statistics mean that the industry may not have suffered as much as if prices had been held down,
by Simon Russell
many insiders are citing the rises as one of the main reasons tourists, the British in particular, were staying away. Instead, they were seeking out cheaper deals in places like Tunisia and Egypt, despite their past troubles. Experts say that hotels will have to look closely at their pricing structure for 2019 if they want to avoid a repeat of this year, which saw an occupation rate of only 83.68% in August across the Costa Blanca as a whole.
La Vila Patients shout for help
DUE to the malfunctioning nursing call system at Hospital de La Vila, patients are being forced to shout when they need attention, prompting one visitor to say it sounded more like a football ground than a hospital. Apart from the noise the problem creates, critics have said that more worryingly staff may not be made aware if there was a medical emergency where before a patient would normally have just pushed the call button. The problem is particularly serious for less mobile patients and those who have just

received surgery. In the worst affected wards over half the buttons are not currently working while in others the data that comes through to the switchboard is incorrect, sending staff to the wrong room. The hospital manager Rosa Luis Cereceda said that they were aware of the problem and conceded that the switchboards are very old. However, the system will cost around €60,000 to replace and all possible avenues need to be looked into before the money is spent.
“Wolf pack” accused again ACCORDING to sources, a judge in Cordoba is set to charge four members of the infamous La Manada, or wolf pack, with crimes including sexual abuse. The charges relate to an attack on a 21-year-old woman in Pozoblanco, images of which have been leaked online. The four are set to stand trial for sexual abuse, crimes against privacy and abuse.
The men are currently out of jail awaiting the result of an appeal against a seven-year jail sentence they received for the sexual attack of a young woman during the Pamplona bull-running festival. Controversially they were found not guilty of rape on the grounds that the 18-year-old didn’t struggle enough against her five attackers.
Misplaced affection
A man in Benidorm was the latest victim of what the police refer to as “affectionate thefts”. He was on his way back to his hotel when he was approached by a young man who offered sexual favours and began hugging the other male. However, this was a ploy to steal valuables and when the victim realised what was going on he started to protest. At this stage, the thief hit him in the head before making off with a

phone and about €200 in cash. Fortunately, the scene had been witnessed by National Police officers on patrol and they quickly arrested the suspect. The usual victims in these types of thefts are older men approached by young women, although the authorities have said everyone should be vigilant, as this case demonstrated.

Perfume campaign not to be sniffed at by Simon Russell
FAMED perfume house Dior has chosen a site in Javea for the promotion campaign for its new fragrance, called “Joy”. The Casa de la Sardinera de Xabia, a villa owned by Baroness Torres-Torres tops the cliffs at Portixol. Aimed at a younger audience such as Instagram users, the campaign has been shooting all this week. Those filming the promotional material have also been taking advantage of some of the local highend gastronomy on offer, with catering services provided by Bon Amb, chef Alberto Ferruz’ two Michelin star restaurant.

Facelift for old cinema by Matthew Richards
JAVEA’S historic Jayan cinema is getting a complete makeover to bring it into the 21st century. Originally built in 1950, the building is regarded as the last authentic movie theatre on the Marina Alta and remains a family run affair. Changes include reforming the main entrance and facade, renovating the air conditioning and electrics, construction of new toilets and putting in handicapped access for the Calle Azagador entrance. The main phase of the work is expected to be completed to allow the cinema to re-open in mid October. Many of the works were started before the summer season then halted for July and August in order to stay open during the main holiday period. The last major changes were a few years ago when the viewing salon was updated and the capacity increased to 350.

Bad town for bikes
A GROUP of cyclists have accompanied Podemos opposition politicians around Javea to point out what they see as the many issues riders face in getting around the town. Deficiencies pointed out included unconnected bike lanes, lanes with 90 degrees turns meaning you have to stop and routes that are not even paved. Many
by Matthew Richards
of the routes are shared with cars, a lot of whose drivers seem to think the cyclists have no right to be there, while others are shared with pedestrians, skateboarders and so on. The Podemos representatives agreed and called the situation “deficient”.
Squatters terrifying local residents
LEGAL residents on an urbanisation in Denia have said that they are living in fear of a gang of squatters who have moved in there. The situation is taking place on La Siesta Urbanisation, and the group have at least four dogs which are classed as dangerous, including two pit-bulls. The dogs are very aggressive and charge at the fence whenever anyone walks by, said Mario Vidal from the residents association. The number of illegal

dwellers is growing all the time with more families coming to live on the estate every week, Mr Vidal continued. In 2014 the same area had a similar problem, with squatters living in unfinished properties. The problem was dealt with by the local police and the property developer who built a perimeter wall. It is not known if the current incumbents are anything to do with the ones from 2014.

took place at about 5.30pm on the N-340, causing major delays as people were cut from their vehicles by fire crews. The reasons for the crash remain unclear at this stage.
Data protection Online sales help
scandal
CALPE’S Town Hall has been accused of a serious data protection breach after personal details of around 9,000 residents were published on the municipal website. Apparently, the information has been available to anyone for two years and includes the individual’s age, gender and NIE or DNI. It appears that the DNI

listing is the cause of the problem. The number is not regarded as a breach of data protection laws in itself, but when linked to other personal information it does breach the guidelines. THE opposition PSOE discovered the issues and has denounced the town hall, asking for a full enquiry.

Car free city booming NEXT year the Spanish city of Pontevedra will be celebrating 20 years since it declared itself a car-free zone, something an increasing amount of municipalities are believed to be considering. The Galician city was well ahead of the environmental curve, taking the hugely controversial decision to ban all but essential traffic in 1999. That was the year current mayor Miguel Anxo Fernandez Lores first took office. Back then he said “The historical centre was dead. It was rife with drugs and traffic, polluted and not somewhere locals or visitors wanted to go.” Within
by Simon Russell
a month of him taking office the 300,000 square meters old town was fully pedestrianised and traffic banned except for deliveries, emergency services and so on. Car parks were closed and underground ones built on the outskirts, traffic lights were removed along with road signs. The transformation was immediate and the benefits have been long-lasting, said Mr Fernandez. Instead of constant traffic noise, you can hear birdsong and people can talk without shouting. Thirty people had been killed on the cities roads between 1989 and
1999, whereas there have been no deaths in the past nine years and only three in the first ten years of the scheme. CO2 emissions are down by 70% and the town’s population has increased from 68,000 to 80,000 at a time when most Galician cities are shrinking. Critics say that cars are pushed to the outskirts and some people just like to drive wherever they are going, especially in bad weather, something Galicia gets plenty of. However, the vast majority of the population wouldn’t change the system and younger residents have never known Pontevedra when it had cars in its centre.

SEVERAL pupils were turned away from classes at a secondary school in Torrevieja this week for breaches of dress code. Pupils were met by a concierge and teacher and if their shorts were considered too short they were told to go to the library and sit out lessons there. Parents and students alike have condemned the move, saying the dress code is a matter of personal taste and nothing to do with school authorities. The school’s regulations bar the wearing of “swimwear, T-shirts with offensive messages, clothing which displays underwear and clothing which covers the head.”
PEGO’S Fira de Comerç is this Saturday, 29 September, and will feature a rapid painting competition. The contest is on Calle Sant Miquel and there are adult and children’s (7 to 17) categories. The participants have from 10am to 2pm to complete their works which will then be exhibited until 5pm when the winners are
announced. Twenty local retailers are taking part in the Commercial Fair itself from a wide range of businesses in the Marina Alta town. There will also be a special campaign making people aware of recycling and every purchase at the fair will come with an eco-friendly cloth bag with the slogan “I love Comerç de Pego”.

The yachts will travel from Denia to the San Antonio Nautical Club in Ibiza with large crowds

Stop the violence GABRIELA Bravo, Valencia’s Justice Minister, has pledged that tackling gender violence will be a priority for the current Consell. She made the comments at a day set up to find ways to tackle the issue that was also
attended by delegates from the security forces, social services, crime assistance officers and government officials. 35 women have been killed by male partners this year, two in the Valencian Community. Recent figures show that less
than 20% of those killed had previously reported their fears to the police, despite clear signs in most cases that they were in abusive relationships. For this reason the authorities need to be more pro-active with the issue, she said.
Another child drowns in pool JUST a few days after a British child drowned in a swimming pool in the Canary Islands, an 18-month-old has died in another pool accident, this time in Granada. The incident was called in at 9.15pm last Sunday from the Granadan town of Alomartes. The authorities said that the call was made by the people who found the body but it is not clear if this was the parents. A full investigation has been opened into the circumstances leading to the tragedy with

In an interview with “The Sun” newspaper an industry expert on travel safety said he believed that Spanish pools were “among the most dangerous in Europe”. Lifeguards leaving their post or not paying sufficient attention was the main reason given.
Long wait for ITV DUE to high demand, staff
holidays and technical issues people with appointments are still having to wait for over an hour at the ITV testing station in Ondara. This is the only station for the entire Marina Alta and many are saying that the system has effectively collapsed. The situation started to get out of hand in August and it was hoped that September would see an improvement but things have hardly changed according to recent customers. Having just the single station for a population of about 170,000 has long been considered inadequate, say local road associations.

Sandwich giant in the dock
THE inquest into the death of 15 year old Natasha EdnanLaperouse who collapsed on a British Airways flight in July 2016, continued this week. The West London coroner’s court heard how the teenager had eaten an artichoke, olive and tapenade baguette purchased from artisan sandwich chain Pret a Manger prior to the flight. Natasha had a number of severe allergies and the court heard that she was fastidious about checking

the labelling before eating food. During the flight, which she was on with her father, the girl suffered a cardiac arrest and said she couldn’t breathe. Her father administered both the epipens she carried for such an emergency but she died later the same day at a hospital in France. It was believed she suffered a reaction to sesame seeds in the
baguette which were not listed as a product. The corner also heard that there had been 21 allergic reactions attributed to Pret a Manger products in the year before Natasha’s death, nine of them
linked to sesame seeds. Under examination the firms manager of risk and compliance said that Pret a Manger had “appropriate signage and labelling in place”. The inquest continues.

Murdered children had been denied court protection
THE Valencian city of Castellon is in shock after a man killed his two children with an axe before committing suicide. The shocking chain of events leading to the discovery of the atrocity started at 5.30am on Tuesday when a man’s body was found on Calle Peri, a small alleyway between a supermarket and a block of flats in the south of the city. The authorities were called out and were able to establish that the victim lived in one of the apartments next to his body. The officers went to the man’s apartment and discovered the corpses of the dead man’s daughters, aged three and six years old; they had died from fatal injuries to the neck, caused by an axe lying nearby. The assumption at this stage is that the dead man killed his children and then jumped from the apartments sixth floor window. The press have learnt that the killer had been separated from the children’s mother for just over a year. Despite claims of
by Simon Russell
abuse and ill treatment from the man’s wife, a judge granted him full visitation rights in a hearing this February. The woman’s complaint had been heard in Castellon’s Court of Gender Violence but a judge did not fully believe her version of events. The police’s own risk assessment had classified the man as “low risk” and her request for a restraining order was denied. Despite the judge’s ruling the prosecutor had recommended that the restraining order be granted - the judge said that this measure would have been “disproportionate”. The suspected murderer has been named locally as Ricardo CG, aged 48. The child’s mother, aged 42, has been hospitalised to receive psychiatric attention due to the shock. The mayor of Castellon, Ali Brancal, appears to have lambasted the courts earlier ruling calling it a slap in the face for victims of gender violence.

Well, if you’re Will Smith, that’s exactly what you decide to do to mark the milestone birthday and also raise money for charity. The star appeared visibly nervous as he hovered over the canyon in northern Arizona before leaping backwards and plummeting towards the ground in a jump streamed live on YouTube. “This is gorgeous, beautiful,” he said as he swung upside down on the end of the bungee cord. He then blew kisses to the watching crowd, which included wife Jada Pinkett Smith and kids Jaden, Willow and Trey. Well done Fresh Prince …… personally I’d rather have a KFC!

Rose coloured Raybans
Gone today... ’Hair’ tomorrow, Mr Beckham
Pink of every shade has been the fashion colour of the year for both sexes, from cerise hair for women, to half naked rugby players supping Strawberry gin and lemonade at Benidorm’slevante beachfront bars. Now style gods Rayban, (that’sRayban, Not Raybeni), have released their own pink tinted sunglasses to brighten even the dullest Winter wardrobe. So now we can all see the world through rose coloured glasses.
Has he or hasn’t he? David Beckham’s hair has always had a life of its own whatever style he chose to sport on top of his head. He’s had them all, everything from blond bangs, to top knots, via dreadlocks and a shaved, bald bonce. But recent photos of him sporting a thick, dark bush of barnet have caused a social media storm as rumours circulate that he’s had a transplant. The 43-year-old appeared to have either dyed his hair or had a transplant treatment, when he turned up on stage in Hong Kong on Monday as a brand ambassador for an insurance firm. However, style commentators and fellow celebrities were quick to criticise the male grooming icon. Piers Morgan weighed in on ‘Good Morning Britain’ saying: “What does he look like? Dear oh dear. Honestly. I’ll never get the attraction of Beckham. Quite extraordinary.” Twitter was red hot too, “Christ, it looks like he’s done it himself from a spray-on hair can.Dropped about 10,000 places on the sexiest men list!” wrote @StressedEric72. Meanwhile @TheStellaRossa suggested simply: “Shave your head, son.” Have to admit I agree with the last commentator, as a selfconfessed baldie, back in the day when my hair was deserting the top of my head like rats off a sinking ship, he chose to shave his head for the 1998 World Cup and suddenly shaved heads were everywhere. I shaved mine and never went back, so maybe it’s time for Mr Beckham to do the same and go back to his roots.
Good news for fans of Ant and Dec as Ant McPartlin this week confirmed he has been sober for six months following a public battle with alcohol. Instagram photos appeared showing, the television presenter, best known as one half of the presenting duo Ant and Dec, who checked into a private rehab clinic earlier this year after pleading guilty to drink-driving, looking fit and healthy on a lunch date with a long time mate. The 42-year-old was praised by his friend Simon Hargreaves for his “strength and determination” in facing in problems. In a message shared by McPartlin on Ant and Dec’s official Twitter page, Hargreaves wrote: “Long overdue catch up with my buddy of 20+ years for lunch this week. 6 months sober, annoyingly healthy looking, and happier than I’ve seen him in years.
New faces on the judging panel, more bizarre facial surgery on Simon Cowell’s mush and a change in format appears to have breathed some new life into ITV’s ailing weekend juggernaut X Factor. With the auditions over and no boot camp round, this Saturday and Sunday’s shows see the hopefuls take on the brutal and gruelling six chair challenge to secure their place at judge’s houses. Husband and wife duo Robbie and Ayda Williams, plus fellow newcomer One Direction’s Louis Tomlinson have brought some much needed freshness, vibrancy and relevance to the judging panel, replacing old farts Sharon
Osbourne and Louis Walsh. I have to admit to being hooked on this season already, as the panel have put through an eclectic mix of singers including drag queens, transgenders, ex contestants and of course the usual oddball bunch of young hopefuls. Robbie has the groups, Simon has the girls, Louis the boys, but I am rooting for my new favourite judge Ayda with her motley collection of overs, which include Benidorm’s own gem, Mr Danny Tetley. The word on the street is Danny has been over in Dubai recently, so without giving too much away, maybe the house of a judge was involved. All will be revealed in due course, so watch out for my little X Factor update every week and expect tears, tantrums and expletives if things

Dear Sirs, Your article ‘Streets of Shame’, revealing that some local residents in Javea are fed up with the state of the streets and public areas (issue of the Weekender Friday 14th September), revealed just part of the problem in Javea. It is not just weeds and badly maintained public lighting that is irritating and giving the town a bad name. The current administration in Javea seem obsessed with putting speed humps everywhere, often in places that are totally unnecessary, such as on the approach to traffic islands, where cars have to slow down anyway. Of course it would be better if we saw fewer weeds and better road surfaces but more important if we started to see the removal of some of these quite unnecessary and vicious speed humps. In this respect, Javea is behind the times anyway. Latest research from the UK has revealed that speed humps are discredited because they damage car suspension systems and increase pollution, both in terms of noise and vehicle emissions, as cars brake to negotiate the speed humps and then accelerate away. Come on Javea Mayor. Remove the ‘streets of shame’ tag from Javea -which is fast becoming the speed hump capital of Europe- and dump many of your over-the-top and unnecessary speed humps. Gary Morgan, Montgo, Javea
Having read your report last week of August is the hottest in our area for six years, I’ve come to the conclusion that I’m getting immune to temperatures in my elderly years. When I moved to Torrevieja from the UK 15 years ago, the old air conditioning was blasting away left, right, and centre during July and August. Last month, I didn’t even switch it on, whilst my friends at a local bar said that it was all a bit too much for them. I also work at the other end of the scale, as come the winter, I barely use any heating as my acquaintances are shivering away come January. It must be the quality of my blood, or perhaps an even greater consciousness of the everincreasing energy prices that we have to put up with here in Spain! Let’s hope the new government does something about those costs like they promised when they came office a few months ago. JOYCE BRADLEY, La Siesta, Torrevieja

Talks
BATTLE LINES DRAWN Sponsored By by Alex Trelinksi
Labour Party delegates at their annual conference in Liverpool voted overwhelmingly on Tuesday for a motion making a second referendum on Brexit an option. The ballot was a rejection of the British government’s so-called Chequers plan, which Downing Street has said: “is the only plan on the table.” That was on the back of the plan being shredded and rejected, as Prime Minister Theresa May was humiliated at last week’s informal EU summit in Salzburg. Labour’s EU spokesman, Sir Keir Starmer(pictured on Tuesday), promised the party faithful in Liverpool that its MPs would vote against May’s proposal as it clearly failed to pass Labour’s “six tests.” Those tests include the strength of future relations with the EU and protecting workers’ rights. Starmer received a rousing standing ovation when he told delegates: “It’s right that parliament has the first say but if we need to break the impasse our options must include campaigning for a public vote and nobody is ruling out remain as an option”. Party leader Jeremy Corbin repeated Starmer’s comments over the parliamentary vote, during Wednesday’s keynote speech. He said leaving the EU without a deal would be “a national disaster”, adding: “If
parliament votes down a Tory deal Tel: 671 935 072 or the government fails to reach any deal at all, we would press for a general election.” Corbyn yesterday met the EU’s chief negotiator, Michel Barnier, to explain his party’s position at a time when European commission officials are increasingly concerned that the UK will be unable to agree to a final deal, making them fear a no-deal Brexit is more likely.

FED UP WITH LOW SAVINGS RATES? Are you fed up with the low or nonexistent savings rates you have been getting on your bank accounts for the last 10 years, especially now that inflation is over 2%, which effectively means that the buying power of your money is decreasing year on year. So what can you do as there are alternatives? OK they have risks, but even by leaving your money sitting in a bank you have risks, so there is nothing wrong with taking a little risk. More and more people are turning to the stock market for salvation. In turn, many of the country’s top companies are responding positively by boosting their dividend payments to shareholders. Why are dividends rising? First, despite the economic doomsters, profits this year amassed by FTSE 100 companies are forecast to reach an alltime high of £223 billion. That is higher
than the previous peak of 2011 when booming profits from mining firms boosted the overall figures. Bigger profits usually mean higher dividends.

ARC - PUPPIES & KITTIES NEEDING HOMES
With one in three families owning a dog, a cat or both it is no wonder that more and more people are booking holidays that include their four-legged friends. There was a time it wasn’t possible to take pets abroad without considerable difficulty, making the prospect of them joining the family holiday out of the question. With so many of us feeling sad at leaving our furry companions behind, travel operators are fast finding ways of accommodating them. Ferry services are particularly geared-up for taking cats and dogs abroad to destinations including France and Spain - and some even accept ferrets and caged pets. Many have kennel accommodation, and the costs are no more than for a person and certainly less than paying for kennels while you are away. You will need to establish that t h e

Your pet must be inspected by vets, both in the UK before departure and abroad before your return (most vets in France are not open on Sundays and Mondays). Ensure that you are fully aware of the regulations before planning your journey. It is also worth asking your vet about heartworm, which may be more prevalent among dogs on the continent than those in the UK, and also asking about treatment against ticks. Once you have decided you are going to take your pet on holiday, you will need to book in advance otherwise they won’t be able to travel.

Health & Beauty
Melanoma – a potentially
aggressive, life-threatening cancer Melanoma is a serious type of skin cancer. It is mainly caused by too much sun exposure so living in Spain we are more at risk. It can also be triggered by sunlamps and sun bed treatments. The risk is increased if you: • have a fair complexion • have freckles • are a blue eyed blonde • are a redhead • you have an underlying pigment disorder Men are 3 times more likely to get skin cancer than women and the risk further increases with age. Once you’ve had a skin cancer, like basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, there’s a good chance it will come back or you’ll get a new tumor within a few years, so you’ll need to get your skin checked regularly to catch it early. Melanoma can start in dark skin tissue, such as a mole or birthmark, as well as in normally pigmented skin. For men, it often shows up on the head, neck, or between the shoulders and hips. Women commonly get it on the arms and legs. It can also be found on the palms of your hand, on the soles of your foot, under a fingernail or toenail, in mucus linings (in your mouth, vagina, or anus, for example), and even in your eye. Spread
Malignant melanomas can spread outwards and downwards over the lymphatic system into the surrounding skin or lymph nodes. Later it may metastasize into organs

A treatment plan will be decided by the dermatologist after the cancer has been staged. Treatments may include: • Surgery • Cryotherapy • Radiation • Chemotherapy or photochemotherapy • Laser therapy • Biologic or immunotherapy • Targeted therapy
Summary
• Malignant melanoma is usually easy to diagnose • Malignant melanoma is usually curable if diagnosed early • Malignant melanoma grows faster than other types of cancer and can spread to other parts of the body including the bones and the brain. It is then very hard to treat and can’t be cured

NEW Audi Q3 The original Audi Q3 was a big seller in the UK for Audi. It was a compact crossover with an Audi badge on it, so of course it was popular. But it wasn’t actually all that good. A bit cramped in the back, a dated interior and a horrible steering. Audi insists it has improved all that. The new Q3 for 2018 is all about giving you more apparently - more sporty, more dynamic and more mature is how Audi describes it. One thing it doesn’t say is crossover. That word is conspicuously absent whenever it talks about the Q3 - instead, this is now a compact SUV. It’s a pretty good looking car from the outside. Get up close and you’ll find it sits a lot taller than the old Q3 and feels bigger all around. The rear seats slide forward by 15cm, giving you a bit more flexibility if you want to carry big stuff in the 530-litre boot. The seats also tilt. This is possibly where this Q3 is most improved from the old model. It’s far less cramped
with more space for your elbows and far more legroom. The interior design of the old Q3 has been replaced by a lovely posh new cabin that’s essentially a scaled down version of what you’d get in a Q8 or A7 Sportback. They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. We reckon this is one of the best interiors ever committed to a car - and it’s a very successful transition into the Q3. The quality of the finish is impeccable and it has the same luxury sensation you find in the Q8. It feels light years ahead of the BMW X2 or Mercedes-Benz GLA. It comes with niceties such as Audi’s ‘virtual cockpit’, essentially replacing the analogue dials with a high-resolution screen. The full version is an optional extra, the standard is a slightly less appealing but still digital 10.25-inch screen. The MMI Navigation system standard on all models - is excellent and really easy to use, plus it’s a proper touchscreen rather than
needing a dial controller. Due to Audi’s new badging system, the 1.5 TFSI petrol engine we’re driving here is now called the 35 TFSI - available with an S-tronic, while a six-speed manual is on its way next year. There
Countdown to Paris Motorshow The countdown is on, the doors open to the public from 4-14 October 2018. So we’ve compiled a list of the expected highlights. The 2018 Mondial de l’Auto is labelled as the world’s biggest car show. It is a biennial exhibition, alternating with the Frankfurt motor show in Germany. The expo was first held in 1898 in the Jardin des Tuileries in the French capital and the last show in 2016 it attracted 1,072,697 visitors. There will be the world debut of the new BMW 3-series, a raft of French concept cars, our first look at the Mercedes-Benz EQ C electric car and the launch of the new quirky Suzuki Jimny off-roader
See our manufacturers list below for what cars we´re expecting them to showcase: AUDI - The new A1 supermini, E-Tron electric SUV and of course the new Q3 (see above) BMW - The latest 3-series, codenamed G20, 8-series, X5 and Z4 CITROEN - Citroen C5 Aircross and DS 3 Crossback FERRARI - Monza SP1 and SP2 HYUNDAI -i30 N Fastback INFINITI - Project Black S, with F1 derived powertrain KIA - Ceed GT, ProCeed and GT, Niro EV full electric crossover. LEXUS - RC sports coupe,
LC Limited Edition, ED and UX their new baby SUV. MERCEDES-BENZ A-Class Saloon, A35 AMG hot hatch, B-Class, GLE and the new electric SUV the EQC PEUGEOT - 508 SW, E-Legend concept car and a range of new Hybrids. PORSCHE - Macan with a facelift. RENAULT - Another facelift with the Kadjar and a range of concept cars SEAT - Tarraco, Spains latest crossover. SKODA - Kodiaq vRS, Karoq Scout and Vision RS concept car. SUZUKI - Jimny and Vitara facelifts TOYOTA - Camry and Corrolla Touring Sports
is also a 2.0 TFSI engine (available with 230PS in the top version) plus of course the ubiquitous 2.0 TDI that comes with 150PS, badged 35 TDI, or 190PS, called 40 TDI. Makes perfect sense? As more and more of us abandon diesel it’s
no surprise that the 35 TFSI with the S-tronic automatic is the model Audi reckons will be the most popular. That said, it doesn’t make for the most convincing drive. It is very smooth and quiet unless you rev the
nuts off it and has a decent get up and go initially. But it’s really hampered by the S-tronic gearbox which seems to sap the power and enjoyment - out of what is, we know from other Volkswagen Group cars - a great little engine.
Are you a back-seat driver? A recent study has shown seven in 10 drivers believe there is nothing more annoying than a passenger who frequently displays exaggerated emotion or offers unwanted ‘help’ or advice. Criticising the driver’s decisions, flinching when they appear to drive too close to the car in front or pointing out the correct turnoff or junction also irritate those behind the wheel. The top 20 list of annoyances also includes being involved in ‘road rage’ on the driver’s behalf, holding hands over their face and insisting on giving directions – usually when they are not needed. David Carter the spokesman for Accident Advice Helpline, which carried out the study via OnePoll.com said: “You usually find back-seat
drivers are the people who would prefer to be in control of the car, rather than sitting in as a passenger. “And if you’re someone who drives on a daily basis, it can be really hard to switch off and let someone else take control. “Unfortunately, making comments and reacting to what is happening on the road while in the passenger seat can be a big distraction for the person driving. “There is a higher risk of an accident or near-miss if the driver is having to fend off unhelpful feedback while trying to concentrate on the road.” Researchers found that partners are often the worse offenders when it comes to back-seat driving, closely followed (but not too close of course) by mum and dad. Just under half of the
drivers have been in an argument with someone in the car due to their comments, and five per cent have accidentally jumped a red light while arguing with an annoying passenger. A quarter of drivers missed a turning after being distracted, while seven per cent endured more serious consequences such as a collision. Interfering with the stereo or messing with the heating controls or air con are other driver complaints. Other back-seat driver characteristics also likely to cause a near-miss include advising on which lane the car should be in, and telling the driver when to move at the traffic lights. .Despite these issues being commonplace, only 21 per cent of motorists admitted they are back-seat drivers.

ALFAZ FANTASY FOOTBALL LEAGUE
There was one Monday Night game and a full Premier League programme at the weekend which gave the Alfaz Fantasy Football League it’s highest scoring week so far with the average score reaching over 33 points. Altogether there were 29 goals, 8 clean sheets, 29 yellow cards and I,m pleased to say the Referees kept their red cards in their pockets. This Season’s A.F.F.L. is beginning to take shape. There is a close battle at the top with only 26 points separating the top ten. Pauline’s Vodka Army have taken back the control of the Summit after a week away. Elaine’s Barbra’s XI have moved into 2nd place 7 points behind the Leaders while last weeks top of the tree Eric’s Peaky Blinders have slipped down to 3rd place. A new team as dropped into the bottom spot with Gary’s Upside Team taking over from his mate’s team Moey’s Mof Town. In our Junior League Harley’s Ginger Ninjar are beginning to pull away from the chasing pack and are now a comfortable 34 points clear of 2nd placed William & Henry. At the other end of the table, Fleetwood Gian has swapped places with Tom’s Real City and have found themselves 8 points adrift. Pauline’s Vodka Army has regained the top spot in our Mark Carter Ladies Section and has wasted no time in building up a steady lead over Jeanette’s Jin Dream Team which is 14 points. Linda’s Team Tapas is also in the running in 3rd place along with 4th placed Winnie’s Le Hombre Rioja. Kim’s Ginger
United have not moved off the bottom spot since the start of the Season and at the moment Jackie’s team Winchester have joined them in the basement and are just 6 points above. Both Managers are Manchester United Supporters need I say more! Kevin’s team Two for the Road became the 5th team to sample life at the top of our Golden Boot League which is sponsored by Across the Costas when they dislodged Des’s Wigan Champs and took a very narrow 4 point lead. Chelsea’s Edin Hazard is the top scorer in this section and not many Fantasy Managers selected him, in fact, only 15 took a chance on this popular Belgium Star, most Managers thought he was going to Real Madrid when Ronaldo left them for Juventus(me included). Fortunately, Jack’s team aptly named Winners to have the tricky winger in their line up and are currently are lying in 3rd place 5 points ahead of former Leaders Stephen’s Ortolans. Down at the foot of the table, Liz’s team Cookies Crew 61 are in all kinds of trouble, not only are they in the bottom spot their defender Southampton’s Hoedt put one past his own Goalkeeper at the weekend against Liverpool which gave Liz’s team a minus 10 score. Pauline’s Vodka Army are top of 3 Leagues as they are also in pole position in our Champion of Champions League with a 14 point advantage over Jin’s Dream Team. Lee’s team Athletico Higgo are nicely placed in the 3rd spot tucked in behind the front-runners. Dave’s team The Hatters remain in the bottom spot and are finding points
hard to come by in this League. Four teams have qualified to go into our Monthly Wine Draw and they are 3 teams who top scored this week with a tally of 57 points. Joe’s Keith Lard F.C.Dave’s Dropouts and Len’s H.M.S.Victory. Joining them will be our lowest scoring team which was Gary’s Upside Team who only managed 2 points in what was a high scoring week. Manager of the Month for September has been kindly sponsored by Scott & Darren at Sarita’s Restaurant in Albir who serve a very special Indian Cuisine which is the best in the Area. With one week to go Joe’s team, Keith Lard F.C. are in pole position with a 5 gap above Keth’s Max & Paddy. Harley’s Ginger Ninjar are in 3rd place while last weeks leaders Nathan’s The Boy’s Special have dropped to 4th. John’s Tarazara and Bootwinners are also up there and are also in contention for this fabulous meal for 2 at Sarita’s Restaurant. Len’s team H.M.S.Victory have sailed to victory and won this weeks Breakfast for 2 at the Bar Code in Alfaz after moving up the most places this week 54 to number 97th in the main League. The Draw for the Preliminary Round of our Weekender K.O.Cup Competition will soon be up on our website and will take place in a couple of weeks time.Don’t forget to follow your teams progress as the Season unfolds by logging onto our super website which is www.alfazffl.com or you can visit us on facebook and make any comments on what has happened so far in this seasons Fantasy League.

BENITACHELL BOWLS CLUB
On September 26th Saturday, at 15.00 hrs, Benitachell Bowls Club members all came together to play in the Tri-Cats Competition. When new members join the club they are placed in the following teams, Lions, Tigers and Jaguars and these teams a very competitive and play in the Northern League, (the Lions have won the Northern League nine times), so this competition against each other is hard fought and thoroughly enjoyed. The event was started with a ‘Spider’, which was won by Jennifer Nesteroff a Tiger and
was awarded the first two points. For the uninitiated, a penny is placed on the Jack, all the bowlers spread around the green and all bowl on the whistle, the nearest bowl to the penny wins. Teams then had four ends of fun bowling with a great deal of barracking from the oppositions, with cries of unfair and cheating, these of course were completely unfounded. Although it must be said that the adjudicator and scorer were both Lions!!. Four ends of normal bowling followed up by a meal on tables that each
team had decorated in their colours, they hoped for more points to help their score, their efforts were so good that all teams were awarded the same points. The evening started with putting (golf), photo quizzes, dominoes, peg holding and music quizzes. The culmination of the evening saw the Lions in yellow presented with the Tri-Cats trophy as the overall champions, closely followed by the Tigers in blue and the Jaguars in red. A great day and a good start to the annual bowling season.
Pego Golf Society match We had a smaller number than usual today, 28 players, possibly due to the continuing poor state of the course at Oliva Nova and an ongoing number of temporary greens. This situation has been around for some time and is leading to real irritation among the members. We were playing a Stableford Competition and we had one guest, Ray Young, the much younger and better-looking brother of Brendan Young. No guest prize
as he was the only guest. The results were as follows: Division 1: First place Paul Sankey with a great score of 44 points. Second place Donna Green with another great score of 42 points and Third Place Roger Brown with a great score of 40 points. Division 2: First place Fiona Sankey with a great score of 39 points, Second place John Evans with 35 points and Third place Alan Simpson with 33 points.
Nearest The Pin on hole 5 was Peter Rapley with 3.3m and on hole 16 was Ian Robertson with 3.9m. Only one Two today won by Donna Green. Balls in the Water competition was won by Fiona Sankey guessing 54 balls, finishing off a very successful day for the Sankeys!! Next week we have a Stableford competition, any guest wishing to play subject to handicap contact Penny Barden on pegohandicapsec@gmail.com.

Inaugural vetrans padel tournament at Cumbre Del Sol
The first veterans padel tournament took place at Cumbre Del Sol, with players from as far afield as Gandia and Calpe competing. There were three categories; men’s, women’s and mixed contested over two full days. The men’s event with ten pairs was split into two pools with the top two in each group qualifying for the semi-finals. The first game of the tournament set the tone as Bob Nix and Brian Butler beat Andy Ratcliff and Chris Small on a tie-break. Nix and
Butler finished runners-up in the pool for a semi-final spot. The stand-out pair in Group A was Graham Dixon and Trevor Walder who went through the pool stage undefeated. Justin Davies and John Stephens were equally impressive, winning all their matches in comfortable fashion to top pool B. The semi-final line up was completed with the pair of Mike Price and Bernard Poole. In the semifinals, Poole and Price edged out Dixon
and Walder, whilst Davies and Stephens had an easier match, seeing off the threat of Nix and Butler. The efforts of Poole and Price to win their semi-final contest took its toll as the fresher pair of Davies and Stephens remained undefeated to claim the men’s title. In the mixed event Anita Dixon and Gary Clark, emerged victoriously. Dixon also won the women’s final with her partner Moira Chylowskyj to cap a successful tournament.

Sport Ex-world number one, Andy Murray, was left red-faced after clumsily smashing a commemorative plate he had received prior to taking part in the Shenzhen Open this week. The tennis ace was gifted the plate for his contribution to tennis in China, but it didn’t last long, at all. Murray was handed the plate to pose for a media opportunity when it just as quickly fell from the open
