Brits Great Escape collapse shocker 3

FROM FRONT PAGE TWO British men were taken to Torrevieja Hospital on Wednesday morning after the partial collapse of a building in Playa Flamenca imitated a folding pack of cards. Adjoining properties were evacuated, and residents moved to temporary homes, as inquiries started into what caused the drama, which amazingly did not cause any serious injury. The men were rescued

by emergency services after the collapse of the duplex block with four homes in it, happened at around 8.00 am on Calle Limón in the Laguna II residential area close to the Citrus commercial centre. The Brits needed treatment for bruising and shock after the incident when a front wall gave way on the 18-year-old property. Two other people escaped without any injury. One resident said that on

hearing a large noise, he told his wife that an earthquake must have struck in the area. The British man rushed out of the bedroom and said that he discovered a “huge gap” in the wall. The first people on the scene were the Orihuela local police and the Guardia Civil, who witnessed a second collapse of the structure, before pulling out a man from the bottom floor of the building, whilst being aware that the property might

totally collapse. Torrevieja firefighters then rescued a man who was trapped in the top floor duplex because the stairwell was blocked. Fire crews from Almoradi and Orihuela also took part in Wednesday’s operation, plus two dogs from Elche’s canine rescue unit to make sure that nobody was trapped in the rubble. Around a dozen buildings in the street were evacuated as a precaution, with the “all-clear”

in terms of the rescue operation coming at around 11.00 am. Orihuela mayor, Emilio Bascuñana, went to the scene along with a parade of other councillors and officials, making a pledge that temporary accommodation would be provided by the authority. Council technicians are investigating the incident, with Bascuñana telling reporters that there was damage to eight homes, and suggested that building work

done by one of the residents may have been a factor in what happened, but then added that “he did not want to jump conclusions” before an official report has been produced. Dwellers in some of the evacuated properties claimed that the buildings were not properly finished in the first place, and did not have the appropriate certification which should have been issued back in 2000.

Depopulation problem in more ways than one closes school

MOTORISTS on a busy road in Torrevieja were astonished to see a man dangling from a bridge above their vehicles on Tuesday morning. The incident happened at about 9 am on the CV-905 which joins the Carrefour at Habaneras and Las Torretas. The man was hanging under a pedestrian bridge by his fingertips before he fell to the ground, a distance of about six metres. The Local Police station

by Matthew Richards

is located next to the area and they were quickly on the scene and reported the man to obviously be on alcohol or drugs and acting very aggressively. He was eventually loaded into an ambulance and taken to the University Hospital at Torrevieja with a suspected broken ankle. His nationality has not been revealed at this stage or whether he was a local or tourist.

School has only 19 pupils which come from eight small villages, illustrating how sparsely populated the area has become. While coastal towns in the Marina Alta have thrived from the tourist boom and migratory influx since the 1970s, young people from inland towns have moved to the coast for work and other opportunities. The Vall de Gallinera, for example, has under 600 inhabitants, a drop of almost 20% in ten years, with most of those remaining being older residents.

Misplaced affection

by Simon Russell

PROBABLY best known for his important role in the movie “Aliens”, actor Al Matthews died at his home in Orihuela Costa this week. US national Mr Matthews had a long and varied career, becoming the first black US Marine in the Vietnam War to be promoted to sergeant. He then had a complete career change and became a successful soul singer, with top twenty hits in the UK including “Fool” which still receives regular airplay. He changed his path once again in the 80s to pursue a career in acting with parts in Superman III, Tomorrow Never Dies, The Fifth Element and many other movies. Undoubtedly his biggest role was the cigar-chewing Sergeant Apone in Aliens, a worldwide hit and the well-received sequel to Alien. Al Matthews was born on 21 November 1942 in

THE closure of the village school in the Vall de Gallinera has highlighted the issue of depopulation that is threatening the way of life or even existence of many inland Marina Alta municipalities. The Alpatro School had only three pupils registered this year and these students will now be bussed to the school at Beniali, six kilometres away. Parents and pupils both agree this move is for the best, with the new college having better resources and better opportunities to make new friends. However, even the Beniali

A MAN in Benidorm was the latest victim of what the police refer to as “affectionate thefts”. He was on his way back to his hotel when he was approached by a young man who offered sexual favours and began hugging the other male. However, this was a ploy to steal valuables and when the victim realised what was going on he started to protest. At this stage, the thief hit him in the head before making off with

a phone and about €200 in cash. Fortunately, the scene had been witnessed by National Police officers on patrol and they quickly arrested the suspect. The usual victims in these types of thefts are older men approached by young women, although the authorities have said everyone should be vigilant, as this case demonstrated.

Bad week for Ryanair

IRSH budget airline Ryanair was in the news again this week, as a planned cabin crew strike on Friday seems set to go ahead, whilst in the same week, Spanish police were called in to deal with an irate passenger at Malaga Airport. The low-cost airline has failed to convince cabin crew unions to call off the strike planned for Friday, September 28th in Spain, Portugal, Italy, Belgium and the Netherlands, after the Irish carrier met with the unions behind the strike on Monday but was unable to reach a deal. Unions have called the strike to protest against the company’s policy of putting all its workers on Irish labour contracts rather than adhering to local legislation. Representatives say they have “not ruled out” holding a strike every month until Ryanair accepts their demands, which received the backing of the

by Andy Mansell

European Commission last week. The unions warn that Friday’s work stoppage will be “the biggest strike ever seen by Ryanair” following earlier walkouts in July and August that forced the company to cancel hundreds of flights across Europe. Earlier this week, the company hit the headlines again, as news broke of a man having to be escorted off a recently landed flight at Malaga airport, by Spanish policemen. Bob Hamilton, 64, a 6ft 2in retired oil broker from Peterborough told The Daily Mailhe always pays extra for a seat with more legroom because of his height, but when he boarded a recent flight from London Stansted to Malaga he found someone in his seat. The cabin crew told Hamilton the man in his seat was a Ryanair

employee who had to remain there for safety reasons, and that he needed to sit elsewhere. He found a seat towards the back of the plane and ordered two cans of beer and two plastic bottles of wine, costing £17 in total, just after take-off. H a m i l t o n refused to settle his bar tab, saying he shouldn’t have to pay as he wasn’t allowed to sit in the seat he’d paid extra for, but the crew insisted and explained he should claim a refund for the £20 online. Upon landing at Malaga, two Spanish police officers escorted Hamilton off the plane.

“The police officers were very pleasant and were laughing about it,” said Hamilton, “In the end, one of the crew came out to the air bridge with a card machine and I was forced to pay up.” A Ryanair spokesperson described Hamilton’s behaviour as “disruptive”, adding, “Ryanair will not tolerate

unruly, disruptive or unlawful behaviour at any time and the safety and comfort of our customers, crew and aircraft is our number one priority. This customer was refunded the cost of his reserved seat.” Hamilton claims he was only refunded his £20 on the third attempt to get his money back.

Famous Tiki bar loses legal battle

“Wolf pack” accused again

ACCORDING to sources, a judge in Cordoba is set to charge four members of the infamous La Manada, or wolf pack, with crimes including sexual abuse. The charges relate to an attack on a 21-year-old woman in Pozoblanco, images of which have been leaked online. The four are set to stand trial for sexual abuse, crimes against privacy and abuse. The men are currently out of jail

by Matthew Richards

awaiting the result of an appeal against a seven-year jail sentence they received for the sexual attack of a young woman during the Pamplona bull-running festival. Controversially they were found not guilty of rape on the grounds that the 18-year-old didn’t struggle enough against her five attackers.

Caretaker guilty of assault

THE Supreme Court has confirmed the closure of one of the most controversial bars in Benidorm, the Tiki Beach. Located on the seafront of Benidorm’s Levante beach, the bar has been subject to the ongoing controversy between the residents of the building which also houses the Tiki Beach Bar. The residents undertook a judicial battle that has seen

by Simon Russell

the bar close and reopened. The loud noise and music together with reports of an anti-social atmosphere created by a high concentration of customers visiting the Tiki Beach, mostly foreign tourists, was what the judge gave as his reason to the owners and decreed the closure of the

establishment immediately. A little more than a year and a half ago, in April 2016, the Provincial Court gave the same reason to the owners for the closure of the bar. However, the owners appealed to the Supreme Court to avoid closure. Now, the Supreme Court has rejected the request of the owners. The ruling is firm so there is no recourse to stop the closure of it.

A caretaker on an urbanisation in Alicante has been found guilty of the sexual abuse of a 14-year-old girl. As previously reported in the “Weekender”, the 55-year-old was standing trial accused of touching the child inappropriately. The incident occurred

after he had been asked to go to the girls home to remove a spider, something she had a phobia about. After checking that she was alone he touched her through her shorts, making a comment of a lewd nature. The court heard that the girl asked him to leave and

he did, a mitigating circumstance which meant that he only received a sentence of one year. He was also fined €1,000, not allowed to be in the vicinity of the minor for five years and not allowed any contact with children in a working environment for three months.

Heartbroken girl in turtle plea Bull running fatality by Simon Russell

A small Valencian town was rocked at the weekend by the death of an elderly spectator during the annual bull running event. The tragedy happened in Jerica, a town with a population of just 1,500 located in the interior of Castellon. Mayor Marisa Domingo said that at lunchtime on Saturday during the second running, a bull returned to the bullring where the 71-year-old victim was standing, thinking the run had finished. The man was unable to get to the stands in time and was trapped by the large bull against the barrier. The barriers are constructed of iron and he received head and chest injuries which proved fatal. The mayor expressed her sorrow at the tragedy, saying that all regulations were complied with and liability insurance was in place.

A 7-year-old girl in the Alicante town of Cox has launched a campaign to find her missing tortoise. “Tortu” went missing earlier this month after wandering off from a patio where she normally lived and hasn’t been seen since. Little Noa has placed handmade posters around the town saying in Spanish “Lost turtle. If found please bring it home.” along with contact details and pictures of Tortu. The girl and her siblings are said to be heartbroken and the the family for three years, in their car, indicating by Simon Russell campaign has captured after being spotted on the that Tortu has always had the local imagination. The tortoise has been in road when they were out a touch of wanderlust.

Foot fetish predator arrested A 27-year-old man has been arrested after being connected to a number of assaults on women and girls. The suspect was detained in the inland Alicante region of Vinalopo Mitja after the mother of a 14-year-old girl had made an official complaint to the authorities. The girl said she had been stopped

by the man who held her against a wall, removed one of her shoes and masturbated while licking her foot. She struggled free and escaped, immediately telling her mother. However, since word got out a number of other women and girls

have come forward with similar stories leading back two months. Many admitted they were too embarrassed to report the incident, but police said that the man fitted the profile of a serious sexual predator and his actions could easily have escalated. He is being held without bail awaiting full charges.

Toddler dies in freak accident A tablet is being blamed for the death of a three-year-old girl in a traffic accident on Monday, when she was travelling in a car with her mother near Vilanova de Arousa in Galicia. Traffic was slowing as there had been an earlier minor accident, but the child’s mother did not notice the situation due to the glare of the early morning sun according to her statement and she ploughed into the back of a school bus. The mother and daughter were both seriously hurt and taken to the local hospital. Due to the extent of her head injuries, the little girl was transferred to the hospital at Santiago de Compostela but sadly died 20 hours later. According to the Guardia Civil officers at the scene, she was properly restrained in a child seat and the injuries had been caused by her head hitting the tablet she was watching at the time of the crash. Her mother’s condition is said to be serious but not life-threatening, while one child on the school bus sustained minor injuries.

Two men arrested for 40k euro airport theft

NATIONAL POLICE officers have called for travellers to be more vigilant after they apprehended two men suspected of stealing cash to the value of around forty thousand euros from a recently arrived Russian passenger at Alicante Airport. The theft occurred on September 8th, when the victim, a tourist from Russia was picking up her car in the airport parking lot. The two suspects, aged 38 and 39, are alleged to have targeted the woman as she loaded her vehicle. One of the men attracted her

Crumbling building FOR the second time in two weeks, fire crews from Elche have had to act to make a building safe as chunks of concrete fell to the ground. The edifice is the well known 296 Houses urbanisation in Carrus. On Monday a concrete block fell to the ground and the fire crews had to close

nearby roads while they removed about five metres of lining that also looked to be in danger of falling. Almost exactly the same thing happened two weeks before and the community has been given 15 days to ensure that the buildings are safe for occupants and passers-by.

attention to distract her, whilst the other stole her handbag, which contained 40,000 dollars, 3,500 euros, 20,000 roubles, an iPhone 8 plus and a Samsung Galaxy amongst other items. After the victim reported the robbery, National Police officers based at the airport, studied CCTV footage to look for men acting suspiciously in both the terminal and car park. They observed the two suspects, walking in a seemingly random

way, but actually employing highly coordinated movements to identify and encircle potential victims and were able to get clear images of the protagonists. Once the two men had identified their potential prey, normally recent arrivals from international flights, they followed them to the bus stop, taxi rank or airport car park, where one would distract them, whilst the other attempted to steal their bag. The officers were discreetly observing the two suspects last Saturday, when the saw them

Funeral plaques brought back to life JAVEA’S Solar Blasco museum continues with its project to renovate the Sant Joan cemetery chapel, an important heritage site. They have now completed the complex restoration of ten funeral panels. These are ceramic plaques, similar to headstones in that they have information such as the deceased’s date of birth, death, name and a dedication.

These date back to the 18th century and needed specialised restoration to bring them back to their full glory. Other recent works at the chapel have included the restoration of the old doors, replacement of window frames and the renewal of electrics. The wooden walkway to the hermitage has also been restored, giving a good observation point for the excavation works at the grave site.

follow a particular potential victim out to the car park. They made the interception and arrest, as the two men were in the process of conducting an elaborate theft. On interviewing the suspects, the agents were able to verify that between the two detainees there were more than 50 previous cases involving them on police records, most of them for theft. The men subsequently appeared before magistrates in Elche, where they were released pending bail payment and court proceedings.

Facelift Online sales help for old cinema by Matthew Richards

JAVEA’S historic Jayan cinema is getting a complete makeover to bring it into the 21st century. Originally built in 1950, the building is regarded as the last authentic movie theatre on the Marina Alta and remains a family run affair. Changes include reforming the main entrance and facade, renovating the air conditioning and electrics, construction of new toilets and putting in handicapped access for the Calle Azagador entrance. The main phase of the work is expected to be completed to allow the cinema to reopen in mid-October. Many of the works were started before the summer season then halted for July and August in order to stay open during the main holiday period. The last major changes were a few years ago when the viewing salon was updated and the capacity increased to 350.

Tackling the terraces A POLICE inspection of the terraces of 24 bars and restaurants in Alicante found that 13 had more tables than permitted and two had no licence at all for outside seating areas. The sweep was in the Old Town, an area that receives numerous complaints from locals due to excessive noise and late opening hours. The move was prompted by this, and local neighbourhood associations will feel vindicated by the police findings. Those establishments breaching the rules face fines of between 600 and 6,000 Euros.

The three, aged between 20 and 32 have been charged with burglary, illegal detention and fraud. They are due to appear before the Denia courts shortly.

Local Police in Alicante has also been instructed to clamp down on the consumption of alcohol on the streets in the area, especially youngster’s “botellon” parties. 41 people were cautioned or fined over the same weekend for infringing these laws.

HIDRAQUA, the current water concessionaire for Benidorm, has introduced their fleet of five new electric vehicles, a move that coincided with the European Week of Mobility. This is the first step to replace a total of 20 Hidraqua vehicles with electric vans over the next five years. The vans are used for general maintenance and service of the water network and this move will save an estimated 12.5 tons of CO2 per annum. The 60 horsepower vehicles can travel about 200 kilometres when charged. Their initial purchase cost is higher than diesel or petrol vans, but they are cheaper to run as well as bringing environmental benefits.

than 20% of those killed had previously reported their fears to the police, despite clear signs in most cases that they were in abusive relationships. For this reason, the authorities need to be more pro-active with the issue, she said.

Another child drowns in pool JUST a few days after a British child drowned in a swimming pool in the Canary Islands, an 18 month old has died in another pool accident, this time in Granada. The incident was called in at 9.15pm last Sunday from the Granadan town of Alomartes. The authorities said that the call was made by the people who found the body but it is not clear if this was the parents. A full investigation has been opened into the circumstances leading to the tragedy with the Guardia

Civil and local police leading the operation. Four year old Presley Stockton drowned in a pool in Tenerife earlier this month. In an interview with “The Sun” newspaper an industry expert on travel safety said he believed that Spanish pools were “among the most dangerous in Europe”. Lifeguards leaving their post or not paying sufficient attention was the main reason given.

Long wait for ITV

DUE to high demand, staff holidays and technical issues people with appointments are still having to wait for over an hour at the ITV testing station in Ondara. This is the only station for the entire Marina Alta and many are saying that the system has effectively collapsed. The situation started to get out of hand in August and it was hoped that September would see an improvement but things have hardly changed according to recent customers. Having just the single station for a population of about 170,000 has long been considered inadequate, say local road associations.

US national arrested for abduction in Madrid

IN a complex case regarding jurisdiction, an American man has been arrested in Madrid for the abduction of two children from a town in the Jaen province. The investigation started after the Guardia Civil received a complaint from a woman in the Jaen town of La Carolina. She

by Simon Russell

said she had reason to believe her children, aged 9 and 16, had been abducted by their father. She believed he took them after arranging to meet the pair without her knowledge. All European countries in the Schengen agreement

were informed amid fears that that the man could flee Europe with the children. Thankfully a major sweep led them to a Madrid hotel where the man and his children were found to be staying. The children are now with relatives while the suspect has been detained by the Guardia.

Dear Sirs, Your article ‘Streets of Shame’, revealing that some local residents in Javea are fed up with the state of the streets and public areas (issue of the Weekender Friday 14th September), revealed just part of the problem in Javea. It is not just weeds and badly maintained public lighting that is irritating and giving the town a bad name. The current administration in Javea seem obsessed with putting speed humps everywhere, often in places that are totally unnecessary, such as on the approach to traffic islands, where cars have to slow down anyway. Of course it would be better if we saw fewer weeds and better road surfaces but more important if we started to see the removal of some of these quite unnecessary and vicious speed humps. In this respect, Javea is behind the times anyway. Latest research from the UK has revealed that speed humps are discredited because they damage car suspension systems and increase pollution, both in terms of noise and vehicle emissions, as cars brake to negotiate the speed humps and then accelerate away. Come on Javea Mayor. Remove the ‘streets of shame’ tag from Javea -which is fast becoming the speed hump capital of Europe- and dump many of your over-the-top and unnecessary speed humps. Gary Morgan, Montgo, Javea

Having read your report last week of August is the hottest in our area for six years, I’ve come to the conclusion that I’m getting immune to temperatures in my elderly years. When I moved to Torrevieja from the UK 15 years ago, the old air conditioning was blasting away left, right, and centre during July and August. Last month, I didn’t even switch it on, whilst my friends at a local bar said that it was all a bit too much for them. I also work at the other end of the scale, as come the winter, I barely use any heating as my acquaintances are shivering away come January. It must be the quality of my blood, or perhaps an even greater consciousness of the everincreasing energy prices that we have to put up with here in Spain! Let’s hope the new government does something about those costs like they promised when they came office a few months ago. JOYCE BRADLEY, La Siesta, Torrevieja

The Good Care Group ‘the best of both worlds’

a career offering the best of both worlds - living in Spain but working in the UK on a rota system. The event is an informal way for potential new recruits to find out about The Good Care Group, the benefits they offer and their high standard of training as well as what it is like to work as a live-in carer. The company is not an agency and all carers are permanent full-time employees.

FOUNDED in 2009 The Good Care Group is a leading provider of live-in care services in the UK and has been rated as “outstanding” by the Care Quality Commission, the independent regulator for health and social care in England. The valuable work they do allows people to live in their homes for longer, avoiding the stress of moving to a residential home at a vulnerable time of life. They lead the way in supporting people with medical conditions such

as dementia, Parkinson’s, motor neurone disease and multiple sclerosis while providing a fully managed 24/7 care service. Due to ever-increasing demands for their services, The Good Care Group are running a Recruitment Open Event in Altea on 19th October. The event will be hosted by Jayne Nuttall Blake, the company’s recruitment specialist who is based in Javea. The group are looking for people who are as passionate about care, as they are and want

As Jayne says “We really do look after our carers as well as our clients, and we’re known for our dedicated support, training and development. I very much look forward to talking to people about how they can combine living here in Spain with working in the UK”. The venue for the event is the Albir Playa Hotel, Cami Vell d’Altea 51, Alfas del Pi, Alicante and it runs from 10.00 to 16.00 on Friday 19th October. BATTLE LINES DRAWN Sponsored By by Alex Trelinksi

Labour Party delegates at their annual conference in Liverpool voted overwhelmingly on Tuesday for a motion making a second referendum on Brexit an option. The ballot was a rejection of the British government’s so-called Chequers plan, which Downing Street has said “is the only plan on the table.” That was on the back of the plan being shredded and rejected, as Prime Minister Theresa May was humiliated at last week’s informal EU summit in Salzburg. Labour’s EU spokesman, Sir Keir Starmer(pictured on Tuesday), promised the party faithful in Liverpool that its MPs would vote against May’s proposal as it clearly failed to pass Labour’s “six tests.” Those tests include the strength of future relations with the EU and protecting workers’ rights. Starmer received a rousing standing ovation when he told delegates: “It’s right that parliament has the first say but if we need to break the impasse our options must include campaigning for a public vote and nobody is ruling out remain as an option”. Party leader Jeremy Corbin repeated Starmer’s comments over the parliamentary vote, during Wednesday’s keynote speech. He said leaving the EU without a deal would be “a national disaster”, adding: “If

parliament votes down a Tory deal Tel: 671 935 072 or the government fails to reach any deal at all, we would press for a general election.” Corbyn yesterday met the EU’s chief negotiator, Michel Barnier, to explain his party’s position at a time when European commission officials are increasingly concerned that the UK will be unable to agree a final deal, making them

FED UP WITH LOW SAVINGS RATES? Are you fed up with the low or nonexistent savings rates you have been getting on your bank accounts for the last 10 years, especially now that inflation is over 2%, which effectively means that the buying power of your money is decreasing year on year. So what can you do as there are alternatives? OK they have risks, but even by leaving your money sitting in a bank you have risks, so there is nothing wrong with taking a little risk. More and more people are turning to the stock market for salvation. In turn, many of the country’s top companies are responding positively by boosting their dividend payments to shareholders. Why

are

dividends

rising?

First, despite the economic doomsters, profits this year amassed by FTSE 100 companies are forecast to reach an all-time high of £223 billion. That is

higher than the previous peak of 2011 when booming profits from mining firms boosted the overall figures. Bigger profits usually mean higher dividends.

By Christina Brady BLACKTOWER Financial Management

Secondly, companies are under increasing pressure from shareholders to spend – or allocate – profits efficiently.

Fresh Prince of Bungee Turning 50? How are you going to celebrate? Big party for all your mates? Posh dinner? Lavish holiday? How about a bungee jump into the depths of the Grand Canyon in Arizona? Well, if you’re Will Smith, that’s exactly what you decide to do to mark the milestone birthday and also raise money for charity. The star appeared visibly nervous as he hovered over the canyon in northern Arizona before leaping backwards and plummeting towards the ground in a jump streamed live on YouTube. “This is gorgeous, beautiful,” he said as he swung upside down on the end of the bungee cord. He then blew kisses to the watching crowd, which included wife Jada Pinkett Smith and kids Jaden, Willow and Trey. Well done Fresh Prince …… personally I’d rather have a KFC!

Rose coloured Raybans

Gone today... ’Hair’ tomorrow, Mr Beckham

Pink of every shade has been the fashion colour of the year for both sexes, from cerise hair for women, to half naked rugby players supping Strawberry gin and lemonade at Benidorm’slevante beachfront bars. Now style gods Rayban, (that’sRayban, Not Raybeni), have released their own pink tinted sunglasses to brighten even the dullest Winter wardrobe. So now we can all see the world through rose coloured glasses.

Has he or hasn’t he? David Beckham’s hair has always had a life of its own whatever style he chose to sport on top of his head. He’s had them all, everything from blond bangs, to top knots, via dreadlocks and a shaved, bald bonce. But recent photos of him sporting a thick, dark bush of barnet have caused a social media storm as rumours circulate that he’s had a transplant. The 43-year-old appeared to have either dyed his hair or had a transplant treatment, when he turned up on stage in Hong Kong on Monday as a brand ambassador for an insurance firm. However, style commentators and fellow celebrities were quick to criticise the male grooming icon. Piers Morgan weighed in on ‘Good Morning Britain’ saying: “What does he look like? Dear oh dear. Honestly. I’ll never get the attraction of Beckham. Quite extraordinary.” Twitter was red hot too, “Christ, it looks like he’s done it himself from a spray-on hair can.Dropped about 10,000 places on the sexiest men list!” wrote @StressedEric72. Meanwhile @TheStellaRossa suggested simply: “Shave your head, son.” Have to admit I agree with the last commentator, as a selfconfessed baldie, back in the day when my hair was deserting the top of my head like rats off a sinking ship, he chose to shave his head for the 1998 World Cup and suddenly shaved heads were everywhere. I shaved mine and never went back, so maybe it’s time for Mr Beckham to do the same and go back to his roots.

Good news for fans of Ant and Dec as Ant McPartlin this week confirmed he has been sober for six months following a public battle with alcohol. Instagram photos appeared showing, the television presenter, best known as one half of the presenting duo Ant and Dec, who checked into a private rehab clinic earlier this year after pleading guilty to drink-driving, looking fit and healthy on a lunch date with a long time mate. The 42-year-old was praised by his friend Simon Hargreaves for his “strength and determination” in facing in problems. In a message shared by McPartlin on Ant and Dec’s official Twitter page, Hargreaves wrote: “Long overdue catch up with my buddy of 20+ years for lunch this week. 6 months sober, annoyingly healthy looking, and happier than I’ve seen him in years.

New faces on the judging panel, more bizarre facial surgery on Simon Cowell’s mush and a change in format appears to have breathed some new life into ITV’s ailing weekend juggernaut X Factor. With the auditions over and no boot camp round, this Saturday and Sunday’s shows see the hopefuls take on the brutal and gruelling six chair challenge to secure their place at judge’s houses. Husband and wife duo Robbie and Ayda Williams, plus fellow newcomer One Direction’s Louis Tomlinson have brought some much needed freshness, vibrancy and relevance to the judging panel, replacing old farts Sharon

Osbourne and Louis Walsh. I have to admit to being hooked on this season already, as the panel have put through an eclectic mix of singers including drag queens, transgenders, ex contestants and of course the usual oddball bunch of young hopefuls. Robbie has the groups, Simon has the girls, Louis the boys, but I am rooting for my new favourite judge Ayda with her motley collection of overs, which include Benidorm’s own gem, Mr Danny Tetley. The word on the street is Danny has been over in Dubai recently, so without giving too much away, maybe the house of a judge was involved. All will be revealed in due course, so watch out for my little X Factor update every week and expect tears, tantrums and expletives if things

Ant on the mend!

NEW Audi Q3 The original Audi Q3 was a big seller in the UK for Audi. It was a compact crossover with an Audi badge on it, so of course it was popular. But it wasn’t actually all that good. A bit cramped in the back, a dated interior and a horrible steering. Audi insists it has improved all that. The new Q3 for 2018 is all about giving you more apparently - more sporty, more dynamic and more mature is how Audi describes it. One thing it doesn’t say is crossover. That word is conspicuously absent whenever it talks about the Q3 - instead, this is now a compact SUV. It’s a pretty good looking car from the outside. Get up close and you’ll find it sits a lot taller than the old Q3 and feels bigger all around. The rear seats slide forward by 15cm, giving you a bit more flexibility if you want to carry big stuff in the 530-litre boot. The seats also tilt. This is possibly where this Q3 is most improved from the old model. It’s far less cramped

with more space for your elbows and far more legroom. The interior design of the old Q3 has been replaced by a lovely posh new cabin that’s essentially a scaled down version of what you’d get in a Q8 or A7 Sportback. They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. We reckon this is one of the best interiors ever committed to a car - and it’s a very successful transition into the Q3. The quality of the finish is impeccable and it has the same luxury sensation you find in the Q8. It feels light years ahead of the BMW X2 or Mercedes-Benz GLA. It comes with niceties such as Audi’s ‘virtual cockpit’, essentially replacing the analogue dials with a high-resolution screen. The full version is an optional extra, the standard is a slightly less appealing but still digital 10.25-inch screen. The MMI Navigation system standard on all models - is excellent and really easy to use, plus it’s a proper touchscreen rather than

needing a dial controller. Due to Audi’s new badging system, the 1.5 TFSI petrol engine we’re driving here is now called the 35 TFSI - available with an S-tronic, while a six-speed manual is on its way next year. There

Countdown to Paris Motorshow The countdown is on, the doors open to the public from 4-14 October 2018. So we’ve compiled a list of the expected highlights. The 2018 Mondial de l’Auto is labelled as the world’s biggest car show. It is a biennial exhibition, alternating with the Frankfurt motor show in Germany. The expo was first held in 1898 in the Jardin des Tuileries in the French capital and the last show in 2016 it attracted 1,072,697 visitors. There will be the world debut of the new BMW 3-series, a raft of French concept cars, our first look at the Mercedes-Benz EQ C electric car and the launch of the new quirky Suzuki Jimny off-roader

See our manufacturers list below for what cars we´re expecting them to showcase: AUDI - The new A1 supermini, E-Tron electric SUV and of course the new Q3 (see above) BMW - The latest 3-series, codenamed G20, 8-series, X5 and Z4 CITROEN - Citroen C5 Aircross and DS 3 Crossback FERRARI - Monza SP1 and SP2 HYUNDAI -i30 N Fastback INFINITI - Project Black S, with F1 derived powertrain KIA - Ceed GT, ProCeed and GT, Niro EV full electric crossover. LEXUS - RC sports coupe,

LC Limited Edition, ED and UX their new baby SUV. MERCEDES-BENZ A-Class Saloon, A35 AMG hot hatch, B-Class, GLE and the new electric SUV the EQC PEUGEOT - 508 SW, E-Legend concept car and a range of new Hybrids. PORSCHE - Macan with a facelift. RENAULT - Another facelift with the Kadjar and a range of concept cars SEAT - Tarraco, Spains latest crossover. SKODA - Kodiaq vRS, Karoq Scout and Vision RS concept car. SUZUKI - Jimny and Vitara facelifts TOYOTA - Camry and Corrolla Touring Sports

is also a 2.0 TFSI engine (available with 230PS in the top version) plus of course the ubiquitous 2.0 TDI that comes with 150PS, badged 35 TDI, or 190PS, called 40 TDI. Makes perfect sense? As more and more of us abandon diesel it’s

no surprise that the 35 TFSI with the S-tronic automatic is the model Audi reckons will be the most popular. That said, it doesn’t make for the most convincing drive. It is very smooth and quiet unless you rev the

nuts off it and has a decent get up and go initially. But it’s really hampered by the S-tronic gearbox which seems to sap the power and enjoyment - out of what is, we know from other Volkswagen Group cars - a great little engine.

Are you a back-seat driver? A recent study has shown seven in 10 drivers believe there is nothing more annoying than a passenger who frequently displays exaggerated emotion or offers unwanted ‘help’ or advice. Criticising the driver’s decisions, flinching when they appear to drive too close to the car in front or pointing out the correct turnoff or junction also irritate those behind the wheel. The top 20 list of annoyances also includes being involved in ‘road rage’ on the driver’s behalf, holding hands over their face and insisting on giving directions – usually when they are not needed. David Carter the spokesman for Accident Advice Helpline, which carried out the study via OnePoll.com said: “You usually find back-seat

drivers are the people who would prefer to be in control of the car, rather than sitting in as a passenger. “And if you’re someone who drives on a daily basis, it can be really hard to switch off and let someone else take control. “Unfortunately, making comments and reacting to what is happening on the road while in the passenger seat can be a big distraction for the person driving. “There is a higher risk of an accident or near-miss if the driver is having to fend off unhelpful feedback while trying to concentrate on the road.” Researchers found that partners are often the worse offenders when it comes to back-seat driving, closely followed (but not too close of course) by mum and dad. Just under half of the

drivers have been in an argument with someone in the car due to their comments, and five per cent have accidentally jumped a red light while arguing with an annoying passenger. A quarter of drivers missed a turning after being distracted, while seven per cent endured more serious consequences such as a collision. Interfering with the stereo or messing with the heating controls or air con are other driver complaints. Other back-seat driver characteristics also likely to cause a near-miss include advising on which lane the car should be in, and telling the driver when to move at the traffic lights. .Despite these issues being commonplace, only 21 per cent of motorists admitted they are back-seat drivers.

ARC - PUPPIES & KITTIES NEEDING HOMES

With one in three families owning a dog, a cat or both it is no wonder that more and more people are booking holidays that include their four-legged friends. There was a time it wasn’t possible to take pets abroad without considerable difficulty, making the prospect of them joining the family holiday out of the question. With so many of us feeling sad at leaving our furry companions behind, travel operators are fast finding ways of accommodating them. Ferry services are particularly geared-up for taking cats and dogs abroad to destinations including France and Spain and some even accept ferrets and caged pets. Many have kennel accommodation, and the costs are no more than for a person - and certainly, less than paying for kennels while you are away. You will need to establish that t h e

accommodation you are going to will accept pets - some campsites won’t accept them, and there are also country restrictions. Certain dog breeds, particularly those such as pit bull, rottweiler and Staffordshire bull terrier, may not be allowed on campsites by law. French legislation has a list of first and second category dogs where some are banned from entry, and others have to be muzzled and kept on a lead at all times while they are in public areas. All you need to be on your way together is a valid DEFRA certificate - also known as a PET passport which can be obtained from any registered vet. A PET passport or third country certificate shows that the pet has been micro-chipped and vaccinated against rabies. You need to ensure you plan ahead, as your pet may not leave or re-enter the UK until 21 calendar

days have elapsed from the date of the rabies vaccination. Rabies boosters must be kept up to date. Your pet must be inspected by vets, both in the UK before departure and abroad before your return (most vets in France are not open on Sundays and Mondays). Ensure that you are fully aware of the regulations before planning your journey. Melanoma A potentially aggressive, life-threatening cancer

Melanoma is a serious type of skin cancer. It is mainly caused by too much sun exposure so living in Spain we are more at risk. It can also be triggered by sunlamps and sun bed treatments. The risk is increased if you: • have a fair complexion • have freckles • are a blue eyed blonde • are a redhead • you have an underlying pigment disorder Men are 3 times more likely to get skin cancer than women and the risk further increases with age. Once you’ve had a skin cancer, like basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, there’s a good chance it will come back or you’ll get a new tumor within a few years, so you’ll need to get your skin checked regularly to catch it early. Melanoma can start in dark skin tissue, such as a mole or birthmark, as well as in normally pigmented skin. For men, it often shows up on the head, neck, or between the shoulders and hips. Women commonly get it on the arms and legs. It can also be found on the palms of your hand, on the soles of your foot, under a fingernail or toenail, in mucus linings (in your mouth, vagina, or anus, for example), and even in your eye. Spread

Malignant melanomas can spread outwards and downwards over the lymphatic system into the surrounding skin or lymph nodes. Later it may metastasize into organs such as the liver, lungs, brain and bones.

Diagnosis

It is important to know your own skin and be vigilant of any changes. It is recommended to perform a self skin exam every month, especially if you have any high risk factors. This is always best done with the help of a partner or friend as it is difficult to study your own back! Any changes or appearance of new moles or blemishes should be seen by a doctor without delay. A normal mole is usually an evenly colored brown, tan, or black spot on the skin. It can be either flat or raised, round or oval. Moles are generally less than 6 millimeters (about ¼ inch) some moles can be present at birth, but most appear during childhood or young adulthood. New moles that appear later in life should be checked by a doctor. Most people have moles, and almost all moles are harmless. But it’s important to recognize changes in a mole such as in its size, shape, or color that can suggest a melanoma may be developing. The ABCDE rule is another guide to the usual signs of melanoma. Be on the lookout and tell your doctor about spots that have any of the following features:

A is for Asymmetry:

One half of a mole or birthmark does not match the other. B is for Border: The edges are irregular, ragged, notched, or blurred. C is for Color: The color is not the same all over and may include different shades of brown or black, or

sometimes with patches of pink, red, white, or blue.

D is for Diameter:

The spot is larger than 6 millimeters across (about ¼ inch – the size of a pencil eraser), although melanomas can sometimes be smaller than this. E is for Evolving: The mole is changing in size, shape, or color. Other warning signs are: A sore that doesn’t heal Spread of pigment from the border of a spot into surrounding skin Redness or a new swelling beyond the border of the mole Change in sensation, such as itchiness, tenderness, or pain Change in the surface of a mole – scaliness, oozing, bleeding, or the appearance of a lump or bump If your G.P. is suspicious of melanoma you will be referred to a consultant dermatologist for further investigation. There are many different types of biopsy that may be carried out including: Incisional and excisional biopsy Shave biopsy Punch biopsy Optical biopsy If it is suspected that the cancer may have spread, further tests may be ordered: Fine needle aspiration of lymph nodes adjacent to the melanoma Surgical lymph node biopsy Sentinel lymph node biopsy Imaging tests (MRI, PET, CT)

Treatment

A treatment plan will be decided by the dermatologist after the cancer has been staged. Treatments may include: • Surgery • Cryotherapy • Radiation • Chemotherapy or photochemotherapy • Laser therapy • Biologic or immunotherapy • Targeted therapy

Summary

• Malignant melanoma is usually easy to diagnose • Malignant melanoma is usually curable if diagnosed early • Malignant melanoma grows faster than other types of cancer and can spread to other parts of the body including the bones and the brain. It is then very hard to treat and can’t be cured

Las Ramblas Golf Society

After a short rain delay of about 30 minutes, our week started with the ever popular ‘counter’ game. In today’s format, we knew how many of the four players from each team were to score before the hole was played. With 106 points (and beating my team by 19!) were Alan Douglas, his grandson Connah Judson, Joyce McClusky and the ever youthful John Shervell. Surely worthy of a mention were Connah’s six birdies! Well done mate. Speaking of ‘Counting’, much to everyone’s dis-

may, the price of a pint in the clubhouse has been increased by 35 cents! Because next week we’re playing Stableford competitions on all three days, Wednesday saw us compete in another team game. This time it was the best two scores from four on each hole but with all to count on the par 5’s. Some familiar names in the winning team; with a total of 98 points, were Alan Douglas, Harry Howard, Brian Staines and John (Curtis) Collins. Special congratulations though go to Annemarie Weisheit who scored only her second ever

birdie since she started playing at Las Ramblas! Friday was a 3-2-1 ‘Dusty Bin’ competition and cleaning up with a combined team score of 87 points (six points ahead of the runners-up) were ‘The Chuckle Brothers’ Brian Staines and Curtis Collins, together with Jan Kruse and yours truly. Finally, the next time you think the par 5’s at your course is a bit on the long side. The longest ‘hole’ in professional golf is the 7th at the Satsuki course, Japan; it’s 964 yards from tee to pin! Good luck with that.

Ruby´s Golf WE had an excellent attendance for our latest Trophy game at Alenda where the course was in very good condition. 24 players pitted their skills against the course and each other and although the scoring was not too high everyone enjoyed the challenge of the day including our worthy winner the Vice Captain. Results for the day were, nearest the pin on the par three’s was guest Simon Evans, John Clancy and Theresa Wright. Best front nine Dave Shelton and best back Theresa Wright, the highest score of the day and also best guest

was Simon Evans, Gold division winner was Martin Collins and Silver and overall winner was Vice captain George Marshall Deane. Back at Ray’z bar the presentation was well attended and some nice tapas served up by our host Angus, many thanks to Angus, and there were enough people to easily fill 2 football cards one of which was won by Mr Lucky, Keith Markham and the other by our guest Simon. Our next outing is to Vistabella which is fully booked, but if you require any information about our society email us at rubysgolf@yahoo.co.uk

El Plantio 2’s Medal Competition

The nature of a ‘Medal’ competition is such that one slip-up on one hole can lead to a catastrophic fall down the rankings. One such occurrence for one of our members on the 25th September, when he seemed to be cruising at least to be in contention for first place. At the difficult seventh hole, he twice hit the ball out of bounds, ending up with a ten. To compound his misery, he finished his round with a four and a five to finish among the also-rans. No such problems for the winner, who has the

lowest handicap in the club, and did not card more than a four to end up with a net score of one under par. Several other members carded handicap busting-scores in what was a hotly contested competition. Nearest the pins, Hole 4 – Mike Davies,

Hole 9 – Ronnie Campbell. Third Place, Handicap 7.8, Lawrence Wanty – 54.2 shots. Second Place, Handicap 10.1, Mike Davies – 52.9 shots. First Place, Handicap 3.4, John Wilby - 52.6 shots. The photograph L to R, Law-

rence Wanty, John Wilby, Mike Davies, Ron Campbell. If anyone would like to join our Society, we play at El Plantio Golf Club every Tuesday, Friday and Sunday. We use both courses - the Par 3 nine hole course and the main 18 hole course, so we cater for all abilities. The membership rates are very competitive, so call for more details. Anyone who wishes to play in the Society as a guest or join as a new member, contact Ian Henderson on 966 716 616 or 636 116 230

ARABIAN NIGHT

Two British boxers have a Friday night showdown this evening in Saudi Arabia, in the final of the super-middleweight division of the World Boxing Super Series(WBSS). George Groves and Callum Smith will be slogging it out for a seven million pound purse and the Muhammad Ali Trophy at the King Abdullah Sports

by Alex Trelinski

City’s indoor stadium in Jeddah. Groves has advanced to the final by defeating Jamie Cox and Chris Eubank Jr. The 30-year-old Londoner was the top super-middleweight seed in the inaugural WBSS tournament and is the WBA ‘super’ champion.

He saw off Cox in four rounds last October and then produced a good performance to secure a unanimous points win over Eubank Jr in February. Smith, who is two years Groves’ junior, secured his spot in the final by defeating Erik Skoglund and then Nieky Holzken – a late replacement for Jurgen Braehmer – on points.

Torrevieja vs Benidorm

This coming Sunday 30 September at 17:30h, the fifth game of the season will be disputed between CD Torrevieja and Benidorm CD at the Nelson Mandela grounds in Torrevieja. After the setback that took place at the José Díez Iborra stadium for the final match of the season, which prevented our team

from gaining the leading position, this Sunday’s match in our home ground is all about getting even! At least in sport, each weekend gives you a new opportunity to turn things around. The Club would also like to remind everyone that the period in which you can acquire your

2018/19 season ticket is still open, and all you have to do is come to the head office located at Calle Caballero de Rodas, nº56. Season tickets cannot be acquired from the stadium ticket office. We hope to see you at the Nelson Mandela on Sunday, Let’s go Torrevieja!

Midweek shocks Barcelona and Real Madrid both suffered surprising La Liga defeats on Wednesday night in their first domestic defeats of the season, but they remain in first and second place respectively, with 13 points each to their name. It was the first time that the big two of Spanish football were beaten on the same day since January 2015. Barca coach Valverde rung the changes after his team could only draw with Girona last weekend, but the champions produced a hapless performance as they conceded two goals in 68 seconds, as went down twoone to a Leganes side that had yet to win this season. Real Madrid kicked off later in the evening, and they missed their chance to go top,

Lewis Hamilton will aim to continue the domination of Mercedes in this Sunday’s F1 Russian Grand Prix at Sochi. Despite Hamilton having a 40 point advantage over nearest rival Sebastian Vettel, and Mercedes having won every race at Sochi since 2014, team boss Toto Wolff said that he takes “no comfort” from the big advan-

tage, with still 150 points on offer for the remainder of the season. “It is better to have a lead than not, but there are plenty of points to score,” Wolff told reporters. “(We’re) excited for the fight we will certainly have in the next six races. The Harlequins player has won 59 England caps since making his debut in 2012 and toured New Zealand in 2017 with the

TIGER’S RYDER CUP BID

IT’S Ryder Cup time again this weekend, as Le Golf National in Paris hosts the always entertaining biennial showdown between Europe and the USA. The Americans are the holders after the Europeans got a Stateside thrashing two years ago, and you get the sense that the USA are favourites, especially since Tiger Woods(pictured in practice in Paris) is on fire, after a remarkable comeback year that saw him take the Tour Championship event at the weekend. It was Tiger’s 80th PGA Tour win, and of course his first victory in five years, with pretty much most golf watchers taking the view that he could not come back to his very best, let alone reasonable best after his back injury.

by Simon Russell

This Friday and Saturday both have a morning and afternoon session. Fourball is played during the morning sessions, while foursomes are played in the afternoon. Sunday’s matches are straight-up match play, and of course, it’s also down to captains Jim Furyk and Thomas Bjorn to work out the pairings, permutations, and playing orders. Bjorn said this week:-“We’ll go out and do what we can and play our game. What stands on the other side, we know, is one of the strongest American teams of all time. We know we’ve got to play our best to come up against this team and that’s what’s in front of us.”

The Swede was quite right to point out that the American side is about a lot more that Tiger Woods, but Woods has a lot to still prove in regard to the Ryder Cup where he has never really shone, even in his heyday. It could be Tiger burning bright, come this Sunday afternoon for him, to cap off quite a year for him, and to leave Europe disappointed again into the bargain.
