Deadly painkiller finally acted on
NOLOTIL, a painkiller which can have serious and even lethal effects for people of Northern European ethnicity has been been banned from being prescribed to
British and Irish tourists by the Spanish Medicine Agency. The directive has been issued to all healthcare bodies and any prescriptions of it to ex-pats in Spain will also come with severe restrictions including background health
checks. The issue first came to light after expatriates and some tourists had died or become severely ill with the cause being traced back to Nolotil which had attacked their immune system. Earlier this year Alicante’s Marina Salud advised
health professionals to stop prescribing the drug to people from Britain, Ireland and Scandinavia. Nolotil, also also sold as Metamizole, is already banned from sale in the UK, US and most of Europe. by Simon Russell

Can I keep my ISA & Premium Bonds if I’m a Spanish Resident?
The short answer to this is ‘yes’.It is a question I get asked regularly and whilst the answer to this question is yes, the answer to ‘Should I keep them?’would bedifferent as ISA’s and Premium bonds (in fact the majority of NS&I products) are more hassle than they are worth when you leave the UK. Around two years ago, I met with a potential client who had been living in Spain for over 6 years. While living in the UK they had a financial adviser who had rightly maximised their annual ISA allowance meaning they were able to invest their savings tax free, and in addition to this they also had a modest amount of Premium Bonds. The first thing I pointed out to the client is that NS&I(National Savings and Investments), are a state-owned savings bank in the UK and whilst you can keep these products open should you move overseas, you cannot pay into them and they no longer offer any tax benefits. This means that a £25 premium bondwinor a 0.5% annual gain would mean a costly trip to your Spanish accountant to declare the gains. To make matters worse, the Premium Bond prize
pot has recently been reduced to a paltry 1.25% of the total holdings, with each £1 invested having a 30,000 to 1 chance of winning that minimum prize of £25.
Over the last 2 years she received just 0.5% from her ISA and 2 £25 prizes, all of which she had to declare to the Spanish tax authorities. She also had to put them on her overseas asset declaration, the Modelo 720. Her accountancy fees during that period were over 6 times her gains. Since the introduction of Common Reporting

Grace given AIR CARRIER Ryanair says that they have allowed a “grace period” lasting until the end of November for their new hand luggage policy, which came into force last week. The Irish budget operator says that are allowing some flexibility until passengers ‘get used to’ the system. Unless travellers pay euros for priority boarding,

the popular larger size wheelie bags have to be checked in as hold luggage. An added twist is that only first 95 passengers making a booking for a flight can opt for priority boarding. Ryanair’s marketing manager Kenny Jacobs claims feedback from travellers has been ‘positive’
a n d that their new policy is ‘fair’ and ‘transparent’. Check-in lanes at key Ryanair facilities like Stansted were said to be producing large queues after last Thursday’s introduction of the luggage change, with complaints reported from many travellers. Meanwhile Italy’s antitrust authority recently launched an investigation as to whether the new policy is legal.

described the biker’s action as very brave with it being such a busy road. However she has not been able to thank the man personally and has launched the appeal. She knew he was driving a dark 125cc bike and was wearing black or blue clothing. To date over 30,000 people have shared the unusual request.

VALENCIA has been identified as one of the centres of a dating scam that police believe has netted over 2 million euros and may be much more. 26 people have been arrested in the city this week, including three of the gang’s ringleaders. The remaining defendants were thought to be “mules” who took actions such as opening bank accounts. It was one of these accounts that first attracted suspicion from bank staff as it was receiving large sums of cash from places like Switzerland, the US, Sweden and Finland. Suspecting money laundering or similar the authorities were informed by the bank and the National Police decided to open an investigation. They tracked the transfers down to people who had thought they were donating cash to a romantic partner they had met on-line. In reality the cash was making it’s way to the pockets of the gangs ringleaders, some based in Nigeria as well as those in

Spain. The bank accounts were also being used to launder money for one of the better known internet scams the “dead relative who has left you a fortune” con. At least six people from around the globe have been identified as being victims of the various swindles but this may be the tip of the iceberg. A property search also found a bank card counterfeiting machine, 85 blank cash cards, computers and €29,000 in cash.

Shooting threats reignite hunting debate
AN ecological group visiting the Rabassa lagoons near Alicante city have said they were threatened with guns this week by hunters who were also in the area. The group, from the Friends of the Wetlands of South Alicante (AHSA) said hunters intentionally fired shots in the air and close to them, forcing them to
leave the area. An AHSA spokesman has called for changes in the law to ban hunters from the lagoons, writing to both the Environment Department and the Alicante City Council. Currently hunting is more or less a free for all, making it both dangerous to visitors and environmentally damaging, said the letters.
BRIT IN COVE DEATH
A BRITISH man drowned on Wednesday while snorkelling at a cove in Benitatxell. The 51 year-old’s body was found late on Wednesday afternoon after a friend raised the alarm, with the Guardia Civil confirming that he was a holidaymaker and that they were told that he was an asthma sufferer. He vanished during a swim at Cala dels Testos, which is accessed via a path which follows a river bed through a canyon.
by Alex Tre;inski
His friend said that they had gone for a swim and also to go snorkelling, and lost sight of the unnamed British national, and when he did not reappear, the emergency services were called. A maritime rescue team from Javea sailed to the area and launched a search for the missing man, and found his body once daylight had receded, and took it to Javea.

13 people have been arrested in Murcia City on suspicion of using black magic to coerce young Brazilian transsexuals into prostitution and drug dealing. The National Police said that they had busted the crime ring, arresting citizens from Colombia, Brazil, Peru, Spain, and Romania. The traffickers were led by a Brazilian national living in Spain who preyed on “vulnerable” transgender youths and trafficked them illegally overseas. The authorities were able to make the arrests after after one of the trafficked victims went to the police

back in February, saying “he had got to Spain in an irregular manner with the help of another Brazilian national.” Police also came across “effects related to Santería [an Afro-Caribbean voodoolike religion which includes aspects of Catholicism] and black magic” — which investigators believe were used to coerce the Brazilians. The Murcia case is the latest in a whole string of incidents involving victims from Africa and South America being lured to Spain with false promises and black magic threats.

Facebook foils fraudsters
A social media post played a major part in the conviction of four people this week after they had tried to claim compensation for a
by Simon Russell
holiday in Benidorm. Michael Jameson along with Jane, Claire and Janet Weir had stayed at the Magic
Rock Gardens in 2015 on a package deal booked through Jet2. After the break they had put in the claim
saying their holiday had been ruined by food poisoning. They said in their signed account that they had suffered from diarrhoea and severe stomach pain. If Jet2 had been found liable they could have been saddled with a bill for about 45,000 pounds in compensation and costs. However posts on Facebook from Janet Weir when arriving
back in the UK said “it was the best holiday ever, lovely hotel, food and brilliant company. We didn’t want to come home”. Daughters Jane and Claire responded to the post by saying what a great time they also had. The hotel also had bar records showing the group were ordering food, spirits and cocktails at times when they claimed to be laid up in bed. The judge in
Liverpool Crown Court described the evidence as “little short of overwhelming” before fining the foursome 750 pounds each and sentencing them to a three month suspended prison sentence. Jet2 also welcomed the ruling, saying they have worked hard at tackling the recent surge of false sickness claims and this can only serve to deter fraudsters.

Getting the Brits back over
DELEGATES from the Valencian Communities Tourist Board are going to be in London next week for the World Travel Marketing Fair which starts on Monday. After what most would concede was a disappointing year for most of the Costa Blanca’s resorts, their main goal will be how can they attract the British back. Most agree the issue is the return to the tourist sector of the likes of Turkey, Egypt and Tunisia after years of issues about security.
by Simon Russell
These countries are offering packages that the Costa’s simply can’t compete with such as 380 pounds for a weeks all inclusive at a five star hotel - prices that if local hotels here tried to match would lose them money. However the British remain the largest sector of tourists to most resorts in this part of the world and it is this loyalty and connection that the delegates will be trying to build on.

Cloners caught
THE NATIONAL POLICE have arrested 19 people involved in cloning credit cards, including a man who had previously been found guilty of helping to finance the 9/11 terror attacks. The 49-year-old Algerian had served a prison sentence

in Spain for using cloned credit cards to help fund the 2001 attacks on the World Trade Centre in New York and the Pentagon in Washington D.C. The name of the man was
not released by authorities. He and another 18 people were detained in an operation in Madrid. The authorities said that before the gang was broken up they’d spent half a million euros using fake credit cards after cloning authentic cards.
Scabies outbreak at La Vila Hospital
A total of twenty-nine people are undergoing treatment, following an outbreak of scabies at the Marina Baixa Hospital in Villajoyosa last week. The Valencian Regional Health Authority, confirmed the outbreak in a statement, in which they also released the numbers infected with the highly contagious skin disease. According to a source at the ministry, speaking to the Spanish press, four patients and twenty-four hospital staff have contracted and are receiving treatment for scabies. They confirmed that the Preventive Medicine service at the hospital is investigating an outbreak of scabies, known as sarna in Spanish, and has put in place the protocols of action and the study of contacts. “The protocol procedures involve, applying the treatment with permethrin to 5% in all cases and their contacts , as well as to the workers of the affected services and their families,” they indicated. “They have been provided
by Alex Trelinski
in writing the correct precautions to be taken at home, both with clothing and other household items,” explained the source. Hospital manager, Rosa Louise Cereceda, who also addressed the press, explained that the first cases appeared in late October and that “since then, all the measures and protocols have been put in place to stop it escalating.” Scabies is not technically classed as an infection, but an infestation, where tiny mites called Sarcoptesscabiei, invade the outer layers of human skin. The skin does not take kindly to the invasion and as the mites burrow and lay eggs inside the skin, the infestation leads to relentless itching and an angry rash. Cereceda also confirmed that the source of this outbreak is a mite that “causes skin lesions sometimes difficult to diagnose”. She insisted that it is “something light and easy to treat and infected staff were sent home with a
series of hygienic measures consisting of a lotion that has to be applied throughout the body for 14 hours and to everyone around them”. The infestation was first diagnosed in a patient who came from a nursing home and was admitted to the area of Traumatology. Although this is the first scabies infestation in the hospital, the manager explained that other hospitals within the Valencia region had reported cases. “We still cannot say that it is eradicated until two weeks have passed without any further cases, but the outbreak is controlled,” she assured. However, president of the Association of Patient Ombudsman, Carmen Flores, criticised the hospital in an open letter to the health minister, in which she requested an official enquiry into the outbreak. Angry that patients who entered the hospital for other treatments became infected, she said, “carelessness or sanitary negligence” occurred in a place where the cleaning “must be exemplary.”

Kidnapped and tortured over debt POLICE believe that a man in Valencia was taken forcibly and tortured with cigarettes over a debt of €25,000 he owed his two business partners. The incident happened earlier this week when a local police patrol went to the aid of a woman w h o h a d
fallen ill. She confessed that her illness was stress related as her son had been kidnapped. Further questioning led them to an address which belonged to one of the partners where they found the woman’s son. The man initially denied he had been harmed but the police could see he was hurt and closer examination showed burn marks and also rope-burns where he had been tied up. While the police were in the property one of the assailants returned and was immediately arrested. The authorities later found a video recording of the victim bound to a chair and being burnt which led to the arrest of a second man. The nature of the business partnership, and whether it is a legitimate business or something shadier, has not publi_SALUS_medios_Alicante_tz.pdf 1 15/10/2018 10:40:24 been revealed at this stage.

Mumps outbreak by Matthew Richards
STUDENTS at the University of Valencia have all been sent warning letters after the viral disease mumps infected several of them. The outbreak has been traced back to a party in September and at least six students who attended have been diagnosed with the infection. All those who contracted the mumps were vaccinated with the triple MMR (mumps, measles, rubella) which usually prevents contagion but is not 100% effective. Health experts have asked all students to ensure their MMR jabs are up to date and to look out for tell-tale symptoms such as fever, headaches and lethargy. The effects of mumps differs widely between people who contract the viral disease. Some sufferers will be unaware they are even infected but in a handful of cases it can be serious, leading to meningitis, permanent hearing loss and infertility among other problems.

THE family of a young Elche woman who was brainwashed and held in a “sex cult sect” in Peru have gathered almost 200,000 signatures for their campaign to tighten up the laws on sects. Patricia Aguilar disappeared from home on her 18th birthday and was eventually traced to the Peruvian jungle. There a man

called Felix Manrique held her and a number of other women where he has been accused of using them as personal sex slaves. Under current Spanish laws, as Patricia and women like her are adults getting their safe return from cults like the one run by Manrique
is difficult. In Patricia’s case, fortunately, her father flew out to Peru and was able to speak to her and persuade her to return home where she has now admitted she had been groomed and brainwashed by her captor. People like Manrique also purposely target countries such as Spain which has soft laws on religious and sexual sects.

Boaring sight Predatory
teacher jailed
The accused during the trial.
WILD BOAR have been photographed walking around the centre of Barcelona, as they search for food. While for some time they have been a familiar sight in the neighbourhoods adjacent to the thickly wooded hills, they have now been spotted in areas closer to the city centre.
by Alex Trelinski
Last week three were seen crossing the street near the Sant Pau hospital, which is close to the Sagrada Família, the city’s top tourist attraction. A day later three more were spotted in the Nou Barris area of the city. The wild boar breeds freely
in the Collserola hills where they have no predators and there are few hunters. In recent years the city authorities have taken measures to control their numbers and claim that this year there have been only 369 reported sightings within the city, compared to 1,187 in 2016.
DESPITE the prosecution asking for a twelve year prison sentence a teacher in Murcia has been sent to jail for three years for having a sexual relationship with an under-age pupil. group he had started for his mathematics pupils. He then started meeting the young teenager after school hours, taking her home to his house while his wife was working. They soon began a sexual relationship and the man would have been well aware of the girl’s age the court
heard. The affair continued for two years until the child decided to tell her family which led to the prosecution. As well as the prison sentence the man has been barred from teaching or any other job involving contact with minors for five years and has been ordered to pay €8,000 compensation to the victim.
Real scare for Halloween THE Guardia Civil’s bomb squad were called out to a property in San Vicente del Raspeig after the householder uncovered a mortar grenade in his garden. The man originally
by Simon Russell
thought it may have been some sort of Halloween prank but soon realised that the 80 cm four kilo bomb was the real thing and
wisely called the authorities. The specialist Benemeriat unit put up a security barrier while moving the device and then took it to a nearby quarry where it was safely detonated.
The grenade was almost certainly a relic from the Spanish Civil War and a Benemeriat spokesman said these are still extremely dangerous even after all this time. There are probably
hundreds of similar devices still lying around; if you do come across something suspect don’t, of course, touch it but immediately call the Guardia on 062.

also more than doubled in the same period. Due to the unusual nature of the crop - it can only be harvested every three years most chufa farmers produce it only as a sideline, but one they admit is very profitable. Sales in Spain remain stable but the European market has increased by around 40% due to it’s high levels of nutrients such as magnesium and potassium. Of course the best known product containing tiger nuts is horchata, a very Valencian drink that is a sort of nutritious milkshake.
ALICANTE’S Avenida Juan Batista Lafora is being completely landscaped with 40,000 plants, mainly roses, being planted along the street. Environment councillor Israel Cortes said that the intention was to visually improve a tired looking part of the city in what is an important area for both locals and visitors. “We are striving to recover Alicante’s quality and give it a friendly and colourful image in keeping with it’s standing as a major tourist attraction” said the councillor. investigation found that a cousin of the girl was also in the hospital, again for sexual abuse. Specialist police officers interviewed both children who said that they had been in a sexual relationship with their grandfather for the last
ten months. This was taking place about twice a week in his car. To keep them quiet he said that if they told anyone he would kill their parents, meaning they would have to go and live in a children’s home. The unnamed suspect has been charged with the sexual abuse of minors and is due to appear in court shortly.

How to protect your health in Spain
In Spanish there is a saying: “your health is the only thing you have”. If we think about it closely, it’s true. Your money can come and go. Your relationships can come and go. Your material belongings can come and go. But once you lose your health…
So, this is not an article about diet, exercising or any other healthy daily practices we all should go through. It’s about one simple action to protect your health in Spain: having a Spanish health card. We see it like having a good insurance: you never think you’ll require it until you need it.
of serious illness or non-life-threatening complaints).
So the question is: would you be covered in Spain in case of emergency? The answer: yes, you would. What about if it were ongoing treatment of a non-life-threatening problem? No, you would not without having the Spanish permanent health card. It’s all connected. Regardless of the
Have you got the paper health card obtained through the European Union Health card and the padron? We’re afraid to confirm that it’s limited and temporary, not useful for ongoing treatments; many people find out literally when they need ongoing treatments.
The good part?Obtaining the Spanish health card is a simple process but let us clarify something; let’s separate “health issues” into two main categories: 1. Emergencies (Unexpected events that in general require fast reaction).
So our recommendation is to take action now. Apply for your Spanish residency card and obtain your health card afterwards, before Brexit. It is not that difficult, they

NO DEAL, NO WORRIES
VALENCIAN President, Ximo Puig, has used a visit to the World Travel Market (WTM) in London to emphasise again that British residents in the region have nothing to worry about after Brexit in regard to health provision and social services, even if there is a “no deal”. Puig stated that “we are not going to leave anybody behind”, though earlier this year, the new PSOE socialist government led by Pedro Sanchez did reintroduce universal healthcare to anybody living in Spain- something that was scrapped by the previous Partido Popular administration in 2012.
Spanish region, to obtain a permanent full coverage Spanish health card you must go through the process:padron, Spanish residency, health centre. Now, all this can change due to Brexit. We recently spoke in a previous article that taking the worse case scenario, the UK could become a complete non-EU country. This would imply having to request a visa, and one of the main requirements would be having to take out private insurance.

Talks Sponsored By The Valencian Tel: 671 935 072 region had its own dedicated stand for the first time at the WTM, with Puig saying that it was important to strengthen the position of the area within the British market, with a third of all foreign visitors to Valencia coming from the UK. “The issue of Brexit has seen tourism from Britain fall a little bit, but are pushing hard with the Spanish government and the European Union to make sure that everything stays as it is for UK visitors”, Puig added. He also claimed that though the number of tourists had gone down, the amount of money spent per head by visitors had actually risen. Puig’s comments on the Brexit effect on British tourist numbers go against the grain of tourist experts who say that falls across the Costa Blanca and Spain during the summer were mainly down to low prices offered by the North African and Turkish markets, in addition to price hikes by some Spanish hotel operators looking to cash in on the recent boom years.

Questions you should ask when taking financial advice
5. Do you have a contingency fund? 6. If anything happens to you, will your family know what to do and will they be able to locate a copy of your Will? You should make a list of key contacts, list of bank accounts, investments, pensions etc. etc. 7. Do you have a current Will? Are the people named as beneficiaries in your Will still the ones you want? 8. If you are under state retirement age, what State Pension will you be entitled to and when? Can you pay extra to top your pension up so you will receive more when you retire and would this be a worthwhile thing to do? 9. If you have children/grandchildren, would you like to be able to help them with university costs or give them money towards a car or a house deposit in the future? If yes, you could consider a savings plan. 10. Will you have, or do you have, enough to retire when you want to and at the standard of living you want? 11. What is your risk tolerance, how much risk are you taking right now? Risk is not necessarily your enemy as it can be beneficial to you, but it needs to be managed as much as possible. 12. What about IHT in the UK and country you are tax resident in; do you know what you or your beneficiaries are liable to pay in each country? 13. If you have investments and or private pensions do you understand them?
In my business, when I think about what’s important for clients, it´s about getting to the heart of the most important issues and understanding the most pressing concerns, be that now or in the future. To do this, it’s important to ask the right questions, both of yourself and your financial adviser. Here’s my list of important questions, there are lots more I am sure, but these are what I believe you should start with:
Questions to ask yourself:
Questions to ask your Financial Adviser:
1. Do you know your income after tax per year and what you spend and save (if anything)? 2. What is your current net worth (liquid and illiquid assets)? 3. If you have debts, what are they, what interest rate are you paying and are there ways you can borrow more efficiently? 4. Is there anything you want to do or accomplish in your life?
1. What is their experience as a financial adviser? 2. How long has the company been operating, what is the size of the company, how many offices do they have and where? 3. How many advisers work for the company in your area? 4. You should clarify their regulation, compliance and professional indemnity insurance

5. What is their financial background and qualifications? 6. Is there a legitimate way to reduce your income tax and/or IHT liabilities? 7. Can you name beneficiaries under your investments; these can be different to the beneficiaries in your Will? Information to give your adviser: 1. Your current asset allocation, with all the things you own. 2. With regard to investments, be that financial or property, you should show your rate of return over the years. This is likely to be easier for financial investments. For a house you will need to factor in all expenses, including improvements, mortgage repayments, insurance payments, taxes etc. and not simply look at the appreciation of the value of a property. Some of these questions, and more importantly their answers, will be tricky, but each is worth considering if you are to get the best from your savings, investments and financial advice. Lastly make sure you enjoy yourself – life is too short, health can be a fragile thing, don’t put off things for the future that you can do now. I am here to help you. The aliens are

Alcatraz in the outback
AFTER a group of scientists at one of the USA’s top universities made the startling claim that an unknown object flying close to the Earth could well be an alien spacecraft, other member’s of the scientific community were quick to put a dampener on their claims. The story started when the 400 metre cigar shaped object was spotted from a telescope in Hawaii in 2017. Researchers at Harvard University have been studying the object and came to the conclusion that they
by Simon Russell
were unable to classify it and “it may be a fully operational probe sent intentionally to Earth’s vicinity by an alien civilisation.” Understandably the world’s news organisations (not to mention X-Files fans) got very excited by this news. However other leading astronomers have been quick to put a dampener on the out of this world claims, generally using the medium of Twitter. “Its characteristics are consistent
with a comet like a body ejected from another star system,” said Dr Alan Fitzsimmons of Belfast’s Queens University. Dr Katie Mack from North Carolina State University pointed out some scientists tend to publish outlandish data, while the truth is almost certainly far more mundane, hinting at publicity seeking by the Harvard researchers. Either way a fairly interesting lump of rock as these things go - but we won’t be visited by ET any time soon. Probably.
PLANS to build a high security jail in the middle of Australia’s most remote desert have been met with a mixed reception. Dubbed the “Australian Alcatraz” after the famously escape proof US island jail, many think it is little more than a gimmick to attract tourists to a little visited part of the country. The proposal is for a high-security jail near Alice Springs, almost a thousand

miles from the nearest cities, Darwin and Adelaide. Supporters point out that even if a prisoner was able to scale the walls they would almost certainly die in the fierce desert heat, quite a strong deterrent against jailbreaks. Aimed at category one convicts such as terrorists, many support the concept.
However other’s point out that the privately backed proposal is being conceived as much to attract “terror tourists” as to actually deal with an issue that is being managed perfectly well within Australia’s existing prison system. If Alcatraz is the inspiration for the new jail the million plus people who go to the infamous “Rock” each year may well have something to do with it.

Three day flight from hell PASSENGERS on a British Airways flight from Florida that was supposed to take 8 hours finally staggered into Gatwick airport after a whopping 70-hour delay. It seemed everything that could go wrong did and the travellers were also less than impressed with BA’s response. Many families had been enjoying half term at Florida’s Disneyland and their flight, BA2036, was due to take off from Orlando at 19.25 ET on Thursday. After waiting four hours at the airport they were told that a technical fault could not be fixed in time. All 200 people were then put up in the same hotel, something described by one as “complete chaos”. There were various delays the next day although eventually, 2036 departed, about 24 hours late. Just 40 minutes after take off the

captain announced that due to another fault, or more likely the same one not fixed properly, they would have to divert to New York’s JFK airport. The flight itself was described as “the roughest I have ever been on” by one passenger. On arrival at JFK, it seemed nothing had been done for the passengers who then had to sleep on the airport floor, including a 7-year-old cancer survivor. During all this, the constant thread was that there was little or no communication from what few BA staff there were around. BA has apologised although many people - some of who spent upwards of ₤11,000 on their trip - are looking for something a bit more concrete in the way of compensation.
THE discovery of human remains in a Vatican building may go some way to solving the disappearance of a child in 1983 that has become one of the biggest such cases to emerge from Italy. 15-year-old Emanuela Orlandi, the daughter of a Vatican employee, went to a flute lesson on 22 June and never returned, sparking a mystery heavily involving the church. There had been unconfirmed sightings of Emanuela but the case really caught the public interest when someone called the girl’s family saying they had kidnapped her. In return for her return, they demanded the release from prison of Mehmet Ali Agca who had shot and wounded Pope John Paul II in 1981. The caller gave some limited evidence that he was holding Emanuela, but the communications stopped in 1983 and he has not been heard from since. Other theories range from a kidnapping by a satanic sex cult linked to the Vatican to the church arranging her kidnapping as her

father had damaging information on the Pope, who he worked closely with. One theory that gained traction was that she was taken by gangsters and 10 years ago the former mistress of a well known Mafia member said that he had taken the girl. Apparently, this was at the request of a high ranking archbishop and was intended to keep her father quiet to avoid his other children suffering the same fate. Somewhat like the Madeleine McCann case in the UK, there has been a huge amount of speculation with very little in the way of concrete evidence. Although the case remains officially open the Italian authorities believe that the most likely scenario is that the teenager was lured away for sexual motives and murdered. However, ghoulish though it is, a case that involves sex, death, religion and the Mafia has been fascinating Italians for three and a half decades - and may soon be resolved.

Benidorm gets ready to party! The event that originally began in a low key fashion, as a way of keeping British tourists and ex-pat residents entertained on the day after the official end of the annual November fiestas, has since grown into one of Europe’s biggest and well organised parties. Started over 20 years ago, by Manolo from Sinatras Bar, who offered a free drink to anyone dressed up in costume, the annual ‘Dress Up Day’, was an instant hit, bringing party-goers back to Rincon de Loix area of the resort on the ‘Thursday at the end of fiestas’ year after year. And the rest is history, with an estimated 30,000 revellers in attendance last year, the bars and clubs of the ‘strip’ will be packed out from late morning, right through until the early hours of Friday.
by Andy Mansell
Never ones to miss out on a party, an increasing number of Spanish residents book the day off work, so that they too can join in the revelry. The main event is a parade of floats, which sets off from Avenida de Europa at around 15.00h, before snaking its way along the packed streets around the ‘English Square’. Hotel groups, Servigroup, Medplaya and La Marina are joined by many of the larger businesses from the town, such as Beachcomber, Tiki Group, Rockerfellasand Talk of the Coast, all competing for the most flamboyantly themed float. The ‘After Party’ continues throughout the day, with outdoor live music performances, giant paellas, barbecues and pop up bars, all helping to provide an
unmissable atmosphere of pure fun and laughter. Because so many holidaymakers book their stay in the resort specifically to coincide with the biggest party of the year, a number of the businesses have pooled together to provide the giant paellas, barbecues and live entertainment daily throughout the week. So, at lunchtime and early evening every day from Tuesday November 13th, through to Friday 15th (should that day now be called the ‘After Party’ afterparty!), just follow your nose to find the venue hosting the grub that day. To join in the fun, get yourselves down to the area known as the ‘English Square’ early, wear your finest costumes and soak up the unique atmosphere of Benidorm letting its hair down.

Cemetery road set for
improvement
ALVARO de Luna was born in Madrid but the well known actor from both stage and screen chose to spend almost of his life in Denia where he died this week. Appearing in both Spanish and English language films such as “The Mercenary” (1968) and “Teo el Pelirrojo” (1985) he was probably best known for his longrunning role in “El Algarrobo” a much loved Spanish TV series. He could also be seen in Hollywood blockbusters such as “The Son of Captain Blood” and “El Capitan Jones” which were both filmed in Denia. Alvaro de Luna was born in Madrid on 10 April 1935 and died in Denia on 2 November 2018 after a battle with liver cancer.

ONE of Javea’s worst stretches of road, the CV-734 Gata road by the municipal cemetery intersection, has been earmarked for improvement works starting next year. A million euros has been set aside from the Generalitat budget for the project, half to be spent in 2019 and the rest in 2020. Mayor Jose Chulvi said that the project when completed, will be much welcomed by all regular users and improve the safety and traffic flow in the area.
Jalon valley help challenge revealed The latest challenge faced by Jalon Valley Help was discussed by JVH President Elaine Horton when she addressed thirty current and new members at a meeting held at restaurant Cappuccino in Orba. All the attendees have volunteered to staff the new JVH Charity shop currently
under construction in the village. Elaine gave a brief talk to the new members to give them an understanding of “Who We Are and What We Do”. Following this introduction Vernon Pearce from Valley FM radio presented Elaine with a substantial contribution
towards JVH funds. Following a cream tea, the group were taken to the site of the new shop which is in fact a former handbag factory which has lain unused and abandoned for several years. The unlocking of the large steel factory type door by Elaine revealed the scale of the challenge, which is to convert what is in fact a very large, and currently uninhabitable, building, in great need of a large dose of tender loving care, into a modern shop within a relatively short period of time. There were several large intakes of breath, but the overwhelming reaction from the volunteers was “We can do this” Although a great deal of the initial clearance work, including moving several hundred kilos of rolls of

various bag making materials and other miscellaneous “stuff” from the back of the premises, in preparation for loading into skips, has already been completed by JVH volunteers, much remains to be done This work includes the demolition of the existing ceiling, which is a major undertaking, the installation of a completely new suspended ceiling, a new shop front, replacement of existing windows, constructing changing rooms, complete refurbishment of the existing toilet, and the installation of shelving, to name just some of it. By any measure this project is a major undertaking. Being a charity, it is important to JVH that project costs are minimised. To meet this requirement, much of the work, with the exception of the highly specialised activities such as
the installation of the false ceiling, and new shop front to give but two examples, will be undertaken by JVH volunteers. Much needed, and very welcome assistance in the form of paint and building materials is being provided by local enterprises. Elaine Horton, in commenting about this new venture said “Our volunteers and local businesses are simply amazing, whatever the task or situation they willingly step up to the mark we are so very fortunate to have their support. When all this is finished we´re going to have one hell of a party !“ Jalon Valley Help continue to look for volunteers to assist the charity in all activities related to providing assistance to those in need in the Jalon Valley and surrounding area.

A guide to making your feline look more-than-fine
Regardless of what all those dog fanatics believe, it seems pretty obvious from our perspective that the best domestic pet is a cat. And that’s not just because of their adorable little faces. Cats rule, then, and for several reasons. Watching one hunt is like getting a life lesson in how Mother Nature works, while their personalities alone are big enough to dominate most homes. That’s true whether they adopt the aloof attitude towards anything other than Scottish smoked salmon, or have a penchant for playtime with their owners. Felines have typically been more popular with time-starved animal lovers, because the perceived truth is that they need much less attention and effort from their owners. This is accurate to some extent: there are no walkies, and some cats can happily go for days without having much human contact. However, it’s wise to make note of the fact that everything from British blues to Siamese will respond to interaction, and that emotional neglect can have a detrimental effect on your relationship with the furry friend, and even on their health.

Brushing your cat’s entire body is a necessity, and although this is more difficult with some characters than others, and certain parts of the animal are less easy to reach, there are a few tactics that can be employed in order to make sure this process is as easy as he or she will allow. Start by getting them early - ideally at the kitten stage - therefore making sure they are used to being groomed.
It’s also vital to brush in the correct way so as not to make the little beast uncomfortable. In a similar way to shaving a man’s face, your hand should move with the direction of its coat, rather than against it. Softer brushes, although less effective, can also be a good introduction to grooming for your cat, and if that’s not enough to convince them, you can start out by trying to groom with a specially designed mitt, while a toothbrush can make seemingly inaccessible areas such as around the ears much easier to work. A key obstacle to successful cat grooming is the fact that your grooming tool is often seen as a threat. Cats are notoriously wary of any object, and as such it’s essential you break down their distrust of whatever is in your hand. A good way to do this is to mix up strokes with the bristles and strokes using the smoother side of the tool, which should reinforce the cat’s understanding that it is not in any direct danger. All relatively simple concepts; nevertheless by following them you should find the process begins to become far simpler and much more effective.

Health & Beauty - Local How’s your Homocysteine?
My what, you may ask. Everybody knows about cholesterol, smoking and being overweight to be risk factors for cardiovascular diseases, but did you ever hear about homocysteine? Fairly unknown, but quite notorious. Homocysteine, an amino acid, is made in the body from another amino acid, methionine. As meat, cheese and some other proteins are especially rich in methionine, we tend to eat this amino acid every day.
What’s the cause of high homocysteine?
A high level of homocysteine can be caused by: • Genetic diseases • A shortage of folic acid and/or vitamin B6 and B12 • The aging process - every 10 years homocysteine level rises • 5 – 10% • Certain medications • Smoking • Excess intake of coffee or alcohol • Low intake of Vitamin B rich food
Why is it so bad for us?
High blood levels of homocysteine can damage cholesterol that is found in your blood, which can lead to direct damage of the walls of your arteries. This can lead to a series of reactions
that result in thickening of the walls of your arteries, leaving less room for proper circulation. This whole process is commonly referred to as atherosclerosis. High homocysteine can also cause your blood to have a higher than normal tendency to clot, which increases your risk of developing a dangerous clot that could lead to a stroke. In addition, high homocysteine is known to significantly lower nitric oxide in your blood. Nitric oxide is a gas
that is critical to maintaining healthy and flexible arterial walls. Studies have proved beyond a doubt that people with elevated homocysteine levels are more likely to have: • Heart disease • Strokes • Alzheimer’s disease and dementia • Kidney disease • Diseases of the eye • Erectile dysfunction It also speeds up the aging process, weakens you immune system and increases pain and inflammation
So, high homocysteine spells trouble!
The good news is that a raised homocysteine level can be easily diagnosed by a single blood test. Should the result be high, with simple medication and lifestyle changes, homocystein levels can be brought down to an acceptable level, thus reducing the above risks.
A simple blood test could significantly change your life expectancy.

How diabetes effects the eyes Top
skin care tips 1. Wear sun Screen 3. Moisturise after Sunscreen isn´t just for cleansing
To mark World Diabetes Day on the 14th of November, Specsavers Opticas are offering free eye tests in their stores and providing advice and information on how diabetes sufferers can protect their eyesight. “Over 425 million people are currently living with diabetes, thankfully most is well controlled, so the condition doesn’t affect the eyes, but
each store will usually see two to three diabetes suffers with diabetic retinopathy each year who do require medical intervention. We expect that to increase as the numbers of diabetes sufferers are on the rise”, commented Mike Stone from Specsavers Opticasin Javea and Calpe. “The good news is that early diagnosis, a healthy lifestyle and the right treatment can stop
blindness through diabetes. Knowledge is power with this kind of condition, so we’ve put together some useful information on diabetes and the eye and are offering free eye tests and information in store on the 14th of November.”
What is Diabetic Retinopathy?
Diabetic retinopathy, a condition which affects vision, occurs when the blood vessels in the retina are damaged by the changes in blood sugar levels. This leads to blurry vision which can often come and go throughout the day. If untreated, the condition can become more serious, resulting in the network of blood vessels which supply the retina suffering permanent damage. This can result in irreversible vision loss. To avoid sight loss and other common side effects of diabetes, such as heart disease, stroke and kidney failure, it is important that blood sugar level, blood pressure and cholesterol levels are controlled. In many cases this can be achieved through good nutrition and healthy eating rather than medication, so with the right information you can take back control of diabetes and lead a full life. Not all diabetes causes sight loss, but it is important to have regular screenings and eye tests so that any problems
or changes can be monitored. Most complications can be treated; however it is vital that they are detected early. Once vision is lost, it cannot be restored. There are five Specsavers Opticason the Costa Blanca and all offer advanced eye tests using a digital retinal camera, allowing the optician to take a detailed picture of the back of the eye. These comprehensive eye tests are able to detect the signs of Diabetic retinopathy. If these signs are identified during an eye test, patients are referred to a doctor for further tests and treatment. To book your eye test and find your nearest store visit www.specsavers.es
trips to the beach. Harmful UV rays damage your skin even during not so sunny days. A broad spectrum sunscreen should be applied every day as part of your skin care routine.
2. Double cleanse
A double cleanse is the best way to clean your face and cleanse your skin, especially when you sweat a lot. Start by cleaning your face with a gentle cleanser to remove most of the makeup and impurities and finish with a soothing cleanser which should finish the job of cleaning your skin whilst also hydrating and restoring your skins natural protective barrier.
Without moisturising after cleansing you are missing a trick. Cleanse and moisturise to lock in that moisture and promote all day hydration.
4. Massage your face
Instead of rushing the cleansing, taking time to massage the products into your skin will boost circulation and create a better complexion.
5. Apply in order
Always apply products in the right order, from the lightest to the heaviest. So a thin moisturiser followed by the broad spectrum sunscreen.

BIG MORTGAGE BLOW
Spain’s Supreme Court ruled on Tuesday that customers and not banks will have to pay for stamp duty on mortgages from now on, reversing a ruling from mid-October and sparing banks from billions of euros in potential costs. The unexpected ruling adheres to an even earlier ruling from February, and the back-and-forth over the decision had prompted Spanish lenders to demand more predictable rules. Analysts and rating agencies

by Alex Trelinski
initially said the October ruling could have cost billions of euros in compensation costs for banks, ranging from 0.6 billion euros to more than 15 billion euros in the worst-case scenario. Spanish bank shares had fallen sharply after the court’s October decision. Consumer association Adicae said that up to eight million clients could be affected by the court ruling.
Historic house on the market ONE of Spain’s most desirable properties has come onto the market in Mallorca, yours for a cool 16 million euros. More of an estate than a property, the original owner was Archduke Louis Salvador who had the property built back in 1867 after falling in love with the then unspoilt island. The house itself is 1,180 m2 and sits in a plot that is 23,000 m2 close to Deia and Valldemossa.

Close neighbours to the inland retreat if you decide to settle there will be actor Michael Douglas and the Spanish royal family. As you would imagine the place has been modernised a bit since 1867 but still retains its original grandeur, not to mention a floodlit tennis court, pools and a guest “cottage” which is probably larger than most people’s homes.
SPANISH pensioners are selling their properties at knock down prices in increasing numbers with one major proviso - they have to be allowed to live there until they die. This private equity release scheme is appealing to those who have all their money in their twilight years tied up in their property, allowing them to have some cash for their golden years. Many will have spent all their life in the house and are reluctant to move away from both the house and the local barrio. In a lot of instances, the money will help pay for a live-in carer to allow them to stay at home.
by Simon Russell
The concept is particularly popular in places like Madrid and Barcelona where the cost of living is expensive and the Spanish pension doesn’t stretch too far. The plus for property investors is they acquire a cheap property, the negative is it could be several years before they can cash in their investment. However, for investors looking to the long-term, the schemes have great appeal. Both sides are obviously advised to hire a good lawyer before entering into such an agreement.

Where the germs are hiding in your kitchen.
Your kitchen may look clean, but here’s the dirt on what’s really happening. Although a quick daily clean might keep some of the bacteria at bay, it’s important to remember that germs are lurking in the dark corners often overlooked! Since the kitchen tends to be where family and friends congregate, not only is it alarming to discover that things may not be as clean as you thought they were, bacteria can come in contact with the food you eat. That raises your risk of getting sick. These are three places in the kitchen where germs like to hide, along with things you can do to clean up your act.
1. Your refrigerator It’s true, germs can and do hang out inside your refrigerator, especially in the meat and vegetable compartments. In the NSF study, these tested positive for E.coli, salmonella or listeria 36 percent of the time. To keep food safe, discard food that’s past its prime, and maintain a consistent temperature level in the fridge, ideally between 40 and 32 degrees Fahrenheit, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. You should also get in the habit of regularly cleaning refrigerator door handles and meat and vegetable drawers! When it’s time to replace your fridge, consider the LG InstaView Door-in-Door Refrigerator with ColdSaver(TM) panel, which acts like a barrier keeping cold air in where it matters the most - inside the refrigerator, extending the life cycle of your food. The InstaView model also lets you see what’s inside before you open the door. Just knock twice on the tinted glass
panel to illuminate, and you can find what you need without letting all the cold air escape. Both of these features will keep food surrounded with fresh, cool air, so everything stays fresher, longer.
2. Your dishwashing station Be honest. How long has that kitchen towel been hanging on that loop by the kitchen sink? A week? A month? Can’t remember? If you’re not careful about how often you wash your towels, your kitchen rags could become a breeding ground for dangerous, stomachsickening germs. According to researchers from the University of Mauritius, towels can develop some nasty bacteria - the kind that causes foodborne illnesses - when they’re used for a full month. Yuck! And don’t forget the kitchen sink sponge. Other research suggests this so-called cleaning tool harbors some of the nastiest germs, with three-quarters of them contaminated with coliform bacteria, according to a study completed by NSF International. To keep things cleaner, get into the habit of grabbing a clean towel every few days. Sponges should not be used for longer than two weeks. b o a r d s . The NSF study discovered that fecal coliform has a presence on these 3. Your food prep surfaces surfaces - 45 percent of kitchen sinks, 32 percent of countertops and 18 percent of Whether you’re making your lunchtime cutting boards. Even if these are wiped or sandwich or chopping veggies for dinner, rinsed daily, it’s important to take the extra don’t be deceived by the spotless appearance step to keep bacteria from lingering on these of your countertops, sinks and cutting surfaces where they can contaminate your
food. Before you gather your ingredients, wash all meal prep areas with hot, soapy water. Now that you know what to do to combat hidden bacteria lurking in your kitchen, you can prepare meals and feed your family with much greater peace of mind.

RISING BRITS
LATEST FIGURES show that British buyers are driving this year’s increases in foreign purchases of Spanish properties. The latest report from the Association of Spanish Land Registrars, shows that foreign buyers increased by 11 per cent to 17,338 sales in the second quarter of 2018, compared to the same period last year. And despite the uncertainty surrounding the final Brexit deal,
the British were still the biggest group of foreign buyers, accounting for 15 per cent of the overseas property purchasing market. British buyers, according to the Registrars are nearly twice as much as the next biggest group, which is the French. UK property seekers are also growing faster than the next two biggest markets, with the French demand taking an eight per fall.
Floor clause chaos
SPAIN’S judicial system is failing to cope with the hundreds of thousands of ‘floor clause’ cases being brought before the courts. Floor clauses, which were often secretly written in, imposed a minimum interest rate on floatingrate mortgages by setting a limit on how far they could fall in tandem with the benchmark rate. In practice, this meant that Spanish mortgage buyers did not profit fully
from record-low interest rates which Spain enjoyed for several years. The clauses were ruled illegal by the Spanish high court in 2013, and despite 54 specialised courts being set up across Spain, the sheer onslaught of cases is proving too overwhelming. Some 260,000 cases have been filed so far but only just under 52,000 have been concluded. Lenders are creating a second bottleneck of appeal cases which is
‘unjustifiably hobbling’ the system with an ‘artificial litigiousness that could easily be avoided, and which is consuming
huge amounts of public resources,’ according to the head of Murcia’s High Court, Miguel Pasqual de Riquelme.

Darcie stands firm
A 13-year-old Welsh girl who dreams of playing football professionally says she has been criticised and called a lesbian for playing a “boy’s sport”. Darcie, 13, from Cwmbran in Torfaen has played football for local teams since she was eight. But she has been told by PE teachers that she cannot play it as a recommended sport at school - instead hockey and netball are for girls.
The Children’s Commissioner for Wales said gender stereotyping was “depressing”. Darcie has rightly said that bullies won’t stop her playing football, and good for her. British schools have a big role to play in 2018 by running sport somewhat differently compared to the way it was done half a century ago. Haven’t they noticed the popularity of women’s sport like football, rugby, and cricket?

Benidorm star in bag snatch warning
by Andy Mansell
One of Benidorm’s top entertainers took to social media last week to warn his followers about a gang of well-dressed thieves operating in the area. Mark Harty, a member of popular local vocal groups, One Vision, Stand & Deliver and Smart Move, was left angered and saddened after heartless thieves robbed the handbag of his friend, whilst they were having a meal together at one of his favourite restaurants. The devastated singer, wrote a status update on his facebook page with an account of the incident, which happened at a famous restaurant in Altea, to warn his 3500 followers to be extra
vigilant, as the theft could happen to anyone at any time. H e explained that the group had chosen the venue as they knew the food would be good and as his friends had not been too well since their arrival, it would be a perfect spot for a meal before they left Benidorm the following day. “My friend went to pick up her hand bag half way through the meal only to find it had gone”, said Mark. “After reporting it to the restaurant manager, who checked out their CCTV camera footage, we were able to see three well-dressed people, one man and two women, who must have been about 60, come into the restaurant.”
Describing how quickly the theft occurred, he continued, “one of the women was standing at the door, while the other two pretended to take the table next to us.” “The man then the man slid my friend’s handbag from our table near her feet and stuffed it under his coat, then they left.” Unfortunately, the handbag contained a significant amount of cash in euros and pounds sterling, plus a mobile phone and irreplaceable photos of the friend’s family, which she had no copies of. However, not satisfied with the cash and phone, by the time the party visited the Altea police station to report the incident, a further 3000€ had been spent on the victim’s credit card. “I don’t think I’ll relax in another restaurant ever
again,as you never know who is around you”, said the vocalist. “Three well dressed, respectable looking people in their 60s, but obviously professional thieves”. The post provoked a huge response from Mark’s followers, sympathising with his friend’s plight, with a number asking him to name and shame the restaurant. But the singer was reluctant to disclose any further information, “I don’t know if I should as it’s a great place with great food and service and it could happen anywhere, plus the manager studied the CCTV for us and was very helpful with the police”. His main aim was to draw everyone’s attention to the incident and warn them to be extra aware at all times, when away from home.

NEW Citroen C5 Aircross The C5 Aircross is based on the same platform as the Peugeot 3008 and 5008, the Vauxhall Grandland X and the new DS7 Crossback. It’s one of the most unique Citroens for some time in terms of the design language which is brought across from the C3 Aircross which has sold over 80,000 units since its launch late last year. The exterior styling of the C5 Aircross certainly stands out from the SUV crowd. A total of 20 driver assist systems are included in this new model. It is also Citroën’s second model to include the new Progressive Hydraulic Cushion suspension system, following the C4 Cactus, which aims to deliver “peerless comfort” while retaining the relaxed characteristics of the company’s long-standing hydropneumatic system. The system has two hydraulic stops on either side, with one for compression and the other for rebound. This results in “a magic carpet ride” even when driving over uneven ground. For major impacts, the hydraulic stops work with the spring and
shock absorber to avoid jerky movement and unwanted bouncing. The cabin is spacious, rear passengers have plenty of headroom. Legroom, however, could be better with the front seats set back. Unlike in the C3 Aircross, the rear seats neither slide nor recline. There is an easy release mechanism for folding them down, and the boot floor can be raised to offer a flat floor. The boot itself is a sturdy and a capacious 516 litres. The SUV features advanced soundproofing with reduced road and wind noise thanks to double laminated front windows with an insulating layer, bringing passengers exceptional, cocoon-like comfort. Particular attention was paid to the soundproofing in the engine compartment too. Powered by efficient and high-performance petrol and diesel engines ranging from 130hp to 180hp and the Citroën brand’s new EAT8 automatic gearbox, New C5

other manufacturers, Citroen has chosen to focus on comfort. Following on from the revised C4 Cactus last year, the C5 Aircross
should establish Citroen very well in this niche. Whilst the hydraulic cushion suspension system is currently only found in these two vehicles, it was developed to work across the whole range, so expect to see more models featuring the
system. The C5 Aircross provides a visually appealing package, along with a comprehensive and generous equipment list. It’s comfortable although some might argue that there are rivals which are better to drive.
Luxury brand of the year
Aston Martin has been named ‘Luxury Brand of the Year’ at the Luxury Briefing Awards. Heralded as the ‘Oscars of the Luxury Industry’, the aim of the annual event is to reward and celebrate excellence and innovation. Presenting the award, Sir Eric Peacock described Aston Martin as a “powerful, hugely aspirational brand that is the epitome of luxury” and defied anyone in the room not to covet it. He went on to say the last 12 months have been an “Annus Magnificus” for the brand as it “soared into profit, increasing sales by an astonishing 8% in the first half of the year alone…it has been one of the fastest turnarounds and renaissances the luxury industry has ever seen”. Aston Martin Lagonda Vice-President and Chief Marketing Officer, Simon Sproule, said: “It’s a great honour
to be named Luxury Brand of the Year. At Aston Martin Lagonda we have a fantastic team that lives and breathes this beautiful brand, working to grow and develop our presence across the world. With each car launch, each new brand partnership or lifestyle event, we get closer to our current and future customers. At a time when the automotive industry is facing incredible challenges we are pushing constantly to make sure the Aston Martin brand, and soon the Lagonda brand, not only stands the test of time but flourishes during this period of change.” Aston Martin are also delighted that the award for ‘Outstanding Contribution to Charity’ was made to Aston Martin Cambridge, for the special edition Vanquish S. The raffle for ‘Red 10’, the 10th car from a limited edition run of the ‘Aston Martin Vanquish S Red Arrows edition’ raised an astonishing £1.5 million for the RAF Benevolent Fund, which works to support the men and women of the RAF and t h e i r families.
Be prepared this winter
ROAD SAFETY organisation GEM Motoring Assist is offering basic tips for drivers to ensure troublefree journeys this winter. Giving some attention now to batteries, tyres, antifreeze, wipers, lights and other vehicle essentials is the best way of ensuring reliability in the months to come, says GEM. Here are GEM’s five simple steps for reducing the chance of a breakdown or malfunction this winter: 1 Get the battery and charging system checked to ensure best performance. A number of winter calls to GEM’s breakdown control centre relate to flat batteries. Cold weather puts a lot of strain on tired batteries, so consider changing it now to
avoid the inconvenience of a breakdown. If your battery seems to be turning over more slowly than usual, get it checked straight away. Similarly, if the red battery warning symbol illuminates on the dashboard, do get the battery checked. 2 Ensure your car’s cooling system has the correct levels of anti-freeze, which is vital to prevent the water in your engine’s cooling system from freezing. GEM recommends you consult your local dealer or a qualified mechanic to ensure this is done correctly. 3 Make sure all the lights on your car, inside and out, are working properly. Clean them regularly to ensure they are free of dirt, so that you
can see, and others can see you. 4 Check tyres for tread depth and pressure weekly through the winter. Good tyres will ensure the safety systems on your car are as effective as possible. GEM recommends a minimum tread depth of 3mm (the legal minimum is 1.6mm), as this will disperse much more water from the road and will minimise your risk of skidding and losing control. 5 Check your windscreen wipers, front and rear. Make sure they are working properly, and top up your screenwash regularly using cold weather washer fluid. Do not use the windscreen wipers to clear ice, as this will very quickly lead to damage.

More X Factor chaos but Danny goes through Halloween week on X Factor proved to be a complete nightmare for producers, with more embarrassing technical issues and sound problems hounding the hapless contestants. Poor Danny Tetley must be wishing he could perform in his home venues back in Benidorm every week, where the sound technicians appear to be a damn sight better at their jobs than the ones he has to put up with on the show. Firstly, a show that prides itself on being recorded live had to be pre-recorded earlier in the day last Saturday, to accommodate pre-arranged engagements for judge Robbie Williams. The Angels singer will be performing in South America for the next two weekends,
and flew out to Chile on Saturday night, but show bosses rearranged the show so he could support his acts before jetting away. “Everyone is frantic behind the scenes… it means the dress rehearsals will kick off at midday – several hours earlier.” “The show itself will be filmed as live at 4.30pm, so it’s stressful to say the least but everyone is rallying around to make it a success,” an inside source told the Daily Mirror. Well, they didn’t rally around hard enough, because as Ayda Field introduced Danny, a robotic, crackling sound took over the show. Some viewers assumed it was part of the Halloween-style show, but others were left confused as the sound issues carried over to
Danny’s performance of Queen’s ‘Who Wants To Live Forever’. “Are they meant to sound like robots? #XFactor,”, was one Twitter comment, “Okay I believe there is someone at ITV that doesn’t like @ danny_tetley”and“That guy has been done over once again. #XFactor”, were two of the other complaints, as a message from X Factor bosses suddenly popped up on screen, saying, ‘We are sorry for the temporary interference in sound.’
They needn’t have worried, because for now nothing is going to stop our ‘Teflon Tetley’, who sailed through to sing again next week ……. Technical issues allowing!
Zayn refrains from speaking They may have garnered a trophy cabinet full of awards in their seven-year stint at the top of the charts, but it seems the boys of One Direction were never that close. A revealing interview with Zayn Malik in December’s issue of Vogue, claims the singer, who was the first to leave the band in 2015, felt he did not have a single friend during his time with 1D. Widely credited with breaking the band up, as fellow members Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson and Liam Payne, only continued as a foursome for one more album, Malik admits the gruelling schedule took a toll on his mental health, and it affected his relationships with his bandmates. “We went from theatres to arenas to stadiums, there was never any sort of bridge between. Just boom, boom, boom. “I guess that kind of progression affects you a little bit. People take it different ways, especially when there are five personalities.” In the honest interview he also reveals, he, “never really spoke to Harry even when I was in the band, so I didn’t really expect
that much of a relationship with him after.” However, he also told the magazine “I ain’t spoke to any of them for a long time. “There are things that happen and things that were said after I left – snide things, small things that I would never have expected. The relationships had broken apart.” Zayn added: “That’s just the way it is. People move on, people grow apart, people grow up.” Stinging words Zayn …… So I guess a One Direction reunion isn’t on the cards in the near future then?

4 e m o c e b 5 n Whe p i h s d n e i r F . . . ! s d n e r e v e n Move aside Little Mix …… make way Dua ……sashay away Ariane …… because the original Wannabee’s are back on the block and ready to regain their crown. Yes, I can hardly contain my excitement at this week’s news that The Spice Girls are embarking on a huge (six date!) UK reunion tour in 2019. And even better news for music fans …… Posh Spice is staying at home to concentrate on her fashion career.
The group announced the news with a news report-style video, which was posted on their Twitter page, but Victoria Beckham was notable by her absence. The iconic pop group will perform a series of stadium shows next year, marking their first headline dates since 2008. However, the last time the Spice Girls performed together was way back in 2012, at the closing ceremony of the London Olympics, when they were
roundly mocked for miming throughout their act. “We are beyond excited to be reuniting next year for a stadium tour,” the group said in a statement. “Bringing girl power and our message of friendship and love back to the stage feels more relevant than ever. We hope everyone can join us for one big Spice Girls party.”
Mel B spoke about Beckham’s absence on the tour on Loose Women, saying: “It’s just the four of us, but she might join us at some point. I hope so. I think it would be a shame if she didn’t.” Well you may think that Mel, but she hardly had the voice of an angel and tellingly, was the only one to not have a solo number 1 UK after the band split, so I doubt her vocal abilities will be sorely
missed. No matter, they’re one of the most successful UK groups of all time, having sold 85 million records around the world and they will have a proper singer on the stadium tour, which takes in Manchester, Coventry, Sunderland, Edinburgh, Bristol and Wembley …….. Jess Glynne is the support act.
Jenny from the block fabulous Is that really Life, at 49 Esther? Photos from a recent shoot featuring ‘Luscious Latina’, Jennifer Lopez, prove that curvaceous women can look sexy, sassy and sizzling even when they’re approaching the half century mark. A long time before Kim Kardashian and Nikki Minaj made big bums the most coveted feature in showbiz-land, there wasJLo, whose booty inspired a generation of women to embrace their curves. Fast approaching the big Five-oh! landmark birthday, Ms Lopez spoke to InStyle Magazine, whose cover she will grace for their December issue. “I was just being myself,” the Love Don’t Cost A Thing singer told the magazine,“In my family, curves were glorified and part of the culture, it was just like, Jennifer has a big butt, and it’s good,” Those ‘glorified curves’ take centre stage in Jennifer’s shoot for the fashion mag, with the mum-of-two rocking a sequinned, haute couture, emerald green, Valentino cape as a dress, showing off her nude side profile, while wearing sky-high gold stilettos. Definitely in the ‘If you’ve got it flaunt it’ tradition, JLo proves that any forty nine year old can wear clothes to show off their curves at anytime …… but not while you’re doing the weekly shop in Mercadona, por favour!

Drop Quotes
Drop Quotes are similar to cryptograms, in that the goal is for the solver to uncover a hidden quote. A black-and-white crossword-style grid is set up for each quote, with a number of letters “hovering” above each column. Your task is to “drop” each of those letters into the appropriate square in each column, until the entire quote is revealed. All punctuation (commas, periods, dashes, etc.) has been removed. Good luck!

Teulada U3a
The Moraira/Teulada U3A was formed in 2008 and, shortly after its inauguration, various groups were organised including the Creative Writing Group. At the start of 2018, the 10th Anniversary Year of the Moraira-Teulada U3A,, the current members of the Writing Group felt that they wanted to celebrate all the stories that had been written during that time - over 2,000 of them. They decided to do this by creating a small memento that, hopefully, would be enjoyed by many and also raise some much-needed funds for the U3A’s chosen local charity. They thought it important to have a common theme running through the book that would hold the attention of readers and also show the eclectic mix of work from the current members in the Group. After a lot of discussion, they came up with the title “Lucky Escapes”. Now, after months of writing, revising, planning, proof reading and
designing, under the guidance of the Group Leader Dot Garrett, the book has been published, much to the enormous delight of everyone involved. It is available via ‘Amazon’ as a spectacular paper-back or on Kindle, and all profits will go to the “Raise a Smile” charity which is the Moraira-Teulada U3A charity for 2018. The official launch of “Lucky Escapes” will take place at “LettersR-Us”, in Moraira, on Monday, 19th November from 10.30 a.m. and the authors look forward to welcoming as many people as possible to enjoy complimentary cava and cakes with them and, hopefully, buy a
copy of their book.

Visitors go home with 9 points at El Cid
Pego Golf Society
We had 48 players today including 3 guests, Dennis Pike, George Smith, John Ross and Ben Wilcock. We played a Texas Scramble in very cold conditions and strong winds.I shared a buggy with Donna Green who at one stage was so cold that she fell out of the buggy (and she was driving!). We teed off at 9.20am and didn’t see the sun until 12.30. The results were as follows: Ist place the team of Shaun O’Gorman, Bob Jenkins , Adrian Marsh and John Ross with a great score of 59.5 net. 2nd place the team of Peter Rapley, Paul Sankey and Tricia Chapman with a score 65.3 net 3rd place the team of Ken Millar, Simon Fox, Celia Cronin and Fiona (on the podium yet again) Sankey with a score of 66.1 net
Despite a lot of heavy overnight rain the El Cid Green held up and was very playable as El Cid welcomed Javea Green in the Winter League. It was the away team that got off to a good start and after 6 ends Javea were ahead on all rinks. However El Cid fought back and despite the points going 9-3 in Javea favour there were 3 very close games. What to say about Rink 2 is best left on the Green! Rink 3 saw Pat Metcalfe and her ladies fight a tight game against Jack Wardrop but a 3 shots on the last end was not enough and lost 12-13.
Rink 4 had Yvonne Bridens strong all ladies team take the lead after 6 ends and kept it to finish winners by 18-11 against Alan Philips team (you had to feel for Alan as the only man on that rink) Rink 5 kept everyone on edge being the last rink to finish. Paul Leeders team leading by 1 shot after 17 ends and holding shot which Brian Manser moved to leave Javea with 1 shot. Paul was having none of this and with his last bowl returned the favour drawing shot inside Brian’s. As we held our breath Brian sent a great bowl to edge out Paul and take the end to square the
game at 13 – 13 Rink 6 saw El Cid struggling 18-7 down after 13 ends but a 12 shots fightback over the last 5 ends was not enough for Clive Scotts team who lost 22-19. The Berleen team skipped by John Olliffe won 8 ends to gain 15 shots but lost out to David Ings team who had a good middle section scoring 11 shots over 5 ends to take a 22- 15 win. Winter League Captain Derek Randall took some comfort from the close games against a very experienced and strong Javea Team. El Cid now sit in 6th place and are home to Emerald Isle next week.
Nearest the Pin on hole 3 was Shaun again with 8.1m and on hole 16 Alan Barwick with 1.38. Only one 2 today, Shaun again!!! Good day for Shaun. Due to the stormy conditions there were 144 balls in the water. Nobody guessed correctly and a card draw was won by Tricia Chapman. The final of the Knock Out Competition was won by John Evans who beat John Guest 4 and 3. We have our AGM on December 4th, after the match and we hope as many members as possible will attend. Next Tuesday we have a Singles Stableford Competition, anyone wishing to play, subject to handicap, contact Penny Barden at: pegohandicapsec@gmail.com
ALFAZ FANTASY FOOTBALL LEAGUE
There was an explosion of goals in the Premier League courtesy of Manchester City’s Super Six which meant plenty of points for all our Alfaz Fantasy Football League Managers. The average score was just over 32 points, the second highest of the Season. Overall the one Monday Night game and the 9 Premier League games at the weekend provided the A.F.F.L. with 34 goals(most so far this Season) only 3 clean sheets, 34 yellow cards and for the 4th time this Season no red. Southampton’s Wesley Hoedt scored his 2nd own goal of the Season to get Manchester City underway. I reckon that makes him the Saints top scorer! John’s team Wee Aggies maintained their place at the top of the A.F.F.L. with a comfortable 23 point cushion over his 2nd team Tarazara who moved up one place to 2nd. Pauline’s Vodka Army moved up 4 places to 3rd while Andrew’s Ballers slipped
down to 4th. Down at the other end of the table, Jackie’s team Winchester managed to scramble away from the bottom spot and leave Kim’s Ginger United holding the rest of the teams up. After last weeks poor showing William & Henry bounced back to take over the number one spot in our Junior League by gathering 62 points, most of them coming from his all Manchester City Defenders. A.J.s Blue Moon also had a good week jumping up 4 places to 2nd. Last weeks leaders Harley’s Ginger Ninjar have slumped down to 3rd while at the other end of the table Fleetwood Gian is settling into the bottom spot and don’t look likely to move as they are now well and truly cut adrift of the rest, the gap now 56 points behind Tom’s Real City. Pauline’s Vodka Army have marched to the Summit of our Mark Carter Ladies Section and have taken a 15 point advantage over Linda’s Team Tapas. Jin
Dream Team are in 3rd place followed by Elaine’s Barbra’s XI. Sharon’s team Rovers and Out top scored in this section with a tally of 60 points which as moved her into contention for a top 4 finish. Down in the basement, Kim’s Ginger United are struggling to keep their head above water and they now trail Winchester by 7 points. Our Across the Costas Golden Boot League is proving to be our most competitive Division this Season. Bill’s team East Fifers became the 7th team to reach the Summit in 11 weeks when they took over the leadership from Kevin’s Two for the Road who have dropped down to 4th. Kenny’s Albir Boro Army moved up to 2nd and are only 8 points away from the Leaders. Nick’s Black Cats have been making steady progress and are now in 3rd place. Two teams are sharing the bottom spot with Liz’s Cookies Crew & Joanna’s Hugonauts F.C. are both on 32 points 18
away from Walkden Town Res. Eric’s City Slickers are this week’s top scorers with a tally of 66 points thanks to his 9 Manchester City Players who had two lots of points going into the mix. The lowest scoring team was Len’s H.M.S.Victory who only managed to score a lowly 3 points in what was a high scoring week, Both teams will go into our Monthly Wine Draw. Pauline’s Vodka Army have made it to the top of our Champion of Champions League and have replaced Macca’s Albir Villains who have fallen down 5 places to 6th. Chris’s team P.G.Tip who won the Fantasy League in 1988 are in 2nd place 5 points ahead of former leaders of this Section Jin Dream Team. Dave’s team The Hatters are still anchored at the bottom and are 16 points adrift of Leo’s Power Blueboys. Manager of the Month for November is being kindly sponsored by the Brew Rock
in Albir who have live Music Daily as well as serving up an excellent A La Carte Menu. With only one week gone Eric’s team City Slickers have taken an early 4 point lead over 2 teams William& Henry and James’s 2 Girls 1 Sclupp. Trevor’s Fat Boy Blues and Sharon’s Rover and Out are both in contention for this super meal for 2 at one of the top places in Albir. Eric’s City Slickers have won this weeks breakfast for 2 at the Bar Code in Alfaz after moving up the most places this week from number 94 to 43. The 1st round of our Weekender K.O.Cup Competition takes place this weekend with the favourites Wee Aggies taking on 87th placed Kyle’s All Stars while one of the Giant Killers in the last Round Mof Town will play Dyson VC 11. If any ties finish level the replays will take place after the International Break. Best of luck to all the Managers taking part.

Mercedes target There’ll be a carnival atmosphere in Sao Paolo this Sunday which hosts the Brazilian Grand Prix, with Lewis Hamilton still in a party mood after winning his fifth world title in Mexico last month. It will be the penultimate F1 race of the season, and Mercedes say they have “unfinished business” this weekend’s Hamilton’s title victory.
by Alex Trelinski
The team are determined to win the drivers’ and constructors’ championship double for the fifth consecutive year. They will do so as long as Ferrari do not outscore them by more than 12 points at Interlagos on Sunday. Meanwhile, there’s a doubt over
whether Brazil will host a race in 2020, a fear also shared in Germany and Britain, as they contracts finish next year, coupled with the announcement this week that Vietnam will host a race for the first time in April 2020. A “multi-year” deal has been agreed to stage a race on the streets of the capital Hanoi.
Rafa Nadal withdraws
Rafael Nadal will miss the season-ending ATP Finals which start this Sunday in London. Nadal withdrew from last month’s Paris Masters with an abdominal muscle injury, and now he will go under the surgeon’s knife, meaning that Novak Djokovic will finish the year as world number one. The 32-year-old said that since he was still suffering with that injury, he would “take advantage of the moment” and have an operation on his ankle. American John Isner has taken Nadal’s place at the eight-player event at the 02 Arena.

World leader
England’s Justin Rose has reclaimed his world number one ranking at the weekend after winning the Turkish Open. Rose, 38, beat Li Haotong, of China, in a play-off after both finished on 17 under par - for his 19th career win as he returned to the top of the rankings. He initially got there in September, holding the position for a week before American Brooks Koepka replaced him. This is the first time that Rose has defended a tour title, after winning in Belek in 2017.

England’s Rugby side got a massive boost, after some poor results and performances, by squeaking out South Africa at Twickenham last weekend, and now they face the sternest test of all tomorrow. They’ll have everything thrown at them by the world champions, New Zealand(4.00 pm kick-off, live on Sky Sports), with the traditional haka to contend with before the match! With England targeting a

first win over the All Blacks in six years, centre Ben Te’o said the mood in camp had been transformed by the narrow victory over the Springboks. “Everything is better when you win,” Te’o said. “The air is fresher, the food tastes better, you sleep better. If you can just get in that winning mentality, the boys get confidence and there is a real buzz about the place.”
Half an hour ahead of the Twickenham clash, Scotland will look to restore some pride after their drubbing in Cardiff, as they entertain Fiji(live on BBC 1). Wales later on Saturday(6.20 pm-kick off, live on BBC 2) take on Australia, and on the back of last Saturday’s emphatic victory against Italy in Chicago, Ireland returns to home soil for what should be a straight-forward run out against Argentina(7.30 pmkick-off, live on Channel 4).
