Your Weekend Starts Here!

END OF AN ERA One of Spain’s longestrunning English weekly newspapers, the Round Town News, has ceased to be published, after being bought less than two years ago by the Euro Weekly publishers Michel and Steven Euesden. This week’s shock closure came with a website announcement from Steven Euesden and a photo of him holding a glass of champagne stating that “advertisers and readers have told us that they want the Euro Weekly News”, and “consequently the EWN Media Group has decided to put their resources into that publication.” The Round Town News, better known to most people as the RTN, was established by Geoff Gartland in the late nineties and was an

innovative paper with popular columnists, as well eye-catching designs and an extensive use of colour, which was ahead of the pack. The RTN was also never afraid to dig to find the truth behind stories thanks to the staff who had a track record in journalism, including the much-missed Louise Clarke. The paper was bought by the Euro Weekly Group in February 2017, who at the time described the RTN as a “respected voice which reaches the very heart of the community” and “a highly trusted name in Spain”. Geoff Gartland’s son, Danny Wilkinson, who used to be the RTN’s managing and production director

said:- This is very sad for everybody connected to the original RTN. Unfortunately, the new version of the RTN was never going to be the same as the original”. An employee at the RTN revealed: “We’re not printing it any more. I only found out yesterday. It comes after we lost a large number of clients over the Christmas period. It’s very sad that a newspaper that has been going so long has come to this end.” Meanwhile, a client, who has used the RTN for a year, said: “It is incredibly sad that it has been allowed to collapse in this way. It was once a very popular paper, with a loyal following, but that has changed massively over the last couple of years.” In early 2017, the

publication in the Costa Blanca, and it’s closure in the south of Spain came in parallel with the RTN announcement.

EWN also bought the Sol Times, which after a few months ceased

Finance Feature provided by...

The Importance of making sure your finances are tax efficient – Part 1 – Over the forthcoming weeks I am going to illustrate the importance of making sure your finances are best positioned for tax here in Spain and highlight the real benefits of holding investments in a Spanish Compliant product. In this article I am going to compare the Spanish income tax position, for a Spanish tax resident, between a tax compliant policy and a non-compliant policy So what is a Spanish Compliant Policy? Well firstly, don’t be confused by it being titled ‘Spanish’, it is sometimes presumed that this means the investments are held in Spain, or have an investment focus on Spain. This is not the case, A Spanish Compliant Bond is a tax compliant policy which has to meet a number of technical conditions. For example the funds available for selection must be EU UCITS fund. A UCITS fund is a collective investment schemes established and authorised under a harmonised EU legal framework, allowing investors to access cross border investments, which all have to fall under the UCITS product rules. In addition, a Spanish Compliant policy provider must appoint a fiscal representative in Spain with responsibility for reporting on and the payment of personal income tax on savings income as I will explain later in the article. One of the main benefits of investing in a tax compliant policy is that the growth in the policy is not taxable until the policy is surrendered or when a withdrawal takes place, even if you make changes to the investments. So it is not until money is taken from the policy and a gain is realised that the

policyholder will incur a liability to income tax. The process is then simplified further with basic tax calculated and sent to the Hacienda on behalf of the client. The income tax authorities in Spain have specifically exempted owners of compliant policies from disclosing the policy on their Modelo 720 declaration of overseas assets, another great feature of the policy. So how does this compare to a noncompliant policy? Well to start with, the non compliantpolicy does not provide the same tax deferral benefits, instead the policyholder must declare the annual growth in their policy and pay income tax at the respective rate, even if there have been no withdrawals from the policy. Non-compliantpolicies must be also be disclosed on the Modelo 720. The taxation of savings income in Spain Savings income is currently taxable at the rates shown below. A Spanish Compliant policy will deduct 19% tax from the total gain which the fiscal representative will then pay to the tax authorities. If the policyholder receives savings income in excess of €6,000 in the tax year, they must pay the additional tax due, 2% on savings income up to €50,000 and a further 2% on the savings income over €50,000.

Comparing the tax position of the two policy types The following example compares the position between a non-compliant policy and a tax compliant policy for the tax years 2016, 2017 and 2018. It is presumed the investor has no other savings income taxable in Spain. The non-compliant policy €150,000 was invested into a noncompliant policy and the investor has no other savings income. The policyholder must declare each year the growth as savings income and pay tax on the total amount.

By Tracy Storer Senior Partner Chorus Financial

This clearly illustrates that on the same investment over a three year period, if you were to withdraw the growth year on year, the investments held within the non compliant policy, would have a tax liability of €6,670 over this 3 year period, however on the tax compliant version, the tax liability would only be €842, this is a difference in tax payable of €5,828! There are many other benefits of these bonds, including online access, ability to switch funds, detailed valuations and the option to have your investment managed by a local adviser, such as Chorus Financial.

If you would like any further information or if you would like for your current investments to be reviewed to see if they are tax efficient, please The tax compliant policy €150,000 was invested into a compliant give me a call on 693 107 044 or email policy. Until such time as withdrawals are t.storer@chorusfinancial.es

taken or the policy is surrendered, no tax is payable on the growth in the policy. However, Chorus Financial are not tax advisers; if the policyholder was to withdraw the growth the information provided is correct at each year the tax payable would be as follows.

Sleeping Lion claims British victim by Simon Russell

Photo: The Ponoig , known locally as the Sleeping Lion

THE identity of a 35-year-old British man who died while abseiling on a mountain in Alicante province has not yet been revealed by the authorities. The victim was abseiling on Polop’s Mount Ponoig on Tuesday afternoon when

he fell about 25 meters, dying instantly. He was roped to a 33 year old female, also believed to be a Briton. She was treated at the scene and taken to La Vila Hospital with unknown injuries. Early reports are that the woman fell first and

pulled down her climbing partner who was higher up the mountain. The two were staying at a nearby camp-site and ascended the Ferrata del Monte from there. The Ponoig is known locally as the Sleeping Lion due to its shape, is a popular

spot for climbers and hikers. It has several peaks above 1,000 metres with its summit being at 1,181 metres; a specialist climbers travel guide states that the mountain has “very steep slopes and formidable rocks and walls”.

Theft on an industrial scale TWELVE people have been arrested in Alicante and charged with a number of thefts from industrial estates in the area. The police said that the operation to catch the thieves started in August after break-ins at premises in Tibi, Agost and Alicante which they thought were probably linked. In each instance doors and shutters were forced and whatever valuables inside were stolen, including truck batteries. They believe the gang had two ringleaders who directed the work and chose targets. The gang would

The first breakthrough was finding some of the stolen goods at a scrapyard which hadn’t declared them. Earlier this month they issued arrest warrants for the suspects who have been charged with robbery with force, theft, deception, drug possession and membership of a criminal organisation. They also seized various electronic goods, 45 grams of cocaine and €3,000 in cash.

RYANAIR RAPPED

SPAIN’S Labour Ministry has found low-cost carrier Ryanair guilty of violating cabin crews’ right to strike as well as breaching work safety regulations and obstructing labour inspections. Unions claim that the Spanish government is threatening to fine the airline for 16 infractions, but Ryanair—which can appeal the infractions—said it had “no knowledge of these ‘proposals’,” The Labour ministry found that the company, by emailing or calling employees to see if they

The ministry report said bosses at Ryanair bases in Spain had “obstructed” the work of inspectors when they showed up to investigate accusations the airline had violated the right to strike. THERE are grave concerns for the fate of a missing Alicante woman after police arrested four men in connection with the case. As reported in last weeks Weekender 52 year old Nuria Ester Escalante went missing after travelling to Ibiza from her hometown of Sant Joan d’Alacant looking for winter work. After she failed to contact her children for two weeks and had not been seen by the person she was staying with her son reported her as missing. After the investigation got underway the Ibiza police said that they had reason to believe she had not gone missing of her own accord and started searching for places such as wells and ravines. The arrest on Tuesday is another twist, although few details are forthcoming. However, it has been disclosed that all four detainees are foreigners.

A woman accused of murdering the foster child of her partner will soon be facing trial after a psychiatric examination concluded she was mentally competent. The eight-year-old boy, who was autistic, was asphyxiated in August last year. The accused, Alejandra GP aged 31, originally claimed she had been sexually assaulted by two strangers who killed the boy. However, her story soon started to unravel as there were no witnesses who saw men matching the description on the busy street in the town of Elda. She then changed her story, saying that the boy had choked on some ham but forensic experts now believe he was strangled with a shirt. The accused, who is deaf, was pregnant at the time of the assault and has since given birth.

from the Royal Academy of Medicine. However as he explained to a Spanish news channel no-one it seems is hiring doctors, and specialists such as himself who are still completing aspects of their studies are finding it especially difficult.

Many of them are going private but others, like Alejandro, want to give something back to the general public that paid for much of their education. There has also been a doubling of the number of faculties of medicine, places that rarely take outside contractors.

THE Valencian Prosecutors Office has asked that if they are found guilty in an upcoming trial the senior management team at FGV at the time of the Valencian metro tragedy be jailed. In the 2006 accident, 43 people lost their lives after a train derailed between Jesus and Placa de Espanya stations. Marisa Gracia was the CEO of FGV, the train operating firm, at the time of the crash and the prosecutors say that her and seven of her directors from that time are criminally negligent.

by Simon Russell

They allege there were serious deficiencies on the stretch of rail where the accident occurred and FGV were aware of these. They had also failed to implement speed control methods on the tracks despite advice from safety bodies to do so. Furthermore, there were deficiencies in the training of personnel which may well have led to the accident. When the train derailed it was travelling at 80 kmph, twice the recommended speed. Of the

43 people that died just under half came from the small town of Torrent which was the train’s destination. The body of one woman has never been identified or claimed. Families of victims have been asking why the case has taken 12 years to go to trial, despite continual accusations of negligence, including allowing a driver diagnosed with epilepsy to pilot the vehicle, something which should have barred him from his job. The driver was one of the people killed at the crash scene.

The ride broke down in the evening but the three fire teams were able to get everyone safely back to earth in about 45 minutes. No-one was reported as requiring medical attention.

Dangerous places to work SPAIN continues to have one of the worst records in the European Union for safety in the workplace a new report shows. There have been a total of just under 400,000 accidents reported in 2018 so far, an increase of 3.6% in 2017. However, it is serious accidents and fatalities where Spain lags behind, with 2,629 incidents

classed as serious while there were 327 deaths in the workplace. ASEPAL, the association which commissioned the reports and monitors workplace safety, said that many of the accidents could have been avoided if the appropriate personal protective equipment was

worn. They say that the government should also be doing more to help by promoting new policies and rule changes to protect workers. The figures show that the highest number of incidents was recorded in the manufacturing industry, followed by commerce and construction. However, the service sector had the most fatal accidents.

Help with energy poverty VALENCIA Town Council has opened their first office aimed at helping people who are having problems meeting the payments of their energy bills. It has been estimated that about a quarter of the city’s population is classed as being in “energy poverty”, people or families that struggle to pay the most basic of bills. The new office will be in place next year at Calle Jose Maria Haro in the Aiora area. Help covered includes

queries about overcharging, advice on reducing energy use and information on financial aid available. Energy Councillor Berto Jaramillo said “the office will be a civil service for the city and an information space. Trained staff will have information and handouts on bills, renewable energies, subsidies and energy saving ideas for water, electric and gas usage”.

The clock is ticking and the Spanish tax man is awaiting the deadline Can you imagine the following scenario? You are driving your car along a Spanish oneway system. From out of nowhere, a Guardia Civil officer steps into the road, right arm up, left arm pointing at you to pull over… You love Spain, you bought a home in this country and pay taxes here. What can be wrong? Several minutes later you get a ticket (€1500) because you had not realised that your car insurance had expired. An innocent overlook, perhaps, but this reason will not be enoughto avoid the ticket. This is exactly what could happen if you missed the deadline to pay your non-resident tax. Please read through this articlethat we’ve written to help you understand how nonresident taxes work. What group are you in? You bought property in Spain andyou are withinone of the following three groups: Investor, to rent out (not having Spanish residency card) Holiday home owner (not having Spanish residency card) Permanent home owner (having Spanish residency card) If you’re within groups 1 and/or 2… keep reading please! Are you a Spanish fiscal resident? You are a Spanish fiscal resident if: You live more than 183 days per calendar year on Spanish territory (and had previously applied for a Spanish residency card).

CHALLENGES A bid over the legality of the EU’s Brexit negotiations brought by a 97-year-old war veteran and 12 other emigrant Britons were rejected by the European court of justice in Luxembourg on Monday. Harry Shindler, who lives in Italy, and others who reside in various EU member states had argued that the referendum in 2016 was invalid because they and more than a million Britons living in the EU were deprived of a vote. French lawyers acting for the British claimants said the EU should not, therefore, have accepted the UK’s intention to withdraw and start negotiations which culminated in the deal being signed in Brussels on Sunday. But the Council of the European Union successfully opposed the application, arguing that the EU’s decision did not affect

Otherwise, you area fiscal non-resident. However, both non-resident and resident property owners in Spain are obliged to fileannual income tax returns, as the Spanish tax system operates through self-assessment. What is the Spanish tax year? The fiscal tax year in Spain begins on the 1st January and ends on the 31st December. Spanish fiscal non-resident annual tax returns are declared in arrears and hence the following year. How much tax will you have to pay? There are two main categories here: Non-residents in Spain from non-EU member states or non-EEA countries: are required to declare income earned in Spain at a general rate of 24%. the applicants’ legal situation but was merely “a preparatory act”. Only when article 50 was completed, formalising the UK’s departure, were the rights of the applicants liable to be affected, it maintained. The European courts however continue to be busy with Brexit matters, as judges in Luxembourg are considering an emergency legal challenge over whether the UK can unilaterally halt Brexit by reversing article 50, the clause that initiated the country’s departure from the EU. The European court of justice head a claim on Tuesday by a cross-party group of six Scottish MPs, MEPs and MSPs that argues politicians at Westminster can stop the process without needing the consent of the other 27 EU member states. The judges are expected to rule quickly given the time-sensitive nature of the issue.

information with Spain, you will be charged a Spanish income tax rate of 19%. In either category, the general rule for fiscal non-residents is that tax is based on their gross Spanish source of notional income (benefit of having an asset), net rental income and on capital gains arising from assets located in Spain. You area non-resident and property owner, what taxes should you pay? Before we dive into it, there is an important rule you should keep in mind. When property is owned by more than one person, each person will be an independent tax payer who will have to declare separate tax returns. The income tax amount will depend on the use of the property: A) Notional income tax on properties in private use Let’s say you were not the owner of the property during the whole year. In this case, you would only pay notional income tax that would apply to the period where you were the actual owner. This same formula would apply if you rent out property. Notional income tax is calculated according to the calendar year – 1st January to the 31st December. B) Income tax on property which is rented out

The rule here is: “non-resident property owners who rent out their property are obliged to declare the total amount received and are taxed over the net income”. Unlike notional income, this kind of tax is declared quarterly as follows: 1st-20th April (1st quarter) 1st-20th July (2nd quarter) 1st-20thOctober (3rd quarter) 1st-20th January (4th quarter) Have you got any questions on nonresident tax? If so, then please do let us know. Are you in a Tax Trap?

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

If you are a UK Expat and are tax resident in Spain with investments in the UK, you may have found that getting a consistent answer as to how these will be treated for tax purposes in Spain and/or the UK is difficult to obtain! I am talking about the chargeable gains, growth, dividends and interest made on your investments either when they are sold, cashed in or kept in UK based investments. The existing double taxation treaty means you would usually pay tax in one country or the other but not both. However; the way Capital Gains (CGT) tax works and is calculated here in Spain is very different to that in the UK! The UK has a CGT allowance of

currently £11,700 per person in the 18/19 tax year, the UK tax year running from the 6th of April to the following 5th of April. Joint UK assets have an allowance per person and apply to each person’s share of the investment or holdings. Trusts have a lower UK allowance, however there is no such CGT allowance in Spain. If you have Unit Trusts, Shares or ISAs, then these will be potentially liable to an annual Spanish Savings tax. If an Investment or asset is sold, potentially UK and/or Spanish CGT is also payable. The Spanish tax year is January 1st to December 31st each year. Spanish Tax residents will also be potentially liable to Spanish CGT on the

same asset although an allowance would be made for any tax already paid in the UK. No consideration will be given for the UK personal CGT allowance, so an additional sum of Spanish Tax may be due. To calculate any liability to Spanish CGT, Spanish Savings Tax and/or UK CGT a few calculations will need to be made. It is therefore crucial to take professional financial advice before any investments or assets are sold or cashed in, since it may be possible to reduce the liability. Therefore holding UK investments for a Spanish Tax resident can be a bit of a tax trap and a complex one to say the least! Trump ramps up migrant issue

PICTURES of nappyclad toddlers in hysterics after being sprayed with tear gas is something you might expect to see from some of the world’s more totalitarian countries. However this is the USA in 2020 and President Trump’s way of ensuring migrants don’t make the crossing from the Mexican border into “his” country. The tear gas was fired at the crowd, men, women and children alike and mainly Hondurans, by US border patrol agents, prompting an outcry from the world and within the US. Trump has variously called people in the migrant caravan criminals, gang members, drug dealers and also implied, without a shred of evidence, that middle east terrorists are mingling with the group. Despite President Trump’s rhetoric most of the migrants - who are effectively refugees at the moment - are by all accounts fleeing abject poverty and violence in their homelands. Many point out that they have a right to seek asylum and, if due

process is followed and they don’t meet the criteria, they can then be refused entry to the USA. Tear-gassing them at the border, however, comes very close to breaking international laws. Trump supporters, of course, love his strongman approach, if you can call attacking threeyear-olds with toxic gas the act of a strongman. Fox News commentator Tomi Lahren, for

example, tweeted “Watching the USA FINALLY defend our borders was the HIGHLIGHT of my Thanksgiving weekend”. (Trump and his supporters REALLY like capitals). His way of governing at the moment appears to be doing whatever it needs to make his fans like him more while turning the rest of the country even further away from him. Where this will end is anyone’s guess, but many think it will not be pretty.

AS people’s obsession with the Red Planet shows no signs of abating, Mars has been in the news for two very different reasons this week. On Friday we were presented with the unusual sight of high-fiving scientists as the InSight spacecraft successfully touched down on the planet. After almost six months hurtling through space, by far the most dangerous part of the journey was the last seven minutes as the craft ploughed through the Martian atmosphere. The 100-kilometre fall meant slowing down from 12,000 mph to nothing in about the time it takes to boil a kettle. Thankfully it made a perfect landing and immediately started beaming back photos. InSight’s mission is to drill down into the planet, finding out what it is made of and possibly if it ever supported life, that

holy grail of all Martian explorers. Meanwhile, eccentric billionaire Elon Musk has talked about plans for his own personal Mars mission saying it comes with a “good chance of death”. His Space X rockets have been several years in development and he claims it will only be a few years before they will be taking people to Mars, with him likely to be one of the first to go. He admits coming back may be more problematic, possibly making his plans of paid space flight unpalatable to the fellow millionaires and billionaires who will be able to afford it. It’s probably also safe to say he won’t be using the strapline “good chance of death” when he gets round to selling the trips.

Missing Brit Alzheimer patient found

Worried family members and police were celebrating earlier this week, when British woman, Norah Garratt, was found four days after going missing from a Benidorm hotel. Sixty-three year old, Norah, an Alzheimer patient from Northampton, had last been seen at around 05.15h on the morning of Saturday, November 24th. She was spotted leaving the Gran Hotel Bali, in the La Cala de Benidorm area of the resort, wearing only denim jeans and a long-sleeved, cream rugby shirt with blue stripes. When Norah left the building, she had no money, credit cards, ID documents, handbag, mobile phone or warm clothing on her person. Soon after her disappearance, her husband, son, daughter and two cousins who were in Benidorm, made an appeal on social media outlets to help find their relative. Several witnesses came forward claiming to have seen someone matching Norah’s description, but these were all timed before Saturday

away from populated areas of the resort into the nearby countryside. Flyers with a recent photo of Norah had been distributed to bars, businesses, tourists and taxi drivers, by family and volunteers, in the hope of people coming forward with new information. Each hour that passed increased the precariousness of the situation, as Norah was described as a scared, confused Alzheimers patient, who only speaks English, but could possibly remember her anniversary date and maiden name, which is Byrne. A post on the page of resident Harry Kroesen, was shared scores of times by concerned Facebook users, moved by the message, which read “NORAH GARRATT is 63 years old and suffering from Alzheimer.... just imagine this was your Grandma, Mother or Auntie... PLEASE HELP! We cannot do this alone.... 3 valuable days already gone......... WE NEED TO FIND HER! HELP!!!!!” One comment by Jacqui Perkins read, “ Please keep your eyes open

in the streets and in parks to find Norah???! Make an extra round TODAY with your dog in more desolate places just to make sure she is not there?!” A coordinated search of the area around the Gran Hotel Bali was organised for the afternoon of last Tuesday 27th November, with volunteers joining the family and police officers in an effort to unearth more clues to Norah’s disappearance. As family members and volunteers gathered to conduct the search, the good news was relayed to the group, explaining that Norah had been found by at 13.00h, by local police, alerted by a resident from La Nucia, who had heard a voice coming from a neighbouring ravine, known as a barranco. The police officers, descending into the ravine and were able to rescue Norah, who although in a confused state, appeared in otherwise good health, despite her four-day ordeal. The search included the participation of Benidorm Local

Police and the Benidorm Fire Brigade who provided several vehicles and an Alfa 1 helicopter. Norah was immediately transferred by the Red Cross/Cruz Roja to the Marina Baixa Hospital in Villajoyosa, where she remains under observation. Slaughterhouse for Altea´s trays The

Photo: The new Altea animal centre can shelter up to four dogs and six cats in comfortable cages.

Abandoned dogs and cats in Altea, now have a dedicated shelter, thanks to the conversion of a former slaughterhouse, set up by the town council and a local animal charity in the town. However, the Punt D’Acollida Animal centre, which opened recently is not a centre for members of the public to take stray animals, but moreover, a shelter where police can transfer animals either taken or reported to them using the normal methods. The new centre can accommodate up to four dogs and six cats in comfortable cages, with adjacent exercise area, for between two and five days, before being transferred to the main animal protection shelter in Benidorm. President of the Peluts de la Marina charity, Mari Paz Solbes, explained, “we have been demanding a facility of this type for a long time, because having a shelter is very difficult, but in

the end, the city council picked up the baton and we are very grateful for this decision.” In the surrounding area, only Benidorm and La Nucia, operate similar facilities, although, prior to 2012, the local police station in Villa Gadea had cages for holding animals. “These did not meet the adequate conditions,” said the president, but at the new reception shelter, “the first in the region, the abandoned animals will

be better served,” before stressing that, “it is not a place where citizens can leave the animals they find abandoned or the litters of bitches that they own and do not want.” The old slaughterhouse, which is situated adjacent to the Rio Algar river, closed in 1984, owing to unsanitary conditions, but for the previous fifty years, cows, pigs, sheep, goats and horses, were delivered from as far afield as Murcia and Gandia, before being sold onto local butchers. Reiterating the procedures Altea citizens should follow with abandoned animals, town health councillor Diego Martinez, explained that local police should be contacted in the first instance. “Municipal veterinarian, Ana Ferrando, will be in charge of the revision and care of the animals, and will take care of it’s transfer to the animal protection centre in Benidorm if the owner is not found”, he said. Anyone wishing to report an abandoned animal in Altea should call the local police on 96 584 55 11, “who will then arrange the transfer to the new animal shelter” explained Martinez.

Postbag What an absolute mess the British politicians are making of what to do with Brexit, with personal petty self-interest dominating their thoughts, rather than what might be good for the country as a whole. What Theresa May has come up with is not a bad compromise, and it does secure our rights over here, which is of most interest to me, rather than this endless boring talk of backstops here and there. The UK was left split after the referendum vote in 2016, and her deal seems to me to be the only rational course open to avoid a disastrous cliff-edge drop out of the EU, and all that will mean to us in Spain, and back home. Harry Peace, Denia.

The non-stop frenzy of Christmas adverts on UK television is driving me bonkers, and thank heavens that we have a more measured view of the festive season in Spain. Old folks home “humiliating and degrading”

THE Ministry of Health has received so many complaints about conditions in a pensioners care home in Calpe that they have opened an investigation. The centre in question is La Saleta, a private establishment that also has public spaces at a subsidised rate. The complaints, usually filed by relatives, include poor diet, lack of basic hygiene and “humiliating, degrading” treatment of some residents. Lack of staff, both experienced and inexperienced, seems to be at the heart of the problem and as well as the Ministry the National Police, Guardia Civil and Calpe Town Hall have all received complaints, not to mention the centre itself. One denuncia about hygiene was accompanied by a film of a rat wandering around the home; others have posted pictures of unappetising looking food which allegedly is often either burnt or stone cold. Another person said they went to visit their mother and found her lying on the floor, unattended and sobbing uncontrollably. Most worryingly perhaps there have been alleged errors with medication, some patients having to be referred to hospital to receive the correct medication. Relatives

Trend watch - Autumn & Winter 2018 Women in Spain are opting for a simple yet effective look this winter. Start your outfit by choosing your statement piece/pieces. Fur coats and capes, big chunky boots, and the colour red are all fundamental to the fashionistas r o a m i n g the streets in Barcelona,

arguably the fashion capital of Spain. Follow this up by layering on black and neutral pieces such as mom jeans, floaty skirts, and tights. Animal prints are also making a comeback this winter, especially leopard spots. Popular items in this print are boots, coats, and accessories like scarves and snoods. With androgynous fashion on the rise and more designers offering unisex clothing, it’s no wonder that

men and women’s fashion trends are overlapping. In men’s fashion, alongside classic black, khaki is proving a popular choice colour for staple pieces this season. Layer up black trousers, jumpers, and a black or neutral jacket. Swap the women’s statement boots and coats for hats and man bags, and you’ve got yourself an outfit on point with the Spanish winter trends that will also keep you warm!

Is suncream important in winter? Sunscreen is a necessity in Spain, especially in the summer. It helps reduce the risk of developing skin cancer, plus most of the other problems that come with prolonged sun exposure, such as premature ageing and sun spots. However, these risks do not go away in the winter. While it’s easy to assume that the winter sun is harmless because it’s not ‘hot’, that’s far from the truth. There are two types of UV rays that sunscreen helps to

protect against, UVA and UVB. The ideal type of sunscreen to look for is ‘broad-spectrum’, as this protects against both UVA and UVB rays, while other formulas of sunscreen predominantly only protect against one type of UV ray. The colder months can dry your skin out making it more prone to damage. Combat this by making sure that you use a moisturiser containing SPF, as this will not only keep your skin hydrated and make it less

susceptible to sun damage, but paired with a broad-spectrum sunscreen, will keep you protected all year round. Always remember to keep your skin covered, and top up on your SPF protection throughout the day. While sunscreen advertises to protect your skin, it is not a barrier, and some rays will still get through. It is also important to remember that UV rays can go through glass, so even if you’re basking in the sun from the safety of

your home, you should still consider using sun protection Shop around at your local pharmacy or perfumery to find the perfect sun protection for you.

PREGNANT? WHY YOU SHOULD HAVE A FLU JAB

It is strongly recommended that all pregnant woman should receive a ‘Flu Jab’ as protection for both Mother and Baby. There is strong evidence that pregnant women have a much higher chance of developing complications should they get flu, especially those in the latter stages of pregnancy. One of the most common complications is bonchitis which in turn can develop into pneumonia.

Other less common infections include: • Otitis media (middle ear infection) • Septic shock (an infection in the blood that causes a severe drop in blood pressure) • Encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) • Meningitis (infection of the brain and spinal cord) When a pregnant woman contracts flu there is an increased risk of premature labour, low birth weight and stillbirth. For the newborn there is even an increase in the risk of neonatal death in the first week of life. For most people the thought of having a flu jab whilst pregnant is frightening and we are always told to avoid medication etc. However, extensive studies have shown that a flu vaccine is safe to administer any time during pregnancy from the first weeks right up until the expected due date. The vaccine also poses no risk to those who are breastfeeding. When a pregnant woman has a flu vaccine there is the added benefit that she will pass on some protection to her baby which will last for the first few months of his or her life. So……..if you are pregnant (or in the process of trying for a baby) now is the time to speak to your Midwife and book your flu jab!

Spain to Ban Alternative Medicine

Earlier this month, the Spanish government announced a plan to ban alternative medicine from medical centres. Although there was no exact definition of alternative medicine given, acupuncture and homeopathy were given as examples of the type of treatment facing the ban. Other alternative treatments likely to be banned from medical centres include aromatherapy and naturopathy. The statement, released by the Spanish government, says it plans to eliminate all alternative medicine from health centres, where all treatment is supposed to be given by a recognised m e d i c a l

professional. They argue that because there is no objective scientific proof that these treatments work, they are potentially harmful if chosen as an addition or alternative to scientifically backed medical treatment. There are also plans to ban alternative medicine from being taught in Spanish universities. This comes off of the back of a victim of alternative medicines failings. Mario Rodriguez, a 21 year old leukaemia patient who died after replacing his hospital treatment with vitamins supplied by a naturopath. His father, Julian Rodriguez, quoted him saying “Dad, I made a mistake” on his deathbed.

The cattle owner, Geoff Pearson, also revealed the reason behind Knickers’ name: a close friendship with a Brahman steer, called Bra. The priciest the Balearic Islands. of flat and apartment sales since before the financial crisis. Real estate company Pisos. com said sales are set to exceed half a million for the first time since 2006, the peak of the housing sale boom in Spain. The figure is 13% up in 2017, although next year the firm are predicting a levelling off rather than further big increases. Part of the reason for the jump in sales is there has been a glut of relatively cheap housing still available and people

Sharers beware

AS getting on the property ladder becomes increasingly difficult for youngsters in much of Europe, many of them are turning to flatshares for their first taste of living away from home. However, there are a number of pitfalls and a recent survey has identified the most common. The biggest issue is rental payment and it’s vital that everyone knows exactly what they’re paying and when before trouble starts. You also need some ground rules on visitors, not everyone will want to live in party central. If people are staying over, respect others privacy and remember friends and partners add to utility bills. Chores need

to be shared equally, try and find out if, for example, one person likes cooking while another is happy doing the cleaning. Pets need to be agreed upon, don’t just turn up with a cat one day and find that your flatmate has allergies. Other issues include the temperature of a property, decor and cleanliness. Be aware that if you live with someone who is on a very different work or study schedule to you this may also cause issues. In summary, agree what you can beforehand and get things legally and in writing, especially key issues like rental agreements.

Sustainable cities

Photo: Madrid, Spain’s most sustainable city.

SPAIN’S two largest cities, Madrid and Barcelona, both feature highly in a list of the most sustainable places in the world to live. Madrid is ranked 21st overall while Barcelona comes in at 28th on the 2018 Sustainable Cities Index compiled by Arcadis. They look at several factors including environmental issues (CO2 emissions, energy use etc.),

green spaces, social factors (crime rates, education etc.) and the economy. Both cities score relatively poorly on the economic front but socially they are both high, while Barcelona has the second highest life expectancy of any global city. The top three in the list were London, Stockholm and Edinburgh.

Mind the generation gap As the wealth gap between the baby boomer generation (born between 1946 and 1964) and their children grows increasingly, many are helping their offspring get onto the property ladder, particularly in many of the world’s increasingly unaffordable cities. In London, for example, 85% of parents aged 55 or over have given financial help to their children when they purchased their first

property. Even a third of grandparents chipped in to help out in a city where the average first time buyer house now costs about €400,00, or 13 times the average income in the capital. Passing on money at or near retirement is a good way of avoiding inheritance tax, but experts warn people not to underestimate the amount of cash they will need in retirement, especially as life expectancy increases.

The Fonts are naturally full

The recent spells of heavy rain that brought the start of Winter to the Marina Baixa region, were good news for one of its top tourist attractions. For more than a year, the Fonts d’Algar waterfalls, on the outskirts of Callosa d’en Sarria have been unable to flow naturally, without help

by Andy Mansell

from engines provided by the Bombeo of Pozos de Saco. However, the intense periods of heavy downpours this month, have helped to fill the natural wells of the falls, allowing them to flow naturally for the first time

since November 2017. An announcement from Callosa town hall in conjunction with the Costa Blanca Tourist agency explained that, “In the last month, 100 L / m2 have been registered and last Monday, November 19th, a total of 54 l / m2, were recorded resulting in the water of the sources

of the Algar flowing from Natural form.” With more rains likely to fall during the remaining winter months, visitors to one of the most popular visitor attractions for summer tourists to our coastal resorts can look forward to an abundance of chilly water to bathe in.

NEW 2019 Audi A1 The 2019 Audi A1 is fun, satisfying to drive and an upmarket take on the often practical and benign world of small hatchbacks. However, while the new A1 has plenty to offer image conscious buyers, it struggles to back up its sharp styling with true premium substance. The all-new Audi A1 is based on the same mechanical underpinnings as the Volkswagen Polo and SEAT Ibiza, but sits at a much higher price point. Buyers get the choice of three turbocharged petrol engines. The A1 is instantly more involving to drive than the Polo, with its firmly weighted steering and suspension providing lots of feedback that makes it easy to feel at one with stylish little hatch. Opt for the tauter sport suspension – standard on S line models – and the A1 gets surprisingly close to the Fiesta ST, with agile and grippy handling. The A1 benefits from similar levels of useful cabin space as the VW Polo. The boot, for example, is one of the largest in this class. The A1 also gets five-doors as standard, which means you don’t have to worry about passengers leaving muddy footprints on the seat backs as they climb in and out. Audi has clearly had a good go at giving the cabin a premium makeover, by redesigning the dashboard and adding a scattering of softtouch materials. But you don’t have to look very hard to find some disappointing, cheap and hard plastics. The interior covers of the doors, for example, look like they have been

lifted straight from the Ibiza. The A1 also feels less spacious, with the inflated dashboard and gearbox housing impeding leg space for those in the front. High spec models get large sport seats and these squeeze cabin space even further.

The A1 is extremely wellequipped as standard though. Entry-level SE models get LED headlights, heat-insulating glass, electric rear windows and a digital instrument cluster, along with a smart 8.8-inch colour infotainment touchscreen. Top spec models

also get leather upholstery, LED ambient light and the same 10-inch infotainment system as the Audi A8. Visually, the Audi A1 is stunning. It’s also great to drive, with sharp handling and one of the best three-cylinders in the business. But there will be many who feel more than a little short changed by the disappointing cabin quality and high list price.

UK Automotive workforce the best in Europe

The UK automotive industry has the most adaptable employees in Europe – despite the challenges ahead according to a new report. The boss of Toyota Motor Europe’s London office says action is needed to address skills shortages and boost investment in research and development following Brexit. This report by the Automotive Council, a partnership between the automotive industry and government, surveyed the workforce of British automotive companies using eight key performance indicators. It ranked how attractive the UK is for car firms to invest in compared with other countries. The top position in Europe went to the UK. Second overall behind the US, with strong labour relations, a willingness of workers to adapt to changing markets and flexibility in their work patterns cited as

the key advantages. The report did, however, cite several risks to future competitiveness, including the level of government investment into R&D, the shortage of skilled engineers and the possible decline of political stability following Brexit. The report highlighted that it was essential to attract and

develop new skills so that the UK industry can lead the shift to electrification, digitisation and autonomy. Toyota Motor Europe’s London office boss and chair of the Automotive Council’s business environment and skills group, Tony Walker, said the report showed how the UK industry’s workforce “helped drive the sector’s success.” “We have a hard-won reputation for developing and making highquality, cutting-edge vehicles, engines and components, supported by strong collaboration with government through the Automotive Council. “During this period of profound change, that collaboration will be more important than ever. The focus now must be on attracting and nurturing the right skills to meet our ambitions, and on securing a Brexit deal that delivers the political stability needed to attract future investment.”

Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious Christmas Looks like BBC1 chat show host Graham Norton has the ‘Christmas Coup’ this year as news emerges that almost the entire cast of the new Disney movie, Mary Poppins Returns, will grace his, hopefully extendable, sofa on Friday December 21st. One of the most anticipated film releases of the year, Poppins is due to open in the UK on the same day as Norton’s show and two days earlier in the US, with Spain opening dates in the new

year. The magical nanny herself, played by Emily Blunt, the new lamplighter (‘Every day’s an ‘oleedaywiv Mary’) Lin-Manuel Miranda and the grown-up Banks children, Ben Whishaw and Emily Mortimer, will all make an appearance, plus to cap it all off with a camp touch, 80’s legends Boy George and Culture Club are going to perform their new single ‘Life’. Phew ……. There’s a date for your diary.

Noel’s water is grander A social media storm has been whipped up this week, in the form of Hurricane Noel Edmonds‘ ripped torso being paraded under the jungle shower in I’m a Celebrity. The

Deal or No Deal host is nearing his 70th birthday, but looks years younger, thanks to his youthful appearance and toned body. I’d probably do something with my hair if I was him, put a few coloured lights in it and you’d have a fabulous Christmas tree to brighten up the camp. However, even presenter Declan Donnelly mentioned the sexy sixty nine year old in a tweet: “Noel looks fit in a vest” #ImACeleb, wrote Dec. Apparently, Mr Edmonds has never been touched with a Botox prick and puts his physique and mental agility down to a strict regime of exercise and diet. Now, stay with me, because it all gets a little bizarre, but very interesting, when you delve into what the regime entails. He meditates regularly, avoids red meat,

has several health shakes a week and a mainly “alkaline” diet. So far, so normal, but Noel, who turns 70 on December 22nd, also exercises very slowly in darkness for an hour a week while listening to electronic pulses. Ok, understandable, most people are best seen in the dark when they exercise, but he also sits on an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) mat encouraged by his wife Liz The £2,000 pad supposedly stimulates “cellular resonance” with “low intensity and frequency pulsed electromagnetic fields”,helping to boost the immune system and circulation, improve sleep and raise energy levels. Noel is also a convert to “Grander Water”, which

Following last weekend’s underwhelming semi final, X Factor bosses are pulling out all the stops to boost their dwindling viewing figures for Saturday and Sundays final shows. Benidorm’s favourite son, the two annoying teenage girls (who survived instead of the best female singer) and the sweet Irish boy all got the boot last week …….. so who’s left? Well, if you’re still interested and if you are, you’re definitely in the minority, the final three contestants are Dalton, who’s been the nailed on favourite since the beginning of time, Scarlett, who seems to have been around forever and

scouse comeback boy Anthony ….. everybody shout FIX!! And that’s been the problem with this year’s contest, which seems to have dissolved into a shambles, with accusations of manipulation by producers Rule changes from Simon, the close pre-show relationship between Louis Tomlinson and Anthony and charges of nepotism between Ayda and Robbie Williams who always voted to keep each others acts in, have left viewers, angry and peed off. Stars lined up to appear on the two show final are Nile Rodgers and Chic, Ellie Goulding, George Ezra, James Arthur and Anne-Marie (singing

Rewrite the Stars from The Greatest Showman ….yes!!) and everybody’s favourite ‘Old Man/ Boyband’, Take That. But who will duet with the contestants? Well, my guess is Dalton and Nile Rodgers or George Ezra, Scarlett with Ellie Goulding or Anne-Marie and Anthony with all of them and Louis! All will be revealed this weekend and as for Robbie Williams joining his former bandmates for a song? Don’t hold your breath, he’s probably got far too many other commitments to be arsed with showing up …… I’m sure Nile Rodgers will step in though!

Anthony Russell, Scarlett Moffatt and Dalton Harris will contest this weekend’s X Factor

purports to have been restructured into its “natural source state”, of which, he drinks five litres a day and even fills his swimming pool with it. Now, we’re getting into stranger and let’s be frank, expensive territory, which may not be a problem for multi millionaire Edmonds, but a bit on the pricey side for you and me. I mean, I baulk at paying 22 cents for a couple of litres of Mercadona’s finest, but with his I’m a Celeb fee reported to be around half a million quid, I guess the campmate can afford plenty of 12 dollar bottles of grand water and a few electronic pads to sit his toned arse on.

Shawn’s ‘gay’ rumours take their toll

It’s easy to assume that in our enlightened, Instagram-fuelled, social media obsessed world, coming out as gay, would be an easy thing to do. Of course, the opposite is true and young people of all sexual persuasions and genders struggle to identify themselves, with so much prejudice still around. Take successful Canadian singer, Shawn Mendes, for instance, who has had a string of worldwide hits since he started showcasing his music on the Vine sharing site five years ago (remember ‘Stitches’?). Twenty year old Shawn, recently opened up to Rolling Stone magazine in an interview, where he addressed the gay rumours that have dogged his career from the start. “I’d like to say I don’t care about it, but that’s not true”, he told the magazine on the subject of the “massive, massive thing for the last five years about me being gay”. Since his rise to fame in the last few years, there have been plenty of jokes and memes about Shawn, which have suggested that he’s secretly gay, and hiding his sexuality. He said: “In the back of my heart, I feel like I need to go be seen with someone — like a girl — in public, to prove to people that I’m not gay. Even though in my heart I know that it’s not a

bad thing. Shawn goes on to say that, in fact it’s no one’s business but his own, whether he identifies as straight, gay or bi and is quick to point out that if he was actually a young gay man, struggling to come to terms with his sexuality, it would be even worse. In 2016, he felt compelled to address the issue in a tweet, in which he wrote: “I thought, ‘you f***ing guys are so lucky I’m not actually gay and terrified of coming out,’ ” he continued. “That’s something that kills people. That’s how sensitive it is. “Do you like the songs? Do you like me? Who cares if I’m gay?” Well said Shawn, it takes guts to take on the internet trolls face to face and by the way your last single Lost in Japan is on my Spotify rewind.

A black-andwhite crossword-style grid is set up for each quote, with a number of letters “hovering” above each column. Your task is to “drop” each of those letters into the appropriate square in each column, until the entire quote is revealed. All punctuation (commas, periods, dashes, etc.) has been removed. The format was medal, not everbody’s favourite game but at last the weather has improved and we had lots of warm sunshine. We welcomed 5 guests, George Smith, Mike Jones, Chris Anderson, Andrew Gibson and Barry Tilby. .Chris walked off with guest prize with a good score of 76. The main competition results were as follows: Ist was Shaun O’Gorman with a great score of 71

playing off 4.3. Shaun also won the Lowest Gross Score prize today with 77. Needed a bag to take home all the bottles and the trophy! Well done! 2nd was Bob (Gday Mate) Jenkins with a good score of 73 playing off 17.6 3rd was Jean Taylor with 74 playing off 14.7 4th was Paul Sankey with 75 playing 15.3 5th was Malcolm Wise also with 75 playing off 9.9 6th was Dave Phillips, our Captain with 76 playing off 31.6

Three of the top four places in Preferente Group Four are occupied by Alicante-based sides, with third-placed CD Almoradi breaking the sequence. The Vega Baja side recorded a three-two home win over Elda(captains pictured at kick off with referee Emilio Espigares Jiminez), where the visitors were unlucky to get nothing after losing to a last minute Manu penalty. Almoradi now go to sixth-placed Callosa Deportiva in a local clash, on the back of Callosa’s two-one derby win at CD Thader, who in turn go to Alicante University this week. Intercity Sant Joan lead the table, after their two-one victory at Redovan, and this weekend play UD Ilicitana.

Second-placed Hercules B recorded a two-nil win at UD Horadada, and now have a match against in-form Villajoyosa, who thrashed Aspe, 5-1. Horadada meanwhile are at Elda this Saturday afternoon. CFI Alicante are fourth in the standings after a laborious one-nil result at bottom side Villena, and next welcome struggling CD Torrevieja on Sunday, with Torry gone down one-nil at home to Alicante University last weekend. CD Benidorm got their third win of the campaign, after beating Orihuela B, threenil, but they remain-second bottom, with a trip to Benferri to come on Saturday.

Nearest the Pin on Hole 5 was Penny Barden with 2.42m and on the 16th Ken Miller with 3.1m. John Guest was very pleased to win the only 2 today. Next week we have a Stableford Competition and also we have our AGM after the game or before the game if the weather is bad. ALFAZ FANTASY FOOTBALL LEAGUE

With the last International Break over for this Year, we now have a long run of Premier League Fixtures till next March which means business as usual for the Alfaz Fantasy Football League. The rest must have done all the teams good as the 9 Premier League games produced the Highest average score so far this Season with the average score reaching almost 34 points. Altogether they gave the A.F.F.L 25 goals, 6 clean sheets, only 24 yellow cards and 2 red ones. The Naughty Boys were Liverpool’s Jordon Henderson and Leicester City’s diving Fox James Maddison who were both flirted after receiving two yellows. Pauline’s Vodka Army is certainly on the march as they have now moved to within 1 point of the present leaders of the Alfaz Fantasy Football League John’s team Wee Aggies. Fulham’s former Newcastle’s striker Aleksander Mitrovic and Liverpool’s young full-back Trent Alexander- Arnold both scored 11 points which

contributed to Pauline’s team hitting a top score of 67 points this week. Barbra’s XI moved up 2 places to 3rd while Adam’s team Equipo Sin Hombre also advanced 4 places to reach the 4th spot. Down at the other end of the table Mark’s team, Inter Rubber have moved out of the relegation zone and left Kim’s Ginger United trailing Gazza’s Upside Team by 10 points. William & Henry made it 3 weeks at the top of the Junior League by holding on to a fragile 5 point lead over Harley’s Ginger Ninjar. A.J’s Blue Moon F, C, is still well in contention in 3rd place while at the other end of the scale Fleetwood Gian had a good week scoring 38 points but it still wasn’t enough to get them off the bottom spot as they are still 46 points away from Tom’s team Real City. In our Mark Carter Ladies Section Pauline’s Vodka Army have taken a strong grip at the top by increasing their advantage over Barbra’s XI to 30 points. Linda’s

Team Tapas are clinging on to 3rd place but they are coming under pressure from Winnie’s Le Hombre Rioja who are in a rich vein of form due to her all Liverpool team. No change at the bottom with Kim’s Ginger United taking a fancy to being over the trap door as they have been there for the last 4 weeks. It was a high scoring week in our Across the Costa’s Golden Boot League which enabled Graham’s team Lloris & Gromitt to become the 8th team to reach the Summit of this very competitive Division. They replaced Bill’s East Fifers who slipped down to 2nd and are only 6 points behind. Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling and Liverpool’s Mo Salah joined Chelsea’s Edin Hazard at the top of the scoring charts in this Section with them all on 49 points. Liz’s team Cookies Crew could do with them in her side as they have been struggling for points in the last few weeks which has left them 18 points adrift of Dave team The Hatters who have been dropping

like a stone in the last few weeks. Pauline’s Vodka Army was this weeks top scoring side with a tally of 67 points which qualifies them for a place in the pot for our Monthly Wine Draw along with our lowest scoring team which was Ross’s Casper’s Bar who only managed 6 points in what was a top scoring week, mind you he did have Liverpool’s Jordon Henderson in his line-up who contributed a minus 5 to his total. Mike’s Super Saints won the Draw for October. Pauline’s Vodka Army doesn’t look like taking any prisoners in our Champion of Champions League as they have a mega 49 point lead over Joe’s Keith Lard F.C.who won the Fantasy League 3 Years ago. Down at the foot of the table Dave’s team, The Hatters have a lot of ground to make up on Pam’s People if they are going to get off the bottom spot, the distance now a formidable 36 points. Manager of the Month for November has been kindly sponsored the Brew Rock in Albir which is

situated right on the front with super views. They provide Music Daily as well as serving up an excellent A La Carte Menu. This Month’s lucky winner is Pauline’s Vodka Army who has had a fantastic Month clocking up a massive tally of 164 points in 3 weeks. Adam’s Equipo Sin Hombre was the runners-up. Gary’s team Crap on a Canary won this weeks Breakfast for 2 at the Bar Code in Alfaz when his team moved up the most places from number 127th to 91st in the main League. By the way, Gary works at the Bar Code so he won’t have far to travel for this super Good Olde English Breakfast. There were 2 replays in our Weekender K.O.Cup Competition which saw Tommy’s Quantrill’s Raider beat Northern Reds by 5325. The other tie was won by Kemp United who disposed of one of our Junior teams Baines on Toast by 4518. The Draw for the 2nd Round will soon be up on our website and the ties will take place in the New Year.

Englands whitewash

England’s cricketers held their nerve to complete a first series whitewash in Sri Lanka with a tense 42run victory in the third Test in Colombo on Monday. England’s 3-0 victory is the first time they have won every Test in a series in Sri Lanka and is only the third time - after India last year and Australia in 2004 - that a touring side have beaten the hosts by that scoreline. England’s captain Joe Root said:- “It has been a fabulous tour. It has been a complete team performance throughout the whole trip.”

“Everyone has contributed in some shape or form and that is the most pleasing and impressive thing.” Next year brings three Tests away to the West Indies starting in January and then one against Ireland ahead of the big summer clash at home to the Australians to try to regain the Ashes.

Campbells challenge by Neil Mortimer

Former England defender Sol Campbell has got himself a baptism of fire in his first managerial job, as he has taken the reins of beleaguered League Two side Macclesfield Town. The 44-year-old has taken charge with the Silkmen five points adrift at the foot of the English Football League. Campbell played 73 times for England and appeared in six major tournaments. He also won several domestic honours, including Premier League titles with Arsenal in 2001-02 and 2003-04. Campbell said that he was pleased to get the job and that his players were “up for it”.

Mark of respect Formula One title rivals Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel took the opportunity to swap their F1 helmets following the conclusion of the season in Abu Dhabi last Sunday. Hamilton and Vettel have fought each other for the drivers’ title in the last two seasons, with the Mercedes driver coming out on top in both years. Despite the pair’s intense rivalry, they have maintained a high level of respect off-

track, often defending each other when responding to questions posed by the media. In a video released by Mercedes on the team’s Twitter account, it shows the pair swapping helmets with each other following the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, which Hamilton won with Vettel coming home in second. “This is kind of an honorary thing that drivers do,”

Hamilton said in the video. “This is the highest kind of regard of respect that we can have as drivers, this is like our jerseys.” Vettel, who hasn’t won the title since during his days with Red Bull in 2013, added: “Well done. Five championships is a great achievement and I hope I stop you from any more.” Hamilton’s title triumph in 2018 means he now has five titles to his name, compared to Vettel who has four.

BRITAIN’S Tyson Fury takes on Deontay Wilder in the early hours of this Sunday morning for the WBC heavyweight title, with many experts predicting a close contest in Los Angeles. The Staples Center will host the fight which is expected to start at around 5.30 am(Spanish time), with organisers expecting a capacity crowd of 17,500. Fury said he will remain flexible in his approach to taking on Wilder, insisting he will be prepared to “box, fight” or “go in the trenches”.

by Alex Trelinski

“I stand here sincere, I ain’t here for no money, a payday. I’m here to win,” Fury said. “I’ve never been as fit or ready. In all my career, I’ve never had two wins back-to-back in the same year like this year. I’ve always had massive inactivity. “I’m going to win this fight, one million per cent I will overcome him and win.” Wilder told reporters he will knock out Fury on Saturday,

adding: “It’s solely my time.” Ex-British world champion Lennox Lewis said:- “If it goes the distance then it belongs to Tyson Fury. If it’s a short fight it will belong to Deontay Wilder. This is an epic and most-unpredictable showdown. I can’t wait for this fight.” And legend Mike Tyson called it this way:- “Although Wilder’s punch is strong, nothing can compare to the mental strength Fury has shown both in and out of the ring. It’ll be a close call, but I think Fury’s got a true fighting chance.”
